VARIETY CELEBRATES 50TH ANNIVERSARY Variety, the Children’s Charity of Jersey, marks 50 years of helping disadvantaged and special needs children in Jersey, with a charity skydive and, as the Battle of Flowers chosen charity, their first ever float. They want you to get involved and help them fundraise. For the last 50 years, on almost a daily basis, Variety has received requests from schools, health visitors, social workers, occupational therapists and other organisations who have direct dealings with families for help supporting children who are disadvantaged or have special needs. Variety’s mission has been assisting these children to ensure that as far as possible they have equal opportunities. Many of the requests are for help with basic needs such as food, uniforms, shoes, and baby equipment. As well as requests to provide specialist equipment for disabled children such as wheelchairs, walkers, electronic beds and supportive buggies. In 2017, the total requests Variety received were from 357 families with 732 children amounting to £50,333.70. This represents an increase of 43% in the number of children needing their help from the previous year. Variety are delighted to have been chosen as the 2018 Battle of Flowers

official charity. As well as fundraising on the day, they are looking for people to help build and decorate their first ever float. Variety will have eight brave skydivers taking to the skies on Friday the 31st August. They are looking for some more volunteers willing to take the plunge for a good cause. Sandra Auckland, Chief Barker, says: ‘We are very grateful to all of those who have supported Variety over the years. We have been able to help so many individuals during this time and everything we have achieved has been possible thanks to the generosity of Islanders. Unfortunately, our work is not complete, as we heard from a speech given by the States of Jersey CEO, Charlie Parker, there are still around 300 children in the Island who come from families who are not able to give them breakfast in the morning or buy their school uniforms. Variety plays a vital role in supporting these children and we are asking you to get involved and give us a special push this year. Whether that be helping us build our float for the Battle of Flowers, jumping out of a plane for Variety or fundraising in any way you can. We rely entirely on the generosity of Islanders and our patrons to continue

Morning of

sports for disabled children Children with disabilities have the chance to try out new activities. Jersey Sport is holding a free morning of sport for people to get to grips with new activities like athletics, frame football and martial arts. The ‘Sportability Family Morning’ will take place at FB Fields at 9:30am on Saturday 21st July. Dan Garton from Jersey Sport hopes it’ll encourage more disabled people to get involved: “Disability shouldn’t be a barrier to taking part in sport. The morning will be a fantastic chance for children to have fun with other participants, to maybe try a sport they haven’t had the chance to play before, and to potentially make new friends. “The morning also doubles up as a bit of a fact-finding mission for us, to see which sports are popular with the children so we can look to offer more, regular opportunities in the future.” If you’d like to take part, email bookings@ jerseysport.je or sign-up on the day.

Student builds upcycled bed thanks to Acorn

A 12-year-old student – inspired by a photo she saw on social media network Pinterest – is now sleeping on her dream bed, upcycled from pallet boards by Acorn Enterprises. Clara O’Sullivan, who is in Year 8 at Beaulieu Convent School, approached the Trinity-based social enterprise to help her create the DIY pallet-board bed. Delighted at Clara’s passion to reuse and upcycle, Acorn helped her source the right pallets and prepare them before construction. Acorn Enterprises Manager John Hill said: “Clara’s enthusiasm really inspired me, and it was heartening to know that young people in Jersey are interested in reusing and upcycling. Projects like these are great for the environment as it means we are putting less items into the waste stream. Clara’s project perfectly

combines reuse and upcycling, which really is at the heart of what we do at Acorn Enterprises.” To make the bed, Acorn Enterprises removed the nails and sanded the boards down. At her home, Clara assembled the bed herself and decorated it with fairy lights. Clara said: “I am so grateful to John and the team at Acorn for making my dream bed come true. When I explained to John what I wanted to achieve, he really listened and found the pallet boards which his team transformed. I would recommend anyone who sees a reuse project on social media to visit Acorn Enterprises. They have so many

interesting items coming into their Woodshack workshop, ready to be reused and upcycled. It’s brilliant to have this facility in Jersey and more people should make use of it as it helps support the environment and our community.” Acorn Enterprises is the vocational

training arm of the Jersey Employment Trust and includes the Acorn Woodshack. Here, timber that would otherwise be burned is saved and used to make high quality products, such as furniture and picture frames, which are then sold from the store in Trinity.

