~Life’s Jouney ~

The Lord bestowed a special blessing on the small town of Rossville, Tennessee, on April 27, 1937, when the late Lee Ollie “Bud” Brown and the late Sarah Yancey were blessed with a baby girl, whom they would name Mattie Bell Yancey. She was the youngest of two girls, being preceded in death by her older sister, the late Virgie Mae Williams Bellamy. As a child, Mattie enjoyed spending time with her grandmother, Betty Warr Yancey, who introduced her to Christ at an early age. At the age of 12, she gave her life to Christ at Philadelphia Baptist Church in Rossville, Tennessee under the leadership of the late Reverend Jamison. In 1949, Mattie, moved to Memphis, Tennessee to begin a new journey in the city. After moving to Memphis, Mattie joined Grace Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Reverend Doctor Coleman Crawford where she served as an usher and later joined Corinthian Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Reverend Jerry Wigginson where she served on the usher board and maintained membership until her death. While in Memphis, Mattie discovered her passion for cosmetology by becoming a licensed cosmetologist and working at Warren Beauty Shop until her retirement in 1975. In May 1954, she married the man of her dreams, the late Corporal Leroy Hall, who preceded her in death. To this union was born three children, nineteen grandchildren (two preceded her in death), twenty-five great-grandchildren, and two great-greatgrandchildren. Mattie loved the Lord, her family, and civil justice. On August 28, 1963, Mattie made history with 200,000 other Americans who gathered in Washington, DC for the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. As a member of the NAACP, she participated in events that would lead to civil justice in Memphis. She would use these leadership qualities to be a true matriarch of her family. Mattie had a significant role in the upbringing her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. As a nurturer, she imparted the principles of Christian faith and unselfish love while they were all in her care. On February 16, 2017, the Lord stepped in and said, “Good and faithful servant, well done.” A life so filled with helping others should leave no cause for grief, but thunderous applause for a job well done. Mattie is loved by many and leaves to cherish her memory, one daughter, Sandra Hall-Dunlap (Cecil), two sons: Danny “Ray” Hall, Sr. (Leslie) and Milton Garrett, Sr., seventeen grandchildren: Sherita Banks-Flake (Derek), Abron Williams, Alicia Coppage, Sheena Hall, Cory Richmond, Jasmine Hall, Danny “Ray Ray” Hall, Jr., LaRoi Hall, Taryus Hall, Stephanie Bady, Tedra Bady, LAwayne Wright, Kai Ellison (Chico), Shamara McFarland, Kevin Garrett, Justin Garrett (LaKisha), and Shanndolyn Richardson (Terrence), twenty-five great grandchildren: Taylor Flake, Caela Flake, Makenzie Flake, April Bady, KamRon Patterson, MaKenzie Ellison, MaRaya Ellison, Denarius Hall, Danny “Trey” Hall, III, Isabella McFarland; two great-great-grandchildren, a special niece Faye Robinson-Conklin, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
