Warning about threat to local wildlife The Department of the Environment, Jersey Water and the Jersey Fresh Water Angling Association are backing a national campaign to raise awareness of the damage to local wildlife from invasive species. In the past five years the problem of alien species affecting Jersey has increased substantially. In particular, many plants, are causing extensive harm. It was one of the issues discussed at the British Irish Council Environment meeting in Dublin. Member countries are raising awareness of the risks invasive species pose, and the problems aquatic plants in particular, can cause to our environment. A British body – the Non-Native Species Secretariat reports on progress and monitor trends in nonnative species data. It warns that the number of non-native 'invasive' species in the wild is increasing, with the potential for serious longterm ecological implications for local biodiversity. It's launched a national campaign called 'Check, Clean and Dry' which aims to raise awareness of the harm that can be caused when fish and pond plants are moved from one body of water to another – for example, from a domestic aquarium to a local pond or reservoir, or between two ponds on unclean Wellington boots. that smoking is bad for their health and it’s well recognised that smoking accounts for nearly a fifth of all cancers. But what smokers may not realise is how quickly they’ll feel the benefits of stopping smoking. “For example, people breathe more easily and cough less when they give up smoking because their lung capacity improves and that improvement starts within hours. “When someone is in their 20s or

30s, the effect of smoking on their lung capacity may not be noticeable until they go for a run, but lung capacity naturally diminishes with age. So in later years, having maximum lung capacity can mean the difference between having an active, healthy old age and wheezing when going for a walk or when climbing stairs. It’s never too late to stop smoking and that’s what our service is here for – to help smokers to quit.”

Plans to make the prison ‘smoke-free’ are underway La Moye prison is preparing to become completely smoke-free by the end of this year. The Minister for Home Affairs has announced the news following the release of a new consensus statement for Jersey in which top health professionals have signed up to about the use of e-cigarettes. Health professionals and key partners in Jersey have agreed, for the first time, a new ‘consensus statement’, over the current understanding about e-cigarettes. E-cigarettes will now be regarded as an acceptable choice for prisoners to help them to stop smoking. Home Affairs Minister Deputy Kristina Moore said: “Our prison service started its journey to be smokefree in 2013, when smoking inside the prison’s secure perimeter was banned for all staff and prisoners were restricted to smoking in individual cells or in the open air exercise yards. “I am really pleased to announce that our prison service will now be making the commitment to improve the health of both staff and prisoners by seeking

to make La Moye prison completely smoke-free by the end of this year and the start of 2019. We will be supporting the prisoner population by offering increased smoking cessation and alternative support services in the run up to, and after the smoke-free date.” Deputy Moore added: “Further to the recent releases of the public health consensus statement on the use of e-cigarettes, we will also be permitting the sale of ‘prison safe’ e-cigarette devices to prisoners to ensure they have similar access as the general public to products that, for smokers, are less harmful than smoking tobacco on their journey to stopping smoking altogether.” The Islands latest Tobacco Strategy recognises that smoking is still a leading cause of preventable death and disease in Jersey, causing around 140 deaths a year and around 1,000 Hospital admissions estimated to be directly attributable to smoking. The Tobacco Strategy also recognises

the particularly high rate of smoking amongst prisoners. Around four fifths of all new admissions are smokers, and there will be a need to offer ongoing support to stop smoking. Dr. Linda Diggle, head of preventive services, added: “A smoke free prison environment will be a good opportunity for prisoners to improve their health and get support for stopping smoking for good. Stop smoking nurse specialists have been running stop smoking group sessions in prison working to reduce the high rate of smoking amongst prisoners. Success so far has been above what would have expected, that is, 40% of the prisoners were validated as quit by carbon monoxide monitoring at four weeks and an additional 20% also went on to stop smoking completely. Our specialist stop smoking nurses will be working alongside prison staff to provide ongoing support for prisoners to stop smoking both in the run up to going smoke free as well as once the new policy is in place in 2019.”

The States of Jersey has selected J3 Limited as pre-construction partner for the ongoing project to develop Jersey’s new hospital. J3 is a joint venture between leading UK building and civil engineering contractor Sir Robert McAlpine, Channel Islands construction company Garenne Construction Group, and infrastructure, support services and facilities management business FES Group. The partnership with the States of Jersey involves the signing of a pre-construction service agreement, which followed a competitive tender process. The new hospital has secured political approval to be built on the site of the current hospital, in St Helier, and £466 million funding has also been approved. The project team intends to submit an outline planning application in April and to begin work on site by the end of 2018. The Minister for Infrastructure, Deputy Eddie Noel, said "We are beginning what I believe is a very exciting partnership with J3, working with three family-run businesses which have extensive experience in working on major projects of this type. We will be combining the unparalleled local knowledge of the Garenne Construction Group, the

engineering expertise of FES Group and the international construction expertise of Sir Robert McAlpine." Jersey's new hospital will have 288 inpatient beds and a range of support services and outpatient clinics. The first clinical areas in the 50,000 square-metre hospital are due to open in 2022 and the hospital is anticipated to be fully operational by 2024, with the project complete by 2026. The pre-construction service agreement will cover work in a number of different areas, including managing the detailed design, calculating the target cost and programme and planning the site

logistics, establishing the supply chain and resources and ensuring the incorporation of modern methods of construction. Executive partner at Sir Robert McAlpine, Hector McAlpine, said “This is a tremendously exciting project and one which is of great importance to the people of Jersey. The complementary skills and expertise the members of the J3 joint venture bring to this scheme, along with the collaborative ethos established to date, provide a great foundation for success. We look forward to building strong relationships with the States of Jersey and the local community as the scheme progresses.”