15% increase in JHA Membership as industry recovery strengthens Following encouraging statistics from Visit Jersey and Ports of Jersey, the Jersey Hospitality Association has announced a significant increase in its own membership this year. The association, which celebrated its 60th anniversary last year, says that is not only down to its own efforts to encourage businesses to join but also increased optimism combined with an acknowledgment that the industry is stronger if it speaks with a single voice. Tourism and hospitality is growing after a well-publicised period of decline. According to figures published recently by Visit Jersey, 727,000 visited the Island in 2017, who collectively spent £250m. Ports of Jersey reported that 2.3 million passengers travelled through the Airport and Harbour last year, with the Airport having its busiest

year since 2000, with 1.6 million people – the majority visiting the Island – passing through it. The JHA – which represents all businesses involved in hospitality, from hotels and bars to food wholesalers and hire car companies – now has a membership of more than 150. JHA President Fiona Kerley said: “Bringing the Ports of Jersey, Visit Jersey and JHA figures together, there is a definite upward trend and that is hugely encouraging. From our perspective, it is giving us new energy to provide training, set standards of terms and conditions and ensure that hospitality is a rewarding career for Islanders. “Of course, we are also fully aware of the threats to our recovery, including ill-considered laws and regulation, and potentially damaging labour restrictions while we still face

uncertainty over Brexit. Underlining this all, of course, is the fact that we all enjoy the benefits of our industry, from taking our children to an attraction to enjoying a drink and meal in a bar or restaurant.”

JT Fan Zone to create festival vibe at Super League Triathlon JT – the official Technology Partner of September’s Super League Triathlon in Jersey – is expanding its support this year to bring a wide selection of entertainment, food and games to the world-class event, for Islanders and visitors alike. Building on the huge success of last year – when JT provided technical support, mobile communications and full-fibre internet access to the broadcast team and race organisers – JT is helping make the weekend of 28-30 September even more of a community event. The FREE JT Fan Zone will be based on the lawn above the Waterfront car park and will include three days of free music, catering from Jersey suppliers, a Tech Zone with games to play, and an activity-filled Kids’ Zone, all free for Islanders to enjoy. The weekend of intense competition will be televised and streamed around the globe. Last year, it attracted a worldwide audience of 375 million people in 147 markets. The live streaming and social media coverage was possible thanks to the strength of JT’s full-fibre and mobile network helping power the event.

NEWS

By this September, Jersey will be the first jurisdiction in the world to have every residential broadband property directly connected to fibre and this event is the ideal opportunity to celebrate that achievement. Tamara O’Brien, Head of Customer Experience at JT, said: “A Super League needs a super-fast network to support it and I’m delighted that JT is, once again, the official Technology Partner, providing support for this exciting event. As the event grows so does our involvement, and we’re proud to be giving something back to Islanders through the new JT Fan Zone. The event is also a great occasion to showcase our 100 per cent full-fibre network to the world. Like the Super League Triathlon, it really puts Jersey on the map and as the Channel Islands’ only locally owner provider, we’re very proud to be even more involved in this event.” Super League Triathlon Chief Executive Officer Michael D’Hulst said: “Last year was a great success so we’re delighted to be returning to Jersey. We want as many Islanders as possible to come down to see the action, so I’m thrilled that JT is making the weekend even more of an event for everyone.”

New prison governor

new prison governor for the States of Jersey Prison Service has been A appointed to take over from the current governor Bill Millar when he retires at the end of August.

WAVES CANCELS SUMMER FLIGHTS Channel Island airline Waves has cancelled all its flights and bookings this summer. It says it’s taking a break to ‘take stock of its position in the current marketplace’. It follows a legal dispute over its taxi-style operation earlier this year. Waves was stopped from selling single seats in January while its licence was challenged by competitor Blue Islands. It resumed its original operations at the end of March when it was issued necessary paperwork by Guernsey’s Transport Licensing Authority. The airline says the process ‘damaged momentum’ and had a detrimental effect on the business. Passengers affected by the summer cancellations will be offered a refund,

or the chance to rebook later this year. Waves founder Nick Magliocchetti, says the pause is a chance to get the focus of the business right: “The new CEO Gus Paterson comes in on 1st September, so we are cancelling the flights for June, July and August. The objective is to come back on 1st September. We are taking this as an opportunity to re-group, to re-structure the business and come out stronger and better on 1st September.” The airline has described it as ‘tumultuous 12 months’, adding it has ‘overcome every obstacle placed in our way‘. “Clearly we are the underdog and are fighting for the right of choice and convenience for the people of the Channel Islands.”

