Delivered Island Wide to Over 40,000 Homes

Jason Manford: First World Problems Everybody’s favourite northern comedian, Jason Manford, has announced a brand new tour for 2013. The show promises to feature a wealth of comedy anecdotes, misunderstandings and audience banter delivered with Jason’s likeable charm and teasingly intelligent wit. Jason has had a busy time since he was last on the road. After his opera singing turn saw him emerge the winner on Born To Shine (ITV1) Jason put his new found talent into practice joining Alfie Boe on tour prior to a well-received run in the critically acclaimed hit west-end musical Sweeney Todd alongside Michael Ball and Imelda Staunton. However, his comedy bones weren’t completely idle as he enjoyed appearances on QI (BBC Two), Big Fat Quiz of the Year (Channel 4), and Comedy World Cup (Channel 4). Jason said: “Some of you might think I’ve had a career change what with all the opera and musical theatre I’ve been doing lately. Not

a chance, I’m excited to be getting back to what I really love the most – stand up!” Stand up sets on ‘Live at the Apollo’ (BBC One), ‘Michael McIntyre’s Comedy Roadshow’ (BBC One) and ‘The Royal Variety Performance’ (ITV1, 2009) have all helped establish Jason as a nationally known comic, a position which made him the ideal host of ITV’s reality comedy competi-

tion, Show Me the Funny. A second series of his hilarious creation ‘Walk on the Wild Side’ (BBC One) aired in 2010, and Jason has hosted ‘Comedy Rocks with Jason Manford’ (ITV1) and been a regular panelist on two series of ‘Odd One In’ (ITV1). Zero-hour contracts survey 'may not be accurate' A survey in Jersey into the use of contracts that do not guarantee work may not be accurate, a union has said. The States Statistics Unit is asking businesses how many people they employ on zero-hour contracts following concerns workers could be exploited. Nick Corbel of the Unite union said the data could be skewed because all

businesses did not have to respond. The Statistics Unit said it hoped to produce "statistically robust results" by the end of the year. Mr Corbel said the government was also employing people on zero-hours terms, throwing into question the survey's potential to make a difference. However, when answering questions last month about the Statistics Unit survey, social secu-

rity minister Francis Le Gresley said his department "did not currently directly employ any staff on zero-hour contracts". But he added it did use recruitment agencies to supply temporary staff and they "typically use zerohour contracts for the staff they supply to the department". He said those contractual arrangements were a matter for the agencies and the individual.

Community News Community Jobs Fund helps job seekers gain skills while benefiting Island organisations More than 30 jobs have been created through the Back to Work Community Jobs Fund since its launch in September 2013. Through the fund, up to six months’ wages and social security contributions are paid when young or long-term jobseekers are employed by a charity or organisation in a role which offers a clear additional benefit to the community. Organisations can select candidates who are aged 16 to 24 who have been unemployed for six months or more, or jobseekers of any age that have been unemployed for a year or more. Social Security Minister, Senator Francis Le Gresley, said the incentive was providing both a community benefit and an opportunity for jobseekers to develop their skills.

“This initiative is making a real difference in our community by giving charities and organisations the chance to create new positions with an additional community benefit. Furthermore we are providing a route back to sustainable employment for our jobseekers by creating a platform on which they can gain work experience and develop their skills,” he said. Organisations benefit from Community Jobs Fund One organisation benefiting from the incentive is the Jersey Brain Tumour Charity, which in November recruited Nadia Callec as a charity coordinator. The charity’s chairman, Sue May, said “The Community Jobs Fund application process was very simple and the fund’s team made it even easier. The appointment of Nadia has given us the freedom to spend

more time with the people that really need our support. “Nadia is making significant progress in her role since joining us and she continues to grow within our organisation. With her help we have begun to develop new ideas which we hope to implement in the near future.” Organisations can still apply for the fund by providing details of the role they would like to create and how the community would benefit as a result. Examples of roles created to date include a family support coordinator, a renovator, an education assistant and a children’s club leader. Employers who want to find out more can call the Community Jobs Fund on 447301 or email them.

Bus pass prices reduced in fares review From 1 February, prices frozen on AvanchiCard Pay As You Go, AvanchiCard Unlimited passes have been reduced and cash fares increase by 10p. As part of its on going commitment to ensure that the Island’s bus service remains a great value alternative to the car, LibertyBus is reducing the cost of the AvanchiCard Unlimited passes, and frozen the single fares on the AvanchiCard Pay-as-you-go. This price reduction and price freeze on the AvanchiCards, provides customers with an easy option to avoid the 10 pence cash fare increase. The reduction of the AvanchiCard Unlimited and price freeze on the AvanchiCard Pay-as-you-go has been set to encourage Islanders to use their bus service, which has

seen significant improvements over the past 12 months. Deputy Kevin Lewis, Minister for Transport and Technical Services, commented ‘LibertyBus has now been operating for just over a year and there have been service improvements on many routes, including higher frequencies, notably the 1 and 15 which now operate every 15 minutes Summer daytime, as well as many new Sunday services. The AvanchiCard is another new initiative which provides more options for the customer. I hope more passengers will use this payment method and make the most of the advantageous prices.’ The review has led to the following fares: - AvanchiCard Unlimited bus pass prices will be reduced. Topping up a monthly unlim-

