Having undergone a total makeover the new bamboo Tiki bar is serving a mix of classic drinks, cocktails and of course Rum. A panel of carefully selected judges including Mary Beghin, Leila Begg, Jaime Boylan, Jodie Lee, Fiona Vacher, Mari Font, Michele Horwood, Michelle Smith, John Grimshaw and Emma Jane Griffiths evaluated the performances, and eventually 16 acts were taken through to the grand finals. The finals were held at the Hotel de France at a very glitzy black-tie Charity Ball hosted by ex-Channel 103 radio presenter, Peter Mac. Channel TV presenters Mark McQuillan, Sophia Bird and Rob Jones had the extremely difficult decision of choosing not only a winner in each category, but also the overall winner, 11 year old singer Erin Machin.

Monthly Bingo Night BSJA stands for British Show Jumping Association Jersey Limited and has approximately 250 members.

Throughout the year the BSJA in St.Lawrence will hold around 100 different showjumping competitions and events attracting children on ponies to adults on horses.

We also have competitors and their horses from Guernsey.

The association are in need of funds for new equipment and improving the facilities. Everyone involved works endlessly and voluntarily to ensure that Jersey is able to continue with our very popular sport, Show Jumping, ensuring well run, enjoyable entertainment for competitors, families, owners and spectators.

The facilities include a club house with a bar, there is always catering. If you would like more information regarding the next show which will guarantee a family day out please telephone for details.

To raise funds we get together one Friday in every month at Les Ormes Leisure Village in St.Brelade for a fun evening of BINGO where you can join friends and family for a meal or just a drink and then play a game of BINGO starting at 7.30pm.

You can also reserve your own private table. It is becoming a very popular evening so it is advisable to come early. The cash prizes are certainly worth while playing for and there’s also a raffle. So make a note of the next BINGO date and phone some friends and come along.

Hospitality Programme Launched For Jobseekers

The 2015 Hospitality Programme gives Islanders who have not worked in the industry before the chance to train on the job. It also gives employers the opportunity to recruit and train locally-qualified jobseekers with financial support from Back to Work.

Under the programme, developed through feedback from industry, Back to Work will fund trainees’ wages at minimum wage for up to 8 weeks while they are being trained by their employer. For the employer to receive financial support, the trainee must be a locally-qualified jobseeker who has little or no experience in the industry.

The Social Security Minister, Deputy Susie Pinel, said “We understand that it takes time to train and develop new staff and this new structured approach aims to give employers the freedom to train according to their business needs, and gives jobseekers the skills required to succeed in the industry.

“At the end of the eight weeks it is our hope that the trainees will have gained essential skills, and an understanding of the industry, and the employers will have valued members of staff who are ready for the busy hospitality season.”

Not Your Average Lady That Lunches!

Lucy Sanderson caught up with Caroline Strachan, founder of The Big Gig in the Park.

Jersey is renowned for it’s philanthropic community and as time has gone on, event led fund raising has really made an impact on the island and more importantly, to the charities they support. From Gala Balls to the million Pound Lottery for Jersey Hospice, it’s all about an experience within which we can donate, raise awareness and have fun all at the same time.

One of the said charitable events which, brings thousands of islanders together, is the fabulous family music event, The Big Gig in the Park. Founder and Organiser, Caroline Strachan is gearing up and working on the acts and set up as the 6th installment of the Big Gig is going to be the biggest one yet.

Following the mighty Tom Jones at last year’s double whammy weekend of Big Gig entertainment, 2015’s offering will be with a difference. The Big Gig in the Park has seen the likes of Olly Murs, Lemar, The Wanted, Alexandra Burke, Beverley Knight, Union J and JLS to name a few, grace the stage and perform for upward of 6,000 people at Howard Davis Park over the years – all in aid of local children’s charities.

Introducing a second date on last year’s event, the Legend in the Park, the Big Gig team aimed to give all ages and music lovers a veritable feast of entertainment.

