Blog post reveals further details on hospital plans More details about Jersey’s Future Hospital have been revealed. A blog post published by Richard Glover, Head of Major Projects – Planning, Department for Infrastructure, has provided an update on what’s been done since the government settled on a site for the 450 million pound project. It sets out the criteria the planning application must fit, and explains the latest developments. After public backlash on plans to develop at People’s Park, the Council of Ministers has confirmed that the preferred site for the Future Hospital is a development on the existing site where the Gwyneth Huelin building currently is. The blog outlines the application process as follows: • Make the case for the hospital • Show how the new hospital will integrate with its surroundings • Show how the hospital will fit in with Future St Helier
• Meet environmental standards • Demonstrate public and stakeholder engagement • Make provisions for any surrounding businesses and homes affected by the build The States are expected to debate the site this November and, if agreed, we will then begin to develop a plan made in close partnership with hospital staff and patient groups. This plan will form an outline planning application in 2017 to establish the principle of the build. Once the build has been agreed in principle by the States and by Planning, there will be further work with staff and patient groups to establish a more detailed design for the hospital. This full, detailed plan will then be subject to States debate, and if it receives their approval, it will then be submitted to Planning for review. If everyone is happy with it, building will start in 2019.
There has been an increase in Jersey reported rapes Nearly four times as many people came forward to report a rape in Jersey in 2015 compared with 2011, a freedom of information request found.

In 2015 there were 39 reported cases compared with 10 in 2011. Figures from the FOI request also show only a minority of those reported end up in a prosecution - of the 39 reported cases in 2015 only 30 were prosecuted. So far this year there have been 28 reported rapes in Jersey, but 22 have not been prosecuted. An investigation in England and Wales in 2015 found 12% of reported rapes of adults resulted in the suspect being charged or summons being issued. In Jersey about 30% of reported rapes ended in a prosecution over the past six years.

CTJ Housing Trust applied to demolish 1-2 Minden Place and build a five-storey retail and residential development of social housing in a mix of one and two bedroom apartments and three new commercial or retail units.
Planning Committee members said they supported the strong work and excellent reputation of CTJ Housing Trust, but were concerned about the scale, impact and design of the building in such a central location, in particular, the use of brick in the design. They were also concerned about the lack of parking for the site, which they thought was unrealistic.

A slice of Queen Victoria's wedding cake dating from the 19th century has fetched £1,500 at auction. The cake, which has survived from Queen Victoria's wedding to Prince Albert in 1840, was sold by Jersey collector David Gainsborough Roberts. The monarch's knickers, keys from the Titanic and Winston Churchill's hat also sold from his collection at Christie's in London. A presentation box, inscribed with “The Queen’s Bridal Cake Buckingham Palace, Feby 10, 1840”, also sold with the cake, along with Queen Victoria’s signature on paper with the royal cypher.

Jersey Library launches first wellbeing month Jersey Library is preparing for its first Health and Wellbeing Month. Activities taking place throughout October include various taster sessions, workshops and talks, with information and books available on a wide range of healthrelated topics. Judith Baker, Senior Librarian, said “The aim is to support emotional, physical and mental health in the island, and we are working with professionals from the Health Department, charities, individuals and other organisations to achieve this. From a ‘knit and natter’ session to learning how much sugar is
in everyday foods, there will be something for everyone. We are finalising an exciting programme of events.” The Library will also be showcasing the book collections they have for emotional and mental health, including books on prescription and self-help for teenagers. These can help you to manage your health and wellbeing through selfhelp reading. They will also have a display of uplifting mood boosting books, and reading well books on prescription for dementia for those living with the disease, their families and carers.

Sports travel grants The Assistant Minister for Economic Development, Tourism, Sport and Culture, Connétable Steve Pallett, has announced that extra funding from within the department’s budget will be used to support sports travel grants. The grants were scheduled to have been heavily cut due to the reduction in growth funding for the ‘Fit for Future’ strategy but, with the support of the Treasury Minister and the Chief Minister, they have now been restored to 2014 levels. In practice, this means that £125,000 will be available to
local sports bodies and clubs in 2017, with the expectation that the same level of funding will continue through to 2018 and 2019. Connétable Pallett announced his plans at a meeting with the Sports Advisory Council (SAC). The SAC is the body empowered by Government to provide advice on the allocation of funding for sports travel grants. The Assistant Minister made it clear to members of the SAC that the continued funding would be contingent on the development of a rigorous and equitable system for the
allocation of grants. Connétable Pallett commented “I am delighted to announce that, with the help of officials in my department, I have been able to find a solution for sports travel grant funding in 2017 and beyond. The ability to travel off-Island and compete is vital to the proper development of our local sporting talent. I am especially pleased to be able to make this announcement now, when local clubs will still have time to factor this news into their decision-making for forthcoming fixtures and competitions.”

