A WEEK OF AFRICAN CELEBRATIONS Local charity, Friends of Africa Jersey CI, formely known as Africa Day Celebrations, was set up by two friends, Lainah MerekiPenttila and Lesley Katsande to help raise awareness on the African culture. To celebrate Africa week, Friends of Africa Jersey CI hosted an array of colourful events between the
21st and 26th May. Lesley and Henry visited Bel Royal School and St Georges School to talk to the children about the different countries in Africa. The children created African arts and crafts, wore African inspired outfits, danced to the drummers and participated in a presentation. An African dance group, Flame Lily,
even made a guest appearance! An African food stall was set up in King Street offering all sorts of delicious bites including South African Boerewors Sausage, Plantain – a type of sweet banana predominantly found in Western Africa, Chapati, Sadza – a maize staple meal in Zimbabwe, rice and spiced chicken.
On Friday 24th May, part of King Street was transformed into an African themed party with drummers, dancers and a fashion show. Glitter covered faces were created by the team at Mac in Voisins whilst the clothes were provided by Tommy Hilfiger and Weekend Max Mara available from the first floor in Voisins, as well
as creations by African fashion designer, Sithabile. To finish the week off, guests attended a gala evening at the Pomme d’Or Hotel, where they enjoyed a 3 course buffet style dinner and live entertainment. The buffet was prepared by authentic African chefs who really brought the taste of Africa to life.

More primary schools sign up to be ‘Sun Safe’ Almost 20 schools in Jersey are now registered as ‘Sun Safe’ Primary schools following a major drive to prevent skin cancer through education. With temperatures due to rise again, alongside high UV levels, officials behind the Sun Safe scheme are urging more primary schools to sign up to ensure that all children stay safe in the sun. The scheme, run by Skcin, The Karen Clifford Skin Cancer Charity, in the UK, is aimed at promoting positive sun safe messages to children and ensure that they are fully protected against the sun’s harmful rays. It is the first and only initiative of its kind to launch across the UK and has seen more than 3,700 schools sign up to the scheme. The process of gaining a Sun Safe School status involves working through these four steps to achieve certain goals supported by
downloadable materials: Advising the school community about a robust sun safe policy including using sunscreen, sun hats with teachers and parents acting as role models, looking for ways to provide shade in outside play areas and providing sun safe booklets for children’s school bags to help educate parents about the risks of UV, - focusing an assembly on sun safe messages and focusing lesson plans on sun safety Schools in Jersey who have achieved accreditation so far are Springfield, Rouge Bouillon, St Saviour, First Tower, St John, Bel Royal, Trinity, St Peters, St Clements St Lukes, Grouville, and St Martin’s, La Moye, Mont Nicolle, St Mary’s and Plat Douet are all working towards the award this year and have started work towards their sun safe status this term. The Jersey Cancer Trust have funded the registration fee for a
number of schools and are also planning to sponsor the provision of some hats for each of those schools. Martin Knight, Director of Public Health Policy, said: “Young children’s skin is particularly delicate and research tells us that sunburn in childhood increases the risk of skin cancer in later life. Children are at school five out of seven days a week at times when UV rays are high and can spend an average of 1.5 hours outside per school day. Schools already do a lot and all schools have sun safe policies already. However the extra focus on sun safe behaviours supported across the school community through this programme helps increase children and families awareness.” Marie Tudor, Business Development Manager for Skicn added: “Skcin are delighted that schools in Jersey wish to support our Sun Safe Accreditation. The scheme goes from strength to strength, every year with increased registrations from schools and nurseries and workplaces. Education of sun awareness is key. By schools adopting the scheme we are driving a cultural change with the next generation and also mitigating future healthcare costs and ultimately saving lives.”