ited pass will drop from £52 to £49, and topping up a weekly unlimited pass will drop from £20 to £19.50. - Fares are frozen when using AvanchiCard Pay As You Go, staying at £1.20 for Fare Band A and £1.70 for Fare Band B - Fares for children and young people are frozen when using AvanchiCard Student, staying at £0.70 - All cash fares will rise by 10p. Fare Band A single journey cash tickets will now cost £1.30, Fare Band B single journey cash tickets will now cost £1.80, child single journey cash tickets will now cost £0.80. - There are no changes to the concessionary travel scheme for older people Fare Band A & B Commuter Passes will no longer be available, as very few people

choose them. Announcing the new prices, Kevin Hart, General Manager at LibertyBus, said. “Ticket prices have not increased for over 2 years in Jersey, however inflation has continued to rise, and this has meant the costs of putting on the service has risen too”. “The decision to increase prices is never easy, which is why we’ve only increased the cash fare and frozen the AvanchiCard Pay As You Go price, giving our customers an option not to pay more. We’ve also reduced the cost of our monthly and weekly AvanchiCard Unlimited

bus passes – making them an even better deal for frequent bus users.” For more information on how to get an AvanchiCard suitable for your travelling needs, you can either visit the Customer Service Desk at Liberation Station, or call the team (01534) 828555.

JCG invites 3 secondary schools to join Hawksford Debate Series Students from De La Salle, Beaulieu and Hautlieu have been invited to team up with Jersey College for Girls (JCG) to take part in the fourth instalment of the JCG Debate Series, which is sponsored by Hawksford. The topic of the next debate, which takes place on Wednesday 12 March 2014, will be: ‘This house believes the decline of the printed word will lead to a decline in literacy standards.’ The decision to involve more Jersey schools in the series was made following the success of October’s event, which saw mixed teams of JCG and Grainville students un-

dertake an animated debate. Teams of girls and boys from both schools came together to tackle the issue of Jersey’s ‘brain drain’ of young talent away from the island, with JCG’s Sixth Form students acting as mentors for the younger Grainville team members. Carl Howarth, principle of JCG, commented: ‘We are delighted to be extending the Hawksford JCG Debate Series to include three further schools. October’s debate, which involved students from Grainville, was a triumph and we felt it was appropriate to open the series to students from more island schools. The series

provides an excellent opportunity for pupils to develop their rhetorical skills and to work together to consider the important issues that many of them could face in the future.’ Chief executive of Hawksford, Peter Murley, has been impressed by the high standard of argument set at previous events, adding: ‘The students have embraced a variety of challenging and thought provoking subjects throughout the series so far. The students always argue with great passion, knowledge and good humour and I can’t wait to see the result of the inclusion of three further schools.’

TTS looking for new caterer for Town Park

Transport and Technical Services (TTS) is looking for a new caterer to operate in the Millennium Town Park. Since opening in 2011, the Town Park has become a very well used facility. As well as people enjoying the park facilities, particularly the playground, there are also a lot of people who use it as a pleasant route into town. TTS is currently seeking

expressions of interest from anyone wishing to establish a year round catering business to service the users of the Park. The caterer will be expected to provide their own kiosk and will be able to connect into the installed water, drainage and electricity services. Full details of how to submit expressions of interest for this catering concession are available from Buckley and Company Limited, Tel: 01534

880880 or email simon@buckleyandcompany.co.uk. Submissions must be made by noon 7 February 2014. Deputy Kevin Lewis, Minister for Transport and Technical Services said: “I think this catering concession has great potential for someone willing to match the needs of the Town Park clientele. We want this facility to enhance the community feel of the park.”

What’s your Street’s Story? Takes a Community Focus for 2014 Jersey Heritage is looking to involve more members of the community in the 2014 What’s your Street’s Story? Series and is calling out to Islanders for their personal accounts of the areas featured in this year’s programme. In 2014, thanks to the generous sponsorship of local law firm Appleby, the Jersey Archive will continue its popular What’s your Street’s Story? series of talks and events and will be open every third Saturday morning of the month from 9am-1pm. In February, Archive staff will offer tours of the award-winning Jersey Archive building. Members of the public who book on the free tours will be taken behind the scenes and will be able to see the strongrooms of the Jersey Archive as well as seeing the cataloguing and conservation workshops. There then follows 9 new areas of research, which have been requested by members

of the public. Within these we will explore the stories of the people who lived, loved and worked as part of the local community and the street’s on which they lived. There will also be an opportunity for keen historians to be involved with a community talk being prepared for September. Nicolle said, “In September we will be talking about Bouley Bay and we thought it would be an opportunity to get researchers involved.” “The idea is that we will get together a team of researchers who will come in every couple of weeks throughout the year to work with the Archive team on investigating the area. What’s your Street’s Story is a community project so this innovation will help widen this scope out further. If anyone

is interested in assisting in this we would be delighted for them to come forward.” “What’s your Story? has been running for seven years and last year was our most popular year ever. Numbers were

