Hotel of the Year accolade for L’Horizon Beach Hotel & Spa Last month the team at L’Horizon Beach Hotel & Spa were in celebratory mood as they heard the great news that Awardwinning Hand Picked Hotels had chosen the St Brelade property as its Hotel of the Year in recognition of an outstanding performance in 2015. L’Horizon Beach Hotel & Spa part of the Hand Picked Hotels collection of 20 hotels across the UK and Channel Islands, won the accolade following a stellar year, during which it achieved the highest guest satisfaction scores in the collection, a substantial increase in overall employee satisfaction and excellent sales and profit growth in 2015. Julia Hands, Chairman and Chief Executive of Hand Picked Hotels,

paid tribute to the team at the hotel, led by General Manager Simon Miller. She said: “The guest feedback was excellent, with exceptionally positive comments about the team, service and the overall experience. The employee survey results were among the highest in the company. The hotel delivered very strong sales and profit targets for the year. Simon and his team have been outstanding.” Simon Miller said: “This is a truly fantastic achievement and testament to the hard work and focus put in by everyone in the team throughout 2015.” The Victorian former private country beachside house has 106 bedrooms and two restaurants, including a 2 AA rosette fine dining restaurant and a large

beachfront terrace. The hotel was also awarded silver stars by the AA this year for its superior level of quality and high standards. In Brief

Plans for 169 homes near Millennium Park rejected Plans to build 169 homes next to a supermarket in St Helier have been refused by the planning committee. The panel said they had concerns about the size of the development and the impact on neighbours. The developers wanted to build 169 flats at the site of the former Play.com warehouse, next to the Co-op Grand Marche supermarket but a number of residents spoke at the meeting to say the proposed development would ruin their quality of life.

Gorey café plans get go ahead An application to change the layout of a café near Gorey Pier, was approved. The owners applied to change the indoor and outdoor seating area, replace the windows and doors, and incorporate disabled / pushchair access, and a separate staff entrance. A Planning Department report on the application supported the changes on the grounds that they would improve the appearance of the café and are in line with the designation of Gorey Pier as a ‘Tourist Destination’ where ‘extra vibrancy is encouraged’.

Local business patrons to protect Jersey’s heritage Voisin law and Nedbank Private Wealth are the new sponsors of the Jersey Heritage Patron Scheme. The support from the two local businesses will help Jersey Heritage to conserve, educate and share collections. Fundraising represents a significant part of Jersey Heritage’s self-generated income. The Patron Scheme helps them to build and conserve their collection, create inspirational exhibitions and events and

engage people through learning opportunities.

significant exhibitions of recent years.

Money raised through the Patron Scheme so far has enabled Jersey Heritage to undertake a number of projects which otherwise would not have been possible. These include the purchase of eight Edmund Blampied sketchbooks for the Island’s Art Collection, which otherwise would have been sold outside the Island, and the development of ‘Jersey Ice Age Island’ one of their most

Jeremy Swetenham, Commercial Operations Director, Jersey Heritage, says: ‘The Jersey Heritage Patron scheme is designed for people who would like to get involved in and enjoy our Island’s heritage in an even more enhanced and innovative way. Launched in 2012 our Patrons have quickly evolved into a very active group of 50 supporters from across Jersey,

who all benefit from an exciting array of private Patron events and activities throughout the year. Being a patron gives you further opportunities to meet new people, spend time with heritage experts and get even closer to the heart of the organisation. Income from the Patron fund is ring-fenced for development of the Jersey Heritage collection, educational programmes or acquisition of new items relevant to Jersey’s heritage.’

Ferry sailings have been reduced The number of sailings between the Channel Islands and Poole have been reduced after negative feedback from customers and tour operators. Condor Ferries had planned to run double rotations - two return trips in one day - on 17 Saturdays in the summer, however, this has now been reduced to one sailing on each of the Saturdays. The decision follows the company's review of sailings, carried out with the States of Guernsey and Jersey.

Alicia Andrews, executive director, said: "This will allow us to schedule more favourable sailing times that are better suited to islanders and visitors to the Channel Islands, and help us to continue to improve the reliability and punctuality of our sailings. "With very little slack in the schedule for double rotation sailings, we were very aware that any delays roll on to the next sailing. With the removal of such a tight turnaround, we hope passenger disruption will be reduced."

She said: "Removal of the double rotations will see a slight capacity reduction, with around 10% less car and passenger capacity compared to that provided in 2015. However, there will still be capacity for growth in ferry travel compared to passenger numbers in recent years." Ms Andrews said that customers booked to travel on the 17 Saturdays were being contacted and would be offered a choice of rebooking on an alternative sailing on the same day or a full refund.

Sponsored by Rathbone Investment Management International the Academy will take place during the Easter holidays from Tuesday 29th March to Friday 1st April at Jersey College for Girls. The first Revision Academy, Prepare 2015, was aimed at all GCSE students on the island and took place over the Easter holidays in 2015 with 165 students from eight schools taking part. Due to the overwhelming response and request for A’ Levels to be added to the course, Prepare 2016 will be open to all Jersey students studying for GCSE and A’ Level examinations. Financial assistance for anyone who requires it will be available once again this year thanks to the support of JCG Foundation corporate partner, Rathbone Investment Management International. The Revision Academy for GCSE and A’ Level is designed to provide active, structured and intensive revision opportunities in key subjects. Students can select any number of subject-specific sessions to attend, according to their requirements. Each session will last for three hours and will be taught by expert teachers from a number of island schools. The most popular subjects will be repeated to allow maximum opportunity to participate and sessions will cost £20 each and financial assistance is available for students who need it thanks to the generosity of Rathbones.

Students who attended Prepare 2015 commented: “Very good, there was a lot of useful resources, the session also was very relevant and in depth” Student A, Le Rocquier “It helped me identify where I need to revise and it was fun” Student B, Victoria College “Good use of group/individual ways of learning and useful going over difficult topics, it was really good and well planned out” Student C, JCG. The value to students include: • Gives students personal revision a boost with intensive practice • Uses students’ time effectively by choosing the subjects they need most help with

Jersey-based automobile restorers to restore historic Honda motor car Le Riche Automobile Restorers (C.I.) Limited, parent of Jersey Classic Car Hire, has been chosen by Honda UK, to supply and restore a historic classic Honda motor car from the 1960s.

Arriving in the UK in 1970, the Honda S800 went up against the likes of MG Midget, Frogeye Sprite and Fiat 850, which were proving popular and fast becoming a staple on British roads.

The car in question, a 1969 Honda S800 Convertible, was first launched at the 1965 Tokyo motor show and signalled Honda’s intention to produce a car for the overseas markets that would compete with the increasingly popular mini sports car market.

