Thousands Flocked To Annual Barclays Jersey Boat Show Despite The Weather Thousands of people flocked to the eighth Barclays Jersey Boat Show over the Bank Holiday Weekend (Saturday 2 – Monday 4 May 2015) and in terms of content and exhibitor participation it has been one of the best shows yet.

Despite the mixed weather, which did have an effect on visitor numbers, the event continued to attract crowds to St Helier Marina over the three days, especially on the Sunday, which is traditionally the busiest day, taking advantage of a number of activities available. These included super yachts and watercraft on the pontoons in St Helier Marina, visiting Royal Navy vessels, a packed programme of water and land based activities, a large selection of landside exhibitor stands, delicious food and refreshments as well as an extensive stage entertainment programme.

Such is the continuing popularity of the show among participants, exhibitor spaces were at capacity and organisers once again extended the arena into Weighbridge Place, to allow for a static display by the Royal Navy and Army, including an appearance by a Lynx Helicopter.

Although the large scale and nature of the show make it impossible to count exact numbers, organisers installed ‘counters’ at each of the entry points to the arena and pontoons to register attendance levels. Although Saturday’s weather is expected to have an effect on overall weekend figures compared to previous years, Sunday’s show did record the largest ever number of pontoon visitors with in excess of 5,000 in one day. At present, the estimated total number of visitors to the show over the three days is in excess of 24,000 although that figure is expected to be confirmed in the coming days.

Greve De Lecq or Greve Deserted?

A couple of weeks ago we called into the Prince Of Wales at Greve De Lecq, it was a lovely day for sitting outside yet the place was empty including behind the bar.

Despite the lack of customers it took us a while to get served, the tourists that turned up didn’t get served any quicker and were just frustrated.

Perhaps with a little common sense the bar staff will appear quicker in future as it could be a great bar - especially with the picturesque terrace.

New Addition To Sure’s Big News In Brief Tender accepted on Sewage Treatment Gig In The Park 2015 Works Introducing, Tallia Storm!

A lightening bolt of girl power has been added to the Sure’s Big Gig in the Park line up as TALLIA STORM is announced to support The Vamps and Union J this July 5th!

Tallia Storm by name and storm by nature. The 16 year old Scot was launched in to the public eye some 3 years ago… By her own determination and a dash of fortune, Tallia Storm made a name for herself with a gleaming endorsement from one of the world’s most prolific musicians at the tender age of 13.

Having found out that Elton John was staying in the same hotel as her family, young Tallia waited around the foyer, with her demo in her hand, until she finally managed to bump in to David Furnish. Thrusting her CD in to his hand, the rest was left to fate.

Tallia didn’t have to wait too long however, because within a day or two, she had a call from Sir Elton John himself, asking her if she’d open for him at a huge event! Needless to say, she agreed

Elton John described her voice as ‘one of the most impressive soul signatures he’d heard in years’ whilst Nile Rodgers was equally blown away by her distinctive style after a recent jamming session.

This phase of the project is likely to last until April 2016 and is estimated to cost just under £1 million. TTS anticipates that the programme will enable the new works to be commissioned & operational in 2020.

The first police annual report found drug addicts were put in custody cells, which are not suitable.

The report, which was broadly positive of the force, says putting them in custody cells can be a risk. People high on drugs should be a matter for health professionals and not the police. It points out that in the UK the health service has to provide specialist examiners to support the police.

The health spokesman said: "Arrest referral workers from the States of Jersey Alcohol and Drug Service are available every day, including weekends, to visit people who are in custody and are deemed to have a drug or alcohol problem."

Ultraviolet Radiation & Your Eyes Dangers of Ultraviolet Radiation to Your Eyes.

To protect your eyes from harmful solar radiation, sunglasses should block 100 percent of UV rays and also absorb most HEV rays.

Frames with a close-fitting wraparound style provide the best protection because they limit how much stray sunlight reaches your eyes from above and beyond the periphery of your sunglass lenses.

