The Radisson Blu Waterfront Hotel, Jersey has once again proven their high level of service when they claimed another success by winning a Gold Award from Taste Jersey for their in-house Waterfront Restaurant & Terrace; this prize was awarded by David Le Carteret, Director of Tourism, and praises ‘the exceptional quality of the Cuisine and Customer Care’.
Executive Chef Vincent Duffy and Food & Drinks Manager Sven Wiltink are delighted and say that ‘it is great to see that our hard work has paid off and that our achievements have been recognised, for our personal service attitude and delicious, local menu.’ The award comes following their £1 million refurbishment, which was completed at the end of March 2014, and has completely transformed the ground floor of the Radisson Blu Waterfront Hotel, Jersey. The newly refurbished restaurant and bar areas include a modern design, several different seating ar-

Pulling a Pint for Plémont Christmas is coming and there is no better way to toast the start of the festive season than with a pint of Jersey’s own Liberation Christmas Ale. The beer, which is a firm favourite at this time of year, relies on a very unique local ingredient, Black Butter. Each year Liberation Group, which produces Liberation Christmas Ale at its Longueville brewery, supports the National Trust for Jersey by making a donation towards the charity’s projects, in return for a supply of the black stuff, which is produced during the Black Butter making event at the Elms in October. In the past Liberation Group has raised funds towards the restoration of 16 New Street, the trust’s iconic Regency property that it has painstakingly brought back to life, and the Wetlands Centre at St Ouen. Customers sampling the beer this year will be given an opportunity to make a donation to the National Trust for Jersey’s campaign to restore the headland at Plémont, in St Ouen. Charles Alluto, Chief Executive of the National trust for Jersey said: “Everyone in Jersey knows how hard the National Trust for Jersey has battled to save the natural headland at Plémont from development and for the enjoyment of all islanders. Our campaign to meet that objective continues and this year we will be using Liberation Group’s most welcome support to carry on our work there”.
Liberation Christmas Ale will be launched at the opening of La Fête dé Noué, Jersey’s Christmas festival. Free samples of the beer will be available at the Cock and Bottle on the night and goes on sale in selected Liberation Group pubs, bars and eateries for the remainder of the Christmas period. Liberation Group Chief Executive Mark Crowther said: ‘Our customers like to call this easy drinking beer as ‘Christmas in a Glass’ and with the addition of this fantastic and unique ingredient, it’s easy to see why. The Ale has a rich, ruby red colour and is especially good enjoyed with winter warming meals and mince pies, which will be available as part of La Fête dé Noué launch. We are proud to be supporting the National Trust for Jersey for a sixth consecutive year’.
200 Islanders Share Views On The Ageing Population www.jerseypages.info

Around 200 islanders attended a lively public meeting, organised by Family Nursing & Home Care (FNHC), the leading provider of community nursing and care services in Jersey, to discuss Jersey’s ability to deliver high standards of care to elderly islanders in the future.
simple at what is often a stressful time. Sue Duhamel, policy and strategy director at Social Security, set the scene for the debate by outlining the changing shape of the population; in 1950 a man could be expected to reach the age of 77 and draw a pension for 12 years, a figure, which hadn’t changed a great deal in 100 years. She then went on to state that today a man can expect to live to 85 years and draw a pension for 21 years and by 2050 a man may live to 91, drawing a pension for 26 years.
The debate event, which was also attended by several senior civil servants and politicians, including the incoming Health Minister Deputy Andrew Green, saw four, expert panel members deliver their thoughts before audience members were given an opportunity to ask questions and deliver It was apparent that the panel their own views. was broadly in favour of implementing strategies that will alThe question of choice was also low elderly to stay in their own central, giving islanders the homes for longer. as a 24 hour care support team would become a requirement but also more affordable for the island, ensuring islanders have access to help at any time of day or night if they are alone. Linking to the theme of care in the home, the critical need to recruit and retain good quality care staff and the importance of encouraging young people into the sector became a recurrent
theme. It was acknowledged by Richard Humphries that an ageing population is something to be proud of and that older people can offer a lot to society. It was suggested that consideration should be given to the retraining of older islanders who cannot possibly work to the age of 70 in their current professions, as they’re reliant on being physically fit and mobile. This approach, coupled with an influx of young,
well-trained carers, would go someway to solving the issue of how high quality care can be delivered. FNHC is a Jersey charity providing nursing care in the community from birth to end of life. The charity touches the lives of more islanders than any other charitable organisation, helping children, their families, the sick, the elderly and the dying.
A Case Of Heating Or Eating This Winter?
Text Messages Reduce Missed Appointments
Age Concern Jersey is warning that many pensioners will have to choose between heating and eating this winter.
Text reminders have cut the number of patients missing States medical appointments, figures suggest.
They're calling for a UK-style Winter Fuel Allowance to be paid to every pensioner on the island. Statistics show that in the UK an elderly person dies every seven minutes during the cold, winter months.
Officials expect 18,000 patients to miss appointments in Jersey this year, 17% fewer than the 21,000 missed in 2012. There are no earlier figures.
With Jersey pushing for more elderly care to happen in people's homes, the charity says more needs to be done to make sure people are kept warm.
Assistant health minister John Refault said the reminders, introduced in July 2012, were likely to be having an effect.
The missed appointments still represent 7% of the 255,000 total.
The figures relate to all appointments provided by the health and
social services department, although most of those are at Jersey General Hospital. Health officials say each missed appointment can cost £100, equivalent to £1.8m this year. Constable Refault said that was still too high. He said many patients have initial consultations in Jersey but then have private treatment in the UK and fail to inform the health department. He said: “It’s not cost effective to have highly qualified professionals sitting around twiddling their thumbs.”

