JTC Jersey Wanderers Team Up For Community Work Stroll along the cobbled streets and enjoy major brand stores and unique, independent locally owned boutiques and a wide range of eateries. Whether it’s for a business breakfast, morning coffee, a light bite while shopping, spa treatments, cocktails or a vibrant night out ... Liberty Wharf is the new social hub of Jersey from dawn ‘til dusk.
A group of boys, parents and coaches from JTC Wanderers FC recently came to the assistance of Jersey Riding for the Disabled when they needed help to rake through the sand school at Le Claire stables. The group worked on weeding and levelling off the sand school making it easier and safer for the
ponies, riders and side walkers. Bob Lawrence from JTC Wanderers said: “As an FA Charter Standard Community Club, our ethos extends beyond just focusing on football. We also feel it is important to give back to our community through meaningful and helpful projects. This work the boys and their
parents have done for Jersey Riding for the Disabled is a great example of where the team work developed in playing football can be channelled to help others outside of the game." Cathy Fricker from the Jersey Riding for the Disabled said: “Riding for the Disabled helpers and riders are extremely
grateful to the JTC Jersey Wanderers for giving up their time to do so much work at the sand school. RDA Jersey are totally dependent on volunteers to enable our children and adults to ride in a safe and enjoyable environment. The boys and their parents did a fantastic job, we are very grateful to them for giving up their spare time to help us.”

The Travel Solutions Customer Service Awards 2015
Nominations for this year’s Travel Solutions Customer Service Awards will open on 3rd August.
Awards founder, Julie Todd, is encouraging everyone to get involved:
Organised in association with the Chamber of Commerce, the awards celebrate excellence, best practice and innovation in customer service. Their aim is to highlight the contribution great customer service can make to a business’ success – and reward those amongst us who offer that special something on a daily basis across the island.
‘We have all experienced good and bad service in Jersey. Social media makes it easier than ever for us to complain when things go wrong. The awards give the Jersey public the opportunity to redress the balance and recognise and reward those who do a fabulous job. It is free to nominate a team or individual, and you could really make someone’s day by doing so.
This year is the fifth year since they launched and sees a new headline sponsor, Travel Solutions, who have committed to the awards for a three-year period. Previous headline sponsors have included HSBC and Jersey Post, both of whom continue to remain firmly involved by sponsoring a category, alongside other businesses such as Sure, Lloyds Bank and AirtelVodafone. These awards are different than the normal “self-submissions”, as it is the general public who are able to nominate individuals or teams in Jersey who have gone beyond the call of duty to offer excellent customer service. This raises the integrity of the awards as they are voted for solely by the customers of local businesses. Previous winners represent a wide spectrum of the island’s business community both in terms of size and sector. Last year’s successes included the manager of Café 1837 (inside Voisins); the team at Lloyds Bank; and a mechanic at Roberts Garage. Award categories are designed to be inclusive of all of Jersey’s business community. They are: • Employee of a large business • Employee of a medium business • Employee of a small business • Self-employed person • Public services employee • Tourism & Hospitality employee • Aspiring star (young person showing great promise) • Humble volunteer (charitable worker) • Best team • Best overall customer experience
‘Last year we introduced the Aspiring Star award, which is specifically targeted at young people new to the customer service environment. They may just be a part-time ‘Saturday worker’ but are already standing out from the crowd. We had some inspiring nominations and we hope that we will see even more this year. After all they are the future champions of customer service.’ Some of the nominations received from the public can be truly heart-warming. Some examples from last year are: “This is our 5th return visit to (the hotel) and what makes it so special is the outstanding service, especially from Tom. He has such a warm welcoming smile and greeting. His attention to detail, looking after you, his customer, as if you are part of his family is excellent, and makes you feel at home. He truly is excellent at his job and a great asset to (the hotel). I would like to thank him for making outstanding customer service look natural.” “Vicky is a breath of fresh air. She is always ready to help with a smile. Everyone who visits (the food retailer) is so warmly welcomed by her and her team. Clearly, they all love working there. Vicky remembers – and knows – all her customers. She gives great advice on how to cook your purchases. Her tender customer care to the elderly, and her fun loving ways of serving her customers is awesome. If you haven’t been there before, do call in and you will see I’m right. Thank you.”