Rebecca Stead, Head of PR for Honda UK commented, “We were impressed by the craftsmanship, knowledge and attention to detail displayed by Le Riche Automobile and have full confidence the car will be pristine when she arrives on our press fleet in the coming months.”

Joe Castellino, Le Riche Automobile Director commented, “It’s an honour to be undertaking this project for a global brand such as Honda. It reflects well on our business that Honda’s choice of vehicle engineering specialist is a Jersey company. In fact, despite Jersey being only a small Island, we have businesses here recognised on the global stage for their expertise, in this instance we have been engaged to restore a rare little car for the heritage collection of one of the largest motoring corporations.”

Blue Islands celebrates 10th birthday Blue Islands celebrates its 10th birthday this year, as the airline marks a decade of operating flights between the Channel Islands and to the UK from its bases in Guernsey and Jersey, since launch in February 2006. Rob Veron, Blue Islands’ Managing Director said “Since Blue Islands started flying in 2006 we have carried over 2 million passengers. In 2006, we carried 63,500 passengers per year, this year we forecast to fly a total of 380,000 passengers – that’s a staggering increase of 500%! Of course we’ve invested in a larger fleet, our routes and employees, enabling a 300% capacity increase; from 132,000 seats in 2006 to 520,000 this year.”

Commercial garage rebuild approved An application to rebuild a commercial garage in St John was agreed by the Planning Applications Committee. Seaton Garage in St John was badly damaged by fire in January 2015. Much of the property was destroyed and the business has been working at an alternative location. The site is in the green zone where no new development is allowed without considerable justification, but the Island Plan does allow the redevelopment of existing employment sites for the same use. Many local’s object to the plans. They are concerned that Ruette de la Carrière, a green lane, gets congested with cars and they don’t want to see the garage return to the site. The Planning Department report, which supported the application, took account of residents’ comments but also acknowledged that the garage is an established and lawful use of the site. The report also points out that the body shop and spray oven will not return to the site and that the owners are changing the layout of the business to avoid the need for vehicles to be parked in the road.

Jersey mental health patients are still being put in cells Young people having a mental health crisis are still being put in police cells in Jersey despite there being two new secure units at the General Hospital. Police cells have already been used 19 times this year because the units are full, and health officials say they are in constant use. Health Minister, Senator Andrew Green, said: "In the acute setting we do need more. We will evaluate it." Police cells were used almost 70 times in 2015 to detain people with mental health issues, the highest figure for five years. There were two new units built for young people at Jersey General Hospital in 2015. Mr Green said the new police

station, which is currently being built, would have specialist units for people having a mental health crisis. He said: "They are there, it is right they have the skills to handle it initially and it is right we pick it up at the right time. "It is not just the security, it is a place of safety for someone having a serious mental health crisis.

the appropriate medical care". He added: "We are working with our health colleagues to find a solution to the current situation."

Police cell (Right) New unit at Jersey General Hospital (below)

"These are the first of two, we do need more and there will be more in the new hospital in A&E. These are specifically for young people." Supt Rob Bastable from States of Jersey Police said putting people suffering from mental illness in police cells was "fundamentally wrong... not least because they do not receive

Ex-children's services boss 'still concerned' about care A former manager of Jersey's children's services still has "great concerns" about the way vulnerable children are cared for, the Care Inquiry into historical child abuse has heard. Josephine Olsson ran Children's Services as an interim manager for 12 months up until August, she was brought in temporarily to improve the department. Ms Olsson told the inquiry the service had not focussed on protecting children at the time she arrived. She also said the department lagged a long way behind the standards of the UK. The professional culture was "archaic", "hierarchical", "paternalistic", "moribund", "under-developed", with "too many internal promotions" and "systemic weakness at director level", she said. Ms Olsson said: "While I was here the number of children in care rose from 75 to 120. This signalled the fact that children

and their welfare had not been the focus of Children's Services. "Those numbers showed that the service had been reluctant to take children into care when they should have been." Ms Olsson said when she arrived she found numerous investigations under way into

cases where children had been seriously harmed, and instigated some herself. "Team managers were being advised not to take appropriately assertive action and as a consequence children were left unprotected for extended periods of time - and by that I mean years.

"I did not leave the island believing that children were safe, and I still have great concerns about their safety," she said. Ms Olsson also said the island's justice system is inherently conflicted because prosecutors were also legal advisors to States departments.

JT have been fined over JT One offer Jersey government-owned telecom firm JT, has been fined for failing to tell other operators of a new offer. The Channel Islands Competition and Regulatory Authorities (CICRA) fined JT £3,000 over its JT One deal. Under its licence JT has to tell the authority and other operators about new products in advance. JT criticised CICRA for spending a year investigating the breach rather than sorting out what it called an unclear licence condition. Daragh McDermott, from JT, said: "It is frustrating that we are being fined for breaching a clause in our licence, which CICRA itself described as having, '…insufficient clarity on the requirements imposed.' "Rather than spending almost a year investigating an alleged breach, this time could have been

spent sorting out the (still) unclear licence condition." CICRA said it was told about the JT One deal for mobile, broadband and fixed line services, the other operators were not informed. Chief executive Michael Byrne said: "Instead of seeking to remedy its behaviour and do the right thing it has required a full regulatory process to get it to stop such behaviour which is disappointing.

In addition to finding that JT has contravened its licence CICRA has directed JT to take steps to ensure it is in compliance. CICRA has taken the decision to set a low fine in this instance given this is a first contravention. Future contraventions may attract more significant remedies. The authority said JT had every opportunity to comply with regulations, but JT persisted in marketing JT One.

They will be known as ‘LV Home Care’. The company now boasts a 40+ strong team of highly trained health professionals perfectly equipped to help meet Jersey’s care needs. They offer an extensive range of services from ‘personal care’ through to ‘social companionship’. The business philosophy is to deliver a continuity of personal healthcare that allows clients to remain in the comfort of their own home. Lavender Villa Home Care was set up in 2011 and Restore Health Home Care opened in 2014. Their vision was the same – to make high quality care accessible and affordable for all. The merger has enabled them to realise this ambition whilst also ensuring the professional running and compliance of a full range of home care services.

to training ensures that they retain the highest quality carers whilst attracting new people to the industry; they hope to employ 20 more people over the next year. LV Home Care is part of the LV Care Group, which is a locally run and managed business benefiting from a full Board of Jersey born Directors.