Moving forward into 2015, a 2-day event is indeed, on the cards. Not to say that Big Gig is a festival, Caroline makes it clear that the event is 2 concerts over one weekend with the experience being not dissimilar to one which you might expect in calibre, from a UK based concert, but set within the beautiful, boutique Victorian backdrop of Jersey’s town park at Howard Davis Park…

The Big Gig in the Park is evolving, or growing up (as Caroline puts it). A new website, social media campaign and some support from other local businesses and brands, mean that Big Gig can be exactly what it says it is; BIG. A Big event, with an even bigger heart; The Big Gig in the Park is only one of Caroline’s projects as she heads up the unique ‘conduit’ for other local children’s charities, Helping Jersey Charities Ltd (HJC). Setting up this ‘umbrella’ style non-profit organisation gave Caroline

a nucleus for her philanthropic work. HJC has thus far raised substantial amounts of money for an array of local charities, such as Teenage Cancer Trust, Autism Jersey, CLIC Sargant and of course, Caroline’s media partner’s charity, Channel 103’s Help a Jersey Child.

Prior to setting up HJC some 5 years ago, Caroline worked as a sort of freelance charity events organiser.

Raising a whopping £432,000 in one night for Great Ormand Street Children’s Hospital; Jersey Hospice and other local causes; events such as the Peter Pan Ball, Crystal Ball and Million Pound Lottery, all benefitted from Caroline’s experience, influence and organisation.

Since working in charity events over the last decade, Caroline and her host of supporters, volunteers and sponsors have managed to raise a staggering £2million for charity.

The Big Gig in the Park is something of a new age testament to Caroline’s dream of making fund raising fun. Her love for doing things big is now realised in an event, which has managed to firmly plant its feet under the table of the Jersey social calendar.

Constantly tipping her hat to the valuable team of volunteers and supporters, The Big Gig in the Park has gone from strength to strength thanks to everyone ‘mucking in’, securing support from some big brands.

Caroline and the Big Gig team are now looking to local businesses to get involved, with an array of sponsorship packages available and a variety of exciting CSR campaigns to join in with, Big Gig is certain to present a fantastic opportunity to whomever gets on board.

So Caroline, what can people expect from the even bigger, Big Gig? “The Big Gig started as an idea, it has now become a big deal. It’s all about what we can do to make a big difference. I’m so proud of our last events, so very grateful to everyone who made our idea come to life and of course, I’m so happy when I see a crowd of over 6000 people having a ball at The Big Gig in the Park.

In order to deliver a great event, we are steering Big Gig into another phase. For 2015, we are anticipating a more interactive experience with our new website and social media campaign, as well as some exciting

and fun competitions, give aways and campaigns in the lead up to this year’s event!

The Big Gig 6th edition will feature a few surprises in its lead up, but also at the event itself – I don’t want to give away too much right now, but local artists, creatives and musicians (of course!) will have a role to play. The other point I need to make, is that the headliner will be someone (or a group) of great popularity – in other words, we will be bringing you a world class event.”

So by now most of us have heard about this UK company potentially introducing a new scheme into the Island, Pooprints, which allows uncleared animal mess to be traced back to the owners. Whilst this seems like a good idea may we point out the lack of bins for animal waste. We wouldn’t dream of leaving our dogs waste on the pavement but because of our good morals we are often left carrying a bag of dog poop until we find a bin, which in the past has been for up to 15 minutes. #justSayin’

Student Trips Visit to new London Cruise Terminal In July 2014, a party of Construction Degree students from Highlands College as part of their residential visit to London South Bank University were able to visit the £280 million Enderby Wharf Development located on the River Thames between Greenwich and the O². The development comprises 616 luxury riverside apartments and Central London’s first Cruise Terminal. It is hoped that this visit may be repeated again during the next residential in two years’ time to view the progress of this very exciting development.

Graduation 2014 More than 60 students from Jersey were joined by families and friends in October 2014 as they celebrated the completion of their studies with Plymouth University.

A special graduation ceremony was held at Highlands College on Thursday 2nd October where students marked the successful completion of the foundation and undergraduate level programmes.

There was also an alumni event at the Pomme d’Or Hotel in St Helier the following day, which was attended by former Plymouth University and Highlands College students based on the islands, alongside current staff from both institutions.

Steve Lewis, who was appointed Principal of Highlands College in March 2014, said: “This Graduation Ceremony marks the summation of all the learning our students have experienced during their degree studies. As the new Principal of Highlands College, I am delighted that local people are able to access a University Education in Jersey and that, with our higher education partner Plymouth University; our stu

dents are able to have their achievements recognised by becoming graduates of an institution whose heritage dates back to 1862. In the modern world a degree represents a passport to most professions and the majority of our graduates have experienced the real world of work within Jersey.”

