Understanding Acupuncture and How It May Help Your Pet What is acupuncture?

Can it be harmful?

Acupuncture is a form of medicine which encourages the body to heal itself. Fine, sterile needles are inserted into the skin and underlying tissues at specific locations called points. This process sends a signal to the nervous system telling the body to heal and return to normal function. Acupuncture has been in use for more than 5,000 years.

Acupuncture is very safe and there are no negative side effects when administered by a trained professional. Some possible contraindications include pregnancy (certain points should be avoided), open fractures, and extremely weak or debilitated animals. Placing needles close to tumors is also avoided.

When is acupuncture used? Acupuncture may be used for any condition whether chronic, acute, or atypical and can be used alone or in conjunction with Western medicine. Some conditions that respond well include: Degenerative Joint Disease/Osteoarthritis Hip Dysplasia • Wound Healing • Chronic Pain Neck/Back Pain • Intervertebral Disk Disease Urinary Incontinence • Some Allergies Nerve Disorders • Degenerative Myelopathy Chemotherapy to decrease side-effects Wobbler Syndrome/Cervical Issues • Infertility Overall Well-Being

How will my pet react to the needles? Most animals do not mind the needles. Some of the acupuncture points may be sensitive, however, very few animals react negatively to the experience. Pets may choose to walk around during the session or lay down and relax. The needles stay in for approximately 15 minutes, and owners are always invited to watch and be part of the appointment. hase and Jennifer Utley created The Utley Foundation to bring awareness to the increasing epidemic of animal cruelty. The Utley’s have worked alongside the Pennsylvania SPCA for several years to help raise funds for the fight against animal neglect, pain and suffering. Through The Utley Foundation, they will not only be able to continue to support the Pennsylvania SPCA, but also to expand their efforts to stop animal cruelty by educating children on the proper treatment of animals. In 2008, Chase and Jennifer Utley began their public support by hosting a series of Utley AllStar Animals events to support the Pennsylvania SPCA’s Etana Fund, which helps prevent and protect against future abuse and neglect through their Humane Law Enforcement department. The department investigates an average of 17 cruelty cases each day to prosecute criminals to the fullest extent of the law. The Utley Foundation’s mission is to educate the community about the proper treatment of animals and fund non-profit organizations that are active in the fight against animal neglect, pain, and suffering. The Utley Foundation’s launch has raised awareness and much needed funds through some amazing events:

sented by the City of Philadelphia Mural Arts Program and the Utley Foundation and supported by Mitchell & Ness Nostalgia Co., the mural will promote the proper care and treatment of animals in the heart of the community at the Russell H. Fans holding tickets to the game can partake in a silent auction and are encouraged to bring donation items for the Pennsylvania SPCA, who also bring adoptable pets to the game. Since 2008 the event has raised over $183,000 for the Pennsylvania SPCA and found loving homes for many homeless pets. WHAT IS ANIMAL LAW?

“A

nimal Law” is an evolving and expanding field of law that comes into our lives much more often than one would think! There are very few practicing attorneys in our area that focus their work on animal related issues. The spectrum of what can be called “animal law” ranges from the animals we eat – to animals in zoos - to the animals we keep in our homes as companions. There are many different scenarios where you may want to consult with an attorney who specializes in animal law: • Are you arguing with a former partner, spouse, or someone else about who should keep your pet? • Are you the victim of a dog bite? • Is your dog being wrongfully accused of biting someone else? • Do you have a dispute with your landlord over pet ownership or type of pets in your home?

• Would you like to prepare a will or trust with your pet in mind? • Are you a rescue organization or veterinarian who would like to form a business or LLC? If you are faced with an animal related issue, you should consult with an attorney who recognizes the importance of your animals as a part of your family and is aware of the laws facing animals and their families today in Pennsylvania and New Jersey. Sandra Jones, Esquire, of Giannascoli & Associates PC, Exton, PA, is proud to announce her focus and commitment to the area of animal law. Sandra is licensed to practice law in Pennsylvania and New Jersey, and she currently teaches “Animals and the Law” at Rutgers University. Sandra was recently appointed to the Board of Philadelphia Animal Care and Control, and she serves as an active volunteer and legal mentor to a well known animal advocacy group.

Dog Park Etiquette

D

og Parks are a great way to let your canine pal socialize with other dogs and get some much needed exercise... as they say ‘a tired dog is a happy dog’. It’s a good idea to first visit a few parks without ‘Spot’ to select one that’s not too large or busy. It’s also important to observe the rules posted by the park to ensure a safe and happy experience for both canine and human. Below are a few basic suggestions for getting the most out of your visit to the dog park: • Never leave your dog unattended. • Clean up after your dog. Most parks have waste bags or scoopers available. This is a primary reason that dog parks get complaints, so pay attention to the ’poop’. • Make sure your dog is current on his/her shots and has a valid license. • Don’t bring dogs younger than 4 months to a dog park. They won’t have all the necessary vaccinations. • Toys are best left behind as not all dogs ‘share’ well. If you must bring a toy for a fetch game, bring something you can afford to lose - and be prepared to do just that. • Don’t allow your dog to ‘hump’ or dominate other dogs or people. • Spayed/neutered animals are recommended – do not bring females in heat if not spayed. • Keep your dog on-leash until you get to the off-leash area. It’s not just respectful to other dog owners, it’s much safer for your dog. • Close all doors to the dog park or dog run after entering or exiting. • If your dog becomes unruly or plays rough, leash him and leave immediately. • Don’t smoke or eat while at the dog park. Cigarette butts and food wrappers are tempting treats to dogs. • As always, observe all of the rules posted at the dog park and have a ball!