New weather section on States of Jersey website Channel Islanders are being asked to give feedback on a new section of the www.gov.je web site providing weather information for the Channel Islands. The new www.gov.je/weather section comes as a result of a joint project between Jersey Met and the States of Jersey web team to replace the www. jerseymet.gov.je site, which looks dated and is running on web servers that are due for replacement. The old site will continue to be available in the short term while testing is completed and user feedback is reviewed. Following this, the existing www.jerseymet.gov.je address will redirect users to the new location. Principal Meteorological Officer Anthony Pallot commented: “The new weather section on www.gov.je is one of several initiatives we’ve been working on in the last year to improve how Channel Islanders can receive forecasts. We launched our Twitter account in March last year and this has proved very popular with 2,700 followers who now receive updated forecasts four times a day. We also worked with the web team to launch a smartphone-optimised website http://m.gov.je/ which contains weather forecasts, tides times as well as information about roadworks, harbour and airport arrivals

and departures information in realtime, and contact details for States departments. “While there are many weather forecast sites available on the internet, the www.gov.je/weather section is one of the few sources that are based on the local knowledge of the Jersey Met team of experts rather than being entirely computer-generated.” Web Services Manager Marcus Ferbrache said “This is part of our ongoing work to consolidate the States of Jersey’s websites and to standardise both the look and feel and the underlying technology. Now that the Jersey Met content is part of the gov.je site, it will benefit from future upgrades including a major refresh of the site planned for 2014 which will reflect the popularity of tablet computers and smartphones to access the internet.” People can email feedback on the www.gov.je/weather pages to webteam@gov.je.

Guernsey & Ormer restaurant by Shaun Rankin is the most Jersey learn southerly newcomer to the AA accreditations list. The restaurant, which was awarded a Michelin star ICC World also in 2013 only four months afopening, is the only JerCricket League ter sey restaurant to be added to the awards list this year. dates The long-established Rosette Channel Islands rivals Guernsey and Jersey have learned their schedule for Division Five of the ICC World Cricket League in Malaysia. Guernsey will kick off their campaign against Cayman Islands on 6 March, with Jersey facing Nigeria on the same day. The two Channel Islands will face each other on 12 March in the last set of round-robin matches, while the final takes place on 13 March. Tanzania and hosts Malaysia are the other teams in the six-nation event. Jersey qualified for Division Five after an impressive victory in Division Six of the ICC's tournament for smaller cricket nations.

scheme recognises exceptional cooking across the UK. Success or failure in achieving Rosettes is based on one or more visits by an AA inspector to a hotel or restaurant. The entire meal, including ancillary items, is assessed. Only about 10% of restaurants nationwide are of a standard that is worthy of One Rosette and above. It’s a huge achievement for Ormer to have received three Rosettes in its infancy. The AA’s description of a three AA Rosette restaurant is as follows: ‘Outstanding restaurants that achieve standards that demand recognition well beyond their local area. The cooking is underpinned by the selection and sympathetic treatment of the highest quality ingredients. Timing, seasoning and the judgment of flavour combinations will consist-

ently be excellent. These virtues tend to be supported by other elements, such as intuitive service and a well-chosen wine list. Around 10% of the restaurants/hotels within the AA Restaurant Guide have Three Rosettes and above.’ Shaun Rankin, chef proprietor of Ormer restaurant, says: ‘To have achieved three AA Rosettes with Ormer still in

its infancy is fantastic and places the restaurant in an elite group. We are immensely proud of our achievements since opening in 2013 and credit goes to the entire Ormer team for striving for these high standards. Jersey has become a culinary destination due to an abundance of world-class produce and the hard work of our hospitality

sector. Ormer has welcomed a number of guests who have flown into the Island specifically for dinner and this is a great compliment. We’re going to continue to strive for excellence and we’re grateful that the AA inspectors understood our vision for Ormer and enjoyed their experiences.’

Highlands catering students Alcohol and Licensing gain insight into life at 5* hotel Strategy Students from a Highlands College catering course visited the five-star Grand Jersey Hotel and Spa to gain a practical insight into a working hospitality business. The 25 catering students, who are in their first year, were treated to a tour of the hotel, a presentation about the restaurant and its facilities and a complementary lunch served in Victorias restaurant. The presentation was delivered by Eamonn Elliott, general manager and Andy Dentten, HR director. They gave the students an insight into their roles, their background, training and offered some valuable advice on career progression and the characteristics needed to succeed within the industry. The initiative was set up following an enquiry to Grand Jersey by the Highlands College catering school. Mihaela Lazarescu, restaurant manager at the Highlands Academy of Culinary Arts, commented: ‘This experience was

a fantastic opportunity for our students to gain first-hand exposure to the workings of a successful hospitality business. The initiative provided the aspiring caterers with an alternative means of accessing knowledge and assisted with the practical application of the school curriculum. We would like to thank Eamonn and Andy for taking the time to share their knowledge and expertise so eloquently on the day.’ General manager at Grand Jersey, Eamonn Elliott said he enjoyed speaking at the

presentation and was impressed with the levels of interest shown during the visit. ‘These students are the future of the hospitality industry in Jersey and it was great to see so much enthusiasm for the initiative,’ said Mr Elliott. ‘Today it is increasingly difficult for young people to get jobs, particularly those with good career prospects, and we recognise the importance of helping the students to complement their academic studies with relevant practical experience.’

A draft Alcohol and Licensing strategy has been published, for comment, by the Council of Ministers. The draft strategy sets out the Council’s overarching policy and strategic objectives in relation to alcohol, the actions that will be taken to deliver those objectives and proposals for the introduction of new fit-for-purpose licensing law. The strategy sets out a range of proposed actions, which are of equal importance and designed to work together to help tackle the challenges that alcohol brings without negatively impacting those who drink sensibly or the licensed trade. These include: • a focus on education and improving public awareness of the effects of alcohol • an improved licensing system, including new licence categories and introduction of personal licences in addition to licences for premises • increased powers for police to close licenced premises in order to prevent crime and disorder • a review of opening hours • a review of drink driving limits • a review of price of alcohol

including drinks promotions. Assistant Chief Minister, Paul Routier, said: “For many people alcohol is simply an enjoyable, well-managed part of their lifestyle but for others it is a very real problem; whether that is because they drink too much or because they suffer as a result of other people drinking too much. Issues relating to alcohol are also the responsibility of other Ministries, including: • Health and Social Services for public health approaches to preventing alcohol-related harm and the provision of treatment and care to islanders with ill health caused by alcohol, and alcohol dependence • Home Affairs for the police and fire services that support the safety of Islanders • the Chief Minister’s Department for broader social policy. The draft strategy is available for comment until 24 March 2014 on www.gov.je/consult. Economic Development Department are holding briefing meetings for existing and potential future licence holders, details of which are also available on-line.

