Swimarathon Raises More Than £133,000 For Local Charities

News In Brief Les Amis Turns 40 A Jersey charity for islanders with learning disabilities has celebrated its 40th birthday. It opened at Five Oaks in 1975.

Islanders have once again excelled in their support for Jersey’s longest running charity event, and helped raise the sum of £133,087 at the 2015 Lions Club of Jersey Swimarathon, sponsored by RBC Wealth Management.

It now supports 80 islanders to live independent lives in 30 houses and flats across Jersey, as well as offering a respite service.

John Le Maistre, President of the Lions Club of Jersey, said: ‘We are delighted by the generosity and support shown towards this year’s Swimarathon and the unstinting efforts of everyone who took part or donated money. It is wonderfully fitting that an event which encourages participation from all corners of our community will help, amongst other projects, local charities that offer new and diverse activities to people with disabilities.’

The funds raised will be divided among specific causes, with 25% of the money raised going to charities supporting people with disabilities, 50% will provide respite holidays and support general community service projects and the remaining 25% will be donated to Channel Islands Air Search, a charity with whom the Lions Club of Jersey and Guernsey has always been closely associated. Award For Doctor Dr Kirstie Ross has been presented with the Police Chief Officer’s Commendation for her ‘significant personal courage’ during an incident last year. Dr Kirstie Ross was praised for helping save a suicidal man’s life. Dr Ross works in the Emergency Department at the General Hospital. She took a call from a distressed man saying he intended to take his own life, and worked with the Police to intervene and stop him.

Kerbside Recycling Kerbside recycling to be implemented in St Brelade after parishioners voted through the scheme at a public meeting last month. More than 50 islanders were at Communicare to hear more details about the proposal. They then passed the plans by 39 votes to 7. It means the parish - which has more than 10,500 residents - will be the sixth to introduce kerbside recycling, following its introduction in St John, Trinity, St Lawrence, St Mary and St Helier. Survey Reveals That The Desire To Buy Local Is Increasing More and more of us want to buy products made and grown in Jersey, according to a new survey.

Rakuten who bought Play.com in 2011 still use the branding but this will soon be coming to an end. The company which grew from a three man operation above a sports shop in town into a multi-million pound enterprise and was eventually sold for £25million, will soon simply forward you to another website.

A Rakuten spokesperson has confirmed that Play.com will soon disappear, “Rakuten will cease using the Play.com, from which point visitors to the website will be forwarded automatically to the new Rakuten.co.uk marketplace.”

Can you tell us about your background in the beauty industry? I have been in the beauty industry for 9 years now. As soon as I finished school i went straight up to highlands to do my NVQ level 2 and 3. I have wanted to work as a beauty therapist since I was a little girl. After college I went to Stiener training academy in London before working on a cruise ship. Since then i have been working in various salons and nail bars on the island.

Working on the cruise ship I was a massage therapist and when you are massaging 8 clients a day for 7 months you do pick up 'a nack' for

Lucy Sanderson caught up with event organiser Paul Shoer Paul, you’re a known face on the local scene but this is your first event - what can people expect from a ‘Fierce Angel’ night?

Yes this is the first event I’ve promoted by myself, but not my first time promoting an event. I consider myself very fortunate to have amassed a wealth of experience from my years as part of the Pure management and promotion team. Keith Robinson, and myself worked alongside the owner of Pure (and champion of Jerseys dance scene), Martin Hodson under the guide of *boogaloo.

Since the departure of Pure, Rojo has taken up the mantle and launched the dance scene into the next level with phenomenal acts like Blond & Young Disciples, while still supporting tried and tested nights like Philosophy of House & Reminisce.

Through this partnership we hosted some of the greatest legends in the dance scene - Ant Brooks, Solarstone, Brandon Block, Funkagenda, The Stafford Brothers, Reza, Mark Doyle (Fierce Angel), Mark Wilkinson, Soul Avengers, Agnelli & Nelson, Graham Gold, Kim Fai & many many more We also worked closely with a number

There are lots of great ideas for future events in the pipeline but I don’t want to give too much away at this stage, lets just make the first one the best it is and then look to the next.

Tell us a bit about the music… A Fierce Angel night features only the finest fiercest house music. The sound of Fierce Angel caters to everyone’s taste, quite simply its pure vocal house anthems, the type of music that calls you to the dance floor and has you dancing and singing all night long. Mark Doyle is one of the founders and creators of Hed Kandi, right? Mark was solely responsible for the creation of Hed Kandi while working for Jazzfm. He presented the radio show, compiled the albums, planned the marketing and art directed the covers. Mark’s last compilation for Hed Kandi was HEDK049 Beach House. He left Hed Kandi in June 2005 to set up his own completely independent record label. In May 2006 Mark launched Fierce Angel Records & Fierce Angel Events. Instead

of taking on any investors Mark remortgaged his house and launched the new label as a completely self-funded project. I’ve always admired Mark’s tenacity and resilience; his experiences have never dampened his spirit or enthusiasm, he is definitely one of the most upbeat and positive people I know and this shines through his music and dj sets. Fierce Angel releases so far include over 30 compilations - Beach Angel, Tokyo Disco, Es Vive, Fierce Angel, Angels Fall, Fierce Disco, Digital Angel and The Collection, alongside 25 artist EP’s and the syndicated radio show is broadcast to over 20 countries. Mark Says “It’s been an amazing ride so far and the bumps in the road have only made us stronger. I’m so pleased to have all our Fierce Team on board for the next exciting chapter in the story of Fierce Angel and would like the thank everyone for all their support over the last 25 years.”

