Get Behind Run4Men! Run4Men returns for it’s fifth year in Jersey on the 13th September 2015, starting at 11am. The event will bring together male participants of all ages to raise funds for research into new ways to prevent, diagnose and treat cancer. This year the organisers hope to attract a record number of participants to walk, jog or run, in a fantastic display of support for Cancer Research UK’s life saving work. The Jersey fundraising committee is urging Islanders to get going, get active and get involved with the boys beating cancer this autumn!
Robert Christensen, Chairman, Cancer Research UK, Jersey Committee, commented:
‘Cancer Research UK has during the past decade achieved fantastic progress in the ongoing fight against cancer. Pioneering new and innovative research has made earlier diagnosis and the development of new treatments possible. As a result, last year’s figures showed that half of those who have suffered with cancer now live for another decade or more. This figure has doubled since the 1970s, and a target of three in every four cancer patients Run4Men was established to provide an event for men surviving for five years or more has been set by the that is comparable to the popular and well supported charity to be achieved within the next twenty years.’ Race For Life for ladies. Driving Theory Test Changes
Farm Buildings To Be Converted
The Planning Applications Committee has approved plans for 18 new homes on a former farm in St Saviour. Existing outbuildings and staff accommodation at Highstead on La Rue du Tapon, St Saviour will be demolished or converted to develop a mix of homes. Plans agreed by the committee will see the refurbishment and sympathetic extension of high quality existing buildings on site, including the main listed house and the original farmhouse. An unsightly modern agricultural shed will be removed. The plans include safety improvements to nearby roads funded by the applicant.
Parish Community Scheme Rejected Plans for a new 60 place nursery and 28 new homes for the over-55s on Upper Clarendon Road have been turned down by the Panel. The Parish of St Helier submitted a second set of proposals for new community facilities on the site of its former four-storey care home, Maison du Ville, which closed in 2013. Plans for a new-five storey building included a restaurant and in-house medical support. The Jersey Architecture Commission raised concerns about an earlier application but the department considered the current plans had addressed these and other issues relating to the possible impact of the new development on neighbours, parking and traffic and indicated the revised proposals were in line with the policies of the Island Plan.
Sierra Madre Villas Havre des Pas Plans for a new apartment block at Havre des Pas were rejected after the Planning Applications Committee echoed concerns by residents. A report noted that the new building would be larger and higher than the existing pair of houses, but that its traditional design would fit within the general street scene. It is also in a location where the Island Plan strongly encourages new residential development. However committee members expressed concerns about the lack of visitor car parking and general overdevelopment of the site.
Vote On Your Town Priorities People are being asked to vote on their top priorities for town. The online surveys are a follow up to consultation workshops held in May to get people’s input to plans for improving St Helier. The regeneration of St Helier is one of the Council of Ministers’ priorities. The workshops were set up by a group of ministers responsible for delivering town regeneration. They wanted to find out what issues facing town concerned people, and to look at what changes they wanted. People were asked for their views and ideas on three themes

The surveys are open to everyone with an interest in St Helier, not just those who live and work there. The findings will be put together with the output from further targeted consultation with other people who live, work or visit St Helier which will be carried out over the summer. This will assist Ministers in identifying and prioritising actions and proposals to improve St Helier. http://consult.gov.je/portal/fsh/
Weddings On The Beach Have Been Approved The States agreed to extend marriage laws to allow couples to marry on beaches or at other open air venues. Until now marriages were only permitted in churches or registered premises approved by a parish constable. Deputy Louise Doublet put forward the proposal in order to give people more choice and to help grow the wedding tourism industry in Jersey.