news for Jersey. Retaining such an exceptionally high quality credit rating is very important and demonstrates the positive view of the island internationally.
Standard & Poor’s Rating Services has affirmed its initial credit rating of ‘AA+ / A-1+ long and short-term sovereign credit rating with a stable outlook’ including its highest level ‘short-term rating of A-1+’.
BACK WITH A BIGGER & BETTER SHOW! Pink Floyd fans are in for a treat when one of the UK’s top Pink Floyd Shows “UK Pink Floyd Experience” returns to Jersey Opera House with a bigger and better show, The Pulse Tour. The 2 hour show replicates the full live Pink Floyd touring band of the late 80’s and 90’s during the breathtaking “Pulse Tour” and includes three costumed and choreographed backing vocalists, saxophones, two guitarists and two keyboard players, bass and drums. With a full sound and spectacular light show, the band aims to perfect the atmosphere of the great Pink Floyd live including timeless classics from “Dark Side of The Moon” through to “Division Bell” albums in a show that has been known to leave people speechless and visibly emotional as they are taken on a journey of Pink Floyd history. Lead vocalist and guitarist Paul Andrews fronts the band and has a voice that is remarkably similar to David Gilmour’s. Paul has worked hard to perfect his vocal delivery aiming to replicate every nuance and intonation used by Mr Gilmour along with hours of perfecting his guitar techniques and tone.
Paul Andrews is joined by David Power on bass and Mike Bollard on second guitar. Both David and Mike add their vocal talents to help create the big “Floyd Sound.” The three female backing vocalists are Louise Beadle, an established theatre performer in her own right, Marie McNally, who also doubles on Baritone and Tenor saxophones, and Lindsay Martin, who has taken advanced vocals lessons from no less than original Pink Floyd P.U.L.S.E. tour veteran Sam Brown! James Archer is on drums and percussion holding down the Pink Floyd groove. The band is completed by founder member Neil Smallman on Hammond organ and keyboards, along with Dave Woodfield on piano and keyboards, who work together seamlessly to complete the lush Pink Floyd sound. Get your tickets soon; this is likely to be a sell out show! Tickets: £23 Fri 19th December & Sat 20th December | 8.00pm www.jerseyoperahouse.co.uk/show/uk-pinkfloyd-experience-the-pulse-show/

Peter Tabb, of the Road Safety Panel, said serious road injuries and deaths in Jersey were rarely caused by poor maintenance. Transport Minister Eddie Noel has proposed voluntary MOT-style testing. He said the scheme would be an alternative to compulsory testing and could reassure car buyers.
Mr Tabb said accidents were not usually caused by vehicles being in a poor state of repair. "There are lots of practical difficulties with MOTs," he said. "It removes some of the dangers inherent in motor vehicles but I think the point is that if you look at the statistics, very few accidents are caused by the condition of the vehicle."
In 2013 there were 60 serious injuries and three deaths on Jersey's roads. "I have asked officers to look at having a voluntary MOT or safety certificate scheme on a trial basis," said Deputy Noel. "If that works, maybe we can expand it out. It

The traditional Christmas Eve crib service at the Royal Jersey Showground in Trinity has been cancelled. The Trinity Parish Church says the event has become so popular it needs to find a way of limiting numbers. In 2013 over 1,500 people went to the nativity play.
He said: "It was a very difficult decision, it is something we started nine years ago in a small barn and it has grown and grown and grown. "We have now more than outgrown the main exhibition hall. We are going to have to think creatively about how we do things in the future."