Nick Cameron has been announced as the next Head of Jersey Prison Service and Prison Governor of La Moye, taking up his post on 13 August 2018. Mr Cameron has 24 years’ experience governing prisons and leading other offender management services in Scotland, England, New Zealand and Australia. He was Governor of two prisons in Scotland and in Western Australia governed Australia’s largest prison with 1,470 offenders. Nick has also led Probation and Criminal Justice Healthcare services. His most recent role was deputy director of Justice and Immigration at Serco Group. Before joining the Scottish Prison Service in 1994 as an Assistant Governor, he was a Captain in 29 Commando Regiment and served in the 1st Gulf War. Nick has a 1st Class Honours degree from Kings College, London and a Master’s degree from Edinburgh University. Nick is married with two grown up daughters. He and his wife have previously walked the Jersey coastal path and enjoyed cycle holidays in Jersey. Mr Cameron said: “I am delighted to be appointed to lead the States of Jersey Prison Service and Governor of La Moye. I look forward to working with colleagues across criminal justice and other government

services, building on the great achievements Bill has led. The One Jersey strategy, also creates the opportunity to work closely across services to deliver better outcomes for offenders and enhance community safety. "My wife and I are also looking forward to living in Jersey, and being part of the Island community.” Mr Millar will retire as governor of La Moye prison, on 31 August, after more than 40 years in the prison service, working for ten years in Jersey and 30 years in the Scottish Prison Service. During Mr Millar’s time in post the Jersey Prison Service won the Jersey CIPD Award for the Most Successful Change Management Programme in 2012. And Mr Millar received a Certificate of Commendation from the Minister for Home Affairs in 2013 for outstanding leadership and service to the Island of Jersey and was awarded an MBE in 2017. Mr Millar said: "What I’ve enjoyed most about the role is having the autonomy to bring about significant change in the prison management structure and the prison regime. I have been very fortunate to have

benefitted from great support from my senior management team and the Jersey Prison Service Association but also from successive Ministers and Chief Officers. I would not have received such accolades without the support and commitment of the managers and staff at La Moye prison. “As retirement approaches, I am looking forward to spending more quality time with my wife and family and having much more control over my time."

in a successful school in Hertfordshire. Mrs Linton said: "I am delighted and honoured to be appointed the new headteacher for First Tower School, and I am very keen to get to know all the pupils, staff and parents. Being the headteacher of a school is a great privilege and I am looking forward to the challenges and rewards that go with it." Phil Walker has been appointed as headteacher of Plat Douet School. Mr Walker has been a senior leader and deputy head at the school for the last six years, and this appointment will offer invaluable continuity to the

school. He replaces Suzanne Conoops who served as headteacher for 19 years, only the fourth headteacher in the school’s 50-year history. Mr Walker said: “I am absolutely delighted and honoured to have been appointed as the fifth headteacher of such a wonderful school. I follow a very successful and inspirational headteacher, and I am determined to carry on and further develop the excellence in education at Plat Douet. I would like to thank Suzanne for her encouragement, constant high expectations for all and for being instrumental in developing my skills

to enable me to take up the role and continue the development of Plat Douet School. It is a privilege to do so and I look forward to an exciting future.” Education Minister, Senator Tracey Vallois, commented: “I would like to congratulate the new headteachers and wish them well in their positions. They are joining three great schools and I look forward to working with them as they settle into their new roles. FANCY A TRIP TO THE SEASIDE? HEAD OVER TO JERSEY’S MARITIME MUSEUM A new exhibition that will evoke memories of days by the sea to open at Jersey Heritage. ‘Seaside’, in the Don Filleul Gallery at Maritime Museum, showcases films and photographs from archives. At that time of year when the Island comes alive with seaside fun, Jersey Heritage is drawing a straight line between art and enjoyment by bringing tourists, members, families and art lovers’ memorabilia together in one exhibition to conjure up those lazy days by the sea. Steven Gumbley, Artist and Designer for the exhibit, commented, “The exhibition will be everything you need for a day of fun at the seaside and I am very excited for the launch this week.” ‘Seaside’ will be displayed in the Don Filleul Gallery at the Maritime Museum. One of the rooms has a marvellous fairground style cinema façade designed by filmmaker Jack Lockhart. It will honour a significant, but almost forgotten pioneer of Cinema - William Kennedy Dickson, who lived in Jersey in the 1920s. Dickson invented the Kinetoscope, which later became known as the What the butler saw Machine, and also world’s first movie studio, working along with the great inventor Thomas Edison. Louise Downie, Curator of Art at Jersey Heritage added, “This highly visual exhibition is a lighthearted experience appealing to all ages. With something for everyone, the exhibition will feature some wonderful photographs, films and some interactive surprises. It is a fun way for visitors to round-off their Maritime experience.” ‘Seaside’ will be open to public from 2nd July 2018.