Nominations for the TravelSolutions Customer Service Awards are open Now in their fifth year and organised in association with the Jersey Chamber of Commerce, the awards celebrate excellence, best practice and innovation in customer service. Their aim is to highlight the contribution great customer service can make to a business’s success. This year sees a new headline sponsor, TravelSolutions, with a three-year commitment to the event. Previous headline sponsors have included HSBC and Jersey Post, both of which remain firmly involved, alongside other businesses such as Sure, Lloyds Bank and Airtel Vodafone. The event is different than the normal “self-submission" approach to awards, since it is the general public who are able to nominate. This gives the awards a level of transparency and integrity that the organisers are committed to protect. With the full support of Jersey Business and the Town Centre retailers, the awards event takes place during a busy National Customer Service Week. There is a large

number of customer-focused events taking place during the week of 5-9 October, including several initiatives which include the newly-trained retail Ambassadors. Awards founder and director of organisers Collaborate Communications Julie Todd, is encouraging everyone to get involved: ‘We have all experienced good and bad service in Jersey. Social media makes it easier than ever for us to complain when things go wrong. The awards give the Jersey public the opportunity to redress the balance and recognise and reward those who do a fabulous job. It is free to nominate a team or individual, and you could really make someone’s day by doing so. ‘Last year we introduced the Aspiring Star award, which is specifically targeted at young people new to the customer service environment. They may just be a part-time ‘Saturday worker’ but are already standing out from the crowd. We had some inspiring nominations and we hope that we will see even more this year. After all they are the future champions of customer service.’
Nominations are open until 14th September and there are various ways of voting: • online at thecustomerserviceawards.com • by completing a nomination form to be found island-wide.

Stick To The Rules! Dogs on the beach: I love taking my dog to the beach during the times she can run free, however, I must admit in the winter months I love it so much more! Knowing I can take her on the beach at any time without watching the clock. Bearing this in mind I still firmly believe the current laws are great - I don’t mind dogs running up to me or them running around at all, but we have to remember that there are others who are afraid of dogs and don’t want them running around.
Where is the summer? Today the weather outside is horrid (on the day of submission). I think it would be nice if our Jersey Summer decided to turn up for the rest of the August at least. Cloudy, windy and rainy days will soon be officially back so fingers crossed that our summer days return first as I bought a pair of shorts a couple month’s back and I still haven’t had chance to wear them yet!!
On the beach last week a group of men had their dog off the lead, he (or she) was running up to anybody who walked passed including young children. The dog may have been friendly, but the children were frightened. People need to realise the beach is a public place & should stick to the rules. Dogs should be kept on leads from 10.30am to 18.00pm between 1st May to 30th September.

Co-Operative Medical Care & Pharmacy Locale Will Move Co-operative Medical Care will relocate its St Helier surgery to new premises later this year, offering patients a welcoming, modern and convenient medical environment. be complacent and ensure they carry out safety checks before heading out to sea. This advice is being strengthened by the use of the following ‘MAYDAY’ reminder message. (Below)
Safety messages, which include awareness of fast rising tides and the importance of telling someone your plans will be highlighted through local media. People holidaying in the Island can also view a short safety awareness film being shown at the Visitor Services Centre in Liberation Place as well as at Jersey Airport.
Mr Mathews continues, “With warm weather and rising sea temperatures being out on the water is a great way to spend the summer and we certainly don’t want to prevent anyone from doing so. However, this is a timely reminder for people to take the necessary precautions so everyone can enjoy the summer safely.”
Jersey Coastguard Manager Russell Mathews explains, “There have been a number of beach incidents already this summer where people have been left stranded because the quickly rising tide has cut them off. Although this does appear to catch out visitors more frequently it is important to remind residents who can easily forget just how quickly tides come in.” Local mariners are also reminded not to
News In Brief
The Transport and Technical Services Department wants to move all recycling to a single purpose-built modern area at La Collette, with five recycling facilities for different types of waste. La Collette is designated as a site for solid waste management in the 2011 Island Plan.
The practice, including De Faye’s Pharmacy which is owned by Pharmacy Locale, will relocate from David Place to St Aubin House, the former Blockbuster video store which has lain empty since December 2013. The new and larger site will include a brand new surgery with four private rooms, allowing the team to offer a greater number of appointments per day. The pharmacy team will be on hand to offer healthcare advice and private consultations in their pharmacy consultation room. Butterfly Decline is Slower Than UK A ten-year study of Jersey’s butterfly population has shown that overall the Island’s species have declined, but at a lower rate than the UK. The Department of the Environment has co-ordinated the Jersey Butterfly Monitoring Scheme (JBMS) for the last ten years, depending on a team of unpaid volunteers who count butterflies each week throughout the spring and summer at 38 locations across Jersey. Over the last ten years, the volunteers have walked more than 3,600 miles, and counted 122,279 butterflies at 38 locations covering all Jersey’s main habitats.
Jersey-France New Electricity Cable Contracts Signed A new £40m electricity cable between Jersey and France has been given the go-ahead as Jersey Electricity and Guernsey Electricity agree to pay £20m each for the project, which will replace Jersey's first 55MW electricity cable, called EDF1. The original cable was installed in 1984 and has not been used since 2012. The project is expected to be completed in 2017. In January, Jersey's third undersea cable bringing electricity from France was officially switched on.

