End of the road Guns and gun owners in Jersey has fallen for paper school bus tickets Transport and Technical Services (TTS) and LibertyBus are advising all students and parents that the old-style paper school bus tickets, which are in the process of being phased out following the introduction of the LibertyBus Student Avanchicard, will no longer be valid for travel after the last day of the current school year on Friday 18 July 2014. The Student Avanchicard, which operates in a similar fashion to the well-established London Oyster card, was introduced by LibertyBus in 2013. This simple and secure stored-value electronic smartcard has quickly become the favoured method of payment for journeys to and from school by bus. Unlike the paper tickets, it can also be used on all public transport services on non-schooldays, adding an extra level of flexibility and helping to speed up bus boarding times by eliminating on-board cash handling. Craig Miller, Public Transport Planner at TTS said: “Students have been using paper school bus tickets on school bus services for many years. However, they were
always vulnerable to loss, theft, or damage, and it has been planned for some time to replace them with modern electronic smartcard ticketing. All of these problems are solved by the Student Avanchicard that has gradually been replacing the paper tickets, as the stored credit can easily be transferred to a replacement card if required.” He continued, “Now that the vast majority of bus journeys to and from school are made using a Student Avanchicard, it is time to take the last few old-style tickets out of circulation. I would like to encourage those who have not yet obtained their Student Avanchicard to do so at Liberation Station over the coming weeks.” As stocks at schools and retailers have been run down since the start of the year, many outlets have already sold out of the old-style tickets, which will be withdrawn shortly from the small number of shops that still have supplies on sale. Students and parents in possession of full books of unused tickets are able to exchange them for Student Avanchicard credit at Liberation Station until September 2014.
Police records show there are 1,514 firearm owners which is a 16% drop over the past two years. Between them, the island’s gun owners keep 9,328 guns, including air rifles and pistols, which is 4% down since 2012. Gun ownership in Jersey has been in the spotlight since a Glock 9mm pistol went missing from an unlocked car on Friday 30 May. The pistol was handed in two days later by a member of the public. Jersey’s population is estimated to be about 99,000 which means there is

one gun per 11 inhabitants. Derek Bernard, honorary secretary of the Jersey Shooting Federation, said bureaucracy and controls were discouraging people from taking up shooting. “It’s pressure. It’s the administrative effort that goes into filling in forms and having people come and view your storage arrangements,” said Mr Bernard. “There’s nowhere in the world where gun control has produced any social benefit,” he said.

Mandarin Chinese introduced into Jersey Eisteddfod The Modern Languages Section of the Deutsche Bank Festival of the Performing Arts will see the addition of Mandarin Chinese to its range of classes for the first time this year.

The addition means that the Modern Languages Section of the Jersey Eisteddfod Festival, which is sponsored by Deutsche Bank and supported by the Jersey Arts Trust, now comprises seven different languages, with Spanish, German, Italian, Polish, Portuguese and Japanese already included, whilst French and Jèrriais are featured in their own Sections. Three Chinese classes will be introduced into this year’s Festival, under primary, secondary and adult categories, providing an opportunity for people of all ages in Jersey to have a go at learning to say a few words in Mandarin. The shortest poem on the syllabus is just 30 syllables long. Tim Nash, teacher of Mandarin Chinese and owner of local company Access China, commented: “Mandarin Chinese is the most spoken language in the world and in Jersey over 500 people have learned some Mandarin
Chinese in the last four years through Access China. Mandarin Chinese is the fastest growing modern foreign language in UK schools, and this year the States of Jersey are considering whether or not to introduce it into the Island’s school curriculums. “One in five human beings speaks Mandarin Chinese, so it can’t be that hard! Every word is just one syllable and words do not change form: that means no plurals, no tenses, no endings – all the things that people find difficult about the European languages that we normally learn. If you’ve had a bad experience with learning a foreign language before, then Mandarin is the language for you!” The Deutsche Bank Festival of the Performing Arts takes place from early November until early December and includes classes in Modern Languages, French, Jèrriais, Dance, Music, and English Speech and Drama, at various venues across the island. Entries are now being accepted for this year’s Festival and details of the classes can be found in the syllabus of the Jersey Eisteddfod 2014, which can be downloaded from the Jersey Eisteddfod website www.jerseyeisteddfod.org.je.