LV Home Care has retained all staff from both businesses and is now actively recruiting to meet current market demand. Their dedication

Jersey faces substantial challenges in ensuring the availability of high quality health and social care for residents. It’s predicted

that between 2010 and 2040 the numbers of residents over 65 will rise by 95%. This demographic change is creating a huge surge in demand for health and social care services. Thanks to the merge and proposed expansion, LV Home Care is working towards meeting this demand whilst not compromising on standards of care. They are already heralded as a States of Jersey Fully Approved Home Care Provider.

Health & Fitness

SUCCESS STORY

Double trouble - sister’s getting fit! Thelma and Kathy are 130 years old between them, and have lost an incredible 5.5 stone combined! Thelma’s Story: I’m 67 years old and thoroughly enjoy getting and keeping fit and healthy with the help of Big Ben’s Fit Club. Primarily, I wanted to be fit to be able to be a fully active and useful member of the team that went to Zambia in Aug ’15, on an Overseas Aid Project, as I was one of the more mature members! I started by joining the walks on a Sunday morning with my sister, who encouraged me up and down the hills, it soon became fun and enjoyable rather than a task! Kathy and I also took up swimming on Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings, this helped ease out any tired muscles. We started slowly and gradually built up the laps each week, it wasn’t easy, but having a buddy to encourage you made it a great activity to do. I also joined an evening Keep Fit class with Ben, shyly at first as I thought I wouldn’t be able to do it as well as everyone else, but the “gang” were friendly and encouraging and eventually it was my turn to encourage the newcomers! I can’t always do the exercises but Ben shows you alternative ways of doing them to help with any injuries you have. I went to the retreat in Spain with a small group of Ben’s members – it was tough going but we all upped our standard whilst having a great

deal of fun and laughter – I’ve even booked again this year! I have lost 2.5 stone so far and toned up. I know there’s still more to do, but I know it can be fun and rewarding. Age is no deterrent, I have fun doing it and I’m so glad I joined Big Ben’s Fit Club! Cathy’s Story: When I retired from my job at 60 in 2012, I was depressed and extremely over weight at 15 stone. I needed to do something about it before it was too late. My friend put me in touch with her personal trainer who agreed to help me exercise and control my eating habits – this didn’t last long though as she decided to return to the UK! I was lucky enough to be able to continue with Ben, I was happy with the apparatus and was comfortable enough to start going to Les Ormes on my own. We discussed my weight and the type of exercises I could do at home not to endanger my back. He also suggested I join his class at St Patrick’s Hall on a Wednesday evening. I met various people who were there for the same reason – to get fitter, healthier and lose some weight! Big Ben’s Fit Club has changed my life for the better, all I needed was a push to help me see what I was doing to myself as I was heading towards becoming a diabetic or even worse.

walks.

Don’t get me wrong, it wasn’t easy,

I have changed my lifestyle so much thanks to Ben and the club. I’m much fitter by going to the gym, one to one’s (Ben), swimming, aqua aerobics, walking and eating better food (fruit, vegetables and fish) and most of all – drinking plenty of water.

sometimes it was a little tough but what an achievement – I enjoyed it so much, we’re going back this year!

Thelma (L) and Cathy (R) Why do I stay at the club? The friends I have made, motivation and support for one another, the various talks about good and bad foods and drinks, our exercises we do and the correct way of doing them and the overall benefits it has on my body. Having the support from the class, we encourage each other on everything, the Sunday walk, in the gum, pushing all the time where we can. Although I attend the Wednesday class at Samares School, we can at any time, go to other classes and anyone can join us on the Sunday

Getting fit with Ben is great, we have fun and there is also the serious side. You do not need to worry about how you look or the age you are. The aim is to have fun and get healthy together. We even went to Alicante last year for the retreat, and what fun we had!

One thing to remember – you only live once, so think about your lifestyle and, like me, if you are low and need a friend, come and join our class on a Wednesday evening for an hour. You won’t regret it, we are a friendly bunch of people who will be there to motivate and encourage you! Right now, I’m 63 years old and have lost 3 stone, and I’m very happy with myself.

BIG BEN’S WEIGHT LOSS AND FITNESS RETREAT SPAIN A typical day at the retreat: • Nutritious breakfast • Country hike • Fit Club circuits/ boxing • Indoor cycling • Healthy and balanced lunch • Team game in the pool • Cookery lessons • AB blast and cardio sessions • Dietary dinner Plus much more!

Sprouts are the new kale!

The monthly guide of things to do, eat, drink and buy We may not all love sprouts but they’re certainly full of essential health benefits. Sprouts are part of the cabbage family and have a similar nutritional profile to broccoli. Brussels sprouts provide an excellent source of folic acid, vitamins C and K, betacarotene, fibre and potassium. Brussels Sprouts do not have to be boring - try roasting them in coconut oil or sautéed in a pan with butter and pancetta for a delicious, alternative side dish.

Colour Yourself Calm Colouring books for adults have become a trend in recent months, and unlike other fads, this one actually works. Colouring allows the fear center of your brain to relax, and not just while you are colouring! Colouring is a meditative, fun activity you can schedule in at any time, allowing your amygdala to rest which reduces overall stress levels.

3

Colouring inside the lines takes focus and time, not so much that it becomes stressful, but just enough to relax your whole body and take you away from outside worries, even if it is just for an hour or so. Colouring is supposed to be fun, so don’t worry about how your book looks or what colours you choose to use - it’s your book after all!

AGE DOESN’T MATTER! For men and women over 50, one of the biggest challenges to staying healthy and exercising is family commitments and busy work schedules. You may be time-pressed, but it is important to incorporate a healthy training program into your daily routine, even if it just consists of a 10-minute walk to boost your overall physical and mental health. As you’ve probably just read, Kathy (63) and Thelma (67) are a massive inspiration to anybody who needs that extra push and proof that age really doesn’t mater when it comes to health and fitness!

• Hours slept before twelve at night are proven to be more effective than those slept after. • Sleep in the most natural setting possible, with minimal to no artificial lights. • Wakeup with the sun. • Fresh air and cooler temperatures help to improve the quality of sleep.

Brussels sprouts are in season up until spring, so there’s still time to stock up. Remember, veggies can be frozen so there’s no excuse! When freezing vegetables, first blanch them briefly in boiling water, then quickly submerge the veggies in ice water to prevent them from cooking and dry thoroughly with paper towels. Pack in air-tight containers or heavy-duty freezer bags, and force out as much air as possible before freezing.

5

Sleep!

Sleep is the most important time to recover. Adequate levels of sleep help to provide mental health, hormonal balance & muscular recovery. You need to get enough sleep, between seven to ten hours. Everyone has individual needs based on their lifestyle, workouts, and genetic makeup.

