Residents at Rosewood House, St Saviour’s Hospital, will be able to enjoy three, newly enhanced garden areas, which will improve their wellbeing, thanks to a donation by The Channel Islands Co-operative Society. The Oak Ward Gardens project has received £1,000 from the Society’s Eco-Fund. The Society led the way in recycling in 2008 by levying a 5p charge on one-trip carrier bags. ‘I hope the new gardens will be of great benefit to all the residents, carers and staff at the home. We can all appreciate how having pleasant surroundings can improve our mental wellbeing, and I’m sure this project will do exactly that. I look forward to seeing the finished results,’ said the Society’s Membership and Community Manager, Katey White. Full story on page 5

The proceeds from those sales go into The Co-operative Eco-Fund and are then distributed to environmental projects across the islands. The donation from the Eco-Fund will allow Oak Ward Gardens to buy water features, various wall art and planters containing sensory plants and grasses, all displayed at a height which will enable non ambulant patients and wheelchair users to
enjoy. The sensory equipment will enhance the outside experience for residents and their families. ‘All patients, carers, relatives and staff will have access to these
gardens. The donation has really lifted the spirits of residents and their families and also had a really positive effect on staff morale. It’s extremely important that our
residents feel safe, happy and comfortable in their surroundings. The extra colours, movement and smells of the enhanced gardens will have a calming impact on the wellbeing of our residents. They will also encourage talking points for carers to engage with our residents in a meaningful way,’ said Helen Cowham, senior ward sister at Rosewood House. The gardens will provide a safe environment for the needs of wheelchair users and residents with Alzheimer’s, dementia, mental health issues and end of life care. One garden area will be completed at a time using environmentally friendly practices, which will require low maintenance all year round. Work will consist of adding and replacing existing plants for scent, sight and movement to attract insects. Accessories such as bird tables and baths, and squirrel feeders will be included to encourage other wildlife in to the gardens. The areas will be safe to use, accessible and provide shade during warmer days. A raised herb garden will also be constructed. The gardens will hopefully be finished before the end of the month when there will be an official opening which all the residents, their relatives and staff will be invited to.
Luxury puddings help fund charity cooking programme Children from Janvrin School, who are currently part of the Caring Cooks Let’s Get Cooking Programme, joined forces with local Michelin starred restaurant Ormer, producing some delicious Christmas puddings to raise much needed funds for the charity and its educational initiatives. With the help of Ormer Head Chef, Lee Smith and Melissa Nobrega, Caring Cooks founder and CEO, three budding chefs joined Ormer’s Michelin kitchen each day to learn how to make traditional Christmas puddings. Throughout the week the children made a combined total of 100 puddings all of which will be sold in
Ormer’s next-door Don Street Deli. The initiative provided the children with an opportunity to experience the day in the life of a chef within a professional kitchen as they learned alongside Ormer’s team of chefs to measure and mix the puddings, as well as being educated on the basics of a kitchen service. Lee Smith, Head Chef said “I believe it is vital for children to grasp the basics of healthy eating and cooking, and to understand the importance this has on them from a young age. Learning now, means children can understand and enjoy nutritious and healthy foods whilst creating good practice for their future. It was great to have the children from Janvrin School in the kitchen with us, I think we had just
as much fun as them!” Melissa Nobrega added, “This is just one of the many extended learning opportunities we want to create for primary school children, to experience food and nutrition in settings that they may not otherwise have the opportunity to.” Iain George, Head Teacher at Janvrin School said, “The experience was wonderful for the children, they got a tremendous
amount from this and we would love to repeat something similar sometime in the future.” All ingredients were kindly donated by Cimandis and the puddings will be sold throughout December in the Don Street Deli. The puddings cost £5.50 each and all profits will go to directly to the Caring Cooks Let’s Get Cooking Programme. To purchase or pre-order your Christmas pudding call Ormer on 01534 725100.