Some of the team from Lloyds Bank who won the BEST TEAM award.
“Samantha is am amazing woman and nothing is too much trouble. As soon as you walk in to the shop you are always greeted with a smile! Samantha always makes time for everyone, she provides all her customers – new and existing – with assistance. Even when it comes to closing time she will never rush you to close up. It is a lovely shop with lovely employees only too happy to help. She offers a fantastic service and – more importantly – with a smile! It makes it an enjoyable and pleasurable shopping experience that keeps me coming back again and again!”
The manager from Cafe 1837 was the overall winner
Nominations are open until September 14th and there are various ways of making your vote: • online at: thecustomerserviceawards.com; • by text to 07781 476276; • by completing a nomination form to be found island-wide throughout the voting period. An afternoon tea Awards ceremony takes place on Thursday 7th October, at The Pomme D’Or Hotel, compered by Channel 103 FM. For further information on the awards, please contact Julie Todd on 07781 116713 or email contact@ thecustomerserviceawards.com. www.thecustomerserviceawards.com

British Red Cross Thanks TTS - New Road Resurfacing Trial Family Firm For £7,000 f
News In Brie
Transport and Technical Services is trialling a different type of road resurfacing which is quicker and more cost effective. The new process costs about a third of the price of traditional resurfacing. It also takes about a tenth of the time to install. The existing surface is left in place and the new product called Gripfibre® is spread over the top and rolled, and it is then given time to set.
New Homes For Troy Court Plans for Troy Court to be knocked down and replaced with six blocks of modern housing accommodation were approved by Jersey’s Planning Applications Committee. Les Vaux Housing Trust asked for permission to demolish 108 homes in seven existing blocks at Grands Vaux and replace them with 123 new social rented homes. Under the plans, each household would have access to an outdoor space, such as a patio or balcony, plus three communal areas.
St Martin Parish Float The St Martin’s Battle of Flowers Association want to erect two marquees in a field at L’Abri Farm, on La Grande Route de Faldouet and use them to build the parish float. The Committee accepted the Planning department’s view that changing the use of the field temporarily would not cause harm to the Green Zone or hinder its long term agricultural use, and that the impact on the countryside and traffic wouldn’t be unreasonable. There were five letters objecting to the proposal and sixteen supporting it.
More Bus Shelters Planned Transport and Technical Services is planning to install six new bus shelters at various locations around the Island and is asking for Islanders comments. Full information and drawings are available on the gov.je website for anyone wishing to comment during the consultation period which closes on Friday 10 July.

Allegations Of Animal Cruetly Against Jersey Customs Former trainee dog handler David Ormsby made several serious allegations of animal cruelty against Jersey Customs during his recent employment tribunal hearing. Mr Ormsby alleges that he witnessed dogs being punished "in a completely disproportionate manner". One officer is alleged to have picked a dog up by his harness, punched him in the head, and shook him violently up and down while holding onto the back of the harness. He then "threw the dog across the room to the exit, before going over to him, picking him up again, and throwing him into the hallway." A dog trainer is alleged to have utilised cruel 'reinforcement' methods including using a dog's collar to choke him to the point where the dog lost consciousness. These dogs perform a valuable service and deserve to be treated with decency and respect. To treat them otherwise is unprofessional and unacceptable

Islanders Vote With Their Feet At New Sure Store Islanders have embraced the new concept in retail that is Sure’s new interactive store on King Street. Over 6,000 customers visited the store in its first week, double the number that would typically visit Sure’s previous high street shop.
The new store, which is located on the corner of New Street and King Street, offers a digitally interactive shopping experience that gives customers the opportunity to serve themselves when choosing phones and payment plans, as well as providing self-service top-up and bill payment kiosks, which dramatically reduce queue times. Whilst the new store is unapologetically hi-tech, Sure’s team of friendly, knowledgeable assistants are still available to help customers who prefer to ask someone for expert advice rather than using the interactive touchscreens.