Gas prices in Jersey will rise by 1.9% from 1 June - the first price increase by Jersey Gas in almost four years. The increase is less than the percentage change in the Retail Price Index (inflation) of 5.8% since the last price increment in September 2014. Moreover, the price increase will only add approximately £17 per annum to the average gas bill and even with the increase, the average annual bill will be £47 - 3.3% - less than the average annual bill in September 2014. Jersey Gas Managing Director, Ian Plenderleith, said: ‘The price increase is a direct result of the increase in the price of LPG (liquefied petroleum gas), which has risen by 22% in the last year. We've worked diligently to keep our tariffs stable and competitive
over the years, this being the fourth consecutive winter without a price increase for our customers. Providing affordable, reliable and sustainable energy to our customers across the island is our core objective, along with delivering market leading customer service. ‘As a company, we are always looking for ways to help our customers manage their usage and bills and have successfully implemented a number of energy efficiency schemes. Our popular Boiler Leasing Scheme is just one example of where our customers have benefited from the installation of advanced energy efficient gas boilers, which are typically 15% more energy efficient. The boilers can reduce individual carbon footprints by more than 35%, which is great for our island.
‘We are committed to investing in smarter on-island energy solutions that are sustainable in both the short- and long-term and benefit our customers through lower gas bills. We will continue to work with the local government and our partners to further develop competition and choice in the energy sector across the Channel Islands,’ added Mr Plenderleith. Jersey Gas' specialist customer services team are trained to help customers find tailored payment solutions that suit their personal circumstances. If any customer would like to discuss payment options or requires further information on the price changes, please do not hesitate to contact Jersey Gas on 01534 755580 or billing@i-e-g.com.

Jersey Post reaches finals of World Post & Parcel Awards Jersey Post has been shortlisted for two awards at the World Post & Parcel Awards 2018. The company has been recognised for the development of an automated parcel management solution, and shortlisted in the Customer Service and Technology categories at the 2018 finals. The solution involved the installation of an automated parcel sorting machine which linked through to handheld terminals and tracking software used by postal workers out on their delivery rounds. This combination of equipment and software has helped the organisation to enhance its delivery operation, generate cost efficiencies and provide greater customer choice. The most notable benefit has been significantly improved first time delivery rates and the introduction of alternative delivery services. In addition, the improved efficiencies now experienced as a result of the technology ensure that Jersey Post can continue to offer a sustainable postal service without the need for government subsidy in the long-term.
Paul Marett, Director of ICT at Jersey Post stated, “Most parcels received by islanders are the product of internet shopping and everyone in the purchase chain, including Jersey Post, have similar requirements – quick, seamless and hassle-free delivery. Thanks to the parcel automation project, our success with first-time delivery KPIs has improved enormously to the benefit of all stakeholders. Naturally, we are thrilled that our hard work with this project has been recognised at such a high level within our industry.” Now in its 19th year, the World Post & Parcel Awards showcases the latest innovation and best practice within the postal and express services industry. The awards recognise those organisations that are embracing industry challenges and maximising the opportunities that today’s business environment presents. The winners will be announced and celebrated at a gala dinner in London on 12 June at the Royal Lancaster Hotel.

Syvret House renovation Syvret House at Hamptonne Country Life Museum has recently undergone a major refurbishment and, thanks to the involvement of many members of the community, will now provide a unique window into rural life in Jersey in the late 1940s. The newly decorated and furnished farmhouse will offer insights into subjects including agricultural traditions and the farming community, day-to-day family life, language and religion, whilst also recalling the experience of the German Occupation. All of this will be brought to life through audio conversations between members of the family and visitors in each of the rooms, and the wealth of carefully selected objects on display. 2018 also marks the 25th anniversary of the opening of Hamptonne to the public, after it was purchased by the National Trust for Jersey with the assistance of the States of Jersey. The farm was meticulously restored with the help of the Société Jersiaise and Jersey Heritage. However, works on Syvret House were not completed at this time and as part of the recent renovations

