The passenger ferry that connects Jersey and Sark is out of service until at least the 12th August. Manché Iles Express has cancelled most of it’s sailings, after delays in repairing one of their vessels – and

another that can’t dock in smaller harbours. The Granville, which operates between the Channel Islands and France, won’t be sailing for the next few weeks. Manché Iles says that’s down to delays with receiving engine

parts needed to make repairs. The ferry operator’s other ship, the Victor Hugo, came back into service last weekend – but with a new command system that crews haven’t fully tested. It means the vessel can’t operate

routes to Sark, Alderney, Dielette and Carteret as there’s no assistance from Port staff the boat needs to dock safely. The Company says its sorry for the inconvenience and the economic impact the cancellations have had.

Pagan outcry over fencing at tomb site www.jerseypages.info

NEWS

A pagan worship ground has been damaged by visitors - and fencing put up to protect it is the latest sign of "disrespect" for the religion, says a Jersey witch. Rhianna Galvin Hughes said there would be uproar if the same measures were taken at a church. The owners of the 6,000-year-old Neolithic tomb, Societe Jersiaise, say the fencing will stop further erosion. They say the fenced-off areas protect "valuable" parts of the site. Mrs Galvin Hughes said: “It would have been nice if they had contacted the pagan community and let someone know what they wanted to do. “This is a very natural site and the

fencing they have put up takes away from it.” The site should be left in a natural state, according to Mrs Galvin Hughes, who says it is no more eroded than many other Neolithic site across the British Isles. But Nicolette Westwood, from the Societe Jersiaise, said damage to parts of the tomb, or dolmen, could move historically significant objects away from their original locations. “It would be the same as if part of a church were undergoing damage, and that section needed to be temporarily fenced off, but churchgoers would still have access to the church,” she said. The fenced-off areas, which cover banks around the tomb, were “probably

an original part of the dolmen” she said, but may contain piles of materials discarded by its builders, known as “spoil heaps”. Local historian, Tony Bellows, says the Neolithic “passage grave” dates back to the Stone Age (4,000-3250 BC). It was excavated in 1839, 1868 and in 1910 by the Societe Jersiaise who found human bones from at least three adults and two children. The remains included a complete skeleton found in a seated position. “It was certainly a site of religious significance, and is one of the two Jersey monuments aligned with the solar equinox, the other being Hougue Bie,” said Mr Bellows. “What practices took place can only be surmised as no records exist for the stone age. The alignment with the spring solstice probably points to rituals associated with farming, and

blessing the crops to be planted.” Mrs Galvin Hughes, who identifies as a fifthgeneration Romany Gypsy and hereditary witch, says the incident is the latest example of religious discrimination against her. “If it was any other religion it wouldn’t be tolerated, but because it’s paganism or witchcraft people react almost like they’ve lost their minds. They don’t understand it and they don’t want to understand it, so nothing moves forward.” She says Neolithic sites such as La Pouquelaye de Faldouet are used “regularly” by pagans in Jersey, including on the eight “Sabbats” or seasonal festivals in a year.

Amendments to the hospital plans have been submitted

The Future Hospital team has proposed minor changes to the hospital plans. The changes, submitted to the Planning department, are in response to feedback and discussions with the public, Growth, Housing and Environment, and the Jersey Architecture Commission. The amendments mostly concern heritage, planning, and transport issues and are intended to make the plans clearer or to improve the scheme. The planning application is a proposal to build a new hospital on the existing General Hospital and Westaway Court. An outline planning application was submitted to the Planning department in April 2018 after the previous States Assembly approved the location, the budget and the method of funding. Changes to the application include: • revising the design principles after feedback from the Jersey Architecture Commission and following more detailed planning of the internal clinical areas which has allowed architects to include more information about the external design • lessening the impact of the proposed Westaway Court by reducing the height of the building on Savile Street

• reducing the height of the proposed hospital building directly behind the listed granite hospital building (Block B), so it’s less visible from Gloucester Street. The amendments to the plans are available to view on the planning register. Future Hospital is a project to build a new safe, sustainable and affordable hospital for Jersey. The current hospital is no longer fit for purpose and needs replacing.