Conservationist group to restore habitats for endangered wildlife BIRDS on the Edge will plant and restore a kilometre of hedges with the help of local farmers and landowners, to help endangered birds and other local wildlife, thanks to a donation by The Channel Islands Co-operative Society. The Society led the way in recycling in 2008 by levying a 5p charge on one-trip carrier bags. The proceeds from those sales go into The Co-operative Eco-Fund and are then distributed to environmental projects across the islands. The project has received £2,000 from the Society’s Eco-Fund and will allow Birds on the Edge to buy enough trees to plant and restore the hedges, which will provide a home and food for endangered birds, insects and most of Jersey’s wild creatures. ‘Birds on the Edge is a fantastic project rebuilding natural habitats for our endangered birds and other wildlife. It’s great to see local farmers and landowners working together with Birds on the Edge to carry out this important work. I hope the funds will go a long way in securing a more stable future for the island’s wildlife and I look forward to seeing the results,’ said the Society’s Membership & Community Manager, Katey White. ‘The hedges will be planted in a joint effort with local farmers and landowners, and will comprise of a variety of native trees and shrub species. The purpose is to create linear living structures which will provide many advantages to our local wildlife,’ said Cristina Sellares, project officer for Birds on the Edge. ‘The hedges will be planted at strategic sites in farmland where special crops are grown every year to benefit endangered birds. These so-called 'winter-bird crops’ provide birds with seeds and grains throughout the winters, in
an ongoing scheme supported by previous funding from the EcoFund. The hedges will enhance the value of these crops for the birds, as they will allow them to shelter and rest in between feeds.’ The advantages of planting hedges will provide shelter from predators and bad weather and material to build nests for endangered birds, as well as food in the form of buds and berries. The hedges will also provide food for pollinating insects,
with flowers from various species of plants. Due to the hedges being placed at strategic sites, natural corridors are created which link important habitats that wildlife such as, red squirrels, hedgehogs, voles, field mice, slow worms, green lizards, newts and even bats, toads and grass snakes, can use to move safely across the island. The project will involve planting approximately 1,000 metres of double-sided hedging at farmland
conservation sites across the island. A combination of farm staff, conservation and corporate volunteers will help with the planting of the hedges. The project will also include monitoring the growth and health of the planted hedges, as well as producing progress reports and maintenance recommendations. Research will be carried out and data collected on the bird species and abundance of crops throughout the winter to monitor their progress.
‘This work is incredibly important because most of the British wildlife is either declining or under threat, mainly due to the loss of habitats. Some of Jersey’s birds have already disappeared, such as the Yellowhammer, and others are down to single figures. The most effective way to slow down their declines and help the populations recover is to restore the habitats that they need most, such as hedgerows,’ said Mrs Sellares.

MEET THE TEAM AT THE LASER CENTRE The Laser Centre was established in Jersey in 1997, specialising in laser treatments and non-surgical procedures. Keeping up to date with new products, machines and treatments is very important in our world of ever improving technology. The nurses at The Laser Centre regularly update their knowledge and skills. The Laser Centre has the most up to date Q Plus C Evo Laser from leading manufacturers Lynton Lasers, and this machine alone can remove all colours of tattoo and now has the addition of a Fractional Laser treatment which is perfect for facial rejuvenation targeting the dermal layer of the skin in order to increase collagen production. The Q Plus C Laser can also now treat fungal nail infections, a more common complaint than most of us realise. Other increasingly popular treatments include wrinkle relaxing injections for frown lines, forehead creases and crows feet around the eye area, dermal fillers for skin
smoothing and lip enhancement and definition, and 2018 will see the introduction of “THE 15 MINUTE NOSE JOB” (a non surgical rhinoplasty) which is a very specialised procedure. Laser treatments such as red vein, hair removal and sun/age spot removal and acne scarring are also available, as is sclerotherapy for unsightly leg veins and of course the always popular semi permanent make up. As for skin improvement, The Laser Centre offers choices of medical skin peels for acne, tone, texture and anti-ageing, not forgetting the top of the range A-Lister favourite “Hydrafacial”, leaving the skin feeling softer and looking refreshed and tightened. The clinic carries a wide range of medically manufactured skin care products which cannot be bought on the high street, and The Laser Centre have their own signature range, TLC, containing stronger anti-ageing components that can only be bought in clinic. Community care provider launch new training facilities Cambrette Care, a community home care provider based in Jersey, are delighted to announce that they have opened a new bespoke training suite to support staff in their growing business. The new facilities are fully equipped with a profiling bed, hoists and life-sized model to enable carers to gain hands on, advanced practical experience, to re-inforce the mandatory training that is required for standard carer qualifcations. Paul Gicquel, Director of Cambrette Care commented: “Having these training facilities is going to enable us to offer a practical range of training for our staff. Currently we ensure all of our staff complete the recognised
level of training required for people to become a carer, but outsourced courses are often infrequent and at times which do not fit in with our working practices. This inhouse facility will enable us to run bespoke courses for our staff in a relaxed environment at times which suit them. At Cambrette we want our carers to be the best possible and be fully prepared for any situation to support our clients. We want being a
‘Cambrette Carer’ to be associated with the highest standards, which is why we felt investing in these bespoke training facilities was so important.”

