Islander hopes to raise £1000 for charity This year, organisers of the Standard Chartered Jersey Marathon are calling on people to share their reasons for entering the race on social media using the hashtag #runforareason. Islander Sarah Naylor, 26, is one such participant preparing to #runforareason. She is hoping to raise £1000 for the Molly Watt Trust (MWT), a UK charity set up to help people who suffer from Usher Syndrome and to fund research into finding a cure for the rare hearing and visual impairment disorder. Sarah, an ex Grainville and Hautlieu student, decided to run her first ever marathon after hearing last year that her 17 year old cousin Pamela had been diagnosed with Type II Usher Syndrome. ‘Pamela was born hard of hearing but last year she discovered that she has Type II Usher Syndrome, which means her sight is also now deteriorating. I wanted to do something for Pamela to show my

support and hopefully raise money to help other individuals and families affected by the condition. We are so proud of Pamela who recently bravely donated a skin sample to Great Ormond Street Hospital to help with their future research,’ said Sarah. ‘I’ve participated in the Mourant Ozannes Relay Run twice amongst many other local charity events, but this year will be my first ever attempt at a full marathon. The sense of achievement afterwards and knowing I’ve tried to support Pamela in some way will make all the hard work worthwhile.’ Usher Syndrome a rare genetic disorder which results in a combination of hearing loss and visual impairment. The condition is a leading cause of deafblindness worldwide and at present it is incurable. Sarah is training for the marathon, which takes place on Sunday 2nd October, by taking part in circuits at the gym and increasing her

running each week. ‘I don’t have a strict training schedule but I’m maintaining my fitness levels and hoping to complete the marathon in less than five hours. I’ve had great support from my family, friends and others - notably Adrian who takes the circuit classes that I’ve been going to for the last two years. For me, just completing the run would be a huge achievement. I myself have a problem with my ears in that my Eustachian tubes are too wide, which means I experience constant autophony and am left with a “bucket over the head” feeling. This, alongside the pressure changes that this problem causes, can be very distracting, especially when I’m running or exercising. 2016 GCSE results Provisional GCSE results show that Jersey students have performed very well compared to their English counterparts. Jersey students achieved 76.8% of examinations at grades A* - C compared to 66.6% in England. Data released recently shows the proportion of higher grades locally, those at A* and A, is up on last year from 28% to 29.5%. This is significantly higher than England which is 20.3%. The Education Department will be producing a detailed statistical report on Island-wide GCSE performance later in the academic year. This includes value added measures which track the progress made by individual pupils from the end of primary school. Education Minister Rod Bryans said "Our students, parents and schools should be very pleased with these results. There is no doubt the hard work of the students, the fine work of the teachers and the heartfelt support of the parents have deeply

Well done to all involved.” This year a total of 988 students sat a total of 8,985 GCSE examinations in the Island. These figures include GCSE examinations taken in all Jersey secondary schools. Once appeals and re-marks have been completed, individual secondary schools will publish adjusted results after the autumn half term. These more accurate figures will be posted by each school on their websites and will include relevant contextual information.

Around 80 parishioners have attended a meeting about plans to build a multi-million pound dog kennel in St Mary. The JSPCA has applied to redevelop a derelict dairy farm because its current shelter isn’t big enough. Constable Juliette Gallichan says residents have raised concerns about noise and extra traffic on the green lanes. The JSPCA says the shelter – for up to 85 abandoned and boarding dogs – will not have any negative impact on the parish and that the building will be well soundproofed. The committee is due to make a decision on 22nd September.

The Asian shore crab is a species of crab from the Western Pacific Ocean and is now an invasive species in North America and Europe. While individual specimens have been reported in Jersey since 2009, thousands of the crabs are now believed to be living around the coast of Jersey.