UVA rays can pass through the cornea and reach the lens and retina inside the eye.

Overexposure to UVA radiation has been linked to the development of certain types of cataracts, and research suggests UVA rays may play a role in development of macular degeneration.

Various eye problems have been associated with overexposure to UV radiation. As an example, UVB rays are thought to help cause pingueculae and pterygia. These growths on the eye's surface can become unsightly and cause corneal problems as well as distorted vision.

In high short-term doses, UVB rays also can cause photokeratitis, a painful inflammation of the cornea. "Snow blindness" is the common term for severe photokeratitis, which causes temporary vision loss usually lasting 24-48 hours.

The risk for snow blindness is greatest at high altitudes, but it can occur anywhere there is snow if you don't protect your eyes with UV-blocking sunglasses.

Because the cornea appears to absorb 100 percent of UVB rays, this type of UV radiation is unlikely to cause cataracts and macular degeneration, which instead are linked to UVA exposure.

Do you wear prescription glasses? If so, you also need to wear sunglasses while

outside; standard glasses won't shield your eyes from harmful UV and HEV radiation.

Despite this, many people go without proper sun protection because of the extra cost for prescription sunglasses or the inconvenience of having to switch glasses when they move from indoors to outdoors.

Outdoor Risk Factors: Anyone who spends time outdoors is at risk for eye problems from UV radiation.

Risks of eye damage from UV and HEV exposure change from day to day.

Kids Need UV Protection Even More Than Adults: The risk of damage to our eyes and skin from solar UV radiation is cumulative, meaning the danger continues to grow as we spend time in the sun throughout our lifetime. With this in mind, it's especially important for kids to protect their eyes from the sun. Children generally spend much more time outdoors than adults.

Also, children are more susceptible to retinal damage from UV rays because the lens inside a child's eye is clearer than an adult lens, enabling more UV to penetrate deep into the eye.

Therefore, make sure your kids' eyes are protected from the sun with good quality sunglasses. Also, encourage your child to wear a hat on sunny days to further reduce UV exposure.

Look for sunglasses that block 100 percent of UV rays and that also absorb most HEV rays. Your optician can help you choose the best sunglass lenses for your needs.

To protect as much of the delicate skin around your eyes as possible, try at least one pair of sunglasses with large lenses or a close-fitting wraparound style.

Depending on your outdoor lifestyle, you also may want to explore performance

sunglasses or sport sunglasses.

The amount of UV protection sunglasses provide is unrelated to the color and darkness of the lenses. For example, a light amber-colored lens can provide the same UV protection as a dark grey lens.

But for HEV protection, color does matter.

Most sunglass lenses that block a signifi-

cant amount of blue light will be bronze, copper or reddish-brown. Again, your optician can help you choose the best "blueblocking" lenses.

In addition to sunglasses, wearing a widebrimmed hat on sunny days can reduce your eyes' exposure to UV and HEV rays by up to 50 x.

I‘d be skate boarding Will Masterman placed 1st in the U14’s English Nationals Surf Championships held in Newquay at the beginning of May. I took some time out and caught up with the Masterman’s to hear more about a true up and coming talent in the Islands surfing community …

As I pulled up to the house I was greeted by the warmth and bustle that fills the Masterman residence, Will donning his Surf Solutions T-shirt looked every bit the young surfer I imagined to meet and one of the first things I noticed was a neat (and prominent) tan line along Will’s neck, the wetsuit line, testament to the many hours already spent at the beach this year.

We headed out to the den and settled in for a good chat about Will and his surfing…

M: What made you want to get into surfing and what is your first memory?

W: Being put on a surfboard! My Mum booked me on to one of the quicksilver camps, I was already a strong swimmer so it made sense.

We’re very much an outdoor sport family, and that was it for me, I was hooked.

M: What has kept you going back?

W: It’s so much fun; I love the feeling of surfing.

