In Brief
Domino’s Pizza for St Saviour’s Road The former Graham Hotel on St Saviour’s Road is to become a Domino’s Pizza restaurant and takeaway. The premises were previously in use as a bar and restaurant but have been vacant for approximately five years. The Planning Applications Committee agreed the change of use to include a takeaway. A planning department report noted objections from the Parish of St Helier and Environmental Health on grounds of traffic and noise, but also welcomed the building being used again, in line with an Island Plan objective for the regeneration of the north of St Helier.
#runforareason - inspire others to take part
Jersey's efforts to crack down on money laundering have been praised by a European Council watchdog. Moneyval, the body which examines jurisdictions' compliance with international laws, said the island had a "mature and sophisticated regime". However, it did call for moves including more investigations into moneylaundering. The report also suggested more powers for authorities to be able to confiscate assets from offenders. Moneyval found Jersey was cooperative with other jurisdictions, and had a robust system in place to deal with any breaches of the law.
Richard Ingle, chief executive officer at Standard Chartered in Jersey, added: ‘There are so many reasons why people decide to take on a marathon, from raising money for personal causes through to overcoming hardship or simply wanting to take on a new challenge. Our #runforareason campaign aims to capture the essence of what drives people to enter the Standard Chartered Jersey Marathon, and will hopefully inspire others to sign up. Chris’ story is an inspiration to us all, and we wish him the best of luck with his training and fundraising in the run up to the marathon.’
The aim is to inspire others to consider taking on the challenge and in turn raise as much money as possible for the event’s charity partners, Seeing is Believing and Brig-y-Don Children’s Charity. A cancer survivor from Jersey, Chris Fancourt, 37, is one such participant preparing to #runforareason, raising funds for Teenage Cancer Trust. Chris, a teacher at Samarès Primary School, was diagnosed with a rare form of PNET abdominal cancer in September 1999 and was given a 20-30 per cent chance of surviving treatment. After five operations and several months of chemotherapy, he was given the all clear and is now preparing to run his first ever marathon in fancy dress to celebrate 15 years’ cancer free in 2016. ‘Having been at such a low point during my treatment, where even getting out of bed was an

ordeal, there were times when walking out of Southampton hospital into a taxi was almost beyond me,’ said Mr Fancourt. ‘At the time I didn’t foresee a future, let alone being here today preparing to run my first ever marathon. As the years
ticked by, I became stronger and my love for running grew. Here I am in 2016 with a hundred miles in my legs since the start of the year. I’m slowly gearing up to what will be a tough challenge, but one which I hope will raise a lot of money for Teenage Cancer Trust – a
Jersey States impose 1% pay rise on teachers Teachers' unions in Jersey have described a new 1% pay deal as "disappointing" saying it will make teacher recruitment harder. The deal, imposed on teachers by the States Employment Board follows no increase in 2015. An NASUWT spokesman said: "Such a minimal award will do nothing to assist in the retention and recruitment of high quality teachers". The deal threatened standards and would "impact negatively on Jersey for many years to come". Andy Woolley, NUT regional
secretary for the South West, said the cost of living and accommodation in Jersey was particularly high. He said: "We believe that previous pay restraint has already had an impact on the number of people applying for posts on the island and this latest imposition can only make that worse. "The island retains its desire not to levy taxation on various parts of the financial sector. "We do not believe public sector workers should bear the brunt of a financial crisis that is not of their making."
This year’s Standard Chartered Jersey Marathon takes place on Sunday 2nd October. Online entry is open at www.jerseymarathon.com. To share your stories, tweet @ Jersey_Marathon using the hashtag #runforareason or go to www.facebook.com/ Jerseymarathon.

