Jersey Post Re-Cycles for Africa We often take for granted having a means of transport to get to and from work, school and essential services such as health facilities.

However imagine if the only way you could get there was a long exhausting journey on foot, come rain or shine…

This year Jersey Post is going to support poor families in Africa, by working with the charity, Re-Cycle. Jersey Post is donating 26 former postal bikes and parts, in order to enable African families to dramatically improve their lifestyle.

Re-Cycle is a non-profit organisation that receives bikes and parts from all over the UK, which they later ship to Africa.

The bikes enable easier transportation of water, fire wood and food, as a bicycle lightens this burden of walking for hours in the scorching sun, and dramatically improves their health.

To make it as cost effective as possible the organisation needs at least 400 bikes to fill a container.

Jersey’s St Thomas’ Church lightning strike costs £30K Repairs to a church in Jersey which was struck by lightning during recent storms will cost about £30,000.

A lightning conductor prevented any structural damage to St Thomas' Roman Catholic Church, but many electrical fittings were burnt out.

The leader of the island's Catholic congregations, Monsignor Nicholas France, said the repair costs would be covered by insurance.

Among the things broken are amplifiers for the church's audio system, some light fittings and the electronic mechanism for the church's boilers, which was blasted off the wall in the boiler house.

Insurers have already carried out an inspection of the building, Monsignor France said.

Independent report on changes to Island Plan published

A report by independent Planning Inspectors into the latest review of the Island Plan has been released by the Minister for Planning and Environment.

The report’s authors, independent Planning Inspectors, Chris Shepley and Alan Langton, have set out their views and comments on proposed changes to the Island Plan. They take into account the nearly 700 comments made as part of the public consultation and January’s Examination in Public of the most contentious issues and proposed changes. Deputy Duhamel will now reflect on the inspectors’ comments and their recommendations before deciding whether to amend his proposals to change the Island Plan. The Minister will publish his response to the Inspectors’ recommendations when he lodges his proposed revision to the Island Plan in the States later this year.

States Members will have an opportunity to propose their own amendments to the Minister’s proposals, which, if they raise new issues, will be the subject of further consultation and independent examination. It is likely that the proposed changes to the Island Plan will be debated by the States in June.

Beer lovers from around the world were able to sample a little bit of Jersey at the weekend when Liberation Group attended the Craft Beer Rising Festival in London.

The Group’s Liberation Blonde was one of more than 200 different craft beers to be showcased at the sell-out event which attracted thousands of visitors and over 60 breweries from across the globe.

Widely known as one of the hottest tickets in town, Craft Beer Rising is an event at the heart of the craft beer renaissance, paying homage to locally brewed beers produced with passion and innovation. Liberation Group have been moving into the craft beer arena over the last year and the festival was the perfect opportunity for the team to introduce their locally brewed Liberation Blonde to a larger, international audience. The Group also took along a batch of their awardwinning Liberation Ale which

proved a hit throughout the weekend long event.

Mark Crowther, Chief Executive of Liberation Group said the weekend had been a great success: ‘It was fantastic to be a part of the Craft Beer Rising festival and to see people enjoying Liberation Ale and Liberation Blonde alongside beers created by some of the finest brewers in the world. Preparing for the toughest footrace on earth – the Marathon des Sables Jersey runner James Manners is to run six laps of St Ouen’s beach carrying a heavily laden rucksack – and that is going to be a walk in the park compared to the reason why he’s training – the Marathon des Sables.

The Marathon des Sables – or Marathon of the sands has been called the toughest footrace on earth. It is a multi-stage race through one of the world’s most inhospitable climates, the Sahara desert. Temperatures can rise to about 50 degrees Celsius, and runners will cover around 156 miles – the equivalent to six marathons in six days over uneven rocky ground and sand dunes. Add to that the fact that runners must carry on their backs everything they will need to survive – except water – and you can see what a big challenge it is.

Jersey runner James Manners is competing in this year’s race, starting April 4th – despite having a hamstring injury which has hampered his training for the past six weeks: ‘I enjoy long distance running, I did the Round the Rock ultra marathon in Au-

gust, that was 48 miles, but this really is the ultimate challenge and will test me not just physically, but also mentally. Not only have I had an injury to cope with, but the recent weather hasn’t helped. To try to help me acclimatise to the conditions in the Sahara I am going to do some Bikram yoga which involves exercising in a hot and humid room.

‘I am running for Facing Africa, a charity which funds skilled volunteer surgeons

to perform facial reconstructive surgery on children who have been the victims of Noma, an acute and ravaging infection affecting the face.

This charity really changes lives and as I work for an African bank this seemed a natural choice.’James is being sponsored by his employer, Standard Bank. Head of Marketing Claire Reid says: ‘All of James’ colleagues are behind him in this amazing physical challenge. To complete one marathon is a huge

test of endurance, but to run more than six in such harsh conditions is gong to require great depths of stamina and mental resolve. Jersey Housing Department becomes Andium Homes Jersey's social housing department is to be renamed Andium Homes once it becomes a private company.

The States of Jersey approved plans to turn the Housing Department into a new firm, giving it greater decision-making and revenue-raising freedoms.

Deputy Andrew Green said Andium was the name the Romans gave Jersey in the 1st Century BC. He said: "We wanted to include a

reference to Jersey in our name to reflect our pride in the Island."

Deputy Green said the current housing department staff would be transferred to the new company, which is expected to launch in July.

