The Shelter Trust has again joined forces with the Friends of Ecce Homo Trust (Outreach to Romania) to hold its annual Tinathon in St Helier later this month. This year will mark the sixth anniversary of the Tinathon, which is sponsored by State Street, and Islanders are being asked to donate a tin of food, which will be collected and packed in West’s Centre on Friday 16th May 2014 before being distributed to those less fortunate in both Jersey and Romania. Last year over 9,000 tins of food were collected and letters and posters have been sent to local businesses, schools and religious and community organisations asking them to support this event by encouraging their employees, pupils
and members to take part, either by visiting on the day or by organising inhouse collections in the coming weeks. Organiser Michelle Cuthbert said that a tin of food was a simple and practical way for most people to show their support for the two charities benefitting from the Tinathon and she hoped as many different companies, groups and individuals as possible would get involved. “Every year the generosity of Jersey people has exceeded our expectations and we extremely grateful for their continuing support and for the support of our sponsors and our dedicated team of volunteers”, she said. “We will be in West’s Centre throughout the day on Friday 16th May and anyone can bring along tins and drop them off.
We will also be operating an office collection scheme in the days running up to the event for those businesses who have arranged their own Tinathon and are asking any firms who want to take advantage of this scheme to let us know in advance so we can make the necessary arrangements,” added Mrs Cuthbert. She explained that, ideally, they were looking for a varied selection of tinned food, especially meat, fish, vegetables and fruit, but welcomed any canned goods as long as they were in good condition and within the ‘use by’ date. Anyone who wants more information can either e-mail tinathonjersey@hotmail.co.uk or call Michelle Cuthbert on 07797 760578.
Your Guide to voting A website encouraging Islanders to register and vote in the 2014 States of Jersey elections has been launched by the Privileges and Procedures Committee. Vote.je is an essential guide to voting in Jersey and contains everything that Islanders need to know about registering to vote and voting in the elections on Wednesday 15th October 2014. Committee Chairman, Deputy Jeremy Maçon, said the website was the first port of call for anyone who wanted to find out more about this year’s elections. He said: “Vote.je is an engaging and informative tool for Islanders who want to know more about the 2014 elections.
We want to make sure that everyone knows how to get on the electoral register and how to cast their vote on election day. “The website is also the place to go if you are considering standing for election as it provides candidates with all the information they will need. From September the website will also have information about the candidates who are standing for election, including their contact details and manifestos.” Deputy Maçon said he hoped that Islanders would follow @Voteje on Facebook and Twitter to keep up-to-date with information about the forthcoming elections.

Young squash stars selected for coaching with Chris Simpson On Tuesday 20th May, seventeen budding squash stars from Victoria College and Jersey College for Girls will take part in a special coaching session with internationally acclaimed squash player, and Channel Islander, Chris Simpson. Chris is currently ranked at number 20 in the world, having risen an amazing nine places since last year. Born and educated in Guernsey, Chris represented England as a junior and is now based in Harrogate having turned professional in 2005. This once in a lifetime coaching experience has been organised for the local youngsters by Rathbones, one of the main sponsors of the PSA Jersey Squash Classic, now in its second year, taking place from Tuesday 20th through until Sunday 25th May.
In addition to being an associate sponsor of the PSA Jersey Squash Classic, Rathbones has funded Chris Simpson’s attendance at the tournament. Chris will be sporting a kit bearing the Rathbones logo for the duration of the tournament and it is hoped that he makes it through to the finals despite the competitive line up. Discussing the sponsorship Jonathan Giles, managing director of Rathbone Investment Management International said “We are delighted to once again offer Jersey youngsters the opportunity to not only watch world class squash but also get involved and gain a real insight into professional sport and the attitude and dedication required to exceed – an approach which can be applied in many areas of life.”