Students team up with Radisson Blu to help protect Jersey’s coastline Forty students from Hautlieu and St John’s Primary School recently joined forces with employees from Radisson Blu to clean up an area of St Aubin’s Bay, before being rewarded for their efforts with a complimentary lunch provided by the hotel. Christopher Peach, general manager of Radisson Blu, added: ‘Jersey’s stunning coastline is one of the island’s best assets and it must be protected. As a hotel operating so close to our coastline, we take our responsibility to protect and preserve our pristine beach very seriously, and we’re extremely grateful to the students for their enthusiastic support.’ Tiani Jaffrelot and Imogen Taylor, Year 12 students from Hautlieu School, added: ‘We were given this opportunity as a result of the CAS component of the international baccalaureate course, which requires a certain amount of service to the community. Events such as this are brilliant for educating younger
generations about the disturbing quantity of litter that is washed up on Jersey’s shores. The aim was to make them more aware of where their rubbish could end up if it isn’t disposed of properly. The issue is one of a global scale but dealing with it locally is a massive step in the right direction.’
25 homes will replace Gorey hotel 25 new homes are to be built on the site of the Old Court House Hotel in Gorey, following Planning Applications Committee approval. Dandara applied to build 18 apartments and seven houses on the site at La Rue a Don, Grouville. The houses will be built in a traditional style and will face Old Road, in the heart of Gorey Village. The apartments will be in a larger, more contemporary building central to the site. Parking will be where the current hotel carpark is and a new pedestrian route will be created through the site linking Old Road with Grouville Common. There were five letters of objection and one letter of support for the development. The committee asked for a reduction in the size of one of the homes. In making its decision, members balanced the impact of the development on neighbours, against the need to provide more homes within the built up area.
In the afternoon, the students continued the fun by spending the afternoon with Jersey Seasearch, a project based, marine species diving and snorkelling study group which gathers data on species and habitats that are rare, threatened or have an invasive presence in Jersey’s waters.

Landlords are reminded of the deposit scheme More than £1.75 million in deposits have been securely placed in the States’ approved tenants deposit scheme which came into force on 2 November 2015. Landlords and letting agents are being reminded to protect their tenants’ deposits in the new mydeposits Jersey tenancy deposit scheme. Under the new law, all landlords and agents that take a deposit from their tenant on a new, renewed or varied tenancy agreement must transfer the money to mydeposits within 30 working days of receiving it. Landlords and agents cannot avoid the Law by taking rent in advance instead of a deposit, and those who fail to comply with the Law will be investigated and could be fined up to £2,000. Minister for Housing, Deputy Anne Pryke said “The tenancy deposit scheme is in place to safeguard deposits for the length of a tenancy. It’s important that both landlords and tenants are aware of these important legal requirements. “Landlords need to act responsibly when dealing with tenants’ money. It doesn’t matter what description is given to this money, if it could be returned to the tenant, it is a deposit and must be protected with mydeposits Jersey.”
The Residential Tenancy Law makes it clear that any money that a tenant pays a landlord as security for damages or to insure against the tenant not meeting their obligations is a deposit and must be paid into the tenancy deposit scheme. Rent in advance is legal but it does put landlords at risk as they would be unable to make an immediate claim for any damages caused by the tenants. They may also struggle to recover rental arrears without going through the Petty Debts Court. Eddie Hooker, mydeposits Jersey chief executive, adds "I’ve seen first-hand how deposit protection has helped to raise renting standards, it reduces unfairly withheld deposits and improves landlord - tenant relationships. “Tenants who are unsure if their deposit has been correctly protected should speak to their landlord or letting agent directly. The mydeposits Jersey website has a deposit checker for tenants to check that if their deposit has been protected.” The Strategic Housing Unit is on hand to support and advise any tenants if their deposit has not been protected with the scheme, and to investigate any breaches of the Law. Alternatively, Islanders may wish to visit the Citizens Advice Bureau if they have concerns.
Leavers form online Jersey residents moving away from the Island for three months or more now only need to complete a single online form to ensure the relevant departments are informed.
Previously anyone moving away from Jersey for three months or more (excluding students in full time education) would have needed to contact each of the above separately.
The leavers form is the latest Tell Us Once project to be brought in under the eGov programme. The aim of all Tell Us Once initiatives is to improve both customer service and efficiency across the States.
Operations Director for Social Security, Sophie Le Sueur, said “Improving customer service and efficiency is a priority for Social Security and the Tell Us Once project is a good example of the work being done in this area. We will continue to work with other departments as well as GPs and parishes to ensure we avoid duplication and that the information held is as up to date as possible. All Tell Us Once projects are subject to continual improvement based on feedback from both customers and colleagues and I’d encourage

