Branchage Film Festival Branchage: An ancient hedgecutting tradition in Jersey. It's also the name of a sharp and savvy film festival. Branchage Festival returns for its fifth edition this year, taking place from 24th – 28th September, with film screenings, live music, comedy and spoken word events, educational talks, food events and parties taking place in an array of historic, eccentric and picturesque locations across the island. Whilst still retaining the old Branchage spirit, there are a number of new additions and changes to the festival. After having previously been centered around the island’s capital Parish of St Helier, Branchage is shifting its focus in 2014 to the west of the island, in particular St Aubin’s Village. Home to the island’s first harbour, this historical, beautiful, creative and friendly corner of Jersey is the perfect location for this year’s festival.

Chart-topping British band Toploader are looking for a local musician to support them when they make their Jersey Opera House debut on Saturday 20th September. Consultation launched on same-sex marriage Islanders are being asked to give their views on the form that any legislation on same-sex marriage would take if it was to be introduced in Jersey.
- Monday 29 September, 6.30 pm to 7.45 pm, St Helier Town Hall - Tuesday 30 September, 6.30 pm to 7.45 pm, St Helier Town Hall
The consultation has been launched by the Chief Minister’s Department and will give all Islanders the chance to take part in an online survey and to attend public meetings to comment on the legislation options outlined in the consultation.
To ensure a place at one of the meetings, anyone who would like to attend is asked to book a place in advance by emailing a.hamon2@gov.je or calling 01534 440682. If the numbers attending the meetings exceed venue capacity, priority will be given to people with a booking.
The purpose of the consultation is to give people the context of the legal options which would be available if Jersey was to introduce same-sex marriage. It also looks at other issues related to equal marriage, such as humanist marriage and the potential introduction of civil partnerships for couples of the oppositesex. The findings from this consultation will be set out in the report which the Chief Minister Senator Ian Gorst will aim to take to the States Assembly in late November.
The consultation sets out a number of different options in relation to equal marriage and asks respondents: - Which of the same-sex marriage options they think is most appropriate for Jersey. - Whether Jersey should introduce humanist and non-religious marriage for both opposite- and same-sex couples. - Whether civil partnerships should be introduced for opposite-sex couples, in addition to same-sex couples. - How specific issues relating to grounds for divorce and grounds for dissolution of a civil partnership.

A total donation of £63,000 has been made to Autism Jersey by the 28 trekkers who took up the ‘JT Kilimanjaro Climb’ challenge at the beginning of 2014. Reaching the 5,895-metre (19,336 ft) summit of Mount Kilimanjaro over an eight day trek, 28 intrepid Islanders, completed the challenge after months of physical preparation and charity fundraising. Together they faced a number of gruelling physical challenges along the way, including the change in altitude and weather conditions ranging from snow and ice to rain and drizzle. The team’s efforts have resulted in a considerable donation to Autism Jersey which will be set towards the Charity’s new purpose-built centre at St. Saviour, which will be designed to help those living with autism in Jersey. Protect Baby Grass Snakes Hatching Now Gardeners who want to help save Jersey’s rarest reptile from extinction are urged to leave their compost heap alone until October to avoid disturbing any baby grass snakes or incubating eggs. The non-venomous and harmless reptile is the focus of a recently launched campaign ‘Think Grass Snake’ by the Department of the Environment. Doctoral student Rob Ward of the University of Kent is carrying out research on ways to save Jersey’s only native snake. The grass snake relies on warm humid environments such as those found in compost and manure heaps to incubate its eggs, so “Compost and manure heaps are an inprotecting these nesting habitats is an im- credibly valuable feature in gardens and portant step in preventing extinction. natural areas for many species, especially so for grass snakes at this time of year. Farmhouse Blackberry and Apple Pie Method (Prep: 40 mins, Cook: 1 hr 30)
1. Heat oven to 190C/170C fan/gas 5. On a floured surface, roll out twothirds of the pastry and use it to line a 23cm loosebottom fluted tart tin, leaving a slight overhang and keeping any pastry scraps. Chill the tart for 10 mins. Prick the base lightly with a fork, then fill with baking paper and baking beans. Place in the oven on a baking sheet for 20 mins, remove the beans and paper, then bake for 10 mins more until sandy brown and biscuity. Remove from the oven.
Ingredients (Serves 8) 2 tbsp plain flour, plus extra for dusting 750g/1lb 10oz sweet dessert pastry 1kg Bramley apples, peeled, cored, halved and sliced 400g blackberries 140g caster sugar, plus extra for sprinkling pinch ground cinnamon 1 egg beaten with 2 tbsp milk
2. Tip the apples into a large bowl and microwave on High for 3 mins. Toss in the berries, sugar, cinnamon and 2 tbsp flour with a pinch of salt and pile it into the case, saving 14 berries for later. 3. Roll the remaining pastry and trimmings together into a square roughly 30 x 30cm. Cut out 8 strips of pastry about 3 x 30cm – if you cut round an average ruler the size will be perfect. Weave the strips of pastry evenly over the fruit to create a lattice pattern and push them into the edge of the tart. Trim the overhang of pastry, brush the lattice heavily with the egg, then scatter generously with more sugar. Plonk the remaining berries into the gaps, then bake for 1 hr until brown and bubbling. Leave the pie to cool for 30 mins until no longer scorching. Scatter with more sugar, slice and serve.