The States of Jersey is working in partnership with local charities to enhance the short-break support that is available to Island families. Following the signing of a Ministerial Decision in December to release the funding of £700,000, work has begun on a major overhaul of the facilities at Oakwell in St Brelade. Oakwell provides a facility for children with learning disabilities and/ or additional physical needs, allowing their parents or primary carers the opportunity to take short breaks while knowing their children are being well looked after. All ages up to 18 are

catered for. Jersey Property Holdings will carry out the works using a number of local contractors; this will include increasing the number of bedrooms available at Oakwell from four to five, and a significant upgrade to amenities. All areas of the property will now be readily accessible for wheelchairs, and features will include a new sensory area, swimming pool changing area and kitchen. Both service users and staff were consulted regarding the details of the proposed work. Short breaks will be provided at Maison des Landes in St Ouen for the duration of the

work, which should be completed by summer 2014. Deputy Anne Pryke, Minister for Health and Social Services, said: “This project is the result of the excellent partnership between the public sector and local third sector organisations like Variety and the Lions Club, and will provide a very significant enhancement to the provision of this valuable service.” The funding for the project included £50,000 from the Variety Club, and £25,000 from the Lions Club, who chose the project to be one of the prime beneficiaries of the 2014 Swimarathon.

The De Lancey and De La Hanty Foundation, which supports and offers funding to the fields of medicine, law, education and culture, has granted Jersey Opera House a total of £10,175.00 to refurbish its piano. The Steinway became one of the theatre’s prized assets after the refurbishment in 2000, when islanders generously collected money to purchase the second-hand piano. Its much-needed refurbishment can now be carried out with the funding from the De Lancey and De La Hanty Foundation. Jersey Opera House Theatre Director Jasmine Hendry commented: “We are incredibly grateful to the Foundation for this grant which will allow us to commence the refurbishment process with immediate effect. The Steinway is so important to the theatre; it is in constant use by touring companies, venue hirers, the Eisteddfod and local amateur groups so this donation to cover the repairs will allow its use to continue.” A spokesperson for the Foundation commented: “We sincerely hope the Steinway piano and its music will be enjoyed by the visitor of Jersey Opera House for many years to come”.

Primary school children across the Island are being given the chance to make their mark and win great prizes ahead of the 2014 Swimarathon. The annual colouring competition invites children to design the front cover of the event’s daily bulletins showing ‘Children Having Fun’. The entries will be reviewed and the designs of five lucky school children will be chosen to feature during the course of the Swimarathon week. Competition organiser Lion Peter Tabb says: ‘The 2014 Swimarathon will be supporting Jersey’s children’s charities. With so many children taking part, ‘children having fun’ could not be a more appropriate theme for this year’s colouring competition.’ ‘The winning five designs will also be showcased in a special feature published around the time of the Swimarathon. The artists themselves will win £250 prize money for their school and also receive an individual prize, so this is a

fantastic opportunity to get creative.’ Oakwell Children’s Respite Centre has been selected as the main beneficiary of the funds raised overall by participants in the event. An additional 25 Jersey-based children’s charities will also receive a share of at least £25,000. The designs submitted must be in colour and fit on an A4 page, allowing space for the Swimarathon logo and the date of the bulletin (recommended size 180mmx180mm). The closing date for entries is Friday 21 February 2014. The judges for the drawing competition will

be Lion Chris Clarke, President of the Lions Club of Jersey, Brian McKenzie, Head of Design at the Jersey Evening Post and Leo the Lion on behalf of the event’s sponsors, RBC Wealth Management. To enter, or for more details about the design completion, contact Lion Peter Tabb on 726704. The 2014 Swimarathon takes place between 12–16 March at Les Quennevais Sports Centre,. Information and registrations are available from the Swimarathon Administrator, PO Box 397, St Helier, Jersey, JE4 9ZX or via email swimarathon@jerseymail.co.uk

What’s your Resolutions for a healthier New Year! There’s something about a new year that drives us to wipe the slate clean, put our bad habits behind us, and start fresh. We look back at the resolutions we managed to keep and those that eluded us, and we make promises to take better care of ourselves in the upcoming year. I’m a big fan of resolutions – as long as they’re reasonable. Resolutions don’t do you much good if they’re abandoned before Valentine’s Day. You want to focus on the changes you can practice every day – since they’re more likely to stick with you. So here is my list of the top 10 best resolutions for a healthier 2014.

or tea near you and sip throughout the day.

3. Don’t eat in front of a screen.

out 2014

7.

Include protein every time you eat. Protein satisfies hunger better than fats or carbs. Have some at every meal, and grab foods like yogurt, nuts, high protein cereals, shakes, or single-serve cans of tuna for snacks.

8.

Have a fruit or vegetable at every meal. Fruits and veggies give you the most nutrition for the fewest calories. And, they’re full of water and fiber, which means they fill you up – not out.