anyone with further suggestions to contact us.” Tell Us Once has already delivered a number of new processes, bringing together different parts of the States and parishes along with the private sector (e.g. doctors) for: •new resident registration •new business registration •registration of births •registration of deaths •cease trading •leaving Jersey Tell Us Once is now in its second phase, which will continue to improve the above processes and also address the combined return (tax, Social Security and Manpower) and change of details (name, address, contact details and preferences).

and decking. This year has seen them introduce artificial grass to their customers which has proved highly popular.
The well-established garden landscaping business, which was started by and is still run by Joao Marques, has gone from strength to strength over the years, at one stage employing a staggering 17 members of staff.
Joao Marques told us how he has managed 12 years in business “The main thing that’s kept us in business all of these years is the quality of the service we have been providing.
Today, Joao Marques employs 9 well trusted, experienced professionals, own 7 vans and trucks and offer a wide range of services. As well as garden landscaping and maintenance, Joao Marques also offer general building work, paving, fencing
When we had 17 employees we lost some of the quality in our work which is why I decided to decrease the staff numbers and concentrate on the standards we provide. I also like to stay on every job and oversee the work getting done so I can ensure quality end results - the clients really appreciate this’.

International recognition for Environment's frog project Jersey’s work to save the agile frog (Rana dalmatina) has been recognised internationally. The world’s oldest and largest global environmental organisation, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), has featured a study of Jersey’s efforts to conserve our population of agile frogs in one of its recent publications, which includes case studies from around the world. Jersey is home to the only agile frog population in the British Isles. It is locally endangered and protected under the Conservation of Wildlife (Jersey) Law 2000. Its decline began in the last century, and by 1988, the only place it could still be found was L'Ouaisne Common. The cause of the frog’s decline
is thought to be loss of habitat, pollution of groundwater, water shortages and the loss of breeding ponds. The article, written by staff at the Natural Environment team at the Department of the Environment, Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust and the University of Kent, outlines their combined efforts over many years, to find ways of increasing the population. The methods used are recognised as best practice and the inclusion of the project by the IUCN allows future species recovery projects elsewhere in the world to learn from Jersey. The project involved the development of an effective conservation management programme to protect the frog’s natural habitat, and the establishment of a tadpole headstarting and release programme.
Each stage was informed by targeted monitoring and research. The project has led to an increase in the L’Ouaisne population and the successful introduction of the species in new areas of Jersey, increasing its chance of survival here in the future. The current number of breeding females is more than 100 and this has increased from fewer than 10 in the early 1990s.
Historic crane on the New North Quay saved A request by Ports of Jersey to demolish a historic crane in St Helier Harbour was rejected by the Planning Applications Committee. It confirmed its decision to refuse Ports of Jersey permission to knock down Crane 13, a listed structure on the New North Quay. The crane is the smallest, oldest and most northerly on the quay. Ports of Jersey applied to demolish it because they argue the ongoing costs of maintaining it are too high and that it poses a risk to the health and safety of port users. A planning department report referred to guidelines on listed buildings which state that the demolition of any protected buildings should be wholly
exceptional and should require the strongest justification. It also states that consent for demolition should not be expected to be given just because redevelopment is economically more attractive to the developer than repair or reuse. Committee members debated the matter extensively with representatives of Ports of Jersey during the meeting and, although refusing the application, advised that a different proposal, which provides a more positive future for the crane, might be better received. Jersey Heritage has suggested the crane could be relocated to outside the Maritime Museum, although it stated that it did not have any funds available for its restoration.