Planning permission granted for creation of new hangars Ports of Jersey plans to build three new 24,000 sq. ft. aircraft hangars to lease to private aircraft owners were also approved by the Planning Committee. Committee members had previously delayed a decision on the plans so they find out more about the possible noise impact of the development. In response, the applicant had provided additional information and proposed improved noise protection for neighbours. Ports of Jersey thinks there’s demand for a dedicated, purpose-built facility from local owners and high net worth individuals and submitted an application for three large aircraft hangars on Le Mont Fondan, near Mont à la Brune, St Peter. Group CEO for Ports of Jersey, Doug Bannister has responded to the announcement. "We are pleased to have received planning permission, which allows us to progress with our exciting plans. This project will bring much needed capacity to service customer demands in the corporate aviation sector. As a business it will enable Ports of Jersey to deliver increased value and return from our assets as well as providing a showcase project for the corporate aviation industry in Jersey, attracting greater interest in our developments." Ports of Jersey plans to invest up to £10m in what is one of its most significant landmark projects to date. Manufacture of the three new hangars, which will be located on the western part of the airfield is to be undertaken by renowned Canadian company Sprung.

63 new homes at Beaumont Plans for 63 new homes at Beaumont were approved by Jersey’s Planning Committee. The application proposes building the new flats on an existing commercial site - the Channel Island Co-operative Society supermarket and other buildings and land in the area. A planning department report recommended approval of the application. It described the plans as a ‘unique opportunity to remove an unattractive building, improve a listed building, address access and transport issues and create a number of new residential units in a pleasant setting with access to a range of modes of transport’. The plans attracted 23 letters, some in support, others raising concerns about traffic, parking, scale and design and damage to the natural environment. The department’s report acknowledges that the flats will be taller than other buildings in the area

but says they won’t be overbearing, and adds that the significant development won’t appear cramped

because of nearby fields, parking and improved landscaping. Parts of the old Occupation or

T he Minister for Economic Development, Tourism, Sport and Culture, Senator Lyndon Farnham, has formally invited Ports of Jersey Ltd to assume operational control of the Jersey Aircraft Registry (JAR). The invitation has been extended following a review of the original JAR business model and negotiations with a number of parties over the past 12 months. As part of the initial fiveyear agreement, Ports of Jersey must operate the Registry in a manner that will best secure sustainable growth for the Island’s economy and in full accordance with international standards. As part of the assumption of responsibilities, specific objectives and targets will be set for Ports of Jersey and a monitoring regime will be established to allow the Minister to ensure that the Registry is performing as expected. Announcing the decision, the Assistant Minister with responsibility

for the Jersey Aircraft Registry, Deputy Murray Norton, said “I firmly believe that the Registry can and should form part of the Ports’ business model and I’m confident that Ports of Jersey has the relevant and proven commercial expertise to make the Registry successful. We’ve reached this position following some determined work behind the scenes by myself and officers. They have worked incredibly hard to turn around what had become, undeniably, a failing project, into a solid plan for future success.” Group CEO for Ports of Jersey, Doug Bannister, commented “Ports of Jersey is willing to assist government in progressing this initiative and we look forward to working alongside the Minister and his department to ensure the future success of the Jersey Aircraft Registry.” In 2016, the operation of the Island’s Ships’ Registry transferred from government and successfully

re-established itself under the portfolio of Ports of Jersey. In the past two years 1,900 transactions have been completed and 287 new vessels have come on to the Register, demonstrating the popularity of Jersey as a Port of Registry for owners worldwide. Mr Bannister added “Given the success we have seen with the Ships’ Registry now under our portfolio and the affinity we have with both the aviation and maritime sectors, this is a natural step for us moving forwards. Registrations of boats and aircraft often go hand-in-hand with those owners of high-end assets, so the ease of being able to register under one business management umbrella can only be of benefit to all parties.” It is expected that Ports of Jersey Ltd will assume responsibility for the JAR in April 2018, with required legislative changes taking place in the following months. In the meantime,

Ports of Jersey will work with government to determine how the Registry will operate, including the appointment of a qualified Registrar and the award of a contract for the commercial function. The JAR was first launched in the Island in November 2015 to attract registration of high-value private and corporate aircraft. Despite the marketing a n d promotion efforts, the response was lower than expected and it has now been determined that a new business model operated by Ports

listed building, will be saved. But the Department of the Environment’s Historic Environment officer expressed concern about the demolition and reconstruction of some of the building. The scheme proposes improvements to travel and transport and pedestrian safety in the area, funded in part by a significant Planning Obligations Agreement with the developer, Dandara. The Planning Committee agreed that the proposal would result in a comprehensive redevelopment of an unattractive commercial building, creating attractive residential units, and improving a public car park and access through the site and to the adjacent supermarket. The applicant company was praised for the amount of pre-application consultation work it had carried out with neighbours and other interested parties.