More wheelchair friendly taxis on the ranks Channel Islands Heritage Festival

To ensure that travellers with disabilities are properly supported, the drivers that provide these new facilities will be required to complete comprehensive accessibility training and customer care courses. The first wave of drivers to complete this are the new purple plate holders.
DVS (Driver and Vehicle Standards) will be licencing more wheelchair accessible vehicles to operate from public taxi ranks. DVS are initially issuing ten ‘purple plates’ to private hire wheelchair accessible taxis, which will allow them to use the public ranks. These will supplement the existing wheelchair accessible rank taxis that are already operating, bringing the total to 26. This is the first wave of taxicabs to get this ‘purple plate’ accreditation, but more will follow as more drivers come forward with wheelchair accessible vehicles, until the Minister for Infrastructure Deputy Eddie Noel's current target of 20% of all taxi-cabs to have wheelchair accessible vehicles is reached across the industry. These vehicles, when picking up at a public rank, will be required

We are increasing the numbers available to enable this to happen.” to charge the same as any other public rank taxi. Deputy Noel has recently made orders to formalise the required standards for accessible and wheelchair accessible taxicabs. These orders specify the equipment which will eventually be required to make all taxicabs more accessible. These measures are often simple aids,
such as high visibility tape on door thresholds and handles to assist the visually impaired, additional door straps to assist customers to lower themselves into seats or swivel cushions, which can be placed on seats to help customers turn and draw their legs into the vehicle. All vehicles will be required to carry such equipment by January 2019.
In the near future, DVS will also be establishing part-time taxi ranks which will be operational at peak times late at night on weekends to cater for the demand from those going home from pubs, restaurants and clubs. Any taxicab, rank or private hire, will be able to use these new part-time ranks.

Golf Day raises £10,000 for Family Nursing & Home Care The eighth annual Family Nursing & Home Care (FNHC) Golf Day took place last month at La Moye Golf Club and raised £10,000 for the charity. Every year Family Nursing & Home Care hold a Charity Golf Day to raise funds for Community Nursing in Jersey. Twenty teams competed for the Richard Brocken Memorial Trophy, so named after the long time generous supporter Richard Brocken. This year’s winners were John Baines, Chris Smith, Phil Hunt and Mark Duffy with 92 points. Each of the team also won an overnight stay for two at the Longueville Manor Hotel. 2nd Prize went to The Jamey Dodgers; Bob Beslievre, Stanley Ball,Bruce Robinson and Paul Reed with 90 points. 3rd Prize went to the Caesareans; Steve Clayton, Alan Martin, Lee Rimeur & Vaughan Rimeur with 89 points. The Ladies longest drive on the 9th was made by Dympna Varian. The Men's longest drive on the 9th was made by Phil Livingstone.
Chris Huelin was nearest the pin on the first (5’ 1”). Beat the Pro on the 12th was a separate competition to win an Iphone 6SE - 13 people succeeded in beating the Pro, Rory Derv, and the winner’s name drawn from the hat was Paul Reed. As well as 18 holes of golf, competitors enjoyed refreshments on the course and a three course lunch in the clubhouse, with prize giving, raffle and auction. The event ended in good spirits with prizes and trophies being presented by Julie Gafoor, the CEO of FNHC. Tamba Park retrospective permission agreed The committee approved a retrospective application by the owner of Tamba Park for a number of operational changes to the visitor attraction in the St Lawrence Green Zone.

The application attracted eight letters, one of which supported the proposals. Objections centred on noise and traffic generated by the attraction.

The application also requested permission to change the use of land for a car park.
At its meeting in September, the Planning Committee accepted it was dealing with some operational changes to an existing visitor attraction and that some concerns
expressed by nearby residents related to the existing site. However, they acknowledged concerns about the management of noise from the site and applied restrictions on future noise levels.

Shingles vaccine catch-up New States vet aims to keep Jersey clean The States new veterinary officer says his main focus will be to keep Jersey as disease free as possible. Theo Knight-Jones has worked with the UN in the Middle East and Africa. He has expertise in controlling the spread of diseases such as foot-and mouth and bird flu. Mr Knight-Jones says keeping Jersey clean is imperative to both the health of humans and animals. ”If suddenly our disease status of the island changes and we have a new disease that no one wants then it really creates a problem if we want to send animals on and off the island which is a problem.”

