In Brief Fewer School Days Skipped Children in Jersey are missing less school than at any time in the past six years. Attendance rates for the last academic year were at 95% across primary and secondary schools. After illness, family holidays are the next most common reason for kids not being in class – accounting for more than a fifth of primary school absences. Education Minister Deputy Rod Bryans says not all of them were with prior consent. But he says parents do seem to be getting the message about unauthorised absences.

Undersea Power Cable Recovered The last few kilometres of the decommissioned supply link have been lifted from the seabed. The next phase for the £40 million project to lay a new cable is now getting underway, with inshore inspections in Jersey and France. The cable has been made in Italy and, after further tests, should be ready to lay this summer. Jersey Electricity says it can be done more quickly than the three months it took to lay the Normandie 3 link, and won’t require any roadworks.

£25m States Underspend Jersey’s States departments underspent by £25 million on last year’s budgets. That is on top of the 2% they each needed to save last year. Most of the surplus cash (£19m) is being diverted to priority areas. Treasury Minister Senator Alan Maclean says £6 million will be given to the long-term care fund. Health, sport and digital services are among the other projects that will benefit from the unspent money. £6 million will be returned to the States’ current account.

‘Park Lane to Park Bench’ To celebrate the 5th anniversary of the Sanctuary Trust, the men’s shelter, they are holding an art and photography exhibition at Fort Regent from 5th - 27th May. The exhibition, titled ‘Park Lane to Park Bench’ has been put together as a reminder that homelessness is an issue on our island, and that it can happen to anyone. All of the artwork has been produced by local artists, making it an opportunity to appreciate the great talents of our fellow islanders, and a chance to get an insight into the lives of those who are in the unfortunate position of having lost their home. Sanctuary Trust works to help men on the island who have fallen on hard times. Over the past 5 years, they have helped over 180 men who have found themselves without a home. They provide more than just accommodation and food by offering support, advice, fellowship and perhaps above all, hope.

Proud of You campaign wins major award The 2015 eco active Proud of You (for picking up my poo) campaign has won a major award. The Proud of You team picked up the National Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM) Award for Sustainability and CSR. The Proud of You campaign ran for the summer months of 2015. Island residents responded to its message and put in a huge effort to rid the Island of dog mess. The campaign is currently being rolled out again as summer approaches. Eco active is part of the Department for the Environment, and works with organisations across Jersey to help them operate more sustainably. Programme manager, Jane Burns, said “We’re extremely proud to have had our campaign recognised at a national level. The difference it made around the Island last summer was enormous. Some hotspots saw

an 88% reduction in the amount of dog mess. Sadly it is one of those issues that requires continual ‘nagging’ so we are all set to launch again this year. “One of the reasons the campaign was so successful was that it was a team effort – a lot of people and organisations

were involved. It’s down to this extensive team work that the Department of the Environment has achieved this special accolade.” The Minister for the Environment, Deputy Steve Luce, said “This is an example of how a

small-budget campaign can make a tangible difference. ‘Proud of You’ captured the community’s imagination in a humorous way, and encouraged people to change their behaviour to improve Jersey’s beautiful environment for all of us.”

Water quality update Results from tests on a range of boreholes across Jersey have shown that ground water supplies tested continue to be within the World Health Organization-based standard limits. Extra tests are being carried out on surface and ground water sources following the detection of higher than expected levels of pesticides in ground and surface water in February and March. These were Oxadixyl, withdrawn in 2003, and Metribuzin and Linuron (currently used by the farming industry). The Environment Department has taken 76 borehole samples across Jersey since 14 March and sent them to a UK laboratory for testing. 66 results have come back and at least 20 more samples are likely to be carried out. Jersey Water is sampling for pesticides weekly rather than every six weeks. Levels of Oxadixyl have largely remained stable across the Island but have increased in Val de la Mare due to less dilution caused by lower rainfall. Linuron continues to be found in a number of surface water streams. Recent tests have also detected other chemicals routinely used by growers; these were Azoxystrobin, Ethoprophos and one incidence of Tebuconazole. Two other chemicals were also detected. Carbendazim is normally used for amenity grass, and Diuron, a weedkiller, may have been due to an individual