In December politicians approved plans to borrow £250m to build new social housing properties and refurbish existing ones to be operated by the new company.

Evans House opening adds new dimension to help for homeless adults The Lieutenant-Governor is to conduct the official opening of a new facility in St Helier, providing a valuable addition to the accommodation available for Islanders who have been affected by homelessness.

Evans House, formerly Roseneath, closed in December 2011, but was subsequently acquired by the Health and Social Services Department (HSSD) and is being run in collaboration with the Shelter Trust. The property has been substantially refurbished at a cost of £250,000 and opened its doors just

before Christmas 2013. It has been renamed Evans House as a tribute to the late Winifred Evans, whose generous bequest provided a significant proportion of the funding for the project. Now the new facility is to be officially opened by General Sir John McColl; the Lieutenant-Governor is a patron of the Shelter Trust and has taken a close interest in the challenges faced by homeless people since his arrival in Jersey. A total of 22 newly refurbished rooms are available at Evans House, which is staffed 24/7 and also includes communal lounge,

A delay in publishing a review into a possible living wage for Jersey will "bury it as an election issue" according to a St Helier politician.

Deputy Geoff Southern introduced a successful proposition in May 2013 calling on the chief minister to review the concept of a living wage. Chief Minister, Senator Ian Gorst, said he needed more time and would publish an interim report at the end of 2014. Deputy Southern said delaying the report until the end of 2014 would "bury it" as an issue for the elections in October.

"It was accepted at the time that it would take longer than January to produce the report but what that has done

is sweep it off the table, so it is not a topic for active debate. It should be an issue we are presenting to prospective members of the States 'are you for or against a living wage'." In the original proposition, approved 35 votes to seven, Deputy Southern asked the chief minister to "investigate the feasibility and desirability of the introduction of a living wage for Jersey". The report is expected to examine the experience of other jurisdictions, the appropriate level it could be set at and the impact on the business sector. "Work on the 2014/15 Household Income Distribution Survey will start in spring 2014 and will be completed by the end of 2015.

Highlands College students attend housekeeping training day at the Somerville Hotel Hospitality students from Highlands College have been behind the scenes at the Somerville Hotel to learn about housekeeping as part of Dolan’s on-going educational outreach programme.

As part of the course curriculum, the Highlands students were required to successfully service and maintain a public area and bedroom, including a bathroom or washroom with a toilet.

Tasks involved stripping and remaking beds and cleaning washrooms and surfaces with the correct materials and health and safety precautions.

The Dolan educational outreach programme was launched in October 2013, initially offering tailored support and advise to students studying at the four state-funded secondary schools in Jersey. Students from Years 10 and 11 at Le Rocquier, Les Quennevais, Grainville and Haute Vallee paired up with each of Dolan’s four properties (three hotels and a restaurant) to receive expert guidance and practical exposure to the daily functions of the hospitality industry.

Following the programme’s initial success, Dolan invited Highlands College to join the programme in 2014, resulting in the provision of further assistance to students studying Travel and Tourism

and Business Management through work placement schemes and training days. Andrew Shrimpton, director of Dolan Hotels, said: ‘I am delighted that Highlands College have opted to join our educational outreach programme this year. The initial feedback that we received from the participating schools was really positive, with many hoping to take further advantage of the partnership in 2014. Practical exposure to the industry in an integral part of the school curriculum and we hope that training days such as this will assist with the students’ academic progress and future career development.’

The addition of Evans House completes the reconfiguration of homelessness services provided by the Shelter Trust.

There is now a range of accommodation for homeless people and socially excluded adults, accessible at any point depending on individual needs. This comprises: the emergency accommodation at Aztec House; a dedicated service for young adults aged 16-25 at Strathmore – another collaboration with HSSD; and provision for mature adults aged over 25 at Midvale Road and Evans House.

Hotel Cristina general manager completes ‘Britain’s toughest endurance event’ The general manager of the Hotel Cristina, Steve Hayes, has recently completed the Spine Race, a 268-mile, nonstop, 7-day winter marathon across the Peak District and Yorkshire Dales in England.

The event is regarded as one of the toughest physical endurance challenges in Britain, with only a third of the 80 competitors finishing the race in 2014. Mr Hayes completed the ultra-marathon in 155 hours and 45 minutes, finishing in 17th place. Mr Hayes was also commended for his bravery and compassion after helping an injured competitor to descend a mountain four miles from the finish line. He carried the runner’s rucksack and called for medical assistance when the person became dangerously hypothermic. This, along with his persistence to finish the race against all odds, led to Mr Hayes receiving the Cognitive Fitness Award 2014 in recognition of his flexibility, resilience, mental toughness, sense of humour and selfmanagement.

The Spine Race encompasses the entire Pennine Way, producing some of the most demanding terrain and severe weather conditions in Northern Europe. The course

spans across the Peak District, Cheviots, Yorkshire Dales and Northumberland National Park – finishing on the Scottish boarders.

During the race, Mr Hayes had to endure extreme fatigue, sleep deprivation, illness and freezing weather conditions as he battled to survive.

He explained: ‘It was incredibly tough out there. The weather was appalling – at one point my eyes had frozen shut, my water bottle froze and my Mars bar had turned to solid ice. The main challenge was sleep deprivation, especially on day two which took around 28 hours of constant walking and running. I hallucinated many times and fell asleep whilst walking.’