“Our customers can be in and out quickly if they want, or can spend more time with our staff finding out about our products and services. The shop is designed to reduce queue times but during busy periods, it is still likely that our customers will have to wait for a short while so we have provided a lounge at the back of the store replete with comfortable seating, refreshments, a TV and iPads for people to enjoy whilst waiting for an assistant.” Sure has installed 55-inch self-serve touchscreens which help customers to put together their own packages, compare phones or simply email information to themselves that can be perused at their own leisure.
In addition to the interactive touchscreens, the new shop has been given a very modern makeover with stunning video screens wrapped around the interior. These areas are designed not only to deliver marketing messages but will also engage customers by serving up a few personalised “The store has been designed to give our surprises as well! The personal touch is also evident in the extremely popular lounge area where shoppers can enjoy a warm or cold drink and a chance to take the weight off their feet whilst waiting to be served.

Bicycles On The Road…
Yes, We're Still Moaning!
I used to hear people moaning about bicycles all the time but I never really understood why. I would hear about accidents and immediately think it was the fault of some reckless driver. I have only recently started driving and now I understand what all the fuss is about, let me tell you about my past few days: DAY 1 Driving along the avenue, behind a cyclist! Excuse me, can you move out of my way and perhaps even go on the CYCLE TRACK - 2 metres to your left! How infuriating. DAY 2 Waiting at a traffic light and a cyclist brushes passed my car to get in front – do you really think you have achieved much by clipping my wing mirror and moving forward two metres? Because I can tell you, you haven’t. Instead you have made my blood boil, scratched my wing mirror and not to mention, very unsafely pushed in front. DAY 3 (About an hour ago!) I was just leaving my parking space, so I did what any normal driver would do and checked all around me – it was clear so I reversed back into the road and went to pull off. Before I knew it a cyclist had come flying out of nowhere and in one diagonal swoop decided to overtake me from the adjoining lane - just as I had started driving! The thing that annoyed me the most, he then had the cheek to yell abuse at me! After following the idiot, who was controlling his bicycle with only one hand and peddling every 10 metres, for approximately 3 minutes he finally went on the pavement and steered danger towards pedestrians instead! At least he was out of my way! Can all cyclists please take note: If you are going to cycle on the road can you please; stay on the road (and not pavement hop), stay a safe distance away from traffic and finally keep to a sensible pace or please just walk to work, some of us are in a rush!
I don't know how many times we have to complain about the mess along the piers, but I’m sure it’s getting worse.
Restoring Faith in Humanity On one of the social media pages a woman asked for any Co-op stamps to be donated as she was struggling to get her food shopping for the family. There were dozens of replies offering to buy necessities for the family, children’s clothes and toys and numerous understanding comments. Great to see people pulling together and offering support. Whilst I was shopping in the Co-op last week I saw an elderly woman at the till, on another checkout was a man who noticed the woman’s shoe lace was undone so he immediately went over and helped her - I thought this was such a kind act, so lovely to see people helping each other out!
I whitnessed a young man lying on the bench drinking his beer and smoking his fags and then leaving without picking up his rubbish! To my amazement he even had a carrier bag with him and the bin was just 10 yards away!

Where did you train? I trained mainly in Zimbabwe, but I continued training in the UK. What type of extensions do you do? I do all types of extensions from weaves and beads to bonds and Brazilian knots. Which one would you recommend for first timers? My favourite is weave on because it’s suitable for all types of hair whether white or black. It’s also cheaper than other types of extensions and causes very little damage to hair. Do you sell the hair extensions? Yes, we sell all colours and length of weave wefts, nano beads and micro bead. If you want clip ins we make them for you.