It is hoped that departing passengers at Jersey Airport on busy summer Saturdays will leave with a positive impression and a final refreshing taste of the Island courtesy of a free ice-cream initiative recently launched by Ports of Jersey. The Taste of Jersey idea is just one of a number of new initiatives being tested at the airport over the summer period as Ports of Jersey strives to enhance its passenger journey experience. Group Marketing & Communications Manager for Ports of Jersey, Alan Donald, explains: “This initiative stems from the recent NatWest Island Games when we were considering ways in which we could give departing participants a final positive reminder of the Island – the idea of a free Jersey ice-cream seemed to do the trick. It’s a simple gesture but one that was well received and welcomed”. Free Jersey ice-cream is being offered to all departing passengers waiting to check-in or pass through central security between 10am and 4pm on Saturdays, when Jersey Airport is at its busiest.

The Old Court House Inn This month we took a mini –trek from the big smoke and visited the newly refurbished Old Court House Inn. For those that don’t know (and we can’t imagine there would be many) the Old Court House is located in the heart of St Aubin’s bay and offers a wonderful place to ‘eat, drink or stay’ through any season. In summer evenings you can wine and dine outside the front of the building, twinkle lights hang beautifully from the decking as you enjoy the inspiring view offered by the quaint harbour opposite. With a raised area for parties when the sun is shining there wouldn’t be a reason to set foot inside but oh, you should. The first room we reached (and fell in love with) was what can only be described as Vintage Chic conservatory dining. The room is cosy and yet spacious with the glass surroundings ensuring your view of the stunning scenery is uninterrupted making it the perfect alternative to outside dining. Once we had ventured past the threshold there was no holding us back and we made our way through to what can only be described as a galley area, perfect for a glass before dinner, quiet dining or larger groups looking for an inside venue. The vintage theme continues whilst combining a nautical feel. Open brick walls, long seating benches covered in soft patchwork fabric and dark wooden furniture makes you feel you have stepped into the dining area of an old ship, a very clean and well cared for ship! An open doorway led us through to what we can only refer to as the ‘local county pub’ area, it’s traditional and the warm nautical theme really takes over in this room, with a bar that doubles as a boat, yes a boat. The boat bar dominates the back of the room pulling together the overall theme of the Old Court House perfectly; whilst a TV mounted on the wall ensures those in foe a few beers of an evening never miss any sporting action. The perfect situation of this bar means it is far enough away from the diners to offer a separation whilst it still manages to combine it’s self so fully into the cosy, relaxing and calming effect of the Old Court House in general. At this point we were already getting set to stamp our feet and never leave, then we were presented with the menu and to say that our mouths were watering just wouldn’t be a good enough description. The Old Court House Inn offers something for everyone, children, coeliac’s, vegetarians, meat lovers, sea food lovers, everyone. Being by the coast it is little surprise that a great part of the menu offered is speciality sea food, fresh (and wherever possible) locally sourced. But for those who prefer there are several other options including steaks, salad’s and delectable sandwiches even the old favourite ‘’Fish Finger S/W’’
features and we’re sure it’s a scrumptious work of art in comparison to our Friday 2am attempts! A handy menu key tells customers all about the food, ‘GF’ for coeliac’s, ‘V’, vegetarian you’re getting the idea. But what really struck us wasn’t the amazing thought for those with dietary restrictions but the thought for families. A handy ’K’ by the side of several (adult) meals meaning the kitchen will do you a child sized portion of many of the meals mum and dad could choose from. With so many other restaurants offering up frozen chicken goujons and beans for the kiddie menu seeing ‘real’ food for kids is any parents dream. We thoroughly enjoyed our visit to the Old Court House Inn and beforehand just didn’t think anything could have been done to improve upon this classic Jersey favourite. We couldn’t have been more wrong. The tranquil setting combined with a room for every occasion and for every taste makes it a delightful place to share a few glasses of wine on a summer evening. The inspired menu choices allow for all palates and the wine list has something for everyone even the most selective individuals. Couples, families or groups it is the perfect setting for all.