Acorn Reuse Centre gets £25,000 boost from Jersey Electricity
Acorn Enterprises General Manager Steve Pearce (left) helps JEBS Contracts and Operations Manager Ian Whyte as he surveys the site
Jersey Electricity and its Building Services JEBS are delighted to help Acorn Reuse Centre create more jobs and reduce more waste by providing over £25,000 worth of electrical works at the charity’s ambitious new Reuse Centre at Trinity. Acorn has been supporting Islanders with disabilities since 1991. Its social enterprises Acorn Woodshack and Acorn Nursery are already well established at the site and in January this year it launched Acorn Reuse Centre at La Collette. This has proved such a success the charity has now obtained planning permission to turn 1,700sq ft of current nursery space at Trinity into a huge, brand new storage, workshop and retail marketplace for unwanted items upcycled from the La Collette Reuse Centre. Fans of TV’s Bargain Hunt and Money for Nothing watch out! The new centre is due to open next May. In its short life Acorn Reuse Centre has already saved thousands of unwanted items from going into the waste stream while helping many Islanders with disabilities or long-term health problems train for re-employment. The new Trinity Reuse Centre is expected to save 1,500 tonnes of waste in the next five years while giving training and employment opportunities to a further 80 clients. General Manager Steve Pearce said: ‘Acorn Reuse Centre is the most
ambitious social enterprise project ever undertaken in Jersey. All the money our various enterprises raise is reinvested with the aim of supporting more people with disabilities or long-term health conditions back into employment. We are very grateful that Jersey Electricity and JEBs are helping and supporting us by saving Acorn the significant cost of the entire electrical installation for our new centre.’ Morris Architects have drawn up the plans for 1,700sq ft building which sits in the footprint of the current nursery and will be fitted with a moveable partition. ‘This makes the building very versatile as it enables us to extend or reduce the storage, workshop or retail space depending on the flow of goods,’ said Steve. ‘We still want people to drop
items at La Collette. From there, the items will be sorted and moved to Trinity for upcycling and sale.’ Jersey Electricity CEO Chris Ambler said: ‘Acorn Enterprises do a fantastic job and we are pleased to be able to help, not just with funding but with our expertise. The Acorn Reuse Centre has triple benefits for our community in that it’s helping the environment by reducing waste, it provides training opportunities and paid work for those who might find it difficult to obtain employment and it has a beneficial social impact by providing low cost or free goods to people in most need. We wish the new extended centre every success.’ For further information, please contact: Chris Ambler, Jersey Electricity CEO, on 505320, or email cambler@jec.co.uk
Tests confirm July dog death chemical was a banned pesticide L aboratory tests have confirmed that a chemical linked to the death of a dog in the summer was the banned pesticide Phorate. The Department of the Environment became aware of the death of a dog suspected to have consumed a poison in the Beauport/Les Creux area in July. The poisoning was initially detected by a private vet who sent samples to a laboratory in the UK. The samples tested positive for the banned pesticide Phorate. As part of its investigation, the Department of the Environment arranged for the samples to be sent to another laboratory which has now confirmed this finding. Phorate has been banned in Jersey since 2003. The department didn’t find the source of the
Phorate but typically it degrades within a few weeks of being applied or spilt, and officers aren’t aware of other cases of Phorate poisoning there or elsewhere. The Director of the Environment, Willie Peggie said “This was extremely sad for Cyrena-Clarke and her owners, and caused concern among dog owners who like to exercise their animals in the area. We don’t think there’s an ongoing risk, but it’s still worth reminding people that they should hand in any domestic or commercial chemicals that they think may be out of date or banned.” Anyone who wants to hand in chemicals or advice on their safe disposal should contact the Environment Department. Telephone the Environment Department on 01534 441600

Victoria College Pupils recognised by new Deloitte Awards Scheme Deloitte has celebrated the achievements of three Year 11 pupils from Victoria College as part of its commitment to supporting improvement, effort and academic performance in the school. The Key Stage 4 students were presented with their trophies at a special assembly last month. Jasper Clarke, aged 17, won the Award for Performance and Academic Achievement, recognising his exceptional GCSE grades in Year 11. He gained a combination of A* and A grades in addition to the new Level 9 in Mathematics and English. Jasper commented: ‘I was extremely proud while at the same time being quite shocked as I had no idea I was going to win this award.’ Tom Bolton, aged 16 won the Most Improved Student Award. He said: ‘I was surprised and delighted. It is a magnificent trophy, and I would like to thank Deloitte for providing it and putting their names to these awards. I'd like to thank all of the teachers at Victoria College who never stopped encouraging me to reach my true potential.’ Harrison Matthews, aged 16, received the Award for Outstanding Effort throughout years 10 and 11, showing
a high commitment to his studies and portfolio. Harrison commented: ‘I was shocked when I heard my name called out to come and collect the award for the greatest effort throughout Year 10 and Year 11 at the presentation assembly. I knew that I had put in a lot of effort and tried my hardest to get the best grades that I possibly could. However, I would never have thought that I put the most effort in out of my whole year. I was not expecting the prize, but I am very happy that I won it.’ Siobhan Durcan, a Director at Deloitte, said: ‘It is wonderful to see the resilience and commitment of these boys. We are proud to be able to support the awards - the second cohort to be recognised in this way. ‘Effort, improvement and performance must be applauded and encouraged; we wish these outstanding pupils all the best in their future education.' Brendan Carolan, Victoria College’s Academic Coordinator Key Stage 4 and Head of Social Sciences, commented: ‘We value effort and progress above anything else, and we thank Deloitte for their support in recognising this. I emphasised to the boys that two of these prizes could be won by any student regardless of their natural ability or earlier school career as I want everyone to aspire to achieve these awards.’