Minioti - two mums, one mission Two mums on a healthy eating mission, are launching a new range of luxury Jersey ice creams. Anna Boletta and Natasha Dowse, who have been friends for 20 years, will take the wraps off their new healthier ice cream brand - Minioti. Both Anna and Natasha are passionate about the importance of healthy eating, particularly after having their children. Like other parents, they did not want to deny their little ones treats, yet they struggled to find healthier options. So they decided to make their own! They started off with a humble ice cream maker, and a

vision - and Minioti was born. Now their specialist ice creams are being produced by Jersey Dairy, and are soon to be exported to China and launched in the UK. Minioti ice cream is made using pure milk and cream from pedigree Jersey cows. Every drop of milk used is sourced exclusively from Jersey Dairy's pedigree Jersey cows - which live a free range and natural life on the island, and whose lineage can be traced back as far as 1763. Minioti's unique fun branding also pays homage to its provenance - and features a herd of Jersey cow characters, at different coastal locations.

Jersey “Boxing” Bean Jersey “Boxing” Bean will be a regular contributor for Jersey Pages over the next few months and will be featuring articles on Nutrition, Fitness, Beauty and Well Being. Welcome!

This page is FOR WOMEN and ABOUT WOMEN! For this first edition, I wanted to share with you about some of my (and most of the female population!) insecurities. What do we fear most? What do we strive to achieve? Well the answer is EVERYTHING – because we are women!

hour?) Breast cancer is increasing amongst UK women…. All of these can be helped by a simple combination of Diet and Exercise…

For most of us we have to juggle a career, a family, trying to stay fit as well as run a home (in some shape or form) so how do we achieve this – and keep ourselves sane? One of my “role models” is Davina McCall. She is willing to share that her past was not so perfect, that she is still insecure of her husband and that she is constantly trying to achieve balance between her working and family life.

2. Set yourself a goal Lets make this realistic (!).. a holiday in the Summer (an 8 week plan is a great start!), an important event, a charitable activity (Eg. Race for Life).. ANYTHING but there is a goal……

And of course, even at the grand old age of 48 she has managed to retain her slim and toned body that she had in her twenties. To many women this seems an impossible task. But it really isn’t! I know many of you will be thinking “she has more money than me to spend on personal training” or “she has more time than me” BUT It’s not about the money; it’s about the desire, the goal. So how do we get started? Simple steps…

3. How do we start? You must combine Nutrition and Fitness together. As my lovely doctor said to me: “It’s not what you burn, it’s what goes in there!” (Pointing to his mouth). For those of us at a certain age, we need to think about how and what we eat.. I am not using the “D” word here – it is about lifestyle and how we can make it work for you.

1. Look at Facts: Stress is at its highest in the workplace for over 20 years; Obesity has risen to staggering new heights… (Are you reading this article now in your lunch

Davina McCall 4. Exercise Don’t try and do every class at the gym or try a 5k run when you have not jogged to the end of the street: Make it simple. For those who are able the first few hours of the day is a fantastic time to exercise… A walk around the lanes, Queens Valley , Les Platons, Gorey, the beach – anywhere – but after the initial effort, the feeling of well-being you have is amazing!

5. Do not over-monitor! You do NOT need to weigh yourself every week – just wait until a mid-way point to your goal. Measure yourself – these results

are much more accurate. Tell me a dress size that says you have to be 10 stone!!!

the drive, why not ask a trainer to come along and do a lunch session with a few of you. Ultimately good health is up to us whatever choice we make to receive the positive result, rests on our decision to choose physical fitness and a longer more productive life.

6. Get out at lunch-time – walk. We are so lucky in Jersey but we get so caught up in the rat race of life that we forget that we owe it to ourselves to look after number one! Why not see if there are any other colleagues that feel the same way? If you lack

Food & Drink

THE TASTE OF MARCH WHAT’S IN SEASON? RECIPES.

Perfect for Easter Sunday!

What’s in season this month? Spring Onions Spring onions are simply white onions harvested at a young age. They belong to the same family as garlic, leeks, shallots and chives.

The smallest onions are the youngest and the best. Choose onions with straight leaves and white bulbs.

They are a great source of vitamins B and C, folate and fibre. Onions are relatively high in flavonoids, an antioxidant that is thought to protect against heart disease.

Trim off the root and any dry or tired looking bits from the green tops. The bulb can be eaten raw or cooked but the tops are best when chopped and added to a dish just before serving.

Spring Green Cabbage Spring greens are young, tender cabbage plants and are sold as loose heads of thick green leaves. Spring greens do not have the hard core which is found in the middle of fully-grown cabbages. They provide a great dose of vitamin C, folic acid, and dietary fiber.

To cook: Remove the leaves from the loose head, wash thoroughly and shred finely. Spring greens can be steamed or stir-fried. To steam, place the leaves in a steamer and cook for 5 - 7 minutes or until just tender. To stir-fry, heat 1 tbsp oil in a frying pan and add the greens, stirfry for 3 - 5 minutes or until just tender.

Purple Sprouting Broccoli the start of the purple sprouting broccoli season marks a welcome addition to the winter vegetable palate. Simply steamed or boiled, it partners almost any fish or meat dish. Cruciferous foods are now hailed as having a number of important health benefits. Purple sprouting broccoli contains the phytochemical sulphoraphane and may provide resistance against heart disease, osteoporosis and diabetes. It is packed with vitamin C and is a good source of caretenoids, iron, folic

acid, calcium, fibre and vitamin A. Purple sprouting broccoli is especially good when young and tender. Look for darkly coloured specimens with crisp stalks, no bigger than 1cm in diameter, which snap cleanly when broken.

Leg of lamb, roast potatoes & leeks Serves 4 Ingredients • 1 leg of lamb • 3 garlic cloves – crushed • 2 tbsp of fresh, chopped rosemary • 1 tsp of salt • 1 tsp of ground black pepper • 1 tbsp of olive oil • Potatoes, peeled and cut in half • 2 Large sweet potatoes, peeled and cut into chunks • 2 Large leeks, chopped Method 1. Preheat the oven to 200 degrees Celsius. 2. Using your hands, rub the lamb with oil and cover with the garlic, rosemary, salt and pepper. 3. Put a roasting tin in the oven with a spoonful of oil ready for

the potatoes and place the leg of lamb straight onto the wire rack in the oven, above the roasting tin.

resting, steam the cut leeks for around 5 minutes, until they are just tender.

4. Simmer the halved potatoes for roughly 10 minutes and add them to the roasting tin with the sweet potatoes, season with salt and pepper and return to the oven.

