Our Big Brother Larry, It is hard for us to write these words. We can’t believe that you are gone. You gave big brother a whole new meaning. Growing up we saw you live the example as a provider for your family. You were always working hard as a firefighter and in your landscaping business. You enjoyed your pastime refurbishing furniture. At one point, we believe everyone in the family owned a piece of your brown furniture. You left us with plenty of memories. There will truly never be another brother like Larry Crawford. We honor you today and every day for the rest of our lives.

arry Crawford, Sr. was born September 5, 1949 in Memphis, TN. He was the second of nine children of the late MC Crawford and Rosie B. Crawford. Larry accepted Christ at an early age at Hickory Hill Missionary Baptist Church. He entered God’s presence on Thursday, October 13, 2022.

Larry was a proud member of Capleville High School’s Class of 1967 and became an alumnus of LeMoyne-Owen College in 1979. He was well-known for playing basketball at both schools as well as in the Park Commission Basketball League. He was drafted into the United States Army during the Vietnam War and served as a military police officer receiving designation as a sharpshooter and marksman before being honorably discharged.

Larry found great joy and purpose in being a working man. He held several roles during and after college including being a manager at the downtown Walgreens for quite some time. In 1979, he began his career as a firefighter with the Shelby County Fire Department. He served the county for 27 years before retiring in 2006 as an emergency dispatcher.

Expressions

After retiring, he utilized his artistic skills, desire to serve others, and admiration of hard work by taking on landscaping and home improvement projects throughout the city and surrounding areas.

He was preceded in death by his son, Larry Crawford, Jr., his parents, his sisters, Rebecca Craft; Mildred Kirkwood; and Sylvia Woods, and his brother, MC Crawford, Jr.

Larry is lovingly missed and survived by his daughter, Lorian Crawford, granddaughter, Londyn Elise, his sisters, Rose Crawford McCraken; Betty Williams (Cecil); and Jacqueline U. Kirkwood (Stephen), his brother, Richard Calvin Crawford, Sr., two aunts, and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends. He is also mourned by his former wife and mother of his two children, Nettie Woody Crawford, and Portia Baker whom he cherished.