Drug seizures increase The Jersey Customs and Immigration Service (JCIS) seized controlled drugs with a street value of £2.6 million from August 2015 to July 2016. This represents an increase on the £2.2 million worth of controlled drugs which were seized by the service during the previous 12 month period. Seizures of cannabis represented £2.5 million of the total figure, an increase from £1 million the previous year. In addition, £214,000 in cash, suspected to be the proceeds of crime, has been

seized by Customs Officers in the past year. The service continues to work in close collaboration on operational matters with the UK Border Force and National Crime Agency and also maintains strong working relations with the Guernsey Border Agency and French Customs. The Assistant Minister for Home Affairs, Connétable Deidre Mezbourian, said "These figures reflect the dedicated work of the Jersey Customs and

Immigration Service and highlight the importance of maintaining our medium and longer term investment in a strong law enforcement presence at the Island’s borders. "JCIS have long-established and strong working relations with numerous external agencies and will soon be enhancing their close collaboration with the States of Jersey Police, through the establishment of a joint intelligence unit, to ensure our borders are further protected from all forms of criminal activity."

IT expert jailed for money laundering

Ex-Wales international and Liverpool FC legend Ian Rush, MBE, will be joining the Standard Chartered Jersey Marathon on An IT expert who laundered almost Sunday 2nd October as race £600,000 has been jailed for six years. ambassador. He had pleaded guilty to several counts relating to money trafficking and tax evasion at Jersey's Royal Court. He was also fined £2,000 and had assets of £214,237 confiscated on Thursday. Goodwin was sentenced for two counts of income tax fraud, one count of attempting to pervert the course of justice and a fourth count of converting, transferring or removing proceeds of drug trafficking from the jurisdiction.

Mr Rush, who played for Liverpool from 1980 to 1987 and again from 1988 to 1996, is the Club’s all time leading goalscorer with 346 goals in all competitions during his two spells with the Reds. At international level, he made 73 appearances for the Wales national team and remains the record goalscorer for his country, with 28 goals between 1980 and 1996. Registration now open for Run4Men 2016 It’s time for the men and boys of Jersey to get going, get active and get involved with helping to beat cancer in this year’s Run4Men. The event returns on Sunday 25th September 2016 and invites male participants of all ages to walk, jog or run to help raise money for Cancer Research UK. Now in its sixth year, Run4Men was established to give men a chance to step up and participate in an event comparable to the well-supported Race for Life for ladies. The popular Run4Men is sponsored by Jersey-based direct lending firm Sancus. Everyone can take part with a choice of three distances to suit all abilities, including 5km, 10km and 15km distances. Warm up starts at 10:30 AM and all courses start at 11:00 AM from Les Jardins de la Mer, with pit stops along the way. Registration for Run4Men costs £25 for adults and £10 for children under 16 years old and is open until Friday 23rd September. Local companies, sports clubs and groups of friends are also encouraged to enter

This fee will be combined with sponsorships raised by individual runners to support the life saving work of Cancer Research UK. Last year’s event raised £8,500 and the Jersey committee is eager to break £10,000. Fundraising from Jersey goes to the Southampton Cancer Research Centre, where nearly £4 million was spent on research last year, raised almost entirely through public donation. This is a chance for people to pay

significant attention to cancer in men. Cancer Research UK has found that men are 14% more likely to get cancer than women, and by 2027, a man’s lifetime risk of cancer is predicted to reach one in two. A women’s lifetime risk is also increasing, just not as fast. Thanks to the generosity of the supporters and dramatic improvements in prevention, diagnosis and treatment, survival rates for people with cancer have doubled over the last 40 years. But 160,000 people in the UK still lose their lives to cancer every year. By 2027, Cancer Research UK aims to ensure that greater and greater numbers will be able to survive their cancer diagnosis.

A Mental Health Strategy has predicted the number of over 65 year olds suffering from dementia in Jersey will increase from 1,147 in 2010 to 2,347 by 2030.

AFM donates and fits fire alarm system at Air Search hangar WW2 shells and mine discovered at Grouville Bay Several "dangerous" World War Two shells and bombs were destroyed after being discovered by a metal detectorist. The German weapons were discovered at Grouville Bay last month and were destroyed by the bomb disposal unit. Bomb disposal officer Stuart Elliot said all the weapons were apparently in a dangerous state and condition. "I can now confirm we had eight antitank shells - 37mm anti-tank shells - two mortar bombs and a German mine," he said.