Our Gluten Free BBQ... Most Coeliac’s will understand the frustration of throwing or attending a Summer BBQ. Having your food oven cooked to not crosscontaminate anything is a real pain, and kind of defeats the point of having a BBQ! A couple of changes here and there and voilà simple recipes become gluten free! We have shared our 3 favourite BBQ recipes that can be enjoyed by everyone - Our beef burgers can be altered to your taste, just add in the extra ingredients and hey presto you’ve created your own! The potatoes may not be our recipe but they are too good to be missed off our top 3. The balsamic vinegar and honey chicken skewers are our favourites, but we’ll let you decide for yourselves!
Beef Burgers The majority of people love a good burger on the BBQ but are prone to buying them pre-made. This simple recipe only takes 5-10 minutes to prepare and can be tweaked to your own individual tastes. (We like to throw a few chilli flakes in for that added kick!) •500g beef mince •1 onion, diced •1 tbsp cornflour •2 tbsp dried herbs •Salt & pepper •1 tsp olive oil •1 tsp butter Fry the onions in the butter and olive oil for a couple of minutes and allow to cool slightly. Add the onions to the beef mince in a large bowl and combine using your hands. Add herbs, salt and pepper and cornflour and mix well with your hands. Shape mix into patties and flatten slightly with hands. You can now pop the patties in the fridge, covered in cling-film, until you need them. Add the patties to a medium heated BBQ and grill for a few minutes on each side, make sure the burgers are cooked thoroughly and serve with gluten free rolls (we personally recommend Waitrose own) or serve with salad.
Balsamic Vinegar & Honey Chicken Skewers • 8 Skewers •3-4 Chicken Breasts •Yellow Pepper •Red Onion •Red Pepper •3 tbsp Balsamic Vinegar •4 tbsp Honey •Salt & Pepper •1 crushed garlic clove First mix the vinegar and honey together in a large mixing bowl and add the garlic, salt and pepper to taste. Cut the chicken into 2cm chunks and throw into the marinade, mixing well to ensure all the chicken is covered. Slice the peppers and onions into even pieces and put to one side. You’re now ready to start your skewers. Alternate between chicken, pepper and onion to ensure your guests have a taste of everything. Once you have finished, drizzle the remaining marinade over the top. These can now be popped in the fridge until you need them or added straight to the BBQ, turning frequently for approximately 10 minutes or until chicken is cooked through.
Grilled Tarragon Potatoes This is a simple, but delicious recipe that will satisfy all of your guests! •6 red potatoes, cut lengthwise into wedges •Olive oil •Zest and juice of 1 lemon 2 teaspoons finely chopped fresh tarragon • Salt and freshly ground black pepper Preheat grill to medium-high. In a large bowl, combine potatoes, oil, lemon zest and juice, and tarragon. Toss to coat. Season with salt and pepper. Remove potatoes from the bowl and place on the BBQ, turning occasionally, for 10 to 15 minutes or until tender. Put the potatoes back in the bowl of marinade and toss to coat. Serve warm. Programme Revealed for Jersey Architecture Biennale 2015 The Association of Jersey Architects (AJA) has announced the full schedule of the Jersey Architecture Biennale 2015 (JAB15), a weeklong celebration of Jersey Architecture and Design taking place between 14th and 18th September.
JAB15 will deliver a diverse programme of events centred round the theme of ‘Celebrating Jersey Architecture and Planning’. The week highlights the positive contribution Jersey-based Chartered Architects and Jersey Planning have made to the enhancement of the Island’s built and natural environment over the last 50 years. Events include the 2015 Jersey Architecture Design Awards Exhibition, world-first presentations from the shortlist of the prestigious RIBA Stirling Prize, an exploration of Jersey’s part to play
in financing major capital projects such as The Shard, a £480 million project funded entirely through Jersey by the Qatari developers, and walking tours of St Helier’s key architectural sites.
Derek Mason, President of the AJA, commented: “I’m delighted to officially announce the full schedule of JAB15, a programme that has been carefully designed to appeal to a cross-section of Islanders and international visitors. The week’s events will be a real showcase of Jersey’s contribution to promoting excellence in international architecture, alongside providing unique opportunities to hear speakers who are truly world-class.” Attendance of most events is free, but booking is required. To see the full schedule and book, visit www. jab15.eventbrite.com