New agreement for Jersey Aircraft Registry of Jersey, which has the proven capability to pursue commercial opportunities, will allow the Registry to become a success.

Feeding gulls now illegal NEWS

Changes to a Jersey law to try to reduce problems with seagulls and other wild birds are now in place. The law change should discourage people from feeding seagulls and other wild animals which can cause problems for people living nearby. Under the Statutory Nuisances (Jersey) Regulations 2017, it’s against the law to feed wild birds or other creatures in a way that means they become a nuisance or harmful to health. Some birds and rodents carry diseases which can be harmful to human health. Gulls are beginning to build their nests and are attracted to places with easily available food. Seagulls are protected under the Jersey wildlife law and can only be moved by licensed pest controllers. The Department of the Environment and the Jersey Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (JSPCA) Animals’ Shelter advise the best solution is to take steps to avoid gulls nesting on roofs in the first place.

If they do nest, householders should call in pest controllers to tackle the problem early, rather than in May or June when eggs or chicks are in the nest. Director of Environmental Health, Stewart Petrie said “We get a lot of calls from householders and businesses fed up with the noise, damage from faeces, building damage, spread of disease and other concerns that could be avoided. We definitely don’t want to discourage people from feeding wintering birds, but it’s important to do it in a way that doesn’t attract feral chickens, cockerels, pigeons, rats, mice and seagulls. “If people stop feeding gulls and we limit food waste on the streets, it’s hoped these birds will eventually revert to a more natural diet and in time return to the cliffs.” JSPCA Animals’ Shelter spokesperson, Babs Keywood, said “We get many calls about fledgling

gulls. Whilst we will always attend calls to sick or injured birds, we advise caution if people intervene to help. Sometimes it’s not necessary and gulls in particular, as very intelligent birds,

will quickly ‘imprint’* on humans causing problems for themselves and the public.” All gulls, their nests, eggs and chicks are protected under the

Conservation of Wildlife (Jersey) Law 2000. Herring gulls are declining worldwide and are protected under international agreement. In Jersey, their conservation status is amber.

Driving and knowledge test for taxi drivers The Minister for Infrastructure has approved a policy change, which means that prospective taxi drivers will be taking the ‘knowledge’ test at the same time as their public service vehicle (PSV) driving test. To qualify to drive a taxi, the applicant has to be at least 21 years of age and has to satisfy the Inspector of Motor Traffic that they are fit (health and character) to drive a taxi, capable of driving a taxi and have an adequate knowledge of Jersey. Currently, applicants take two

separate tests, one to demonstrate that they are a competent driver (out in a car with an examiner), and the other, that they have an adequate knowledge of the Island (test in an office). By incorporating the two tests together it will modernise the format and be less onerous for applicants. The knowledge test will be carried out in the car, with candidates being asked to drive to several different addresses across the Island. Candidates will still be required to prepare themselves thoroughly in the relevant aspects of Island knowledge

prior to taking the test. These changes make the combination test shorter and more relevant, there will also be a reduction in overall costs to the Department which will be passed on to the applicant. The Minister for Infrastructure, Deputy Eddie Noel said “We believe this update to the knowledge test will be welcomed by prospective drivers. The new format makes it more like real life, by mirroring the request for a driver to take a passenger to specific addresses.”

The Minister for Infrastructure, Deputy Eddie Noel, has asked for the law to be amended to change parking disc zones to paycards/PayByPhone zones. A review on the consistency of parking charges and restrictions on the main roads in St Helier, administered by the Department for Infrastructure (DfI), revealed issues with the remaining few areas of disc parking. Changing to paycard/ PayByPhone zones will reduce the number of different parking systems, making it simpler and more consistent. The review also concluded that in some locations unloading bays would better serve patrons. DfI proposes that changes be made at Commercial Buildings, existing restrictions are to be replaced by 20-minute unloading bays for

commercial vehicles and onehour paycard/PayByPhone zones for those visiting the shops and businesses and the existing six-hour disc zone would then become a twohour paycard/PayByPhone parking area. (Boat owners needing long-stay parking facilities could use Pier Road or La Collette car parks.) The existing three-hour disc zone at Mount Bingham near Green Street is to be replaced by two-hour paycard/ PayByPhone zone and the existing disc zone at Roseville Street changes to a two-hour paycard/PayByPhone zone. It is hoped that these changes will help reduce the current abuse of parking rules and provide a higher of turnover of vehicles in these areas.

The changes will come into force following alterations to the law, which will happen in the next few weeks. Deputy Noel said “We have these three small areas which are regulated by using a yellow parking disc. It seems sensible to bring them in line with the rest of our roadside parking, simplifying the payment options.”