The Ana Leaf Foundation sponsored Jersey Cricket in Schools programme, now in its 18th year, kicks off this term benefiting some 2,000 boys and girls in the island’s Primary and Secondary schools. The scheme, run by Jersey Cricket Board has proved to be the ideal vehicle for grass roots cricket development and is the envy of most European countries. Involving curriculum time lessons and after-school clubs, it introduces cricket to primary school children employing qualified cricket coaches. Tony Hoyland, Deputy Head at Bel Royal Primary School said that his school accesses the programme across the whole of KS2 throughout the year as part of its “Striking and Fielding Games” programme. “We find the coaches are excellent at delivering a progression of the skills and a game to reinforce those skills in an environment in which all pupils feel valued and are able to achieve success and development within their own individual skill sets – be that from learning the basic skills to Primary Island representative level.”
Jersey’s National Team’s recent successes on the international stage has raised the profile of the game locally which has been a vital tool used to promote the game in Jersey. “The impressive trophies have been taken to school assemblies by the senior island team members who were able to tell the children a little more about how they were won,” said Chris Minty, Jersey Cricket’s Chief Executive Officer.
Funding provided by the Ana Leaf Foundation since 2013, has allowed Jersey Cricket to employ additional staff and extend the scheme not only to include some children in Years 1 and 2 but also students from the island’s secondary schools. It has also enabled the scheme to run in both the Spring and Summer Terms. This year’s programme will involve three Development Coaches enabling Jersey Crick-

The programme brings cricket to almost all the island’s Primary Schools in four or five session blocks delivering an ‘Introduction to Cricket Programme’ to pupils from Year 1 to Year 6, continuing into secondary school Year 8 if required.

Organisers of this year’s Kids Triathlon are hoping to encourage more youngsters to take part in this summer’s event and raise even more money for Islanders with blood cancer.
Every week someone in Jersey is diagnosed with some form of the disease either leukaemia, lymphoma, myeloma or a rarer blood cancer and most have to go to the UK for treatment. Last year 200 youngsters aged between seven and thirteen took part in the event, the first of its kind to be held in the Island. It raised around £4,000 for Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research Jersey – every penny going towards research to find a cure. The organisers hope to see double the number of children signing up to take part in this year’s event which is taking place on 5 July at Les Quennevais Sports Centre, starting at 1pm. Airtel-Vodafone are sponsoring this event.
Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research Jersey Chairperson Chris Rowland said: “We felt it was a good way to encourage the development of their skills at swimming, cycling and running and also to have the responsibility of finding

How to make a Caipirinha...
Caipirinha is Brazil’s national cocktail, made with cachaça, sugar and lime.
• 5 cl cachaça • Half a lime cut into 4 wedges • 2 teaspoons brown sugar
Not so keen on Lime then why not try a Caipifruta? Caipifruta is a variation made with cachaça and other fruits instead of lime. Popular fruits to use are kiwifruit, passion fruit, pineapple, lemon and mango.
Place lime and sugar into an old fashioned glass and muddle (mash the two ingredients together using a muddler or a wooden spoon). Fill the glass with crushed ice and add the Cachaça.

Brazilian architecture: There's more to Brazil than the World Cup The architecture of a country is defined, to an enormous degree, by its history and heritage. On the other hand, the architecture also forms a major part of the character and identity of a destination. Therefore, exploring the architecture of a country reveals much about it, and remains a very important part of tourism. Brazil was colonised by Portuguese explorers centuries ago, and this culture has continued to influence the look and feel of this country. Today, there remain a few examples of this Portuguese architecture of yesteryear. These colonial-style buildings give the country a really charming element. However, the modernist approach is still the overriding architectural style of Brazil. This style is characterised by minimalism and the absence of excess frill or decoration. It is simple, with clean lines and a functional form. This particular type of architecture was adopted after World War Two, when function took precedence over form. Oscar Niemeyer remains one of the world’s best known modernist architects, and certainly left a very clear imprint on the architecture of Brazil.

