Jersey Reef Wildlife Disturbance Sparks Boat User Warning

Birds’ nests have been deliberately destroyed and seals and dolphins disturbed around the offshore reefs. . Visitors from boats have also built bonﬁres and cleared vegetation on Les Minquiers - a group of islands and rocks to the south of Jersey. The States is urging boat owners and visitors to respect Jersey’s wildlife laws and the “fragile environment”. Dozens of people from France and Jersey visit the reefs each summer. The States said that between March and August the main islands were home to nesting seabirds and it was an offence to disturb them.

550 Mile Walk To Help Raise Funds For 2 Local Charities

Sacha Goodwin, a teacher at Beaulieu Convent School, is planning to complete the ‘Santiago de Compostela’ pilgrimage trail in Spain to raise funds for Jersey Hospice Care and MS Jersey. We caught up with Sacha who told us a little more about her venture and the reasons behind it. My first awareness of the pilgrimage was through a friend, It sparked my interest and I then went on to read a book on the topic, coincidently written by my favourite author ‘Paulo Coelho’ and entitled ‘’The Pilgrimage’’. His books are very spiritual and always come to me when I am in need of them. After talking to one of my closest friends, Andy, he informed me that his mother had completed the walk, his Mother being Maggie, the person I have named my pilgrimage walk after this year. It was Maggie that first inspired me to go out and do the walk In August 2010 she said it would be one of the best things I would ever do and she was right! I completed the pilgrimage for the first time that year and to this day have not looked back. The pilgrimage is the Camino de Santiago which is also know in English as the Road of St James, the traditional route starts at the foot hills of the Pyrenees in a small town called SaintJean-Pied-de-Port you then follow the path up and over into Northern Spain and continue a further 480 miles to the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela. It is an amazing experience and one I believe everyone should do at least once. I’m not going to lie, it’s not easy, you walk at least 17 miles or more everyday for about 5 weeks. Your up and walking at 5:30am hoping to get to the next destination before the mid day sun hits you. It will push you past the point of breaking but it’s in those challenging times that you really learn a lot about yourself, and your feet! You can’t avoid having some kind spiritual experience on this walk the people you meet, the roads you take, the breath taking views and most importantly the time to be by yourself. Walking for me is my form of mediation I’m a bit of a dawdle, I like to think its because I’m creative I like to really absorb my surroundings taking in the beauty of the changing light over the landscape the specs of light coming through the canopy of the trees, of course I have to photograph everything on my journey resulting in a catalogue of over 1000 photos last time. So why do it again you might ask? Because I’m crazy? You might be thinking and yes apart of me would have to agree, but 5 years ago I took a bus from Santiago to Finisterre to visit the lighthouse where some pilgrims walk to and burn all of their belongings, although your not allowed to do this any more Finisterre means “end of the world’. I promised myself that I would come back and walk the whole distance and do so for charity, just before last summer I was getting itchy feet and felt the need to challenge myself again, you see I’m a bit of a worrier and part time philosopher which is not always a good mix so I knew I was in need of some time to get away and find my feet back on the road of St James. At the same time I was thinking of my best friend Andy and his Mother Maggie who had lost her fight with cancer after only 5 painful months, her loss was a great shock to us all. Maggie was an amazing beautiful being, always full of life and a true free spirit. One of the last conversations I had with Maggie was about how much she really wanted to go back and complete the walk one more time, which sadly she never did.

So this year I have dedicated it to Maggie, once again she has become my inspiration, reminding us all that life is too short and you never know when your time is up so don’t sit there thinking about it, go out and do it! My charity walk has been named ‘Maggie Ways’. I asked Andy which charity he would like me to raise money for and he chose Hospice Care who took such wonderful care of Maggie in her last days. I had already chosen one charity, Multiple Sclerosis Society Jersey following a friends diagnosis of early stage MS before the age of 30. So that’s how my two chosen charity’s come about and why I’ve called it Maggies Way. So just Me, Myself and my backpack will be leaving Jersey on 13th July to start the walk the next day in the small town of Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port I will continue walking for 37 days until I reach Finisterre, you can follow my training and support me on Facebook and if you would like to sponsor me you can choose which charity you would like your sponsorship to go to by going to the web address below. Jersey Public Sector Pay Freeze A pay freeze for public sector staff has been announced by the States of Jersey. The one-year settlement, discussed with unions, excludes nurses and midwives. The freeze follows the announcement of job cuts and charges for services to tackle a predicted £125m shortfall. Unions said they were “deeply disappointed” by the announcement. The States said the freeze would “minimise redundancies”.