The ceremony saw students graduating in Business, Education and Arts subjects, including four degree level programmes – BA (Hons) Business and Management, BA (Hons) Childhood Studies, BA (Hons) Financial Services and BSc (Hons) Social Sciences.

Museum Super Glues Tutankhamun’s Mask

The burial mask of the world's most famous pharaoh, Tutankhamun, has been glued together after a cleaner accidentally broke it.

The 3,300 year-old mask has been permanently damaged after its blue and gold beard was knocked off while it was on display at the Egyptian Museum in Cairo.

The relic was then hastily stuck together with cheap superglue.

It is not clear when it happened and museum workers have given differing accounts as to how it was damaged, but they all say their co-worker was told to fix it quickly.

One conservator said: "Unfortunately he used a very irreversible material - epoxy has a very high property for attaching and is used on metal or stone but I think it wasn't suitable for an outstanding object like Tutankhamun's golden mask. The mask should have been taken to the conservation lab but they were in a rush to get it displayed quickly again and used this quick drying, irreversible material."

The mask reportedly now shows a gap between the face and the beard. Another museum worker added that once the glue had dried on the face of the mask, a colleague used a spatula to remove it, leaving scratches.

DIY: How To Tile Your Floor 20

The basic principle of laying a tile floor is simple: set out the room, apply the adhesive, lay the tile and cut tiles to fit around the things that are in the way. No matter what kind of tile you use, you will need to do a little prep work.

Preperation You can lay hard tiles directly onto a dry and level concrete floor. But if you have a timber floor, you’ll need to strengthen it first with 13mm-thick exterior grade plywood fixed with countersunk 25mm screws (4mm gauge) or ring-shanked nails, at 300mm intervals.

To clean a concrete floor, it’s best to use detergent mixed with water and if your floor is uneven, you’ll need to level it. You can lay new tiles over old quarry or vinyl tiles as long as they’re securely stuck down, although vinyl tiles should be coated with primer. For the best results, choose a tile adhesive that’s specially formulated for the surface you’re working on particularly if you’re tiling directly onto wood or concrete.

Tiles are sold in packs, and the size and number of tiles these contain determine the area of floor they cover. When you’re working out the area of your floor, remember to include the dimensions of any alcove or bay and round up the total to the nearest whole number to find out the number of packs of tiles you’ll need.

Position the first tile As the first tile (or ‘key’ tile) determines the position of all the others, it’s very important that it’s in the right place. Rooms aren’t often completely square and the walls may not be straight either so you can’t start by laying tiles right up against one wall and working your way out from there, as you’d end up with an untidy mess. The best way to ensure you get an even design is to start from the centre of the-

tile below. Then cut the tile just short of the marked line to allow space either side for the grout and sealant.

room, and work your way out to the walls in each direction.

First, find the centre of your room. Start at one of the centre lines and dry-lay a row of tiles from the line to the wall. When you reach the wall, make sure you’re not left with a narrow gap - a very thin strip of tile at the skirting will look a bit odd and may not stick very well. If you need to, move the line the width of half a tile away from this wall to create a larger gap.

Carry on dry-laying the tiles from this centre line in the opposite direction and then in both directions at right-angles to it.

Squeeze a layer of adhesive onto the back of each cut border tile and place it in position.

From time to time, it’s a good idea to check the tiles are level by using a spirit level. Lay the next row of tiles out from the key tile, working at right angles to the first row. Continue by working in rows in this quarter of the room.

When you’ve finished the first section, you’ll need to repeat the process until all but the cut tiles at the edges are laid. Make sure you wipe the tiles with a damp sponge to remove all the adhesive.

Laying the tiles It’s best to start with the key tile and work your way out towards one of the walls. You can fix the tiles with a standard floor tile adhesive, but do bear in mind that it needs 24 hours to set before you can walk on your newly-laid tiles.

If you use tile spacers, you’ll be able to create even grout lines between your tiles and achieve a professional-looking finish on your floor. The spacers come in different sizes that are suitable for floor and wall tiles. Try to press them well below the surface of the tile so they don’t protrude through the finished grout.

Use a trowel to clean out any adhesive left in the gaps around the walls before it sets. Remember that you’ll need to leave the tiles for 24 hours before cutting and laying the edge tiles at the walls.

Start in the centre of the room and pour out enough adhesive to cover a square metre of floor. Spread it evenly using a notched trowel or spreader (the ribbed pattern leaves just the right amount of adhesive to make the tiles stick). Make sure you can still see enough of the chalk line to position your key tile.