Instead, supply fibre by opting for beans and pulses puréed into a creamy dip or add to salads or sandwich fillings. Introduce brown versions of rice, pasta and bread when your child is a little older.

Gym users can touch to adjust settings and launch content with ease as the touch-screen displays look and operate like familiar tablets. For those requiring extra motivation, the new equipment
also incorporates forward motion, high definition Virtual Active footage synced to provide immersive workouts along some of the world’s most famous and beautiful paths, routes, and trails. Alternatively, users can access tips to help them reach their fitness goals through independent training via the Virtual Coaching component. Commenting on the new facilities Martin Kelly, General Manager of Grand Jersey Hotel & Spa said, “We are thrilled to have upgraded our gym which will now give members an even better exercise experience. The cutting edge equipment enables users to specifically tailor their workout to match their mood and even update their Facebook profile whilst doing so!” Continuing he said, “We are very proud of the new facilities, and have no doubt our members will
enjoy using the new equipment, which is suitable for all levels from dedicated athletes to those just looking to improve their general fitness and wellbeing.” The new-look gym also features the innovative IC7 Indoor cycle, described by Olympic gold medalist Dani King MBE, as “The most relevant, smoothest static bike I have ever trained on” along with a range of other equipment to ensure that there is something to suit each individual’s workout style. In addition to the enhancements to the cardio range, the new rubber floored weights area has also undergone a full refurbishment and now includes new free weights, power bags, a leg press and the very latest Smith machine – a piece of equipment popular with weight trainers, which can be used for a range of exercises in a safe environment.

“The unique thing about cauliflower is how it’s being cleverly converted into so many different things, from rice to pizza crust, and it’s going incognito in everything from pasta, soup and meatballs to smoothies and desserts. A real sign that the trend has gone mainstream is when I spotted a pouch of cauliflower crumbles at the grocery store – pre-shredded fresh cauliflower that’s ready to be steamed and transformed into something new.”
Could this be the end of pricking? In what could be great news for diabetics, technology and medicine have joined forces to create a new glucose monitor that does away with the invasive finger-pricking practices of the past. A team from Cardiff University’s School of Engineering has come up with a type of “wearable” that uses microwaves to track glucose levels. The monitor can be attached to your skin by way of adhesive, where it constantly keeps tabs on blood sugar levels in a completely undetectable way. The microwaves used in Cardiff University’s device are not as intense as the ones found in your standard kitchen appliance. As Professor Adrian Porch, one of the monitor’s creators, told the
BBC, “It uses microwaves, but the levels are very low. Nowhere near the levels in domestic cooking.” Professor Stephen Luzio, who carries out clinical research regarding diabetes at Swansea University’s College of Medicine, has already conducted trials with around 50 patients using the new monitor, and plans to continue these trials in the summer.

“BECOME YOUR BEST - STAY THAT WAY” Katarina Casserlov has taken the leap and set up her own business ‘KC Fitness & Coaching’. We had a coffee with her (and Tigger, her very cte Shetland Sheepdog) to find out how she’s doing things differently. Hi Katarina, congratulations on the new business! Can you tell me a little bit about your background and why you’re interested in health and fitness? I definitely think training, health and fitness should be fun - to me it is a natural part of every day living - a lifestyle choice. I have always been an outdoorsy and active person, I started jogging when I was 13. At the time my Dad thought I was a bit mad. In the years to follow I was very much engaged in training and fitness, attending numerous courses and instructing even more groups than I can remember. I was passionate about it and trained to become a PE teacher. I worked with this for a couple of years, then moved on to work in sales and marketing in the health sector. Now I have finally had the opportunity to take the steps to

To start with, my age. I have been around for a long time so I have a great understanding of all aspects of health and fitness. I also think this will help with some “slightly older” people’s confidence - I personally would hesitate to be trained by a 20 year old. I strongly believe in giving, so I will be donating part of my earnings every month to a charity of my choice in Jersey. This means that while you are struggling to meet your fitness goals you are also

Oh, very clever! What about outdoor training? My 1-on-1 personal training is tailormade to help you get the most out of your fitness programme. Not everybody is comfortable in a gym setting, for some it can help motivate them but for others it can be daunting, so I am offering outdoor training. This will include free weights, boxing, skipping, your own body weight etc... I will also be offering small-group training sessions with up to 4 people. This will allow clients to get almost all the benefits of personal training with the added bonus of the encouragement of like-minded people.