We expect, probably in January 2017, to have vaccine available for people born in 1938 and 1939 and we’ll remind people at the point when their year of birth group becomes eligible. Over time, we’ll be aiming to extend the offer of shingles vaccine to those born in 1940 to 1945 inclusive. We ask for people’s patience and understanding as we gradually roll this vaccine programme out.
A ‘catch-up’ programme for the shingles vaccine has been launched, with a new group of Islanders – those born in 1937 – now eligible to receive the vaccine. The aim is to prevent the development of shingles amongst members of the age group who are most at risk of getting shingles and the painful complications that often accompany it. Dr Linda Diggle, Head of Preventive Programmes said “We are very pleased that we can now start extending the offer of shingles vaccine to more Islanders. This catch-up programme is in addition to the routine shingles vaccination programme already available to people during their 70th birthday year (currently those born in 1946).” Dr Diggle explained “We know from evidence that shingles vaccine is most effective when
given to people when they’re aged 70. It’s also effective when given to people aged 71-79. GPs in Jersey have already vaccinated and protected around a third of the people born in 1946 against shingles since we made the vaccine available earlier this year. “We’re now advising GPs to offer the vaccine to people born in
1937 – those people who are 79, or will turn 79 before the end of 2016. We’ve been able to source a limited supply of shingles vaccine and it’s important that we offer protection first to the oldest age group recommended to receive the vaccine as they are at the highest risk. “It’s not possible to offer vaccine
The vaccine course consists of just a single injection. Those who have already had shingles can still be vaccinated, as the vaccine will boost their immunity against further shingles attacks. The cost of the vaccine is being paid for by the Health and Social Services Department; GPs may charge a consultation fee to administer the injection.
St Mary kennel plans withdrawn The JSPCA has withdrawn its application to create an 88-unit dog kennel in the Green Zone in St Mary following Planning Committee concerns.
Parents were sent holiday reminders Parents do not have the automatic right to take their children out of school during term time according to the Education Department after “family holidays” was listed as the second most common reason for non-attendance last year – after illness. Tracey De Gruchy, an Educational Welfare Officer, has revealed that 80,334 lessons were lost over the course of the last academic year. “That’s all the learning that is really impossible to get back,” she said. “It’s gone. They’ve lost it. Even one week out of school for a holiday equates to 30 lessons.” A number of schools sent out letters reminding parents about the rules governing unauthorised absences.
The Jersey Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (JSPCA) applied to establish dog kennels and related facilities for a maximum of 100 dogs by converting two barns that form part of a former dairy farm on La Rue de Crabbé. The JSPCA’s plans included a very high specification of acoustic insulation for the facility. The JSPCA operates an animal shelter, taking in homeless or unwanted dogs, and is also a commercial kennel for day and long-term boarding of pet dogs. It has been looking at options for relocating from town to a purpose built facility for some time. The Department for the Environment received nine letters of support and 60 letters objecting to the application.
Most concerns centred on noise and increased traffic. Many residents attended a Planning Committee meeting in person to express their views. In its report, the Planning department stated that the application could be justified under the Island Plan as the re-use of a redundant site and recommended its approval. The Planning Committee expressed its support for the work of the JSPCA but members were concerned about the impact of extra traffic on the surrounding country lanes and possible noise from the dogs. When the Planning department and the Planning Committee reach a different decision about an application, it usually comes back to the next meeting of the committee, so members can formally confirm their reasons for refusal, and then issue the decision notice. However, the applicant withdrew the application.
Mont a L’Abbe school receives new Lord’s Taveners minibus The Jersey Lady Tavener’s recently hosted the Lord Taveners, Head of Regions, Amanda White and Chair of Regions for the Lady Taveners, Gloria Passannante. Joining the team was Vince Brand from Essex Auto Group and Lisa Spurway to present a new accessible minibus to the Mont a l’Abbe School. The new accessible minibus, funded by the Jersey Lady Taveners and National Lord’s Taverners, will be a vital lifeline for pupils to get out and experience their local community. The school provides a broad and balanced education for children with severe or profound and multiple learning difficulties aged 3-19.
Head Teacher at Mont a l’Abbe School, Sharon Eddie, said: “We are very grateful for the very positive relationship we have had with The Lord and Lady Taverners for many years.cThis specially adapted vehicle has surpassed all our expectations, our children especially like the therapeutic blue lighting, the tactile warm feel of the interior surfaces and the tail lift which enables all children including those in wheelchairs to travel safely together. “I know that the children will have many happy journeys to and from school each day in our new bus, and will enjoy visiting places around our beautiful island when participating in school projects and sporting activities.”

Hair colour is our industries most popular service. With just over 70% of ladies and men {yes I did say men} colouring their hair regularly. Then it made sense, of course you are always going to get the competition with home kits versus a salon professional hair colour, but what do you choose? I’ve lost count of how many hair rescues I have done usually around the festive season when money is tight - so you decide, is it a false economy? There is always going to be a market for colour, we as a nation definitely do not want to ‘grow old gracefully’ but surely you would not want to risk your most precious attribute? As a professional stylist, we have the tools, knowledge and products to change a clients look dramatically, but safely. I say safely as we know allergic reactions can cause untold damage with stories every day about
allergic reactions and hair breakage. With hundreds of colour to choose from, how do you know which colour suits you? As I explained to a client the other day, we all have different skin tones and base colours to our own hair naturally. With colour swatches that can be put against your skin, our stylists can show what you will look like before you take the plunge! I had a lady not so long ago who regularly coloured her hair at home saying it was just so easy and, dare I say it, cheaper. The only problem was that over time her hair was getting darker and darker even though it was a light brown colour that was being used. My client was now getting a black and white scenario as her roots grew through. I had to explain that it is almost impossible to just apply colour to the re-growth yourself as they will always get what we in the trade call an overlap situation. You can imagine how delighted I was when I saw an appointment had been made for us to transform her. The
result was amazing! Our lovely client could now go a little longer between visits as this dark, dull colour had been taken out and replaced with a beautiful softer shade. With the help of colour additives we can strip old colours out and put new ones in. What is colour additives I hear you say? Well we have recently received an amazing product called Olaplex you may have read about it in articles, it’s huge all over the world, with many celebrities using it to change their colours from brown to blonde (usually a hair stylists nightmare) and now recently greys, blues and pink hues which can last longer, as before they would simply fade out. Massage helps lift depression Taking time for a massage is as important for people dealing with depression as it is for people dealing with arthritis, sports injuries and carpal tunnel syndrome. It can also help with feeling beautiful about yourself due to the relaxation of the massage and increasing self-confidence. More than a dozen studies that revealed how a massage can fight depression by lowering cortisol levels.
Can stress turn our hair grey? It has been said that stress can make you go gray, or cause you to lose your hair. But can it? Even though you sometimes feel like tearing your hair out because of personal, economic, and workrelated stress, stress isn’t likely to be the direct cause of hair turning grey. Most of us find our first 'greys' by the time we turn 30, usually at the temples, then later, across the scalp. While many people find the salt and pepper look appealing, others go to great lengths to conceal their locks. The grey hair 'rule of thumb' is that by the age of 50, half of the population have lost the colour in 50 per cent of their hair. When researchers tested this rule, they found that 74 per cent of people aged between 45 and 65 had grey hair, with an average intensity of 27%.
What causes grey hair? Genetic factors appear to be important in determining when we turn grey. Identical twins seem to go grey at a similar age, rate and pattern, however we're yet to identify the controlling genes. Early greying occurs in premature ageing syndromes such as Hutchinson's-progeria and Werner syndrome, where every aspect
ageing in the body is accelerated. Premature greying can also be seen in people affected by pernicious anaemia, autoimmune thyroid disease or Down syndrome.
Stress and grey hair... Legend has it that Marie Antoinette’s hair turned white the night before she was guillotined. Presumably the stress of impending decapitation caused her locks to lose color within hours. Extremely unlikely, scientists say, but stress may play a role in a more gradual graying process. “It’s the gradual depletion of melanocyte stem cells that leads to the loss of pigment.” says David Fisher, professor of pediatrics at Harvard Medical School. Does stress accelerate this demise of the melanocyte population? “It is not so simple,” Fisher says, noting that the
process of graying is a multivariable equation. Stress hormones may impact the survival and/or activity of melanocytes, but no clear link has been found between stress and gray hair. In short, scientists are beginning to gather clues that stress can hasten the graying process, but there is no scientific evidence demonstrating a cause-and-effect relationship.
So, why doesn't pigment production turn back on? At the end of each hair cycle, some pigment-producing melanocytes become damaged and die. If the melanocyte stem cell reservoir at the top of the hair follicle can replenish the bulb, this keeps pigment production going. But when the reservoir of stem cells is exhausted, pigment production stops and the hair turns grey.