Rise in rate of old age pension Pensioners will shortly receive a letter from Social Security confirming an increase in their old age pension payments. The increase in the index of average earnings of 2.1% announced today will be fully reflected in the value of the Social Security pension. A full rate old-age pension is currently worth £199.99 per week and this will rise by £4.20 a week up to £204.19. For a married couple receiving a pension based on the contributions of the husband, the maximum rate will rise by exactly £7 a week from £332.01 up to £339.01. These rates will apply from the first Thursday of October. Deputy Susie Pinel, the Minister for Social Security, explained: "This is good news for pensioners. The cost of living for pensioners is currently running at 1.1%, and the rise of 2.1% in pension payments means that the value of the pension has risen in real terms compared to last year."

New pension application Social Security has launched a new digital form to make the lives of its customers easier. The new online application form will allow Islanders, reaching pension age, to apply for their pensions quickly and easily. Customers who are eligible for a pension will automatically receive details of how to apply online, about four months before their 65th birthday. The forms official launch follows a successful three month trial gaining feedback from customers. Operations Director Sophie Le Sueur is pleased with the progress being made. She said: “We’ve had a great response with many of the customers contacted during the trial period opting to use the new online service. “Having online pension applications means we can offer improved service to our customers, by providing a user friendly form that they can complete where and when they want. It can fit in with our customers busy lives whilst, at the same time, helping us

to improve our processes and save money through reduced paperwork, postage and administration.” The Minister for Social Security, Deputy Susie Pinel, said: “I’m delighted that we are receiving really positive feedback from customers who are using the new online pension form. This is another significant step towards further modernising the service we provide our customers.” Plus, any customers who need help completing this new pension form can take advantage of the new ‘Assisted Digital’ initiative in the reception area of Social Security. Two recently installed computer stations, and a digital service advisor will be available to help customers who don’t have access to a computer, or don’t have the skills or confidence to use online services. The new pension form and Assisted Digital initiative are part of the States-wide eGov programme, and are designed to make communication with the States of Jersey quicker and simpler.

Sports academy approved against planning advice Plans for a multimillion-pound sporting academy have been approved in Jersey, against planning advice. Sew Stylish DIY cotton shopper the other handle ends and used the sewing machine to sew each one in place. I then sewed down the folded edges of the bag from one end to the other. 5. Adding the fruit: I lay my pieces of fruit, face up, over a sheet of bondaweb, placed a scrap piece of material over the top and ironed for a couple of mins. I cut the pieces of fruit out and peeled off the backing paper.

Not often can you think of food shopping and fashion in the same sentence. With this funky DIY shopper, I’m already looking forward to my next trip to the shops! What I used: • 36.5” x 19.5” cotton for the bag • 2.5” x 30” cotton for the handles x2 - cotton for the fruit pieces - rotary cutter - fabric scissors - fabric paint - bonda-web How I made my shopper: 1. The fruit: I started by making my fruit pieces. On a large piece of cotton, I drew my fruit, painted with fabric paint and left them to dry overnight. Once dried, I cut the fruit out and left to one side. 2. Prepping the bag: I folded my bag material in half, with the folded edge closest to me. With the rotary cutter, I cut down the open edges to make sure the material was straight. For the top seam, I folded the edge of the material back towards myself ½ inch and then folded it again 1 inch, pinning in place. Flipping the material, I repeated on the other side.

