Affectionally known in his family as “Brother Cox/Dad”, “Mr. Cox”, “Uncle James”, “Jim”, “Uncle Jim”, and “granddad”; James Edward Cox’s earthly life came to an end at the seasoned, rich age of 103 in San Diego, California. He was born to the late James V. Cox (1877-1951) and Beulah Phillips Cox (1887-1985) in Marshall County, Holly Springs, MS. on October 18, 1917. He was the 3rd born, and the last survivor of his four siblings, all of whom joined and attended Beverly’s Chapel CME Church. Additionally, the death of Mr. Cox closes the generational legacy of his parent’s family tree and marks the passing of another World War II veteran, a diminishing population. Mr. Cox’s journey started with his loving parents on their own farm in rural Holly Springs. He moved to Memphis to live with his mother’s sister, Laura Dean. At the age of 22, he was drafted into the Army. In his military life, he served his country near the front lines in France during World War II. He was a 1949 graduate of Tennessee State University earning a B. S. degree. In 1954, he married his sweetheart, the late Wealthea Vera Rockette, in Chicago, Illinois, moving to Indianola, MS., ultimately making Canton, MS their home. He worked for the Mississippi State Forestry Extension Service until his retirement. They enjoyed 56 wonderful years of gardening and fishing. James and Wealthea were faithful members of Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church. With adoring and devoted hearts, they welcomed their precious son, Reginald, cherishing and supporting every moment and milestone with him. After Wealthea’s sudden and untimely death, Mr. Cox later joined Reginald in sunny California, where the weather seemed to make him “younger.” Our Families will be forever grateful to Reginald and Vickie Miley, who not only met his disability needs, but made sure that he was loved and happy, comfortable, averted him from getting COVID-19, and celebrated holidays and birthdays throughout the years living in San Diego. Preceding him in death are his parents, James V. (Beulah) Cox, brother-Curtis Quincy Cox, sister-Helen Catherine Cox Hiler, sister-Ruth Arneatha Cox Smith (Jimmie), sister-Beulah Cox Streeter (John), wife-Wealthea Cox. Memories to cherish forever are left to his son-Reginald, Vickie Miley, Hosea R. Robertson, the members of the Rockette families, nieces, nephews, grandsons, great-nieces/nephews, cousins, the dedicated California Caregivers, and a host of friends and family across the United States. At his request, James’ final resting place will be with his wife at West Tennessee Veterans’ CemeteryMemphis.
The Day God Called You Home God looked around his Garden And found an empty place. he then looked down upon his earth And saw your loving face. He put his arms around you And lifted you to rest. His Garden must be beautiful, He always takes the best. He knew that you were suffering, He knew you were in pain. And knew that you would Never get well on earth again. He saw your path was difficult, He closed you tired eyes, He whispered to you “Peace be Thine” and gave you wings to fly. You left us precious memories, Your love will be our guide, You live on through your family, You’re always by our side. It broke our hearts to lose you, But you did not go alone. For part of us went with you On the day God called you home.
Together Again