the plasterboards lining many of the walls have been removed and replaced with traditional lath and lime mortar. A Victorian range cooker and timber surround have been reinstated in the kitchen, with cupboards of a local design replaced on either side. Modern electrical wiring, switches and light fixtures have been replaced with their period equivalents, all to give a tangible sense of the 1940s. Chris Addy, Sites Curator for Jersey Heritage said, ‘The appearance of the house and the audio conversation in the rooms has been based largely upon the oral testimony kindly provided by many members of the community. Their recollections have been woven into an audio script peppered with rich details that will connect listeners to a time where tradition, a clear sense of community and local identity were evident. Islanders have also donated objects and furniture to enhance the displays, and antiques experts have offered crucial advice and sourced numerous items which add to the authenticity of the rooms. It has been a great collective effort bringing this project to fruition, with a view to captivating the imagination of our visitors.’
INQUIRY DATE SET FOR FUTURE HOSPITAL PLANS A date’s been set for a public inquiry to examine the new future hospital planning application. The inquiry will explore the planning issues in depth to ensure the application is right for Jersey. It will take place the week beginning Monday 17 September 2018 at St Paul’s Centre, St Helier. The Minister for the Environment, Deputy Steve Luce decided to hold a public inquiry because the hospital application is for a significant piece of public infrastructure. The inquiry will be led by Philip Staddon, the same independent inspector who considered the first application for a new hospital and which was reviewed in a public inquiry in November 2017. Philip Staddon said he welcomed
views from any resident, business or organisation about the planning application for the new hospital and that the inquiry team will ensure that anyone who wants to speak gets the chance to do so.
Giving your views You can give your views to the inquiry in the following ways: In writing – contact the programme officer by 6th July with submission. In person at the public hearing – write to or email the public inquiry programme office by 6 July 2018 to say you wish to speak at the hearing Written submissions or statements of case should be addressed to the new
hospital programme officer Helen Wilson, care of the Department of the Environment, South Hill, St Helier, JE2 4US or emailed to progofficer@aol. com. Please include your name and postal address in your submission. The inquiry is open to the public throughout the week.
Application The application is for the demolition of Stafford Hotel, Revere Hotel, 33, 40 and 44 Kensington Place, including Sutherland Court, and parts of General Hospital/; Peter Crill House, Gwyneth Huelin Wing, link block, lab block, engineering block and chimney, 1960s and 1980s block on the
Parade, temporary theatre block and Westaway Court. Phased construction of new hospital buildings at the General Hospital site and at Westaway Court, refurbishment of the Granite Block for continued non-clinical hospital use, improvements and construction of one half-deck of parking to Patriotic Street Car Park, and all associated landscaping and public realm, highways and access, plant and infrastructure works.
Legal process The inquiry has been called because In accordance with Article 12(1)(a) of the Planning and Building (Jersey) Law 2002, as amended, the Minister is satisfied that if the proposed
development were to be carried out the development would be likely to have a significant effect on the interests of the whole or a substantial part of the population of Jersey. By law, the Department for the Environment has to follow a set planning process to ensure it provides a fair and consistent service to Jersey. This process includes considering all planning applications – whether they come from individuals, companies, or other States departments – in the same fair and consistent way, looking at all the relevant issues. The Island Plan, which is approved by the States, is the foundation for all planning decisions in Jersey.
Jersey Gas invests in new state of the art gas energy efficient offices at La Collette
www.jerseypages.info
Jersey Gas has invested in new offices at La Collette following 182 years at Tunnel Street, St Helier. The new offices, which illustrate Jersey Gas’ investment for the future, took one year to build and were officially opened in early March 2018. The move will enable the company to showcase its energy efficient and sustainable range of commercial and domestic products, whilst also allowing space for the company to grow. Partnering with Vaillant Solar Thermal Installations, Jersey Gas installed a renewable, solar thermal system and a high efficient gas boiler in the new building, to provide hot water and central heating in all communal areas. The system, complemented by a 100% recyclable stainless-steel boiler, is anticipated to reduce energy costs by up to 65% for Jersey Gas’ water heating. The company also installed a new gas driven ECO G Series air conditioning unit, which features
a combustion system that reduces Nitrogen Oxide emissions to an alltime low. This is the first unit of this type to be installed on the Island. To design, manage, build and furnish the new offices, Jersey Gas employed four local contractors: Axis Mason, Colin Smith Partnership (CSP), Mitchells Building Contractors and Bluesky Office. From an environmental perspective, Jersey Gas also implemented site remediation work to clean up the former, contaminated industrial site. ‘It’s a really exciting time for Jersey Gas and whilst it was sad to leave Tunnel Street, the move to our new premises supports our aim of investing in locally generated, sustainable and renewable gas products of the future. Our local contractors did a fantastic job and we are delighted with the finished product,’ said Stuart Crossman, Director at Jersey Gas. Jersey Gas customers have not
Schools combat stress with mindfulness course n internationally recognised eightA week course called ‘Making Friends with Yourself’ is being offered to students aged 11 to 19 to help reduce their feelings of stress and anxiety. It is an interactive and fun course designed to help them learn how to manage difficult feelings, understand themselves and cope better with the ongoing challenges of their day to day life. The course, also called ‘Mindful Self-Compassion for Teens’, is led by Steve Wharmby, a Primary Mental Health Worker with the Education Department’s Psychology and Wellbeing Service. He is a trained teacher in Mindful Self-Compassion (MSC) and is one of only 100 people in the world who is trained to deliver this course, which has been specially adapted for young people. Mr Wharmby said “Adolescence is
a developmental period, which can feel like a struggle for many young people. Teenagers have a heightened self-consciousness about how they look, what they say and how others perceive them. They can easily feel isolated or embarrassed. This course can help young people cultivate improved emotional strength, resilience and life satisfaction.” The first school to pilot the new course is Victoria College where 13 boys in Years 7 to 9 have volunteered or been suggested by their parents or teachers. Tom Fallon, mental health lead at Victoria College, said “Early feedback has been positive. The boys have enjoyed it and are keen to continue. This course is suitable for all students and is particularly beneficial to those who may be, for various reasons, more vulnerable to mental health problems.”