Jersey Archive Launch Book Jersey Archive has produced a new book about different areas in Jersey based on their popular ‘What’s your Street’s Story?’ series of talks. Jersey Heritage has been running their highly successful programme of ‘What’s your Street’s Story?’ talks at the Jersey Archive for a number of years. Sponsored by local legal firm Appleby these talks have grown from strength to strength and are now more popular than ever. The book is based on stories discovered whilst researching for the talks and covers ten different local areas. Seven different members of staff wrote at least a chapter each relating to their findings. Readers can learn more about the rise of tourism at Grève de Lecq and Gorey Pier, the development of education in Rouge Bouillon and at St Martin’s Village, the history of mills at Grands Vaux, quarrying at Mont Mado, the construction of the Five Mile Road, the development of communities at La Rocque and Les Quennevais and the more seedy side of St Helier’s history at Pier Road.

Without their backing we would not have been able to put the publication together.” She went on to say, “We have been asked for a long time if we were ever going to put the talks into a publication and we always had that as an ambition and it is wonderful to finally see it come to fruition. We hope that this venture will prove successful enough so that we can produce another book with further stories as we still have a lot of research on areas that we have yet to use.” “It’s also great timing as it would make a great stocking filler for anyone interested in local history this Christmas time.”
Appleby’s Jersey Office Managing Partner, Michael Cushing, commented, “The ‘What’s your Street’s Story?’ initiative has revealed some fascinating and charming tales of our Island’s past. To take you into the festive season and New Year, CCA Galleries International is proud to showcase a new exhibition called ‘Wish Upon A Star’ featuring the latest releases by internationally acclaimed installation, performance artist and painter, Bruce McLean as well as new works by StormStudios. McLean’s latest work includes a series of 50 monotypes; each one is unique; finished by hand with collaged elements and paint. From a silkscreen base McLean has created a series of infinite beauty and variety exploring the world of the garden. The monotypes range in composition, palette and atmosphere from bold and bright to serene and contemplative. McLeans’ fascination with flora and fauna is inspired by his wife’s gardens in London and Menorca and has been a central theme in his prints and paintings of recent years. In addition to this, two stunning new pieces have been released by Storm Studios; the first is a large format edition of Storm Thorgerson’s 'Chrome' album cover for the band Catherine Wheel (originally created in 1993).

St Aubin Sculptures
Last month the new sculptures at the gateway to St Aubin were officially unveiled in a small ceremony which saw approximately 100 people in attendance. The sculptures designed and crafted by local sculpture Derek Tristram seek to bring together the history of St Aubin's boat building and fishing industries with the new modern and functional St Aubin. Derek was assisted by a young TTS worker Josh who gained an insight into the intricacies of such craftsmanship. Connetable Steve Pallett gave a short speech thanking the villagers for their patience and TTS and Brenwal for their hard work. Newly appointed TTS Minister Eddie Noel spoke about the importance of TTS working with communities on projects and Deputy Kevin Lewis who was TTS Minister for the duration of the project unveiled the artwork.
The second is a new lenticular edition of Storm Thorgerson’s design for The Steve Miller Band’s album 'Bingo' originally created in 2010. Visit both collections of artwork at CCA Galleries International until 31 January 2015.