There were many other challenges along the course, including severe waterlogging, illness, blistered feet and trench foot. There were a number of difficult mountains to climb, with the highest point reaching 893 metres.

The competitors also had to scale a 60-metre waterfall, the Cauldron Snout on the River Tees. ‘The ground we were covering was extremely muddy and on several occasions I was waist deep in a bog, with one particular section taking over an hour to cover 400

metres. Each day I suffered quite bad trench foot and was constantly fighting a painful left knee that needed regular medical attention at the checkpoints. I also developed a nasty chest infection, which led to me losing my voice on day four. The medics put me on drugs and antibiotics to fight the pain and infection,

allowing me to carry on and complete the race,’ The Spine Race follows a number of other challenges that Mr Hayes has accomplished in recent years. In October 2012, he completed the English Channel Swim Challenge in 17 hours and 47 minutes.

National Accreditation for Jersey’s Autism Services Services which support both children and adults with Autism run by Health and Social Services have been given official accreditation by the National Autistic Society.

HSSD staff who work at Eden House, Aviemore and Adult Day Services have received the accreditation for their work, and this is being officially marked with a presentation of the award from the Society on Monday (24 Feb) at the Grand Hotel.

Robert Pritchett, Director of Accreditation from the National Autistic Society, will be at the event to present the awards. The National Autistic Society is a UK charity which campaigns on behalf of autistic people.

Assumpta Finn, Team Manager and Lead for Autism and Learning Disability at HSSD, said “This accreditation has been achieved by the hard work of all our staff

who work with adults and children who have autism over the past couple of years.”

“We’re delighted that all three areas of service have been awarded accreditation by the National Autistic Society. The aim of accreditation is to achieve a unified standard of excellence both in policy and practice. This award provides evidence that services have achieved excellence in the delivery of services both for children and adults.

Our aim now is to continue to develop services of this standard and maintain the national recognition we have now in place.”

Autism is a lifelong developmental disability that affects how a person communicates with, and relates to, other people. It also affects how they make sense of the world around them.

It is a spectrum condition, which means that, while all people with

autism share certain difficulties, their condition will affect them in different ways. Some people with autism are able to live relatively independent lives but others may have accompanying learning disabilities and need a lifetime of specialist support. People with autism may also experience over or under sensitivity to sounds, touch, tastes, smells, light or colours.

UK guidance would suggest a ratio of 1 in a 100 people have Autism therefore suggesting approximately 1000 people on the spectrum reside in Jersey. Not all people will require the support of services but for those that do then support will be offered in a personalise way unique to that individual and their family and / or carer.

The Kiss of death!

Dry, chapped lips are something we all experience at one time or another. Our lips are sensitive and need to be protected. Elements like the sun, the wind, dry and cold weather conditions can really affect our lips. It’s time to take charge and say goodbye to chapped lips!

During these last few months we have experienced awesome winds and incredible stormy weather carrying salt particles throughout the air. This unpredictable cold and windy weather can wreak havoc on our skin and especially our lips.

And in the summer we can’t relax either – our lips can suffer sun damage and become chapped in hotter weather too. So here are my teams top five tips to keep your lips in their most kissable condition.

Chapped lip tip 1: Serve & Protect!

Our lips have a very thin outer layer of skin and they contain little melanin, which is necessary for protection against the wind and sun’s rays. Always protect your lips by applying a lip product with SPF UVA/UVB protection within all seasons.

Chapped lip tip 2: Stay hydrated!

Our lips lack in both sweat and oil glands making them susceptible to dehydration. My team here have a consistent supply of Herbal Green tea and water with Aloe Vera concentrate of which we drink throughout the day because chapped lips are an indicator that your body is dehydrated and needs water.

Drink, Drink, Drink!

Chapped lip tip 3: No licking!

We tend to lick our lips as they begin to dry out. And while this may provide temporary relief, the reality is it can worsen the condition. As our saliva quickly evaporates, our lips are left even drier than before.

It’s a vicious cycle that we have to break. Try to resist the temptation and keep reapplying your lip product instead of licking your lips throughout the day.

Chapped lip tip 4: Take your vitamins!

Believe it or not, vitamin deficiencies can affect our entire body both inside and out. And, these deficiencies can lead to chapped lips. Be sure to eat a varied, healthy diet and consider taking a daily

multivitamin that includes vitamins B, C and E to nurture your lips from the inside out.

Chapped lip tip 5: Eat healthy A healthy diet that includes essential fatty acids is also important when it comes to our lips. Not sure how your office looks after a team night out but after our monthly team review I can barely recognize myself never mind my team. Now, of course, this usually happens after a very late night out but whatever the reason, no one wants to wake up with unsightly bags under their eyes. They can make us look tired, stressed and, dare I say it…

OLD! The team at Channel Islands Wellness has devised four simple tips to help fight against under-eye puffiness, however the team have asked me to stress that your skincare nighttime routine is essential, every night – Try not to drink fluids at least 2 to 3 hours before bedtime. It’s fluid retention that tends to be the most common factor with under-eye puffiness. The skin around our eyes is very thin and fragile, so when fluid starts

to build, this area can become puffy and droopy.

- A flat pillow is not our friend! Some particular members of our team have this night time mantra , “Make sure my pillow is fluffy so I won’t wake up puffy”.

Flat pillows allow for fluid retention to build under our eyes. By slightly elevating our heads with a fuller pillow, we can help prevent the fluid buildup that leads to noticeable eye bags.