7. Cut the lamb and serve with veggies and mint sauce!

5. Cook the lamb for approx. 1 hour 30 minutes. Of course, it will depend on the weight and how well done you like the lamb, so make sure you adjust the time accordingly. The lamb will need to be rested, covered in foil, for about 15 minutes before serving. 6. Whilst the lamb is

Jersey Wonders

Perfect ! for kids

THE TASTE OF MARCH

(Des Mèrvelles) Jersey Wonders are typically associated with Easter, most Easter events wouldn’t be the same without them!

Chocolate nests When I was a child, I always looked forward to making these at Easter. I never measured any ingredients though, it’s a kind of “throw it all in and see how much you have” type of recipe. You will need a bar of chocolate (or two!) and half a box of Shredded Wheat. Cornflakes or Rice Crispies will work just as well if you prefer. You will also need cupcake cases and a bag of mini eggs. Melting the chocolate Put a small pan of water on the hob and keep it simmering. You will need a Pyrex bowl slightly larger than the pan so the bottom of the bowl does not directly touch the heat. Put the chopped chocolate in the bowl, stirring constantly until all

of your chocolate has melted. Preparing the nests Crush the cereals up into tiny pieces and add to the melted chocolate and stir, making sure all of the cereal is covered. The fun part! Using a large spoon, dollop the mixture into the cupcake cases. Using your fingers, make a dent in the middle of each nest. Once the nests have cooled down they should keep their shape. Fill each one with a couple of mini eggs and voilà! Happy Easter ☺ Tip: If you do burn the chocolate, add a couple of drops of olive oil and stir rapidly until the mixture returns to the desired consistency.

Sunday Lunch Menu £14.95 per person Food service from 12 - 3pm

Traditionally, Wonders are cooked as the tide goes out. If Wonders are cooked when the tide is coming in, the fat that the Wonders are cooked in overflows the pan. Or so the old wives tale (and my Nan!) says. Makes about 40 Ingredients 1 ½ lb self-raising flour 8 oz caster sugar 4 oz butter 6 eggs 4 blocks of lard (depending how deep your pan is)

Using a large, deep pan, drop 4 – 6 Wonders into the hot lard, cooking for 2 minutes on each side, until golden brown.

DIYgirl Upcycled coff table... I’ve been looking for a white, wooden coffee table for a while, but they’re either shiny (I’m not a fan of high gloss) or just plain boring, so I decided to paint my own. I found this cheap coffee table at Hospice, £8 to be exact, which I thought was just perfect for my new project. With a big smile on my face, I rushed home to get started! What I used: • Coffee table (Obviously) • Paint – There probably is a “correct” paint to use, but I’m always far too excited to worry about minor details like that! I used Acrylic paint from Pound World, white, blue and green :) • Paintbrush and bowl • Sandpaper • Large sheet (to cover the surface) • Polyurethane spray To start I put the sheet down to cover the floor and placed the coffee table on top. I gave it a quick wipe over with a dry cloth to remove any dirt and dust. Using the sandpaper, I rubbed over the whole table, quite hard, to get a nice even surface and remove some of the shine. Now the fun part! Like I previously mentioned, I get far too excited to worry about doing anything “correctly” and always hope for the best! I poured a generous amount of white paint into a glass bowl and began slapping the paint on the table. By slapping, I mean I literally covered the table in paint not worrying too much about the parts I had missed or the amount of paint that ended up in my hair and on my face! Once the table had a good coat, I left it dry for a couple of hours. You probably should

leave it a little longer but like I’m sure you’ve guessed – I’m quite impatient. Round two When I went back to my table, the paint had dripped and dried kind of patchy so with my sandpaper, I went over the whole table one more time. This time quite lightly, just to even the paint out! I went over the table again with the white paint, this time being a little more cautious and aware of the edges. Using long strokes, I painted from edge to edge to leave a clean, straight finish. This time I left it over night to dry.

Splash of colour Whilst I think my table looks great as it is, I have been partial to a splash of turquoise here and there, so why stop now? I mixed the blue, green and white to achieve a turquoise shade and painted the under shelf in long even strokes to ensure a straight finish and left it to dry. To finish I sprayed the whole table with Polyurethane spray and left it to dry for an hour. Voilà - a brand new piece of furniture!

This mon I also made... ...Turquoise side tables to match my new coffee table!

Magazine Coasters I found these coasters on Pinterest a while ago and had to try them! They’re very easy to make, and basically free!

What I used: 8 magazine pages (you could use 6 for a smaller coaster) Scissors

I started by folding the individual pages in half, 3 times, to get a long thin piece of paper and then folded it in half the other way.

5 Next Mon When I was watching “The Great Interior Design Challenge” a couple of weeks ago, one of the contestant’s upcycled an old stool with leather belts. This is definitely something I’m going to try so I will let you all know how I get on in next month’s issue!

3

I interlocked two pieces to make the bottom corner of my coaster. Then, I added another strip, wrapping it around the outside this time. I kept adding one piece at a time, pulling the pieces of paper tightly together. By the time I had finished weaving my pieces, I had 4 horizontal and 4 vertical strips.

To finish off the coaster, I wrapped the end pieces around and tucked them in to the previous fold, cutting off any edges that stuck out.

I cut a square of self adhesive covering film and covered one side of my coaster to protect it from all the spilled tea!

If you don’t have any covering film, don’t worry, the coasters should only take 10 minutes, so you can always make more!

IS STORAGE THE SOLUTION? By Stephen Cohu We all have a tendency to keep things that may prove useful in the future, but will that ever be the case?! People keep the most bizarre things even after they have stopped working, watches being a good example, plugs cut off the cable. People keep things they have not used in years. When they come to downsizing, they pack up all this stuff and instead of moving it to their new property, or better still, disposing of it, they put it into storage. Out of sight, out of mind, out of pocket!

Obviously, when you are “between properties” and you do intend to re-use your treasured possessions then storage is a legitimate option. Even under these circumstances, a careful eye should be kept on whether it makes sense to keep things in storage. NEVER, NEVER, NEVER! Never tip the contents of drawers and cupboards into boxes for storage without sorting them first. Get rid of clothes you haven’t worn for years or that are too small, tatty or generally past their sell by date!

I have cleared hundreds of “just in case” cupboards, half burned candles, out of date food, alarm clocks that don’t wind, bags of wrapping paper, pens that don’t work and I have cleared storage units with boxes full of this type of stuff in them.

Never store old three piece suites unless they are designer items or of high value as the cost of storage will almost certainly outweigh the cost of replacement. The same goes for lightly soiled mattresses or other bedding. I have cleared storage units where you would want to wear full protective clothing before touching the contents!

I’m sure you’ve all seen Storage Wars where the contents of a lockup store are purchased where the owners can’t be traced and they haven’t paid the rent. Nine times out of ten, the outstanding storage bill will far outweigh the value of the contents, ranging from bags of dirty laundry to TVs that don’t work.