Final Stage Of Le Squez Regeneration The final stage of the regeneration of social housing at Le Squez, St Clement will begin following approval from the Planning Applications Committee. Le Squez phase 4 will see the existing buildings demolished and 154 new homes built in their place. The accommodation will be a mix of one, two and three bedroom affordable flats with community facilities, car parking and a community room for residents. The new scheme will create an environment which will be generally free of surface car parking, where pedestrians and cyclists take priority in the streets and courtyards. A new path will connect residents directly to FB Fields and Samarès School and all roads running through the estate will be closed to traffic. The scheme will link to the Eastern Cycle Route. The Jersey Architecture Commission described the scheme as an “exemplary work providing new residential accommodation of the highest quality… to the enormous benefit of the future residents”.

It’s Easy To Lose A Stone!
“
“
We have had some sales complete,
which is always a god send and a bit of an emotional roller coaster.
So that’s us most of the way through July now, certainly will be by the time you read this. A bit of a mixed month really, some great hot days and no wind, some others quite different, wet, windy and wild! A bit like the market has been for us this last few weeks. We have had some sales complete, which is always a god send and a bit of an emotional roller coaster. Those last minute hiccups that you never expect mainly because you never knew about them. Few people understand that we as agents do not usually get to see the contracts passed between lawyers, after we have initiated the sales instructions to all concerned parties. We tell the buyer’s and vendor’s lawyers who are the
parties involved and what the negotiated details are, and from there it is up to them to put a contract together and distribute it. It is often at this point that issues arise, either from the original contract or from new clauses or conditions required by the buyers. Maybe a boundary stone has moved or disappeared over time, particularly in the case of property that has not changed hands over a long period of time. That being the case, it has to be replaced with the agreement of all parties involved. This could include neighbours, in some cases who may not live at the property, or even reside in the Island. Now the hunt is on to locate them and their lawyers so agreements can be reached. What appear as small changes or
improvements to a property can also lead to similar complications, maybe a down pipe on a small extension has been put on the back of a wall and now technically is over a neighbouring property, or a drain re-routed across a small section of land. The list of similar issues is not endless, but is considerable and can catch out many a buyer, vendor or even us as agents. What action can you take if you are caught up in an issue like these? Well, first and foremost should be a can do attitude by all. Few of these problems are insurmountable and as long as everyone involved can keep an open mind and take a long term and pragmatic view, nothing really changes. There may be a bit of give and take over a few square
feet of land that is often in an inconsequential area of the garden, under a hedge or behind a wall, or it may be considerably more problematic but still resolvable by the application of common sense and lots of goodwill. If, god forbid, you do get caught in a spot by something similar to that mentioned, don’t forget that the services of your agent are still there. We do not disappear once the offer has been accepted and the paperwork processed, it is just that we cannot do very much once the legal process has started, but we helped bring both of you, buyer and seller together, often after a period of negotiation, and those are the same skills that could be put to good use again to resolve what may appear initially as the
unresolvable. Call us and get us involved, our fee doesn’t earn itself! For those interested, Harry is good, generally a bit warm but good nonetheless. Till next month. Dennis Shore, Manager

Is Business Travel For You? Enjoyed and relished by some; loathed by others. There are no sophisticated reasons for the different views, it’s just that some folk simply love to travel and others do it because their work demands it.