I hope that those people who have access to the internet will give it a go!” Please note that online registration does not mean that you will be able to vote online on election day. The States Assembly do want to make

It’s a testament to the artistic community that an event of this scale can take place across such a broad spectrum of mediums and for visitors there’s no better opportunity to get a sense of the genuine cultural character of the island. I believe this event appeals to both locals and

holidaymakers, and provides a unique opportunity for personal engagement between Artist and audience.’ Before the studios open their doors from 23rd June, you can come along to a Launch Party, on Friday 22nd June, to see what’s in store for the two weeks ahead. Hosted at Beresford Street Kitchen guests can expect a night of music, drinks and entertainment. This year you can also look forward to a programme of special events, workshops for all age groups, demos, private views and more. Ben Robertson, the artist behind the Skipton Art Series communityinspired street art projects in 2017 will be returning to coordinate a collective of artists rolling out a third wave of new public murals on St Helier’s streets. street art will be produced to help you to seek out these artworks on a selfguided walk. Ben will also be holding a Street Art Walk during the Open Studios fortnight to give insight into the designs. Participating studios and creative spaces across the Island will be free for the public to visit during the weekends of the 23rd-24th June and 30th June-1st July. Information about the participating artists and programme of events will go live on the Skipton Open Studios 2018 website in spring. Aaron Waldon, Commercial Manager, Skipton International said: “We have supported ArtHouse Jersey for many years now as their community arts events bring Jersey to life and are something the whole Island can become involved with. Extending the scope of artists able to participate in this year’s Open Studios will no doubt bring new energy to the event and more importantly provide a larger platform to showcase local talent.”

2017 saw ArtHouse Jersey take a break from the Skipton Open Studios to pursue the Skipton Arts Series the umbrella term that encompasses the Open Studios as well as other

community arts events throughout the coming year. 2017 events included the successful Paper Talks project which saw thousands of islanders try their hand at the art of paper-cutting, and commissioned projects including the DIY Terrarium Project run by Will Bertram at the Link Gallery and Ben Robertson’s Mural Project, amongst others.

Citizens Advice Bureau benefits from Skipton Community Fund The first donation from the newly formed Skipton Community Fund has been made to the Citizens Advice Bureau, helping them to raise financial awareness in the local community. Skipton International have granted a sum of £1,000 to each of the charitable organisations in Jersey and Guernsey, supporting the good work they do and in particular the money workers who help those in financial distress or with mounting debt. The Skipton Community Fund which was launched at the start of this year, opened its doors to requests for funding from community led projects. The Fund wanted to attract smaller organisations that would not normally receive financial aid and where small sums could make a really big difference. Skipton were keen to support those initiatives that would look to improve people’s lives and benefit the community and our Island as a whole. The new year is a time when Islanders feel financial pressures the most, with visitors to the free advice centre peaking in January and February. CAB sees around 1,000 people every year, with money workers meeting an average of 200 individuals to deconstruct their finances and help them find a way out of the money pit. As well as contacting

creditors on their behalf, CAB talk people through where savings could be made and offer guidance on prioritising debts or the suitability of consolidation loans. Malcolm Ferey, Chief Executive of Citizens Advice Jersey, said: “We see people from all walks of life in Jersey, from varied cultural backgrounds, those with good incomes as well as those who are low earners. They visit us as we never judge, but offer free, independent and impartial advice. As a charity, we are always grateful for any donations we receive and are thankful to Skipton for this grant and recognition of all the important work we do.” Jim Coupe, Managing Director of Skipton International, said: “We are delighted to provide this first donation from our Fund to the Citizens Advice Bureau, since their goals are so aligned with our own. We work hard to promote responsible lending, guiding people through the process both at the time of their mortgage approval and further down the road. Decisions of this magnitude need to be carefully considered and we would embrace any organisation that promotes better management of personal finances.” Skipton International offer a range of offshore savings accounts and are one of the Channel Islands’ leading

mortgage lenders. The Guernseyregulated bank has been awarded a Gold Trusted Service Award for 2018 from Feefo, the second year running that it has been recognised by the review platform for its outstanding levels of customer service. Longer parental leave agreed New parents will get six months off work, with six weeks paid, after politicians backed new ‘family friendly’ rights. Mums and dads will get more time off from this September. Paid maternity leave will go from 2 weeks to 6 weeks. Adoption leave will be introduced on the same terms, and there will be 2 weeks paid parental leave to encourage more fathers to take time off. Social Security Minister Deputy Susie Pinel says the time has come to improve support for families and given them more flexibility; “The current family-friendly rights provided a cautious first step to enable mothers to recover from childbirth, establish breast-feeding and to provide protection from unfair dismissal. The latest recommendation from the (Employment) Forum is a much bolder step. While this will be a significant change for some employers, it is vital that the statutory periods of paid and unpaid parental leave are increased as quickly as possible.” Fathers and partners will get time off for antenatal appointments, and the right to request ‘flexible working’ will be extended to all employees. Parents will be able to share up to a year off work from September 2019. Meanwhile, the States have agreed another change to benefit families. Hundreds of single parents will be

£40 a week better off this summer, after politicians reinstated their Income Support. The payments were scrapped in 2015, but earlier this year a Scrutiny Panel persuaded the States to bring them back to help struggling lone parent families.

The move will cost around £4 million, which will come from Social Security underspends. Deputy Susie Pinel expects around 1200 claims to be put in when it comes back into effect at the start of June. Those affected will be told of the changes in letters sent out by early May.