3. Prepping the handles: I laid the handle material out flat in front of me and folded the edges in towards the middle. I then folded the whole strip over, doing this with both pieces and then ironing them flat. I closed the open edges of both handles on the sewing machine and went back to my bag. 4. Attaching the handles: Using a Frixion pen, I drew a couple of lines to mark where the inside of the handles will be. (3 ½ inches apart in the middle.) I placed one end of a handle underneath the folded edge of the bag and bag over the top of the folded edge, pinning in place. I cut the handles to the desired length and then repeated with

Laying the pieces of fruit in position on my bag, I covered with material again and ironed over the top, being careful not to drag the iron but to lift and place it to ensure my fruit did not move. 6. Detailing: I handstitched around each piece of fruit and added some thicker stitches in certain areas to add some texture. 7. French seams: With the bag the right way around, I stitched from top to bottom on both sides, staying very close to the edge. After turning the bag inside out and ironing it flat, I stitched down both sides about ¼” away from the edge. I finished it off by ironing the seam to one side and pressing the whole bag.

8. Squaring off the bottom: Very easy to do, tricky to explain! With the bag inside out, I held one of the corners and lined up the side seam to the crease underneath the bag and pinned in place. I measured 2 inches up and drew a line from one edge to the other with my Frixion pen. I did this on the other corner too. I sewed a couple of rows across my drawn lines and removed the pins. To give

it a clean edge and to stop any fraying, I cut off the excess material with my zigzag scissors. One final press and the bag is ready to make its first appearance :) TIP: Ironing over the Frixion pen will remove the pen mark. If you accidentally remove a part you wanted to keep though, don’t worry, pop your work in the freezer for a couple of hours and the marking will reappear. All material from Crafty Quilters

Ingredients • 2 medium aubergine • 2 tbsp olive oil • 1 onion, finely chopped

Instructions ■ Preheat oven to 200C. ■ Using a sharp knife, cut the butternut squash into thick wedges, keeping the skin on. ■ Place the butternut squash on a baking tray and scatter over the herbs, garlic and olive oil. Season with salt and freshly ground black pepper and transfer to the oven for 45 minutes, turning half way. ■ Once the wedges are golden brown and tender, remove from the oven. ■ We served ours with the blackberry chutney we made last month.

• 1 small red pepper • 2 garlic cloves, crushed • 225g mushroom • 350g fresh spinach • Handful of grated cheddar (you can use a cheese of your choice) • 6 tbsp fromage frais • grated zest 1 lemon • 25g pine nut, toasted

Instructions ■ Heat oven to 200C. ■ Place the aubergines on a baking tray, brush with 1 tbsp of the olive oil and cook for 20-25 mins until tender and golden. Scoop out the flesh, then roughly chop. ■ Meanwhile, heat remaining oil in a large frying pan, then cook the onion and garlic for 4-5 mins until the onion has softened. Add the aubergine flesh to the pan and fry for a few minutes, add the mushrooms, then cook for about 5 mins until browned and tender. Add the spinach and cook for 3-4 mins until wilted, stirring frequently. ■ Remove the pan from the heat and stir in half of the cheese, fromage frais, pine nuts and salt

and pepper to taste. ■ Spoon the spinach mixture into the aubergine halves and sprinkle the remaining cheese over the top. Return to the oven and cook for 10-15 mins until the topping is golden.

End of summer ratatouille This end of summer ratatouille is a delicious way of using up the last of the summer veg. Serves 4 Prep: 15 mins | Cook: 1hr Total time: 1 hour 15 mins Ingredients • 1 onion, diced • 2 cloves garlic, crushed • 1 aubergine, cubed • 1 courgette, cubed • 1 green bell pepper, chopped • 1 yellow bell pepper, chopped • 1 red bell pepper, chopped • 2 large tomatoes, chopped • 1 bay leaf • 1 tbsp chopped fresh parsley • 1 tbsp chopped fresh basil • 2 sprigs fresh thyme • salt and pepper to taste

Instructions ■ Heat 1 1/2 tbsp of oil in a large pan over medium-low heat. Add onion and garlic, cooking until soft. ■ In another large pan, heat 1 1/2 tbsp of oil and sauté the courgette until slightly browned on all sides. Remove and place in the pot with the onions and garlic. ■ Sauté the remaining vegetables, adding a spoonful of oil to the pan each time you add a new vegetables. Once each batch has been sautéed add them to the large pot with the onions, garlic and courgette. ■ Season with salt and pepper. Add the bay leaf, thyme and basil and cover the pot. Cook over medium heat for 15 to 20 minutes. ■ Add the chopped tomatoes and parsley, cook for a further 10-15 minutes. Stir occasionally. ■ Remove the bay leaf and season to taste.

