Since 2011, the number of makes and models of EVs available in Jersey has steadily increased for both private and business users and Jersey Electricity has been at the forefront of promoting and facilitating their use.

Summer timetable adds extra services for Islanders and visitors. LibertyBus has announced its Summer Timetable with most bus routes seeing an increase in services or other improvements. The timetable has been developed using extensive feedback from the public. In addition to taking on board responses from the public consultation, Liberty Bus has also been listening to the public at Parish meetings. The new timetable features: A ‘park-and-ride’ initiative developed with the Parish of St John that sees some peak hour journeys on Route 25 & 27 extended to serve Les Fontaines car park. A revised table for Route 20 with an earlier first journey, later last journey and amended departure times during the daytime to ensure punctuality and reliability. Route 15 & Route 1 will both now have four buses per hour in each direction with a frequency of 15 minutes (except Sundays which will be two buses per hour.)
Kevin Hart, General Manager, said “The new LibertyBus Summer timetable aims to combine the normal increase in capacity for the summer with the ideas, innovations and feedback of the travelling public. We will continue with our public consultations for our next timetable in September 2013 2013 as they help us shape the network as a whole for the Island.” Other service improvements in the summer timetable include: Route 1A: A morning peak journey diverted to call at Green Road and The Dicq and a Sunday service on the 1A for the Summer. Route 2: 8 departures during the day to St Catherine and a Sunday service in the Summer. Route 4: A Sunday timetable for the first time. Routes 8 & 9: Additional peak hour journeys to and from St Ouen’s Village. Routes 8 & 9: On Mondays to Saturdays, five Route 8 day-time journeys now continue to Plemont. On Sundays, nine day-time Route 9 journeys will continue to Plemont. Route 12A: 8 departures on a Sunday.
Route 14 (St Helier to St Brelade’s Bay): operating up to twice per hour, seven days a week. Route 21: increase in frequency to 8 departures Monday – Saturday. LibertyLink 22: Calling at Jersey Lavender on every journey. LibertyLinks 23, 28 and 29: Additional journeys added 7 days a week. Route 29: Increased frequency to once per hour with most journeys continuing beyond Durrell to Gorey Pier via St Martin’s Public Hall. The route 29 has now been diverted to go via St Mary’s Country Inn.
Planning tells field owner to dig up illegal car park The owner of a field in St John who created a temporary car park without planning permission has had his application refused. The owner will now be told to dig it up. The Planning Applications Panel considered a retrospective application to create a car park in part of a green zone field on La Rue des Servais. Cars already park on the land and the parish constable and deputy support the move to create more parking in the area.

Several neighbours attended the Panel meeting, held at Church House, to object to the unauthorised development. Amongst their concerns were the loss of agricultural land and the impact of extra vehicles in a rural area. The Panel agreed the applicant had not made a compelling case to go against the green zone policy and asked for the hardcore to be removed.

Local charities celebrate the Summer Lottery
This year the Channel Islands Summer Lottery will be a Jersey-only draw with all proceeds going to the Association of Jersey Charities, to be distributed amongst local good causes, enabling the organisations to continue their valuable work within the community. Tickets for the draw are limited to 200,000 and organisers are urging Islanders to get them whilst they’re still available. Following a review of last year’s draw, the scratch card element of the tickets has been reintroduced which means that ticket holders will not only be entered into the draw, but they will also have a one in five chance to win an instant cash prize, including one instant cash prize of £100,000. In
addition to the rising first prize, Islanders can also win a £100,000 second prize and a £50,000 third prize. Tickets will cost £10 and are available from retailers across the Island. The winning numbers will be announced on 30th August 2013. Spokesperson for the Channel Islands Lottery in Jersey, Darren Scott, commented, ‘The Channel Islands Lottery is an opportunity for Islanders to support our local charities whilst being in with a chance of winning. hope that this project will open the door for more cultural collaborations between Jersey and Rennes in the future. We anticipate that this screening will draw a different audience for Jersey Opera House and it’s fantastic that we’re able to provide a cultural experience which caters for our French speaking community.” Rod McLoughlin from the Department for Education, Sport & Culture added: “We’re delighted that, as a result of the close working relationships which have been established between cultural organisations in Jersey and counterparts in Ille et Vilaine, it will be possible for the forthcoming Rennes Opera production of La Traviata to be seen in Jersey at the Opera House. The production will be enjoyed by audiences at open-air venues in Brittany and is offered to the public in Jersey free of charge in the spirit of the Rennes Opera initiative to engage with new audiences. We hope that it will lead to further cultural exchange in the future.” Tickets are FREE and can be collected from Jersey Opera House’s Box Office or bought online (booking fees apply). on grants made possible as a result of the Lottery so we urge Islanders to continue to show their support by buying a Summer Lottery ticket. The more tickets Islanders buy, the more money we can give to charity.’ Jurat Geoffrey Allo, Association Fundraiser for the Caesarea Association which manages the Ridout House Residential Home, said: ‘The Association of Jersey Charities has been so very good to us and the grants we receive from them as a result of the Channel Islands Lottery are vital. Our most recent grant has been used to upgrade all our en suite bathrooms. We have nine rooms in total and the bathrooms have all been totally refurbished including the purchase of electronic assisted seating to aid entry and exit from the bath or shower.’ Laura Westwater, Chairperson at Eating Disorders Support Group commented: ‘Eating Disorders Support Group is eternally grateful for the grants we receive as a result of the Channel Islands Lottery. The group doesn’t charge or ask anyone to pay membership so our income is solely dependent on fundraising by volunteers and grants from the Association of Jersey Charities.’ facebook.com/ ChannelIslandsLotteryJersey