Celebrating 21 Years with Murphy’s Hi Tim, tell us a bit about your background and how you’ve got to where you are today. Well I have been in retail now for the past 35 years. I started my career at Rock Island, I was there for thirteen years from the age of 20. Rock Island was mainly a jeans retailer with some fashion thrown in. Thirteen years later I started a small ladies and men’s shop aiming more towards the high fashion side although I didn’t know it would work. I was very excited at the time of the prospect of having my own business.
mixed with some clearance items, clearance meaning the end of a line of clothing and shoes. Some of these deals have been very good for me and the customer. What are the biggest challenges facing smaller independent retailers? Obviously the internet, luckily there are still some people out there who wish to feel a product and try the product on before they buy. Here at Murphy’s we watch the internet prices very carefully. We can beat some prices, some we match and some we come close to. Another good thing about Murphy’s is it’s easy to return a product and get a no quibble money back, even on sale items.

The Biggest Loser 2015 Saturday 6th June saw the end of the Biggest Loser Challenge 2015 for 10 contestants with over 130 people attending the prize giving night at the Pomme D’Or Hotel. Over the last 12 weeks the contestants had been concentrating on losing weight and stepping up their exercise regime, some of them going from no exercise at all to Personal Training sessions, Fit Club Classes and weekly Club Walks. Peter Collins was the compere and DJ for the night. The night started off with Ben explaining about the Biggest Loser Challenge and complementing the contestants on their weight and inch loss results – some losing more inches that weight, he also explained to the audience about the Fit Club and Slim Club that he runs. The night was not just about the Biggest Lose, prizes were awarded to Fit Club and Slim Club members – 1st award was presented to the juniors who attend the Fit Club classes and this was awarded to Zoe Raphael. 2nd award was presented to the Best Adult Newcomer to the Fit Club and was awarded to Andy Buckley and the 3rd award was for the Biggest Achievement since start-up who attend the Slim Club and was awarded to Rebecca Statt. Moving on to the Biggest Loser results, the 10 contestants were Marianne Bougourd, Megan Rose, Cheryl Raphael, Rebecca Statt, Catherine Kirby, Ben Harvey, Caroline Wharrah, Dominic Wilson, Sarah Lloyd and Fiona Wilson. Contestants were presented with a framed certifacte and a medal with the final three being given a month free classes at Fit Club. The winner also won a place at Big Ben’s Spanish Retreat worth over £750. The three finalists were: 3rd Ben Harvery 2nd Sarah Lloyd 1st Caroline Wharrah Well done to the above three on doing a superb job and changing their lifestyles in a big way. They now look at like in a totally different way. Ben H found it quite challenging but had great support from his family and friends which spurred him on. Sarah was so pleased that she had dropped a couple of dress sizes and found the Fit Club Classes so much easier than she did 12 weeks before. Caroline started off by joining the Slim Club and committed to the Biggest Loser Challenge. She wanted to lose weight and
have a healthier lifestyle and was struggling big time in attending other classes as she did not feel comfortable attending them When Caroline had her first personal training session with Ben she could not on the treadmill and three months later there was no stopping her! She would jump on as soon as she got to a session of her early morning training sessions. Caroline lost over 3 ½ stone within the 12 weeks of the challenge and is still attending Fit Club Classes which are early mornings and evenings together with the Club Walk on a Sunday morning. Caroline is looking forward continuing to get fitter and slimmer and is looking forward to her Retreat to Spain in September this year along with other Fit Club Members. Well done to all! Ben would like to say a big thank you to all who attended the evening and the companies that donated raffle prizes together with the management and staff at the Pomme D’Or Hotel. Without the support, these events could not go ahead. The challenge was not only for the benefit of the contestants but also to help raise money for ABC (After Breast Cancer) Charity. Some £4000 was raised during the 12 week challenge and Ben has nominated ABC as his charity for this year, hoping to raise more funds over the coming months.

Slim Start Club Slim Start Club started up in October 2014 and has seen some great results in the first 6 months with one member losing over 4 stone who never thought she could do it.