- Try to limit your alcohol and salt intake. They are both key contributors to eye bags and puffiness because they can lead to dehydration. Drink water throughout the evening and try not to wait until you go to bed and neck 3 pints after a night out!

- Plain old tiredness is also a major culprit. We are all guilty of sitting in front of our computers and televisions for far too long. We must give our eyes, and ourselves, a rest too. Remember, it’s called “Beauty Sleep” for a reason so let’s all get plenty of it and help banish those eye bags forever.

There are many contributors to under-

eye bags including allergies, heredity, hormonal changes and even our diet.

My personal tip is probably the most practical of all: if you don’t want any-

one to notice your under-eye puffiness, invest in a pair of sunglasses. You will look fabulous and nobody will know you were out dancing all night long!

Snacking – Is this the secret to successful Weightloss!

Snacking – good or bad? Find out once and for all! A healthy snacking habit can help you manage your weight and balance your diet.

There seems to be a big divide between those who think snacking is a good thing and those who think snacking is bad … which baffles me a little bit. I’ve always been solidly in the pro-snacking camp – for reasons I’ll get to in a minute – and I just assumed that most other people felt the same way about healthy snacking.

However the majority of people seem almost offended if I suggest that they snack (“Me, snack? Never!). For a long time, I couldn’t make sense of this, and then one day, it struck me. To some, snacking means “eating when you’re not hungry” – which, of course, is “bad”.

To others, the question, “do you eat snacks?” is heard as, “do you eat snack foods?” which may explain why they get defensive – it sounds as if I’m accusing them of loading up on unhealthy snack foods like crisps, chocolate and sweets.

So here’s my take on snacking: when it’s done right, snacking can be a healthy habit that may help you manage your weight and balance your diet.

Five Reasons Why Snacking Can Be a Healthy Habit 1. Smart snacking may prevent you from overeating at meal time. Most of us get hungry about every 3-4 hours. So, if there’s a long stretch between meals, you’re likely to get hungry – which is why a snack would be appropriate. But if you resist the urge to snack and try to “tough it out”, there’s a good chance you’ll just

make up for it by overeating at your next meal.

2. Smart snacking can help you reduce your overall calorie intake for the day.

Sometimes I have a hard time convincing people that healthy snacking can help them control their total calorie intake for the day – they figure that they’re just going to add snacks (and their calories) right on top of everything they’re already eating. But if a well-planned, healthy snack helps you eat less at mealtimes, then you’ll cut your daily calories overall.

3. Smart snacking can help you to work more healthy foods into your day. This is usually my strongest argument for those who resist snacking (or who skip meals altogether). The more often you eat, the easier it will be to work in your daily servings of healthy foods like vegetables, fruits, and calcium-rich dairy products.

4. Snacks can help you maintain your physical and mental energy. When you eat regular meals and snacks, it can help keep your blood sugar more stable throughout the day – a good defense against between-meal dips in blood sugar that can sap your mental and physical energy.

5. A substantial afternoon snack can help control portions at dinner – which tends to be the largest meal of the day.

Lots of people manage to control their eating pretty well during the day, but really cut loose at night and eat a huge dinner. For those folks, a larger afternoon snack – almost a small “second lunch” – makes it much easier to cut back at the

evening meal.

Are we designed to snack?

Spend some time around kids – or your household pets – and you’ll see that frequent grazing is the instinctual way to eat over the course of the day. We certainly evolved as frequent foragers, not meal eaters, and frequent snacking isn’t

necessarily a bad thing – if the foods you choose are appropriate, and if you are truly hungry, it can be a healthy habit.

If after-dinner snacking is a problem for you, try brushing your teeth after dinner.

It works as a great signal to stop eating aswell as giving you minty beautiful breath!

Which Milk is better for YOU? If you’ve spent any time staring into the dairy case lately, there are enough milk choices to make your head spin. No longer is the decision simply whether to buy regular, reduced fat, low fat or skim – we’ve got goat’s milk, and milks made from soybeans, almonds, rice, oats and even hemp. But making nutritional comparisons among all these choices is no easy task.

Cow’s milk and goat’s milk are great protein sources, but some people can’t tolerate their natural lactose. Almond milk is lowest in calories, but it contains very little protein – and some brands can have a fair amount of salt. Hemp milk, although it provides some healthy omega-3 fatty acids, doesn’t offer much protein, either. Neither do rice or oat milk, but at least they’re naturally mild in flavor – so some might prefer them over soy milk which can be a tad bitter. So how do you choose?

Get a boost of calcium and protein, with low fat or nonfat cow’s milk or low fat goat’s milk – or soya milk if you’re looking for a non-dairy alternative. The cow or goat milk will give you somewhere in the range of 7-10 grams of protein per cup, along with about a third of your daily calcium needs – all for 90-120 calories. The same for the soya milks, which are also naturally cholesterol-free, and don’t contain lactose (although lactose-free cow’s milk is fairly widely available, too).

Some people have trouble digesting some of soy’s natural carbohydrates – excess gas is not an uncommon complaint among soya milk drinkers. And,

since plain soya milk may be an acquired taste, keep in mind that the flavored ones have added sugar – and more calories.

