obert Lee Tyler, Jr. affectionately called “Junior” by everyone, was born on February 19, 1968, to Robert L. Tyler, Sr. and Bertha Jenkins in Clarksdale, MS. Junior was the eldest child out of five children. Born and raised in Clarksdale, he confessed his belief in Christ at an early age and was baptized by his late grandfather, Rev. W. M. Tyler, Sr. Pastor at New Mt. Olive M.B. Church. Robert Jr. was an exceptional student and excelled academically. As a result, he graduated with honors from Clarksdale High School in 1984 at age 16. Robert also enjoyed playing a good “pick-up” game of basketball. After high school, he attended Coahoma Community College on a full scholarship and obtained an Associate’s Degree. Because he was a talented singer, he joined the gospel choir while at Coahoma Community College, traveling throughout the Mississippi Delta and surrounding areas. From there, he attended Alcorn State University. Junior’s love of singing and listening to music sparked an interest in him learning to play the piano around the age of eight years old. By age 15, he began teaching himself how to play the bass guitar. Under the tutelage of Elijah “Maine” Johnson, Jr. flourished at playing bass guitar. This eventually led him to become the bass player and tenor background singer for the Jonestown Crusaders and later with the Sensational Voices of Hope. Singing in gospel choirs and with various groups throughout the Delta area led Jr to accept his call in ministry. He moved to Decatur, Georgia, around 1992 and joined Norman Grove M.B. Church under Pastor Ellison. He was ordained as a Deacon by Pastor Ellison and led the male chorus for many years. Later he joined Fairfield Baptist Church in Stone Mountain, GA, and was ordained as an Associate Pastor under Rev. Benton and served as Choir Director. On Wednesday, March 24, 2021, Jr. transitioned while at Merit Health Central Hospital in Jackson, MS. He is preceded in death by one sister (Anterior Tyler); paternal grandparents (Rev. W.M. Tyler, Sr. & Lether Tyler); maternal grandparents (Rufus, Sr. & Arlene Jenkins); uncles (Willie D. Tyler. Sr.; Rev. L.C. Tyler, Sr.; Louis D. Tyler, Sr.; Elijah Barker, Sr.; Rufus Jenkins, II; Tommie Jenkins and George Jenkins) and auntie Appolone Tyler-Brooks. Left to cherish his memories remain his children: two sons- Robert Tyler, III of Stone Mountain, GA and Cedrik Tyler of Southaven, MS; four daughters-Keeyonia (Samuel) Wilson; Kenyetta (Kendall) Anderson; Tiera Tyler from Southaven, MS and LaToya (Brent) Aldridge of Atlanta, GA; three grandchildren- Naomi, Elizabeth, and Christian; his parents Robert (Rosemary) Tyler, Sr. and Bertha Jenkins of Clarksdale, MS; one brother Keith Tyler of Dallas, TX; two sisters- Sharon (Mark) Hawkins of Ellenwood, GA and Karen Tyler of Fredericksburg, Virginia; three nieces, two nephews, one greatnephew and a host of uncles, aunties, cousins, and friends.
