SINBAD – The Coast Guard’s Most Famous Mascot from New Jersey USCG (Ret.), K9C (Chief Petty Officer, Dog) during a long career at sea. As one author noted at the time: “He's been on report several times and he's raised hell in a number of ports, even embarrassed the United States Government by creating disturbances in foreign zones. Perhaps that's why Coast Guardsmen love Sinbad, he's as bad as the worst and as good as the best of us." Regardless of the fact that he liked to blow

Sinbad and some of his Campbell shipmates in the North Atlantic, 1943.

The crew of the Coast Guard cutter Campbell adopted a mixed-breed puppy in 1938. Little did they know that their canine companion would become a world famous Coast Guard veteran. He was, literally, a member of the crew, complete with all his official uniforms and his own bunk. He sailed on board the combat-tested cutter through World War II and

He served faithfully on board Campbell for eleven years, garnering more sea time than most of his contemporaries, before finally retiring to the Barnegat Light Station. He passed away 30 December 1951 and was laid to rest beneath the station's flagstaff.

Until recently he had the honor and distinction of being the only Coast Guardsman to be the subject of a biography. Although he served honorably, he did run into a bit of trouble on occasion, as any sailor might

Dog-Safe Driving Tips to make traveling by automobile with your pet a more enjoyable experience for everyone! Sensible drivers buckle in themselves and their children before starting the motor. But what about their dog's safety? Many drivers simply command their pets to jump into the backseat, the pickup's cargo bed or even onto their laps. Lap dogs they should never be. In fact, according to safety experts, dogs shouldn't be anywhere near our laps when we're driving. But many drivers ignore the safety risks and allow their dogs to roam freely in cars.

The exact number of accidents caused each year by such dogs is unknown, but Paws to Click, which seeks to educate drivers about riding with unrestrained dogs, puts the number at about 30,000 accidents annually. In addition, the danger posed to humans by an unrestrained pet can be big even if the pet isn't. According to a AAA study, a 10-pound dog would strike at 50 times its weight in a crash at 50 mph.

That can be a big mistake, says Dr. Kimberly May, of the American Veterinary Medical Association in Schaumburg, Illinois. "Even a lowspeed crash can cause injury to unrestrained dogs," she says. "Depending on what structures they hit, dogs can suffer broken ribs, broken legs or eye injuries. They can hit the windshield or be thrown outside of the car. In a crash, the dog could be suffocated or crushed by a deployed airbag or thrown into the windshield." When You're Behind the Wheel, Your Pet Should Be Secured The best restraint for dogs is a good harness and a seatbelt. A properly secured crate is a close second — but crates can have drawbacks, too. "If the crate is too big for a dog, the dog can still be hurt slamming against the sides of the crate, even in a low-speed crash," she says. Dangerous for Drivers Of course, injuries to dogs aren't the only reason to properly restrain four-legged automobile passengers. They can put humans at risk, too. In an August 2010 survey by AAA, nearly a third of the dog-owning drivers admitted they'd been distracted by their dogs and 21 percent allowed their dogs to sit in their lap. Five percent played with their pets as they drove.

Outside Dangers And don't even think about letting dogs ride with their heads out the window, even if they're restrained. Dogs with their heads hanging out of the window are at risk of injury to their eyes, nose, ears, mouth and face from airborne debris. As dangerous as riding unrestrained inside a vehicle can be, doing so in the bed of a pickup can be even worse because animals can jump or be thrown at high speed and are at risk of severe injury, including critical multiple fractures and abrasions. movement. Some of the types of neurological problems that can occur are herniated disc, FCE (fibrocartilagenous embolism), stroke, vestibular disease, tumors, degenerative conditions, or infection of the brain or spinal cord.

Sudden paralysis or ataxic gait is a frightening site, especially if this happens without warning. Limping or leg weakness of unknown origin is also concerning. There are many different causes of lameness or abnormal gait. One cause is neurological issues.

Rehabilitation will help restore muscle function and return your pet to normal activity. Acupuncture can also help the nerves to communicate with the spinal cord and enhance or speed recovery.

Pain from nerve injury can be severe. This may cause your pet to be self-protective or to limit

What is Stereotactic Radiation Therapy (SRT)? When Madison, an eight year-old English Bulldog, started snoring in her sleep, it became apparent it wasn’t the sound of heavy slumber. Following trips to the veterinarian, and medicine for suspected rhinitis, Madison was referred to the Veterinary MRI + Radiotherapy Center in Clifton, NJ, for a CT scan. The Veterinary Center provides technologically advanced diagnostic imaging and radiation therapy (RT). It’s like a regular outpatient hospital for patients with four legs. The scan and biopsy confirmed Madison’s “snores” were the result of a nasal carcinoma, a cancerous nose lesion impeding her breathing. This type of tumor is typically treated over several weeks with 18-21 radiation treatments.