Brig-y-Don children’s charity renamed Brightly
Brig-y-Don Children’s Charity will be known as ‘Brightly’. Brig-y-Don Children’s Charity has always endeavoured to evolve the work of the charity to suit the needs of the children and young people it supports in Jersey. Consequently, the decision has been made to rebrand the charity to reflect changes and to ensure the public understand the breadth of the support we now provide. It has become very clear that if the charity remained as ‘Brig-y-Don Children’s Charity’, then the majority of people will continue to think that the charity just runs the children’s home Brig-y-Don House, which we ceased to do in 2009. It has been a hard decision to make, but vital for the future of the charity, as it will enable us to be better understood as we work to improve the lives of Jersey’s most vulnerable children and young people. Following consultation, the decision was made to change the name to reflect what the charity does today and to give a better understanding of who is supported. Later this month Brightly is undertaking an islandwide mail drop, to about 43,000 households, to make people aware of this important change. Our main aim is to continue as a small Charity, but one that can make a big difference, by both ‘Enhancing Childhood and Enabling Independence.’

Piquet House will home several artistic projects and a number of pop-up events, such as the ‘Who Am I?’ project and ‘Story Exchange’ curated by Sarah Taylor. The ‘Who Am I?’ Project lets anyone try their hand at creating a collage ‘portrait’ of themselves to express their unique identity. Inspired by the BBC’s Listening Project, ‘The Story Exchange’ installation involves Sarah Taylor interviewing local artists and their stories will be archived as part of a growing collection of Jersey voices. In the run up to the event, St Helier will welcome the continuation of the Mural Project, coordinated by local artist Ben Robertson (aka BOKRA). This will see ten new murals pop up around St Helier’s streets over the next two months, paving the way for Jersey’s first ever Street Art Tour. Amended marriage law on track for July The amended law that allows for same-sex and open-air marriages to take place in Jersey could come into force as early as 1 July 2018. It is anticipated that the Marriage and Civil Status will have been considered by the Privy Council by the end of this month. This would enable it to be registered in the Royal Court in time for an Appointed Day Act to
be put to the new States Assembly during the sitting commencing 26 June 2018. If adopted, the legislation would then come into force one week later, on 1 July. However, Islanders whose plans may be affected by the Marriage and Civil Status Law are advised to consult the States Assembly website to check on the progress of the legislation.

We’re thrilled that so many new artists have decided to take part in Open Studios this year, it is a testament to the artistic community that an event of this scale can take place across such a broad spectrum of mediums. For visitors, there’s simply no better chance to get a sense of the genuine cultural character of the Island.” Aaron Waldon, Commercial Manager, Skipton International said: “We have supported ArtHouse Jersey for many years now as their community arts events bring Jersey to life and are something the whole island can become involved with. Extending the scope of artists able to participate in this year’s Open Studios will no doubt bring new energy to the event and more importantly provide a larger platform to showcase local talent.” Venues including The Harbour Gallery and CCA International will also be presenting the work of selected local artists as part of the art celebration. Participating studios and creative spaces across the Island will be free for the public to visit during the event. Directories detailing all artists and events will be available from early June. Funds to modernise the public sector The Treasury Minister has approved further funding to support the next stage in establishing a modern, customer-focused, value-for-money and joined-up public service. A number of projects are under way to accelerate the transformation of the public sector. They are all being funded from current and underspent 2017 budgets and include projects to speed up the pace of change in Children’s Services, to support the upcoming Ofsted report on Children’s Services, to enable culture change
throughout the organisation, to modernise financial management and to ensure best practice during the recruitment of senior leaders. Senator Alan Maclean has agreed to transfer up to £300,000 to transform Communications and Engagement. A new ‘one government’ Communications function, under a Director of Communications, was approved by the Corporate Strategy Board in January. This follows a detailed audit that found the existing structure perpetuates duplication,
inconsistency, silo working, extensive spend on external agencies, and poor staff engagement. This transfer provides interim funding for the Director of Communications role and resources for the new unified Communications function. The proposed new ‘one government’ structure also includes a new Director of Local Services to improve engagement with parishes, the third sector and islanders, and to help design the new services for the proposed Department of Customer and Local Services.