Local nursing & residential home opens following restructuring work Residents and staff have returned as local company re-opens in Bonne Nuit following restructuring works. LV Care Group is proud to announce the re-opening of residential and nursing home, Cheval Roc. The locally owned and managed home will greatly assist the demand for nursing beds in Jersey. Situated on the picturesque headland of Bonne Nuit Bay, Cheval Roc originally opened in early March 2016. The home was temporarily closed on 18th March following a landslide. The eight residents were rehomed as a precaution and structural reinforcement works undertaken. The entire site has now undergone slope stabilisation involving soil nailing and netting. The solution was designed by Hartigan Structural Engineers and involved over 1,000 soil nails up to 10m long. The nails were installed by Geomarine over a 12-month period. LV Care Group also commissioned significant re-planting to restore the visual identity of the cliff in consultation with National Trust Jersey. Over £1.5million has been spent to ensure the work has been completed to the highest standards. Cheval Roc offers an exceptional environment for residents with rooms enjoying incredible sea views. The new home has a total of 39 superior rooms, all en-suite, with a unique and quality finish. Each room conforms to the latest guidelines from the States of Jersey Health Department using modern building technology to ensure maximum insulation and comfort. Cheval Roc is part of the LV Care Group, a dynamic company focussed on providing the highest standards of care. They have a person-centred

Cheval Roc is welcoming back a number of its original staff including Manager Maggie Stobbart-Rowlands, Head of Maintenance Pat Murphy and Head Chef Bart Wielicki. The home has created 40 jobs for the
local care sector. Two of the original residents are also returning to Cheval Roc along with seven new residents in the first week. The Group expect the rooms to be full within three months. The last resident to leave the home in March 2016 was 91-year-old Betty Machon and she is now going to be one of the first to return. Her son Leslie Halls, says: ‘I am really pleased she’s moving back into Cheval Roc.
I chose the home for her originally after visiting all the others in the Island. It stood out as a state-of-theart building with the most stunning views and most importantly I was confident that they would provide the level of care that she needs. Park extension proposed The Council of Ministers are proposing to extend the Millennium Town Park and develop the Jersey Gas Site. A report lodged in November sets out proposals from Andium Homes to deliver a scheme that would see a fifty per cent extension to the Town Park, provide 110 new homes and have the potential for up to 200 underground parking spaces. The regeneration of St Helier is a strategic objective of the Council of Ministers and the proposition follows Andium Homes' announcement earlier in September that they had acquired the 9,100 square metre site, situated in the north of town, with plans to extend the Town Park. Andium Homes already has plans to develop an additional 600 homes on its other sites in this area, such as Robin Hood, Convent Court lowrise, Ann Court, Ann Street Brewery and the Ann Street Boiler House. Housing Minister Deputy Anne Pryke said “The proposed Gas Works development provides a fantastic opportunity to provide much needed homes for Islanders and to take a joined-up approach to regeneration in this part of town. The current town park is well-used by the public and the proposed
increase in open space would bring significant benefits to the local community.” The proposals, if adopted by the States Assembly, would see Andium Homes enter into discussions with the Minister for Infrastructure and the Connétable of the Parish regarding the provision of additional car parking on the site and an extensive period of consultation with residents in the area. Any proposal to provide car parking would also require planning permission. Deputy Eddie Noel, Minister for Infrastructure, said “The Gas Works site has the potential to deliver approximately 150-200 below surface car parking spaces, whether commuter, shopping, residential or a combination of all three. The entrance to any below surface carpark would be located at the north of the site and be subject to the findings of a traffic study of the surrounding area. "This represents a once in a lifetime opportunity to breathe new life into the north of town. I look forward to working with the Housing Minister to make it happen." The project will be subject to planning permission and, if approved, would be completed by the end of 2023.