Spring T

style

he spring/summer 2018 fashion trends are nothing if not bright, bold and really quite beautiful. In fact, it was a show season full of actual fashion moments, and that's not hyperbole. I'm talking about the type that had even the coolest fashion critics reaching for their Google Pixel 2 camera-phones. And the one catwalk that really set the tone, impressed everyone and just so happened to tick off almost every S/S 18 trend under the sun was, of course, Versace. This was the kind of collection that deserves to be attached to the word iconic, and that makes sense once you know that the whole glamorous affair was a tribute to Gianni Versace at the 20-year mark of his untimely death. His bold vision

and original supermodels came back to the fore once more, thanks to his sister Donatella Versace's creative direction. Jaws dropped to the floor. Shifting gears from the street's athleisure boom, there's a prettier, softer mood in the air, and anyone who likes to dress up will be thrilled. Minimalists and tomboys have plenty to choose from too: This year is trouser-suit and flat-shoe heaven. Most designers have eschewed all other eras to focus very clearly on the 1980s. The silhouettes are all in place (think nipped waists, strong shoulders and long legs), and the muses are ones you'll instantly be able to imagine: Diana, Princess of Wales, continues to influence highfashion places, with Milan based fashion brand ‘Off-White's’ Virgil Abloh citing the late style icon as his inspiration for his spring collection.

Uplifting, feel good fashion

How great is it to see bold bright colours and florals in the new season fashions! Walking into Ellis Collections is like walking into a colouring book with colours such as tomato red, sapphire blue and coral along with strong pastels and striking monochromes. If fashion could be called ‘uplifting and feel good’ this is it how can you not feel great striding out in a rainbow-striped Latte jacket or a bright pink top? Frank Lyman has splashed out with design-led florals on dresses and separates, whereas occasion wear and mother-of-thebride from John Charles and Luis Civit takes a more laid back, elegant palette. Stick winter at the back of the wardrobe and fill up with fab new fashion from Ellis Collections in Colomberie. Tel 732465.

Act now, before the nesting season If you had gulls nesting (and hatching) last year there’s a very high probability that they will be back this year. Gulls can foul roofing, block outlets and gutters and, when protecting their nests and chicks, very noisy! Exclusive to Letto’s

Letto’s has so many collections which are exclusive to them but my favourite has to be the Angel Whisperer (Engelsrufer) collection. This range is known for its incredibly popular angel chime pendants, angel wings, feathers and angels, but there are a lot more discreetly meaningful pieces in the range. The Balance pendant for internal peace depicts a lotus flower, an elephant (a luck-bringing animal in many cultures) surrounded by the circle of life. The silver cage contains a chiming sound ball. The Tree of Life pendant has gold and rose plated elements in the branches of a silver tree. The symbols are an elephant, a Buddha, three doves, a piece sign and a heart. Fatima’s hand is a symbol of protection. Its wearer gains strength, luck and blessings. As you can imagine these items are always in demand so be sure to call in soon. H. Letto & Son Ltd, 18 Charing Cross, St Helier. Tel 730952. Be sure to follow Letto’s on Facebook for news of new arrivals, offers and competitions.

The personal approach to training www.jerseypages.info

Healthhaus is so much more than just a gym, it’s a real community where no one feels out of place – if you’re having a tough day, the welcoming lounge is a place to sit with fellow members and just relax. Although there are many fantastic benefits to being a member of the Healthhaus community, their trainers also offer personal coaching sessions – each and every session offering a sustainable approach to wellbeing as well as fitness.

Let’s

Josh Dave has a degree in sports psychology and along with teaching classes in Kinesis, free weights and Thai kickboxing, Josh offers personal training sessions for weight management. ‘I believe in training the mind as well as the body as the mind is a very powerful thing. I aim to bring mindfulness into each and every consultation – your mind gives up before your body, your body can go 30% percent further than your mind. ‘Many people are obsessed with scales – throw away the scales, they will never reflect true progress. I encourage clients to take progression pictures and measurements instead. Measuring is important. Some people will gain weight in muscle but lose inches so losing weight is not always the way – you could gain 2 kilos but lose 5 inches. ‘At the initial session I ask many questions and expect honest answers. WHY is the biggest question I ask. The why is so important as I need to find out where their mind is – change the story and you change the mindset. I will work with a client for as long as I am needed. Once I know they are in the right mind set and that they can continue on their own, my job is done – that’s my goal. My favourite quote is “Being realistic is the most common path to mediocrity” (Will Smith).’ One of Josh’s clients, Karl, commented, ‘I have been to gyms before and had personal trainers, so I was very sceptical about this programme. Josh took a very different approach to what I was expecting and by the end I was a changed man. I have lost a total of just over 4 stone in 12 weeks and lost 5 inches off my waist!’ Josh is friendly, approachable and so passionate about helping people struggling with weight loss you really will feel at ease.