Stephen's work will be displayed with over 400 works of art at the prestigious Mall Galleries in Central London this July. Stephens was recognised for his contribution to the art world by being made an Associate Member of the Guild of Aviation Artists. ‘The Forgotten Heroes’ a Hawker Hurricane themed black and white drawing and ‘The Fargo Express’ a Spitfire themed mixed media piece will be shown at the exhibition, which is the largest of its kind in the world. Stephen is also exhibiting his work locally at the Jersey Art Centre as part of the De La Salle Centenary Exhibition which will be running until the 26th May 2018. Dr Daniel Albert, Clinical Lead of JDOC, said “We believe that having the outof-hours service in its new location will raise its profile and make it easier for patients who require an urgent GP appointment to access it. “When the out-of-hours service is operating, patients can telephone us to make an appointment to see a GP at our new location in ED at any time until 11pm. Home visits will continue to be available at any time during our service hours. We are pleased to be able to continue to offer telephone advice anytime, completely free-ofcharge. When patients call for advice, they can rest assured that they will be speaking to a local GP. Relocating to ED enables patients to obtain appropriate treatment from the appropriate doctor at the appropriate place. ” Rob Sainsbury, Managing Director of
Jersey General Hospital, added “We’re excited about the new JDOC location in the Emergency Department. The former location at the other end of the building created a geographical barrier to the provision of out-of-hours urgent care. Now the two services can work more closely together, which can only benefit patients.” The Emergency Department will continue to treat those with ailments such as serious injuries and major bites or cuts, as well as emergencies such as chest pains, strokes, breathing difficulties and severe bleeding. Most other problems can be handled by a GP. Patients are invited to call JDOC to discuss their symptoms if they are not sure. The cost of seeing a GP out-of-hours is unchanged. Appointments for Jersey residents, with health cards, cost £56, while home visits cost £112 (daytime hours up to 11pm) or £143 (overnight hours 11pm to 8am).

Protect your eyes from harmful rays
To protect your eyes from harmful solar radiation, sunglasses should block 100 percent of UV rays and also absorb most HEV rays. Frames with a close-fitting wraparound style provide the best protection because they limit how much stray sunlight reaches your eyes from above and beyond the periphery of your sunglass lenses. UVA rays can pass through the cornea and reach the lens and retina inside the eye. Overexposure to UVA radiation has been linked to the development of certain types of cataracts, and research suggests UVA rays may play a role in development of macular degeneration. Various eye problems have been associated with overexposure to UV radiation. As an example, UVB rays are thought to help cause pingueculae and pterygia. These growths on the eye's surface can become unsightly and cause corneal problems as well as distorted vision. In high short-term doses, UVB rays also can cause photokeratitis, a painful inflammation of the cornea. "Snow blindness" is the common term for severe photokeratitis, which
causes temporary vision loss usually lasting 24-48 hours. The risk for snow blindness is greatest at high altitudes, but it can occur anywhere there is snow if you don't protect your eyes with UV-blocking sunglasses. Because the cornea appears to absorb 100 percent of UVB rays, this type of UV radiation is unlikely to cause cataracts and macular degeneration, which instead are linked to UVA exposure.
Do you wear prescription glasses? If so, you also need to wear sunglasses while outside; standard glasses won't shield your eyes from harmful UV and HEV radiation. Despite this, many people go without proper sun protection because of the extra cost for prescription sunglasses or the inconvenience of having to switch glasses when they move from indoors to outdoors. Outdoor Risk Factors: Anyone who spends time outdoors
is at risk for eye problems from UV radiation. Risks of eye damage from UV and HEV exposure change from day to day. Kids Need UV Protection Even More Than Adults: The risk of damage to our eyes and skin from solar UV radiation is cumulative, meaning the danger continues to grow as we spend time in the sun throughout our lifetime. With this in mind, it's especially important for kids to protect their eyes from the sun. Children generally spend much more time outdoors than adults. Also, children are more susceptible to retinal damage from UV rays because the lens inside a child's eye is clearer than an adult lens, enabling more UV to penetrate deep into the eye. Therefore, make sure your kids' eyes are protected from the sun with good quality sunglasses. Also, encourage your child to wear a hat on sunny days to further reduce UV exposure. Look for sunglasses that block
100 percent of UV rays and that also absorb most HEV rays. Your optician can help you choose the best sunglass lenses for your needs. To protect as much of the delicate skin around your eyes as possible, try at least one pair of sunglasses with large lenses or a close-fitting wraparound style. Depending on your outdoor lifestyle, you also may want to explore performance sunglasses or sport sunglasses. The amount of UV protection sunglasses provide is unrelated to the color and darkness of the lenses. For
example, a light amber-coloured lens can provide the same UV protection as a dark grey lens. But for HEV protection, colour does matter. Most sunglass lenses that block a significant amount of blue light will be bronze, copper or reddish-brown. Again, your optician can help you choose the best "blueblocking" lenses. In addition to sunglasses, wearing a wide brimmed hat on sunny days can reduce your eyes' exposure to UV and HEV rays by up to 50 x. Nicola Jenkins, Harry Foster Opticians