A public inquiry into the outline planning application and a highlevel, planning-based assessment of alternative sites will start on 17 September 2018 at St Paul's Centre. Work on the hospital project is continuing in tandem with a short Hospital Board assurance review of the current site to ensure the choice that has been made is sound and based on evidence. Tamba Park planning decision The Minister for the Environment, Deputy John Young, has decided to refuse the two planning applications submitted for the Tamba Park site. The proposals were for a new 27-unit holiday village and a four-bedroom house at Retreat Farm (Tamba Park) on land partly in St Lawrence and partly in St Mary. The two applications are linked as the application for the house requires the creation of the new car park, which is part of the other application. The previous Environment Minister, Deputy Steve Luce, called a Public Inquiry into these applications because he said that, if approved, they would represent a significant departure from the Island Plan. A planning inspector was appointed and a public inquiry was held in February and March 2018. The inspector issued two reports to the Minister. The first report identified several procedural difficulties with the application for the 27-unit holiday village, and said the application was not clear. Deputy Luce asked the applicant to clarify the proposals, which were then re-advertised, and further comments were invited. The inspector was asked to produce a second report, with a recommendation on the merits and demerits of the proposals. In this report, the inspector recommended that the applications should be approved. He cited several pros and cons and considered that, on

balance, the public interest planning gains were enough to overcome the concerns, including the fact that Tamba Park is in the Green Zone, where there is a general presumption against development. The Minister does not agree with the inspector’s conclusion on the balance

of the issues. Deputy John Young said: “Building a 27-unit holiday village would result in serious harm to the landscape and character of this area and the envisaged environmental enhancements and tourism benefits are not enough to overcome this harm. “This development also contravenes

the strategic aims of the Island Plan, which seek to locate development in sustainable locations. If approved, it could set a precedent for other proposals in the countryside which go against our agreed Island Plan policy.” The Minister concluded that the merits cited do not outweigh the very

significant environmental effects of this application, and do not justify a significant departure from the Green Zone policy adopted by the States Assembly as part of the Island Plan. He has decided that to approve the applications would set an undesirable precedent for the future.

SOCIAL WORK DEGREE COURSE FOR JERSEY

NEWS

A new social work degree course is being introduced in Jersey under a new partnership with a world-class university in a bid to build a highly skilled workforce of social workers and end the Island’s reliance on temporary and agency staff. From September 2019 there will be a new BA in Social Work Degree run by University College Jersey at Highlands College. This will be a unique partnership with the University of Sussex who will be co-teaching the course with a local team of lecturers for the first three years of the course. The decision to establish this degree course in the Island was made following the recommendations of the Jersey Care Inquiry, one of which outlined the need to build a stable and competent workforce. Education Minister Senator Tracey Vallois said: “This is a significant investment by the Jersey government that will ensure that by 2022 Jersey will have its own highly skilled onisland social work training unit. This investment in training will significantly reduce the costs of hiring temporary and agency staff in the future and will hopefully provide

continuity in care also. “We remain fully committed to not only taking on the recommendations of the IJCI, but ensuring that Jersey’s children and young people receive appropriate help and support throughout their lives. Having a stable and highly skilled workforce of social workers is crucial as we seek to protect the welfare of our most vulnerable children and young people in Jersey. The course is for all social workers including those who choose to work with vulnerable adults.” Principal of Highlands College Steve Lewis said: “Jersey needs a more permanent workforce of social workers, so what better way of going about it than growing our own. I am delighted that we have been able to secure a partnership with a worldclass university that has a longstanding reputation for training social workers in England. The model that has been agreed means that local students will benefit from being taught by experienced social work academics and researchers with onisland tutorial support.” The course will be up and running, subject to Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) approval and course

validation, from September 2019. This means that Jersey will have its first group of locally-trained and qualified social workers in the summer of 2022. The Government is investing £686,000 in recruiting, developing and delivering this bespoke BA Degree Course in Social Work over the next four years. There will be between 12 and 20 places on the course and applications will be welcome from anyone from Jersey or Guernsey who is over 18 and who has the equivalent of 3 A levels at grades B,B,& C or above. The course is open to school leavers and to mature students. Adults on income support will be classed as key workers and may retain their benefits whilst training and adults with a first degree may be able to receive funding. The fee for the course is £9,925 which will be fully paid by Student Finance if the household income (for under 21 year olds) or personal income (for over 21 year olds) is below £110,000. There is also an Access Course route into this course. Highlands has a one year Access to Social Care course which would be suitable so that students without qualifications can also apply for this course.