Almond milk, like soy, is plant-based, so it’s naturally cholesterol-free. It’s also lactose-free, and has the fewest calories – averaging about 60 per cup. But almond milk contains only a pinch of groundnuts – almonds are usually listed as an ingredient after water and sweeteners (although, to be fair, most soya milks list water and sweeteners first, too). Almond milk doesn’t offer much protein –only 1 gram per cup, but most are calcium-fortified, so this might be a good choice if you simply want something with very few calories to wet your whistle.

Like almond milk, the plusses of rice, oat and hemp milks are more about what they don’t contain – no lactose, no saturated fat, no cholesterol. Of the three, rice has the least protein (1 gram per cup, vs. about 4 for oat or hemp) and rice and oat milks have naturally mild, sweet flavors so they usually have less sugar. All are calcium-fortified, too, often to levels that come close to matching what’s found in cow’s milk. But they’ll cost you somewhere between 100 to 120 calories per cup.

Allergies to rice and hemp are rare – something for the allergy-prone to keep in mind. They’re also gluten-free – as are all milk and milk alternatives, with the exception of oat milk.

To summarise, all milk carry’s its benefits however it all really depends on what you are looking to achieve! For me and my team Soya wins the race!

TTS apprentices build vehicle and give it to Highlands College The first batch of Transport and Technical Services (TTS) apprentices have used their skills to rebuild a vehicle which is now being given to Highlands College.

The eight TTS apprentices took a vehicle which was unroadworthy after an accident and stripped it, restored the engine, and built a rolling frame.

TTS are now donating it to Highlands College so that other apprentices and students in full time education can use it to learn and apply new skills.

The apprentices, from TTS' mechanical, electrical and fleet management sections, are the first group to be trained in-house by fully-qualified TTS technicians. Philip Dodd, Mechanical Engineering Manager for TTS, said “We have a lot of highly skilled staff at TTS and I am really pleased we have been able to develop this training along with the technicians that allows our staff to pass

on their knowledge and which will provide long term benefit for the Island skill base.”

TTS decided to provide training modules which would give the apprentices competency in a broader range of skills than they would have received elsewhere.

Since the apprenticeships started last September just over half of the 15 training modules have been delivered, covering areas including bearings, pumps, shaft alignment and boiler maintenance.

The modules run for between one and three weeks, with apprentices graded on their attitude and skill, and expected to keep a log book and portfolio of work as evidence of the skills learnt.

After their four years of training, apprentices who do not go on to full time employment with TTS will have an extensive record of experience to showcase to potential employees.

Charities warn of Jersey food bank rise Charities have warned of a rise in people using food banks and relying on food parcels in Jersey.

The Grace Trust said almost 80 households each month relied on food provided by the charity. It added that since 2008 the number of people needing a regular bag of food has doubled.

Lt Melanie Scoulding, from the Salvation Army, said: "We see people who haven't eaten for a couple of days". The charity also gives emergency supplies to

people in need and believes more people are relying on food banks.

Gerry Padden, from the Grace Trust, said: "We're quite a wealthy island and we have people who are struggling to make ends meet. "Many people come to us with a face a mile long and we try and send them back out in a better frame of mind." The charity helps people who have been referred by parish halls, citizens advice bureaux, social services and churches.

Jersey's Elizabeth Harbour bridge extension delayed by weather Repairs to the Elizabeth Harbour extension bridge have been delayed due to bad weather.

The linkspan - a bridge used to move cars on and off ferries - was ordered from Rotterdam, in Holland, but has not yet left the dock.

The £5.5m project aims to improve access for boats and allow more ferries to berth on the island. The Ports of Jersey said it hopes for a weather window soon so the linkspan can be delivered.

It said the harbour's current linkspan, built in the 1970s was "beyond economical repair and of little benefit to existing harbour operations".

Repairs were due to be completed by Spring 2014, but there is now no clear date for when it is likely to be finished.

The Ports of Jersey said; "When the bridge arrives, there will be a period for installation, testing and commissioning before it can enter service."

T & G continue expansion into Plumbing firm fined £9000 for breachGuernsey T & G has strengthened its presence across the Channel Islands by merging its Guernsey operation with The Don Babbé Practice, a longstanding Sarnian engineering consultancy.

The practice has merged with McCathie Associates Limited, a T & G Group company, to form Babbé McCathie and will operate from McCathie’s current premises in St Peter Port.

The two Guernsey firms, who were both founded in 1990, will continue trade as normal but will now offer clients an extended range of services, including project management, consultancy and guidance, civil and structural design and advanced engineering solutions.

Ian Bashforth, the chairman of the T & G Group, said the merger would enable them to build on their existing presence in Guernsey and, with Babbé McCathie’s enhanced resources and skills capacity, allow them to take on bigger and more complex projects.

“T & G is already the largest single discipline engineering consultancy in the Channel Islands and the addition of The Don Babbé Practice will not only give us greater exposure to the Guernsey market, but add to the

continued development of T & G as a pan-island business.”

The T & G Group now comprises a 20-strong team across the two islands, including five Chartered Engineers, and offers extensive knowledge and expertise in all aspects of structural and engineering consultancy and building surveying across a multitude of different sectors.

“Combined, the experience, skills and resources of the T & G Group can deal with pretty much any civil and structural design challenge in Jersey and Guernsey while still remaining at a manageable size for its constituent markets,” said Mr Bashforth.

principal of the Don Babbé Practice, said the merger was a natural progression for both Guernsey companies, especially as they had the same outlook and approach to doing business as well as hard won reputations for attention to detail and personal service.