• 1 tbsp vanilla extract • 3 tbsp cocoa powder For the Icing: • 200g Icing sugar •200g Butter

Prep: 20 mins Cook: 20 mins Totl time: 40 mins Ingredients: For the cupcakes: • 250g butter • 250g caster sugar • 250g gluten free self raising flour • 4 Eggs

Instructions ■ Preheat the oven to 190C and line the cupcake tin with cupcake cases. ■ Add the butter and sugar into a mixing bowl and whisk until pale and fluffy. ■ Add the eggs one at a time, adding a little flour after each one. When combined add the vanilla

and the cocoa powder, stir until combined. ■ Divide up into the cupcake cases and bake for 20 minutes until golden and risen. Leave to cool. ■ Make the icing by placing the butter and the icing sugar into a bowl, mix together with the back of a spoon until soft and light. ■ Place the icing into a piping bag and decorate the cupcakes. Tip: If you don’t have a piping bag, use a sandwich bag and cut a small hole in one of the corners.

Almost as old as England itself (or at least since the 17th century) is the caricature of the tea-obsessed Brit. According to the United Kingdom Tea & Infusions Association, tea’s stranglehold over the British imagination is an actual matter of fact:

“A cup of tea is a vital part of everyday life for the majority of people in modern Britain—in fact tea is so integral to our routine, that it is difficult to imagine life without it!” A study of consumer purchases mixed with decades of data from National Food Surveys reveal that tea consumption has fallen steadily over the course of two generations. Since 1974, the BBC reports, weekly purchases of tea have “experienced almost a two-thirds fall” from 68

grams per household per week to just 25 grams. As Sky notes, that drop suggests that “Britons are drinking on average just eight cups of tea a week today, down from 23 in 1974.” So what gives? There are many factors that could help explain the decline. First and foremost is the rise of coffee culture. The difference between culture and consumption is an important distinction here because while coffee isn’t being consumed in wild quantities in the UK, coffee shops have become a trend and are now seen as the preferred place to be. As one analyst told The Telegraph, “The way in which coffee is being consumed has changed with people now visiting coffee shops where they might previously have consumed instant coffee at home or in the workplace.” If one associates coffee with a new social paradigm, tea is often linked to sweets/biscuits/cakes, which have also fallen as new data show British consumers have tried to move away from sugar and bread toward healthier trends. One telling fact from The Telegraph’s report: “Volume sales of sweet biscuits fell from 451m kg in 2009 to an

estimated 413m kg.” Another likely factor is a yen for something different, even just a departure from traditional tea. A sales analysis by The Guardian last August offered that while traditional tea fell 6 percent in the past five years, sales of less traditional teas (fruit, herbal, specialty, green) has grown steadily from 2012. Did you know, tea breaks are a tradition which have been with us for approximately 200 years? Initially when workers commenced their day at around 5 or 6am, employers allowed a break in the morning when food and tea were served. Some employers repeated the break in the afternoon as well. Between 1741 and 1820 industrialists, landowners and clerics tried to put a stop to the tea break maintaining that tea drinking and rest made working people slothful. Modern thinking couldn’t be further away from this - regular tea breaks can play a vital part in the day to help maintain a positive attitude towards work and fluid intake. To conclude, whilst tea sales may be down, it is still by far the most popular drink in the UK with over 165 million cups drunk everyday!

Seafood Festival set to make a splash at the waterfront! Jersey is set to host the islands first ever St Helier Seafood Festival in the weekend following the Jersey International Air Display, located on the Waterfront Promenade and Les Jardins De La Mer surrounding The Radisson Blu Waterfront Hotel.

Radisson Blu Hotel will launch the event with a soft opening of their Al Fresco area on the Promenade on Thursday 8th September; visitors can enjoy a refreshing drink and nibbles, whilst taking in the view of the Air Display from the best spot in town.