Enjoying A Christmas Drink? Put Down The Keys And Don’t Drive... Every single year thousands of people are affected by drink drive accidents all over the UK. It is a well known that more drink driving offences happen around the Christmas and New Year period, where most people think that they can get away with it. Either way, the risk simply isn’t worth the trouble. What's the law on drink driving? In the UK, the alcohol limit for drivers is 80 milligrams of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood or 35 micrograms per 100 millilitres of breath. How much can I drink and stay under the limit? There is no fool-proof way of drinking and staying under the limit. The amount of alcohol you would need to drink to be considered over the driving limit varies from person to person. It depends on height, weight, gender, age, tiredness, stress levels, and how much and how recently you have eaten. Even small amounts of alcohol can affect your ability to drive so the only safe advice is to avoid any alcohol if you are driving. How alcohol affects driving Many of the functions that we depend on to drive safely are affected when we drink alcohol: •the brain takes longer to receive messages from the eye •processing information becomes more difficult •instructions to the body's muscles are delayed resulting in slower reaction times.
drink drive limit without even realising. While far fewer people are taking the risk of drink-driving at night, more are getting into their cars in the morning. Many without realising they could still be over the legal limit to drive. Research suggests people are failing Breath tests You can be breath tested at any time of day to understand that just because you’ve been or night, on any day of the year. For example: to sleep, it doesn’t mean you’re no longer af• if you're involved in a collision - whether it fected by alcohol. is your fault or not • if you're attempting to drive a vehicle - this Whether it’s okay to drive the next morning depends on how much you’ve drunk – and might mean you're trying to start a car • if you're in charge of a vehicle - this means if you’ve left enough time for your system to that the driver is in the vehicle even if it's not get rid of the alcohol. If you're convicted of drink driving, your life will change. You will: • have a criminal record • be disqualified from driving - for at least a year • have to pay more for your vehicle insurance, as your premium will increase • have difficulty hiring a car for the next 10 years • need to re-sit your driving test once your disqualification period is over. These things will happen if you're simply caught and convicted for drink driving. If you kill or injure someone while drink driving, the consequences for you will be much worse. things clearly while you are driving. You can’t speed up the process There’s a mixture of mechanisms at work when your body processes alcohol, mainly enzymes in your liver doing their job of breaking down alcohol. This process can take longer if your liver is damaged or not working normally. There’s nothing you can do to speed up the rate alcohol leaves your system. Having a cup of coffee or a cold shower might make you feel better but won’t do anything at all to get rid of the alcohol. As a guide, you can work out the time it takes to sober up by counting units consumed, and, starting from one hour after finishing drinking, adding an hour for each unit. This means that if you drink four pints of 4.5% larger, at 2.6 units each, and finish drinking at 11.00pm, you should avoid driving until at least 10.15am the next morning.
Liberation Group Goes Soft On Drink Drive Campaign www.jerseypages.info
With the festive party season just around the corner, Liberation Group is once again helping to drive the States of Jersey Police’s Christmas message with the launch of its 2014 Soft Drink Drive Campaign The annual road safety awareness campaign offers free soft drinks to designated drivers throughout the month of December in an effort to discourage people from running the risk of harming themselves and others by drinking and driving. Liberation Group is the largest pubs, brewing and drinks business in the Channel Islands and 45 of its pubs, bars and eateries across Jersey are participating in this year’s Soft Drink Drive campaign. Throughout December the designated driver for two or more friends will receive a free non-alcoholic drink with every round of drinks served during their stay. To qualify, they simply need to show their car keys to the staff serving their party.
The States of Jersey Police have welcomed the return of the initiative. Sergeant Paul Smith, Head of the Licensing Support Team, said: ‘We know that the majority of drivers are sensible, and don’t drink and drive. But drinking and driving remains an issue for us over the festive period when a small number of people insist on risking their lives, and the lives of others, by getting behind the wheel of a car when they are not in a fit state. We are grateful to the Liberation Group for once again supporting the work we do by running such a positive campaign.’ The campaign will be heavily
promoted with in-house posters, press adverts and a direct mail out to all members of Inndulgence Club, Liberation Group’s popular loyalty card scheme. Liberation Group’s Chief Executive Officer, Mark Crowther comments, ‘We introduced the Soft Drink Drive campaign several years ago to promote sensible driving over the Christmas and New Year holidays and the initiative has proved extremely successful in discouraging irresponsible driving decisions. In addition to offering free soft drinks to designated drivers, all our staff have the details of lo-
cal taxi firms to help people find safe, alternative ways of getting home at the end of the night. Of course we want our customers to enjoy themselves during the festive season but we want them to do so in a manner that is safe for both themselves and for others. We would like to wish all our customers a happy and safe Christmas and New Year.’ Designated drivers must be aged 18 years or over to claim the free soft drinks which include drinks from both the J2O and Pepsi ranges. The campaign is also running in Liberation Group pubs, bars and eateries across Guernsey. To find out more about the initiative and for a full list of participating outlets, Islanders can visit the Soft Drink Drive dedicated website at www.softdrinkdrive.com

Selling Your Home? Be Prepared... Selling your home? Not having much success? It could just be the state of the market, or the lingering bad luck from when you broke that mirror six and a half years ago. Or actually, come to think of it, it could be the broken light fixtures, weed-choked garden and residual smell of fish from the bouillabaisse you served at last week’s dinner party. Take heed, home sellers - first impressions really do count!
Your buyers don't want to see the lovely life you've made for yourself in your beautiful home. They want to imagine the lovely life they could make for themselves in their beautiful potential new home. Don't allow anything to clutter that vision.