Cutting Tiles Hard floor tiles are thicker than ceramic wall tiles, and to cut them you’ll need a heavy-duty tile cutter. You’ll find large tiles are much easier to cut than smaller ones. If you’re going to use a lever-action flat-bed cutter you’ll need to make a single score line in one go and then snap the tile smartly - if you hesitate, you’ll end up with a disappointing result.

Put the key tile in position, then twist it slightly. This beds it into the adhesive and makes certain there’s no air trapped. Carry on working out towards one of the walls to complete a

How to grout floor tiles If you want your tiled floor to look good, you’ll need to grout it carefully. Start by ensuring there are no lumps by mixing your floor tile grout well with water (it’s a good idea to leave most grouts to stand for a few minutes before you use them). For the edges of the room, it’s best to use a similar-coloured flexible sealant instead of grout.

When the adhesive has set, mix your grout into a paste with water. If you’ve got glazed tiles, just pour the grout over them and spread it with a rubber-edged grout spreader. Or if the surface of your tiles is absorbent, mix a very dry grout and press it into the joints one by one - taking care to keep the tiles as clean as you can to stop them from staining.

When the grout starts to set, press and smooth it into all the joints with a striking tool or a wooden dowel. This compacts it and makes it water-resistant. Clean off any excess grout with a damp sponge as you go along.

Your grout will need an hour to harden. Once it’s hard, wipe it again with a damp cloth and polish the tiles with a dry one. Then seal around the edge of the floor with a matching flexible sealant. Try not to give the floor any heavy use for at least 48 hours after you’ve finished grouting. source - diy.com

The Law Society of Jersey has voted Advocate Simon Hurry, as the winner of its Junior Lawyer of the Year Award.

Advocate Hurryis a senior associate at Jersey Law firm Collas Crill, working in the Dispute Resolution team. He was called to the Bar of England and Wales in 2009 and qualified as a Jersey Advocate in early 2014.

Tips & Advice On Starting A Business Written By Rachel Matthews Start your business while you're still employed* How long can most people live without money? Not long! You may have mortgage commitments, family to support and it may be a while before your new business actually makes any profits. Being employed while you're starting a business means money in your pocket while you're going through the set up process. It may take a while before the money comes in. * You Should notify your employer to ensure there is no conflict of interest.

Get Support You need a support system while you're starting a business (and afterwards).

Being a sole director can be hard, having a family member or friend that you can bounce ideas off and who will listen sympathetically is invaluable. Even better, find a mentor or a current business owner. When you're starting a business experienced guidance is the best support system of all.

Get clients or customers first Don't wait until you've officially started your business to line these up, your business can't survive without them. Do the networking. Make the contacts. Sell or even give away your products or services. You can't start marketing too soon but do choose advertising carfeully, as this will impact your overheads and you need to keep them low as you may have rent and staff to pay.

Write a business plan He who fails to plan plans to fail?

This is your bible and work in progress.

After all if you have no aims and goals then you will fail to remember why you set up in the first place. The main reason for creating a business plan when you're first thinking of starting a business is so that it can help you avoid sinking your time and money into starting a business that will not succeed. Remember, you don't have to work through a full scale business plan for each new business idea you come up with but it does help and is key to a successful business. The other advice would be to work out a simple cash flow forecast i.e income less expenditure to keep you on track and assess how you are progressing with your business.

Do the research and know your market You need to do a lot of research when writing a business plan, but that's just a start. When you're starting a business, you need to become an expert on your industry, products and services. Joining related industry or professional associations before you start your business is a great idea. Also always ensure your charge out rate and /or products are pitched at the right market rates.

Get professional help On the other hand, just because you're starting a business, doesn't mean you have to be an expert on everything. If you're not an accountant or bookkeeper,

hire one (or both). If you need to write up a contract, and you're not a lawyer, appoint one. You will waste more time and possibly money in the long run trying to do things yourself that you are not qualified to do.

Get your Finances right Save up if you have to. Approach potential investors and lenders. Don't expect to start a business and then walk into a bank and get money. Traditional lenders don't like new ideas and don't like businesses without proven track records.

They require at least 3 year’s trading history and accounts before they even consider lending business loans or overdrafts.

Be professional from the start Everything about you and the way you do business needs to let people know that you are a professional running a serious business. That means professional business cards, a business phone and a business email address, and treating people in a professional, courteous manner at all times, relationships are key and people never forget!

business and operate accordingly. Forge good relationships with Social Security and the Taxes office after all they are not scary, they are there to help.