St Aubin’s Bank employees help transform home for The Good Companions Club poor has opened A long-term home for poor people in Jersey has been officially opened. The Christian charity, Love Thy Neighbour, has set up the almshouse in St Aubin. Five men have moved into the house and the charity plans to open a three-bed home for couples and families in June. Colin Taylor, from the charity, said retired servicemen, fishermen and the poor were being helped by the scheme. He added that he hoped almshouses would open in all parishes. The new house has five bedrooms, a lounge, kitchen and two bathrooms. Mr Taylor said residents paid money towards maintenance “depending on what they can afford”.
The Eastern Good Companions Club has enjoyed a mini-makeover with the help of employees from RBS International. Equipped with paint pots and paint brushes, a 20-strong team of Bank volunteers transformed the entrance foyer and lounge, while outside there those with green fingers tidied up and added new plants to the flower beds. Jerry Whitsey, Chair of the Corporate Sustainability Board, RBS International, described it as an excellent project which involved a lot of hard work for the employees from the Bank’s Products and Marketing team: “As part of our commitment to community banking, RBS International offers all employees the opportunity to take up to one or two day’s paid leave each year to spend volunteering. Smaller charities like the Good Compan-
ions Club are often overlooked, so the team were delighted to be able to help improve the surroundings for all those who attend.” Angie Falle, Eastern Good Companions Club Manager, added:
“The current hall and lounge have not been decorated for some time, both were tired and dated. Our members use the club here as their home away from home and are delighted that their “home” has got a face lift – it’s a
great start to spring 2014. We would like to thank the team from RBS International for choosing The Good Companions Club for a community project, one that will be enjoyed by many happy club users.”
Jersey barred from cattle exports over disease testing Channel Island farmers are unable to send cows to the UK until they meet EU regulations on disease control. Jersey States vets are working to prove that the herd has been disease-free for many years. Changes to the live cattle import rules between Jersey and the UK in October 2013 meant exports were banned until the island complied with EU disease testing rules.

Meeting the testing requirements will cost Jersey £542,617 over five years. It will be at least six months before the testing procedure can be put in place and exports allowed to resume. Between 50 and 100 heifers in calf are sent from the island each year. Jersey's Director of Rural Economy, Daniel Houseago, said in a report that the impact of not carrying out the tests would cost the dairy industry about £4.8m over the next five years.

Scallop permits now online The new process is now in place for both recreational and commercial scallop divers and is one of a number ways in which government departments are improving their online engagement with Islanders. The IT infrastructure set up for scallop permits can now also be used for similar department projects. Assistant Director of Marine Resources Mike Smith said: “The new online system lets divers obtain a 2014 permit at the push of a few buttons and then they can add to their diving experience by taking home a feed of scallops for their barbecue.” The Marine Resources section of the Department of the Environment had asked
people on their database for their views on changing the system. 97 per cent indicated they would like to apply for a permit online. “When we asked people for their views the response was overwhelmingly in favour of introducing an online option. For members of the public, it reduces the time and trouble it takes to apply. For the Marine Resources section, it saves time that we can spend more usefully on patrol, doing monitoring work,” said Mr Smith. In 2013 225 people applied for a licence to dive for scallops. Applicants had to complete a form and post it to the department. Then each application had to be manually processed and the permits made and posted to the applicant. An additional change is that applicants no longer have to