Eggs and nests can only be removed by license, so give Absolute Pest Control a call. They will remove the nests or, if eggs have already been laid, they are replaced with plastic eggs – when the gull finally rejects these the nest is usually abandoned. With the warmer weather here, Howard Durell and his team have also been getting loads of calls about ants and other insects which have been taking up residence in homes, gardens and businesses. I absolutely love the linen pictured. Vetono is a company that produces simple yet stylish garments that ooze quality. The top comes in mint, pale blue and white, and a grey and white stripe – the harem pant in white and navy. Linen is the world’s strongest natural fibre and because, like cotton, it has a natural affinity to moisture this is one of the reasons why it is so comfortable to wear in warm weather. A good quality linen becomes more supple with handling and gains elegance and softens to a lovely drape. However the key word here is quality and you could have a Vetono piece in your wardrobe for 10 years or more and it will still look as good as the day you bought it. Wear it soft and loose just like French and Italian women (and men) do for an uber stylish look. Pangea is another company producing quirky linen tunics and long line loose fitting jackets, if you love something different take a look at the Pangea range. New deliveries of Laurie and KJ Brand trousers have arrived this week, orders are arriving all the time to keep up with the demand for these great fitting, great looking trousers, capris and shorts from size 8 to 28. Get your feet ready for summer
Mondaine has created something very unique with their stop2go model by tying the watch back to its source in the Swiss Railway. The stop2go watch features a movement that replicates the motion of the original clock – the red second hand turns full circle in 58 seconds and then waits at 12 o’clock for the black minute hand to move on, before jumping one marker forwards, starting its next rotation. As if that’s not enough, there’s also a stop2go watch with new Mondaine BackLight Technology. Relective luminescence applied to the back side of the hands allows strong visibility of the hands at night, without any negative influence of the design during daytime.
You know what it’s like, your feet have been encased all winter emerging as the sun comes out to expose dry, cracked heels, hard skin and dodgy toenails. My personal avoidance plan involves regular visits to Forbes Feet.

HOME LIVING
PROPERTY INSIGHTS How to know when it’s time to put your home on the market By Marcus Matthews of Indigo Estates Are you thinking about putting your property on the market, but aren’t sure when or how? It can be difficult to know exactly when you should sell your home. However, there are times and seasons when selling your home is almost certainly the right thing for you. Whether your reasons are personal or market-driven, we’ve identified some of the best times to think seriously about selling your property. 1. Your family needs more space Your family may not be expanding, but if the people in your house are growing restless, it’s time to consider a change. As young children grow into young adults, many parents move into properties where each child can have their own room. Adding private spaces and larger rooms can also accommodate your family’s needs, so bear that in mind when you’re looking at properties. Knowing that your family needs more space is a key factor in determining if you should put your home on the market.
2. Look to the seasons The autumn and spring are known for being good times to sell your property, and for good reason. Potential buyers aren’t busy with holidays and Christmas parties during these seasons. The spring coincides with an increase in sunlight and a blooming garden, both of which do wonders for the appearance of your property. In the autumn, the fading light and
multicoloured leaves add a romantic touch that’s unparalleled. If you’re selling, try to time putting your home on the market with the beginning of the season.
3. Your family is expanding Whether you’re expecting a child or welcoming a parent, there are plenty of family expansions that will require more room for everyone. If you know that your property won’t be able to accommodate everyone, it’s time to put your home on the market. 4. You’re not excited to go home at the end of the day Is your home a place where you can rest and relax? If not it could be a sign that it’s time to start looking for a new home. Your home should be a place where you feel comfortable and relaxed, and anything less should have you looking elsewhere.
5. The local property market is flourishing Have you been toying with the idea of moving for a few years, but never knew when the time was right? Putting your home on the market when it is flourishing will increase your chances of a speedy sale. But how do you know when the market is flourishing? Speak to one of our property negotiators at Indigo Estates and also take a look around the island. Are there plenty of sold boards around? This is a good indication of the state of the property market.
6. You’re considering buying a new property If you’re thinking of moving house, put your own home on the market first. That way, you’ll be free to make