There is nothing better than nailing a trick, I move on to the next trick and keep falling and falling it gets me so annoyed, I want to prove I can do it so I keep going and going, you can’t give up. The adrenaline when you’re on a big steep wave, and you just drop down to the bottom, bottom turn and go back up it, it’s pretty cool!

M: Do you have a favourite Surfer(s)? Who’s your inspiration?

W: Mick Fanning or Gabriel Medina, Mick is such a powerful surfer with great technique and Gabriel Medina does insane airs!

M: What was it like to place 1st in the U14’s at the English National Surfing Championships in Newquay at the beginning of May? W: It was Amazing; I went from 4th to first in like 20s! When I was in the Semi’s of the U14’s I was in 3rd place for most of the heat, in the last five minutes I managed to scrape into 2nd and make the final, so I was out there during the final heat and thought I was doing ok, then I heard over the tannoy ‘’Blue Will Masterman in 4th’ I think it was the push I needed so I was sat out back knowing I needed to do something pretty special to place, I had all these thoughts in my head, so on the next wave I just went for it I did a really big round house cutback then bottom turned and did a snap. I think because mostly everyone was doing just snaps it gave me the scores I needed to place 1st.

M: You rode on a new board in the Championships; do you think this was a factor in your winning?

W: Definitely, when we arrived in Newquay the surf was knee high, I jumped in for a free surf and surfed pretty much how I would in Jersey but because the new board has the extra length and the extra volume it helped. The board (shaped and provided by Nutz) just flew. Of course I’m pretty tall, so that always makes it a bit more difficult on smaller waves, most of the guys I’m surfing against are much smaller than me which gives them a lower sense of gravity, more stability and flexibility on smaller waves.

M: You’re not that tall are you?

W: Yeah I’m 5’3 everyone is always surprised when I tell them how old I am.

M: No? Stand-up let me see, you’re taller than me! (Will’s mum laughing in the background) and I suddenly feel rather small next to this 12 year old! Ok enough with height, how many boards do you have?

W: Wow, I’ve got a rusty grom board, rescue board, my first Nutz board, a Nutz ‘pocket rocket’, the Nutz ‘livewire’ Kflex and my new Nutz livewire, which has increased by 4 inches since Dec, so 6 boards.

M: What does it mean for you and your surfing to have a sponsor like Nutz?

W: Nutz have sponsored me since Sept 2014.

It’s huge to have someone there that believes in me, that supports me. Because Ryan Hervé (Nutz) shapes all of the boards himself and is so innovative in the way he designs them, it really makes such a big difference the quality is insane! Ryan comes out to watch me surf so the boards are built to spec for the type of surfer I am, my height, weight and the level of surfer I

am. When I was surfing in Portugal everyone was asking me about my board the ‘livewire’ Kflex; it was different to anything they had seen.

Being sponsored by Nutz makes me feel part of something, it’s like winning a comp, I’ve worked really hard for it, I’ve accomplished something.

M: There must be a lot of pressure. What has been the most intense competition for you?

W: The English National Champs were huge for me and to take 1st was thrilling and completely unexpected, I feel under a lot of pressure now to prove it wasn’t a fluke, that I can keep performing at that level. I’ve just officially moved up to the U14’s though I’ve been competing in the U14’s for a bit now as well as the U12’s. I think it’s helped surfing against a higher level. I really feel I need to maintain the ability to reach every final of every competition!

For the Azores I’d travelled so far, trained for nearly half a year, so much went into it I knew if I didn’t do well I would feel really disappointed. I didn’t make it through the 1st heat but accepted that I was up against some really strong surfers, they were just ridiculously good.

I was 11, competing in the U14’s, it was a great experience! I did go through in the repêchage rounds though. Leaving the Azores feeling really pumped, I knew I had to up my game, study the competition to make sure I keep pushing forward so not to lag behind.

M: So how much training do you fit in, how many hours do you try and surf each week?