St Martin ields sold to National Trust The Infrastructure Minister has agreed to sell three States-owned fields overlooking St Catherine’s Bay to the National Trust. Deputy Kevin Lewis has signed a Ministerial Decision agreeing to sell the farmland bordering Pine Walk in St Martin to the Trust. Deputy Lewis said: “We proposed to sell these fields as part of our land management programme. They are not needed for our core activities so we put them out to tender to generate

the best possible income for islanders. I considered all the bids tabled, and the National Trust provided the best value for our community.” In making its offer, the National Trust said it would protect the site and its character, manage the land for the benefit of the Island, maintain access to the area where possible, and carry out all the necessary tree surgery. Deputy Lewis added: “I am very pleased to be able to sell the land to the National Trust, securing both the best financial outcome and the

best community value for islanders. I know some have been concerned about the future of this beautiful spot, and I hope they can now rest assured that it will remain in good hands. “The National Trust is in a unique position to be able to provide long term protection and public access to sensitive areas of our island.” The fields have been leased by the States of Jersey to local farmers, most recently for the six-month period up to 30 June 2018. The rent generated an income of £2,000 per year.

LES AMIS SHORTLISTED FOR GLOBAL PEOPLE MANAGEMENT AWARD Les Amis has been shortlisted for a global award in people management practice as part of The Investors in People Awards 2018, recognising the importance that the Jersey charity places on people making a difference to the lives of its residents. Les Amis is the only Channel Island organisation to have received recognition as part of the Awards this year. Shortlisted for its work in the charitable sector, Les Amis is joined by organisations such as LGBT Foundation and Swiis Foster Care Scotland. The Awards celebrate the best people management practices amongst Investors in People accredited businesses, with the winner to be named at a spectacular awards ceremony in

London on 28 November 2018. Les Amis gained Investors in People status in 2014 and was awarded Silver status in 2017, putting the charity in the top 5% of 8,000 worldwide organisations and heralding them as great employers. Shaun Findlay, Managing Director, Les Amis said: “We are thrilled to be shortlisted for these awards, especially as we stand alongside some really large global organisations. This demonstrates that despite our small size, Channel Island charities are capable of setting a shining example to the rest of the world. “Les Amis is a great place to work and we really do invest heavily in our staff through training and development as well as considering their wellbeing and happiness. To have been continually

recognised by Investors in People over the last few years shows what a journey Les Amis has been on, something which we hope to continue to build upon.” Paul Devoy, Head of Investors in People, said: “The quality of entries for The Investors in People Awards never ceases to amaze me, and 2018 has been no different. We are privileged to work with thousands of incredible organisations and it brings me great pride and pleasure that we are able to highlight and celebrate this excellence through our Awards.” Les Amis now employ more than 200 people within their organisation on the island. From their most recent staff satisfaction survey, 98% of respondents said they were proud to work for the organisation.

Woodturner honoured by London master craftsmen Genuine Jersey member Martin Cotillard has been accepted onto the prestigious Register of Professional Turners, joining a select group of master craftsmen. The Register is composed of turners who offer a service of professional quality to the public, and whose work, prior to admission, has been approved by competent assessors as being of good quality. Turners who are accepted on the Register will be awarded a certificate and may use the letters RPT (Registered Professional Turner) after their name. They can also include the Register’s logo on their stationery and can refer to being on the Register of Professional Turners, which is supported by the Worshipful Company of Turners of London, one of the oldest Livery Companies in the City. Martin said: “It is an incredible

honour to have my work recognised and a great way to carry my business and name further - this is by far the largest accolade I have ever received. I am one of only two wood turners on the Register in Jersey, the other being Mick Renouf, who taught me how to turn. “The process to join the Registry was not easy, and included an assessor flying over to Jersey on Liberation Day to interview me, review my work and report back on my competency as a woodturner. This is not just about being skilled but also about your approach to the wood and your confidence in working with the material.” Martin began woodturning in 1996 when he was working as a firefighter. He went on to turn in New Zealand, France and the UK before returning to Jersey. During his time in the UK Martin also provided woodturning demonstrations for Axminster Tools. Martin, who describes woodturning as

a spiritual skill, turned his hobby to a full-time business in 2011 with the help and support of Genuine Jersey. Being on the Register will provide him with new business opportunities and his details will be included on the Register’s website.