BBQ Ideas by Rebecca Statt
The format of the class is weigh in with measurements taken of bust/chest, waist and hips on the first week, with weekly weigh ins. Slim Club also has an on board chef, Rebecca Statt, who is exclusive to the club. She prepares a healthy dish which the members have the opportunity to taste this and obtain the recipe to make at home, the class is then followed by half an hour gentle exercise. For Sale By Tender
As agents we like to think we are on top of the property market, but sometimes, very unusually we are unsure on the value of a property.
Everything is worth what somebody will pay for it, unless the surveyor says otherwise, but in most cases with the aid of a few secret weapons available to us and drawing on our knowledge and experience of the market, we can put a reasonable guide price on a property, and if the buyers agree, we will get a sale. If the surveyor agrees within reason, all should progress. However, in some cases that is trickier to do. We currently have a traditional Jersey Granite property we are dealing with. 7 Reasons To Opt For Blinds Blinds or curtains? Iit’s a big decision to make in any home. Window treatments can significantly change the look of your home, especially if you have plenty of windows. Additionally, window treatments have a major effect on the way you live your life inside your home. While curtains have been the standard choice for years, more recently people are beginning to discover the advantages of blinds. Below is a list of seven reasons why you should choose blinds over curtains for your home.

Curtains Are A Bigger Fire Hazard One of the big reasons that people switch from curtains to blinds is to avoid fire hazards. Because curtains stretch from floor to ceiling and are made of flammable fabric, they can cause a fire to spread quickly. “Rows of boxes - I can never make them look neat and have often wondered what happens if I write over the lines?”
Many have suggested that in time, offices would become paperless. Well, I cannot speak for all offices but mine has more paper than ever, particularly on my desk and stored away in archives and it came through our doors predominantly in the shape of ‘forms’ so we are certainly further from paperless than we were years ago. A great deal of effort went into attaining this paperless goal but we never made it and in fact things got worse! The interesting point is that we appeared to have been on the right track for a little while but then a series of events came about to halt all endeavours: compliance and regulatory matters took a hold of us followed by data security issues and the idea that we must retain as much information for as long as possible in order to provide an information audit trail and protect ourselves from being sued in the future. I am reminded almost weekly when I hear dear Joe Pasquale utter those squeaky doleful words “I’ve had an accident!” that we are being invited once again to take legal action
and fill in a form. Our screens are littered with ambulance chasing personal injury law firms hounding us to sue the council, take an action against our employers, builders, local restaurants etc etc. Everyone is at it and the blame culture, which started in the USA, has swept our land creating a never ending need for more paperwork and form filling. Follow this with the mountain of forms which come out of KYC and due diligence processes, plus firms offering to help you claim for miss sold credit protection insurance and we have a whole new world of forms we never saw before. And - we never got rid of any of the old ones!
Filling in forms has become as much of a test for us as it is to remember the 50 odd passwords and PINs we now require just to get through the day hydrated and fed. I like the analogy with that Survivor Island programme where all you need is water, food and shelter. On the Island you go out and collect your food or kill it, whereas in real life • Forms with rows of boxes for all the • Special password options for you have to equip yourself with letters of your name or other entry. Sometimes the options aren’t entirely relevant or obvious to you

The Importance of Networking by Claire Boscq-Scott #TheBQB
Not networking, but give and receive “It doesn’t stop there. The deeper I looked, the more I realised, this reciprocity philosophy isn’t a new one.” I am sure most of you have heard of Stephen R Covey’s book, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People: Powerful Lessons in Personal Change, if you haven’t, get yourself a copy and read it.

In my research, I discovered that Misner said that “Givers Gain” is In his book, “Habit 4” is called a philosophy based on the law of Think Win/Win. Think Win/ reciprocity, so I went on to look Win isn't about being nice, nor for a definition. is it a quick-fix technique. We must not only ask ourselves what we want, It doesn’t stop there. The deeper I but also ask what the other looked, the more I realised, this party wants from a given reciprocity philosophy isn’t a new situation, bearing in mind that one. it’s ok to walk away if a common agreement is not found. The concept of “Ayni” is a value held dear to the Andean traditions. Following this very good read, This practice of community I encountered Dr Ivan Misner, sharing dates back to the ancient who is the founder of BNI, the agricultural times of the Incan world’s largest business network empire and is still practiced organisation. I realised he was today in the form of working talking about a similar concept together. Simply translated, it and called it “Givers Gain”. In the means “today for you, tomorrow context of networking groups, for me”. “Ayni” refer to the concept people who adopt this philosophy of reciprocity or mutualism among dedicate themselves to giving people, the law of “Ayni” states that business to their fellow network- everything in the world is mutually ers rather than making their connected and interrelated. daily life in many communities like the Q'ero tradition: the law of “Ayni” – the sacred art of reciprocity. The cooperation between the members of a community when one member gives to another, he or she is entitled to receive something back, still today “Ayni” is a form of service in which farmers assist one another in the working of the fields.
Rather than managing a seasonal crop one family at a time, groups of workers would gather together to divide up the labour. So, put simply, in networking by providing benefits to others you will be creating strong relationships that will eventually bring benefits to you. These benefits will be created often in a very roundabout way rather
than directly from the person you benefit. Remember my pollinating theory, it is a small action in one place, which has a ripple effect that creates another action somewhere else. The give and receive philosophy is an enormously powerful tool for growing the profitability of your own business.