W: That’s like asking what I have for dinner every night! It varies so much, I would spend more time in the sea but my parents still make me do my homework – a lot. Whenever the swell is good I am out there, if it’s flat I am doing something that compliments my sport, Joel at Surf

Solutions posts great core training videos, I am part of the Jersey Aquatic Rescue Club (JARCS) and do the Mourant Ozannes Jersey Surf Academy Surf fitness training.

I attend training in the UK once a month with Joel Gray of Surf Solutions as I’m part of the grom squad. It’s a long way to go every month but the training is invaluable, through it I’ve come on so much. It costs a bomb to travel to the coaching and competitions, we haven’t yet found a sponsor that can help with travel costs.

M: Maybe someone in the Travel Industry out there reading this and willing to help?

W: That would be amazing! It would mean so much to be able to get to more comps and coaching sessions, some of the UK guys are so good, training with them raises the bar.

M: What’s on the cards for you in the next year/ the next 5 years?

W: I just want to keep training, pushing myself, proving I can keep performing at the same level I did in the English Champs. I want to make it on to the GB squad, that means I need to keep placing in the big UK competitions. To keep surfing, improving my technique and winning.

I really enjoyed meeting the Masterman’s, it isn’t hard to see the amount of dedication and support the whole family puts in for Will to be where he is. On my way out I caught up with Will’s brother Tom. ‘Do you like to surf? I asked him, the ten year old met the question with an enthusiastic nod.

‘Want to be as good as your brother?’ I probed, ‘BETTER’ was the response I got, I think Rachel and Mark have their hands full with two amazing, talented and motivated Kids! Hats off to you guys!

Folklore Returns!

Unless you’ve been hiding under a rock for the past six months, you’ll have no doubt heard the news that Folklore is to make a return to Jersey this month (Sunday 14th June) after a three-year break.

The inaugural event in 2012 featured live music from the likes of Ray Davies, Van Morrison and Badly Drawn Boy in People’s Park, but this year the organisers have made some tweaks to the format and formula, not to mention the setting as they look forward to hosting their first event at the stunning Val De La Mare Reservoir, just off the Five Mile Road in St Ouen. A one-day event, Folklore boasts three stages in all – the Main Stage, Islands Stage and returning Agapanthus Stage, as well as a brand new Family Zone.

The Main Stage features music from headliners James, whose indie anthems include ‘Sit Down’ and ‘She’s A Star’, 90s rockers Reef, ska and dub from Dreadzone and Gentleman’s Dub Club, and psychedelic strangeness from The Doors Alive, plus Jersey’s own Nerina Pallot, Lloyd Yates and up-and-coming (and super talented) folk musician Tadhg Daly.

The Agapanthus Stage is curated in partnership with Jersey Arts Trust serving up music, comedy, spoken word and even magic, with soul man Jake Isaac, who is signed to Sir Elton’s Rocket Man label, ‘rock n’ roll magician’ Pete Heat, and legendary comedy cabaret croonster John Shuttleworth.

The Islands Stage is a new addition to Folklore and in keeping with its spirit of inclusiveness and friendship, aims to unite the Channel Islands by showcasing the best live music from around these isles – Jersey’s Little Big Band, Guernsey’s Buffalo Huddleston and Sark’s incredible psychedelic folk oddities The Recks are amongst those lining up.

Meanwhile, in the new Family Zone, there’ll be many a wholesome activity for kids and parents to enjoy together, including dance workshops, an arts and crafts area, face

painting, cake decorating and storytelling, adding a cosy, friendly village fete element to the proceedings. There’ll also be meditation and yoga workshops for those looking to unwind, and of course the obligatory real ale bar and food village for the thirsty and hungry respectively.

The ethos of this year’s Folklore is one of celebrating not just music and art, but friendship and togetherness. There’s many a largescale, breakneck-paced, relentlessly loud and energetic festival out there, but Folklore seems to be looking for something a bit different. At an intimate 4,000 capacity, it’s a warm hug of a festival, in a beautiful setting in St Ouen’s Bay, at a time of year when the days are long and the nights are short, and will no doubt appeal to those that are looking for great music and art, but at a relaxed enough pace to unwind, chill out and soak it all up with friends. And when headliners James take to the Main Stage at the end of the night, it’ll undoubtedly be one of Jersey’s musical highlights of the year.