Have Your Say on Jersey’s Property Tax System 11
A public consultation has been launched to gather Islanders’ views on Jersey’s property tax system. As a small island without significant mineral resources, Jersey’s principal natural asset is its land. It is in the best interests of Islanders, current and future, that land is used in the most efficient way possible, to ensure that Jersey continues to meet the needs of those who make their lives here. The Property Tax Review consultation was published alongside the Draft Budget Statement 2015. The consultation document, now available online at www.gov.je/consult explains the aims of the review being carried out by Treasury and Resources. Their view aims to ensure that Jersey’s property tax system is joined-up,balanced and has no unintended consequences, while also supporting the States strategic objectives. To help achieve this, the review outlines six proposed principles, based on the independent advice received, which could be used to shape any future changes to the property tax system. The publication goes on to explain what adopting these principles might mean in practice, by describing potential changes that could be made to three areas of Jersey’s property tax system. These are included as examples of the way in which the proposed principles could be applied.
Treasury and Resources Minister Senator Philip Ozouf said a well-functioning housing market was fundamental to Jersey’s economic and social future and that an effective property tax system could play a key part in that. “The guiding purpose of this review and consultation is to identify principles which will shape a coherent property tax system,” he said. In identifying these principles, Treasury and Resources sought independent advice from international tax experts who have provided an economic overview of the latest economic thinking on property taxes and outlined a series of potential changes that could be considered here.

Volkswagen Van Heritage Delivering the goods. It's what we've always done. Today's much-loved, award-winning Volkswagen vans are only the latest step in a 60year journey that started with one clever idea.
In 1947, Dutch importer Ben Pon spotted workers at Volkswagen's Wolfsburg factory using a strippeddown Beetle to move parts around. Inspired, he sketched a 'box on wheels' - a versatile commercial vehicle that could be adapted to a multitude of uses. As we know today, the idea didn't stop there. The sketch caught the attention of the general director of the VW factory, who gave the go-ahead for its production. Rounded front sections were added to the square-edged box, creating the friendly face which went on to become a familiar smile the world over. In 1949 the Transporter was born, and the van world has never looked back since.
Not just a van, but an institution
By 1954, as the 100,000th van rolled off the production line, the iconic Transporter - in all its various versions - had secured its status as an essential feature of the road. It took just another 8 years before we saw the 1,000,000th Transporter. By 1968, after losing its smiley face and gaining a panoramic windscreen, the Transporter T2 was celebrating the 2,000,000 milestone.
A big new era for the Transporter
The first LT utility vehicle, a modern large Transporter, was built at the factory in Hanover in 1975. It signalled Volkswagen's courageous move into the light truck sector, and opened a new chapter in the history of the company. And we kept on pushing the boundaries with the arrival of the T3 in 1979, which welcomed a bold era of technological advances like diesel, water-cooled engines and "syncro" four-wheel drive.
The family grows
The Transporter has been the mainstay of our van range since 1950. But nowadays, of course, it has a whole family of Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles around it. There's the compact Caddy, which sports city-friendly dimensions and a car-like feel whilst still hauling big loads. There's the Caravelle, offering a people carrier with executive-level comfort. The Crafter is the van for seriously big tasks, with a payload of up to three tonnes. Our definitive Volkswagen camper van - the California - is a true home from home. And finally, the Amarok joined us is 2011, whose off-road and load-shifting credentials earned it the 'International Pick-up of the year' award.
Carrying forward
The millennium saw the 50th anniversary of the legendary Volkswagen Transporter. 50 years of consistently demonstrating the Volkswagen qualities of reliability, economy and efficiency. With such a rich heritage behind it, the future continues to look bright for the Transporter. In 2003 we launched the latest iteration of our iconic van - the Transporter T5. The world's best-selling van went on to win the 2004 What Van? Van Of The Year award, and has continued to win awards ever since. The modern Transporter continues to embody everything which made the original so special - space, versatility, reliability - but it's now more efficient than ever. Getting the job done efficiently and reliably has been at Volkswagen's heart for the last 60 years, and that's why you can trust us to deliver a van that works for you.