NEW CLOTHING SHOP FOR ALL SHAPES AND SIZES The Curvy Gurl is a ladies clothing company based in Newry, Northern Ireland. It sells trendy clothing for all shapes and sizes ranging from 8-32. Founded in 2015 by husband and wife team Keven and Shelly Sands, who moved from America to Ireland to be closer to relatives, the company has expanded from its original website TheCurvyGurl.com to opening four Stores, (three of which are franchises) based in Northern Ireland, The Republic of Ireland, Essex and Jersey, with the Jersey store set to cover all the Channel Islands. The Jersey Franchise has been taken on by Dee Michoux, who although has never worked in retail before, saw a gap in the market for Curvy ladies, no longer being fulfilled over here as she is a self confessed Curvy lady and wanted to help ladies with the same issues. “I talked extensively with both Keven and Shelly, liked them, like the quality of the products as well as the pricing and luckily, they liked me
too..,we have the same vision going forward, thus The Curvy Gurl Jersey was born” After a fashion show event in March, followed by a pop up shop at Barnaby Street in Holmegrown during the month of July, it became apparent that there was in fact a niche in the market so affordable premises became the priority, said Ms Michoux. “The high rents and lack of suitable premises made the task onerous to say the least, there is also no financial help for smaller business start ups, but Jersey Business (Cedric Bird) was extremely helpful and practical in terms of assistance and guidance” The Curvy Gurl Jersey has finally found its home at 50 Central Market in St Helier. For fantastic quality products, great value and good old fashioned customer service, just pop in … love to see you.
Hospital team PayByPhone roll out
responds to audit report The team working to build Jersey’s new hospital has confirmed that it has already addressed the issues highlighted by the Comptroller and Auditor General (C&AG) in a report on decision-making during previous phases of the project. Senator Andrew Green, Minister for Health and Social Services, said: “We welcome the C&AG’s report into the decision-making process on selecting a site for our new hospital in the period up to February 2016. We acknowledge the historic issues that the report raises, and we are pleased to confirm that we have addressed them over the past 21 months, as the C&AG has herself acknowledged. “This is a project of unprecedented size and complexity for Jersey, and we accept that in the early phase we did not have as clear governance and oversight as we do today, and that this contributed to some delays.
“Since February 2016 we have made considerable progress in programme management, decisionmaking and streamlined political oversight, and we have expanded the project team to include a mixture of States of Jersey professionals and expert external advisors with experience of this type of major project. “I am confident that we have the structure and processes in place to deliver our new hospital, on the site that has now been approved by the Assembly, and paid for through a funding formula that will be debated by the Assembly next month. “Jersey’s clinical professionals made very clear to Assembly Members in a briefing last week that there must be no further delays to this project, and all our focus is now on ensuring that we get approval so we can start work in early 2018 to build a modern hospital that will serve our Island for generations to come.”

The Department for Infrastructutre introduced the PayByPhone system in September, first in one car park and then gradually extending the service to cover the other car parks (with the exception of Sand Street). Drivers can still use paycards as an alternative at all sites. Motorists will be able to use PayByPhone to pay for their parking using a credit or debit card from their parking place in the street using their mobile and entering the location code on the nearby signage. Minister for Infrastructure, Deputy Eddie Noel, said “The new PayByPhone system has been really well received in our car parks and people have been asking if and when they will be able to use it on street, so I am pleased that we are able to roll it out to street parking so quickly.” Anyone who has not already registered and wants to use this new system can register now with PayByPhone from their computer, tablet or phone.
The easiest way is by downloading the iOS or Android app or by logging onto paybyphone.co.uk from a mobile device or desktop and selecting the Register option. From there, you can enter your vehicle registration (including the ‘J’), your mobile phone number, email and credit card details. Once registered it is very easy to use the new system by accessing
your account and providing the location number found on the signage in the street or in the car park. If you do not want to receive text reminders or text receipts, which are chargeable at 10p each, you must turn off that option. Otherwise, the charge is the same as paycards. Further information is available on smartparking.

INTERVIEW
There’s a warm welcome for everyone at Jersey Pearl Mike Taylor is a born and bred Jersey man and brand director of award-winning jewellery company, Jersey Pearl. Can you tell us a bit about the company? We’re pearl specialists, and have been going for more than 30 years, so we’re very much part of the Jersey community. The first Jersey Pearl opened in 1985, from the beginning it was more than a showroom, offering unique experiences to visitors and the chance to learn about the wonderful and surprising world of pearls. Jersey Pearl in St Ouen is home to the Pearl Café, a tranquil haven with the most spectacular ocean views. My grandfather, Fred Scragg, who founded the business, was an inventor-slash-engineer, who fell in love with pearls. He opened up the world of pearls and so today we say, “real pearls are our story, designed to celebrate yours."
What might surprise people about Jersey Pearl? We are Europe’s largest pearl retailer and won Retail Jeweller’s Brand of the Year in 2013; people don’t expect
that from a local company. On a human level, the pearls themselves always surprise our customers. From incredible stories about the invention of pearl farming to exciting new culturing techniques and pearl types. Pearls have an exotic and illustrious heritage, and have been worn by some of the most famous people in history. People are always surprised by what they discover when they visit.
What do you think is the most important part of your business? We aim to help people celebrate and treasure life’s special moments, with an incredible choice of beautifully designed jewellery.
What message do you want to send to the people of Jersey? That we invite everyone to pop in and enjoy a warm welcome in our world of wonderful. Take advantage of our free, same day delivery on Jersey, just in time for Christmas.