If you have a shed full of garden tools and equipment, garden chairs, loungers, rusty barbecues and you are not intending to move to a property with a garden then leave the contents where they are. Storing them is not sensible.

START EARLY If you are considering moving or downsizing then don’t leave having a clear out to the last minute. Start early, empty out the contents of the just in case cupboard and throw it away! If you have furniture that you will never use again or will not fit into a new property then get rid of it. Sell it if you can, give it to charity or as a last resort, chuck it away. Many people don’t leave themselves enough time when they sell a property to clear it effectively and efficiently which results in a fair chunk of stuff finding its way into storage from where it is unlikely to ever emerge! The problem with storage is that people only store stuff they don’t need and although the monthly cost goes out unnoticed, after a few years to charges will have been considerable and will far outweigh the monetary value of the items stored.

Never store food or other perishable items. I recently cleared an abandoned storage unit containing amongst other things, a Terry’s Chocolate orange with a best before date of the late 1980’s. The entire kitchen had been boxed up and put into store with absolutely no thought or planning. STORAGE CAN BE USEFUL If you are planning on leaving the island for a period of time, then storage is a useful solution but be selective. Don’t store just because it is the easy way out, making hard choices could save you fortunes in the long run. Always be careful what you store, for example, check rugs and carpets for moth or furniture for woodworm. When you finally get round to opening your unit in five years’ time you may be disappointed to find your property is mouldy, mothy and only fit for the dump.

Also, under certain circumstances, when an elderly relative moves into residential care, certain of their possessions may have been specifically bequeathed to family members and until they pass away these specific items may need to be retained. However, it may be simpler just to give the items away during their lifetime. GUILTY AS CHARGED Unfortunately I have the same inability to say good bye to potentially useful things as everyone else. I currently have four working sheds, full of boxes of cleaning materials, metal polish, tools, broken furniture, general junk from house clearances that has never been sorted and this costs me a small fortune every year. If I was ruthless I could get rid of at least two of my sheds but the desire to store is an incurable disease! On New Year’s Day 1999 a large tree fell on my warehouse in St Lawrence and demolished it. I moved to a new store in St John and in this shed are some items I moved there from my store in St Lawrence 17 years ago! If you have to use a storage solution then only store things you

will want again, that are clean and of reasonable value. Keep an eye on the costs as is it easy to spend a lot of money without really noticing. This article has been brought to you as a public service announcement. If anybody knows of a large cheap

shed where I can consolidate all my “stock” to one location then I would be pleased to hear from you. Then I will be able to store even more! I am being serious, I do need more space, preferably around 3000 square feet of clean dry storage with large vehicle access at all times.

Business & Finance

Black-Listed? Two key online sources define blacklists as i) a list of people or groups regarded as unacceptable or untrustworthy and often marked down for punishment or exclusion and ii) a list of persons under suspicion, disfavour, censure etc.

By Vernon Breese

According to the Henry Holt Encyclopedia the word blacklist originated with Charles II of England who made a list of fiftyeight judges and court officers who sentenced his father (Charles I) to death in 1649. When Charles II was restored to the throne in 1660 (which news undoubtedly gave cause for concern amongst judges and court officers), thirteen of these regicides were put to death and twenty-five sentenced to life imprisonment. Of course this was the original ‘blacklisting’ and the consequences of being blacklisted were ‘significant’ and since then there have been many synonyms suggested for the verb ‘blacklist’: • boycott • outlaw • shut out • exclude • blackball

• bar or debar • ban • shun • ostracise Still sounds rather serious I think? You could certainly understand why people or groups wouldn’t want to appear on such a list. Regardless of whether you are an individual, a country, a jurisdiction or a whole island community, appearing on a blacklist can be really damaging. Our own fair island has had its share of being blacklisted and has always worked hard to properly justify being removed from such blacklists. (Up until only two years ago our close neighbours and friends across the water in

France had blacklisted Jersey along with Bermuda for being non-cooperative in disclosing information) Jersey has been very successful in rectifying and adjusting and it may well be that the efforts of those who have worked so hard for change can be credited with protecting the island’s reputation…one could also argue that the publishing of blacklists has had a useful effect? Most jurisdictions have found themselves on a blacklist at one time or another and each in the main has striven to get themselves off such lists. To do so requires a number of actions such as a change in approach or behaviours or an upgrading of policies or perhaps

even a simple explanation to correct misunderstandings or omissions. But what if you are blacklisted in error? What if your ‘ostracisation’ is unfounded? Well, the truth is a blacklisting can be most harmful particularly in the world of finance and business – a blacklist acts like a sanction or prohibition. Look at the reality of some of the selection processes like choosing a building contractor or choosing a financial services domicile: a busy employee somewhere is asked to research the possible options and a quick trawl of various websites and online information sources happen to reveal a blacklisting. The employee quite naturally casts those options out straight away – why would they risk presenting questionable options to their line manager? Remember the words in the definition: untrustworthy, suspicious etc.

“Well, the truth is a blacklisting can be most harmful particularly in the world of finance and business – a blacklist acts like a sanction or prohibition.”

This is one of the reasons blacklisting is so damaging. Another is, as many claim, the negative reputational impact. Well they are right, of course it damages reputation.

In Brief New Regulatory Summit for the financial services industry Jersey International Business School are delighted to launch their 2016 Regulatory Summit, to be held on Tues 15 March at the Hotel de France. With leading speakers from the world of financial services regulation this event will help delegates to understand some of the myriad regulations facing the financial services industry. This one-day summit will examine the key challenges faced by industry and discuss the future and nature of regulation in Jersey and globally. The Regulatory Summit costs £425 per delegate, with discounts available for JCOA, ICA and STEP members and is worth 7 hours of CPD.

The next time that busy employee is ever asked to consider such questions, they may well remember to avoid the builder or the domicile previously blacklisted. Why would they bother to check if things have changed recently – there are plenty of other options that are ‘undoubted’ (or at least not blacklisted)…why waste time shortlisting less than favourable candidates or risk producing poor options?

There are other reasons why blacklisting causes so much trouble and here are just a few: The Unexpected You were never warned or your authorities or government were never alerted to the issues and suddenly you appear on a blacklist. This is really tough because now you will appear to be reacting as though you had deliberately chosen not to react earlier!