householder at the north end of St Peter’s Valley spraying weeds with an out-of-date product on their drive/tennis court or other hard standing. Val de la Mare reservoir is still not currently being used by Jersey Water. The company is selecting and blending water resources to manage the concentration in the mains water supply and keep it within drinking water limits, which means public mains water supplies remain clean and safe. The Environment Minister, Deputy Steve Luce, said the new figures showed some cause for cautious optimism. “I’m pleased to see that ground water tests are continuing to show that boreholes

are within the precautionary health limit. “Recent meetings with farmers indicate they’re taking their responsibilities seriously and we’re continuing to meet to ensure this remains the case. We’ll also be continuing to raise public awareness more widely about the impact on our environment of using chemicals carelessly. “I’d like to encourage people to hand in any chemicals used in private gardens that they think may be out of date or banned – without fear of prosecution – to reduce the risk of polluting local water supplies because this is clearly a wider problem and we need to get on top of it.”

In particular those from small enterprises and start-up ventures.

Durrell welcomes a new baby to the Island Bat Roost Durrell is celebrating the ﬂutter of baby bat wings as a new baby Livingstone’s fruit bat has been born at the Wildlife Park. Arriving in early March the new addition is the second baby born to Mum Bazimini. The pup was the first Livingstone’s Fruit bat to be born in 2016 across the worldwide captive population. Another was born just a day later at Bristol Zoo, which is one of just two additional institutions that hold this species in captivity. Livingstone’s fruit bat mothers give birth to a single infant after a gestation period estimated to be around five months. A low birth rate and the fact that the species reproduce quite slowly add to the pressures affecting this beautiful mammal which is listed on the IUCN Red list as Endangered. Edward Bell, Mammal Keeper at

Durrell said, “This latest birth is another example of how important the research and continued refinement of the husbandry practices here at Durrell are for this, the rarest mammal species on site." The mother and infant bond in bats is very strong and within Durrell’s Island Bat Durrell infants remain with their mothers for the first few months, even as the mother flies and feeds. They are nursed during this period, but as they grow and become more cumbersome the mothers begin to 'park' them in creches with infants from other mothers. Fruit bats play an important role in the regeneration of tropical forests, acting as both pollinators and seed dispersers for many plants. Livingstone's fruit bats are therefore vital to the health of the forest of the two islands

on which wild populations are found, Anjouan and Moheli in the Comoros archipelago. Sadly there are thought to be less than 1,000 of these giant bats left in the wild. The first Livingstone's bats arrived at Durrell in 1992, at which point the species had never before been kept in captivity. Today the colony stands at 44 and this captive population helps to ensure that there is a safety net population for the species. The human population of the Comoros is increasing at an exponential rate, and the islands now have the fastest rate of deforestation in the world. Durrell is working closely with local organisation and communities to protect the Comorian forests, as well as maintaining a breeding population of Livingstone’s fruit bat.

Pan-Island health opportunities Following discussions between the Chief Ministers and Health Ministers of both Guernsey and Jersey last month, the islands have agreed to explore the opportunities presented by working more collaboratively, as both islands seek to transform their provision of health services. Although at different stages, both islands are going through a similar reform of public services. Exploring opportunities together is a logical step in developing the reform programmes of each island, recognising how working together collaboratively on areas of common interest can benefit both. Jersey’s Minister for Health and Social Services, Senator Andrew Green said "Guernsey and

Jersey already work together successfully in a number of areas and it has long been understood that there are many advantages of doing so. We can see a real opportunity to take things one step further in the transformation of the future provision of our health services. Where there is common ground, it’s logical to share each other’s experience and actively work together so we make sure that we are able to collaborate when the opportunity arises and make efficiency savings where we can." Guernsey’s Minister for Health and Social Services, Deputy Paul Luxon added "This is a natural and sensible step to take in light of the public service reform programmes of both islands. We have shared demographic

challenges and our geography and close proximity give us an opportunity to work closely together on areas of common interest and to maximise the opportunities this gives us." Initially, there are three areas where the islands will explore efficiency opportunities in their health service provision. These are: procurement – both the commissioning of services and the procurement of general goods; care commission regulation; and the broader considerations and approaches to Public Health arrangements. Regular meetings will now be set up between the two islands to explore and progress these areas in more detail.