Established in Jersey since 1997

Colorado beetle warning issued Current local weather conditions, high thermal instability and high levels of beetle flight over the Cotentin Peninsula in France have prompted the Department of the Environment to issue a formal 'Colorado beetle warning'. Colorado beetles are destructive pests of potato crops, and are also known to cause considerable damage to tomato crops. Farmers are being asked to ensure that all field workers are aware of what the adult beetles look like. States agricultural inspectors will be making coastal checks over the coming days but all Islanders are being asked to be vigilant and to report any sightings of the beetles. Sightings can be reported to States agricultural inspectors or directly to the department environment@gov.je.

Genuine Jersey attracts new talent to the association

The Little Shop

The Island’s largest community of artisans, producers and craftsmen is proud to announce the further expansion of their membership, with several new local businesses having joined their fold. Kirsty Garcia, Laura Smillie and Wonderlands are just a few of the new members which will now bear the Genuine Jersey hallmark, a sign of local provenance and high quality. Artist Kirsty Garcia is well known for her vibrant and colourful artwork and will be participating in this year’s Skipton Open Studios as a featured artist. With a keen interest in exploring new styles and techniques, her art and design work is very diverse, ranging from abstract paintings to jewellery. Kirsty said: “My goal is to one day open my own art studio to showcase my work and to support the local art community.” Kirsty takes part in many of the Island’s celebrated markets and craft events and believes that Genuine Jersey will be the support she needs to take her business to the next level. Laura Smillie also believes being part of a large community of artisans will bring a new dynamic to her business. Laura set up her business of producing hand crafted porcelain candle holder earlier this year. She

admitted: “Being self-employed and working from home can get very lonely at times. As a new business owner, I’ve lots to learn about running a successful small business so it’s great to connect with other Genuine Jersey members to share our knowledge and experiences.”

Wonderlands is the name of Anna Renouf’s business, which includes a range of bohemian handmade macramé plant hangers. Her macramé pieces which will now bear the mark of Genuine Jersey, sprung from a love of plants and an interest in developing her skills in the bohemian 70’s craft. As demand for her products grew, Anna decided to start her own small business which specialises in design, styling and setting a stunning scene at events. As part of the association, members are offered guidance and training on how to develop their business, the ability to attend local Genuine Jersey markets, access to discounted rates such as advertisement and insurance, along with branding and PR support. The Association now stands at approximately 170 members, included a range of farmers, producers, craftsmen and artisans. The official figure released by the States last month was 43% – but that was based on people who registered in time. High On Customer Service, Low On Price ATF Fuels is an independent, locally owned and managed fuel distributor in Jersey. They emerged onto the aviation and home heating fuel market two and a half years ago. Since then, they have been working hard to bring prices down in areas like home heating oil, marine fuel and petrol. In March this year, they opened a petrol forecourt at Augrès, on Route de la Trinité. The forecourt has a petrol loyalty scheme for home heating oil customers and non-home fuel users to bring down the cost of your petrol even further. Just ask for your "personal stamp loyalty card" from the pump attendees. The company also supplies the Marine 24/7 Fuel berth between South Pier and New North Quay. With their competitive pricing structure they have been able to lower the price of fuel for Jersey’s boat owners. Additionally, they provide a complete refueling solution for the local farming community. If your farm has a requirement for gas oil, road diesel or kerosene, they have the fuels to keep your farm running. Jonathan Best, chief operating