Louise Bailey joined Healthhaus in 2017 bringing with her years of experience of working with clients of all ages, abilities and levels of fitness. At Healthhaus she trains small groups and classes such as TRX circuits, HIIT, core strength, Boxercise and Kinesis along with offering specialised personal training sessions for those in rehabilitation. ‘I work with a lot of clients who are trying to cope with restricted mobility or who have been referred to me needing rehabilitation after illness, injury or medical procedure such as a knee or hip replacement. I tend to attract a more mature clientele as I’m a little more advanced in years which puts a lot of my older clients at ease – I have a hip and shoulder problem myself, so I can relate! ‘The first one-to-one session is a fact find; finding out about you, your medical history, lifestyle and your goals. If I don’t understand your body, I can’t write the correct programme for you. I always do an initial mobility test – can you twist, can you bend, are your core muscles fired up. It’s also important to talk through the thought process towards recovery. ‘I put mobility and stability before strength. It’s all very sexy lifting weights and doing all the high intensity stuff, but when it comes down to thinking about how the body is designed to move, everyone is not equal. It may be as simple as teaching someone exercises to help them keep fit when tied to a desk all day, exercises to deal with bad backs and stiff necks. ‘I get great satisfaction from seeing clients back to health and free from pain. Life is too short not to have fun. You never walk away from a session saying “I wish I hadn’t done that”. Usually it’s “I wish I’d done that sooner”.’

‘I love everything about books. I love the content, the way they look and even the lovely way they smell. I think a book collection says something about you as a person, and certainly my books are something I’d want to pass on for future generations.’ Jo Brand

Have you got ‘boot feet’? You know what it’s like, your feet have been encased all winter emerging in the spring to expose dry, cracked heels, hard skin and dodgy toenails. My personal avoidance plan involves regular visits to Forbes Feet. I first visited Claire Forbes over four years to treat an ingrown toenail. Claire is a HCPC registered podiatrist and as well as treating my toenail to the point where it has never bothered me again, she has kept my feet looking picture perfect throughout the seasons. At her beautiful clinic in the heart of St Mary, Claire has now been joined by Hannah Salsbury. Hannah has brought with her a wealth of experience and, as well as standard podiatry they also offer biomechanical assessment. Biomechanical assessment involves investigation into how your lower limbs function, looking closely for abnormalities and compensations. Treatment plans may be footwear advice, orthotics or onward referral to physiotherapists/ consultants as necessary. FOOD & DRINK

SEASONAL TRENDS Words by Trizia Clarke

I

t occurred to me this morning that my Instagram feed is 98% photos of food. Is this normal? I haven’t mastered the art of posting regularly myself. Those that follow my Facebook page will be well aware of that. What can I say? I get so excited when I try a new dish or make a new recipe, I’m too busy tasting it to take a photo of it. That’s probably just my age showing, but whatever the reason, I do still get incredibly excited about trying new foods and experimenting with new recipes, whether it’s documented or not. I love the changing seasons and I keep the Genuine Jersey Seasonality Chart as a ‘Book mark” at the top of my computer screen. Right now we can get local asparagus, cucumbers, peppers, purple sprouting broccoli, watercress and of course, our beloved Jersey Royals. Asparagus has always been special

for me. I can remember, from when I was about 7, running out to our big tree in the garden to check if the asparagus was peeking out yet from the soil around it. Day after day I would be disappointed until finally, when the days grew a little longer and the air felt a little warmer, I would be rewarded with a few strands. I would carefully snap the spears at the bottom and proudly take my little bunch of spears to my mum. She would make our favourite frittata, ‘asparagus and pecorino’. It is the simplest of recipes but so good. That time taught me a lot about seasons. The anticipation made the asparagus that much more delicious. Knowing that those little spears would only appear for a limited time made me enjoy them more. Keeping track of what’s in season, if you don’t grow it yourself, is almost impossible today. The supermarkets offer pretty much everything all year round. There’s always something in season somewhere in the world and if the supermarkets can get it for us, they will. In practice, though, this means that the produce is picked so much earlier, often unripe, to allow time for its long journey. Anyone who has picked a beautiful sun ripened tomato straight off the plant and popped it

in their mouth will know the value of waiting rather than buying those bland ‘January’ tomatoes. That’s not to say I haven’t bought asparagus in January, I have, but what I refuse to do is buy asparagus from Peru in April. Eggs aren’t strictly in season in the spring, but they have long since symbolised new life and new beginnings just like Spring. Chickens lay fewer eggs in the winter and more in the spring and summer, so it makes sense to use this most useful of ingredients freely right now. Whether you choose to make a frittata, an omelette or a tortilla, the simple egg based dish is a wonderful carrier of flavours and seasonal ingredients. A frittata is completely different to a French omelette. An omelette is cooked quickly on a relatively high heat with the fillings folded in to it in the pan and when it is only just set, it is gently folded over and served immediately. A frittata is really what the trendy folk are now calling ‘Crustless Quiche’! It’s cooked slowly, sometimes in the oven and it’s usually served cold, cut into slices. My mum would never add any milk, water or cream so that it held together well. We would sometimes have it in sandwiches, especially for our Italian Easter picnics, called ‘Pasquetta’.

“Keeping track of what’s in season, if you don’t grow it yourself, is almost impossible today.”