Car Ban At Charing Cross A busy part of town will be shut to traffic this summer. The test is to see if the main gateway to the high street will be safer and more attractive if it is car-free The Infrastructure department wants to see what effect banning traffic from going from Broad Street to Sand Street will have. The trial will start on 1st June.

If approved the academy would be built on land owned by the Jersey Rugby Club. Former professional rugby player and coach Ben Harvey is behind the plans for the academy which he says will be one of the best in Europe. He said all school children would have free access to the facility during the day and it would help develop the performance of all children. Mr Harvey said it would employ more than 20 people and should be open in 2017. It will support and train children as young as 12 all the way

through to elite athletes in a variety of sports from rugby players to sailors and surfers. Mr Harvey has worked with a small group of entrepreneurs on the scheme, which will now be considered by the States planning department. He said: "It will have whatever you need to train a multitude of sports. We have to make sure it is kitted out accordingly to deliver to every sport. "It is a support services. There will be no sport from here, we will have sports science, sport medicine and athletic development." It will be used by schools, junior athletes and Jersey's elite senior athletes, but members

of the public will also be able to pay to join. Bill Dempsey, chairman of the Jersey Rugby Club said: "We have no direct involvement. They will use the land and we will get a ground rent for the

lease, a better car park for match days and the use of the facility." Jersey Rugby Club Academy already has about 600 youth players signed up and this would support them.

Jersey abuse victim: Abuse should be held accountable A woman has told the Royal Court trial of her alleged abuser that he should be held accountable for what he did. Nicholas Price Marvin, 51, of Old St John's Road, St Helier, denies 12 charges of sexual abuse. The woman is named as a victim in two of a total of 12 charges faced by Mr Marvin dating back to the 1990s. She told Jersey's Royal Court that she rejected

defence suggestions that Marvin's actions were innocent or inadvertent.

Falles Motor Group exhibition for 90th anniversary One of Jersey’s oldest motoring businesses is celebrating its 90th anniversary this year. Family owned Falles Motor Group (Falles), which first started trading in 1926, operates a number of businesses in the Channel Islands, employing around 50 people. & Engineering Works’ in 1926 from small workshop premises in Norcott Road, St. Saviour. After a brief closure during the German occupation, Falles started expanding with the arrival of Helier’s father, John Falle, in 1952. Within ten years the newly formed ‘Falles Hire Cars’ had a fleet of between 400 to 500 hire cars, operating out of premises from Bagot Road and Falles Airport Garage in St. Brelade. At its peak the company employed over 150 permanent and part-time staff during the tourism season. Falles sold its hire car division in 2003 as a result of falling visitor numbers and refocused its attention on improving the profitability of its existing businesses. ‘I am very proud of the dedicated

and loyal team of people who work for the company, many of whom have been with us for 10, 20 and even 30 plus years. Licensing extension for Queen’s birthday To mark the Queen’s oﬃcial 90th birthday, the Assistant Minister for Economic Development, Tourism, Sport and Culture, Connétable Steve Pallett, is proposing to temporarily extend opening hours for pubs and bars on 10 and 11 June 2016. The temporary amendment to the Licensing (Jersey) Law 1974 would allow pubs and bars to continue serving customers until 1am on the evenings of Friday 10 and Saturday 11 June 2016. This

would align Jersey with England and Wales, where the same temporary extension has already been adopted. The Assistant Minister will bring Regulations to the States to temporarily amend the Licensing Law to allow Category 1 (Taverners) licensed premises to serve alcohol until 1am on the nights in question. The proposed extension to opening hours will not affect other categories of premises covered by the Licensing

Law, such as restaurants and nightclubs, which already have permitted opening times running up to or beyond 1am. Off-licences will also remain unaffected by the Regulations. Weather radar dome Israeli honour for woman looking for home The weather radar dome at La Moye will be replaced in June and the recycling team in the Department for Infrastructure and the Meteorological Department want to find it a new home.