15,000 Tonnes Of Flyash Shipped To UK The last of the stored ﬂy ash from Jersey’s incinerator has been shipped off the island. 15 thousand tonnes - that was being stored in pits at La Collette- had been taken to the UK. It’s taken nine months. From now on TTS will export the ash weekly as it’s generated.

Jersey Cows ‘May Be Beef Source’ In India’s Maharashtra State Jersey cows have been suggested as an alternative to India’s locally-bred cattle as a food source for Muslims.

But, the Indian government said every cow was sacred whatever its breed.

It comes after new laws banning the killing of cattle and sale and consumption of beef were introduced in Maharashtra state last month.

Hindus, who comprise 80% of India’s 1.2 billion strong population, revere cows and as a result, the sale and consumption of beef is banned or restricted in many of the country’s states.

According to reports, the All India Milli Council, which represents Muslims, suggested the Channel Island dairy cow could be an alternative.

The change in law in the western state of Maharashtra, which includes India’s commercial capital and largest city Mumbai, has already led to prosecutions.

Big Ben’s Fitness Club Rebecca’s Story Before: 19 stone and a size 22 Now: Heading towards 15 stone and a size 16! I have tried all the fad diets going from the Cabbage Soup Diet to Herbal Life and the old faithful Weight Watchers, but none have worked or kept me motivated enough to continue.

One of the reasons for me starting with Ben was that I was going to travel to New York on my first long haul flight and I wanted to fit my arse in an economy seat! Also, my dad had been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and my aunt had a massive heart attack 6 months before I started, which resulted in her having a quintuple heart bypass. I was worrying the strain my excess weight was putting on my heart and other organs, so I decided it was now or never! I had been following Ben on Facebook for about 6 months before seeing the offer for 8 weeks of slim club for £50.00, I thought this is my chance, so I took it and have never looked back. Ben and slim club have helped me achieve something that I never thought possible.

When I walked in to my first slim club class I was so nervous and self-conscious but within minutes of listening to Ben he put me at ease, he made what he was saying interesting and fun, looking back now a lot of the stuff he said made perfect sense about the hidden salt and sugars in processed products i.e. coke - 9 tablespoons of sugar per can! There is now no coke in my house anymore! After a few weeks of starting at slim club, Ben suggested some PT sessions with him and that scared me. I was 19st and so unfit, but that session showed me how much I really needed this life style change and that is what it has become, a completely life changing experience that I would not swap for the world. It has made me into the person that I am today, it has given me so much more confidence and helped me believe in myself more.

It is still an ongoing process but I am determined to continue. There are also other new opportunities that have arisen since meeting Ben, becoming a member of slim club, now fit club and soon Ben’s new adventure in Spain! I had mentioned to Ben that I had previously trained as a chef. He said he could use some help with the food side of the class, I was a bit unsure as I was a pastry chef so was more into baking (hence the size of me, I like sweet things ). I thought go for it! We started to do a healthy meal for slim club at our Wednesday class and I would explain about the ingredients that went into it, how to make it and also the benefits of home cooked meals rather than going to the local supermarket and picking up a ready meal !!! It has been going well, everyone seems to enjoy it, although I still struggle to stand up in front of them at times. It has been enjoyable for me as well. Ben has recently asked me to help with his menu ideas for the retreat in Spain. We are going to make balanced meals and snacks that are healthy, tasty and take advantage of the great fresh produce that the Mediterranean has to offer. I can’t wait!

A Nice Place To Take A Stroll?