officer of ATF Fuels, said that the company was ‘committed’ to ensuring customers received a fair price. Mr Best said that by bringing fuel over to Jersey in containers by ferry, ATF was able to bypass charges levied on other retailers which import fuel via La Collette Terminal and so did not have to pass them on to the consumer. Mr Best ensures that ATF “are committed to ensuring our customers receive their fuel at a fair price, delivered when they need it, whether that be by ordering online or picking up the phone”. For ATF’s home heating oil customers, the process of ordering is made easy with their free Apollo Remote Monitoring System. The monitoring system prevents you running out of home heating oil by monitoring your tank and automatically notifying ATF when the oil falls below a certain level. ATF's dedicated and experienced team believes in delivering top quality fuel, at the lowest price, at a time that is convenient for you. Call and Switch Today! 01534 880738

award for

ground breaking full-fibre network

JT has been recognised at the Connected Britain Awards, announced at the end of the UK’s premier conference on communications technology. The Channel Islands’ largest and only locally owned telecoms operator won the Fibre Connectivity Award for its pioneering Gigabit full-fibre network. In winning the award, JT was recognised above some significant other shortlisted organisations involved in fibre technology, including Digital Scotland, Gigaclear and Grosvenor Group. The organisers, Total Telecom, described this win as: Fibre Connectivity Award: This was another tightly contested category, and one that carried a good deal of prestige, given the UK's renewed focus on fibre networks. JT Group claimed victory in this category with their ambitious project on the island of Jersey. This award is timely as this year Jersey will become the world’s first full-fibre jurisdiction, with every residential and business broadband customer directly connected to a network that offers unrivalled internet upload and download speeds.

Graeme Millar (JT CEO), Daragh McDermott (JT Corporate Affairs Director), Richard Beaugie (JT Head of Gigabit) and Lorne Mitchel (Awards Judge. Founder & Managing Director, Objective Designers).

This achievement was rewarded by the judges, who praised JT’s foresight and commended the way the project was managed and delivered. JT Chief Executive Officer Graeme Millar, who accepted the award in London, said: “We’re clearly delighted that our Gigabit project has been singled out at such a prestigious event. Choosing to replace our copper network with a full-fibre one back in 2012 was a bold decision to make; however, we’ve always known that it was the right one and it’s obviously pleasing to now receive national recognition for our efforts. JT started the journey of rolling out our network years in advance of the point at which it would be required and we’re now at a place where many other

jurisdictions want to be. “We’ve laid over 3,000 km of individual fibre-optic cable to almost 40,000 homes and 5,000 businesses. With 100 per cent of broadband customers soon to be connected to full-fibre, Jersey will have the highest fibre-to-the-home penetration in the world. That is something the whole Island can be proud of. “Our success at the Connected Britain Awards is down to the cumulative effort of a huge team of people and I would like to publicly thank my colleagues and all our stakeholders for their enduring hard work and support, as well as the support of our customers, whose needs were central to the vision of this project.”

New pedestrian crossing outside La Moye School

James Singleton wins the Ken Tait Memorial Bowl at the OV Golf Tournament

There will be a new pedestrian crossing outside La Moye School, but perhaps not before September 2019. A 157-signature petition was handed to the States by local mum and recent election candidate Garel Tucker. St Brelade Deputy Montfort Tadier had pushed for the zebra crossing to be created in time for the start of the next academic year. Infrastructure Minister Deputy Kevin Lewis says it will be done, but it can’t be put above other work already planned: “If I can get more funding we can bring it forward. If there is a gap we can do it earlier than planned. There is a lot of work to do. Thirty one Old Victorians took part recently in their annual golf tournament, held in bright sunshine at the Royal Jersey Golf Club. This year’s individual winner was James Singleton with 36 points; and the joint individual runners-up on 34 points were John Cronin, Matthew Sutton and Bob Devitt. The winning team on 78 points was John Cronin, Bob Devitt and his son Paul; and the runner-up a point behind was the team of Vaughan Rimeur, Mike Veillard and Matthew Sutton. The tournament organiser, Mike Tait said “This golfing event is now in its 15th year and it is a wonderful opportunity for Old Victorians, young and old, to get together in a friendly but competitive environment. I’m grateful for the continued support of Rathbones and Quantum Building Supplies, who provided the prizes.”

Minimum wage review The Employment Forum wants to hear your views about increasing the minimum wage from Monday 1 April 2019. The minimum wage in Jersey is currently £7.50 per hour and it applies to all employees over age 16. Public views wanted Each year the Forum asks the public to comment on what rates the minimum wage, the trainee rates and the maximum offsets for accommodation and food should be set at from 1 April the following year. All of the responses that the Forum receives are combined with statistical information and data about the economy, as well as other relevant information and evidence. This helps the Forum to make its recommendation on the minimum wage.