The first step to a healthier you
John Way wants to help us all to be independently healthy. But there are no quick fixes. By using Naturopathic principles, John works on the whole person by taking an holistic approach to healing and by using natural approaches, like nutrition, herbal medicine and lifestyle changes. Treating the cause, rather than the symptoms.
‘Bespoke herbal formulas are made here, in my clinic, and when required, I ensure every patient is given a formula tailored to their specific needs. I don’t see myself as just a practitioner; someone who hands you a box of pills and sends you on your way. What my patients walk away with is more than that. My most important gift is granting you the knowledge and the elemental tools to

‘Energy has always interested me. From the age of twelve, I’d find myself plucking books on plants, herbal and energy medicine from the library shelves. Educating myself on the concept of energy was not only my first step towards a healthier life, but it shaped the way I treated my body, and this is where my journey into becoming a natural health practitioner began. ‘Initially starting with Reiki, I have grown and expanded my expertise in a range of therapies, including Herbal Medicine, Nutrition, Phytobiophysics and various disciplines of yoga. Focusing on such a diverse range of therapies allows my patients an insight into the practices of my clinic. My work is strongly inspired by Dr. Christopher and his Herbal Legacy teachings, who, since 1953, has helped educate people on how to cleanse and nourish their bodies so that they could heal and prevent disease.

Get well and stay well. Book a consultation by visiting www.johnway.je for further information and to subscribe for regular news and updates. “ I was suffering from a lack of energy and poor health. Initially, I had hesitations over the reliability of results and how effective the treatment would be. My experience couldn’t have been more different! I trust John and the practice completely – I’ve experienced and reaped the benefits first hand! John got my energy levels through the roof and rebalanced me completely which enabled me to turn my health around, get my fitness and myself back. I can’t sing his praises enough. I found it so reassuring physically seeing the form and condition of my blood through his microscope – it was a direct representation of how I was feeling, so clear to understand how something can make you feel so lousy! I have recommended John countless times and will continue to do so. He has a very personal and thorough approach. I actually look forward to my appointments!” Nicole Murray