Cortisol is the body’s response to stress, and massage therapy lowers it by as much as 50%. At the same time, massage provides many benefits and can also increase the levels of serotonin and dopamine, which are both neurotransmitters that help stabilize your mood. Results of a massage The International Journal of Neuroscience studied a group of people with spinal cord injuries who were also
suffering from depression. Twice a week for five weeks, half the patients received two 40-minute sessions of motion exercises while the other half received two 40-minute massages. Both groups improved their physical abilities during that time, but the people who received massage therapy also became less depressed. So even while exercise has long been accepted as a means of combating depression, massage not only provides additional benefits but can also relieve stiffness and soreness resulting from physical exercise. Physical beauty is more than just good looks There is more to beauty than meets the stranger’s eye, according to results from three studies examining the influence of non-physical traits on people’s perception of physical attractiveness. The results, which show that people perceive physical appeal differently when they look at those they know versus strangers. In many studies evaluating physical attractiveness, people are often shown an array of strangers’ photos, computer-generated images or line drawings and asked to identify which ones, based on differences in physical features, are most attractive. Results from these studies suggest that physically attractive traits include high degrees of bilateral facial
symmetries, such as eyes that are identical in shape and size, and waist-to-hip ratios of 0.7 for women and 0.9 for men. You can find study after study that focuses on which waistto-hip ratios or particular facial features people find physically attractive, and these studies have captured popular attention. While studies do show which features people find physically appealing after just a glance, they overlook the non-physical traits that may influence a person’s perception of another’s beauty over time. In other words, people may see physical attractiveness differently when they know that person’s other qualities, usually invisible to strangers.

Eat your pumpkin Pumpkin carving for Halloween? Cutting scary faces into the squash may be a fun activity to do with the kids, or your friends – we’re not judging, but make sure you reap the full benefits of this vitamin packed fruit. According to the Pumpkin Rescue campaign, only a third of UK residents cook the scooped out pumpkin. As a result, 18,000 tons of perfectly edible squash is tipped straight into the bin every Halloween – weighing the same as 1500 double decker buses! Halloween is increasingly popular in the UK, Asda alone now sells more than 1 million pumpkins every Halloween! We seem to have ignored a crucial part of the US tradition though: cooking with pumpkins rather than throwing them in the bin. “With household food under pressure it’s time we rescued the pumpkin,” said Trewin Restorick, whose charity, Hubbub, commissioned the poll, and is behind the Pumpkin Rescue campaign.

Ingredients • 1 pumpkin, peeled and cut into large chunks • 8 sausages • 2 medium red onions, peeled and cut into wedges • 2 apples, cut into wedges • juice of 1 lemon
• Olive Oil
• 450 ml chicken or beef stock • 3 tbsp maple syrup
Instructions ■ Preheat oven to 200C. ■ In a large roasting tin, combine pumpkin, onions and apples with lemon juice, salt, pepper and a little freshly grated nutmeg. Add the sausages and a couple of
tablespoons of olive oil and bake in the oven for about 40 minutes. ■ Meanwhile, In a small pan, melt the butter over a medium heat. Whisk in the flour and gradually
add the stock and syrup, stirring until thickened. ■ Serve with potatoes, mashed or boiled, and a generous portion of gravy.
Sweet pumpkin bread This gluten free pumpkin bread is soft, sweet and melts in your mouth. with its rich nutty flavours and strong pumpkin taste, its the perfect autumn snack - just serve with a freshly brewed cup of tea.
Pumpkin spice Pumpkin spice is a staple spice of many autumn recipes but it can be quite expensive. Make your own with this quick and easy recipe and start making lots of tasty treats including lattes and cakes :)

There are so many things you can do with pumpkin, the obvious dishes include soups, pies and tarts but you can be as adventurous as you like. The seeds are also edible and are an excellent source of dietary fibre amongst other health benefits. Once washed and drained, toss them in olive oil or butter and roast for 45 minutes at 150C.
• Freshly grated nutmeg
• 1/2 tsp sea salt • 1/2 tsp baking soda • 1 tsp pumpkin pie spice • 175ml pumpkin puree • 85ml maple syrup • 4 tbsp coconut oil • 3 large eggs
Instructions: ■ Preheat oven to 160C ■ Combine eggs, coconut oil, maple syrup and pumpkin puree in a bowl. ■ In another bowl, combine flours, salt, baking soda and pumpkin pie spice. ■ Mix both bowls together until well blended. ■ Pour into greased loaf pan and bake for 45-60 minutes.