Do You Have Patio So it’s that time of year again, the sun is shining and the garden is in need of some TLC. The grime, moss & weeds have gone, but wait….What are those black spots all over the stones? That’s what’s known as lichen. You’ve probably tried scrubbing the stones with hot soapy water, or maybe even bleach, but they just won’t budge! Lichen is a tough little bugger and likes nothing more than to reside on your lovely driveway, patio, brickwork etc.. In fact it isn’t overly fussed where it lays it’s roots. It is quite partial to sandstone but it will appear pretty much anywhere. It’s a type of airborne spore which blows in off trees and leaves, settles on your stones and then spreads. It digs itself deep into the stone with root like structure and is extremely hard to remove. Your average DIY pressure washer won’t even tackle it! Interest(ing) Rates... “There are approximately one million ways to disguise these rates and other charges” The world of credit is an old and murky one. Particularly in Jersey where borrowers are far less protected than our friends on the mainland. As long ago as 1974, and only after 12 years of drafting and reviewing, the UK introduced the Consumer Credit Act which was established primarily to protect innocent purchasers and those using Hire Purchase and Loans for example. We used to refer to these credit plans as “Paying On the Drip” but today these facilities sound so much more sophisticated, desirable and trustworthy – they are in fact the same as they ever were whether it is a credit card, a mortgage, an overdraft, a payday loan or a Hire Purchase Agreement for a fancy fridge…its all the same. You are being lent money at a cost and when that cost is compared to the amount borrowed and the period of time for which it is borrowed - you get an interest rate. There are approximately one million ways to disguise these rates and

other charges like ‘administration fees’ and ‘option to purchase fees’ and I am sure you’ve heard about most of them. Certainly credit customers need protection, absolutely no doubt, and the focus in 1974 was on key areas of concern like merchantable quality, cooling off periods, repossession rules and where and how a finance company could sign up a customer. During 12 years of deliberation they thought of almost everything leaving out only the interest rates applied by the various lenders. What the Act does require is for lenders to publish their rates and to express them as an APR (Annualised Percentage Rate). Unfortunately for the lenders, when they offer something really quite reasonable for example: to lend someone £100 for only a few weeks and expect £110 back (seems fair to me) the APR works out at something in excess of 1000% …and that seems outrageous. Nonetheless you will see these seemingly massive rates published at the foot of your TV

Christian has an immense amount of experience having been a sushi chef for 13 years! We have loved watching Bento blossom in to something so great, well-known and loved in Jersey. We have a diversity of nationalities in our kitchen, and the cross culture of the chefs brings unique skills and ideas to the table, mixing that experience with our Japanese style food to create a tasty and unique eatery.

First Impressions Count People buy people. Whatever you do, people will buy your product or service and do business with you because they like you, trust you and know you are going to do what is right for them. Did you know that people make an assumption about you within seven seconds of meeting you; that’s a very short time to decide whether they are going to like you or not. Apparently, it then takes 23 subsequent meetings to change a person’s mind about you. First impressions are based on non-verbal communications according to a study done by ULCA: • 55% of people base their first impression on body language and personal appearance: the visual. • 38% of people base their first impression on what you say: the vocal. • 7% of people base their first impression on the words you use: the vocabulary. You need to make a positive impact and in order to do so that first impression is crucial. If, when you go shopping, the display window is the first thing you see and it gives a good impression then you will likely go in, but, if you don’t like what you see you will most likely walk past and never even bother entering the store. Your clothing says a lot about whom

you are and what you stand for: so dress to impress. When heading out to a networking event, make sure you know what the dress code is so you are not over or underdressed. I remember last year’s CIM award dinner; there was a very unusual dress code, which was called “lounge” dress code. It really confused everyone; a few men were actually wearing black tie when everyone else was wearing casual clothing. These men stood out, did not look very comfortable at all and actually appeared a little awkward.

A couple of months ago at The Busy Queen Bee Speed Buzzing events, one of the attendees introduced himself and shook everyone’s hands with his business card hidden in his palm. It was such an unusual start to a conversation, that people actually remembered him from this simple, but also effective introduction. Admittedly, they forgot his name, but they remembered him from his trick. Being of French origin, it is in our culture to kiss everybody, so I am not afraid to kiss the people I know, however when you don’t know people make that handshake a strong and confident one. No one wants a wet, shaky hand to be his or her first physical contact with a person. You need to assert the already great first impression you have worked so hard to make. Finally, ensure you create a positive impact; dress to impress, learn powerful stances, shake hands with confidence and make your first seven seconds impression counts.

Digital Due-Diligence Platforms Explored At Jersey Finance Debate Jersey’s ambitions to position itself as a leading FinTech jurisdiction and how digital innovation could assist Jersey’s finance industry with growing due diligence obligations formed the focus of an event hosted by Jersey Finance recently. At a sell-out event at the Pomme D’Or Hotel last month, a panel of experts discussed the potential benefits as well as the risks of adopting innovative technological platforms to provide financial services firms with ‘Know Your Customer’ (KYC) and Anti-Money Laundering (AML) solutions. The panel, which included Andrew Le

Brun, Jersey Financial Services Commission, Helen Hatton, Sator Regulatory Consulting Limited, and William Grace, Carey Olsen and which was moderated by Hamish Ramsay, Standard Bank, also examined the implications for the regulator of a greater reliance on technology. In exploring just how resource-heavy KYC and AML processes are globally for firms in an age of ever-increasing regulation, the panel also considered whether digital solutions have the potential to increase operational efficiencies and improve client satisfaction, by expediting the on-boarding process and making the provision of KYC information more accessible for many.

In addition, during a series of presentations, three Jersey-based providers of KYC and AML services (KYCme, KYC World Wide and Elian) and one overseas provider (ID checker) provided elevator pitches of their products to highlight to attendees the variety of solutions currently being brought to the market.