MY MUMS ASPARAGUS FRITTATA Serves 4

This recipe is just a guide. Feel free to play with quantities and ingredients according to what you have at home. INGREDIENTS • A large bunch of asparagus • 1 onion chopped or sliced • About 8 eggs • 50g-80g Pecorino Romano Cheese, grated • Salt and pepper to taste • A little olive oil

METHOD 1. Wash and trim the asparagus, making sure to take off the woody part of the stem. (You can keep them to throw in a soup or stock for risotto). Then slice them into small pieces. 2. Put a medium sized frying pan on a medium heat, add the oil and the onion and asparagus and cook slowly until tender. This may take about 10 mins. You don’t want it to catch or colour much at this stage. 3. Meanwhile, whisk the eggs in a large bowl and then, when the vegetables are done, add them to the

egg, along with the Pecorino cheese. The Pecorino is quite salty so you may not need to add any salt but you can add a little pepper at this stage. Mix everything well in the bowl. 4. Put the frying pan back on the heat and add just a drizzle more oil. Pour the egg mixture in and give it a little stir in the pan. The heat should be low to medium. (Your could pop this in a 180c oven for about 20 minutes if you like as long as your pan is oven proof). 5. Don’t wander off, but don’t fiddle with it too much either. Let it cook gently. When it appears to be almost set you can either flip it by putting a plate over the pan, turning it upside down then sliding the uncooked side back in or you could pop it under a grill for 5 minutes to finish off. Enjoy the longer days and wonderful produce. Remember to… ‘Mangiare bene, stare bene’ (Eat well to be well).

3 salmon dishes for easy weeknight cooking FOOD & DRINK

Something about salmon just feels right for spring. But the idea of making it at home, let alone on a weeknight, sounds a little scary — and a little exhausting, if we’re being honest. What’s our ideal salmon situation (aside from ordering it out at a restaurant with a glass of cold white vino in hand)? It would be easy, breezy, and delectable recipes readily available and executable at our own finger tips.

Sheet Pan Teriyaki Salmon This salmon sheet pan recipe is the perfect way to tackle your entire dinner in one fell swoop. 2. Lightly oil a baking sheet and place Ingredients: salmon, green beans and carrots in a • 4 salmon fillets single layer on top. • Green beans, trimmed 3. Spoon teriyaki sauce over the • 2 carrots, peeled and cut diagonally salmon and drizzle green beans and • 120ml teriyaki sauce carrots with olive oil; season with • 2 tbsp olive oil salt and pepper, to taste. • Salt and pepper to taste 4. Place into oven and cook until the • 2 spring onions, thinly sliced fish flakes easily with a fork, about 16-18 minutes. • 1/2 tsp sesame seeds 5. Serve immediately, garnished with green onions and sesame Directions: seeds, if desired. 1. Preheat oven to 200C.

Lemon Herb Salmon Burgers Ingredients: • 4 skinless salmon fillets or 1 large piece (about 500g) • 1 tbsp creamed horseradish • Zest 1 lemon and 2 tsp juice • Small handful dill, chopped • 1 tbsp vegetable oil • 4 tbsp mayonnaise • 4 poppy seed rolls, split • 85g bag watercress • 25g/1oz cucumber, sliced • Radish, thinly sliced

Grilled Salmon Tacos Fill crisp taco shells with flaked fish fillets, salsa and a garlicky yogurt sauce for a family-friendly weeknight dinner. Ingredients: • 1 tbsp smoked paprika • 2 tsp ground cumin • 4 skinless salmon fillets • 200g natural yogurt • 1 garlic clove, crushed • 2 avocados, diced • 1 red onion, finely chopped • 2 large tomatoes, finely chopped • 2 limes • small pack coriander, chopped • 8 tacos shells

Directions: 1. Heat the grill to high and line a large baking tray with foil. Mix the

smoked paprika and cumin in a small bowl. Rub the spices over the salmon fillets and put them on the baking tray. Pop under the grill for 8-10 mins until cooked through. 2. While the salmon cooks, combine the yogurt with the garlic and season to taste. In another bowl, combine the avocados, onion and tomatoes. Add the lime juice, season and scatter with coriander. 3. Warm the taco shells in the oven, following pack instructions. Flake the salmon and serve with the tacos, avocado salsa, yogurt and lime wedges.

Directions: 1. Put the salmon, horseradish, lemon zest and half the dill in a food processor, season and blitz to a fine paste. 2. Shape the mixture into 4 burgers. Heat the oil in a large frying pan and cook the burgers for 4 mins on each side until golden. 3. Meanwhile, mix the remaining dill with the mayonnaise and spread a little onto the base of each roll. Toss the watercress in the lemon juice and put a handful on each roll base. Top with a burger and finish with slices of cucumber and radish. Replace roll tops to serve, if you like, or serve them alongside.

HOME LIVING

PROPERTY INSIGHTS Working in partnership with your estate agent By Marcus Matthews of Indigo Estates When the time comes to sell your home it is important to ensure that you entrust your sale to a reputable estate agent, if the stress of selling is to be minimised. However, the most successful sales tend to be those where the seller and agent work hand in hand during the marketing process. Here are some pointers: • Be open with your agent about any problems with the property. Even if these cannot be solved, awareness of an issue could save a sale. • Ensure your agent is properly informed about which fixtures and fittings will be staying/going. (NB watch the terminology here: “staying with you” or “staying with the house”?) • Tell your agent if you have any direct buyer enquiries – it can avoid confusion over commission. • Ideally your agent should accompany all viewings, but if you show the buyers round yourself, immediately let your agent know how the viewing went, so he/she can follow-up appropriately. • Keep the house and garden clean and tidy at all times – you never know when you might get a shortnotice viewing, or interested parties peering over the fence. • Aim to be as flexible as possible over viewing times and completion dates. • Agree to listen constructively to your agent’s feedback and recommendations. As your selling agent, we share your objectives - to achieve the fastest sale at the highest possible price with minimum disruption to your lifestyle. So help us to help you. After all - we’re on your side!

