ACUPUNCTURE
Acupuncture and Chiropractic in Veterinary Patients Both acupuncture and chiropractic are valuable tools in treating a wide variety of condition in our veterinary patients. Acupuncture is an ancient medical art in which needles are inserted into multiple points, stimulating the body’s own healing powers. Endorphins and other substances are released, decreasing pain, helping circulation and well being. Chiropractic looks for “fixations” or areas lacking motion and seeks to restore motion by manipulations of those areas, helping to restore energy, circulation, and vitality. Both of these modalities work well together and with other treatment, both western and holistic. The most common reason people request these treatments are for orthopedic and arthritic conditions. In our office, we combine acupuncture, chiropractic, as well as cold laser, herbs, western medicines, and nutritional therapies for treatment of a wide variety of conditions. Consider incorporating these treatments for the health of your pets!

When to Call Your Veterinarian Seizures: Seizures are a serious neurologic condition that must be monitored. Signs of a seizure include shaking, lying on the floor and paddling the legs, loss of awareness of surroundings, possible loss of bladder and bowel control, excessive salivation, and a clamped jaw.
Your pet isn’t acting quite right, should you call your veterinarian or wait a few days? The New Jersey Veterinary Medical Association offers the following tips to help you know when your pet needs to be seen by a doctor. Lethargic: This is perhaps the most important signal to phone your veterinarian. If your dog or cat is not responsive to calls for play or favorite treats and seems weak or unable to stand, do not delay.
Excessive vomiting or diarrhea: These symptoms could indicate anything from a simple stomach upset to serious disease. Even if your pet is not seriously ill, ignoring these symptoms could lead to dehydration.
Pain: Indicated by crying, panting and restless pacing, should not be ignored. Pain can also be indicated by a reluctance to move around.
Unconscious or difficult to awaken: Dazed behavior can occur with fever, metabolic disease, ingestion of human medications, changes in blood sugar levels, or diseases of the brain. It’s important to see your vet that day.
Lameness: Limping that persists more than a few hours warrants a call to the veterinarian. Losing blood: Bleeding from the mouth, nose or rectum demands immediate attention, as does a painful eye held closed.
Refusing to eat or drink: Your pet should not go more than a day without drinking. If your dog or cat won’t eat their usual meal but will hunUnable to go to the bathroom: Male cats seen grily scarf down treats or table food, this may straining in the litter box may have a danger- mean a problem exists. ous urinary tract blockage. Help for Pet Owners in Need As pet owners we all incur veterinary medical bills, which, depending on the medical emergency or condition, can be astronomical. Pet insurance can help cover some of the costs, if you have it. But there are times when a pet’s illness can exceed your resources and pet owners may face an agonizing choice. Here are some resources you can look to for help.
RedRover.org Relief program provides financial and emotional support to Good Samaritans, animal rescuers and pet owners to help them care for animals in life-threatening situations and resources to help victims of domestic violence escape abusive environments with their pets. The Pet Fund is a registered 501(c) 3 nonprofit association that provides financial assistance to owners of domestic animals who need veterinary care. The AAHA Foundation works with AAHA-accredited veterinary practices to identify pets in need. Accredited practices may then apply for assistance from the Fund for emergency and non-elective treatment of abandoned pets and pets whose owners are facing financial hardship. IMOM.org This all-volunteer 501(c)(3) charity helps people cover vet bills when they just can’t do it themselves. They also help with spay/neuter and have a staff on hand to answer questions or get you the resources you need for any issues with your pet. Banfield Charitable Trust has numerous programs including grants to help with veterinary care, food programs (like Meals on Wheels), helping homebound pet owners and owners in hospice care among others.

HANK: From Stray to Major League All-Star Hank, the same scruffy, dirty little stray that had been run over by a car and had two chipped teeth when he stumbled into the Milwaukee Brewers training camp last spring and was adopted by the team as their ‘unofficial’ mascot won The 2015 Dog of the Year - taking home the Golden Hydrant award!
This award caps off an amazing year for Hank: not only did he receive a standing ovation at Brewers opening day, but he also met his namesake Hank Aaron in August and even got his own bobblehead in September! The Brewers teamed up with the Wisconsin Humane Society and so far have raised more than $150,000 through Hank-related merchandise and fundraisers, all thanks to little stray named Hank. Good boy Hank!

• Always observe the rules posted at the park. • Never leave your dog unattended. • Make sure your dog is current on his/her shots and has a valid license. • Toys and treats are best left behind as not all dogs ‘share’ well. • Don’t allow your dog to ‘hump’ or dominate other dogs or people. • Spayed / neutered animals are recommended. • If your dog becomes unruly or plays rough, leash him and leave immediately. • Always clean up after your dog. Most parks will have waste bags and disposal bins to make it very easy. This is a primary reason dog parks get complaints, so pay attention to the ’poop’.

Making your decision more difficult is the fact that almost every producer has a specific philosophy of what makes their food unique. When choosing, always look for products that do not include added sugars, salt, and fillers. PET FRIENDLY RENTALS The number of American households with pets continues to climb. It’s estimated that between half and three-quarters of renters either have or want pets. If you’re looking to rent with your pet pals, it’s best to first do some research. The rules regarding pets vary from one rental community to another. Many have specific regulations regarding the size and type of pets that are permitted. Be sure to contact the rental office directly to get a clear understanding of their pet policy before signing the lease. Rehab Techniques for Canine Obesity When thinking about rehabilitation most people think about backs, knees and hips but what about obesity? How many other problems are exacerbated or even caused by having too much body weight causing stress to joints, heart and other organs. Obesity is at epidemic levels in the USA. This goes for our pets as well as ourselves. Rehabilitation can help these problems with structured exercise and conditioning. Junior Before & After

In April of 2015, I received a call from Junior Mint’s mom. She wanted my help with her dachshund’s weight loss / healthy life style changes. Junior had been diagnosed with Cushing’s disease and had been overweight most of his life. He stepped on the scale at 52 lbs. His belly did not clear the ground so he had to shift his weight side to side to walk. He rested frequently and panted with minimal exertion. My first step was to begin safe exercises and help his family modify his diet. With encouragement and guidance they gradually made changes in both areas. Junior attended weekly therapy with his housemate Rambo (who started at 42 lbs). Exercise consisted of obstacle courses, wobble board, underwater treadmill and review of their exercise / diet home log. In only four months, Junior lost 14 lbs! Today, he has more energy, better gait, beginnings of a waist and even enjoys his vegetables! He will continue therapy and his home program with a goal of losing at least 10 lbs more. Kudos to his parents for their dedication to his health! PROVIDED BY:

The Senior Scenter A Cage Free Senior Dog Sanctuary
Our “Dog House” was built to accommodate Senior Dogs that have been dumped by their owners or have become “homeless” through no fault of their own. Many times their owner has been admitted to a nursing home or has passed on. Because we are small and depend on volunteers we must limit the number of seniors we can house and unfortunately cannot take them all. None of the seniors live in cages. Everyone has free range of their sanctuary home and the yard 24/7. Many have multiple medical problems and may only have weeks or months to live. It is our mission to make sure that they are loved and comfortable during their last moments on earth. We rely solely on donations which is challenging since most of our dogs come and stay to the end so there are no adoption fees as with other rescues/shelters. We provide them with EVERY comfort a dog could want. The best food, comfy beds, a/c or heat, music 24/7 and LOTS of love! There are several ways you can help our seniors if you like what we do!