The Atlantic Hotel shortlisted for The Cateys Independent Hotel of the Year Award 2014 The Atlantic Hotel has been shortlisted for the Independent Hotel of the Year 2014 award at the Caterer and Hotelkeeper’s annual Catey Awards. Widely regarded as the hospitality industry’s answer to the Oscars, the Cateys recognise the industry’s “highest flyers, strongest performers and hottest brands” and the awards ceremony is attended by the country’s leading hoteliers and restaurateurs. More than 140 judges, selected for their expertise and industry knowledge, determine a shortlist for the Catey Awards after a rigorous initial selection process. Finalists must be able to demonstrate sound financial results, innovative marketing campaigns, exceptional standards of service and a clear strategy for future investment and growth. The Atlantic Hotel is one of three hotels in the country shortlisted as finalists for the Cateys Independent Hotel of the Year Award. The hotel
is up against Congham Hall Hotel, Norfolk and the Great Northern Hotel, London. Previous winners have included The Pig in Hampshire, The Isle of Eriska, Argyll and Lucknam Park, Bath. On learning about being selected for the shortlist, The Atlantic Hotel’s owner Patrick Burke commented, “It is a great honour and privilege to reach this final stage and to see our hotel listed amongst the very best establishments in the country. This achievement is testament to our efforts to maintain the
very highest levels of service throughout every area of the hotel, the investment made in our new interactive website and our ongoing marketing campaigns that have attracted the attention of national media and generated significant business to the island of Jersey from France, Switzerland and Germany”. The ultimate winners remain a closely guarded secret until they are announced at a glittering event on Tuesday 1 July at London’s Grosvenor House, A JW Marriott Hotel.

Construction industry skills shortage Jersey's construction industry will face a skills shortage by next year, says the Jersey Construction Council. Marc Burton, a JeCC board member, said the construction workforce had shrunk 10% since 2010. A new hospital and fire station, new offices and new housing are all causes for optimism, he said. "We've suffered a really heavy recession in construction. Our peak workforce was 5,500 and that's fallen 500. If you look at the capital expenditure budget over the next three to five years, we are anticipating a skill shortage next year." Social Security Minister Francis Le Gresley said there is £200m of States construction planned over the next two years and that would create building jobs. Participants in the back-to-work scheme will be taught site safety skills, work on a community project unpaid, then do a one-week placement with a company, which it is claimed could lead to employment. James Joseph, managing director of construction company AC Mauger, has employed backto-work participants and said his company finds it "very difficult" to find qualified staff.

Undersea cable laying starts on new link to France The laying of the cable is underway as part of the installation of Normandie 3, the third undersea cable linking the Channel Islands to France. The new cable will run from Periers in France to Long Beach in Jersey. Its 100MW capacity will be utilised by both Jersey Electricity and Guernsey Electricity. The cable forms part of the Channel Islands Electricity Grid along with Normandie 2, an existing 100MW cable between Jersey and France and GJ1, a 60MW cable between Guernsey and Jersey. After 10 years of preparations, including obtaining French planning permissions, the work has now begun on the physical installation of Normandie 3. The main contractor Prysmian Powerlink is undertaking the work on the seabed between France and Jersey and also the landside in Jersey. The work , which is currently taking place off Armanville Plage in France, involves pull-
ing a plough through the seabed to create a furrow into which the 2,500-tonne is laid at the rate of approximately 50 metres an hour. The project is expected to be complete before the end of the year when
commissioning tests will begin. The link should be fully commissioned and able to add power to the grid in both islands by 2015. Chris Ambler, Jersey Electricity chief executive officer, said: “Not only will
these links guarantee Jersey a long-term low carbon future, when large-scale renewables such as offshore wind or tidal become viable, they could facilitate the exportation of power from Jersey.”