First LED Hut store opens in St Helier
Jersey-based business LED Hut has opened the doors to its first shop in St Helier, allowing residents to switch on to big money and energy savings with its range of eco-friendly LED lights. With energy bills at an all-time high, the new Jersey shop could see customers saving a huge 90% on their lighting costs by simply replacing traditional light bulbs with high quality LED alternatives. Not only will people make significant savings, they will also cut their energy use – all whilst enjoying longlasting, stylish lighting in their homes. With more than 1,000 products in stock, the new shop showcases the wide variety of LED lighting options available, from standard bulbs and spotlights to strip lights and floodlights. With a live wall display, customers get to see firsthand the different colours on offer – whether it’s cool white (for bathrooms/ kitchens), warmer shades (for bedrooms/living areas) or daylight white for the ultimate natural glow. LED Hut’s expert team is also on hand to answer any questions and ensure customers are selecting the very best LED lighting solutions for their homes. “The new shop will really help demonstrate to people just how stylish and versatile LEDs are,” says marketing manager Chris Evans. “There are a number of misconceptions about LEDs, but we’re here to explain why everyone should be making the switch – not only to achieve the best lighting look
in the home, but for long term savings too. People genuinely don’t realise how much inefficient lighting is costing them, or that they could be saving hundreds year-on-year from a simple light bulb switch. Whilst they do cost more upfront, LEDs will typically pay for themselves in around six months and will continue to significantly cut lighting bills thereafter.” LED light bulbs can be used with any traditional lighting fitting, they reach full brightness at the flick of a switch and provide the same light intensity you would expect from a standard bulb or halogen. Unlike traditional lights, which lose most of their energy through heat, LEDs are extremely efficient, using a massive 90% less energy. They are also far more durable, providing an impressive 50,000 hours of consistent, quality light (the equivalent of around 20-25 years, dependent on use). savings in excess of £10m and a reduction of approximately 27,000 tonnes of LED Hut is the UK’s leading specialist carbon emissions. Digital Skills Scrutiny Sub-panel Publishes Interim Report The Digital Skills Scrutiny Sub-panel, chaired by Connétable Steve Pallett, has published its interim report looking into the development of digital skills across the Island.
Is Jersey Suffering From ‘Infobesity’? An upcoming Jersey seminar will look at how information overload is impacting the health of our working population and urge businesses to rethink how they use technology. ‘Infobesity’ – the over-consumption of information – is raising the stress levels of almost half of our office workers according to new research by independent research agency, YouGov. Jersey based technology innovators Prosperity 24.7 will host a groundbreaking seminar in partnership with Microsoft to address this topic on Monday 8th September at the Pomme D’or Hotel. The event will be led by thought leader and author Dave Coplin, Chief Envisioning Officer for Microsoft. He will speak to the Jersey business community on the urgent need to harness the power of the machine by taking back control and using technology to our advantage. The seminar follows the findings of YouGov’s research report titled ‘Defying Digital Distraction’. Results conclude that 55% of us often experience information overload, and 58% have checked for work messages in the first 15 minutes of waking up in the morning. 43% of office workers surveyed feel stressed and
another 34% feel overwhelmed by the information they encounter at work. Commentators are calling it a ‘digital deluge’ whereby a haze of information and devices vie for our attention to the point where they are beginning to remove us from the real world. At the same time, business leaders are worrying that they might miss the next big technology trend and fail to realise the true potential of the big data wave.
The Review has focused particularly on examining whether the Education Minister’s Vision for IT in Education: ‘Thinking Differently’ is capable of playing an appropriate role in delivering the skills required by an emerging digital industry in Jersey. Both documents have been seen by stakeholders as representing steps in a positive direction towards creating a digitally enabled community, which could be of significant economic and social benefit to the Island. However, there are concerns that the timelines of the Digital Jersey strategy and Education Sport and Culture Vision do not appear to converge as would be necessary to meet Digital Jersey’s short and medium term goals regarding local jobs. This could place pressure on inward migration. There has been significant political and
financial investment made by the States in the growth of a digital sector in order to diversify Jersey’s economy, not least through: The establishment of Digital Jersey, which has additional aims to expand ‘e-government’ (providing States’ services online), broaden community access to and use of digital technology, and support and nurture new IT companies The £40 million invested in the roll out of Gigabit Jersey to provide increased and efficient broadband services. Sub-Panel Chairman Connétable Steve Pallett said: ‘Although the Sub Panel is of a view that both ESC and Digital Jersey are taking positive steps forward, and that can only be to the benefit of not only those studying at our excellent schools but also in further education and beyond, there is more to be done if we are not to miss the ‘Digital boat’ and end up a follower in the digital market rather than a leader.’
Dave Coplin, who is Microsoft’s UK Chief Envisioning Officer, will discuss the overwhelming fear that ‘the machines are taking over’. He will explore how the rapidly rising volume of information is affecting all aspects of our lives as individuals, as consumers and customers, as workers, and in business. He will then explain how we can transform the digital deluge from a problem into an incredible opportunity to redress the balance and reimagine how we live, work and do business. The event will be held from 12pm to 2pm on Monday 8th September at the Pomme D’or Hotel. Tickets cost £25 and include a light lunch. They can be purchased online at www.eventbrite. com/e/is-jersey-suffering-an-infobesityepidemic-tickets-12663423641