His right leg was painfully bruised by the pavement. The attack clearly did not cause Mr Rattenbury to lose his sense of humour. Jersey Women’s Refuge Launches App
Jersey Women’s Refuge have teamed up with iQ to create an app which gives Islanders the information they need to use mobile technology safely. The app, which helps people to become aware of how to safely use their mobile phone, tablet and computer, was named ‘How2StaySafe’ by two Islanders who entered a competition ran by Jersey Women’s Refuge. The artwork was designed by 15-year-old Beaulieu student Jadine Ingram, who has a visual impairment and completed the artwork whilst on work experience with iQ using iPad technology. Mr Chris Beirne, Headmaster of Beaulieu School said: ‘We are extremely proud of everything Jadine has achieved, despite the challenges she has faced. She has a remarkable artistic talent, as you can see from her latest
project. We wish the Women’s Refuge lots of luck with their latest initiative.’ Sammy Price, Deputy Manager from Refuge said: ‘With modern day technology and functions such as GPS being widely in use for most smart phones, Jersey Women’s Refuge want to advise people about using your mobile technology safely. There is an increase in tracking apps such as ‘Find My Friends’ and Facebook, which enable people to have the ability to monitor where you are at all times. In addition, people can also gain access to your personal messages or emails if you have synchronised your devices. While it is sometimes a useful thing to have, at other times it is not, and we believe that many islanders are not aware of just how visible they are because of their mobile.’ The unique app will provide information for the public to learn how to take control of their mobile phones and use the technology securely. ‘How2StaySafe’ is available through the App store for iPhone, iPod touch and iPad with Portuguese, Polish and English language versions.

Does listening to our favourite tunes help us to exercise better?
Music effects our mood so it can make us motivated to exercise by pumping us up or destressing us from a busy day. It can also make exercise a lot less laborious by putting us in a better frame of mind. Music changes our focus so instead of focusing on sore legs or arms you focus more on the song and may find yourself working harder and for longer. Music also makes it easier to get in a “flow state” which basically means you’re working rhythmically in a kind of hypnotised state and are less conscious of the effort you’re exerting. Music can allow you to exercise more effectively and therefore improve your chances of achieving the goals you set. As a by-product this can improve your sleep, your ability to relax and your general mood. As it is easy to listen to an entire record of music from your favourite artist or band, knowing every beat, word and tempo of the songs you listen to during a workout can reduce your drive to push yourself to run further or lift more weights. To combat the slowdown in your workout that can be caused by