Electric Vehicles At nine miles by five and with speed restrictions of 40mph, Jersey is the perfect environment for electric vehicles (EVs) and they are the perfect way to help protect that environment. Since 2011, the number of makes and models of EVs available in Jersey has steadily increased for both private and business users and Jersey Electricity has been at the forefront of promoting and facilitating their use. Our own EV ‘stable’ includes the Mercedes Smart, Peugeot iOn, Nissan Leaf and Renault Kangoo ZE. We view EVs as the next big step to further reducing Jersey’s overall carbon emissions, we are working with the States to install a public charging infrastructure to enable motorists to park and charge around the Island.
Types of EVs EVs offer an environmentally friendly alternative to traditional fossil fuel motoring whatever your needs. Incorporated into a company fleet for business use, EVs will also enhance a company’s green credentials. Battery Electric Vehicle Battery electric vehicles are powered purely by electricity. Unlike conventional car batteries, which start the engine and run items such as the radio or heater, the battery pack in an all-electric vehicle runs everything. Crucially, it runs the controller which, in turn, powers the electric motor that replaces a petrol or diesel engine. EV battery packs need to be powerful and long-lasting to provide an adequate range between re-charging. Regenerative braking ‘tops up’ the battery as you drive by capturing kinetic energy when the brakes are applied. This can increase range by up to 20%. An average family saloon, with a range of around
100 miles, would typically have a 24kWh battery pack and be charged via a standard 13Amp domestic socket overnight on off-peak electricity. A full charge can be achieved in as little as 30 minutes through a higher power fast charger. Hybrid Electric Vehicle The hybrid electric vehicle is dual fuel. It is powered by a combination of electric motor and standard internal combustion engine, providing increased fuel efficiency particularly in stopstart city driving. The electric motor boosts the car’s ability to start and accelerate, and powers the car at low speeds over short distances when the internal combustion engine is least efficient. The engine kicks in at higher speeds. The system also prevents wasting fuel idling by automatically shutting down the engine when the car stops. The battery is recharged by both the engine and regenerative braking which captures kinetic energy when the brakes are applied. Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle The plug-in hybrid electric vehicle, like the hybrid electric vehicle, is dual fuel, powered by both the electric motor and internal combustion engine to increase fuel efficiency. The battery pack can also be charged by the engine and regenerative braking. The difference is the battery pack is larger, increasing the share of electricity used as fuel to power the car and it can also be plugged into the electric grid for charging at home overnight.
ExtendedRange Electric Vehicle An extendedrange electric vehicle uses an internal combustion engine to power an electric generator that charges the battery system. Unlike the dualfuel system hybrid and plug-in hybrids, the electric motor is the only system to directly power the car and turn the wheels. The internal combustion engine only charges the battery system. Charging your EV Though most Electric Vehicles can be charged on a standard 13Amp home socket, we recommend having a weather proof external charging point fitted on a dedicated circuit. This is simple to do and chargers come in a variety of styles to suit homes and businesses, small and large. You can have one fitted free of charge as a member of Jersey Electricity’s EV owners’ Evolve Club. Membership can also offer access to public charging points that we are currently installing in five multi-storey Town car parks, beginning with Sand Street, and our own car park at The Powerhouse. These charge points are fitted with dual sockets for both 16Amp and faster 32Amp charging. The chargers automatically recognise how much charge your vehicle can take. How far can I travel on one charge? EVs such as the Nissan Leaf, Peugeot iOn, Renault’s ZOE and Mercedes Smart ed, now appearing in Jersey, typically provide a range of around 90 - 125 miles. However, range will be affected by driving style, speed, heating temperature and air-conditioning use, all of which can deplete the battery more quickly. Understanding the factors will enable you to optimise
range and all EVs are equipped with technology to help you do this. Regenerative braking ‘tops up’ the battery when the brakes are applied. This is similar to the KERS (Kinetic Energy Recovery System) in Formula One and can increase vehicle range by as much as 20%. How much electricity do EVs use and what does it cost? Jersey Electricity recommends that all EV owners switch to our Economy 7 Tariff. This provides seven hours of discounted electricity during the offpeak nigh time period, usually between midnight and 7am, so charging your EV overnight makes electric driving very economical. How long will a battery last? Nissan expects the Leaf to have 70 to 80% capacity left after ten years. But how you recharge the pack will affect its life. Frequent and regular fast charging, which enables an 80% charge in 30 minutes, will reduce its overall capacity to 70% over 10 years. Battery packs with short, medium or long range, priced accordingly, may become the norm. Renault have already decided to lease the battery packs on this basis, dramatically reducing the price of the cars which no longer includes the battery cost. Other manufacturers are likely to follow suit. Find out more about EV’s at www. jec.co.uk/your-home/electric-vehicles/