Competition gives digital entrepreneurs a boost Business
Digital Jersey and NatWest International are calling for all local Digital entrepreneurs looking for support and office space to apply for a competition which has already helped propel two start-ups to business success. The winners of the competition will receive a year’s free Small Business membership to the Digital Jersey Hub as well as a desk space for one year. The initiative from NatWest International and Digital Jersey has seen three young digital entrepreneurs develop their own successful companies, employing local talent and collaborating on joint business ventures. Now two new digital start-ups are being given the opportunity to win office space in the industry’s networking hub. The initiative has already helped last years winners, Snap Creative, owned by Tom Le Sueur & Sam Bullock and Virtex Studios owned by Tim McGuinness, develop their own successful companies. One year later Snap Creative has provided services to a number of local businesses, including Stinky Bay Brewing Co., Skipton Open Studios 2018 and Confidence Dental. They have a full time employee starting in May and are now looking to employ five freelance workers to cope with their increasing workload. In the last twelve months, Tim from Virtex Studios has employed a full time Virtual reality (VR) developer. The company has worked with Jersey Heritage to bring La Cotte de St Brelade alive through VR, and helped Autism Jersey, raise awareness of what it’s like to be autistic through a VR experience.

The event will be running again this year, collaborating with established local artist, Nicolas Romeril. Both businesses are about to move from the Digital Jersey Hub into their

own shared offices and now the hunt is on for two new digital start-ups to fill the desks. Tony Moretta, CEO, Digital Jersey said: “The two winning entries have highlighted the innovative and energetic talent we have in this island. It’s quite astounding what the two companies have achieved in just one year. A lot of what they’re
now working on has resulted in their meeting in the DJ Hub, showing the value of this co-working and networking space.” Joe Vasey, Head of Premium and Business Banking, NatWest International, said: “We’re delighted to be supporting this competition for the second year in a row. It’s amazing to see how much these businesses have
developed over the last 12 months. We’re entering a really exciting time in the digital market and if you think your business has what it takes to be the next big thing in this industry, this is a once in a life time opportunity, and I’d highly recommend applying.” The competition is open until 10th June. Jersey consultant writes book explaining GDPR Business
Well, the General Data Protection Regulation, GDPR, is finally here! You’ve probably heard all about the new personal data protection laws, Data Protection Officers, Data Controllers, Data Processors, the data breaches - and nightmarish fines if you don't get it right. But there’s also good news! The current belief among GDPR professionals is that GDPR regulators, when they call, will be not be looking for full compliance, but at how well you’re trying to comply. Hat tip to Brussels! You can now think of ‘full compliance’ as your journey’s end - not something you were expected to have nailed on 25 May 2018. So, that gives us time to take a deep breath and ask the big question. How GDPR compliant are you? Fully compliant, nearly there, made a halfhearted attempt, nowhere at all, full panic mode, or head in the sand? As a consultant, I’ve been around the IT and data block many times and when I talked to my clients about the
GDPR, they told me that to help them, they needed to get their hands on something that was straightforward, logical and easy to read. Something that would be instantly useful, whatever stage of compliance they were at. So, I buckled down and, over the last six months, wrote Jaz’ing Up GDPR! It’s a book that dares to be different. Everything I’d read while qualifying as a GDPR Practitioner was hard going - full of management, legal and bureaucratic jargon - sorry, did I yawn then - along with assumptions that the reader knew much more than they actually did. I also noticed there was, virtually, no day-to-day information for general staff, the vast majority of whom work with some form of personal data. So really, Jaz’ing Up GDPR! didn’t just dare to be different - it had to be different. As you’d expect, Jaz’ing Up GDPR! deals in a precise, professional way with the big issues of how management has to organise and act on the road to compliance. Technical terms and the roles and responsibilities of everyone
involved are clearly explained, and everything is referenced to the actual EU regulations. However, unlike other books, Jaz’ing Up GDPR! has specific sections that everyone can pick up and read. Staff can keep it on their desk and dip in, whenever they want to clarify something. There’s also a huge Q&A section. I made sure that Jaz’ing UP GDPR! provides solid information for companies and organisations of all sizes and all sectors, and it's written in a relaxed style, using plain English the only sort I know - to make it quick and easy to read. I’ve also made it lighthearted, with lots of odd contributions (with the emphasis on the odd) from my West Highland terrier, Jaz - and I hope the cartoons may even make you smile! You’ll find Jaz’ing Up GDPR! will make the GDPR easier to understand, implement and manage, both on a dayto-day basis and long-term. So my advice is; don’t see the GDPR as a problem. Think of it as an opportunity, a great opportunity,
which, once you get the hang of it, will generate major benefits for your