Focuses the mind though and how, even with the greatest of care, things can go dangerously wrong? (I agree - booking Transaero might be evidence demonstrating a clear absence of care!) These incidents aside, business travel can be a pleasurable experience, it just depends on your budget and how you can make it work for you. Given a handsome budget of course you can actually sleep on longer journeys and even the food can be palatable and it’s generally in the food area where things go awry. You really don’t want ‘food troubles’ when you still have a

thousand miles to cover. So here are a few tips for business travel, some might surprise you, others maybe a little more obvious: • Book your own travel plans! • Research your hotel layout and find a room away from the lifts • Double check your booking arrangements just before you leave. • Apply for frequent traveller cards and courier offers. • If your trip is further than 10,000km – do it in two sections with a break in the middle. You’ll otherwise waste the first day in any case. • If you choose to talk with anyone on a long haul flight, choose wisely. • Hold a second passport (duplicate) so that you can still travel when your other passport is in an Embassy visa clearance process. • Drink plenty of bottled water • Don’t be tempted on the last evening of a business trip to go out on a big night before a long flight – you will be astonished at what your body will go through! • Make sure some people know where you are going and when you should be expected and where. • Always carry a little cash and if in doubt about the currency, make sure you have some dollars which today is recognised as the international currency in most places. • If you do buy a phrase book – read it and USE it!
• Whatever you think is important for your trip – take a spare • Never accept a car ride from a stranger (or a drink!) • If you intend to visit somewhere potentially dangerous like Ukraine or Afghanistan, check the Foreign and Commonwealth office’s website for travel advice before you leave… then heed that advice. • Never joke about anything in an airport …ever. • Buy shares in the company that makes Imodium; and • Learn to recognise that name in a few other languages: for example Имодйем (was useful in Domodedovo) And finally whatever happens, if you travel to Prague, I hope you are never told like I was, that the hotel booked for you is at Hybernska, 36. An 80 strong audience packed St Paul’s Centre on 16th July to hear Voisin law firm and Jersey Citizens Advice deliver a thought-provoking presentation on the incoming Sex Discrimination Regulations. The Regulations will come into force on 1st September 2015 and are designed to protect against acts of discrimination on the grounds of sex, sexual orientation, gender reassignment, pregnancy and maternity. The free presentation was led by Dexter Flynn, English Solicitor from Voisin, supported by Stephanie Sanderson and Chief Executive of Jersey Citizens Advice, Malcolm Ferey. They used case studies and real-life examples to explain the complexities of the law in relation to the prohibited conduct under the Discrimination (Jersey) Law 2013 in the context of sex discrimination. A key message taken away by the audience of business leaders and managers was that acts of discrimination will leave employers and their employees exposed to a financial liability. The audience raised questions and the panel discussed the ease with which “office banter” may become offensive, the potential to offend people who are not in the direct conversation, and in some cases, the absence of a defence to claims of discrimination. Jersey Citizens Advice encouraged
businesses to use their mediation service for instances of discrimination in the provision of goods and services prior to consulting the tribunal. Dexter Flynn, English Solicitor, Voisin, says: ‘The seminar highlighted how much Jersey businesses are trying to embrace the new changes but also how much they still have to do. My overriding message is that everyone needs to be alive to the impact of this legislation whether they agree with it or not. Businesses need to start looking at implementing their policies now; the repercussions can be serious if there are any
failings in their systems. An employer is vicariously liable for acts of discrimination by its employees during the course of their employment – this applies regardless of whether the acts were done with the employer’s knowledge or approval. It is also important for employees to understand the potentially devastating personal consequences of their actions. It is vital that we disseminate this information to our business community to ensure the protection of both our employers and employees. At Voisin we are encouraging all clients old and new to come and talk to us about this area of law and we will assist as many businesses as we can.”

The Importance of Networking by Claire Boscq-Scott #TheBQB
Create Your Unique Message “I tell you what, once you have determined your “Core Unique Business Message”, networking will be so much easier for you.” I have to say, before I started my own business, my perception of the word brand was a business logo and I don’t think I was the only one to think this. I now know that branding is far more than just a logo. The brand, your brand, is everything to do with you and your business; from the way you dress to the way you talk about what you do. Every single step in your business needs to follow your vision and values.
place. Remember that “people buy from people” and being able to tell a compelling and authentic story about yourself, your business and your product or service, can easily influence and convince people to work with you.
One of the most difficult questions to answer, when networking, is “what is it that you do?” I find that a lot of people are actually experts in their field. However, when it comes to talking about what they do, they are not sure where to start.
Next we looked at her value and vision and how she could describe what it was she did in 10 words. Yes, just 10 words, but these 10 words must be crystal clear and completely focused on what you offer your clients. What is so unique about your services or products? What are the benefits of your service or product? How can you add value by exceeding their expectation every time? What will dramatically differentiate you from your competitors?
I did a little exercise with a client who was looking at penetrating a new market. My client wasn’t sure how she should approach businesses about her products. We first looked at her story; what it was that brought her to start her business in the first