9. Don’t skip meals.

Skipping meals rarely works as a calorie-control measure – you’ll just end up making up for it at the 1. Eat breakfast. Breakfast eaters are next meal. Eating small meals and snacks more likely to maintain a healthy weight. every few hours is a better strategy. And breakfast will also help keep you 10. Pump some iron. Strength training clear-headed all morning. Your brain exercise burns calories, can perk up your needs fuel after an overnight fast. mood, and it helps to keep your bones 2. Move more. Aside from your regular strong. It also helps you build muscle exercise, try to work more activity into mass which makes you stronger, and can your day. Take the stairs, walk or bike to ultimately increase your resting metabolic run errands, pace the floor while you’re rate. on the phone, and walk to a co-worker’s Making Them Last throughoffice instead of e-mailing. Whether it’s a computer, TV or movie screen, when you’re eating in front of it, you’re not focusing on your food – you’re likely to end up eating more, and enjoying it less.

4.

Stop eating on the run. This means eating in the car, when you’re walking down the street running errands, or while you’re getting dressed in the morning. Take time to sit down, focus on your meal, and enjoy.

5. Watch the liquid calories.

Unless your liquid is a meal in itself, fluids should be calorie-free as often as possible. Get most of your calories from foods, not beverages – it’s one of the easiest ways to cut out excess calories.

6.

Stay hydrated. Many of the body’s processes rely on water, but plenty of people don’t drink enough. Keep water

But as you’re thinking about your own health and fitness goals for the upcoming year, I’d like to add a few words of encouragement – with some thoughts on how you can make promises to yourself that you can actually keep. If you look over my list, you’ll see that it’s really a list of 10 healthy behaviors. I wrote the list this way for a couple of reasons. First, I think too many people make resolutions that focus on the end result (“I’m going to lose 25 pounds this year”) rather than on the behavior changes (“I’m going to eat more fruits and vegetables”) that will help them get to where they want to go. Secondly, the behavior changes I’m suggesting are reasonable – they’re things that most people can do – and they’re changes that, taken together, can lead to a healthier you.

The Big Monthly Question – How long will it take me to lose weight? Every time I have a new client scheduled to see me for weight loss, I have a pretty good idea of how our first conversation will go. The first thing they usually want to know is how much I think they should weigh. The answer is usually less than straightforward and that question is inevitably followed up by a similar query: “how long will it take?”. I’ve had this same conversation countless times over the years, and my answer is always the same – “it depends”. Not a satisfying response, I realize, but the rate at which a person will lose weight depends on a lot of things. It’s like a road trip. You can look at the map, determine how many miles you have to travel, figure your average speed and then estimate how long it will take you to get there. That works sometimes. But maybe you come across a traffic jam, or a detour. Maybe you drive through a town you’ve never been to and decide to stop a while. It’s much the same with weight loss, even though the math is also fairly simple. I can estimate how many calories you burn at rest (called your resting metabolic rate), and then tack on some extra calories for your current level of activity. If you want to lose a pound in a week’s time, you’ve got to come up about 500 calories short of that number

every day – either by eating 500 fewer calories, or burning off an extra 500 through exercise or, more likely, some combination of the two . The problem is that there are just too many things that affect the final outcome. For one thing, estimates of how many calories you burn every day are just that – estimates. Keeping track of how many calories you eat is just estimate, too – and most studies say that people underestimate the calories they eat by at least 20%. And what about those calories you think you’re burning? An exercise chart might tell you that swimming burns 500 calories an hour – but are you swimming nonstop for 60 minutes? Are you even swimming at all? So just like that road trip, you can make a rough guess as to how long it will take you to reach your goal. But you need to accept that it’s only that – a guess. If you consistently cut 500 calories from what you need – then yes, you should drop about a pound per week. But just like when you drive your car, you may not go at a consistently steady speed or burn through

your fuel at a perfectly consistent rate. And just like traffic jams and detours, things get in the way to slow us down or get us off track. But eventually we get back on the road, and keep going. So if you’re wondering ‘how long will it take?’ I encourage you to focus instead on all positive changes that are made

along the way. Because in the long run, if you improve your diet and get more active, the weight will take care of itself – in its own time. And just like a road trip, sometimes it’s best to focus more on the trip, and less on the destination.

Tune up your immune system! Having a family is a blessing however with 2 girls at nursery, we always brace our self for the ‘back-to-nursery cough and cold’ that sweeps through the house during their first week back in the classroom. With the new school year upon us, kids are going to be bringing home more than just homework and new friends – they’re sure to bring home plenty of germs, too. And even if you don’t have kids at home, you’re still more likely to get sick as the weather turns colder – so now is a good time to look at all you can do nutritionally to help keep your immune system running in tip-top shape. Despite what your parents or grandparents might have told you, you don’t catch cold from being out in the cold air (or, as my mother always insisted, from going outdoors with wet hair). But when the weather turns chilly, we spend more time indoors – which means we’re in closer contact with more people, and there’s less air circulating – so we’ve got more exposure to the germs that can make us sick. Your body has a built-in defense, of course – your immune system. It’s your own personal army of ‘soldiers’ that protects your body by identifying anything foreign – from a virus to a bacteria to a parasite – and then seeking it out and destroying it. And your body does rely on a good nutrition and a healthy lifestyle to keep your defenses up. For one thing, if you eat a healthy diet and take care of yourself, you’re more likely to maintain your good health. Fruits and vegetables are key players because they provide an abundance of phytonutrients – natural compounds found in all plant foods that help to promote health by serving as antioxidants. You need an-