Beetroot Rosti with smoked salmon and a poached egg
Beetroot Most people have only ever tried beetroot “crinkle cut” and from a jar. If you haven’t tried fresh beet juice you may be pleasantly surprised at how subtle it is. Beetroot is high in betacarotene and folic acid. Excellent for those wanting to stay healthy as eating it regularly helps cleanse the liver and can assist in lowering incidences of heart disease.
Scallops Scallops are one of the most delicious shellfish found in Jersey waters - we love them with a sticky ginger, chilli and soy sauce. Scallops are rich in vitamin B12, calcium, iron, magnesium, potassium, zinc and copper. They are also an excellent source of protein, phosphorus and selenium.
Swiss rösti are golden brown, crisp potato pancakes. They are delicious with cold-smoked salmon or trout. Including beetroot in the mix gives it a wonderful colour and earthy sweetness. Topping them with cold-smoked salmon or trout and a lightly poached egg removes any need for a sauce. The rösti are oven-baked and can be made and cooked several hours in advance, then reheated for 5 minutes in a hot oven before serving. Ingredients • 350g potatoes • 225g raw beetroot, peeled • 2 tablespoons chopped chives
• 100g melted butter • 6 fresh eggs, poached • 300g sliced cold-smoked salmon or trout • salt and freshly ground black pepper • salmon roe and crème fraîche, to garnish Method • Preheat the oven to 200C. Coarsely grate the potatoes and the beetroot. Place in a clean tea towel or piece of muslin and squeeze out any excess liquid, then place in a bowl and mix with the chives. Season lightly with freshly ground black pepper. • Line 2 baking trays with non-
stick baking parchment and brush with olive oil. Divide the mixture into 12 and shape into 12 thin cakes - pressing down well onto the baking sheets to flatten. • Drizzle with butter and bake for 15 mins until crisp and golden.
To Serve • Pile one potato cake on top of the other, cover with coldsmoked salmon or trout and finish with a poached egg. Garnish with a spoonful of salmon roe and crème fraîche.

DIY DIYgirl From wardrobe to
TV Stand PART A (TOP AND BOTTOM SLATS)
PART B (6 LEGS)
When we moved house there was no longer any use for the canvas wardrobe, so I took it all apart whilst thinking to myself “new project!” I stood with one hand on my hip, the other scratching my head whilst looking at the pile of slats – and then it came to me. If I put that bit there, that part over here put a couple of holes there and saw those bits I should get a TV stand. Shouldn’t I?
The first thing I did was work out how high I wanted the stand to be and then cut the legs to the same size. There were already pre made holes in the legs and slats, but I had to add the holes to the edges that I had cut, this was done with the drill. I attached all the parts with the screws that were provided for the wardrobe. Voilà.
The stand was surprisingly Using a white chalk paint, easy to make, after all it is just I went over the whole TV a condensed wardrobe. stand, to give me a basic white finish. Brexit!? In or out of the EU? I know, it’s a horrible name! When I first heard it, I thought this was a new breakfast cereal a cross perhaps between Ready Brek and Weetabix? Nice!
By Vernon Breese
It is of course an abbreviation of the word “British” combined with the word “exit” to refer to the possibility (or opportunity) of Britain leaving the European Union. Presumably if they were arguing to remain part of the EU, the campaign would be called “Britin” or something equally silly. Interesting that the choice of title for this referendum should be all about exiting rather than staying in? So what is it really all about? Our soothsayers and prophets all reckon they can see the future and some may get close to good predictions but the real problem is the current state of affairs. Whether it is actually true or not, perception is that the power lies in Brussels and the money goes to Europe. Most of the UK’s population will spot a flaw in that model I think? On top of this (as I say - be it the truth or not is irrelevant) there’s
the long history of control and prohibition on what may or may not, for example, go into the old fashioned sausage we traditionally referred to as the ‘banger’! I thought the answer to that question was always: “anything”. The overriding concern appears to be the fear of the unknown – the unknown being, what will it be like ‘out of Europe’. Well it seems to me that a similar fear existed before joining when the fear would have been all about what it would be like to be ‘in Europe’? So the fear factor relates simply to the consequences of an exit both the anticipated consequences as well as the unknown. But fear alone must be a weak reason for voting to stay, surely?
didn’t know what they’d be going in so why should the unknown consequences of leaving be so powerful an argument for no change? And finally, perhaps what it might really all be about for many of the people of the United Kingdom is the perception that if they exit, then either an immediate reduction in immigration can be easily facilitated and/or, that greater control over immigration can be maintained. Talking to people and reading the papers, it would seem that many would
Add now to this the fact that many people believe it hasn’t worked well in any case and we are now in a mess, perhaps the answer is to withdraw? There are many countering arguments about whether or not we should leave but the one that seems weak is the one that says we shouldn’t leave because we don’t know what the consequences will be. Well we