This is a great example of how to see waste as a resource and we are delighted that there is an opportunity to explore the reuse options."

The dome is made from approximately 48 GRP (glass reinforced plastic) connecting panels and is still in excellent condition. The departments are asking for expressions of interest from anyone who can re-use it in a way that benefits the community. A woman who risked her life by hiding a Jewish friend from the Nazis during World War Two has been honoured by the state of Israel. Dorothea Weber, from Jersey, hid Hedwig Bercu who was being hunted by the Germans in the Nazi-controlled island. The pair survived for 18 months on her rations and by fishing at night.

She has been recognised as one of the Righteous Among the Nations by the Yad Vashem, Israel's official memorial to the victims of the Holocaust. Before the German occupation, which started on 30 June 1940, fewer than 100 Jews lived in the Channel Islands and most left before it began. In 1942 three Jewish women from Guernsey were deported to France and were later interned, with all three dying in Auschwitz's gas chambers. Hedwig Bercu was one of only a handful of registered Jews in Jersey and went into hiding after being reported for smuggling petrol coupons. She faked her suicide at St Aubin's Bay leaving a note and a pile of clothes on the beach, however, the German authorities were not convinced and continued to search for her.

Cambridge University academic Gilly Carr has campaigned for Dorothea Weber's bravery to be recognised and said she was "thrilled" and the news was "great for Jersey". Although his house at 45 Roseville Street no longer exists, a plaque was unveiled on the site to celebrate his remarkable story.

Jon Carter, director of Jersey Heritage, said he hoped they could do something similar to mark Dorothea's actions. He praised the work of Dr Carr and other academics as making a "significant change" in the occupation story. He said it was great for "a lot of untold stories like this one" to be brought into the public eye.

Folklore returns Following the successful return of Folklore to Jersey’s event calendar, attracting an audience of just over 4,000 in 2015 the organisers are delighted to reveal this year’s Main Stage line up, headlined by folk-rock heroes Levellers. Also on the bill are seminal indie band The Charlatans, along with a diverse array of some of the hottest acts in ska, dub, reggae, folk and rock music. Headlining FOLKLORE 2016 on Sunday 12th June, Levellers are one of the best loved bands to emerge from the British Isles, their blend of punk and traditional English folk influences, and commitment to leftwing politics have earned them a devoted following since their formation in Brighton in 1988. Best known for their anthemic hits ‘What A Beautiful Day’, ‘Carry Me’ and ‘The Boatmen’, the Levellers are a regular fixture at Glastonbury and in 2003 formed their own festival, Beautiful Days in Devon. They are joined on the Main Stage line up by a band that have played a pivotal role in shaping the landscape of British guitar music, indie icons The Charlatans. The band formed in 1989 and have created some of the most memorable indie classics of the past thirty years, including the mega hit ‘The Only One I Know’, ‘Weirdo’, ‘One To Another’ and ‘Just When You’re Thinking Things Over’, and since their UK Number One debut album Some Friendly in 1990 they have gone on to release a further eleven studio albums. Their creative potency remains after 27 years together as a band,

and we can’t wait to welcome them to Folklore. 10 minutes with Liam McGeary Mixed Martial Arts World Champion, Liam McGeary has spent the last several weeks travelling up and down the British Isles as part of an extensive UK tour, culminating in an extended stay in Jersey. A spiritual home for McGeary, Jersey holds a special place in his fighting history and has been an important port of call for his development as an elite martial artist, as well as a more focused man. We caught up with him just before he left... The last time you walked to the Bellator cage to compete you had a big, gold belt around your waist. What was that feeling like compared to the previous times you’ve entered a fight? I was focused on what I had to do. I wasn’t really focused on being a Champion, so nothing really felt different. I never really feel different about a fight, I know I’m going in there to do a job. When I was walking to that cage I just had it in my head that I was going to war. How has becoming World Champion changed your life? Are you having more fun in the sport, or is it more added responsibility? Unfortunately I have been injured much of the time I’ve been Champion, but I have enjoyed heading out to all the fight shows, the fan expos, so they (Bellator MMA) have kept me really busy with that. So yeah, I am in that aspect really enjoying it. There’s more interviews, there’s more press, but I am having more fun. For many, becoming World Champion would be the icing on the cake for their career. You