Digital Jersey support NewFinance, a leading global FinTech network, as they launch the Jersey branch during an interactive forum on 22nd July at the Digital Jersey Hub.
JT Achieves Top Industry Award
NewFinance’s vision is to build a global network of FinTech clusters to support entrepreneurs who are bringing positive change to the global finance industry through technological innovation.
JT is delighted to have attained the prestigious Avaya ‘Platinum’ status, placing them firmly among an elite group of telecommunications companies to have achieved this and the first in the Channel Islands.
The event will include talks by Andy Jarrett, Digital Jersey Director, and NewFinance Founder and CEO Eddie George, followed by an open-floor discussion and project showcase.
Avaya award Platinum status only to those Partners that can meet their specific objectives of; certified technical expertise, sales and marketing skills and customer satisfaction levels that are measured on an ongoing basis.
Andy Jarrett commented: “Opening a NewFinance Chapter in Jersey is a fantastic opportunity for our Island. Digital Jersey is fully behind the exciting and rapidly developing arena of FinTech in Jersey and the further collaboration between our financial and digital industries as this initiative grows. This project will be a great catalyst for further FinTech business creation in Jersey and I look forward to where our own NewFinance chapter will take us!”
Luxury Property Sales Increase A surge in high net worth individuals relocating to Jersey is having a positive effect on the island’s economy. Last year’s significant increase in luxury property sales, which totaled £90m in comparison to the last five year average of £25m, added a welcome £4 million to the public purse and demonstrates confidence in Jersey, both for its economy and as a destination of lifestyle choice.
Government PCs Open To Hackers It has been reported in recent weeks that the Government Digital Service will not extend its £5.5m deal with Microsoft to extend support for Windows XP, leaving government computers that still run on the obsolete operating system at risk from hackers. The service said ending the support meant “weaknesses that are found in unsupported products will remain upatched and will be exploitable by relatively low-skilled attackers”.
Forum 3 – 12 Months On Forum 3, Jersey’s premier destination for entrepreneurs, start-ups and existing business operations, is now one year old and owner Vantage Innovation has further exciting development plans in the pipeline. The dream to establish Jersey’s first tech hub is becoming a reality. Forum 3 is Jersey’s only ecosystem, the ethos is to enable embryonic business ideas to incubate in a supportive environment and accelerate into fully formed businesses.