MAKE AN EDUCATED INVESTMENT In the past decade, overseas investment in the UK has been steadily rising and an asset group that has been particularly popular is property. British real estate has always been regarded as a stable investment type which has led to heavy spending in this sector over the last few years. A property type which has predominantly caught buyers’ eye is student buy-to-let. Due to a considerable uplift in the number of students in the UK there is now a drastic shortage of suitable accommodation and subsequently there has been a significant increase in demand. This has been recognised globally by investment professionals, resulting in student property emerging as the UK’s strongest asset class. Within this category, purpose-built accommodation developments are thought to provide the highest returns. Vita Student is a provider of private accommodation in the UK and its products represent the very finest student residences on the market. It offers bespoke studio apartments which have been specifically designed for students, alongside a large communal ‘hub’ which includes relaxation, study and social areas. It currently has eight developments across the UK in popular university cities such as Manchester, Southampton and Exeter. The latest development has just been launched in Sheffield which serves the needs of 63,000 students and offers investors an assured 35% net return over five years. More than 1,000 Vita Student apartments have been sold by the exclusive sales agent, Select Property, to investors eager to benefit from this flourishing sector. A significant amount of these apart-
ments have been sold to investors from the Channel Islands who are looking for an alternative buy-to-let investment. Nick and Penny Adams from Guernsey are two such buyers.
Believing in British student property Nick and Penny Adams live in Guernsey and have recently purchased two Vita Student apartments in Southampton and Exeter. Nick commented: “We’ve previously owned several buy-to-let properties but this is the first time we have experimented with a handsoff opportunity.
“We have two properties in Guernsey and one in the Bahamas which have all performed well but haven’t been as profitable as they could have been. For example rental yields in Guernsey are very modest, and buying abroad can cause a lot of issues due to currency exchanges and complicated tax laws. Buying in the UK, and especially in the South, makes sense as the pound is strong at the moment and we’re close enough to visit whenever we want. “We decided to buy 2 units in Southampton & Exeter as we know both cities quite well having got friends in Exmoor and I actually taught at
Southampton University. Because of this we feel like we have a good understanding of the student market and know the reputation of the universities – crucially they’ve got growing student bodies with a large proportion of overseas students.
excellent; the information has been insightful and readily available and our investment consultant at Select Property – David – has been responsive and offered helpful guidance in regards to which unit to purchase. The financial and contracts process has also been well-organised. All of this has made us optimistic about the rental return the developments will achieve once they are completed.”
“The fully-managed aspect of the scheme is also a huge bonus as it saves us from having to source a separate management company. We know that Vita Student will manage the building and the tenants Visit www.selectproperty.com to properly as the company is intrin- find out more about Vita Student sically linked to the development. and its latest project in Sheffield, from its exclusive sales partner Se“The experience so far has been lect Property.