FOOD & DRINK
Latest trends and seasonal produce Words by Trizia Clarke, Trizia’s Italian Kitchen
Le Feste di Natale Christmas evokes so many memories for me. Most of them are food memories because that’s what everything revolved around. Like many people, I love to recreate some of the dishes from my childhood Christmases and mix them in with a few new ones. Christmas Day was so exciting when I was growing up in Cambridge, with family calling in to wish us a Merry Christmas from about 9am. We would normally still be in our pyjamas and Dad would crack open the ‘Strega Liqueur’ and serve shots to all our visitors. Mum would bring out all the wonderful sweet Neapolitan pastries she’d been making for the last few days, like ‘Struffoli’ and ‘Guandi’ and she’d serve fresh espresso to go with the liqueurs. We’d greet all our guests as if we hadn’t seen them for years when in fact we’d spent the evening before together at one of my aunt’s or uncle’s house! That’s because the real celebration always happened on Christmas Eve (La Vigilia). We weren’t allowed to eat meat on that day and would feast on seafood instead. The star of the show was always ‘Baccalà’ (Salt Cod). It was difficult to buy it in Cambridge, so my parents would make a special trip to London a couple of weeks before to buy it. Then it would be soaked for 3 days in the garage, with
Above: Guandi Right: Struffoli
the water changed regularly until it had rehydrated to 3 times its size and was ready to dust with flour and pan fry. Christmas Eve without Baccalà was unheard of. We’d have it pan fried with a squeeze of lemon or pan fried then slow cooked in a rich tomato sauce with olives. Nonna would also cook ‘spaghetti alle vongole’ (spaghetti with clams), calamari, pan fried fresh anchovies, big bowls of potato salad dressed with garlic, olive oil and oregano and sizzling pans of broccoli with chilli, garlic and lemon. We’d all tuck in, then clear the table for a fiercely competitive game of ‘Tombola’ (Bingo). There would be huge plates of Panettone and Amaretti biscuits put out for us to snack on. Then we would finish the evening by going to Midnight Mass where the children would all sing loudly and the parents hummed along because they didn’t know the English words. I hope that today we are making new memories for our children. I still encourage the children not to eat meat on Christmas Eve for traditions’ sake and we always sit down to a seafood supper together after evening Mass. If it has been a busy few days, I’m not ashamed to say that usually includes a beautiful Fruits de Mer platter that I have collected earlier in the day. This year my Mum is staying with us for Christmas so I’ll be buying my Baccalà in advance! One of our new favourite dishes is this fresh and tangy pudding. It is perfect to follow our seafood feast.
I like to make it the day before, if I can. It is so refreshing and delicious, I hope you’ll give it a try.
Limoncello Tiramisu Serves 6
• 250g pack of Ricotta or marscapone • About ½ cup of icing sugar • Zest of half a lemon • 1/2 cup + 1 tbsp Limoncello liqueur • 1/2 cup water • 1 to 1 ½ packs of Savoiardi biscuits (sponge fingers) • Half a jar of good lemon curd • 250 ml whipping or double cream • 2 tbsp icing sugar • Extra Limoncello You will need either a deep, medium sized baking dish, a large trifle dish or 6 glasses. In a large mixing bowl, combine ricotta/marscarpone, enough icing sugar for your taste, lemon zest and 1 Tbsp Limoncello. Mix to combine. Set aside. In a bowl, pour in the water and ½ cup of Limoncello. Dip the biscuits into the Limoncello mixture and line the bottom of a the dish or glasses with them. Once the bottom is covered with the soaked biscuits, spread the ricotta/mascarpone mixture over top. Place another row of soaked biscuits on top of the ricotta/mascarpone mixture. Spread the lemon curd on top of that. Place a final row of soaked biscuits on top of the lemon curd. Now whip together the cream, 1 tbspn of Limoncello and sugar using an electric or hand whisk until soft peaks form. Spread the whipped cream over top and refrigerate for at least four hours. Preferable overnight. Serve chilled with some raspberries and maybe even a shot of Limoncello on the side.
You can replace the Limoncello with a mixture of apple and lemon juice if you prefer and in that case you may need to add a little icing sugar to the soaking liquid to sweeten it. I will be stocking up on Type 00 flour so that Mamma and I can spend many happy hours in the kitchen making traditional Neapolitan treats. My heart is swelling just thinking about it. I hope you have a wonderful
Christmas, full of old and new traditions. Sydney
Five of the best destinations to celebrate New Year’s Eve Words by Hannah Carolan Are you looking for a special way to welcome 2018? Here are five of the best New Year’s Eve destinations. 1. Edinburgh The Scottish capital city is the place to enjoy the traditional Hogmanay celebrations to welcome in 2018. Thought to derive from the Norse Winter Solstice, Hogmanay is as popular as ever, with the singing of Robbie Burns’ poem `Auld Lang Syne’ to be heard from many a pub or party on the stroke of midnight. Revellers in the city will also be treated to the sound of bagpipes and a display of fireworks from Edinburgh Castle. Try some haggis with ‘neeps and tatties’ washed down with a wee dram of whisky for an authentic taste of Scotland. 2. Hong Kong New Year’s Eve wouldn’t be the same without fireworks and there
is no shortage of competition to see which city can put on the best show. The Chinese have a head start on the rest, having invented pyrotechnics centuries ago and Hong Kong provides a spectacular display across Victoria Harbour with other sites like the Convention Centre and IFC Tower adding to the stunning effect. The eponymous Times Square shopping mall also holds their own New Year’s Eve ball drop event, mimicking the famous and muchwatched event held at Times Square in New York City. 3. London London has firmly established itself as a New Year’s Eve favourite with an amazing display of fireworks launched from barges on the Thames, and with the London Eye
becoming a giant Catherine Wheel for the night. The countdown to midnight is chimed in by the
sound of Big Ben, as crowds keep warm with mulled wine and celebratory hugs along Victoria Embankment. The popping of champagne corks is accompanied by impromptu singing to the music blasting out along the river, with a laser light show providing those watching from home something a little more spectacular than the Jools Holland Hootenanny! 4. Sydney The harbour and particularly the iconic Opera House provide the backdrop to an Australian take on New Year’s Eve celebrations. As midnight strikes, the whole of Sydney Harbour Bridge seems to erupt in a riot of flames and noise from the fireworks placed across its huge framework. Each year
features a new theme for the event, with 2017-18 being ‘Wonder’ and it is sure to live up to the title with a tumultuous light show. More than one million spectators view the celebrations along the Sydney Harbour foreshore, and the event reaches a global audience of more than one billion. 5. Paris For a romantic treat on New Year’s Eve, the French capital will take some beating. If the finances permit, a celebratory dinner cruise down the Seine or a spectacular show at the world-famous Moulin Rouge theatre would be a stylish end to the year. Alternatively, wander with the crowds along the Champs-Élysées to the Arc de Triomphe to join the countdown to 2018 with a stunning light show to get everyone in the party mood. The iconic Eiffel Tower is lit up for the celebrations, becoming a giant tri-colour focal point for the crowds below its awesome, majestic presence.