Building Natural Confidence By Pamela Pitcher My point as a transformational coach is to make a profound difference in the lives of others. It took me years to become confidently content after walking down many paths and my aim is to shorten that timeline for others so they can go forward living a fulfilling life, confidently. I believe that everybody comes into this world feeling confident. Over time, through life’s experiences some of us lose our confidence along the way. Between the ages of 0 and 7, sometimes referred to as the imprint period, we absorb the behavioural patterns of our parents or caregivers. If our parents are self-assured and confident, we learn to be that way. On the other hand, if our parents lack self-esteem and are insecure, we may take on those qualities. Think of it this way, if our parents speak English, English will become our first language. If our parents are Mandarin speakers, then we will speak Mandarin. There is no right or wrong in this; it’s simply

the way we learn when we are young, modelling the ways of our caregivers. As we grow older, we will begin to mix with others through school, work and social activities. We then take on the qualities of others beyond our family. We learn of others’ ways through television, media, books and travel. All of these factors affect our general level of confidence, often unconsciously. If I’m a young sapling tree and I’m planted where the sun shines and there are plenty of nutrients in the soil and I receive adequate water then I will flourish. If I am planted in the shade in clay soil that is allowed to dry out too often, I will languish. And then what happens to either tree if someone comes along and cuts off their branches or relocates them to a dark, shady area? Just like the trees, external factors have a knock on effect in our mind. With each emotional knock we receive, our confidence

waivers. Most people who come to me for help are in a transition that has knocked the wind out of their sails. Births, deaths, divorce, moving house or country, new jobs, being made redundant are examples of life transitions that can stop us in our tracks leaving us feeling lost, timid, unsure and doubtful. If we’ve had a lot of negativity in our lives, we can develop very negative thinking. We may come to believe that we are not good enough. It is widely known that if we think we can do something, we will do it and if we think we can’t, there is no way that we will. Therefore, we need to change our way of thinking. Point being is that confidence begins with the quality of our thoughts. The good news is that we can change our thinking and grow confidence. I did and I can show you how. Watercress Raw watercress adds a peppery yet smooth edge to dishes and is highly nutritious. Use it in salads in place of the ubiquitous rocket, or try a watercress and Marmite sandwich. It is a classic soup ingredient and when cooked has a milder flavour. It's also great in juices. Watercress is rich in vitamin C, calcium, iron and folic acid. It is a cruciferous plant containing anti-cancer phytochemicals such as beta-carotene and flavonoids.

Sea Trout The wild sea trout, or salmon trout, bears little resemblance to the inexpensive but unexceptional farmed trout sold in supermarkets. Its time spent at sea means that it is closer to wild salmon in colour, flavour and texture but with a less prohibitive price. Sea trout is a good source of omega-3 essential fatty acids, which are linked with reduced risk of heart disease and some cancers.

Spring Chicken Stew Most people think of stew as a warm, winter meal, and whilst this is true in most cases, this stew is light and fresh thanks to the spring onion, lemon and thyme - perfect for Spring! Ingredients • 4 Large potatoes, peeled and cubed • 1 large onion, finely chopped • 3 carrots, peeled and chopped • green beans • spring onion • 1 tbsp. cornflour • 2 garlic cloves, minced • zest of one lemon • 2 teaspoons thyme • 1/2 teaspoon salt • 1/4 teaspoon pepper • 4 chicken breasts, cut

into pieces • Chicken stock Directions 1. Put all of the veg in the slow cooker. Sprinkle with flour, garlic, lemon peel, thyme, salt and pepper; toss to coat. Add the chicken and the stock. 2. Cook on low 7-9 hours. Serve with crusty bread.