tioxidants to balance out the processes in your body that cause oxidation. Oxidative processes are a normal part of metabolism, but oxidation can run rampant in cells if it’s not kept in check – and that can weaken the body’s ability to fight illness. So your body relies on a steady source of antioxidants from fruits and veggies to reduce this oxidant stress and, in turn, help to support immune function. Your immune system also has some ‘special forces’ in the form of white blood cells. These cells produce specialized proteins – called antibodies – that seek out and destroy invading viruses and bacteria. Since antibodies are proteins, you need adequate protein in the diet to ensure you’ll be able to manufacture the antibodies your body needs. Healthy protein foods – like fish, poultry, lean meats, soy foods and low fat dairy products – provide the building blocks that your body needs to make these specialized proteins. Keeping your digestive system healthy is also important in supporting immune function. Your digestive tract is home to trillions of bacteria that have numerous functions in promoting health. Some strains of bacteria help you digest the fiber in your foods, others consume intestinal gas, while others produce vitamins, like vitamin K and vitamin B12. When

your system is populated with these “good” bacteria, they also serve to ‘crowd out’ the potentially harmful bacteria that might enter your digestive tract. Some of the best sources of these friendly bacteria are cultured dairy products – like yogurt. Eating well really does pave the road to good health. And to help your body in the fight against foreign invaders, your internal ‘army’ needs the best nutrition possible. If you can not feed this army my best tip is to facilitate it with supplementation. So call in the troops – and dry your hair!

Liquid Calories – The secret Assassin! Liquid calories can add up quickly. You might know how many calories you eat every day – but how many calories are you drinking? Beverages can pack a surprising number of calories…just ask the client I saw last week. “I don’t get it,” he told me. “I’m watching my calories, I think I get enough exercise, but my weight just won’t budge!” Problem was, he was only watching the calories in the foods he ate – completely ignoring the calories in the beverages he drank during the day… the coffee he consumes all morning long (doused with sugar), the fizzy drinks at lunch, the (several) vodka and cranberry juice cocktails that help him unwind at the end of the day. Imagine his surprise when I tallied it all up – and he realized that he was taking in close to 1000 calories a day from beverages alone. Liquid calories don’t fill you up One of the reasons that we may ‘forget’ about the

calories we drink is that they don’t fill us up very much. Most of the fluids we drink don’t take up that much room in the stomach – it’s almost as if they ‘fall through the cracks’. And as a result, we don’t often adjust for the extra liquid calories we drink by taking in less food – we just pour the fluids right on top. Sugary drinks add up fast Sugary drinks are certainly a big part of the problem. Although my client seemed pretty clueless about his lunchtime drink consumption, and when I ask my clients how they might cut out some extra calories, many of say they’d simply stop drinking fizzy drinks. And that would be a great start. Fizzy drinks, of course, are loaded with sugar – and if you were to quit a daily fizzy drink habit, you could drop about 15 pounds / 7 kilos in a year’s time. But fizzy drinks are just part of the problem when it comes to liquid calories. There’s also the fruit drinks, sweetened teas, and coffee drinks that contribute hundreds of calories to the average person’s daily intake. The other issue with liquids is that they go down so easily. It’s simply faster and easier to slurp liquid calories, than it is to chew solid foods. If you’ve ever seen people down a can of Coke in just a few gulps, that’s more than 10 teaspoons of sugar and 150 calories in seconds flat. Lower Calorie Choices If liquid calories are a problem for you, try to steer yourself toward healthier, lower calorie choices. Water, mineral water and plain iced tea are great. If you can’t handle the taste of plain water, try mixing in just a splash of fruit juice or Aloe Vera for flavor. Sports drinks are generally much lighter in calories than fruit and fizzy drinks, and might be a good choice when it’s

hot or when you’re active. And adults, take note: alcoholic beverages can add up really fast. My client’s vodka and cranberry juice habit added nearly 900 calories to his daily intake. Your best choices are a glass of wine or a bottle of light beer – either of which comes in at about 100 calories. But watch the sexy cocktails - a typical margarita can set you back more than be 400 calories – and that’s before you dive into the accompanying pot of nuts! Top Tip – Drink 2-3 litres of water a day and for a special lemon and lime twist add Herbalife’s Aloe Vera concentrate, delivering a organic detox while you hydrate.

Early morning workouts – Alarm or not alarm that is the Question! 5 reasons to set it! Ever wondered why athletes often make sure they get in an early morning workout or training session? Let me assure you – it’s not only to get it out of the way for the day, or because they are all happy morning people! There is always a method behind the madness when it comes to sports training. As a Fitness Professional my reason was simple, I knew that an early morning workout would positively affect my performance and attitude throughout my day. Getting up early requires discipline and generally people with discipline are successful. After adjusting to the initial shock of opening my eyes and it still being dark, you soon get used to the routine and at that point I realized that I performed better during my workout early in the morning. Scientifically it makes sense that our body is more efficient after a good rest and, as most people get their largest dose of rest and recovery at night, the morning is a time when your body is firing on all cylinders. (Moms with children under 3 may disagree)! You may also find you are more focused early in the morning before you face the challenges of your day-to-day task list.