HOME LIVING

Why is spring cleaning a thing? This age-old ritual crosses cultures and may even be in your DNA. Words by Sidney Stevens For most of us, housecleaning doesn’t rank high on our list of preferred activities. But come the end of winter, even the most chore-averse among us may find ourselves getting out the broom, mop and some soap for a good old-fashioned spring cleaning. That strange compulsion to freshen your home once the days lengthen is actually much deeper and more universal than an annual appointment with your scrub brush. Spring cleaning is not only rooted in several different cultures, but it has deep historical roots as well. It may even be embedded in human biology, as natural and enduring as the vernal flowers and warm breezes that arrive on cue each year. Natural spring purge In many ways, waiting until the balmier days of spring to do a major home cleanup just makes sense. It’s finally mild enough to open windows to air out rooms and take rugs outside for a good shaking. In other words, spring is a logical time for dusting, disinfecting, deodorizing

and decluttering the build-up of winter debris and dirt. This was especially true in the past, when homes were heated with coal or wood and lit with whale oil or kerosene. By the end of a cold winter, everything was covered in grime and soot – likely made more apparent in the glare of longer, brighter daylight hours. And going back even further, our earlier ancestors probably also seized on nature’s time of renewal to do some domestic renewing of their own inside dank, cluttered caves, teepees and huts. Seasonal biology The spring tidy-up bug is so common, it may actually be encoded in our genes — meaning the change of season prompts a biological hankering for home hygiene. Here’s how it likely works. During the shorter, cloudier winter days, lower light exposure triggers your pineal gland to ramp up production of the sleep-inducing hormone melatonin. Yes, that

“The spring tidy-up bug is so common, it may actually be encoded in our genes.”

feeling of going into “hibernation” during the dreary cold months is real. And because you’re not as alert, you may not notice the buildup of dust bunnies in the corners or smudges on your window panes.

When longer, sunnier days return in spring, melatonin production slows down and you “awaken” with fresh eyes to the dirty disarray around you and renewed energy to get cleaning. Interestingly, spring cleaning is

something we share with many animal species that instinctively refresh dens and nests after winter hibernation to prepare for new offspring and increased outdoor activity.

TRAVEL

www.jerseypages.info

A few days in

Fuerteventura

Known for its white sandy beaches and year-round warm weather, we visited Corralejo for a few days of winter sun, sea and sand… Fuerteventura is the second largest of Spain’s Canary Islands, sitting 100km off the north coast of Africa. Besides the white sandy beaches and crystal clear warers, there’s plenty to do on the island, including visiting the National Park of Jandia, Betancuria, Tindaya mountain and the windmill. Due to the constant wind, it’s also a popular spot for water sports, especially surfing, windsurfing and waterskiing. VISIT THE LOBOS ISLAND Take a 15 minute boat ride from Corralejo to the Lobos Island - a

hidden gem in the corner of the Atlantic Ocean. Here you can swim in the turquoise waters and sunbathe in the fine sands of La Concha beach or fall in love with the underwater reserve before enjoying a delicious paella in the island’s only restaurant.

WHERE TO EAT Corralejo has many eateries, from relaxed restaurants to cafés and tapas bars. Choose from over 50 different tapas plates at Antiguo Cafe del Puerto, a historic bar right in the harbour or enjoy a cocktail whilst watching the sun go down at the Banana Lounge Bar.

Lobos Island

WHERE TO STAY The Hotel Riu Palace Tres Islas stands in the spectacular dunes of the north coast, a short 30 minute ride away from the airport. The magnificent building enjoys a seafront location on Playa de Corralejo beach and boasts beautiful sea and dune views. With a buffet or themed restaurant to choose from, you’ll certainly taste the typical flavours of the Canary Islands too. Don’t worry if you have dietary requirements, the hotel staff are well trained and happy to help, ensuring you have a relaxed and enjoyable dining experience. Besides the excellent temperatures and atmosphere at the hotel, the Palace includes two fresh water swimming pools, a solarium terrace, Jacuzzi, sauna, gym and the “Renova Spa” health and beauty centre. If you

want a relaxing break with friendly, attentive staff then this is certainly the hotel for you. WHAT TO BUY Fuerteventura is a sanctuary for Aloe Vera as the plant grows naturally throughout the island. Aloe Vera has many health benefits (far too many to list here!), and is available to buy from several companies who are dedicated to cultivating and producing many natural products from the plant, including soap made with fresh aloe vera extract, coconut oil and goat milk. Fuerteventura is undoubtedly, a destination of elegance, relaxation and fun. Combined in a unique natural environment, this is a destination for couples, friends or families.