If you were indeed warned and there are in fact issues to address, then you take the pain and get it right but otherwise – caught unfairly in a place you never wanted to occupy in the first instance, the sense of powerlessness and the inequitable can be overwhelming not to mention frustrating. On whose Authority? Who decided you or your group should be prohibited, excluded, shunned or otherwise blackballed? Was it a careless decision? Was there an unknown unrecognised motive for your being blacklisted? One has to question these matters when (for example) only one EU country blacklists your group while others with higher standards rate you as perfectly acceptable. After the Remedy Sometimes you or your group have been alerted to certain relevant and important issues

and you have sought proactively to resolve these matters with the engagement of the authority threatening to blacklist you. The changes you proffer are accepted and then swiftly actioned but the blacklist was “already at the printers” so to say. Well that’s pretty rotten? You would be surprised at the number and the variety of blacklistings drawn up today and a quick trawl online will yield a plethora. Maybe though, you shouldn’t be surprised: given a few moments of quiet, you might agree or admit to yourself that you have blacklists of your own? Restaurants you no longer frequent, hairdressers you won’t use and people you avoid? These people or groups might have disappointed you many years ago but despite massive change and improvement - they remain on your blacklist… Interesting isn’t it?

“You would be surprised at the number and the variety of black-listings drawn up today.”

Channel Islands Property Fund acquire office buildings at Liberty Wharf Two landmark buildings, Liberation House and Windward House, are to be acquired by the Channel Islands Property Fund. The specialist Channel Islands’ real estate investment company – which already owns offices in Seaton Place and on the Esplanade in Jersey, as well as Regency Court, Glategny Court and Carey House in Guernsey – is to acquire both properties together with 51 parking spaces. Liberation House, which measures more than 61,000 sq.ft. over six storeys, is let to a number of tenants. BDO is the sole tenant of Windward House measures 23,500 sq.ft. Jon Ravenscroft, Group Chief Executive of Ravenscroft, which acts as investment manager to the fund said: "These two properties are a great addition to the portfolio and, following their successful acquisition, the value of the assets in the fund will be evenly split between the two islands."

IN THE CHAIR WITH... ...GORDON JENKINS Lumiere Wealth, an independent wealth management and advisory firm based at Castle Quay was launched in April 2015 by Managing Director Chris Byrne. Having already grown its team to 12 and following the recent acquisition of additional office space at its existing premises, the team is set to grow further in 2016. Gordon Jenkins has recently joined the team as an independent wealth manager and brings with him 30 years of financial services experience.

Where did you begin your career? I started work in financial services in 1986 for a home service company called Britannic Assurance. Home service companies had been operating for well over 100 years and there were many door to door insurance agents working for household names including Prudential, Liverpool Victoria, The Co-Op, Refuge and Britannic. It was a popular way to save for the future, take out life insurance, save a pension and protect a family, their home and car. It would involve going from door to door collecting premiums in cash, marking a premium receipt book and really getting to know your clients’ requirements and aspirations.

That sounds really old fashioned. Did it work? It was extremely successful. It gave people a reason, and the discipline, to save and for the agents, it was a great way to meet people. It was, and still is, a people business, but sadly with modern technology and working practises of larger companies, things have become quite impersonal. It might seem old-fashioned but I want to keep these client relationship

attributes at the forefront of my business dealings and always encourage open dialogue and communication.

What changed? With the advent of direct debits and standing orders, the increasing complexity of compliance, the evolution of the financial services market and costs of running this business model, home service went into decline and in 2001. Britannic made all their 2,500 home service agents redundant.

What did you do next? By September 2001, Britannic had pulled out of the Channel Islands and so a group of exemployees decided it would be appropriate and timely to set up Orbital Financial Advisers Ltd to provide continuity for hundreds of Britannic clients. We stepped in where Britannic left off but as independent advisers, we could talk about all providers and a whole range of products.

How was this received? Better than we could have expected. Clients knew we were experienced advisers and so were happy for us to look after all their savings and investments plans. We had always prided ourselves at Britannic with very high service levels and we continued this service-oriented ethos at Orbital. Clients were comforted to know that even through the two major downturns of 2001 and 20082009, we were there for them, helping them to get through the crises.

What led you to Lumiere Wealth? After running Orbital Financial Advisers for more than 14 years, and seeing incredible changes in all aspects of the industry, especially those of regulatory

Gordon Jenkins, Independent Wealth Manager requirements that are becoming more time consuming, the three directors decided we would like to focus more on client relationships and ultimately close Orbital. I had given a lot of thought as to where I would like to continue providing quality financial advice to my loyal clients so, when Lumiere Wealth approached me to be part of their highly experienced, professional, and friendly team, I was delighted to accept. For the time being, I am also going to remain a director of Orbital Financial Advisers Limited until all clients are comfortable with the new arrangements. The response from Orbital’s clients has so far been fantastic and all of them have

“It might seem old-fashioned but I want to keep these client relationship attributes at the forefront of my business dealings”

asked me to continue looking after their financial affairs in my new role.

Why did you feel that Lumiere Wealth was the right choice for you? Having worked with Chris Byrne during his time at Orbital Financial Advisers, I got to know him very well. He is someone who can be relied upon, is impeccable in his work ethic and business dealings, is hard working and focused and has very high standards. I knew that he would take these attributes and use these at Lumiere Wealth to lead from the top and set the bar at the highest level. Having accompanied Chris on appointments, he is incredibly client focused with a totally serviceoriented mind set, which really impressed me, as I have always adopted the same approach. This client focus is apparent across the

whole team at Lumiere Wealth. I am inspired and enthusiastic about my new venture at Lumiere Wealth and am confident that it will be a very successful career move. Lumiere Wealth offers independent and individually tailored financial solutions in order to preserve, enhance and protect its clients’ wealth for the future. Lumiere Wealth’s team of experienced, independent wealth managers offer a range of quality solutions, whether you want to invest, plan for retirement or protect your family or business. For further information, please contact a member of our friendly team today on 01534 625001 or at info@lumierewealth.com Lumiere Wealth Ltd is based at Millais House, Castle Quay, La Rue De L’Etau, St Helier, Jersey JE2 3EG and is regulated by the Jersey Financial Services Commission.