As well as exhibiting at the Harbour Gallery in St Aubin, Martin sells his work at Jane James' outlets and La Mare Vineyard, but is also available for private commissions. John Garton, Chief Executive of Genuine Jersey, said: “The association

DON’T WASTE WATER In the last week of July, the Island’s water in store was 79%. Jersey Water is currently supplying around 23 million litres of water each day, in line with typical summer demand. The Company are not currently facing the same demand challenges presented in some parts of the UK thanks to successful Island wide schemes; such as water meter installations and is managing supplies to ensure the daily demand for water is met. Jersey Water, whose reservoirs hold approximately 120 days of consumption when full, is taking the opportunity to remind Islanders to use water wisely in order to help reduce waste, preserve water resources and help keep bills down. Some of the most effective water saving solutions you can make are small and will hardly be noticed, but together they add up to significant overall savings.

• Take a shower instead of a bath – the average shower uses 40 litres less water than a bath. • If you’d rather take a bath, running it just one inch shallower can save 5 litres of water – twice your daily intake through drinking. • Lawns do not need constant watering – a sprinkler can use as much as 1,000 litres of clean drinking water in a single hour; more than a family of four would use in a whole day. • Turn off the tap – you can save six litres of water a minute by turning off the tap when you brush your teeth. • Check for leaks in your home – if you have a dripping tap or a leaky pipe in your house you could be dripping away money. Visit Jersey Water’s website www. jerseywater.je for lots of water saving tips and free devices.

ART SESSIONS WITH A DIFFERENCE During August local artist Julia Renault is offering summer holiday art sessions with a difference. They focus on the skills of drawing and painting, rather than on themes, and the idea is that people can take a three or four hour session with her to improve their skills. The sessions are tailored to individuals in a group setting, so that they have all the benefits of one to one tutoring with the added benefit of being more affordable and sociable. Art Skill Up sessions are for 7 to 16 year olds and Art Pairs are for two adults or two family members, and can include an adult and a child from age 6. Art Skill Up is studio based but with Art Pairs students go out on location to draw and paint, there are sessions at historic buildings in St Helier, some rural spots and one at the Jersey Lavender Farm. These are both an opportunity for people who cannot commit to Julia’s term time courses, such as visitors, and a taster of the quality of tuition Julia offers. Julia is both an artist fully immersed in painting her own pictures, and a qualified teacher of art. She paints pictures to commission including portraits, but as a teacher does not impose a style on anybody, preferring to teach vital art skills. For the first time this autumn, Julia is offering weekday afternoon

classes for adults, in addition to her popular evening sessions. There are options to learn watercolours, acrylics and oil painting in her studio at Communicare, St Brelade. The start dates are staggered over early autumn but early enrolment is required because, like the children’s classes, numbers will be kept small to ensure attention. Julia’s Art For Young People groups, one of which meets in St Paul’s Centre, St Helier, are very popular as they teach art in a relaxed atmosphere and promote concentration through the precise skills taught. There are spaces for 7 to 16 year olds in these small groups, starting at the beginning of September. The young people have enjoyed success in the Jersey Eistedfodd Creative Arts, regularly winning trophies. Julia seeks out international and local competitions for them, and opportunities to display their art in the island. These children will take part in the St Helier Christmas Window Competition again. Last year they had a window in Romerils’ shop where

their sculptures and mock stained glass made a Christmas scene. Plans for the autumn include painting, drawing, sculpture and textile art. This autumn sees the launch of a class for under sevens at Communicare. An opportunity to take age appropriate art lessons from the start, with art games and art stories. Art Start is something different from messy play. It will be fun, working with four year old artists, exploring materials and their creative possibilities! Carers welcome. This is what people have been asking for, so we are going to offer a shortened nine week term initially. For further information please contact 07797 766302