Organised by Jersey Development Company and the St Helier Town Centre management team, in conjunction with Radisson Blu Hotel, the event promises a fun filled weekend which will bring a festival atmosphere to The Waterfront for the first time. With over 25 stalls to visit, live entertainment, fresh seafood and family fun rides from the James Cole Family Funfair, visitors will find something for all the family.

The main event will kick off on the Friday and will feature stalls selling crafts and seafood with participation from the likes of Faulkner Fisheries, The Prosecco Van, Le Fregate and many more. New copyright law bans replica pieces from being made

Up until recently, it was easy—and perfectly legal—to get your hands on a replica of an iconic piece of furniture in the UK, where manufactured goods were protected for only 25 years after their initial marketing and release. In most of Europe, that time frame was much longer at 70 years after the death of the designer. New copyright laws, which were passed in 2013, have finally come into effect as of 28th July, bringing the UK in line with the rest of the Continent. According to Dezeen, this change prohibits dealers from importing or creating new copies of industrial design objects, and in six months, from selling them, too.

Arne Jacobsen Egg chair, 1958 Originally designed for the Radisson SAS hotel in Copenhagen, Denmark, Arne Jacobsen’s Egg easy chair has since been manufactured by Republic of Fritz Hansen. Recognisable to the British public as the diary room chair from the first series of Big Brother, it can be bought for £559 through replica retailer Vita Interiors. That compares to £4,283 from Fritz Hansen. The design is now protected until 2041.

Eames DSW chair, 1950 The plastic Eames DSW chair with its Eiffel Tower-like base is one of the most copied pieces of furniture. Demand has been extraordinary for both. All 4,500 spaces at Glasgow Airport have now been fully sold and all 2,900 spaces at Gatwick Airport have also been sold. Both airports are now yielding 10% net of all management fees, ground rent etc. • 1st September sees the release of 1,500 spaces at London Luton Airport. These car parks have been there for over 20 years and are just 3 minutes from the airport. Investments at these car parks at London Luton now offer investors a guaranteed return of 10% in year 1 & 2 which is predicted to rise to 11% in year 3 and 4 with a further increase to 12% by year 5. The investor receives a newly formed lease registered with the land registry for 999 years. • LLA passenger numbers have once again increased year on

year. Numbers for May have increased by 17% over last year to over 13 million passengers annually. The spaces are priced at £25,000 each. The investor receives their first payment of 10% just a couple of weeks after completion i.e. the return is effectively paid 12 months in advance. Each space is let out at circa £70 per week and anticipated occupancy rates will be between 90% and 95%. To put this into perspective Jersey charge £117 per week and their occupancy rates will be significantly less than the 90% Over 1.1 million people flew through London Luton Airport in April representing a 17% increase in passenger numbers compared with the same month last year. The latest record month means LLA has catered to over 13 million passengers in the past 12 months, the first time ever that the airport has passed that milestone. April also marked 25 consecutive months of passenger growth at the airport.

London Luton Airport is addressing this increased demand by investing £110million to transform the airport. Contractors are already on site redeveloping the terminal building to increase annual capacity from 12 million to 18 million passengers by 2020. As well as delivering major upgrades to the airport’s facilities, the transformation will also dramatically improve the passenger experience by expanding the route network. Air Nostrum is the latest carrier to announce new services from LLA; the Spanish airline has announced that tickets are now on sale for twice-weekly flights to San Sebastián. The new route, which will enter service on the 26 July, is exclusive to LLA and will

open up access to this popular resort offering world-renowned cuisine and beautiful Blue Flag beaches. April also saw the launch of three other new routes. Blue Air has begun flights to the historic cities of Larnaca (Cyprus) and Turin (Italy). LLA has also become the first English airport to offer a service to Paris Orly with Transavia. The quality of Jersey’s auditor oversight regime recognised Jersey has secured the maximum recognition from the European Union (EU) for a ‘third country’ for its oversight regime for auditors. Administered by the Jersey Financial Services Commission (JFSC), the oversight regime is responsible for auditors who audit the financial statements of listed Jersey companies – for example, companies that have shares or other securities traded on an EU-regulated market such as the London Stock Exchange. The European Commission confirmed that it was satisfied with the JFSC’s information confidentiality provisions in relation to auditors in its recently published legislation, referred to as an Adequacy Decision. The Adequacy Decision also recognised that the JFSC’s ability to cooperate with EU audit oversight bodies is equivalent to that required under the EU’s Statutory Audit Directive.

