The Life of Mr. Henry C. Cooper, Jr.

enry C. Cooper, Jr. was born on October 20, 1937, in Memphis, TN to Henry Ceaser Cooper, Sr. and Priscilla Cooper. He was the eldest of seven children.

Henry attended and graduated from Melrose High School, class of 1956. After high school, he attended Owen College for two years. He then went to work for Universal Warehouse, where he was employed as a Manager for over 40 years and retired in 1999.

He was united in matrimony to Marvie Juanita Clark Cooper for 62 years. To this union, their son was born, Gregory Cooper.

Henry had a passion for sports, especially baseball. He played for numerous teams including the White Station Tigers, and the Orange Mound Giants throughout his young adulthood.

Henry accepted Christ at an early age and continued his spiritual growth and service throughout his life. He was a member of New Philadelphia Missionary Baptist church as a young man, then later a devoted member of Robinhood Lane Baptist Church.

Henry was always an advocate for his community and the betterment of the people around him. He served as a key chair during the negotiations of the Truse – McKinney Subdivision, which later became the site of Home Depot. He continued to build, acquire, and rehab properties (typically using his own blueprints - as architecture seemed to come naturally to him) in the Orange Mound area. Henry lived in and loved the Orange Mound community for over 40 years.

He was always looking to celebrate others and bring more joy into people’s lives. He initiated the White Station Reunion to unite members of that long-standing community. He created the first Universal Bar-b-que competition/celebration, which was a repeat event.

Henry regularly visited the Orange Mound Community Center where he appreciated the valuable relationships, experiences, and fond memories.

Mourning his loss yet rejoicing in his life, he leaves to cherish his memory, his loving wife Marvie Juanita Clark-Cooper; his son, Gregory E. Cooper (Marion Dianne Harris-Cooper); six siblings: one sister, Clara Effie Tipton, five brothers: Charlie Wesley Cooper, James Edward Cooper (Nancy Cooper), Winston Cooper, Eric Cooper, and Travis Cooper; his grandchildren: Patrice Woods (Kelvin Woods) and Dorian Haugabook (K’ylon Haugabook), one great-granddaughter: Kensington Woods, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