In September 2014 life was busy I had a lot of serious issues at work that was very stressful at the time. After dinner and at weekends I would often drink beers and wine and the odd cigar to help unwind.

Looking back it was too much.

I was not happy with my health or how I looked. I wanted to change but did not know where and how.

My wife Vickie started going to Big Bens FitClub at our local school and started nagging me to join her.

Is there a special occasion that you need to get ready for, or do you simply want to look and feel better but haven’t worked out in months or even years?

I thought it was just for the ‘ladies’ and that it was not for me. But I gave it a go, it was hard work but I would feel great after.

Guilt Free Chicken Tikka Masala

Nutritional Info Serves 4 Calories per serving 200Kcal Ingredients • 4 skinless chicken breasts, cut into chunks • 1 hand fully of curry leaves • 1 tsp smoked paprika • 2 garlic cloves, crushed • 2 red onions, chopped • 1 x 2cm piece fresh ginger, chopped

• 1 tsp cumin seeds • ½ tsp ground tumeric • 1 tsp garam masala • 1 small red chilli, chopped • 1-2 tsps vegetable stock powder • 1 x 400g can plum tomatoes, blended • 2 tbsps 3% fat natural yogurt • fresh coriander, to serve • freshly ground black pepper Cooking Instructions 1. Place the chicken chunks in a bowl with the smoked paprika and crushed garlic. Mix well and season with black pepper.

2. Preheat a non-stick frying pan and dryfry the onions and the curry leaves until soft and lightly browned. Stir in the spices and cook for 1-2 minutes, then add the chicken, and move it around the pan to coat with the other spices.

3. When the chicken changes colour, add the remaining ingredients except the yogurt and coriander, then simmer gently for 20 minutes until the chicken is cooked.

4. Before serving, stir in the yogurt and chopped coriander. Serve with basmati rice of brown rice.

My Style...

I never really know what “style” I am. I change my mind constantly. One minute I’m sophisticated and modern and the next shabby chic. I guess the right word to use would be creative!

My house style is defined by what I like at the time, it doesn’t matter if its vintage modern or Bohemian if I see it and like it I will find a place in my house for it!

Testament to this is the mismatch array of accessories and furniture I have in my living room, who would have thought that brick wallpaper, black gloss coffee table and big Bohemian coloured cushions would go together?!

But I make it work.

Much of my furniture is up-cycled giving my bedroom the coastal cottage feel – a contrast to the array of styles featured in my living room. One thing is for sure I really have been style inspired.

From a very early age I was always taught the value of having a job and working hard. I spent many a summer holiday and weekend shovelling sand and cement and carrying blocks up ladders working for my father, a carpenter/builder by trade. I wasn’t too keen on this line of work so by 16 I hurried myself into my first role working at the local pound shop and continued to work in retail for quite a number of years.

Looking back I have always enjoyed working in retail and loved the comradery with the customers. At the age of 23, I made the decision to leave home and discover the world…. only to get as far as Jersey! I arrived on this beautiful, bustling island with £250 in my back pocket, carrying two heavy holdalls, with no job and nowhere to stay. Typically, I bumped into a familiar face from my hometown of Kilkenny whilst making my way up King Street, we started chatting and as it turned out, we were both in the same predicament, with nowhere to stay. We eventually found a little guest house that went by the name of Harve de Pas Lido and there I stayed until I could secure a job. I worked for a number of companies, including JT Global, working there for nine and a half years as a Senior Retail Sales Advisor and Business Relationship Manager. I also provided, privately, IT sales and support back up for a number of select clients in senior positions.