There are good reasons for setting your alarm early and jumpstarting your day with a positive jolt, not just the sense of accomplishment by the time of 8am every morning! Five Tips to successfully escape the bed covers Focus An early morning workout will free up the rest of your day and allow you to focus on the things you need to achieve. Prioritize We all have good intentions and I hear from so many people who say they always PLAN to workout but, over the course of each day, their time just fills up and they don’t prioritize exercise over the hundreds of other things they need to do. Getting up early and starting your day with a workout can’t derail your plans. Be Positive Improve your mood with a natural rush of healthy hormones. Exercise promotes the release of happy endorphins in your body. Starting your day with an early morning workout will generate a happy, positive feeling that will impact your own life and the lives of people you come into contact with all day long. Achieve Success and the feeling of

achievement will help you to build confidence. There are few better feelings than accomplishing a goal, both in sports and in life. Confidence is a terrific byproduct that comes from determination and success. Metabolize Morning workouts can help you to burn extra fat throughout

The truth about sugar in fruits? During a recent wellness evaluation, a client dismissed the health benefits of fruit, as she put it, “they are all full of sugar. You won’t be surprised to hear this wasn’t the first time I’d heard this ‘sugar in fruit = bad’ idea. This thought that fruit is somehow a bad thing to eat came into full swing with the low carb diet craze a few years ago. But the myth persists. Not a week goes by that I don’t hear someone tell me that they avoid fruit because it’s “all sugar” or “loaded with carbs”. So, I’m here to set the record straight and come to the defense of some of the world’s healthiest foods – fresh, whole fruits. Sugar in fruit – what are the facts? I’ll tackle the “fruit is all sugar” statement first – because it’s just plain wrong. Fresh fruit offers so much more than the natural sugar it contains – including water, vitamins, minerals, fiber and phytonutrients (those naturally-occurring plant compounds that have wide ranging beneficial effects on the body). Where else can you get a package like that for about 75 calories per serving? The idea that fruit is “loaded with carbs” or is “full of sugar” needs to be put into perspective, too. It’s true that when you eat fruit, the overwhelming majority of the calories you consume are supplied by carbohydrate – mostly in the form of fructose, which is the natural sugar in fruit. But that’s the nature not just of fruit, but of all plant foods – they’re predominantly carbohydrate (and that means not just natural sugars, but healthy starches as well as structural elements, like cellulose, that provide fiber). When you eat vegetables, the majority of the calories you’re eating come from carbohydrate, too. But you don’t hear people complaining that vegetables are “loaded with carbs”. Before dismissing foods as being loaded with sugar, or too high in carbs, consider not only the amount of

the day. By kick-starting your day with exercise, you are also boosting your metabolism and forcing your body to use energy to re-generate during the day. Not swayed by my five reasons to exercise early? Well, as I always say: some exercise is better than no exercise and, really, whatever time of day you can

sugar or carbs you’re eating, but the form of the carbohydrate, too. There’s a big difference between the nutritional value of the natural carbohydrates found in fruits and other plant foods – the sugars, starches and fibers – and what’s found (or, more accurately, what’s not found) in all the empty calories we eat from added sugars that find their way into everything from brownies to barbecue sauce. Faced with a serving of fruit, how much sugar are we talking about, anyway? An average orange has only about 12 grams of natural sugar (about 3 teaspoons) and a cup of strawberries has only about 7 grams – that’s less than two teaspoons. And either way, you’re also getting 3 grams of fiber, about a full day’s worth of vitamin C, healthy antioxidants and some folic acid and potassium to boot – and it’ll only cost you about 50 or 60 calories. “All sugar”? I think not. By contrast, a bottle of cola will set you back about 200 calories and, needless to say, won’t be supplying

squeeze in a workout is fine. Just so long as you do squeeze in the time to be active in some way every day! Exercise at any time of day can provide your mind and body with a life-changing boost. Just make an effort to be consistent and don’t let excuses stop you from being the best you can be.

any antioxidants, vitamins, minerals or fiber. You’ll just be chugging down some carbonated water, maybe some artificial color and flavor, and somewhere in the neighborhood of 50 grams of added sugar – about 1/3 of a cup. Now that’s what I call “full of sugar”.

New zebra crossings for TTS plans to install six more bus Grenville/Green Street shelters ...

Transport and Technical Services (TTS) is proposing to install two new zebra crossings on the junction of Grenville Street and Green Street and would like to know if the public have any comments to make on the proposals. TTS was asked to look at the merits and feasibility of these crossings as part of the Sustainable Transport Policy by the Connétable of St Helier. The existing island at that location was found to be well used by pedestrians to cross the busy junction. However, a zebra crossing with widened pavements would make it easier for pedestrians and drivers to see each other and promote

safer crossing. Following on from that, the Department has drawn up some draft proposals which include widening of the pavements on the north, east and west of the junction and installing zebra crossings with Belisha beacons to cross Grenville Street. Further details and drawings of the project can be found on www.gov.je/consult. Anyone wishing to comment on the proposals is asked to contact the Department either by email to tts@gov.je or in writing addressed to Transport Policy – Grenville Street Crossing, Transport and Technical Services, PO Box 412, South Hill, St Helier by Friday 7 February.