I wasn’t sure what to expect to be honest – it was a hotel, it was a week night and the warm summer evening probably meant that all the al fresco options in town were booked out. I was worried that the friend and I, with our 30 year shared eventful history, might be too noisy for our fellow diners who probably weren’t that interested in hearing about yet another stressful day in senior management or a trip down memory lane when we fought over a Wham poster. My concern was completely unfounded as the majority of tables were full and the diverse collection of people – hotel residents, local families, romancing couples and work colleagues - were all having civilised conversations of their own. There was a very contented but lively hum about the place.
To be fair, this comfortable atmosphere was also created by the evocative rich décor of the room – soft red silk materials swathed the ceilings but not in an over stylised imposing Lawrence Llleywen Bowen sort of way (enough tassels to clothe a dance troupe – you get the picture). Light muslin at the opened windows overlooking the Hotel’s gardens and across to the skyline of St Helier billowed softly and as the sun slowly dipped down, the restaurant was tinged in a glowing warmth. I could imagine as light and airy as Saffrons was at that very moment, I could also picture it being cosy and inviting on a dark and wild winter night. My friend pushed the (empty I admit) aperitif glass away from me and with an arched eyebrow, summoned the waiter over with a single look to take our order. She’s magnificent like that. Saffrons’ Manager, Laurentiu, is extremely knowledgeable about the menu options and after hearing our initial selections, he goes further to explain which dishes might better complement each other. The concept behind Saffrons involves healthy food and lighter meals designed to
get your taste buds tingling with interesting and unique spices. The restaurant mixes the Ayurvedic philosophy of ‘balance in all things’ and the talented team of chefs aim to maintain the intense flavours that result from authentic Indian cooking techniques and Asian recipes, all the while ensuring that what they serve is super fresh, wholesome and really appetising. Local produce features extensively as part of Saffrons’ cuisine, especially fish and seafood from our waters paired with locally grown vegetables. This keen focus on seasonality means that the menus offer ingredients at their peak, whilst also supporting local food suppliers and minimising food miles. Our bottle of wine (chosen from an extensive list that caters for all budgets) is now waiting for us at the table and we’re ready to let the food do the talking. And so with impeccable service (not overly intrusive but equally right there when my fork invariably clatters to the floor) the tale begins with the presentation of spiced popcorn - an amuse bouche that is just delightful.

It is all impeccably perfect - the portion sizes ‘just so’ ensuring that by the end of the three courses you are full with an elegant sufficiency and not rolling out the doors. The presentation is gorgeous – not ostentatious with an unnecessary swirl here or light dusting there – but with such care and attention that the food on each plate really comes to life. Everything has its own aroma, its own taste, its own part to play in balancing the dish and there is a vibrant burst of colour from the fresh vegetables reminding you that life is good and there to be savoured.
adventurous streak took me down the fish route to begin with and I marvelled at the fennel seed crusted seabass fillet, with crab meat polenta, coconut kofta and Konkani sauce. I then really went to town with a vegetarian main – cumin and garlic tossed dal panchmel and am so glad I did as I also quickly realised that there was a softer, gentler side to this innovative style of gastronomy. To our minds, the absolute secret of success? This cooking is the
bread? Laurentiu whispers that these are freshly prepared for each diner just ahead of their meal in the traditional Tandoor clay ovens which the chefs believe breathe a life force into the food. Magical. Desserts in Indian cuisine can be mere afterthoughts but the Manjari chocolate is a thing of beauty and deliciousness and we regretted not falling into its heavenly temptation. Because the timing of the service between courses was very well judged, there was enough wiggle room in our dresses to press on with the homemade petit fours served with aromatic coffee.