Kenyan grassroots football boosted by Jersey FA Capita Centre of Excellence and Link Asset Services partnership • Full sets of football kits donated to 16 Nairobi grassroots football teams • The kits will beneit 200 to 300 young footballers Jersey FA Capita Centre of Excellence donated 16 full sets of football kits to Nairobi’s grassroots football teams, with the support of Link Asset Services (previously known as Capita Asset Services). Jersey2Africa4Football (J2A), a Jersey based Not for Profit charitable organisation, presented eight local clubs with 16 full Jersey kits, together with training wear and equipment, as well as kits for coaches. The donation was made possible by Link Assets Services contributing significantly to the overall shipping costs of the equipment which in total weighted over 450kg. The clubs received the kits during last month’s Stanbic Football Festival of Friendship, organised by J2A and co-hosted with a local community organisation Mathare Youth Sports Association (MYSA). The kits, which range in size between ages 12 and 17, will benefit 200 to 300 young footballers. J2A has been working in the slum districts of Nairobi since 2012, predominantly by coaching youngsters in football, providing them with football boots, kits and equipment, as well as training some local volunteers and coaches. This project began last November

when Capita Asset Services was acquired by Link Group and J2A was offered the entire inventory of playing and training kits from the JFA Capita Centre of Excellence. Anthony O’Keeffe, Chief Executive Officer of Link Asset Services commented: “As we’ve seen with the World Cup, football has the potential to transform lives and bring people together. We are extremely proud to have been able to provide support to Jersey2AfricaFootball with this initiative and it’s great to see that the kits have gone to such a worthy cause.” Ricky Weir, founder and chairman of Jersey2Africa4Football commented: “Football is enabling the children to develop life skills, including hard work, perseverance, commitment and discipline, as well as building a sense of community. “The support of Link Asset Services was key to being able to make this donation happen and it was great to partner with the Link team for this initiative. Jersey-based businesses are

hugely important to our project, and we hope to work with Link on future initiatives too.”

Four parks to get 'heat warning' signs More play parks in Jersey are having "heat warning signs" put up, asking parents to check whether equipment is too hot for children to use.

Infrastructure Minister, Deputy Kevin Lewis, said in hot weather the slides and swings can become hot enough to burn children's skin. He said it wasn't to cause panic

but they wanted to make parents think before letting a child on to a hot surface. He said the signs would be in the four parks administered by the Department for Infrastructure.

music, as well as being work that everyone can enjoy. Andy Brunskill said: "When we’re working together I direct and write, and Jimmy designs and directs the puppetry. We make our shows through a long, collaborative approach with designers, composers, academics, actors, puppeteers and a whole range of artists through our unique process. We also like working with new people and frequently train actors and puppeteers through our process." Their current work-in-progress, ‘Jackie the Baboon’, tells the true story of a baboon who is taken to war as a mascot by the 3rd South African Infantry. Jackie is given a uniform

and serves in the trenches of the First World War where he encounters humanity at its best and worst. Taking a unique viewpoint on the war, the play has been commissioned by ArtHouse Jersey in association with Jersey Festival of Words as part of the Island’s commemorations of the First World War. It has been made possible through a grant from the First World War Steering Group arranged through the Bailiff’s Chambers. ArtHouse Jersey will be hosting the company for two residencies: The first in summer for the writer and puppet maker to plan and make, followed by a longer residency where the whole company including actors, the composer, stage managers and designers will come to the Island to realise a full first draft of the play. This residency will culminate in a scratch performance at the Jersey Festival of Words at 6pm on Saturday

29 September at the Jersey Arts Centre. This will allow the Jersey audience to be the first to see this unique play as it is being developed. This scratch performance features innovative puppetry, hope and heartbreak telling the life story of this incredible baboon.

The Acorn Challenge is on The Acorn Reuse Centre has launched its challenge to Islanders to upcycle a soilbox into a unique piece of furniture. The challenge will run until the end of August with entrants posting pictures of their upcycling efforts on Facebook and tagging the Acorn Enterprises page. The pictures will be judged with the expert eye of Channel 4’s Salvage Sister, Charis Williams, who visited Acorn last week to kickstart the challenge with a workshop for Jersey Employment Trust clients. The challenge winner will receive a trophy designed and made by Charis from wood and an old disc brake from her own motorbike. “With the help of Charis and our clients, we have put together a ten-step guide to the basics to turning the soilbox into a coffee table. The rest is up to you and your imagination and we hope the challenge will remind people about the possibilities of recycling and reusing different items. The Reuse Centre is a treasure trove of items which can be given a new lease of life in someone’s home,” said JET Executive Officer Jocelyn Butterworth. The boxes can be collected from the Acorn Reuse Centre at Trinity, which is currently undergoing its own transformation. The Centre’s new expanded facilities will be opened in September. The soil boxes are available from

Asian hornet

nest found in Jersey bird box the centre in Trinity at a cost of £5 and the competition will be open until 31 August. Details of the Acorn Reuse Challenge and the 10-step guide will be on the Acorn Facebook page where the winner will be announced and pictures of the designs will be posted. Acorn Reuse Centre benefits Jersey’s environment by upcycling and reusing tonnes of unwanted items, providing training and employment opportunities for people who might otherwise struggle to find employment, while helping lower income families enjoy an improved quality of life by providing the opportunity to buy reasonably priced reused goods.