“Being part of the T & G Group will give us a good platform for continued success and growth and means we can offer an even higher level of structural engineering expertise as well as unrivalled local knowledge, something that is especially important in light of increasing demands for trusted and proven professional advice,” he added.

The prosecution of a local plumbing firm has highlighted the need for heating boiler installations to meet important health and safety standards set out within the Jersey building-bye laws.

Plumbing firm Kanetech Ltd was fined a total of £9000 in the Magistrate’s Court on 18 February 2014, for breaching building bye-law requirements relating to the installation of domestic heating boilers. Kanetech Ltd installed 16 boilers without building permission.

Householders are being reminded that their safety is being put at risk if oil or gas fired central heating boilers are not properly installed. To safeguard against this, householders should request a certificate of compliance is provided at the completion of the work that confirms the installation meets the safety standards set by the building bye-laws. A certificate can be obtained from the Department of the Environment in cases where a building application has been submitted, or from the installer’s registration body, where the work has been undertaken by a registered competent person. Director of Building Control at the Department of the Environment, Mo Roscouet, said: “We are reminding any person who is having an oil or gas boiler fitted of the importance of receiving a certificate of compliance. An incorrectly installed boiler can result in the release of poisonous carbon monoxide gas and increased fire safety risks.”

Anyone who has recently had an oil storage tank or new oil- or gas-fired boiler installed in their home and has not received a certificate of compliance, or who would like further advice should, contact the building control team on 448407.

Tel: 869221 | 07797 755108 New Jersey Airport cargo centre approved Plans for a new cargo centre at Jersey Airport have been approved.

The building is expected to be completed by January 2015.

The existing cargo building will then be demolished.

The States of Jersey is trying to find a contractor to build the single-storey centre and a two-storey building where the airport's engineering team is expected to be based.

The States said the cost of the construction could not be

confirmed until a contractor had been found.

Funding is expected to come from the Ports of Jersey Trading Fund and not directly from taxpayers.

The trading fund is money made from commercial activities such as rentals, passenger charges and advertising and is used to pay for dayto-day running and for major projects. The plans were approved by Jersey's planning applications panel.

Black Spots and Lichens Lichens are strange things.

They are symbionts, which means they are two different organisms living in sin, if you will. There is a bit that does the photosynthesis business which is usually some form of algae or bacteria, and this gets into a mutually beneficial relationship with a fungus, which functions as an anchor as well as acquiring minerals from whatever it is the lichen is growing on. The fungus sends little fungussy rootlets, known as hyphae, down into the substrate, namely the paving or walling, and such is the tenacity of these things that it’s damned near impossible to shift them. They form a ‘crustose’ growth, which means they are flat and stick like the proverbial to a blanket.

As hundreds, if not thousands of visitors to this site have commented, brushing, scrubbing, and even powerwashing can have little effect on the disfiguring little spots, and the longer they are left unchallenged, the bigger they get.

In theory, all paving and walling materials are susceptible, but some are more susceptible

than others. The exponential growth in the use of imported stone for paving in recent years has provided a wonderful new opportunity for lichen.

Although they can and do set up residence on concrete paving, it wouldn’t naturally be their first choice. What they like is a nice, porous, easily penetrated sedimentary stone, which is what we’ve been providing for them in abundance with the mass installation of imported sandstone paving.

The limestones imported from the same part of the world are less affected, but not immune, and the various granites and basalts from wherever are much more resistant, due to their crystalline rather than granular structure. As mentioned, concrete products are liable to colonisation by these airborne squatters, but the type of con-

crete will determine just how badly affected is any particular paving. Wet-cast products with a relatively low cement content are noticeably more prone to lichens than cement-rich pressed pavers.

2013 – Energising year for hundreds of Islanders More than 300 Island homes benefited from a States initiative to improve energy efficiency in 2013.

The Energy Efficiency Service runs a programme called the Home Energy Scheme. It helps people on reduced incomes become more energy efficient by funding home improvements at no cost to the applicant.

In 2013, the Home Energy Service achieved the following: Energy efficiency improvements carried out on 326 properties.

8548m2 of loft insulation installed – the equivalent of covering 32 tennis courts.

Installation of cavity wall insulation in

67 homes. The average household saves around £210 per year by having cavity wall insulation installed, with payback usually within five years.

Installation of 552m of draught proofing – more than four times the height of the London Eye. Replacement of 61 boilers by high efficiency A-rated condensing boilers.

The 100% grant provided by the Department of the Environment results in all works being completed at no cost to the applicant.

The Minister for Planning and Environment, Deputy Rob Duhamel, said “The Energy Efficiency Programme is part of

Plans to move the runway at Jersey airport could cost '£80 million' Jersey's economic minister has said that moving the airport's runway could cost "in excess of £80m".

The airport terminal, built in 1937, was declared Grade II listed in January - despite the proximity of the runway being a serious hazard.

Planning Minister Deputy Rob Duhamel decided not to demolish the terminal but has suggested the runway be moved towards St Peter's Village. Senator Alan Maclean said he was "disap-

pointed" by the decision.

John Refault, Connetable St Peter, said that the ports team failed to take into account "the need to demolish many of the existing properties on the south east of the approach line on St Peters main road". This included the Daisy Farm complex, the new residential properties and doctors surgery at La Retraite, Rue St Clement, he said. The cost and impact of the move is still being considered by the ports team.