Stuﬀed Peppers Ingredients • 100g quinoa • 100g Chorizo • Handful of mushroom • 2 garlic gloves, chopped • 1 small onion • Handful of grated cheddar • 4 Large Peppers Directions 1. Pre-heat the oven to 200C. 2. Cook the quinoa per packet instructions and fry off the onion, chooped garlic, chorizo and mushroom and set aside.

4. Meanwhile, Cut the tops off the peppers and remove the centre and seeds. 5. Once the quinoa is cooked through, drain any excess water and mix into the onion, garlic, chorizo and mushrooms. Spoon into the peppers. 6. Add a sprinkle of grated cheese onto each pepper and cook in the oven for 10 minutes. Serve with boiled potatoes.

The National Trust for Jersey, in association with Ashburton Investments, will once again be holding its annual Sunset Concerts at Grantez, St Ouen over the midsummer weekend on Friday 24 and Saturday 25 June 2016. The family friendly open-air concerts, which Ashburton Investments has sponsored for eight consecutive years, have become firm fixtures in the summer calendar and are held over two evenings in the beautiful natural amphitheatre at Grantez as the sun sets over St Ouen’s Bay. The live music events regularly showcase local artists as well as acts from the UK and further afield and are free with a £5 charge per car for on-site parking which goes towards the National Trust for Jersey’s Coastline Campaign. Gates open from

5:30pm with performances starting at 7:15pm. Attendees are invited to bring a picnic and enjoy eating al fresco before the concerts. This year the concert opens on Friday evening with local bands ‘The Word on the Street’ and ‘Little Black Dress’. A 10-piece ensemble with their roots in New Orleans brass tradition, ‘The Word on the Street’ delivers funk, pop and Rhythm & Blues and is influenced by the likes of Trombone Shorty, The Young Blood Brass Band and the Soul Rebels. Crispy filo tart with seasonal veg We haven’t got around to trying this out just yet, but we still wanted to share it! This light, zesty tart is packed with asparagus, courgette, herbs and feta. Serves 6 - 8 Ingredients • 3 tbsp olive or rapeseed oil • 6-8 sheets filo pastry • 50g dried breadcrumb • 100g asparagus • 2 courgette • 6 large egg • zest 2 lemons • Small handful parsley, mint or basil • 200g crème fraîche • 200g block feta cheese, crumbled • Handful small salad leaves or herbs Directions 1. Heat oven to 180C/160C fan/gas 4 and pop in a baking sheet to heat up. Use a little of the oil to lightly grease an 18 x 25cm tart tin (ours was 3cm deep). Line the tin with a few strips of baking parchment – this will help you to lift out the tart later. 2. Unfold the pastry, but keep it covered with a damp tea towel as you work to prevent it from drying out. Taking 1

sheet at a time, brush each piece well with oil, then use to line your tart tin, leaving a little pastry hanging over the edges. Sprinkle a thin layer of breadcrumbs between each layer of pastry as you go – this will help to keep the pastry crisp. When you get to the final layer, brush with a little extra oil and scrunch the edges together to create a pretty border. 3. Toss the asparagus and courgettes with seasoning and the remaining oil and tip onto a baking tray. Place the pastry case on the top shelf of the oven, with the veg on the shelf below and cook for 10 mins. 4. Remove the veg from the oven. Brush the tart with a little beaten egg and bake for a further 5 mins until the pastry is golden brown and crunchy. 5. Whisk the remaining egg with the lemon zest, herbs, crème fraîche and seasoning. Lay half the veg in the bottom of the pastry case and add half the feta. Pour over the egg mixture, then top with the remaining veg and feta. Bake for 40 mins until the filling has set. Remove from the oven and leave to cool. Serve with a grinding of black pepper and scattered with small salad leaves or herbs, if you like.