The Busy Queen Bee RAPPORT Using the word R-A-P-P-O-R-T, I have created my own acronym to define what you need to do when you want to run a successful business. R - RELATIONSHIP Everything in life is a relationship. This begins with our relationship with ourselves. To live a peaceful, conscious life, we must begin within ourselves. Being content, fulfilled, feeling good about ourselves, our life has a major impact on our business and how we deal with people and relationships everyday. The average business loses around twenty percent of its customers annually simply by failing to attend to customer relationships. Powerful relationships don't just happen from one-time meetings at networking events, relationship marketing involves building deep networks strongly rooted in a bond or connection that is developed over time with other people. Amongst the most important connections are those with your referral sources, with prospects these referral sources bring you

and with customers you recruit from the prospects. A - AUTHENTICITY Authenticity means the truthfulness of origins, attributes, commitments, sincerity, devotion, and intentions. Authenticity like a state of being, is to know yourself, being honest with yourself (and others), feeling comfortable in your own skin, and showing parts of yourself that are appropriate to the situation. When we align with our values on a daily basis, we have more energy and feel more fulfilled because we are leading from what's important to us. When we don't align with our values, we feel less authentic and become demotivated about our daily lives, which reflects in our leadership. P - PROFIT Being passionate about what you do, doesn't always mean you are making money out of it. Ultimately we are all in business to make some money, otherwise we would just be doing voluntary work and living on fresh air and love. But the reality is that we have bills to pay, families to feed, employees

who are depending on us to make a profit so they can earn some money. So getting the figures right is so important for the success or failure of your business. Every product you buy, every store you visit, every media message you receive, every choice you make in our consumer society has been shaped by the forces of marketing. The marketing process is central to the business performance because it addresses the most important aspects of the competitive marketplace. Profit maximisation through customer relationship marketing is invaluable to understand, measure and implement. P - PASSION I know it is not easy everyday, but work is about more than the thing you’re doing. It offers nourishment in a number of different ways. So, when you think about finding work you’ll enjoy, work that, hopefully, can be truly nourishing, think about the entire experience. Being proud of what you do and who you work for will enhance your performance. You will be more engaged with your external and internal customers, you will tend to work more quickly and efficiently, and you will be more driven to try and promote your organisation and to develop your products and services to offer something with real

“Powerful relationships don't just happen from one-time meetings at networking events, relationship marketing involves building deep networks strongly rooted in a bond or connection”

value for the end user. O - ORGANISED Being organised and maintaining an organised office, shop, desk, business will help you in innumerable ways, such as: * Increasing effectiveness, efficiency and productivity * Enhancing discipline, creativity and success * Attracting abundance * Improving mental clarity and focus * Reducing stress and helping you to feel more relaxed and peaceful * Giving space for new projects and creative endeavours to flourish R - RADIANT People will do business with you if you are sending out the right energy. That first impression you are giving of yourself needs to be one of radiance and warmth. You want to be a radiator... THE RADIATORS Have a positive attitude; they inspire us, encourage us, support us and help us to overcome obstacles. They are those we want to be around, those we feel good with. Why is that? One of the reasons is because they know how to listen. We feel good about ourselves and about the world when we’re in the company of radiators. Who are the radiators in your world? You’ll recognise them instantly because each time you spend time in their company you come away feeling great about yourself and the world. The drains Are those people who seem to have the ability to drag us down;

and suck the life out of us, the “mood suckers.” We all know people in each group! Those who literally drain us of our energy. Toxic people are often negative about everything. We feel worse about the world and the people within it after spending time in their company. These are the people who don’t listen, who talk and talk and talk without drawing breath. Through their eyes the world is a bad place filled with bad people who are out to get you…so ‘best get them before they get you’ is their motto. Being radiant is about feeling good about yourself. It is about being proud of who you work for. If you are sensational, you will take people with you, because positive behaviour breeds positive behaviour. So not only will you be sensational but others around you will be sensational too. T - TRUST People buy people. Whatever you do, people will buy your product or service and do business with you because they like you, trust you and know you are going to do what is right for them. When trust emerges, magic happens. Trust is about having the right people around you, yes, but trust is also within you. Self trust can be summed up as the assured reliance on your own character, ability, strength, and authenticity. Use R-A-P-P-O-R-T every day and see how you can become a Thriving business #ThrivewiththeHive. Words by Claire Boscq-Scott

C5 Alliance acquires Altius to expand services C5 Alliance Limited (C5) has acquired Altius Consulting (CI) Limited (Altius), a Jersey based company providing business intelligence and data solutions. As a wholly owned subsidiary of C5, Altius will continue trading under the Altius brand. As specialists in providing business insights with particular focus on business intelligence (BI), management intelligence and data, Altius will join forces with C5 Professional Services and Managed Services teams to expand on their existing services. Altius will continue to work in partnership with their UK group, which will enable C5 to export

specialist skills in financial technology solutions into the UK market. It will also mean that for large Channel Island based projects that require extra support that there will be an extensive pool of resources from the UK to draw upon. John Gamble of Altius Consulting (CI) Limited said: “The synergies between C5 and Altius are fantastic and will enable us to provide our existing clients with new services and skills. At the same time, our extensive UK network will value the unique financial technology solutions that an organisation like C5 can offer.”

Members pay a monthly fee, which in return offers many benefits that are exclusive to Talanton: • Evening networking socials each month to meet and engage with new members and find out what’s hot in Talanton and the latest developments in our members’ fields. • Small Business 101 talks once a month which offer value-added support from industry experts on a wide range of topical business subjects such as social media management, GST and other topics to help individuals run their own business. • Hot desk facilities available in a modern, central Jersey location that offer high-end facilities and a seven star concierge service. • Regular morning networking coffee pop ups in a central location for members not able to make our evening events, or even to those keen to connect with fellow members more often. • Access to interim, special project roles through a confidential online portal, where applications of interest are registered direct with the Client. Talanton spotted a niche in Jersey, to support freelancers, entrepreneurs and solopreneurs in being successful. It recognised the desire that many small business owners have to connect with other like-minded, similarly motivated business people. Equally it recognised that for many businesses, finding suitable candidates to fill interim roles and special projects was often a challenge when sourcing through traditional avenues of recruitment. “We recognise that the future of work is about choice, lifestyle, and purpose and we refer opportunities

to others who value this”, explains Trudi Roscouet, Business Development Manager. “From a business seeking the support of specialists, Talanton recognises that for many they are unable to afford the cost of hiring full time staff, yet have a range of things they need doing, either as one-off pieces of work or for a few hours, which require specialist skills. Talanton provides a noticeboard to make it easy to find, hire and pay for services from small businesses, freelancers and solopreneurs. In many cases people find they can get things done faster and at a fraction of the cost. The Client is happy because they have access to a network of skilled individuals who are looking for interim roles and our Members are happy because they enjoy access to roles they might not have heard of through the usual means.” Talanton’s membership is growing and they have already seen a number of relationships forming that are beginning to deliver tangible results. Clients pay no fee to advertise their roles and opportunities to Talanton unless the cost exceeds £5,000 although the commission is charged at just two percent, so it offers a really cost-effective alternative to the usual route to resourcing. Talanton would encourage businesses of any size to consider its services to source their interim roles. Equally small business owners and freelancers are welcome to join the team at their next event and find out more about the benefits membership can offer.