Chair of the Employment Forum's view Helen Ruelle, Chair of the Employment Forum, said: “Each year we encourage stakeholders to tell us their views, either in writing

or in person. Employers who pay the minimum wage and employees who earn the minimum wage can provide us with valuable insight. From previous experience, we know that the minimum wage is most relevant for employers and employees in the hospitality and agriculture sectors. In order to ensure that our recommendation is appropriate, it is really important that people who are

directly affected by minimum wage increases get in touch and tell us how this impacts on them. We provide an online survey and stakeholders are also welcome to give us their views in person at a private meeting with the Forum.”

The Forum's recommendation The Forum will collect responses from stakeholders. The Forum will then consider all of the evidence received, including the economic advice and the latest increases in average earnings and prices, and will present a minimum wage recommendation to the Social Security Minister in September 2018.

How to give your view You can complete the survey online on the gov.je website. Copies can also be obtained by emailing the employment forum or phoning +44 (0) 1534 447203. Respondents may also request a meeting with the Forum. Responses to the consultation must be received by Wednesday 27 July 2018.

Alliance wins national award from Tesco Alliance’s Broad Street store has been recognised nationally at an awards ceremony for Tesco partners. The store, which opened earlier this year, won Best Delivery of Brand at Shelf Edge category at the Tesco International Partnerships Awards, which were held as part of a conference last week. Alliance is a locally-owned retailer which sells Tesco products exclusively in the Channel Islands. Gareth Bowen, Trading Manager of Alliance said: “Tesco has more than 25 International partners worldwide, so we’re delighted that our Broad Street store has been recognised for its superior look and feel, range and fantastic shopping experience. “It is testament to the fantastic staff here, led by Sou Teixeira, who consistently go the extra mile to make sure that the shelves are well stocked, clearly signed and look attractive. The great customer experience they provide, combined with low prices on high quality produce, ensures that Alliance is the first-choice supermarket for an increasing number of Islanders.”

5½ YEAR SENTENCE FOR COCAINE SMUGGLER A man has been jailed for trying to smuggle around £5,000 worth of cocaine into Jersey. Darren Dorrington, who is 49 and from Bristol, has been sentenced to five and a half years behind bars. Dorrington was caught by Customs Officers after arriving on a flight from his hometown in February. Nearly 60 grams of cocaine – with a street value of up to £5,700 – were

found on him. The court heard that he had run up significant gambling debts with a person he wouldn’t name, who asked him to deliver the drugs to the island. Dorrington pleaded guilty to the charge when he appeared in the Magistrate’s Court earlier this year. In sentencing, the Deputy Bailiff says he did not appear to have any regard to the effect the cocaine would have on the people of Jersey.

FIRST CHANNEL ISLAND CHILDREN’S BOOK AWARD The Channel Island Children’s Book Award (CICBA) is being launched this year with children aged nine to 12 years old being asked to nominate their favourite book of the last 12 months. The award, which is being jointly organised by Jersey Library and Guernsey Schools’ Library Service, is open to children in both Bailiwicks who are invited to nominate any book which they think best fits the award criteria. The award criteria are: • Fiction published in English for the first time and between July 2017 and June 2018 • A stand-alone novel – The first book in a new series will be accepted but no sequels • The author must be from the UK, Ireland or the Channel Islands

Nominations open on Monday 2 July and will close on 28 October 2018 and can be made online on the award website. Once the nomination period ends, all eligible books will be whittled down by a panel of judges into a final shortlist. Keep summer pests under Absolute control

We all look forward to summer, however there is one pest that loves to ruin our sunny afternoons, wasps. The queen wasp actually builds her nest in the spring and over the next few months lays eggs to enlarge her colony.

Alan Le Pavoux, the Bosdet Foundation’s charity manager Alan Le Pavoux, charity manager, told me; ‘The Bosdet Foundation was set up by the late George Bisson in 1989. The principle aim of the Bosdet Foundation was that income made on the land known as Les Ormes, is to be invested back into the community, to help the people of Jersey.