Transport and Technical Services (TTS) is proposing to install six new bus shelters and wants to hear any comments on the sites chosen. TTS is committed to achieving the objectives of the States of Jersey Sustainable Transport Policy, which aims to reduce peak hour traffic by 15%. One of the means identified by which this can be achieved is increasing the number of bus passengers. It is hoped that by creating a better environment at the bus stops, more people will use the bus.Over the last couple of years, TTS installed 18 new shelters across the Island. They have now identified an additional six sites where it is possible and desirable to

erect new bus shelters, but before they do so, they are giving the public an opportunity to comment on the proposals. The locations are: • Grouville Arsenal • Corbiere • Clos des Sables (East bound) • Rozel terminus • Dicq Slipway (Westbound) • Midland Stores (Southbound)

Drawings showing the proposed bus shelters can be viewed in the TTS reception at South Hill or online at www. gov.je/consult. Anyone wishing to comment on the schemes can do so by email to tts@gov. je or by writing to Transport and Technical Services by 14th February 2014

New Police HQ: Preparatory work begins Applications now open for the Jersey Water 2014 Undergraduate Bursary Award

Work to develop the new Police HQ continues. The project team has completed a contractor engagement process and a number of local contractors have been shortlisted to tender for the construction of the building. The Assistant Treasury Minister, Deputy Eddie Noel, said: “These early preparatory works are an important step towards the development of the first purpose built Police HQ in Jersey’s history. This

work complies with a condition on the Planning Permit and has been specified by professionals with the long-term welfare of the trees in mind. “Over the coming months further important developments are planned to take place, including the submission of a Building Control application, briefing local contractors about the project and the awarding of a contract for construction. “The project team is focused

on starting building work this summer. This will provide further stimulus to our construction industry during what continues to be a difficult time.” It is anticipated that construction work will begin during July 2014 and that the building will be completed in June 2016. Other preparatory work will include an archaeological investigation, which is expected to take place shortly before the main contract begins.

Now in its fifth year and launched today, Jersey Water is offering a Bursary Award towards the cost of studies and providing paid work experience during holiday periods to one successful applicant. The bursary scheme started in 2009 by the then Chairman of Jersey Water, David Norman. The aim then as it is now is to provide support both financially along with work experience to be made available to a local student undertaking a first undergraduate degree in any of the following areas: - Engineering (civil, mechanical, electrical) - Water resources, management and conservation - Environment sciences - Chemistry Cheryl Kaye, HR Manager for Jersey Water commented “We are delighted to be offering for the fifth year a Bursary Award to help sup-

port a local student along with paid work experience during holiday time. Based on feedback from our previous students we continue to ensure that work experience provided is relevant and practical to the degree the student is studying. 4G moves one step closer Successful launch for in the Channel Islands new peer-to-peer lendCICRA (the Channel Islands Competition and Regulatory Authorities) has launched a second consultation on spectrum allocation which brings 4G introduction in the Channel Islands one step closer. 4G technology allows for wireless communication of high-speed data for mobile devices. This requires specific spectrum which will be awarded in the Channel Islands in 2014. CICRA has published a proposed approach for carrying out a comparative evaluation of applications for the spectrum to progress the availability of 4G technology in Guernsey and Jersey, and is seeking views on the approach. In the UK and many other jurisdictions these awards have been made through auctions but CICRA does not believe such an approach is the best way forward for the Channel Islands. Respondents to CICRA’s initial July consultation indicated that operators looking to provide 4G services require more spectrum than will be available. CICRA believes a competitive process is therefore necessary to decide who will receive the spectrum. CICRA, which is approaching spectrum allocation jointly across the islands, has proposed that spectrum is allocated in ‘spectrum bundles’ and that implementation is in two stages; the first being the two spectrum bundles containing more of the highly sought-after 800 MHz spectrum with a second stage offering operators

smaller allocations of 800 MHz spectrum but significantly more in the higher 2.6 GHz spectrum band. CICRA chief executive, Andrew Riseley, said: “We are focussed on promoting consumers’ interests, in the short and long term, with regard to prices and costs as well as assessing the availability and range of services. To that end we are looking to award spectrum to which applicants will best meet these criteria. Ofcom is the licensing authority for spectrum in the Channel Islands. CICRA will determine a proposed allocation and that recommendation will be considered by Ofcom when issuing spectrum licences. Mr Riseley said that the regulator’s proposed evaluation model and allocation of spectrum packages is a significant step. “Spectrum is a highly technical area but we are pleased to be in a position where, once we have taken into consideration the consultation responses, we can undertake the selection procedure and begin the process of introducing 4G to the islands,” he said. “As well as opening up more spectrum to current and potential operators, CICRA is also proposing to give greater freedom to telecoms operators in the choice of technology they may deploy on the various spectrum bands they hold.” Those wishing to respond to the consultation should refer to the consultation document, available on CICRA’s website: www.cicra.gg.

levels of Business The latest Jersey Business Tendency Survey (for the quarter ending December 2013), released today, demonstrates a positive overall increase in business activity in Jersey compared with the previous quarter. The finance sector saw significant improvements in the latest quarter in a number of areas, with the indicator for Business Optimism recording its highest level to date, and Future Business Activity and Profitability reaching their highest levels since 2011. Geoff Cook, CEO, Jersey Finance commented: “These latest figures from government are welcome confirmation of the recovery and growth that we have been seeing in the market place. The long-term outlook as far as employment in the finance industry is concerned is positive on balance, with just over half of finance firms anticipating

a rise in employment numbers in 2014. Profit expectations are also encouraging, with 42% of companies reporting that they anticipate profits to increase in the first quarter of 2014, and over half of financial services firms expecting profits to increase over the course of the whole year. It is particularly interesting that the legal subsector is optimistic on long-term profits. “It is pleasing to see such figures and we are hopeful that these upward trends can be sustained by maintaining our plans for the development of the finance industry, the winning of new business in key markets, and through the support of Government and the regulator.”