My friend’s pork belly starter with king prawns, scallops and a mustard apple chutney on the side, was remarkable. What a flavour combination! And her main course of Kashmiri chilli marinated slow cooked lamb rump was pure melt in the mouth stuff and, as she is the more fiery one with a penchant for pungency, there was the thoughtful accompaniment of Jerusalem artichoke Rogan jus on the side. Since I’m a bit of in for a penny in for a pound sort of girl, my
complete and polar opposite of the traditional Indian cuisine served up in local curry houses. No heavy, creamy, calorific saturated sauces smothering everything, with a plate of poppadum’s on the side. The fragrant spices are used to delicately season not overpower – don’t get me wrong, they still tantalise and tingle the taste buds – but this is about a balance of flavours that just works. Sated and surprised at just how wonderful our Wednesday evening was, we declined the offer of a night cap in the now candlelit bar (it was a school night after all) and headed to our respective homes to post our own version of events (with glorious pictures) on Facebook to share, share, share with all our friends and contacts. CAMRA - celebrating 40 years in Jersey Many of you recently attended the 28th Jersey Beer & Cider Festival at the People’s Park but may not have been alert enough to notice references to the 40th anniversary of the founding of the local branch of CAMRA (the Campaign for Real Ale). The thousands of you who enjoyed the three day event are probably unaware of how dire things used to be in Jersey for those seeking a proper pint of beer to drink. CAMRA started in the UK in 1970 as a consumer organisation fighting to preserve the last remnants of British brewing industry that once spanned the world. Back in 1976 a small group of dedicated local ale fans decided to establish a Jersey Branch of CAMRA. In those dark far off days there was only one small glimmer of light in the darkness that was keg (fizzy) beer, it was the Esplanade public house on the corner of The Esplanade and Anley St, the only pub in Jersey to sell real ale, and only one at that, Bass Ale from Burton with its famous red triangle logo. As the intrepid John Jacques
reported in the Post on the 8th of October 1976, about 40 people gather in the sanctuary of the Esplanade to welcome Joe Goodwin from CAMRA HQ and to set about creating the local Branch, during the evening over 20 new members were signed up and the Branch was duly established. The first Chairman by the way was Mr Jim Hardy who is still alive and well to this day, surely proof that real ale is good for us! CAMRA is now active in many other countries and follows many issues including the preservation of historic and landmark public houses, something we are sadly lacking in Jersey. In 1976 CAMRA had a total membership of about 5,000 people and was fighting an uphill battle, now membership is approaching 200,000 and there is a choice of ales/beers and ciders available that could only be dreamed of back then. So for those who started it all there will be a small celebration at the Esplanade aka Esso, now known as the So Bar, at the beginning of October. For the rest us who enjoy the remarkable choice of beer and cider now available in Jersey, please let us all raise our
glasses in thanks and look to an even better future.

The difference between real ale and other beers There are a huge range of different beer styles, each with different qualities, tastes and strengths, but each falls into one of two main categories; ale or lager. The key difference between ales and lagers is the type of fermentation. Fermentation is the process which turns the fermentable sugars in the malt into alcohol and carbon dioxide. Lagers are made using bottom-fermenting yeast which sinks to the bottom of the fermenting vessel and fermentation takes place at a relatively low temperature. Authentic lagers then undergo a long period of cooled conditioning in special tanks. Ales, which includes bitters, milds, stouts, porters, barley wines, golden ales and old ales, use top-fermenting yeast. The yeast forms a thick head on the top of the fermenting vessel and the process is shorter, more vigorous
and carried out at higher temperatures than lager. This is the traditional method of brewing British beer. There are over 5,500 different real ales brewed regularly in the UK. With such an amazing range of different beer styles it’s no wonder that tasting British real ales has become every bit as sophisticated as tasting wine.

Business is booming With a new brand and a further expansion, business is booming at MyPad. We had a quick chat with Paul Clark to see how things are going…

Wow, how are things now? Hi Paul, you’ve had a lot going on recently, but how did the MyPad journey begin? In 2013 we started MyPad.je as an online only business – basically me and a van – with my oldest son helping in the evening and weekends. It was a real struggle to begin with and I was responsible for every section of the business – including assembling furniture, administration, buying etc.
Well we’ve come a long way in 3 years, we’ve quadrupled in size. We now have 6 staff, plus me. We are also very focussed on our social media presence, we use it extensively to help push new products. We have just refurbished again, removing the first floor office to allow room for our new brand, La Forma.
A new brand? Tell us more… We found it difficult to even open a bank account as the majority would not touch anyone with an online only business. We eventually took a concession space in Morton & Morton and then in 2014 we moved into our
La Forma - Barcelona living, is a cool, new Spanish brand. They are big in Australia and Europe but have now expanded into the UK market. They contacted us out of the blue to see if we wanted to represent them in the Channel Islands.
La Forma has a contemporary, urban feel – perfect for today’s modern apartments. They offer an eclectic range of accessories and have every area of the market covered from beds and tables to lights, rugs and accessories. Every week they add in excess of 100 new products to their collections which is fantastic as people change their furniture much more regularly than they used to.
If I ordered a piece, how long would it take to arrive? Well, gone are the days where we had to wait 8 – 10 weeks for a piece of furniture to arrive - we can have a piece in Jersey within 2 weeks via St Malo. We’ve recently began targeting the UK by using suppliers who deliver direct to the clients door – it’s new but has begun relatively well and is showing strong potential. We are also looking at a new offer that can cover the essentials side of the home for the Channel Islands only.

