House calls permit us to bring our highly qualified staff and medical expertise right to your home. Pets that are fearful in the waiting room or otherwise stressed by coming to our office can benefit from being examined in their own environment, where they are likely to feel more secure and calm. This permits us to better evaluate behavior and overall demeanor in a more relaxed and natural setting. There are many reasons to consider taking advantage of our house-call services, so call today to learn if your pet might benefit from a different type of veterinary care experience. PROVIDED BY:

What is Animal Chiropractic? Chiropractic restores proper function to the spine and joints of the body, by applying a specific adjustment to the joints that are not moving properly. A chiropractic adjustment is defined as a short lever, high velocity controlled thrust by hand or instrument that is directed at specific articulations to correct vertebral subluxations. A vertebral subluxation is defined as a spinal misalignment or joint dysfunction resulting in neurological or biomechanical dysfunction.
Animal chiropractic evaluation includes obtaining a case history consisting of information from the owner, veterinarian and any radiographs or laboratory analysis, and information involving previous diagnoses and therapies. Animal chiropractic practice involves a detailed examination of the animal patient prior to the adjustment. This exam includes: posture analysis, gait analysis, vertebral and extremity static palpation, vertebral and extremity motion palpation, short leg analysis, orthopedic evaluation and neurological evaluation. Information from the case history and the examination are combined to determine the chiropractic adjustment the animal may require.
Chiropractic care is appropriate in treating: • Neck, Back, Leg and Tail Pain • Painful/Stiff Joints, Limping • Muscle Spasms, Nerve Problems • Disc Problems • Injuries from Falls and Accidents • Jaw or TMJ Problems • Event or Sports Injuries • Post-Surgical Care • Bowel, Bladder, Internal Medicine Disorders • Gait Abnormalities • Behavioral Problems • Nervousness • Maintenance of Joint and Spinal Health
Animal chiropractic does not dispense medications, perform surgery, inject medications or attempt to replace necessary traditional veterinary care. PROVIDED BY:

What to Bring. If you recently moved, bring a copy of your pet’s medical records with you. Write down any medications your pet may be taking and the doseage. When making an appointment, ask if you should bring a sample of your pet’s stool or urine. Make a List. Write down all the things that concern you about your pet: hair coat, diet, exercise program, toilet habits, etc. This will help you communicate better. Write it Down. Don’t be afraid to write down the information your veterinarian provides to you. Ask if there is a handout or a brochure containing more details.
Don’t Be Embarrassed. Your pet’s veterinarian is the other family doctor. There’s no need to feel awkward about asking anything or mentioning something that you’ve noticed. Your veterinarian wants to help keep your pet healthy and happy. Without your observations, important information may be missed. Ask About Emergency Coverage. Find out the process for after hours emergencies. If the veterinary hospital refers its patients to an emergency facility, be sure you know the address, phone number, and hours. PROVIDED BY:

“Bella” Marley: Success Story From Surgery (orthopedic) to Rehabilitation “Bella” is an active three year old Labrador retriever that presented as an orthopedic consultation for intermittent limping and discomfort for several months. This beautiful dog was diagnosed with a cranial cruciate tear, and Dr. Coudrai performed the orthopedic surgery. Shortly after, “Bel-

Along with this high tech healing, “Bella” was given massage, range of motion exercises and laser treatments, which helped to accelerate recuperation, decrease inflammation and pain, and helped to reverse muscle dysfunction. Weight-loss management was discussed with the caring owners and goals were set.
Each therapy session ended with at-home therapy instructions for the owners to perform with “Bella.” By the final session in rehab, “Bella” was able to happily run into the room to greet everyone! Leaner Pets Live Longer, Healthier Lives Did you know that by carefully monitoring your pet’s weight, you can help him live a longer and healthier life? Researchers recently found that overweight dogs exhibited more visible signs of aging, such as graying muzzles, impaired gait and reduced activity. Obese pets are more prone to certain health conditions including lameness, diabetes mellitus, and skin problems.