The incident happened when Bojan Zoric , co-pilot of a cooperate jet was wiping spilt coffee from the flat console between the crew’s seats. He bumped the lever that commands the leading-edge slats, surfaces that are normally extended only to increase lift in slow flight in the take-off or landing phase. This jolted the aircraft to sharply downwards and the automatic pilot dis-connected as the aircraft entered what amounted to an emergency descent.

I enjoy taking my dog for a walk along the piers at Castle Quay area and even though there are some lovely views down there, especially when the sun is going down, the are some ugly views too!

Well last week I knocked a cup of tea over my girlfriends laptop which is now broken, perhaps this will help her forgive me. Everybody makes mistakes I guess! #JustSayin’

A Makeover for Chimes We caught up with Paul Crick from Chimes.

How did you end up at Chimes? I had never planned on running a pub before but a gentleman was going to take it on before we did and my wife was going to be bar manager. That fell through so I decided to apply for the license instead as she had her heart set on working here. And now here we are… Chimes has already had a makeover and I believe you are going through a name change too, is this true and if so what brought this on? Yes it’s true, we are going to be re-branding and returning to the original name, The Parade. We just fancy a change and think it is a good idea to move on from Chimes now. Does Chimes have live music and if so when is it on? We have live music every Saturday night from 8pm, we normally have someone playing the guitar and a singer, it changes every week. Is there any other form of entertainment you have on for the customers? We have Karaoke every Friday and Sunday night which is very popular, we also have quiz nights on Thursday nights. On Thursday nights and Sundays afternoons from 1pm we offer complimentary cheese boards. Do you show any sports? We have commercial Sky Sports which shows rugby, Formula One and football amongst other sports. If there is something on you want to watch, just ask and we’ll put it on for you. Sometimes we’ll have two football matches on at the same time to please everybody. Is there any food served at Chimes? No there is not at the moment. We should be serving food very soon though, as we are just waiting on the parking spaces in front of the pub to be removed so there will be more seating options outside. What are Sankshuns? “So it’s like the ‘naughty step’ for Prime Ministers? ...Yep”

I was once asked by a 6 year old “What’s Sankshuns?” I explained rather carelessly that when the bosses of countries do bad things like steal land or treat people badly, other countries stop working with them and sometimes even keep their money so they can’t use it. The idea is to punish the bosses to try and get them to behave. “So it’s like the ‘naughty step’ for Prime Ministers?” the youngster oﬀered. After a brief unproductive pause for thought, “Yep”, I said… Well perhaps this is a good analogy because it is indeed a behavioural change that is being sought through the imposition of sanctions. So what are they and who decides who gets punished and to what extent?

Sanctions would typically involve the freezing of assets belonging to a government, its officials and or their families and associates, the withdrawal of certain services like finance and travel but usually the most punishing is the restriction of trade, embargoes on import and exports of raw materials and equipment. It is commonly the restriction of trade which impacts the most because often everyone is affected. There are several authorities from across the globe who apply sanctions but for us in Jersey the sources are primarily the Security Council of the United Nations, the European Union and the Office of Foreign Assets Control in the US. Interestingly, just because these authorities apply a sanction does not mean that it is automatically enforced in Jersey. We have to raise a separate piece of legislation (an Order) to adopt the sanctions applied and they are then listed on the websites of the Jersey Financial Services Commission and States Greffe and published in the local gazette from time to time.

to worry about sanctions imposed by the European Union on another country or group of individuals? Well let’s take for example Russia, since it is a current situation in the news today. Simply put, sanctions have been imposed upon Russia to try and encourage its leaders to change their approach concerning the territories in Southern Ukraine which they appear to have ‘annexed’. (To you and me this means ‘invaded by force’ and many people have been killed and made homeless as a result). In August last year we applied the relevant sanctions and the following statement was published locally: “Jersey has brought into force restrictive measures against Russian individuals and businesses that have been identified by the European Union as responsible for actions that undermine or threaten the territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence of Ukraine. A wider EU package of sanctions against Russia has also been enforced in Jersey, including services relating to certain securities and money-market instruments.”