A SAD TALE... By Stephen Cohu I am beginning to wonder if there is anyone out there who reads and inwardly digests a single word that I write. Despite having written advisory articles on house clearances and making sure you know what you have by getting it checked out before you chuck it, every day hundreds or even thousands of pounds worth of valuable items are taken to Bellozanne for destruction. Having had a rather pleasant holiday in Madeira with my wife and children, I returned to undertake the clearance of a modest three bedroom terraced house where the people had called me in to sensibly check the remaining contents of the house for items of value. On my first visit to the property in November last year we arrived just before the bin men were about to take nineteen black sacks of “rubbish” from the front garden. They were hurriedly loaded into the car and on examination were found to contain Red Cross letters from the Occupation, old postcard albums, photographs and all sorts of other interesting ephemera. Even though the items had been put out we still paid the rather surprised householder for what we could use. An hour later this whole irreplaceable collection would have gone into the La Collette incinerator.

HOW TO LOSE £1000 It was during the clearance of this property I took a couple of dustbins full of worthless china and glass up to Bellozanne to put in the rubble and hard-core skip. As I was lifting a load into the trailer I noticed the rather tragic sight of the pictured dish smashed into numerous small pieces. I recovered as many pieces as possible but many

had slipped down amongst the other rubble.

So whoever threw this dish into the skip destroyed a three hundred year old Dutch delft lobed charger worth £1000. I hope the offender reads this and to those of you who have not yet made this mistake, learn from this expensive error. If I discovered the remains

of this on one of my fairly infrequent visits to Bellozanne can you imagine how many times it happens every year? Old china, old paperwork, old rugs and carpets, old furniture gets thrown away every day, fortunes going up in smoke or into landfill. On another recent visit to the tip, a nineteenth century Persian rug worth perhaps £300 to £400 languished on the pile of rubbish, tantalisingly just out of reach. I thought about going to

fetch a fishing rod and attempt to hook this desirable item out of the junk but the JCB crusher was already moving in and I was resigned to letting it go. Recently I heard about a brass Nuremburg Alms dish from the 16th/ 17th century that had been chucked into the metal skip, recovered and subsequently sold for about £800. I know that people will say that I am an expert therefore I know what to keep and what to chuck and that they are not so they can’t be blamed for taking it to

the dump. Surely that is exactly the point- if you don’t know then get it checked out! If not you will end up destroying a dish that had survived 300 years undamaged and throw away £1000. I am just sorry that I did not get there in between the dish going into the trailer and the person emptying a load of random granite blocks onto it and smashing it to tiny pieces. Then I would be £1000 better off, thank you very much! Enough said, end of sad tale.

Installing a new chimney Installing a new chimney requires professional advice. Every installation is different so Home Fires Jersey offer you a full technical service including layout drawings for the installation of new chimneys for use with stoves, boilers or open fires as well as large inglenook fireplaces. Twin wall ﬂue systems (Stainless or Black) Twin wall flue is a metal tube (flue) insulated with approx. an inch of insulation (two layers of stainless steel with insulation in between). The insulation is necessary to keep the gases hot. Were you to use non-insulated flue pipe for the whole of your chimney then the gases would likely cool too much and start to slow rather than rise – this causing the smoke underneath to “dam” forcing the smoke below to exit out of the vents in your stove instead of the top of your chimney.

Punctuality - Who Cares!? According to recent figures, around 16% of us are late for work at least once every week. Estimates suggest that in our private lives this statistic is double! Is it really true that a third of us are often late? Well, I can only sensibly relay my personal experiences and I would say “Yes, a good third of us are often late”.

Now to put some perspective on this - I ‘enjoyed’ a fairly rigorous military upbringing including 8 years in a military academy so no surprise that I am very conscious of “timing” but maybe this also makes me well placed to comment on it? Maybe not! Let’s first get the subject of being “late for work” to one side. It’s as old as the hills and everyone turns up late some time for any number of valid and sometimes terrible reasons too. We should always try to be on time for work but stuff happens right?