It's thought an Asian hornet primary nest has been found in a bird box in Jersey, according to John de Carteret from the Jersey Beekeepers' Association. It's been found at La Saie in St Martin, "neatly packaged in a bird nest box", by an "observant tractor driver". Mr de Carteret said: "Hard to believe that no one has reported this before, as the location is a well-used nature spot, where many hundreds of walkers and cars will have passed directly below the box, which overhangs the public roadway." He said it would have taken about four to six weeks for the colony to reach this stage which could be "an indication of just how quietly and unobtrusively this invasive species makes itself."

Raise your glass this summer with Haut Maison liqueur

Family Law Firm Corbett Le Quesne is delighted to announce it has been shortlisted in the Boutique Law Firm of the Year category of the Citywealth IFC Awards 2019. And if that wasn’t enough, Senior Partner Barbara Corbett has been shortlisted for the Inspirational Woman of the Year Award as well in the Powerwomen Awards, the only woman in the Channel Islands. The double shortlisting comes just weeks after Advocate Le Quesne’s shortlisting in the Citywealth Future Leaders Awards in the Family Law

Partner of the Year Category, the only lawyer in the Channel islands to have made the shortlist in any of the family law categories. The IFC Awards are in their eighth year and have as their purpose to recognise and highlight the excellence of advisers and managers in the private wealth sector in the major international financial centres. The Powerwomen Awards meanwhile are in their seventh year and aim to champion women in the wealth sector, and highlight the female leaders of today and tomorrow. Advocate Barbara Corbett

commented: “We are thrilled to have made the shortlist for the Citywealth IFC Awards. Considering we have not yet been up and running for a year, the shortlisting in itself is recognition that we are already making a mark locally, which is wonderful news.” Advocate Nicholas Le Quesne said of Barbara’s shortlisting: “We are delighted that Barbara has been shortlisted in the Inspirational Woman category of the Powerwomen Awards. Barbara is a stalwart in her field and quite rightly an inspiration, not least to other women. Since starting Corbett le Quesne we have

made a dedicated effort to be an equal rights employer, by offering flexible working arrangements to our staff. We have also focussed on building an internship programme, which we both believe to be one of the most important ways of encouraging and indeed inspiring people into the profession.” The shortlist is now open to a public vote. Winners in the different categories will be announced on 23rd January at the Citywealth IFC Awards 2019 gala dinner, and the Powerwomen Awards on 21st February respectively.

A Channel Island business is taking the first steps to national expansion with its first Jersey listing. The Channel Islands Co-operative Society are now stocking Haut Maison’s top three flavours, the Damson Gin, the Raspberry Liqueur, and the new Coffee Liqueur. It’s an important step for the liqueur producer, who handcraft their artisanal blends, as James Le Gallez, the owner of Haut Maison, recognised a gap in the market for high quality, great value liqueurs. Great takes time, and the focus for Haut Maison is on the quality of the ingredients and recipes. Influenced by island life, some of the liqueurs can take up to six months due to the careful mixing and brewing process. The Haut Maison difference comes in the detail and careful crafting of the recipe. “I’m so excited to see the Haut Maison bottles on The Channel Islands Co-operative Society shelves in Jersey. My personal favourite is the Raspberry Liqueur, but I’m most excited for islanders to try the new Coffee Liqueur due to its Jersey roots and connection. It’s made with carefully sourced coffee beans from Bean Around The World and has a proper espresso flavour. This is the liqueur for the coffee purists,” says James.

Three-time elite BMX world champion and two-time team sprint world champion Shanaze Reade is to be the guest of honour at a community event aimed at encouraging islanders to get on their bikes this summer. Shanaze, who won her world BMX titles in 2007, 2008 and 2010 as well as team sprint titles in 2007 and 2008, is currently an ambassador for British Cycling and will be in Jersey for the HSBC Let’s Ride event on 19th August.