Electric Vehicles At nine miles by five and with speed restrictions of 40mph, Jersey is the perfect environment for electric vehicles (EVs) and they are the perfect way to help protect that environment.

Since 2011, the number of makes and models of EVs available in Jersey has steadily increased for both private and business users and Jersey Electricity has been at the forefront of promoting and facilitating their use. Our own EV ‘stable’ includes the Mercedes Smart, Peugeot iOn, Nissan Leaf and Renault Kangoo ZE. We view EVs as the next big step to further reducing Jersey’s overall carbon emissions, we are working with the States to install a public charging infrastructure to enable motorists to park and charge around the Island.

Types of EVs EVs offer an environmentally friendly alternative to traditional fossil fuel motoring whatever your needs. Incorporated into a company fleet for business use, EVs will also enhance a company’s green credentials. Battery Electric Vehicle Battery electric vehicles are powered purely by electricity. Unlike conventional car batteries, which start the engine and run items such as the radio or heater, the battery pack in an all-electric vehicle runs everything. Crucially, it runs the controller which, in turn, powers the electric motor that replaces a petrol or diesel engine. EV battery packs need to be powerful and long-lasting to provide an adequate range between re-charging.

Regenerative braking ‘tops up’ the battery as you drive by capturing kinetic energy when the brakes are applied.

This can increase range by up to 20%. An average family saloon, with a range of around

100 miles, would typically have a 24kWh battery pack and be charged via a standard 13Amp domestic socket overnight on off-peak electricity. A full charge can be achieved in as little as 30 minutes through a higher power fast charger.

Hybrid Electric Vehicle The hybrid electric vehicle is dual fuel. It is powered by a combination of electric motor and standard internal combustion engine, providing increased fuel efficiency particularly in stopstart city driving. The electric motor boosts the car’s ability to start and accelerate, and powers the car at low speeds over short distances when the internal combustion engine is least efficient. The engine kicks in at higher speeds.

The system also prevents wasting fuel idling by automatically shutting down the engine when the car stops.

The battery is recharged by both the engine and regenerative braking which captures kinetic energy when the brakes are applied.

Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle The plug-in hybrid electric vehicle, like the hybrid electric vehicle, is dual fuel, powered by both the electric motor and internal combustion engine to increase fuel efficiency.

The battery pack can also be charged by the engine and regenerative braking. The difference is the battery pack is larger, increasing the share of electricity used as fuel to power the car and it can also be plugged into the electric grid for charging at home overnight.

ExtendedRange Electric Vehicle An extendedrange electric vehicle uses an internal combustion engine to power an electric generator that charges the battery system. Unlike the dualfuel system hybrid and plug-in hybrids, the electric motor is the only system to directly power the car and turn the wheels. The internal combustion engine only charges the battery system.

Charging your EV Though most Electric Vehicles can be charged on a standard 13Amp home socket, we recommend having a weather proof external charging point fitted on a dedicated circuit.

This is simple to do and chargers come in a variety of styles to suit homes and businesses, small and large. You can have one fitted free of charge as a member of Jersey Electricity’s EV owners’ Evolve Club. Membership can also offer access to public charging points that we are currently installing in five multi-storey Town car parks, beginning with Sand Street, and our own car park at The Powerhouse. These charge points are fitted with dual sockets for both 16Amp and faster 32Amp charging. The chargers automatically recognise how much charge your vehicle can take.

How far can I travel on one charge?

EVs such as the Nissan Leaf, Peugeot iOn, Renault’s ZOE and Mercedes Smart ed, now appearing in Jersey, typically provide a range of around 90 - 125 miles. However, range will be affected by driving style, speed, heating temperature and air-conditioning use, all of which can deplete the battery more quickly. Understanding the factors will enable you to optimise

range and all EVs are equipped with technology to help you do this. Regenerative braking ‘tops up’ the battery when the brakes are applied. This is similar to the KERS (Kinetic Energy Recovery System) in Formula One and can increase vehicle range by as much as 20%.

How much electricity do EVs use and what does it cost?

Jersey Electricity recommends that all EV owners switch to our Economy 7 Tariff. This provides seven hours of discounted electricity during the offpeak nigh time period, usually between midnight and 7am, so charging your EV overnight makes electric driving very economical.

How long will a battery last?

Nissan expects the Leaf to have 70 to 80% capacity left after ten years.

But how you recharge the pack will affect its life. Frequent and regular fast charging, which enables an 80% charge in 30 minutes, will reduce its overall capacity to 70% over 10 years.

Battery packs with short, medium or long range, priced accordingly, may become the norm. Renault have already decided to lease the battery packs on this basis, dramatically reducing the price of the cars which no longer includes the battery cost. Other manufacturers are likely to follow suit.

New technology to JTC Group announce further boost inward in- strategic alliances with firms in Europe vestment ‘Smart’ devices that constantly monitor driving habits are being launched by an international partnership involving JT. The devices combine GPS tracking, ‘black box’-style data recording about acceleration and cornering, and a SIM card to communicate through the mobile phone network.

They mean that insurance companies will be able to track exactly where, when and how a car is being driven, leading to a significant reduction in insurance premiums, and potentially reduce the number of accidents.

JT’s involvement comes from its extensive range of roaming partners around the world.

Because the company is independent, it can sign deals giving it a network of agreements with all the major carriers.