Wasps can be aggressive creatures when disturbed so it is advisable not to remove a wasp nest without professional help. Howard Durell and his team at Absolute Pest Control can remove wasps from attics, fascia boards, soffits and dormers using specialist equipment. Mind you, another summer pest has to be ant colonies. Whether they are infesting your home or your business, Absolute Pest uses effective professional treatments for eradication. Whatever the pest, Absolute Pest control has the solution, just ask for details on how they can help.

‘Essentially the profits from all the business concerns and facilities at Les Ormes, have seen the help that the Bosdet Foundation gives to the community steadily grow. Since 1989, the Foundation has quietly donated to the community, and in 2008, when the self-catering accommodation was introduced at Les Ormes, the annual amount donated significantly improved.’ Alan was also instrumental in setting up volunteer.je which is funded and operated by the Bosdet Foundation for the benefit of Non-Profit Organisations. The main aim of Volunteer.je is to help find volunteers to undertake the great work that Island charities do.

Love Bird Gifts & Pottery Studio

Cool and colourful

Pia Rossini floaty tunics and kaftans are too good for the beach! A holiday staple, these are perfect for a touch of glamour when keeping cool.

My ‘go-to’ place for unusual and personal gifts is Love Bird – the first thing I bought for my new granddaughter was a Little Jersey Bean bib and babygro! Love Bird Gifts & Pottery Studio at Jersey War Tunnels is owned by Charlotte Langley. She told me, ‘Over the last few years the pottery studio has taken on a life of its own, hosting ladies’ nights, baby groups, birthday parties, hen parties and a few date nights – it is a really fun way to start off the day or evening. In the studio we have a huge selection of items to be decorated including mugs, moneyboxes, figurines, plant pots, teapots, trinket boxes and much, much more! Some of my favourite pieces to create are the clay family impression – a stunning way of capturing those little hand and footprints, lasting mementoes of those little fingers and toes that grow so quickly.’ At Love Bird Gifts & Pottery Studio, no reservations are needed unless there’s more than four people. There’s no studio fee, you just pay for what you paint or decorate, and the helpful staff will give you all the help and guidance you need. Do give them a call on 865972 if you want a helping hand with baby hand and footprints so that they can make sure staff are available.

The Engelsrufer (Angel Whisperer) collection at Letto’s never fails to surprise me. Each time I call in I fall in love with a different item from this stunning collection.

Angel wings in a range of sizes can be worn on their own or with an angel chiming ball; the dream catcher range comes in a choice of design, and Fatima’s Hand pendants and earrings are proving to be very popular.

It’s here – the watch that corrects itself! Watches can lose time when they get any form of shock – well here’s a watch that automatically corrects itself: The new Longines Very High Precision (V.H.P.) timepiece. This is not a smartwatch, it’s a smart watch!

The correction of the hands is initially made immediately, then the watch resets itself again at 3 am, and for added accuracy the movement checks the position of the hands every three days – now that’s what I call accurate!

Its innovative Gear Position Detection (GPD) system stops the movement when there is an impact detected. The movement then realigns the hands to where they should be. It will also reset itself after exposure to a magnetic field.

Prices for the Longines V.H.P. start from just £604. To find out more and to view the full range of Longines timepieces call into H. Letto & Son Ltd., 18 Charing Cross, St Helier. Tel 730952.

Rediscover Jersey

When you live in a holiday island it’s all too easy not to fully appreciate some of the attractions and things to do, all right here, right on our doorstep. This summer take time out to rediscover Jersey, we think you’ll be surprised.

When was the last time you climbed to the top of Mont Orgeuil, or took the duck to Elizabeth Castle? You probably walk or drive past a Jersey Heritage site daily but make this the year that you and your family really delve into Island history. The Castles, along with Hamptonne Country Life Museum with its chickens, to the incredible prehistoric tomb at La Hougue Bie – and many more sites – are all included in the Jersey Heritage family membership, giving you the opportunity to really make the most of the summer. When you join you’ll open the door to hundreds of free events, exhibitions and special days. And you’ll be helping to protect our heritage for generations to come. Family memberships are also available for Jersey Zoo and take it from me one visit to the Zoo is never enough – I have quite happily spent a whole afternoon just watching the orang-utans! Each visit is a new discovery and all ages can enjoy animal antics,

feeding times, and educational talks. Our beaches are amongst the world’s best, and whether you want to chill out on a lounger, or want to try your hand at watersports, Jersey beaches have it all. This summer visit a beach you haven’t been to before; climb down to Portelet Bay or Beauport, discover the secluded Archirondel, go rock pooling at Green Island. And of course, whichever beach you’re on remember to keep an eye on the tides. Often there is no better way to wile away an afternoon than to linger over a delicious lunch alfresco. L’Horizon Beach Hotel & Spa has re-opened its outdoor terrace following a £500k refurbishment designed to make the most of its uninterrupted sea views. The upgraded decked terrace has a retractable electric roof as well as a new glazed wind break allowing diners to enjoy stunning views of St Brelade’s Bay whatever the weather.