vote for an exit merely in the hope that the latter comes to pass. And furthermore that they would gladly suffer any other consequences that come with an exit. (Immigration and the influx of refugees is a massive problem and feelings run seriously deep throughout Europe and the UK on this topic. I do see it as a separate issue but I also see it as one of greater urgency and fear that unless European leaders agree a solution soon, we shall across Europe including the UK face real political unrest, even riots and other acts of civil insurrection.)

“It is suggested that being outside, Britain could independently pursue international trade deals with China, India and the US. Many people view the Central Agricultural Policy as wasteful and expensive.” Background The history goes along these lines - during the conservative election campaign David Cameron, fearful of losing votes to UKIP, promised an EU referendum. Today he seeks to convince the population that staying in is the right thing to do and when he is not telling the UK this, he is in Europe telling them all it will be fine, the UK aren’t going anywhere – provided we can make a few amendments. Cheeky – you might think and I would agree. Is it any wonder the patience of our European friends is running thin? The interesting element today is the breakaway efforts of fellow conservative Boris Johnson who is campaigning rather vehemently for an exit as David Cameron warns “Isil will be 'happy' with Brexit”, Boris says “PM's deal is biggest stitch up since the Bayeux Tapestry”. (Not sure I agree with this one as the expenses fiasco must sit high on the list of big stitch ups but it was nevertheless another amusing line from the maverick conservative) Some Pros & Cons I couldn’t possibly even hope to predict with any accuracy what will happen but I can take a punt and I will do so at the end. In the meantime here are just some of the reasons the UK would wish to leave and some reasons why they would want to stay: • Membership cost. There would be an annual saving of approximately £8.5billion which would not be paid to the EU. Whilst this sounds like a lot of money (no
argument there!) it is less than 10% of the annual NHS budget though some estimates suggest the total economic cost of membership is around 11 per cent of the UK’s annual GDP – which makes it something like £200billion - a figure I would regard as ‘different’! Could this amount of cash be better spent? • Trade. It is suggested that being outside, Britain could independently pursue international trade deals with China, India and the US. Many people view the Central Agricultural Policy as wasteful and expensive. • Bureaucracy. Most see the EU as an over-regulated, bureaucratic nightmare and leaving would allow the UK’s government and financial authorities to design a more appropriate regulatory framework. • Immigration. Possibly the hottest topic of debate. Along with the free movement of goods, services and money; the free movement of people was a founding principle of the EU as a result of which the UK has little to no control over immigration from other member states. Recently, some pro-Brexit ministers have claimed the UK is also resultantly at greater risk of a terror attack while it remains part of the EU. On the other hand: • Economics. 45 per cent of the UK’s exports are to the EU making it the key trading partner and so those voting to stay in claim that access to the EU market balances out even a £200billion cost of membership.
• Workers’ rights. The EU has introduced many directives which undoubtedly help British workers and protect their rights including regulated working hours and break times, four weeks annual leave, paid parental leave, antidiscrimination laws, so people cannot be discriminated against on the grounds of race, ethnicity, religion or belief, disability, age, or sexual orientation.
UK citizens to travel across most of Europe and they have a right to work without having to apply for a work visa.
• Food, health and animal rights. Most of the UK’s food standards laws originate in the EU, meaning many potentially harmful additives are banned from food.
• Immigration. This appears twice in the list as it forms both a reason to stay and a reason to exit. From an employer’s point of view, immigrants from the EU tend to be better educated than UK nationals – around 32 per cent have a degree, compared with 21 per cent of UK citizens. Those entering the UK from the EU since 2000 have contributed 34 per cent more financially to the UK than they have cost the UK. Some people who want to stay in the EU argue that immigration also creates a more diverse national culture.