Recruitment Ice Cream and Recruiting... The Summer Slowdown

By Marie-Clara - Layton Andrews
The smell of suntan lotion mixed with the fresh sea breeze, ice creams, holidays and late evening BBQ’s are just some of the signs that summer has come to Jersey, everyone looks a little healthier in the Summer months, there are relaxed smiles and a slight tranquillity rests over.. Well… everything. Welcome to the Summer Slowdown! As this is a recruitment blog, and not one about icecream (although I could give a first-hand review of the many different flavours Jersey Dairy have to offer) I will continue this article by saying that understanding the recruitment cycle, and the part summer has to play, can give your job search an edge.
novelty of not having to do the school run has quickly worn off. Recruitment is often the last item on the todo list over these months, not least because organising interviews can be difficult when the three Directors you need are enjoying some R&R in different worldly locations. The same can be said regarding new vacancy sign off, provisional offers and if it gets that far, new staff training all of which are that bit harder to really focus on when having to juggle several holiday calendars.

For those of you that are considering a more imminent career move don’t panic, as I pen this article there is a familiar patter of rain on my window that suggests summer is drawing to an end and children will shortly be returning School. Q4 holds by far the most complex of hiring dynamics, traditionally accounting for over 1/3 of all the years new engagements; September, October and November consistently see a huge increase in recruiting following the quiet of July and August and in advance of the lull in December.

New Appointment Of ‘Home 19
Grown’ Talent At Switch Digital Local digital marketing and technology agency Switch Digital has recently announced the appointment of eighteen year old Nicolle Maltwood as Digital Marketing Assistant. Prior to being appointed as a full time member of the team, Nicolle undertook twelve months of work experience with the St Helier based agency, combining work in the agency office with her A level studies at Beaulieu Convent School. The relationship started when, in November 2012, Switch Digital introduced Beaulieu to a nationwide digital initiative – BIMA’s D-Day. The campaign was designed to celebrate pioneering teaching and learning techniques and to engage secondary school students by exploring how digital learning can help provide the key skill sets that are required in the workplace today.
experience with the innovative team. Discussing the appointment of Nicolle, Managing Director of Switch Digital Damon Eastwood said, “As a Digital Jersey mentor, I am passionate about the industry and its evolution, so I was very excited to be able to offer this opportunity to Nicolle. She has already shown herself to be a dedicated and able member of our growing team and she has made a positive impact with many of our clients.” Commenting on her new position Nicolle said, “I really enjoy working within a great team and seeing that the work we do at Switch is really helping our clients achieve their business objectives. I also love the client interaction, meeting the many different Switch clients, learning about the challenges facing their individual businesses and helping to provide digital solutions to help them.”
It was after taking part in this initiative that Nicolle decided that the digital industry offered some great opportunities and an equality not found in all sectors. After being mentored throughout the campaign by two of the Switch Digital directors, she requested the opportunity to Along with a comprehensive in-house gain more knowledge and a further insight training schedule Nicolle is currently into the industry by undertaking work undertaking the newly introduced Cod-

With businesses and schools working more closely together, as Beaulieu and Switch Digital have done, we can

This model takes a time investment from industry but produces a higher quality of employee in return. I thank Damon and his team for their hard work and wish Nicolle all the best for her future career in IT.”