Part of a nationwide initiative, Let’s Ride Jersey is a fun, family-friendly celebration of cycling, designed to inspire more people to get out and about on their bikes. The all-day event, which begins at 9:30am, will feature a number of leisurely ride-outs for all ages and abilities from the Let’s Ride Jersey hub at Les Jardins de la Mer to Bel Royal, whilst for the more competitive riders there will be a sprint challenge and a challenge for cycling clubs.

During the course of the day, Shanaze will be on hand to meet participants and offer cycling advice, whilst she will also join the ride outs and set target times for the sprint challenge. The following day, she will lead a training session with the Jersey Cycling Association Youth Academy (JCAYA). Shanaze has enjoyed a hugely successful cycling career which began at the age of ten. She dominated the international BMX scene during her BMX career and also enjoyed success

in the velodrome, winning five world championships across two different cycling disciplines. Having retired from the competitive side of sport last year, Shanaze now focuses on coaching and as an Ambassador for British Cycling provides input into their strategy to get more women and girls to take up cycling as either a sport or recreationally. Commenting on her visit to Jersey, Shanaze said: “Events like this are a fantastic way to encourage people of all ages and

abilities to enjoy cycling, whether it’s for fun in their spare time, for getting to and from work, or more competitively. Jersey offers such an amazing backdrop for cycling, and I’m really looking forward to coming over to hopefully inspire people to get back on the saddle.” HSBC Let’s Ride Jersey is open to everyone and it’s free to come along and take part. The Channel Islands great summer festival On the 1st and 2nd of September music loving fans will be able to enjoy an incredible varied line-up of global music acts at a family friendly weekend; Weekender. With the first Weekender event last year a resounding success, Jersey's biggest summer festival for all the family returns to The Royal Jersey Showground. Building on the success of the 2017 event, the team behind it have announced "an amazing, wider range of acts, increased family fun area and more of an emphasis on entertainment for music and festival lovers of all ages". The line-up that's been released so far certainly has something for everyone. It's a strong event for girl power and whether it's Sister Sledge providing timeless sing-along classics such as 'Everybody Dance' and 'We are Family' that gets you in the mood,'Your Song' by pop royalty Rita Ora, Scandinavian break-through songstress Sigrid's 'Strangers' or 'Finders Keepers' from Neneh Cherry's YouTube smashing daughter Mabel. There's certainly some strong support for the soulful addition of Rag'n'Bone Man to this year's event. Expect the humans of Jersey to turn out in force for a Saturday night with his deep bass baratone. He's a big man but is he as big as Big Shaq!? Michael Dapaah's fictional rapper struck gold

when he taught everyone quick maths with 'Man's not hot 'and his grime influenced portrayal is going to be Skraaat but Weekender also have the real deal with Grime Godfather Dizzie Rascal - a man who started 'in da corner' and became a national treasure. We're certain that when he goes 'Bonkers' it will have the whole crowd jumping. Away from the main stages, the team are still a bit secretive about a new 'area 23' part of the festival but we hear that the Delta VIP 'Voodoo Lounge' isn't going to disappoint those that got their hands on the (now sold out besides Sunday) tickets. Whether it's 80s legends Ben VP from Curiosity Killed The Cat and Pat Sharp DJing, Lucy Spraggan singing or Mr B rhyming, the area is going to be loosely based on a 'voodoo' theme so expect some theatrics. There will be theatrics of a different

kind in the 'Weekindergarden' - a new, larger family area that will see more circus, more craft and more activity for kids of all ages. Performance is going to extend to a new 'Village Green' performance area and this year's event will cater to a "family fun day vibe" more than ever before with early lunch time food and entertainment on both days. With kids tickets only ÂŁ12.50 for the full weekend, it's an excellent value line up for the smaller members of the family and, well, with a line up like this, you better not miss out either! With the Summer break fast approaching, the second Weekender is on track to end the Summer of 2018 like no other event before it. Make sure you get yourself a ticket!

Clockwise from top right: Parish Map, Sigrid, Sister Sledge, Dizzee Rascal, Rita Ora, Mabel and Big Shaq.

What a scorcher it’s been, and hopefully it will last for the summer holidays. The hot sticky weather has brought to mind childhood days of rock pooling at Green Island, swimming in the sea until I turned blue, staying on the beach until dusk, collecting shells to make pictures with... it was a truly magical time.