Jersey Welcomes Shaun Rankin’s Ormer Jersey’s much-anticipated new restaurant Ormer, by Michelin starred chef Shaun Rankin, has opened its doors. The project, which has taken six months to bring to fruition, delivers new investment into Jersey’s historic centre. The extensive refurbishment of the site on Don Street has totalled £1.4million of investment. The project has brought together the finest talent from both home and abroad. Local contractors Camerons have been in command on the ground with design expertise delivered from London by renowned restaurant designer Martin Brudnizki. The build has been managed by chef proprietor Shaun Rankin, who has also revealed his exciting new menus delivering dishes for all palates including those using Ormer’s themselves when in season. The ground floor houses a 50 cover restaurant, bar and 20 cover terrace for al fresco dining. The second floor delivers a stunning private dining room and bar suitable for special occasions and corporate
hire. A real secret gem is the overgrown roof garden and cigar terrace. The restaurant will be serving breakfast, lunch and dinner; patrons are also welcome to come in and just enjoy the bars. The downstairs bar will also be the place to graze over the finest Iberico Ham or Royal Bay Oysters. An intensive recruitment drive has delivered 18 staff for the restaurant. Lee Smith will work underneath Shaun in the kitchen as head chef, Amar Boudjaoui is the restaurant manager, Davide Buongiorno is sommelier and Mirka Menderova is in charge of business development. Shaun is currently in the process of interviewing young local applicants for the two apprentice roles he has created. The successful candidates will be awarded three years support and paid training under the wing of the celebrated chef. Shaun Rankin, Chef Proprietor, Ormer, says: ‘Opening Ormer is a true milestone in my career; the whole team has invested blood, sweat and tears to make this happen and we are not going to disappoint. It’s been an intense process as I was determined that standards would never be

compromised. We have now delivered a restaurant that exudes quality in every aspect but also has a relaxed ambience where everyone can feel welcome. We hope customers will make it a regular part of their social scene and we’re enjoying welcoming people for the first time. The menus are diverse with choices for lovers of meat and game, pescatarians and vegetarians. We will be serving innovative Ormer dishes but, as with all my gastronomy, they will only be available when in season.
I am so proud of Ormer; the restaurant is all I dreamed it would be from the mohair banquets, to the handcrafted furnishings, to the state of the art kitchen. I hope locals, tourists and corporates all come and indulge in the essence of Ormer and it becomes a place of very happy memories for years to come.’ Monday - Saturday Closed on Sundays

Types of EVs
EVs offer an environmentally friendly alternative to traditional fossil fuel motoring whatever your needs. Incorporated into a company fleet for business use, EVs will also enhance a company’s green credentials.
Battery Electric Vehicle
Battery electric vehicles are powered purely by electricity. Unlike conventional car batteries, which start the engine and run items such as the radio or heater, the battery pack in an all-electric vehicle runs everything. Crucially, it runs the controller which, in turn, powers the electric motor that replaces a petrol or diesel engine. EV battery packs need to be powerful and long-lasting to provide an adequate range between re-charging. Regenerative braking ‘tops up’ the battery as you drive by capturing kinetic energy when the brakes are applied. This can increase range by up to 20%. An average family saloon, with a range of around 100 miles, would typically have a 24kWh battery pack and be charged via a standard 13Amp domestic socket overnight on off-peak electricity. A full charge can be achieved in as little as 30 minutes through a higher power fast charger.
Hybrid Electric Vehicle
The hybrid electric vehicle is dual fuel. It is powered by a combination of electric motor and standard internal combustion engine, providing increased fuel efficiency particularly in stop-start city driving. The electric motor boosts the car’s ability to start and accelerate, and powers the car at low speeds over short distances when the internal combustion engine is least efficient. The engine kicks in at higher speeds. The system also prevents wasting fuel idling by automatically shutting down the engine when the car stops. The battery is recharged by both the engine and regenerative braking which captures kinetic energy when the brakes are applied.
Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle
The plug-in hybrid electric vehicle, like the hybrid electric vehicle, is dual fuel, powered by both the electric motor and internal combustion engine to increase fuel efficiency. The battery pack can also be charged by the engine and regenerative braking. The difference is the battery pack is larger, increasing the share of electricity used as fuel to power the car and it can also be plugged into the electric grid for charging at home overnight.
Extended-Range Electric Vehicle
An extended-range electric vehicle uses an internal combustion engine to power an electric generator that charges the battery system. Unlike the dual-fuel system hybrid and plug-in hybrids, the electric motor is the only system to directly power the car and turn the wheels. The internal combustion engine only charges the battery system.
Charging your EV
Though most Electric Vehicles can be charged on a standard 13Amp home socket, we recommend having a weather proof external charging point fitted on a dedicated circuit. This is simple to do and chargers come in a variety of styles to suit homes and businesses, small and large. You can have one fitted free of charge as a member of Jersey Electricity’s EV owners’ Evolve Club. Membership can also offer access to public charging points that we are currently installing in five multi-storey Town car parks, beginning with Sand Street, and our own car park at The Powerhouse.