New president for The Senior Channel Islands Co- regulatory appointments operative Society Former Jersey senator, Ben Shenton, has been elected president of The Channel Islands’ Cooperative Society. At the annual meetings, which this year were held on 13th May in Jersey and 14th May in Guernsey, the members decide who will sit on the Co-operative Society’s pan-Channel Island board, which is comprised of four Jersey members and four Guernsey members. All of the existing directors were re-elected. The directors then elect a president from among their number. After serving for five years as president, Peter Roffey decided to step down and Mr Shenton, the former vice president, was elected as his replacement. Alexander Fearn from Jersey and Tanya Dorrity from Guernsey were chosen to fill the roles of joint vice president, the first time the board has had two members occupy the vice presidency position.
welcomed
Jersey Finance has welcomed the announcement by the Jersey Financial Services Commission (JFSC) of the recruitment of three new, senior level appointments.
Colin Macleod, CEO said that he wished to thank Mr Roffey for his continued hard work and dedication to The Channel Islands’ Cooperative Society. He commented: ‘We are incredibly grateful for the significant contribution Peter has made in what amounts to five years as president. In that time, the Society’s turnover
has increased significantly and our business interests have expanded. I’m delighted that he is staying on the board as a non-executive director. I’d also like to take this opportunity to welcome our former vice president, Ben, to the role of president. I am very much looking forward to working more closely with him.’
Geoff Cook, CEO Jersey Finance Limited, commented: ‘The announcement that the JFSC has recruited three immensely experienced regulators to the executive group, alongside a refining of its organisational structure, is most welcome. The additional resource at a senior level and the revised structure will be helpful to the industry when seeking regulatory approval for various entity licences and fund products. Furthermore, with increasing amounts of international business attracted to our shores and at a time when regulatory matters play such an important role in global financial services, the calibre of the hires is impressive and can only reinforce the capabilities of the Commission and highlight Jersey’s evident commitment to providing consistently high standards of regulatory oversight.’
DIRECTOR OF CLIENT SERVICES Client Services Director required to join a rapidly growing Funds Company. Forget the Computer, Coffee is good for Business. Let me start this month’s blog by saying thank you to all those who have got in touch to comment on and compliment last months ‘the truth about recruitment’. Some have been existing contacts, and others have just called because they identified with what was written. This sudden (and unexpected) response led me to start thinking about how long it had been since I had ‘’caught up’’ with some of my contacts, or made new ones, and I don’t mean via LinkedIn or FB, but in person. So this months recruitment blog is focused on Networking and Social Media and although not directly related to the broader topic of recruitment I felt this a more important subject and certainly a more interesting read than the typical ‘’ten top tips for your CV’’. Time’s past networking’s sole meaning was understood as attendance at an event (In person) whilst strategically spreading your time across a room of ‘like-minded’ individuals, highly productive if each person in the room falls into your target networking pool, but this isn’t always the case and doesn’t necessarily ensure your time is spent most valuably; it is easy to see why people have turned from coffee to computers.
porate image with the soon to be launched Graph search. These leaders have quickly been followed by many ‘networking’ sites specific to all sectors! So what great things does this do for us professionally? Now instead of lunching with a room full of contemporaries whilst trying to decide where your time is best spent you can scroll down your computer screen scanning, job title, company, and even interests. If someone comments on an article you wrote, great, your connected – suddenly you’re in their ‘network’. There is a constant debate, prediction even that many high street stores and consultancies (e.g. recruitment, travel etc.) will soon be a thing of the past, with thanks to the ease and accessibility of the Internet and social media – a sentiment I don’t happen to agree with for reasons this post wont explore. Are we to predict that networking events are set to go the same way? Will we watch conferences through our computer screens? Network only through hyperspace? It is a given that Social Media has changed the way we interact, it has been inherent in expanding our ‘networking’ pool but are we forgetting how to TALK to each other?
Enter social media: In May 2003 LinkedIn was launched, the birth of tweeting was a momentous occasion in July 2006 and in September 2006 we saw Facebook open its doors to anyone thirteen plus, improving their cor-
Not too long ago I attended a breakfast seminar and had the pleasure of spending my time with someone who probably doesn’t sit in my ‘like-minded networking’ pool, however for the best part of an hour we discussed this
lady’s new venture, an artist she was working with light perception. This conversation probably did little to enhance my ‘business career’; like-wise I doubt I shed any light (excuse the pun) on her artistic venture, I am the first to admit my drawings resemble those of my two year old god daughters, but personally I found her ideas fascinating, enjoyed our conversation, was smiling and I was inspired! As an avid social media user, I’m constantly in awe of our technological advances, you will find me blogging, updating, tweeting and using Graph Search when it’s launched. The fact that we can read the ideas, thoughts and suggestions of others across the globe is remarkable and without doubt professionally productive. That said you will also find me chatting away over lunch or coffee, one-toone or as part of a larger group. I believe nothing can beat that personal touch. In this day when our contacts, friends and sometimes families lives are discovered through the FB news feed or your LinkedIn updates I have to ask – Should we be spending a little less time behind the computer screen and a little more time talking? So how does this tie in to recruitment? Well next time you are out having a coffee or
attending one of the many interesting seminars Jersey has on offer, look for me and come say hi, you never know how our ‘connection’ may come in useful in the future. Marie-Clara Thaureux Recruitment Director Layton Andrews