•Get a new shower curtain and bathmat (again, choose neutral shades) •Get rid of that busy wallpaper that you loved five years ago. Remove it and then paint the walls - don’t simply paint over it, as it will be obvious to your buyer and make the wallpaper difficult to remove •Eradicate odours - particularly those from cigarette smoke, mildew and pets. Open the windows and air out your house. Simply masking bad smells with a perfumed air freshener won’t do the trick •Replace cushion covers, bedspreads and curtains that are worn or have garish colours and patterns Let there be light... Lots of natural light usually tops the list of things people are looking for in a home. This is great news if you own a home on a barren cliff top with ceiling-to-floor glass facing the afternoon sun, but that’s not always on the cards, is it? Fortunately, there are other ways to maximise the light in your house - natural or otherwise - and give the impression of having plenty of bright, airy space. •Replace dim light bulbs with higher wattage •Don’t just pull open those heavy, dark curtains - pull them down altogether •In areas of your house that are particularly dark, install some extra light fixtures •Repaint darker rooms with light-coloured and light-reflecting paint •Prune any trees or vines that are casting shadows inside the house
Spring clean... Clean! Clean as though your life depended on it! We're not talking about a quick once-over. Serious attention to detail is necessary here. •Dust the skirting boards (if you don't know what a skirting board is, yours probably really need dusting) •Clean the windows (inside and out!) and then
polish them with newspaper for extra shine •Dust light fixtures and furniture •Vacuum like there's no tomorrow •Get rid of cobwebs •Polish taps and mirrors •Bleach tile grout •Clean out the refrigerator and deodorise it by a) placing an open box of baking soda inside it to soak up odours and b) wiping down the inside surfaces with vanilla extract •Scrub the oven clean - it may sound excessive, but prospective buyers are notoriously nosy and judgmental
Control your pets... No buyer wants to be greeted at the door by your charming King Charles Spaniel. Or any other breed of dog, cat, rabbit, guinea pig and so on. If possible, remove pets altogether when you're showing your property. Ask a friend or family member to take them off your hands for a while, or better yet, take Cujo for a walk yourself. This brings us to our next point. Get out! Presumably your estate agent knows what she's doing and has sold some houses before. Why not leave them to get on with it? No offence, but prospective buyers don't really want you hovering over them while they're trying to nose around in your wardrobe and pass judgment on your crockery. It's a bit off-putting. If they feel awkward, they're much less likely to linger in your home and get the full impact of how great it is and how they'd very much like to buy it.

The Benefits Of Switching To A Walk-in Shower www.jerseypages.info
If you have an old shower fitting and fancy replacing it with something more modern and stylish, then a walk-in shower might be just the thing for you. Whether you have a separate shower enclosure or a combined shower bath, the likelihood of slippy floors and the need to step over awkward ledges and bath-sides can represent something of a challenge if your mobility is restricted.
Thankfully, there is a solution that means your showering days need not be over: the walk-in shower. Walk-in showers are designed to take the risk out of showering, removing the threat of injury or a fall and ensuring as comfortable and safe an experience as it ever was. The walk-in shower is more than just a piece of safety equipment though;
it can be an integral part of a stylish bathroom.
and stay in full working order for a long time.
Flexibility People have differing mobility and bathing needs and so an off-the-shelf walk-in shower enclosure is often not the most suitable answer. A key benefit of a walk-in shower is that a good manufacturer will be able to deliver a custom solution that meets your exact requirements, whether you are looking for a shower tray, wet room or level floor, right or left-hand entry, full or half panels or doors or no doors. The size of your bathroom is not a problem, either.
Easy to clean Traditional showers can be a complete nightmare to clean - there are nooks and crannies that are barely reachable without the flexibility of a contortionist, and the result is that some areas can be left unattended to amass grime and limescale. Walkin showers offer a much bigger and more open space, giving you or a helper a simpler cleaning job.
Durability A popular material used in walk in shower enclosures is ceramic tile, a long-lasting and durable material that can withstand wear and tear and the pressure of constant water for years. Once installed, your walk-in shower should continue to look good
Luxury To the uninitiated, a walk-in shower can bring with it notions of uglylooking hand-rails and functional rather than appealing design. The truth is very different. Today’s walkin showers are elegant and contemporary, available in as many styles as traditional showers and totally complementary to the existing style of your bathroom.