Illustrating in the three dimensional

Lynn Muir exhibits and sells her work throughout the UK and overseas and is currently exhibiting at ‘All Washed Up’. I went to meet her to find out where she gets her inspiration from for her quirky driftwood figures ‘As a child I always made things. I trained in illustration but went straight into working in three dimensions as soon as I left college. ‘My very first creations were toys, I began as a toymaker. These were made out of wood as my husband was a carpenter and there were often off cuts lying about (the original definition of the word

‘toy’, coined in Victorian times, was ‘something to delight and amuse’ and wasn’t for children!). My toys became very popular and I was awarded British Toymaker of the Year in 1993. ‘My wooden figures are created from driftwood collected from beaches in North Cornwall. No two pieces of wood are identical, so no two figures are identical. Take for example ‘Bored Walk’, I have created many ‘Bored Walk’ characters but each one is different. It’s impossible for me to ‘copy’ a piece as it depends on the nature of the wood

and the grain, each piece of wood is different and has its own character. Each piece is handmade, handpainted and the wood defines the outcome. ‘I see my work as ‘illustrating in the three dimensional’, with each piece suggesting a story to the viewer. The personality of my figures comes from my love of people watching – the way people stand, watching expressions, I translate them into my work – you could say I’ve made a career out of nosiness! Part and parcel of each piece is naming them, and I enjoy that just as much. Often a name will come to me out of the blue as I’m creating. ‘Where we live in Cornwall is very isolated. I didn’t have any creative influences coming in from elsewhere, so my creations were very much me, that was to their advantage, they had a touch of originality about them because of being isolated. Times have changed and people are getting around a lot more, you get to see a tremendous amount more. ‘Social media is a splendid tool for makers. I have an Instagram page and a business Facebook page. They’ve been very successful, and I really love doing it, it’s part of my work it’s not a chore. In a way it’s a bit of a diary; what’s going on in my life with a lot of factual observations – and some totally fictional! ‘Social media gets so much bad press, but I love the interaction it affords. Someone will react to a post and make a comment, someone will come in with another comment, and so on, then on down the line… very often it will go off at a tangent creating its very own story. That is part and parcel of the story telling. I love

the most mundane comments, one sentence and there’s a story… everything is a story. ‘I do love Instagram. I post photos, not just photos of work, but whatever takes my fancy. I follow lots of people, this way the whole world is opened up. So many have their style – some are photographers, a lot are artists. I read recently ‘it’s easy to make something spectacular from something beautiful, but it’s much more interesting to have beauty in the mundane’. And I think that’s so true, which is why it’s fascinating the different ‘eye’ people see things through. I find it very stimulating. ‘I’ve sold and exhibited in the UK and overseas, mainly in America and Germany. My work has had particular appeal to notable people in the theatrical and film world and I’ve even been the subject of a television programme! My little workshop covered in dust and paint has given me some marvellous opportunities. I have been invited all over the place, met some really interesting people and I never foresaw that side of it when I started.’

HOME LIVING

PROPERTY INSIGHTS The chicken or the egg? By Marcus Matthews of Indigo Estates For homeowners wishing to sell their property and buy another, it’s the classic dilemma; which do you do first - buy or sell? Typically, people initially investigate the market to find out what they can buy for their money. Inevitably, during this research they fall in love with the “ideal” property. As they have yet to sell, as purchasers, they find themselves in a weak position and are unlikely to have anything below an asking price offer accepted. After all, why should a vendor limit the sale of their property to the saleability of someone else’s? Even if terms are agreed, then what? You end up being forced to sell quickly, possibly at a low figure, so that you don’t lose your new property. Annoyingly, once a property goes under offer, everyone seems to want it! The difference between your expensive purchase and cheap sale could cost you as much as 20% more than the cost of a move in more controlled circumstances. So be cool. Sell from a position of strength, and buy using the power of cash. A proceedable purchaser is a joy to the ears of an estate agent and you might even be offered “off market” properties of which other buyers are unaware. As for that dream home – isn’t it rather a coincidence that the perfect property just happens to be on the market at the precise moment you are looking? There is always another one around the corner, and it may even be better! And if you don’t find a suitable property in time, then you

are hardly likely to be homeless, as nobody is going to force you to sell until you are ready – it is entirely your decision. We aim to reduce the pressure

of moving for our clients in many ways, but our answer to the chicken and egg scenario is emphatic …the chicken! Please feel free to contact us on