Madison had a better option: Stereotactic Radiation Therapy (SRT). No surgery, no 18-21 doses of radiation and no follow-up chemo. This state-of-the-art treatment was available right at the Veterinary MRI + Radiotherapy Center of NJ. The Center is one of only six in North America with a machine that not only offers traditional photon and electron RT, but also SRT. This is the same technology used for human cancers at the Mayo Clinic and Massachusetts General. SRT is exceptionally precise/accurate, causing minimal side effects. Planning and treatments can be completed within one week. With only three treatments, Madison’s “snores” were gone. The only remnant of her cancer is a light pink area on her muzzle from the radiation beam. We know the importance of treating your pets with love and the best technology available. For more information please call 973-772-9902 or visit our website www.vetmrirt.com.

Dog Parks

Brush Up on Your Dog Park Etiquette Dog Parks are a great way to let your canine pal socialize with other dogs and get some much needed exercise... it’s like a canine version of ‘happy hour’! Here a few tips to make the visit a safe and happy experience for both you and your canine friend! • Always observe the rules posted at the park. • It’s a good idea to visit a few without ‘Spot’ to select one that is not too large or busy.

is a primary reason dog parks get complaints, so pay attention to the ’poop’. • Make sure your dog is current on his/her shots and has a valid license. • Toys are best left behind, as not all dogs ‘share’ well. If you absolutely must bring a toy, bring a tennis ball you can afford to lose - and be prepared to do just that.

• Never leave your dog unattended.

• Don’t allow your dog to ‘hump’ or dominate other dogs or people.

• Don’t smoke or eat while at the dog park. Cigarette butts and food wrappers are tempting treats to dogs.

• Spayed/neutered animals are recommended–do not bring females in heat if not spayed.

• Always clean up after your dog. Most parks have waste bags or scoopers available. This

• If your dog becomes unruly or plays rough, leash him and leave immediately.

The Increasing Popularity of a Raw Food Diet In recent years, it has become more accepted to feed pets a raw diet. The idea behind a raw diet is to feed a natural, minimally processed, grainfree, and properly balanced diet. Commercial dry pet foods are some of the most highly processed foods on the market using inferior ingredients and high-temperature sanitization. The sanitization process kills vital enzymes that aid in digestion and helps with immune system health, energy conversion, vitamin absorption, toxin removal and other key body processes. Dogs and Cats in the wild have a typical diet of around 80% protein and fat- today’s dry foods contain up to 80% carbohydrates. Raw foods are naturally loaded with vitamins, minerals, enzymes, and anti-oxidants that are more readily absorbed in the body.

mercial raw pet foods have shown to be safer due to the careful inspection of ingredients. There have been many reports of improved health when chronically ill pets were switched to a raw diet. Generally, pet owners that feed raw will see improvements in skin, teeth, allergies, and energy levels. In addition, pets on raw food diets tend to be closer to ideal weight, show improvement in digestion and stool quality, and show a general overall health improvement. The introduction of a raw diet helps to promote longer, healthier lives for our pets by feeding them the way nature intended them to be fed.

The biggest concern with feeding raw foods is the belief that they can be unsafe. In fact, com-

Sammy Strong!

Sammy's remarkable recovery has captured our hearts. Sammy now 15, has a loving forever home with his beautiful fur brothers, a cat, and a dad who loves him. His recovery has been remarkable though he is deaf from years of untreated ear infections. Thousands of people from all over the world have been watching Sammy's progress and have been supporting him through prayer, donations and encouraging messages of love. New Jersey is one of 16 states left in the US that

considers animal abuse to be a misdemeanor. All other states consider it to be a felony. Many people are waiting to see what kind of punishment is handed down to Sammy's owners upon their Court Hearings. Photo Courtesy of © Red Bank Veterinary Hospital

Sammy is the abused cocker spaniel that was brought in by his owner in a garbage bag, severely abused, neglected and near death! His owners claimed to have found him on the side of the road in a garbage bag, and are now facing multiple charges of animal cruelty. Sammy's abusers have had two hearings with a new hearing scheduled for August and, if there is no resolution, a trial scheduled for September.