Furniture Design History Furniture design has been a part of the human experience since the beginning of history. Below we’ve outlined just some of the different periods of furniture design which should give you a basic overview of the timeline of furniture design. ANCIENT EGYPTIAN 3000 - 2000 BC The hyperarid climatic conditions of Egypt were perfect for the preservation of organic material. There were two severe sides to the furniture excavated, the intricate gold gilded ornate furniture found in the tombs of the Pharaohs and the simple furniture for the ordinary Egyptians. ANCIENT GREEK 2000 - 300 BC Characteristic of this early furniture were highly influenced by the furniture of the ancient Egyptians but in the 4th and 5th centuries, once the Greeks developed their own style, furniture became less square and rigid and more curved and flowing.
MEDIEVAL FURNITURE 500 BX - 1450 AD The furniture of the medieval period is very distinctive in style. Its most notable characteristics are ornate wood carvings on the border of chairs and canopy beds, garish structural layouts and colours that are basically grey, beige or black. RENAISSANCE 1350 - 1550 AD The Italian Renaissance of the 14th and 15th century marked a rebirth in furniture design, often inspired by the Greco-Roman tradition. These designs were distinctly different from that of Medieval times and were characterized by opulent, often gilded designs that frequently incorporated a profusion of floral ornamentation. COLONIAL 1500 - 1754 AD Across the water in the United States, during the early Colonial period, most
furniture arrived along with the first immigrants. They brought furniture pieces typical of the Jacobean and Carolean periods in Britain with them, and then later made their own furniture in a similar style. These pieces were generally sturdy and heavily carved, many with turned legs and bun feet. ROCOCCO 1725 - 1775 AD In the eighteenth century, furniture design began to develop rapidly, although there were some styles that belonged primarily to one nation, such as Palladianism in Great Britain or Louis Quinze in French furniture, others, such as the Rococo and Neoclassicism were commonplace throughout Western Europe. In reality the term ‘18th-century furniture’ therefore refers to a wide variety of styles. REVIVAL 1800 - 1900 AD The 19th century was marked by the Industrial Revolution,
which caused profound changes in society. With increasing working populations in cities, the rise of a new class of wealthy of furniture buyers, together with the arrival of mass-production and the demise of the individual craftsman-designer, the gradual progression of furniture styles that had developed through the previous centuries was replaced by a raft of imitation or revival styles. ART NOUVEAU 1890 - 1914 The name “Art Nouveau” is French for ‘new art’, and it emerged in the late 19th century in Paris. The style was said to be influenced strongly by the lithographs of Czech artist Alphonse Mucha, whose flat imagery with strong curved lines was seen as a move away from the academic art of the time. Art Nouveau furniture used lines and curves as graphical ornamentation and hard woods and iron were commonly used to provide strong yet slim supporting structures.
ART DECO 1925 - 1940 AD The Art Deco movement began in Paris in the 1920s and it represented elegance, glamour, functionality and modernity. Art deco’s linear symmetry was a distinct departure from the flowing asymmetrical organic curves. Art deco experienced a decline during the late 1930s and early 1940s when it began to be derided as presenting a false image of luxury. MODERN 1930 - 1945 AD Born from the Bauhaus and Art Deco streamline styles came the post WWII Modern style using materials developed during the war including laminated plywood, plastics and fibreglass. The forms of modern furniture sought newness, originality, technical innovation, and ultimately conveyed the present and the future. Words by Padraig Cahill

Auction buyers premium revealed Words by Stephen Cohu If you are considering sending your possessions for auction overseas then the following will be of interest to you. If you aren’t then just have an interesting read about how to charge money for a service you don’t provide, generally frowned upon elsewhere but perfectly legitimate in the world of auctions!
the point of sale, ie the price the item is sold for is not the final price but subject to a further additional charge. This buyer’s premium in many cases is now over 25%, 30% including VAT so an item sold in auction for £1000 will actually cost the purchaser £1300.
The buyer’s premium is a fee paid by the buyer at an auction even though they receive nothing for it. It is effectively a surcharge earned by the auction house for allowing the eventual buyer and the underbidder to inform them what an item is worth with only an inflated bill in return!
This additional commission is rarely disclosed to sellers when items are being consigned for sale because the buyer, not the vendor, pays it. In nearly all walks of life, an agent has to disclose to the vendor the total commission they have earned from a transaction. Not so in the auction business and vendors remain unaware of the additional money earned by the auctioneer.
These are a contentious issue since they were introduced over 30 years ago. The bigger auction houses have yet again increased their buyer’s premiums. This is the additional charge made to the buyer by an auction house on top of the hammer price at the sale. UK Trading Standards are currently investigating the fact that this charge is not made transparent at
For example someone selling a house at an agreed 1% commission rate would be furious if they found the estate agent had charged the buyer an additional 2% on top! If this was not disclosed then in all legal situations the vendor has the right to claim this additional commission back as the buyer will have reduced his price paid to allow for the additional 2%.
This is exactly the same as happens in auctions, particularly for items that have an easily determined value. The vendor ultimately pays the full commission even though they are only charged part of it. If an auction house disclosed to a vendor they were earning between 40% and 50% commission on a sale the vendor might think twice about consigning an item rather than selling it to a reputable dealer. I have never known an auction house to disclose the buyer’s premium to a vendor and even when I explain it they don’t understand it.
A Simple Example of how a Vendor effectively pays all the Commission: A silver tray weighs 80 troy ounces. Assuming the tray is only worth its metal content as it is worn or bears a rather unappealing inscription it would have a current scrap value of approximately £1000. A dealer may buy it for the metal to leave himself a profit of say £100-£150 so he would offer perhaps £850-£900 for it. Let see how that compares to an auction (Image below):
The table is split into two, the top half showing charges paid by the buyer, the bottom half showing charges paid by the vendor and the net final payment. The buyer has reduced his top bid to £630 to allow for the additional charges he must pay. The vendor has effectively paid commissions and charges of £363 representing nearly 43% of the amount paid by the buyer! No wonder auctioneers don’t tell vendors about the buyer’s premium! That is not to say that auctions are not a good way of selling certain items. If an item is of potentially substantial value but that value is difficult to establish without exposing the item to a wider audience then auction may be the way forward. Substantial value I would put at least £5,000. It is also true that occasionally lower
value items sell for inexplicably high sums because two people are desperate to own them. At the very top end, pieces can make breath taking sums at auction if there is sufficient competition. If there is no buyer it will remain unsold and homeless! It is all rather complicated but very simply in order to pay £850 total a dealer will bid a maximum of £630 in auction to allow for VAT and buyer’s premium of £220. The vendor then pays charges of £143 leaving a net payment of £487. £363 swallowed up in charges! Sensible advice is never sell silver that has a fixed metal value or gold or gold bullion at an auction where a buyer’s premium is charged as charges will consume a considerable portion of its actual value. The same goes for items that would sell for more here like works by Edmund Blampied and pieces of Jersey silver.