Logicalis CI awarded top international standard Business
Logicalis Channel Islands has been awarded ISO 27001 Information Security Management Certification for all its operational activities in Jersey and Guernsey. ISO 27001 is the international standard which is recognised globally for managing risks to the security of information. The standard is now rated as the preferred choice for creating and managing a robust, dynamic and adaptable Information Security Management System (ISMS). The certification to ISO27001 allows Logicalis to provide assurances to clients and other stakeholders that they are comprehensively managing the security of the information they hold. The standard covers the whole of the organisation, not just IT, and encompasses people, processes and technology.
This has enabled Logicalis to readily understand risks and embrace security controls as part of the everyday working practices that they perform. Chris Brown, ISMS Manager at Logicalis, said: “We’re very proud to have achieved this global standard. The Logicalis Information Security Management System helps to deliver a robust, secure and protected environment for our client and employee data, it allows for the effective management of risks and helps to attain compliance with regulations such as the General Data Protection Regulation. We strive to ensure our information management system will never stand still and proactively look to implement continual improvements that enhance our information security posture.”

across a broad range of sectors in the Channel Islands.’ ‘We have also worked closely with our Birmingham office on the handover of the Commonwealth Games from the Gold Coast to Birmingham, helping the handover to achieve great exposure and experience.’ Liquid’s figures in PR Week showed a 29% increase in fee income compared to the previous calendar year and a 13% increase in staff.
Jersey supports fight against financial crime Business
Jersey has become a core donor nation to the International Centre for Asset Recovery (ICAR) for a three year period, following a Ministerial Decision by the Treasury Minister. ICAR is part of the Basel Institute on Governance and supports global efforts to prevent and fight international financial crime and recover stolen assets. ICAR has helped Jersey with the repatriation of assets and has also identified opportunities for Jersey to share its experience in combatting money laundering in the international arena. Jersey is contributing £250,000 to the work of ICAR, giving Jersey donor nation status for three years. This contribution will not come from tax payers, but from the Jersey Criminal Offences Confiscation Fund. These are
the proceeds of crime, in Jersey and abroad, confiscated from criminals.
Fighting financial crime ICAR operates in a number of countries, building capacity in developing countries to fight financial crime, training investigators and anti-corruption officers. These include countries in Africa which are the subject of positive engagement with Jersey such as Kenya, Zambia, Tanzania, Mauritius, Malawi and Uganda. ICAR has staff embedded in anticrime and corruption units in countries which have assisted Jersey in obtaining information on asset recovery cases. ICAR has also helped to develop a tool for improving international cooperation over mutual legal assistance and asset recovery, which will help Jersey partner with third countries to
tackle economic crime.
Recovering stolen assets Gretta Fenner, Managing Director of Basel Institute on Governance said: “The successful recovery of stolen assets in international corruption and money laundering cases depends on the active cooperation of all concerned jurisdictions. We look forward to working ever more closely with Jersey both in relation to specific cases and on international policy issues of mutual interest.” Attorney General, Robert MacRae QC observed: “The International Centre for Asset Recovery plays a key role in the prevention and combatting of international crime on the global stage. Jersey’s decision to support the Centre demonstrates the Island’s commitment to fighting crime and to repatriating assets to third countries.”