Average Earnings Rise To £36,400 The rise was driven by private sector pay increases (2.3%), while public sector ones were pegged back (1.3%). Finance workers are the highest earners, making £960 a week whilst hotel, restaurant and bar staff are paid the least – just £390. For Jersey, the most common amount for a full time worker is £560 a week, or £29,100 a year. The biggest pay rises of the past 12 months went to builders, with earning in the construction industry up 4.1% to £680 a week. It is seen as a strong indicator of the trade recovering from the recession.

JFSC signs MoU with Liechtenstein’s Financial Market Authority The Jersey Financial Services Commission (JFSC) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Liechtenstein Financial Market Authority (FMA) which puts in place a formal mechanism to enable the regulatory authorities to cooperate on supervisory matters, exchange information and apply oversight of regulated firms in order to maintain the stability and security of the financial systems in each respective market. John Harris, Director General of the JFSC, Dr. Urs Phillipp RothCuony, Chairman of the Board of Directors, and Mario Gassner, Chief Executive Officer of the FMA signed the MoU at a signing ceremony at the FMA’s offices in Liechtenstein. John Harris, Director General of

the JFSC commented: “I am delighted to sign this Memorandum of Understanding with the Financial Services Authority. With the similarity and extent of issues and challenges in financial services for both Jersey and Liechtenstein expected to increase in the coming years, it is important that the JFSC and the FMA are in a position to co-operate closely. This Memorandum will assist in that regard as it provides a formal framework for the exchange of regulatory information and mutual assistance. We understand each other and we already work effectively together so this agreement reinforces yet further an already excellent relationship.” The visit to Liechtenstein also comprised a series of bilateral meetings and a presentation

Counting the cost of your divorce According to statistics published in the UK in 2014 the average couple spends £44,000 on their separation. Viberts are launching a new fee structure that will cut both the financial and emotional cost of ending a marriage. Up to now some law firms have offered a ‘fixed fee’ for the divorce process (this covers only the mechanics of ending the marriage) but there is less clarity about the costs of sorting out the finances (often the most costly and timeconsuming stage of ending the marriage). Each stage is costed so they can build up a picture of the overall cost before proceeding down any given route, so there are no hidden costs or nasty surprises at the end. Is this really new? Yes – this is very new. Ending a marriage is an incredibly stressful time and all too often legal fees build up very quickly. With this fee structure, each client will be able to see clearly what each stage will cost them and what future steps will cost depending on the route chosen. For example, it will always be the case under this fee structure that resolving the dispute out

of court before a final hearing will be cheaper as well as being far less stressful. This is a very different approach to the hourly rate used by most lawyers and the client is therefore in control of the costs. There will always be a few cases that it can’t apply to as they are too complicated but the client will be informed of this near the beginning of the process. What are the benefits to clients? Ogier advises on launch of AEW Value Investors Asia II Fund Ogier in Jersey and Luxembourg have acted as legal advisers to AEW Value Investors Asia II, which recently held its final closing. The firm raised commitments totalling $590.2 million, including $15 million of sponsor coinvestment capital. The fund, a closed-ended Jersey Expert Fund structured as a limited partnership, is AEW Capital Management’s second Asia valueadded fund. Feeder and parallel limited partnerships were established in Luxembourg. Investors in the fund are primarily public and corporate pension plans and insurance companies based in the US and Europe. The fund has six assets in Hong Kong, Seoul, Singapore and Shanghai, representing $255 million of equity and more than 937,000 square feet of office and retail assets.