The number of American households that now include pets continues to climb with surveys estimating that between half and three-quarters of renters either have or want pets. Combating Roverpopulation There are more than 450 NJ-based groups dedicated to rescuing and sheltering pets. But even after all of that collective effort, approximately 100 perfectly adoptable pets are put down every day in NJ! I know. I was consumed with “rescuing” for almost 3 years. Then I quit - to focus on the other end of the problem . . . the source of pet overpopulation. Harnesslife.org was born. Here’s what we do to combat “roverpopulation”:

• PROVIDE INFORMATION: Building databases, publishing newsletters and blogging about new developments to help pet owners and rescuers find resources quickly. • SUPPORT: Raising funds and awarding Spay & Neuter Grants to those smaller groups that work hard to save animal lives, but may be struggling in this economy. • INCREASE EXPOSURE: Sharing news to help promote organizations and programs that provide Spay & Neuter and other solutions to combat pet overpopulation. Our approach at times may be humorous, but our message is serious. Visit www.harnesslife.org. Become part of the solution to combat roverpopulation! Harnesslife.org is a 501(c)3 organization entirely powered by an amazing group of volunteers. We all work tirelessly towards reducing pet overpopulation at its source. Pilots N Paws Pilots N Paws was founded in 2008 by animallover Debi Boies and pilot Jon Wehrenberg. The idea first took flight when Jon agreed to help Debi by flying a rescued Doberman from Florida to South Carolina, to save the dog’s life. The trip was a success and the two brainstormed on how to rescue other animals.

website, www.pilotsnpaws.org was launched, to provide a location where private pilots willing to provide free transport, and people and organizations who rescue, shelter or foster animals, could connect to save lives. Today the organization has 3,168 pilot volunteers and 10,551 volunteers.

Spay/Neuter campaigns in parts of the country Each year, the volunteers of Pilots N Paws save thousands of lives. Those lives come in the form of any animal that can be transported using a plane. Dogs, cats, pigs, reptiles and rabbits are just a few who have taken one of our flights. Pet overpopulation is a disturbing problem in the United States. More than 4 million no-longer-wanted pets are euthanized each year. While spay/neuter programs have worked to decrease domestic animal populations in some parts of the country, other areas are considered high-kill. A staggering 70% of dogs that enter shelters in the southern part of the country are euthanized. Until now, there have been few options for these innocent were working, while in others parts, primar- victims. Pilots N Paws is helping to change that. ily in the south, pet overpopulation was still a huge problem. There had to be a way to turn a problem into a solution. Former pets were dying Pilots-N-Paws needlessly. They needed transport. 4651 Howe Road The dream quickly became a reality when the

RAMAPO-BERGEN ANIMAL REFUGE The leading, no-kill animal shelter in Bergen County.

Dedicated to providing financial support and educational resources to non-profit, no-kill animal rescue groups and organizations. Too often we hear about the millions of unwanted animals euthanized across America each year or read about unfathomable cruelty inflicted on defenseless creatures. Progress in the humane treatment of animals seems impossible. Fortunately, there are selfless, passionate people who are quietly saving lives – hands-on, one animal at a time. With pure hearts, boundless energy and very few resources, they work diligently day in and day out, to rescue animals in distress, heal their wounds, restore their confidence and teach them to trust.

Come. Adopt. Love. 2 Shelter Lane Oakland, NJ 07436 201-337-5180 rbari.org RBARI adheres to a “NO-KILL” policy, giving animals an open-ended stay at a warm, safe place until loving homes can be found.

Dedicated to the humane treatment of companion animals since 1939. Pet Adoption Animal Control Doggy Day Camp Paws For People

The Pitbullography Project "Imagine being judged because of how you look. Imagine being profiled as evil even though those people have not met you. Imagine being part of a breed that is constantly under scrutiny because of what people have done to them. This is the life of a breed of dog known as the “Pit Bull”. Pit Bull is a term that encompasses several breeds of dog, but is not an actual breed. It is a breed that is incredibly misjudged, mislabeled and mistreated and we at Goodpit are doing our best to try and change those views. Goodpit was started by NJ Photographer, Jill Caren after falling in love with the breed when she adopted 2 of her own back in 2001. After experiencing the prejudice first hand she began to learn more about the breed and now works hard to educate others on how spectacular these dogs really are. Goodpit.com features photo journalistic stories of “bad pit bulls” gone good. Through a combination of pictures and in-