PET WISDOM:
When it comes to the last hour of your life, it will be great consolation to feel that you protected the poor, the helpless, and the unfortunate; and that you exercised a particular care toward animals. – Caroline Earle White BOARDING Ain’t Misbehavings Canine Sleep Over 156 W Commodore Blvd, Jackson NJ 732.833.1000
Even more compelling are the results of a 14year study conducted at the Nestlé Purina Pet Care Center that followed forty-eight Labrador retrievers for their entire lives. This study showed that lean-fed dogs, who received 25 percent less food than their littermates in a control group, lived an average of 15 percent (1.8 years) longer than control dogs. In addition to living longer, the leaner dogs lived healthier lives as well. The age at which 50 percent of the dogs required treatment for a chronic condition such as osteoarthritis was 12 years among lean-fed dogs and 9.9 years for the control group. So, how do you get your pet back on a healthy track? Ask your veterinarian if your pet is at his ideal body condition or if he could stand to shed a few pounds. Your veterinarian can recommend a diet designed for weight loss and suggest appropriate amounts to feed. He can also provide tips for getting your pet to burn more calories and shed those extra pounds. Remember that weight loss takes time and commitment. Be patient, the goal is to get your pet on track for a longer healthier life. PROVIDED BY:

Tips to follow when your pet goes missing or to find a pet: • Hang up signs in your neighborhood and put a large sign in front of your home. • If you find a lost pet please take to a local Veterinarian and they will scan for a microchip for free. • Contact the non-emergency police department, local shelters and veterinarians to report.

• Post to online sites on Facebook, Craigslist and other lost pet sites. • Go to your neighbors’ house and ask them to check their backyards. Most timid pets will look for a place to hide and seek shelter. • Get out and call for your pet by name. Enlist family and friends to canvas the neighborhood, in all directions, on the roads, and as the crow flies. Don’t try to predict where your pet could have gone. The best time to call for your pet is at night and at dawn. If you are calling from your car, drive slowly, roll down all windows, stop and turn your vehicle off frequently to listen.
FUN FACT:
Pets can hide pain so it’s up to you to look for subtle signs: a slight favoring of a paw, a little less interest at dinnertime, or hesitation when chasing a ball. Anything that varies from the norm could mean they are in some pain and may need to see the vet.
• If you lost a cat, put out a familiar scented blanket, towel or even his own litter box for him to find. • Visit all local animal shelters and do not rely on their information via telephone. Walk through and look at all the dogs and cats. Do this on a DAILY basis. • Ask your mailman to put a flyer in all your neighbors’ mailboxes. • If there has been any sightings of your pet, make sure you update everyone on the local sighting area. In some cases it would be a good idea to set up humane traps. Your local shelter or rescue can assist. • Even the friendliest pet may quickly become horrified. When lost they may hide from people and run away if he/she sees a person approaching, even their own family. Do NOT chase after a lost pet. They are much faster and you will only scare them more. Sit on the ground and talk in your normal tone repeating his name over and over again. It may take a few minutes or even hours for him to come closer to you. Most important... NEVER GIVE UP!
One of the best tools is to have your pets MICROCHIPPED & registered!

Making your decision more difficult is the fact that almost every producer has a specific philosophy of what makes their food unique. When choosing, always look for products that do not include added sugars, salt, and fillers. Due to the huge variety of natural pet foods available today, it's best to research brands online and then talk to the knowledgeable associates at your local pet supply store. They are the best resource for helping you find the best food for your dog or cat. PROVIDED BY:

Traveling with Pets The New Jersey Veterinary Medical Association (NJVMA) offers the following advice on how to decide whether including your pet will make the celebration memorable or whether it’s best to leave him/her at home.
Consider the company you’ll keep. Will there be a friend or family member present who is allergic to cats or afraid of dogs? Consider what other animals will be at your destination and whether your pet gets along with them.
Is your pet a good traveler? Be it car or airplane, some pets are very stressed in moving vehicles and planes. If traveling by plane, be sure to have your veterinary issued health certificates done in a timely manner. Nothing is worse than being turned away at the gate for inappropriate papers. Check with the host/hostess. Always ask the host of the party whether your pet is welcome. Create a safe place. Is your pet obedient?
Bring your pet’s crate so he has a safe place Only take your pet if he is well-behaved and to retreat if the festivities get a bit too loud. obedient. Is your pet normally friendly and peo- Also remember his favorite blanket, toys, food, ple-oriented? Does your pet know not to steal treats, and any medications he may take. food and jump on guests? Don’t ignore your pet. It’s easy to get caught up in activities and forget your pet. Make sure your pet’s feeding, walking and sleeping routine stays the same. Also, make sure to keep your pet safe and away from trash cans, chemicals, open doors, and other hazards which may be present in a home not normally accustomed to having pets around. Vaccinations and ID.
Be considerate of your pet’s needs. Is your pet used to gatherings of people and the accompanying noise? Don’t include a pet that is skittish and prefers to be alone or in quiet settings. Remember that pets may not find social gatherings enjoyable. Don’t let your eagerness to include them be the deciding factor. Forcing a pet into an unpleasant situation may result in undesirable behavior, resulting in unhappy people and pets.
Be sure your pet is up-to-date on vaccinations and that his pet identification tag has current contact information should he escape while you are away. Your pet should wear his collar at all times with his identification and verify that the collar cannot break/snap off easily. Take a current photo. When traveling with your pet it is also recommended that you take a current photo with you and keep it in your wallet and/or cell phone so in case you are separated it’s easier to help locate your pet. What is Stereotactic Radiation Therapy (SRT)? When Madison, an eight year-old English Bulldog, started snoring in her sleep, it became apparent it wasn’t the sound of heavy slumber. Following trips to the veterinarian, and medicine for suspected rhinitis, Madison was referred to the Veterinary MRI + Radiotherapy Center in Clifton, NJ, for a CT scan. The Veterinary Center provides technologically advanced diagnostic imaging and radiation therapy (RT). It’s like a regular outpatient hospital for patients with four legs. The scan and biopsy confirmed Madison’s “snores” were the result of a nasal carcinoma, a cancerous nose lesion impeding her breathing. This type of tumor is typically treated over several weeks with 18-21 radiation treatments. Madison had a better option: Stereotactic Radiation Therapy (SRT). No surgery, no 18-21 doses of radiation and no follow-up chemo. This state-of-the-art treatment was available right at the Veterinary MRI + Radiotherapy Center of NJ. The Center is one of only eight in North America with a machine that not only offers traditional photon and electron RT, but also SRT. This is the same technology used for human cancers at the Mayo Clinic and Massachusetts General. SRT is exceptionally precise/accurate, causing minimal side effects. Planning and treatments can be completed within one week. With only three treatments, Madison’s “snores” were gone. The only remnant of her cancer was a light pink area on her muzzle from the radiation beam. We know the importance of treating your pets with love and the best technology available. For more information please call 973-772-9902 or visit our website www.vetmrirt.com.