Sanctions are imposed on individuals or entire countries (and often both at the same time) in an attempt to achieve a certain outcome like a change in the conduct of a country’s regime, the restoration of peace or the prevention or suppression of the financing of terrorism for example. and the wider Commonwealth of Independent States (Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan etc) is coordinated through banks and other financial services companies in Jersey. Where the sanctions apply, Jersey individuals and companies are required and expected to conform and ensure we all enforce the same impositions, restrictions and punitive measures. We are all bound by law to adhere to these rules and to breach a sanction is a criminal offence which carries a fine or imprisonment. You may have heard the discussions about “beneficial ownership” and this is another reason why we must always know exactly who we are dealing with, every time, no exceptions. (Something you might have thought we would want to do anyway?)

Spotlight Interview With... ...Tom Kyle from Andium Engineering My name is Tom Kyle and I have lived in Jersey since 1975. I am a Professional Engineer registered with the Engineering Council as an Incorporated Engineer. For over 22 years I was employed by the largest Inspection and Testing Company in the UK, as an Engineer Surveyor carrying out Competent Person inspections and testing for clients mainly in the Channel Islands (CI). As of the 1st September 2014 I left to start my own company Andium Engineering Inspection Services (CI) Ltd., trading as Andium Engineering (AE). We are the first and only local independent Inspection and Testing Company in the CI. Why leave a large company after 22 years to start on your own? I decided to go on my own as I was finding it increasingly difficult to provide an acceptable service level to my clients, to which I myself would expect from any company. Large corporate companies servicing not only the

C.I. but also the UK seem to have lost this ability to provide the correct resources to enable them to service their clients and ensure their inspections are not overdue. What action is required for equipment that is overdue an inspection? The equipment should be taken out of service until a satisfactory inspection is completed by a competent person. How will Andium Engineering Services differ from others? We will be supplying the same services as present suppliers operating in the C.I. but our first priority is quality of service to our clients and ensuring their compliance with relevant legislation. We are at present the only company operating in the C.I. who will guarantee inspections are carried out on time. We are competitive on price and can better any renewal quotation, as a local company we want to pass savings back to the client.

What if my Insurance Broker arranges or advises me on my Engineering Inspections? Andium Engineering are not an Insurance company. Although we prefer our services to be arranged through your local CI Broker. If you require advice on your inspection program you can contact AE direct, if you need advice on insurance covers you need to speak to your Broker who is regulated by Financial Services in the CI. Most engineering insurance requirements can be set up in isolation to your Inspection Program. Are Inspections an Insurance requirement? The majority of inspections are legally required under the relevant ‘Health and Safety at Work’ legislation applicable in the CI. Although we are not part

of the UK and UK legislation does not apply in the Islands, reference to UK standards may be used to illustrate best practice during legal proceedings under Health and Safety at Work legislation if there is no local equivalent. For further advice on the legal requirements contact the relevant ‘Health and Safety Inspectorate’ in Jersey or Guernsey. Further advice can also be obtained from local ‘H&S’ Practitioners or your local Insurance Broker. Finally for free no obligation advice on your Inspection requirements in the CI contact AE. What types of equipment are inspected by AE? The local Health and Safety at Work legislation places duties on all those involved with work activities. This extends to

ensuring all plant and equipment is well maintained, inspected and tested as necessary, to ensure it remains in a safe condition. AE can assist you with this by inspecting a wide range of equipment including pressure equipment such as steam or hot water boilers, compressed air plant, autoclaves or any mechanical plant. Lifting equipment such as cranes, BMU’s, fork lift trucks, excavators, MEWP’s, passenger lifts, escalators to fixed wiring and LEV plant. Walk The Walk & Talk The Talk “Networking is lot like the process of pollination; a small action in one place has a ripple effect...” Have you ever attended a networking event and struggled to network? Was this because you sought out the one person you knew and instead of working the room you spoke to this person for the duration of the event? Well, we’ve all done it. I remember going to my first Institute of Directors lunch; I went to the toilet, put on some lipstick, took a deep breath and told myself “come on Claire, you can do it”, held my head up high and off I went. Walking through the bar and a room full of men, you’d think I would have been in my element. But I wasn’t. I was so self-conscious and in those days not at all confident enough to talk to anyone I didn’t already know; it was a challenge for sure. Following a recent poll by ComRes, a leading research consultancy specialising in corporation reputation, public policy and communications, for the British Library showed that 62% of British adults surveyed had never attended a networking event. The study also found, that of those that did network 51% felt uncomfortable doing so. So here are a few tips to help you feel more confident when attending a networking event: “Bee” prepared. Find the venue and arrive in plenty of time. If the attendees’ list is available, check