Keep overheads low Remember when you set up a business it is easy to spend money and harder to make it! Keep your overheads low in the first couple of years until you are established. Work from home if your business permits, look for advertising that will get you the most for your money (editorials can be cheaper than adverts) keep staff to a minimum, shop around for deals. Speak to your Bank as local branches sometimes offer 1 year’s free business banking i.e no charges for a year which can be a blessing to a small business as every little helps !!

Lastly - Enjoy You're going to devote a lot of time and energy to starting a business and building it , so it's really important that you truly enjoy what you do, as there will be times when you ask yourself ‘ what am I doing?’ ‘ Is it worth it? ‘. 2015: Mystic Meg and Recruiting Trends.

Candidates, It’s For You Not Just About you!

Many of you will remember Mystic Meg’s weekly appearance on the Saturday night National Lottery show. For those of you that don’t let’s just say that Mystic Meg is a medium who would avidly predict (by using anything from hair colour to the region lived in) the lucky weekly lottery winner.

I remember as a child sitting with my parents and eagerly awaiting the Mystic Meg ‘prediction’. It didn’t occur to me at that young and impressionable age there was a very mathematical and statistical probability that the prediction would ‘come true’ or indeed that of the millions of people that bought a ticket each week several thousand if not more would be wearing ‘red socks’ on the night of the draw and that this could be ‘predicted’. Alas I was thrilled when Mystic Meg got it ‘right’ (yet there are still some I cannot explain away with statistics) so I eagerly awaited the night she would describe our Jersey family in her prediction. She didn’t.

Predictions are part of everyday life, albeit they are backed up by a little more than Nostradamus’ insight or Mystic Meg’s vision and use an array of global information, statistics and previous trends to give us an insight to what the next day, year, ten, fifty or hundred years will bring from Stock Market prediction to Global Warming and one we are all ardently interested in Economic Growth.

I found hundreds of articles that focused on the consultant area or the client area with very little for the candidate, they are about you, but not for you. So let me take a look at 2015 for the candidate, just what will the year bring to the recruiting table and how can you use it?

Social Media This is an easy one and should be common place by now, however if social media use in recruitment has been steadily growing over the last four years it is set to explode in 2015. A massive 4/5ths of professionals are already regularly using LinkedIn which acts as a shared Global database if you are part of the 1/5th you’re missing out on a massive slice of action. In the US LinkedIn sits at the top in sources used for quality new hires a massive 46%! If you’re not an active LinkedIn user, become one, if you are, have you updated your profile to reflect your current skill set? Gained endorsements and testimonials? All of these contribute to your professional image in turn making you a more sought after employee.

Timing Still I have candidates asking me if now really is the best time to make a career move, in the several articles I researched on this matter there was a host of information on why employers need to act now but little on why now is the right time for the candidate.

Here’s why.

What does all this mean?

This means, if we play our cards right, 2015 will be the best year we’ve seen in the recruitment world for several. Candidates, there is a talent shortage meaning you will have more choice, higher value will be placed on your skill set and with the two biggest barriers to a company’s recruitment strategy (when sourcing top talent) being competition and compensation (something we are already seeing signs of) professionals find themselves in a good position when looking for an opportunity that will tick several more of their boxes. Companies are ready to show new employees how valuable they are, great opportunities are on offer with competitive salaries and employers are more flexible and accessible when it comes to negotiating anything from progression plans, to working hours. Many candidates have seen this coming, engaged recruiters and are using the market to land themselves a career within firms that can offer a dynamic, supportive and progressive environment.

Graduates! Don’t despair!

This year graduates will be entering the market during a predicted 10 year high for graduate jobs, this year presents a third consecutive increase in Graduate employment, proving the

aforementioned talent shortage has been identified and steps are being taken to fill the gap. Graduate recruitment is expected to expand 8% on last year with employers looking for top quality in their hires, so if you are graduating in the next three years, use your university breaks to gain some valuable experience in top tier financial firms and aim for a 1st / 2:1, this will ensure your pick of jobs when you Graduate.

What Now? With 75% of the talent pool still passive it suggests potential candidates are stuck in a rut. 2015 is going to be your year, get on LinkedIn, find a recruiter that’s worthy of your skill set and go and see what’s out there, you don’t know what you’re missing if you never take the shot!