For a true staycation check out the facilities at Les Ormes. Luxury self-catering is what they do best. At Les Ormes you can spend quality time together in home-from-home accommodation. There’s a golf course, swimming pools, tennis courts, kids’ activities and so much more right on the doorstep. And if you’re a family that where you all go, the dog has to go too, they have properties perfectly suited for you and your pet.

We all know that our weather cannot be relied on, even at the height of summer, so when a beach day has been ruled out take the opportunity to discover other attractions such as aMaizin’ Adventure Park, Tamba Park, go for a walk in the woods, browse the fabulous arts and crafts at The Harbour Gallery in St Aubin, visit the museums or find out more about the Island’s Occupation. Jersey War Tunnels is now a place of education as well as reflection. Here you can explore more than 1000 metres of tunnels dug 50 metres deep underground, where more than 5000 slave labourers worked. The Jersey War Tunnels exhibition tells the true story of the German occupation in a way that no other attraction does. It gives an insight into what life was really like for Islanders

Relax and enjoy the views on the new terrace at L’Horizon

Escape to a lodge at Les Ormes Resort and chill out in your own hot tub

living in Jersey during WWII. The attraction offers a full day out with a war trail, garden of reflection, visitor centre, cafe and gift shop. The extraordinary Escape Room experience is also a must, with a series of mysterious puzzles and brain-teasing clues. Feeling creative? Call into The Love Bird Gift Shop and Pottery Studio at Jersey War Tunnels. Here you can paint a piece of pottery or even have clay impressions made of your child’s hands and feet. By the way, this is a great place for a fun afternoon for all ages. You may have seen the vintage buses around the Island, so why not jump on board? It’s a fun way to visit the Jersey War Tunnels, the Castles and just generally see more of the Island. Jersey Bus Tours now also have a waterbus. A boat tour will take in the sights of St Aubin’s Bay, Noirmont Point and the south west coast. Seeing the Island from the sea is a whole different experience, a must-do this summer. On an island of just 45 square miles we are truly lucky to have so much to do, so much to see, so much history to discover. Save money on travelling abroad this summer and enjoy a staycation right here on your own holiday island.

HOME LIVING

PROPERTY INSIGHTS With you all the way... By Marcus Matthews of Indigo Estates Many estate agencies simply act as a broking service that matches people to property. However, we are acutely aware that there is far more to successful selling than this alone. Indeed, over 30% of property sales fail to reach completion, falling through for various reasons. One of the main reasons is that a buyer simply gets cold feet and withdraws as a result of “buyer remorse”. This is a familiar phenomenon to estate agents and occurs when a buyer feels overwhelmed by the apparent enormity of the decision to buy and takes the more comfortable “lowrisk” option and does nothing. Perhaps the buyer is offered another property, which they prefer, or something else comes on the market that makes the price they have offered on your home look expensive. Your buyer may lose their job, or get a promotion. They might decide to get married or divorced; they might inherit or win a fortune, or their business may be experiencing difficulties. They could even die! Whilst these types of issues are generally unavoidable and naturally have a profound effect on people’s decision to move, the main problem concerns timing. Because offers in Jersey are not binding until exchange of contracts, the longer the time between offer and exchange, the greater the opportunity there is for the buyer or seller to decide to withdraw. We go to great lengths to help

you move and seek to become very familiar with your circumstances and plans. Our agent will usually

be the same person who negotiates for you and who will be thoroughly involved in any linked transactions.

Should you treat your Bremont MB watch with respect? Not really. We don’t. We freeze it, we bake it, and we shake it. For hours on end. Then we shoot it out of a plant. Just to make sure it’s as tough as we claim it is. What’s more, it has been assembled and tested at our headquarters in Henley-on-Thames. So don’t worry about looking after a Bremont MB. It can look after itself.