A 2013 study published in Physiology and Behavior found that cats who didn’t like to be touched but allowed their owners to stroke them anyway were more stressedout than those who avoided touch.

Buster’s Story We see a lot of great dogs in our rehab but some of them shine due to their can do attitude and their family’s commitment. Buster is one of those little guys. He was rescued by his family at 8 weeks. He traveled with a truck driver from a Missouri puppy mill to NJ. Mary and Mike immediately fell in love with this little 2 lb., 3 oz. Daschund. He was very lucky as Mary is also a nurse besides a caring mom. How important this would become in the years ahead.

PET ADOPTION QUESTIONS
WHAT DOES IT COST TO ADOPT FROM A SHELTER OR RESCUE? Generally speaking, fees range between $25 and $250. Sometimes pets are free if there is a special promotion going on; occasionally they will cost more.
In April of 2012, when he was 3 years old, Buster injured his back. He underwent a left T11-12 and right L1-L2 hemilaminectomies with intervertebral disc extrusion. After months of rest and rehab, Buster was able to walk and control his bowel/bladder again. However, in July 2013, Buster again injured his back. This time at levels L1-L4 with left hemilaminectomy performed at these levels. Buster initiated rehab with us in August 2013 about 2 1/2 weeks after his second surgery. His initial therapy focused on relieving pain and promoting healing. We were able to slowly progress to strengthening and gait training. His gait is unsteady but his back is not painful. He is able to enjoy life with his human and canine family. Buster continues to receive acupuncture and therapy weekly. He enjoys his ½ mile in the underwater treadmill but loves the liver and beef treats the best!
ARE ALL ANIMAL SHELTERS THE SAME? There are three kinds of adoption organizations: municipal animal shelters, private humane societies and SPCAs and rescue organizations. The first two are “brick and mortar” facilities; rescue groups are volunteer organizations that care for the pets in their homes.
HOW LONG DOES THE ADOPTION PROCESS TAKE? The adoption process can take minutes, more than an hour or even longer. It all depends on the type of organization and the adoption policies of that organization.

The Purr’n Pooch Foundation for Animals Dedicated to providing financial support and educational resources to non-profit, no-kill animal rescue groups and organizations. Too often we hear about the millions of unwanted animals euthanized across America each year or read about unfathomable cruelty inflicted on defenseless creatures. Progress in the humane treatment of animals seems impossible. Fortunately, there are selfless, passionate people who are quietly saving lives – hands-on, one animal at a time. With pure hearts, boundless energy and very few resources, they work diligently day in and day out, to rescue animals in distress, heal their wounds, restore their confidence and teach them to trust.
RESCUES & SHELTERS
Eleventh Hour Rescue
Their only crime is they are out of time. • Saving Death Row Dogs and Cats from kill shelters. • Providing foster homes until they find their forever homes. • Educating the community about animal over population and the importance of spaying and neutering. LOUIE