TRAVEL
Rimini, Aalborg or Bydgoszcz? Ryanair's new routes for 2018 offer some intriguing options for travellers The only direct flight from the UK to the Italian seaside resort of Rimini will take off next summer. Ryanair is launching the new twice-a-week service from Stansted in March. It is among a clutch of new routes for 2018 announced by the low-cost carrier in recent weeks as it seeks to put what has been a challenging 2017 behind it. Rimini is a popular destination for Italians, but is largely overlooked by Britons – not least because there are no direct flights. Those wishing to visit must currently fly to Bologna, 75 miles to the north, and take a train. The beach here is vast, sandy, and - as is often the case in Italy - filled with more sunloungers than seems sensible. Rimini is also one of the country’s preeminent party towns, with scores of lively bars along the coast
and a few swanky clubs on the outskirts. But there are diversion for the culturally minded too, with Roman remains and a Renaissance cathedral to admire, and Florence and Ravenna within easy reach by rail. The nearby hilltop towns of Santarcangelo di Romagna and San Leo, meanwhile, are among the prettiest in Italy. Those arriving by air will also note the name of Rimini’s airport: Federico Fellini International. The great Italian director responsible for La Dolce Vita, Amarcord and La Strada is the town’s most famous son and some of his films were shot here. Ryanair’s other new routes for 2018 include six from Stansted, to Aalborg, Belfast, Dusseldorf (Weeze), Frankfurt, Oradea and Pardubice. Perhaps the most enticing for holidaymakers is Aarlborg, the gateway to Denmark’s far north.
“If you fancy that traditional seaside holiday, with plenty of sun, rain, sand and sea, perhaps taking a cottage by the beach, building sandcastles and flying kites, but without the crowds or amusement arcades, this is the perfect of places,” explains Charlotte Cory, writing for Telegraph Travel. “Think miles and miles of sand dunes – sparse, windswept, sun-scorched, beautiful but, above all, empty. It is like having Norfolk all to oneself.” For the record, Bydgoszcz is in Poland, and rather unassuming, but isn’t far from Toruń, a riverside city that ranks as one of the country’s prettiest. Milan needs little introduction, being home to the Teatro alla Scala, Da Vinci’s The Last Supper, and more boutiques than you can shake a diamond-encrusted tiara at. Prague, with its fairy-tale centre and cheap beers, is equally established among UK travellers.

HOME LIVING
HOUSE PRICES CONTINUE TO ENJOY STEADY GROWTH The latest House Price Index provides good news for the Jersey property market with house prices continuing to rise. The average price of homes sold during the third quarter of the year rose a further 1% from last quarter and was 2% higher when compared with the same quarter in 2016. Market activity for the period was down slightly, having dropped by 1% against the previous quarter. Most property types enjoyed an increase in average price, with three and four bedroom houses seeing the biggest increase. House prices in Jersey are up 2% from quarter two of the year and against the same quarter of 2016, with the average home on the island now worth £464,000. Only one bedroom flats and two bedroom houses were seen to have a marginal decrease in their average
price. But both these property types have seen a rise in average price by £5,000 against the average prices from last year. Lorraine McLean, Mortgage Sales Manager, Skipton International, said: “We have been very busy here at the Skipton Mortgage Centre and anticipate the year to close on a high. “Despite the base rate having increased for the first time in ten years, we do not foresee this having much impact on the property market. The rise was well expected by home owners and certainly hasn’t dampened interest from islanders looking to make their next move.” Following the base rate rise, Skipton International has taken the decision not to increase its Standard Variable Rate (SVR) which will benefit mortgage customers on Standard Variable and Discount Variable Rate products. The cost of a three-bedroom
house is currently at an average of £560,000, £11,000 higher than the second quarter of the year and £26,000 higher than the corresponding quarter of 2016. Four-bedroom homes enjoyed the largest increase in price, with a mean price of £840,000 recorded in the latest quarter, a jump from a figure of £804,000 in quarter two of 2017. Lorraine said: “Whilst there has been a slight drop in transactions this quarter this shouldn’t be viewed in isolation, overall the figures show that the local market has been getting stronger and is currently in a healthy and encouraging place.” Skipton International has offered residential mortgages in Jersey for over 12 years, and has completed over £500 million of loans in the Island. In April Skipton opened a new Mortgage Centre in St Helier to meet growing demand for mortgages in the Island.

Stunning images show the Queen's dazzling Christmas decorations as a 20ft tree arrives Christmas came early for the royal family as staff adorned a huge 20ft Christmas tree with dazzling gold baubles at Windsor Castle. Halls at the Queen's residence in Berkshire have been decked a month ahead of the festive period. Stunning images showed the enormous 20ft Nordmann Fir erected in St George’s Hall at the estate. The tree was sourced from nearby Great Windsor Park.
Decorations appear to follow a royal gold-and-red theme this year, with some baubles shaped like crowns. The incredible tree is covered in sparkling gold tinsel, twinkling white fairy lights and huge velvet bows. Spectacular images showed the castle’s State Dining Table set with silver guilt pieces from the Monarch’s Grand Service. The table has been decorated with festive gold creations. A second 15ft tree, clad in red decorations, was put up in the Crimson Drawing Room.