Finally, in 2013, I was approached by the director of a reputable and established estate agency firm, and given the break I so needed and started working within a team as a Property Sales & Lettings Negotiator. A year later I was approached by another successful local estate agent, ND Estates, also as a Property Sales & Lettings Negotiator. It is through this role that I felt I really excelled and learned a great deal from the owner Nick. For me, he is still one of the best educated professionals on the island when it comes to his property knowledge and conveyancing. I certainly enjoyed my time working with the team there.

However, like everything in life we have to make decisions that further our growth, and for me, the decision to move on and start

up my own business was driven by my eagerness to be successful.

The idea of setting up my own estate agency was an easy one, although a little daunting at first. You’ll find stress in every occupation nowadays, but I’m lucky, I really enjoy what I do so it’s just about finding that balance.

I’ve always had a passion for property, coming from a family in the building trade it was something that’s always played a large part in my life. This role has allowed me to meet with some of the most interesting people and there is nothing more humbling than a client inviting you into their home and their lives to potentially change it. Equally finding the perfect home for a client is very rewarding, I’ve had the pleasure of making this happen for many of my friends over the years.

The process of buying or selling a property can be one of the most stressful and challenging times for both purchasers and sellers and so it is important that as a negotiator you remain in control of the sale process every step of the way to minimise the stress. We do find ways of making the sale happen no matter what roadblocks should stand in the way providing both parties are happy and it’s for the right reasons. Having a good solid relationship with the sellers, purchasers, solicitors, conveyancers and surveyors allows us as negotiators to have access to important information much earlier in the process, which helps prevent any last minute pitfalls. Congratulating clients on completion day gives me such an overwhelming sense of achievement. This sense of achievement is only heightened by returning clients, this is when you know you’re doing something right.

Taking in all of what I’ve said above, my goals are simple, to learn as much as there is to know about this industry, be honest and true to my clients, and of course, to be successful!

Technology In The Office “Wifi – Do you remember using a metal coat hanger as a TV aerial? Well, this is about the same, the only difference is - it doesn’t work no matter where you stand.”

We have gone through some tremendous technological advances in the last 50 years, mostly for the better of course but have all the changes been real improvements?

Some innovations were undoubtedly fantastic, for those of us who can remember, my favourite was the new office telephone on which you could store Mum’s number and dial all the digits at the press of a single button!

Then there’s the fax paper that didn’t secretly fade to nothing in three months; correction fluid that smelt great, aircon (which didn’t), the cessation of smoking at work and the mobile phone. And from the beginning we’ve had very cheap pocket calculators, then the Golfball typewriter, CD ROMs, Prozac, then the world-wide-web, memory sticks and now YouTube and LinkedIn!

I had the unfortunate experience recently of having to make a trip to the Dentist, with it being several months since my last appointment and following a bad experience with my previous dentist I was in the market for a new one. Anyone who knows me personally will know what a big deal this is for me, I am terrified of dentists and require a friend and a very, very patient Dentist. But needs must so I made some calls, checked reviews, spoke to friends and having done my research made an appointment at the dentist of my choice. The power in this scenario was almost all mine, I had complete autonomy over which dentist I chose.

My point (other than that I survived the appointment… Go me! ) is that in this real-life example I was the employer and I had my choice of many qualified and no doubt very good dentists (candidates) and that is what the employment market has been like… up until recently.

The last few years have seen some of the highest unemployment levels. Qualified and experienced candidates were out of work, companies reduced turn over, redundancies were rife, salaries remained static, bonuses, well what bonuses? Companies, the few who were recruiting had their pick of a really good bunch of flexible candidates who had to be willing to negotiate whilst bring-

ing experience to the table for fewer demands than ever before. Life was tough for the experienced, qualified and unemployed.

It wasn’t really a picnic for employers either, hundreds of resumes were sent in for every position and a tough choice often had to be made between several strong candidates.

Many recruiters I heard of hammered the phones and took three steps back in their careers reverting to a sales role, whilst desperately trying to sell candidates into nonexisting jobs, this damaged the recruitment industry and many agencies folded. We were in an employer driven market and everyone knew it.