Paul Bullock, Head of M2M at JT, said that the service was a good example of how JT was doing more and mo e business overseas, and so bringing investment back to the Island.

He said: ‘It has been estimated that over the next five years, 70% of cars in the UK could have these devices installed.

‘We hope that we can play a big part in that through our network of roaming agreements, and all of this will be managed in the Channel Islands, bringing money back to JT, which of course is ultimately owned by the Jersey taxpayer.

‘Most importantly, this technology could have significant safety implications, not just for traffic management, and “black box technology” for use in court, but also because parents could get reports on how their children are driving. The collective data will also be of enormous use to car manufacturers in terms of monitoring car performance and flagging up issues that can be alerted directly to the owners.’

The technology could change the way that people in Britain pay for insurance by offering discounts to drivers who eliminate risky behaviour from their driving. For instance, by restricting driving late at night or at the weekend when a disproportionate number of ac-

cidents happen, people could pay far less for their premiums.

It could even lead to insurance being charged on a by-the-mile or by-the-hour basis.

Additionally the same technology could also be used to send messages to parents when their children break the speed limit whilst driving, could be used in court to resolve disputes about how an accident happened, or ultimately to send them diagnostic reports about when engine parts need servicing or replacing.

JT and Progressive Platforms are offering the Smart systems as a Managed Service to allow insurance companies to offer ‘usage-based insurance’ that will in-turn allow people to pick and choose when and how they drive, and to offer discounts accordingly.

That technology will be particularly of interest in the UK where young drivers have to pay premiums of anything up to £4,000 for insurance. John Diamond, MD of the Wholesale Business Unit at JT, commented: “We were very proud to unveil our partnership with Progressive Platforms at the at the M2M Telematics for UsageBased Insurance conference in London. Launching this new service is another demonstration of our commitment to become the partner of choice for global telecoms innovation”.

Progressive Platorms managing director, Mark Fensome, said that the service was a practical application of M2M technology.

‘By combining our software which analyses the data generated through these devices and integrates with insurance providers’ systems, and JT’s network of roaming agreements, we think we have a perfect match,’ he said.

‘More and more, M2M technology, ‘Big Data and the “Internet of Things” is going to be a part of our everyday lives, and this is a great example of how innovation can improve public safety and save people money.’

Ravenscroft appoints new Chief Executive in Jersey

Ravenscroft Stockbroking and Investment Management, the Channel Islands-based investment services group, has appointed Haydn Taylor Chief Executive Officer of its Jersey operation.

Haydn has more than 30 years’ stockbroking and banking experience in the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man. Haydn was previously at Standard Bank, where he was Managing Director of the Stockbroking and Asset Management business as well as having responsibility for the Private and Corporate Banking businesses. Prior to joining Standard Bank, Haydn began his career with Trevor Matthews & Carey Stockbrokers, later Hoare Govett Channel Islands, following which he was a founder of Brown Shipley Stockbroking which became part of the Standard Bank Group in 1992. He is a Fellow of the Chartered Securities Institute.

Prior to his move to State Street, Paul Mundy had been in a senior management role in risk management at the Royal Bank of Scotland International (RBS International) in Jersey for more than 13 years, most recently as Di-

rector of Risk, Service and Operations in Corporate Banking, a post he held since 2007.

He began his finance career in 1982 with Chase Manhattan Bank and he has wide ranging institutional banking experience in global custody services, operations and securities lending.

Skipton International strengthens its position as a leading Channel Islands’ bank Skipton International has consolidated its position as the lender of choice in the Channel Islands in 2013, growing its mortgage business by 10% on the previous year and further bolstering its deposit taking activities.

Profit before tax increased to £8.75 million, from £5.78 million in 2012 reflecting the bank’s increased trade and prudent business model.

Managing Director of Skipton International, Jim Coupe said: ‘The 10% increase in mortgage lending goes hand in hand with our very low level of mortgage arrears which demonstrates the effectiveness of our underwriting and our understanding of the local market.

‘Our low risk appetite when it comes to where depositor funds are invested has also allowed us to grow the business in a provident manner maintaining substantial liquidity and capital buffers that exceeds both local regulatory and Basel III requirements. I believe that our success has come from listening to our customers and understanding the Channel Island communities in which we live and operate, and 2014 looks set to be another record year for us.’

During 2013 Skipton International was named ‘Best Offshore Account Provider’ in the Moneyfacts Awards. It was also Guernsey’s leading supplier for new

mortgages for the 4th year running. In Jersey Skipton International was the only mortgage lender to support the Deposit Loan Scheme set up by the States to enable islanders without a large deposit to purchase their first home, and its mortgage business in Jersey is set to outgrow Guernsey’s during 2014.

The Bank also launched a new UK mortgage product for islanders who want to invest in UK buy-to-let properties during 2013, and maintained its Next Generation Mortgage which help buyers get on the property ladder with the support of parents and family members.

During 2013, the bank invested in technology to improve its customer service, launching a new eMortgages platform to improve the turn round time of mortgage applications received through the bank’s network of intermediaries.

Skipton International also continued its commitment to investing in the community. Its Skipton Open Studios sponsorship in Jersey saw a trebling of visitors in 2013, whilst the Skipton Swimarathon in Guernsey had over 1,500 swimmers taking part in the charity fundraiser.

2013 was the second year that Skipton International was a stand alone bank, maintaining all its own assets separately to its parent, Skipton Building Society in the UK.