DIY for fun For a significant minority of first-timers (28%), DIY is seen as a novel and entertaining pastime. It is not really work, but something akin to entertainment, shared by both partners and even the children in the case of young families. "It's just great fun" enthused one of our sample.
Over 400 potential informants were approached by researchers from Social Issues Research Centre (SIRC). Of these, 140 were assessed as being relatively inexperienced in DIY and fitted the required 'first-time DIYer' category. These individuals were invited to participate in an interview lasting between 10 and 30 minutes.
DIY as therapy "It's therapeutic isn't it? I'm always in my own little world when I'm doing DIY – it's great." Said one of the interviewees. For others it was their way of getting rid of stress after a long day at work – a way of switching off and using the repetitive nature of many DIY tasks as a way of relaxing. Others hinted at a similar process, where DIY was almost an end in itself, rather than just a means to achieving a better home.

Amazon were fined £65,000 for flying dangerous goods The online giant tried to transport lithium-ion batteries and flammable aerosols between 2014 and 2015. It was found guilty at Southwark Crown Court of causing dangerous goods to be delivered for carriage in an aircraft in breach of air navigation rules. The prosecution had been brought by the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) under the Air Navigation (Dangerous Goods) Regulations 2002. The items were destined for flights in and outside the UK in four shipments between January 2014 and June 2015. They were only discovered when the cargoes were screened by Royal Mail before departure, and seized before they could reach the aircraft. The court heard that Amazon had tried to ship a lithium-ion battery to Jersey on a day before 7 January 2014, and a flammable gas aerosol to Romania on a similar date. Another shipment, destined for Ireland contained another aerosol, while Amazon illegally tried to send two more lithium-ion batteries to Northern Ireland between 12 May and 3 June 2015. The CAA's general counsel, Kate Staples, said: "There are important
international and domestic restrictions to prohibit the shipping of certain goods that pose a flight safety risk. "These dangerous goods include lithium batteries, which are banned from being transported as mail or cargo on a passenger aircraft unless they are installed in or packed with equipment." Prosecutor Martin Goudie, told the court: "Under the right circumstances the batteries, even new, undamaged batteries, could overheat, potentially causing burns, explosion or a fire." In a statement, Amazon said: "We ship millions of products every week and are confident in the sophisticated technologies and processes we have developed to detect potential shipping hazards. We are constantly working to further improve and will continue to work with the CAA in this area."

Two prestigious office buildings have been sold Two prominent buildings at Liberty Wharf, Liberation House and Windward House, have been sold for £34m. The Channel Islands Property Fund, a specialist Channel Islands’ real estate investment company, completed the purchase of the two buildings together with 51 parking spaces. Built in 2007, Liberation House, which measures more than 61,000 sq.ft. over six storeys, is let to a number of tenants including Ernst & Young and Moore Management. BDO is the sole tenant of Windward House, which measures
23,500 sq.ft. ‘These two properties fit perfectly with the Channel Islands Property Fund portfolio, which includes offices in Seaton Place and on the Esplanade in Jersey and Regency Court, Glategny Court and Carey House in Guernsey; as well as Fort Anne in the Isle of Man. ‘The fund continues to grow in popularity with investors who want a solid and stable investment option,’ said Jon Ravenscroft, group chief executive officer of Ravenscroft, which acts as investment manager to the Channel Islands Property Fund.
Employment market is back on track post recession Jersey’s employment market is showing excellent signs of growth across all local sectors, says Gina Le Prevost, CEO of AP Group, a leading global recruitment firm with three specialist divisions in Jersey – AP Personnel, AP Executive and AP Technical. This comes in response to the warnings that the island’s finance sector faces an uncertain future following Brexit. “We are delighted to report that currently the supply and demand for jobs created by clients since the beginning of 2016 far exceeds the previous years’ figures. It is the best competitive job market I have seen in a long while in Jersey
– and is increasing rather than decreasing,” says Gina. For example in the past six months, local clients have approached AP Personnel (specialist junior to midmanagement level finance and commercial recruitment division) to assist them with a number of junior level roles suitable for graduates and school leavers, whilst offering financial support to new recruits with regards to professional training. “Junior level roles have always been very difficult to find for school leavers since the 2008 downturn; it is very encouraging that this year local companies have shown the confidence to employ and
train new staff once again. The signs are very clear to us – the island currently has more jobs to fill than the available talent in Jersey, particularly for roles which require candidates with 5 years or more experience such as mid-level administration and accounting functions.” However, she adds, the local government needs to entice non-locals and professionally qualified workers to fill some of the vacancies in areas where there is a skill shortage, particularly qualified accountants, lawyers and funds/ trust professionals. “It is important that the local companies are granted enough

Brexit, data protection and digital The Treasury Minister has approved growth funding for three initiatives: to develop a governmental Brexit planning unit; to enable the Island to respond to new European data protection requirements; and to further develop businesses and skills within the digital sector. The first allocation of £1.75m will ensure the right resources are in place to allow Jersey’s Government to understand and deal with issues arising from Brexit. The second allocation of £324,000 will enable Jersey to respond to the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation. The third allocation of £107,000 will help further develop on-Island digital businesses and skills.

Planning law - next steps The Minister for the Environment is carrying out a full review of the permitted development law in stages. This legislation governs what you can and can’t do without planning permission.