MAKE AN EDUCATED INVESTMENT In the past decade, overseas investment in the UK has been steadily rising and an asset group that has been particularly popular is property. British real estate has always been regarded as a stable investment type which has led to heavy spending in this sector over the last few years. A property type which has predominantly caught buyers’ eye is student buy-to-let. Due to a considerable uplift in the number of students in the UK there is now a drastic shortage of suitable accommodation and subsequently there has been a significant increase in demand. This has been recognised globally by investment professionals, resulting in student property emerging as the UK’s strongest asset class. Within this category, purpose-built accommodation developments are thought to provide the highest returns. Vita Student is a provider of private accommodation in the UK and its products represent the very finest student residences on the market. It offers bespoke studio apartments which have been specifically designed for students, alongside a large communal ‘hub’ which includes relaxation, study and social areas.

The IWF promotes the safe and responsible use of technology and is part of the UK Safer Internet Centre, working with Childnet International and the South West Grid for Learning. Collectively its membership, of nearly 120 organisations now including JT, is working towards eliminating child sexual abuse imagery from the internet.
Officer for JT, said: “The issue of children accessing inappropriate material on-line, whether through a computer, tablet or mobile phone, is one which JT as a responsible operator takes very seriously indeed. The Truth About Recruitment All too often I hear from my candidates that the agencies they have previously signed up to haven’t taken their needs into account, called them back or really listened to what the candidate is hoping to achieve by changing job or even career. It is a source of frustration for many, just how do you select a consultant that you know is going to be right for you? A Consultant that won’t pigeon-hole you to suit their needs. Firstly, there is a common misconception that needs to be remedied; Professional recruiters work for the clients, not the candidates, this seems a little erroneous, after all every consultancy markets themselves as a company that understands their candidates’ requirements yet few of those recruiters will work outside of their registered positions. As a candidate you are likely to only see positions that already exist on the consultants books, it is, after all, these vacant positions the consultant is trying to fill. It is matchmaking in its most traditional form. And wrong so very wrong! Let me begin; The first quality you need to be a truly effective recruiter is the ability to create opportunity
for both your clients and candidates, the best recruiters will, for their candidates, create roles within companies and seek, attract, or headhunt talent for their clients, next is honesty, if you didn’t hear back from that agency it is because they couldn’t help you or didn’t understand you but weren’t honest enough to tell you. I speak to many potential candidates every day but do not work with all of them, if I feel the candidate and I are not a good match, I pass and recommend another agency better placed to work with them. There are many reasons I will refrain from working with a particular candidate, if they are already working with numerous other consultancies, I won’t waste my time because it signals to me that the candidate is only interested in finding another job, not that they want the RIGHT job, if a candidate is jumping ship purely for monetary reasons I say thanks, but no thanks. Why? Because in order to be the most effective recruiter I can be the Candidate and I need to have a common goal. When placing candidates my goal is to achieve and offer a prospect that presents a genuine opportunity for the candidates’ advancement,
professional and personal development. By following this ethos I can guarantee that my clients are acquiring from me truly talented people that can add tangible value to their business by the addition of my candidates skill set and knowledge.
it. You need to tell your recruiter where you want your ideal destination to be, much like a pilot we will find a way to get you there and discuss with you any potential turbulence but we need to know where we’re flying to!
A reputable recruiter can add a great amount of value to your job search, and will work tirelessly to source you the right opportunity in the right company whilst adding value to their clients. To get the most from your recruiter you need to understand what they expect and how to work with them, it is after all a partnership! So first and foremost be honest, the base of any good relationship is trust. Listen, if your recruiter is good they will know your market well, your recruiter is also your advisor, use them. Be Loyal and have a clear idea of what you want, this does not mean your requirements need to be black and white and non-negotiable but if a candidate pitches up on my doorstep, is registered with 7 other agencies and just wants a job, any job I would quickly hand them back their CV, wish them luck in their search and I wouldn’t think twice about
Finally, remember the recruiter/ candidate relationship should be two way so keep them in the loop; communicate any changes that affect your job search and most of all trust your recruiters’ judgement. Marie-Clara Thaureux Recruitment Director Layton Andrews
