Maeoma C. Johnson was born March 14, 1942, to the late Eddie Cobb and Viola Wilson

Cobb in Minter City, Mississippi. She loved going to school and some of her fondest memories were of her days at West District in Sumner, Mississippi under the tutelage of Professor Ford. She was baptized at St. Peter Missionary Baptist Church by the late Reverend V.J. Dixon and was a member there until moving to Memphis, Tennessee. Maeoma united in holy matrimony with the late Robert Johnson, Sr. (2008) in 1961 and together they had five beautiful children. Their adored firstborn, Attorney Viola E. Johnson (2015), preceded her in death. Left to tell her story and continue her legacy are four her doting children: Robert Johnson, Jr., Cynthia D. Johnson, Anthony G. Johnson (Anntoinette), and Eric Johnson; and eight precious grandchildren: Taylor, Leighton (mother, Dr. Lorna Wilks), Alanna, Addison, Annalise, Anson, Amari, and Erica. Robert and Maeoma moved their growing family to Memphis in 1964, where they eventually joined Eureka Missionary Baptist Church. For many years Maeoma served as an Usher before leading the Pastor’s Aide Committee and the Mother’s Board Circle. She loved worshipping and fellowshipping with her church members. Even though Maeoma never considered herself a singer, she became a leader of Dr. Watts and traditional Baptist church hymns. She looked forward to the Women’s Day Out eating and shopping excursions with the women in her church. Maeoma was a faithful and involved member of Eureka M.B.C. until her health declined. We are forever grateful to Bobbie George and Gertrude Washington at Eureka for the tender-loving care given to our mother over the years. After many years of being an exceptional stay-at-home wife and mother, Maeoma entered the workforce. It was only natural that she would work in the hospitality industry because Maeoma loved people, and she was a phenomenal cook and hostess. She was gregarious, funny, and a real social butterfly. Yet, she was extremely wise and discerning. Her wisdom was tempered with the creative verse of Shakespeare and the humor of Pryor. Side note: we find ourselves interjecting that insight often with phrases that usually start with, “My mother used to say…” After retirement and the passing of her husband and friend, Robert, Maeoma found enjoyment as a member of the Senior Citizens Group at Goodwill Homes Community Services: exercising, talking and socializing with her peers, going on outings, participating in the many extracurricular activities, and keeping her friend, Mrs. Ella Steele, in stitches, until she was no longer able to attend due to her declining health. We are forever grateful to Margaret P. Coleman and Lashondra M. Smith for being ever-present and constant companions to our mother and our family, even until the very end. Maeoma is also preceded in death by her dearly loved sisters and brothers: Olivia Warren, Geneva Lee, Mattie Walker, Alma Green, Catherine Kelly, Lenora Smith, twin sister Leoma Jones (May 2019), Eddie Cobb, Jr., and Jonah Lee. She also leaves to treasure her memory two fiercely devoted sisters: Ruthie Marble of Joliet, Illinois and Dorothy Brown of Calumet City, Illinois; one brother, Ernest Streeter (Yvonne) of Omaha, Nebraska; three sisters-in-law: Dora Chatman and Ruby Johnson of Memphis, Tennessee and Juanita Lee of Chicago, Illinois; three brothers-in-law: Eddie Gholson of Charleston, Mississippi, Chandler Johnson, Jr. of Memphis, Tennessee, and Monroe Jones, Sr. of Joliet, Illinois, as well as a legacy of love and devotion for her many dedicated nieces, nephews, and cousins.