Just for fun here are some excuses I have encountered since 1979: • I forgot to wind my alarm clock • My car indicator light on the right-hand side was broken so I had to get to work by making left turns only • I thought it was Saturday • I lost my watch • The dog was asleep on my car keys and I just couldn’t bring myself to move her • I am not really late. For me this is early • My battery died on my mobile so my alarm didn’t go off • I was just too tired I am sure I have a migraine Of course everyone knows the old ‘punctured tyre’ excuse. I have always felt really sorry for the people to whom this actually happened because the chances of them ever being believed will have been zero. What’s funnier is that some of the unfortunate victims of “on-the-road” issues like this will know that the

puncture excuse is not usually taken seriously and so they will make up something else perhaps more believable! Then they get caught-out lying! So that’s work but on to lateness generally – we seem to fall into four camps roughly: A. Those who want to be punctual and expect punctuality. B. Those that don’t care much either way. C. Those who are rarely punctual but expect others to be on time! D. Those who are punctual but don’t mind waiting for others at all. Do you know which camp you’re in? If you don’t, then ask a friend - don’t guess. I know which camp I am in and I know which camp contains the least number of people! It is interesting though, at least to me, because it is strangely difficult to change behaviours either those of oneself or of others. I would be dreadfully disappointed in

myself if I let someone down by having them wait for me. I just couldn’t look at my watch and note the time I need to leave for the meeting but then deliberately let it go by and knowingly turn up late without a care. Conversely (I assume) someone from Camp B couldn’t easily be encouraged turn up on time? I did try to alleviate a punctuality situation I suffered with a loved one who was always between 20 and 30 minutes late without fail so I got into the habit of giving them an appointment time 30 minutes earlier than needed. This meant that subsequently they typically turned up just on time and this worked for ages until … on one occasion by accident they appeared at the actual stated time and therefore appeared 30 minutes early! Their obvious indignation and frustration over being duped for so long upset them greatly. (Unbelievable!) The rest of the family remained quietly amused however, from then on the 30 minute measure was always taken into account and my system never worked again: It goes like this if you’re not sure: Actual appointment time is 10; told them 9.30; they now know that means 10 so 10.30 to10.45 will do and they now always an hour late instead! ….Arrgghh!

I am one of those sad people who cannot handle tardiness anywhere and so camp A is where I stay. I say this but it isn’t entirely true because I often visit France and there they have a Camp E. Where E stands for “Everything-goes”! You can do whatever you need to do there whenever you like. “Ça ne fait rien” as they say and this is why they live so much longer than us! Just for clarity then, and I do hope I don’t speak for too many here: having to wait for someone who is late for an appointment with me imposes a physical stress and pain upon me that goes like this in my head:

I hate you with a passion and I can never forgive you for this outrage!” And later you receive an email from your guest saying “Oh no! So sorry! I must have just missed you. I got there at 11.21 by my watch. What rotten luck. I’ll call to rearrange”

Translated - for me this really means “Please accept this outright lie because you know I don’t possess a watch and I was never even close to the venue; ever. I was having a great conversation with someone else miles away who I like and respect so much more than I do you and so my last meeting ran over by 45 minutes. I knew you would have been well gone by then so there was no point in me getting in touch. I am not sorry in the slightest and it had nothing to do with luck whatsoever, it just didn’t matter enough to me. Please don’t rely on me to rearrange, that would be pointless as well as stupid.” I imagine all this only helps to demonstrate to you just how ill I really am! On the other-hand some of you might feel the same?

Tax agreement signed with UAE The Government of Jersey has signed a double tax agreement (DTA) with the United Arab Emirates in Dubai. The DTA was signed for Jersey by Senator Ian Gorst, Chief Minister, and for the United Arab Emirates by Obaid Humaid Al Tayer, Minister of State for Financial Affairs. Senator Gorst said "The signing of the DTA will further strengthen the extremely good relationship we have with the Emirati Government. I am delighted to have been able to sign the agreement in the Emirates and to have had the opportunity to personally convey to the Minister the importance we attach to our commitment to a future relationship." The DTA is the latest in a series of agreements between Jersey and the UAE on financial issues. The Jersey Finance regional office was established in the UAE in March 2011, and earlier this year, the Jersey Financial Services Commission signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Financial Services Regulatory Authority of the Abu Dhabi Global Market. Besides the growing relationship between the UAE and Jersey in financial services, the Island has recently begun exporting foodstuffs to the Emirates, including Jersey Royals and oysters.