Local Company Puts Channel Islands On The Digital Map A NEW small business class booking web app, designed and being built by a Channel Islands marketing agency, will launch on the world’s largest crowdfunding platform this month. Boocla is an online booking website for anyone who runs classes or courses. It has been created by Oi Labs, the digital innovation arm of Oi. If you are an instructor, teacher, trainer or tutor, with Boocla you get a mobile-friendly website, amazing class booking system, free sub-domain, free hosting, and free business cards for under $240 a year. Using the latest Google technology, Boocla allows people to create a website in minutes then easily add, manage, sell and receive payments for spaces at their classes/ courses. Customers can quickly create a two-step profile enabling them to find and book classes for anything they are interested in. They can login to view schedules, make payments, enable text notifications and email reminders for classes already booked. Boocla also has a global class search function for people going away and wanting to book into classes. Oi Labs is launching Boocla on Kickstart-
er, which has over 8.7 million investors (mainly US-based), with a target of $25,000. If reached, Boocla will be launched by the end of October this year. ‘We are really excited about Boocla in terms of being one of the first Channel Islands companies to take a web app like this global,’ said Peter Grange, Oi Chief Executive Officer. With a 30-day funding goal, investors on Kickstarter can contribute from $1 upwards to back Boocla. The average investment
amount is $25, and in return investors receive rewards rather than equity. For example a $25 investment will return investors 2 months Boocla subscription, 50 business cards and a Boocla training bag. ‘We identified a gap in the market and believe Boocla is ideal for any small business that runs classes, from yoga to personal training or music to cookery classes,’ said Ben Clarke, Oi Creative & Digital Director. Interviews and Feedback – Or Lack Thereof! “If you still haven’t received a
response from the company then walk away and consider yourself a lucky escapee” Any regular readers will be able to re-call a blog I wrote a couple of months ago entitled ‘I just don’t like you and other reasons for rejection’ If you didn’t catch it you can find it here http://issuu.com/ jerseypages/docs/issue_22 . The topic of that article was interviewer bias and the reason I bring this up is its close relation with this month’s topic…. Interviews & Feedback (or lack thereof!). Normally my articles each month are prompted by a personal / professional situation I have experienced in the previous 30 days and July’s issue is no exception to that rule. This month I saw not just one, but several comments on social media regarding lack of feedback post interview. I know from my personal experience of working with candidates that there have been times when they have not received feedback from a company when interviewing direct. The truth is I don’t understand this, I cannot grasp why companies (and even some recruiters) would not want to give feedback. I’m not even referring to long and extensive feedback, although that’s always helpful. I’m talking about a simple response, a
simple ‘’Thank you for your time on this occasion we have decided not to pursue….’. So this month we are going to look at Interviews, more importantly how to follow up successfully post interview! The bottom line here is that all companies should give feedback to applicants, regardless. A call would be nice but failing that (and I do understand time constraints) an e-mail or snail mail will do. There is never a good reason not to give a candidate feedback following an interview. If time was given on both sides then a response is only polite. This works the other way round as well, employers expect a response from the candidate if they request an interview or place an offer. It’s no different either way. The above being said, more often than is acceptable lately, candidates are not getting feedback. If you fall into this category it can be a worrying and confusing situation. How long do you leave it before contacting the company, you don’t want to seem pushy but surely 3 weeks is long enough? Who should you contact, human resources that arranged the interview, the manager that
interviewed you or the consultant that put you forward if you’re using an agency? There is no concrete way to deal with this, as a rule I would always send a follow up e-mail shortly after the initial interview, within 24 hours is a good timescale. If you are using a consultancy they will do this for you. This e-mail need not be extensive, simply thank the interviewers for their time, and if you are interested in continuing in the interview process let them know. Likewise, if following the interview you feel it’s not the right fit tell them that too. The company will appreciate your honesty and it will leave the door open for any future positions you may wish to apply for. Then wait. If after a few weeks you haven’t received a response then e-mail again. E-mail is normally the best ‘first’ contact as you are not putting anyone ‘on the spot’. E-mail HR (if they were part of the interview) and cc in the manager or managers that interviewed you. A short few lines expressing you still have an interest in the position and explaining you understand they must be very busy but would appreciate an update on what stage the company is in regarding the hiring process for the role will do. This will give you a good indication; a decision maker could have been on holiday or ill. If after a week there is no response, give the HR contact a call and ask for an update. If it’s a case of getting a pro-
forma response stating you were unsuccessful then do not be afraid to go back and ask for specific feedback, explain that if it’s technical skills you lacked, you would like to brush up on them, if it was interview technique, what can you improve? If you are using a consultancy, again don’t be afraid to push for a response or feedback, they should be doing all of the above on your behalf and if they don’t have the answers for you they are not doing their jobs right. And finally, if after all of the steps above have been taken you still haven’t received a response from the company then walk away and consider yourself a lucky escapee. By Marie-Clara Thaureux