you go; from your email signature to your business cards. You are the expert in your field so now you can tell your story. You can build confidence and create relationships. You will build credibility and trust. This will result in a greater number of clients and increased sales. You
will also have a more vibrant business. So here is my challenge to you; email your Core Unique Business Message, in just 10 words, to The busy Queen Bee (info@thebusyqueenbee.com) and not only will I select the five most powerful messages,

Get Your Ducks In A Row “When Two (or more) companies offering complimentary services team up, as long as all the ducks are in a row, it can only be a good thing.” Those that have already spotted the ad placed at the bottom of this page may have guessed the topic of this article. Partnerships. There are several different types of partnerships and ways in which those partnerships exist. The most common partnership people tend to think of is marriage, or, not to be out done by the times, co-habitation. This type of partnership generally sees two people come together and share resources. They live in the same house, share bills and chores; take it in turns to run the children to and from activities. It is a partnership that exists on a mutual level. Business partnerships are not that different and are becoming increasingly common. Two (or more) companies, generally offering complimentary services, team up and as long as all the ducks are in a row (and I will come back to ducks later!) It can only be a good thing. Two companies joining forces can create a new synergy, much like in the couples partnership the companies share resources giving them increased expertise and knowledge, providing them with a greater product base to offer their clients at a greater efficiency level than before. Each company gets access
to the others customer base as their capacity to deal with new business increases. Other partnerships can exist on a more outward level like Starbucks teaming up with Barnes and Nobles to offer coffee shops in bookstores. It worked for Starbucks as they had a larger client base and it worked for the bookstore as unlike others they had the USP of a Starbucks coffee shop in house! These partnerships often don’t have direct access to the inner workings of the other company and many are often found between company and, one or more of its service providers. In the recruiting world for example you will often see a consultancy advertising ‘’X’s preferred recruitment partner’’. In this scenario the company gains access to a pool of candidates they may not otherwise have and the consultancy gains from the company positions that will often not be out in the public domain. On another more basic level (but equally as important as all other partnerships) is the partnership between a company and an individual and using recruitment again, because hey it’s a recruitment article, is the partnership between a consultant and candidate. It is important to note here that if not for the skills brought by the candidates
the consultant’s job would not exist and therefore the onus should be on the consultant to provide an exceptional service, similarly however through the consultants partnerships with several other businesses they can provide the candidate with a broad range of positions that the candidate would likely not see otherwise.
animosity as a tug of war ensures.
There is a lot to consider when going into partnership, in recruitment I look to work with companies that build strong relationships with their employees, companies that invest in their talent and most importantly companies that want to work with me, I mean really want to work with me. They invite me into their business, answer my questions and allow me the opportunity to get to know the company and the way it works at a deeper level than I would if I was just forwarding CV’s. Equally I look for similar attributes in the candidates I work with, I look for openness, honesty and trust and most importantly the desire to work as a partnership combating career goals together.
And, finally it gives me the most enormous pleasure to announce LaytonAndrews Partnership with Green Lizard Solutions meaning as two halves of one whole we can really add value to our clients (and candidates) with the increased knowledge and expertise in all areas of outsourced services, HR, Recruitment, Training, Employment Screening, Payroll, Bookkeeping and Start-Up Support becoming an extension of your business – we are stronger together.
Every partnership whether couple, business or individual should be considered carefully before entering into. All partnerships should be based on trust and understanding of one another. I mentioned ducks a few paragraphs ago and by this I refer to the elements that should be considered before teaming up. Each party should reflect upon if the others brand, ethos and service levels meet their own. Companies that partner should share values and organisational objectives / goals, otherwise the partnership is likely not to be as beneficial as you may hope and may even create
I shall leave you all this month with my final comments, I have always been a big advocate of choosing the right recruitment partner whether client or candidate your consultant is the one championing you so make sure you choose wisely.