anyone better understand these issues but it will at least demonstrate how complex the situation is and how much is seemingly at stake in June 2016. So here’s my punt at the outcome: If we leave: then the Pound will - over time - rise in value significantly. If we stay in, the pound will quickly recover but only modestly. Latest: Boris Johnson claimed the alleged pact between Mr Cameron and the corporate world over campaigning to stay in "stinks to high heaven"; and... Did you know that some French are considering a vote in favour of their own exit if the UK withdraw!? That – is interesting. Bonne Chance!

The Busy Queen Bee on customer service BUZZ 3 – TRAIN In the beehive, bees’ development progressions and movements are stimulated by the colony’s need, in a business environment, how can you NOT train your employees to perform better? Well, once you have developed your own standards and you know exactly what type of service your employees should be delivering, you have to tell your employees about it and implement those standards. The importance of training your employees - both new and experienced - cannot be overemphasized.
in the entertainment or tourist industries, good customer service skills help everybody, ultimately if your employees have been given the right tools, they will deliver consistently exceptional customer service.
Effective training of employees results in employees who: • Know what they're doing • Save time • Have a good feeling about the company • Get off to a good start • Employee churn • Sales growth
Training simply refers to the process of acquiring the essential skills required for a certain job. It targets specific goals, for instance understanding a process and operating a certain machine or system. Some of these are basics, such as polite, friendly, smiling, helpful attitudes, but some others don’t come as naturally and need a little bit of practice to give the m more confidence.
There are certain skills that employees need to master when they are facing their customers, regardless of the type of contact that you have with customers, whether it is over the phone, faceto-face, in a restaurant or shop, in an office or financial institution,
Take one example: asking questions, this is a very big part of any good sales assistant. The more open questions you ask, the more information you will receive from the customer, the more efficiently you can give them exactly what they need.
Another example would be “selling”: you can’t sell anything if you don’t know your product or service. If you go to a restaurant and ask the waiter what is the soup of the day, he will never be able to sell that soup if he doesn’t know what it is today! It is the same with any product or service. The first part of any sale is

the product knowledge. So, take the time to train your employees on your products, what are the benefits for the customer then what are the features? Always start with the benefits and show them how they will meet their needs. A feature is simply a characteristic of your product or service, such as a camera that shoots up to ten megapixels, well the benefit could be that more megapixels will produce a better photo and a better way to capture important memories; this will mean more to the customer than a technical description. When I run Customer Service Training sessions, I feel so overwhelmed by how positive all the employees were; and for the employees having their company
spending time and money on them, giving them the tools to provide Excellent Customer Service is also a proof of their commitment. I know, I know, you have heard it all before and most of you have experienced several training sessions over the years and are getting a bit blasé by it all, but the real point of training is hopefully to teach a thing or two, to refresh your memory on things you may not do, and if anything else to reassure you that you are doing ok and you can take that impostor syndrome feeling away. Training your employees isn’t just a need, it is simply a necessity. Extract from the book, Thrive with the Hive, author Claire BoscqScott, download your copy here leanpub.com/thrivewiththehive