out who is coming. Only 23% of those surveyed by ComRes said they had researched who would be attending an event they had signed up for. Know what it is that you want to achieve from the event by setting goals. Concentrate on using your precious time to make useful connections and build new relationships. “Bee” a connector. By asking the organiser for introductions to new people who you ought to meet there you will make valuable use of your time. Then you can become the connector and an introducer and help others develop their network too – as a result opportunities will often follow. “Bee” remembered. Use a core statement to introduce yourself. You have seven seconds for someone to make an impression of you; this is your time to shine. Make sure what you say and how you say it is going to grab this person’s attention. Start with a strong handshake, maintain eye contact and smile as you greet your new contact. “Bee” aware of body language. It’s important to, not only be aware of your own body language, but also that of others around you. Observe the room for a few seconds and look for people who are most likely to respond positively. These are individuals standing alone who are

waiting for someone to talk to or small groups of between two and three people that are clearly open to new participants. You can see this in their body language: if they are facing outward, the chances are that they are having a casual conversation and would be happy for others to join in. However, if their arms are folded in front of their bodies and they are looking at the floor, then they are less likely to want others to join in on their conversation. Similarly, If you are stood on your own and doing the same – or staring down at your mobile phone and not engaging people through eye contact - this will have the same effect. In contrast, leaving your arms unfolded and maintaining good eye contact will welcome people to your space, or conversation if you are already part of a small crowd.

“Bee” interesting. Don’t feel like you have to say something profound to start with. First, you need to break the ice and it can be as simple as commenting on the venue, the programme, food, speaker or the event organiser. Make sure you use plenty of open questions - these are questions that ask who, what, where, when and how – questions that cannot generally be answered with a simple yes or no (closed questions). Your goal is to explore ideas and opinions and also to demonstrate your listening skills. “Bee” there for your new contacts. Follow up and do so promptly, or risk losing all of your hard work. It is a key way to make sure your networking makes a difference in the long run and that you are building a trustworthy relationship.

Business News In Brief Jersey International Finance Centre Building Approved The Planning Applications Committee at the States of Jersey has approved a planning application for Building 5, an office block to be built as part of the Esplanade Quarter, otherwise known as the Jersey International Finance Centre. The application, submitted by the Jersey Development Company, is to construct a six-storey office building on the south-east corner of the existing Esplanade car park. The detached block will provide 69,000 square feet of Grade A office accommodation and a 51-space basement car park. The current carpark will be moved to the other side of La Route de la Liberation.

I Just Don’t Like You, And Other Reasons For Rejection “In a series of 15 minute interviews; the interviewers ‘decision’ time was just less than 4 minutes” It feels like eons ago that I completed my Diploma in Recruitment Practise, (in fact it is little over 8 years ago), having only been in the industry for a year at the time I still to this day believe it gave me a great grounding in the recruitment world and a topic I became hugely interested in was the psychological aspect of recruitment and selection, probably in large part thanks to my fascination with psychology as a topic and the tutor I had at University who always managed to make the subject both enthralling and informative – even the statistics element!

There are several forms of Interviewer (and recruiter) bias, most commonly people think of stereotyping, halo and horns, or the mirror (I like you because you’re like me) or the opposite effect (I don’t like you because you are not like me). Similarly there are several variations of these effects and the terminology used to describe them but in its most basic form it really does boil down to – ‘I just don’t like you’.