EQUINE CREMATION Pet Wisdom:

Physical exercise is a great way to get your pet tired, but adding even a dollop of mental exercise can increase the benefits exponentially. A jog around the block is good, adding in a few SITs or a seek game during the run can be great.

Here it is…

Most of the issues you’re having with your best friend are based in forward acts, or forward prey, like jumping, nipping, biting, destroying and aggression. If your pal’s forward prey drive is fully satisfied- both physically and mentally- the drive automatically becomes weaker and easier to control. The goal of any canine exercise regimen is to take an unbridled NEED and turn it into a controllable WANT. A fully satisfied NEED naturally turns into a WANT.

Oogy: The dog only a family (and the rest of us) could love! P hilly has no shortage of famous pets but few have endured as much and inspired as many as our very own Oogy. We had the pleasure of meeting Oogy at the L’Oreal Your Dog is Worth It Too event in August. Amazingly, his deformity

As fate would have it Larry Levin and family were at the same animal hospital with their ailing cat who was being put to sleep. As the family was preparing to leave the hospital that day, in came a newly stitched Oogy, ready for a walk. The family instantly fell in love with the dog, brought him home and the rest, as they say, is history. As the subject of Levin’s New York Times Bestselling book and an appearance on Oprah, Oogy has reached the canine equivalent of Rock Star status. His Facebook page boasts over 20,000 fans who write him about how his story has moved them to tears. Yet Oogy hasn’t let any of this go to his beautiful yet slightly irregular shaped head…he’s a dog who’s happiest when hanging with his humans.

According to Levin, he hasn’t let all this hero worship go to his head either. As he explains ithe was just at the right place at the right time, “I’ve come to believe that there are a lot more Oogy strikes a handsome pose people doing great things for animals. One aniwasn’t the first thing I noticed about Oogy... no, mal at a time. This is nothing unique.” I was immediately struck by just how sweet this Yes, that may be true…but we’re still happy he ‘gentle giant’ is – especially in the midst of all the was there to do it for Oogy. distractions that are common at a large event. Yes, it was obvious, this was one special guy. If you are unfamiliar with Oogy’s story, he was used as bait for fighting dogs when he was barely four months old. He had much of the left side of face including the ear torn away, his cheekbone shattered, and part of his jaw broken off. Left to die, he was found by police during a drug raid and taken to Ardmore Animal Hospital just outside Philly. There, after hours of surgery that Oogy & Frank: just a couple of dudes enjoying a perfect summer day saved him, he began to thrive. Oogy: The Dog Only a Family Could Love By Larry Levin A story of adoption and rescue on many levels, Oogy also examines how Oogy’s loving, joyful spirit and quiet dignity continues to inspire everyone he meets. Published in October 2010 to high praise, Oogy spent ten weeks on the New York Times bestseller list. Oogy makes frequent appearances to benefit rescues and shelters.

our family pet has a medical or traumatic emergency! What are you going to do? Call 9-1-1? Call for an ambulance? You will be taking your pet to the vet; but what do you do until you get there? First Aid & CPR, LLC is an off-site training company that brings the training to you. Their experienced instructors with more than 30 years of emergency service background and instruction are trained to teach you what to do in the event of an emergency. The Pet First Aid and Pet CPR class they offer is an American Safety & Health Institute certification course. They will teach you to approach the scene safely, give rescue breaths, check for vital signs and if necessary, perform CPR. You will be trained in checking for dehydration, treating broken bones, bleeding, shock, heat and cold emergencies, poisonings and much more. This video-driven, hands-on course allows the students to watch and practice on actual dog and cat manikins. The students will actually feel a pulse, see the chest rise when rescue breaths are given and perform the skills of CPR. Visit us at www.PetResponder.com or call to set up a course at 888-242-4259.

Families no longer have to worry about providing adequate time, attention, and care for their pets while a loved one is hospitalized. Since it began in 2005, Pinups for Pitbulls has worked to reestablish the defamed reputation of Pit Bull type dogs as America’s premier companion animal, war hero, and therapy dog. Pinups for Pitbulls raises funds through the sale of PFPB merchandise including their very popular Pin Up Calendar, which JERSEY Pet Pages and PHILLY Pet Pages are proud to support. The calendar features 12 months of vintage-style posters featuring women with pit bull type dogs and other animals. In addition, Pinups for Pitbulls can be found promoting their mission at various events nationwide throughout the year. For more information please visit www.pinupsforpitbulls.org 2013

Greyfriars Bobby

I

n 1858, a man named John Gray was buried in old Greyfriars Churchyard in Scotland. His grave, unmarked by any stone, was not wholly disregarded or forgotten. For fourteen years the dead man’s faithful dog kept constant watch and guard over the grave until his own death in 1872. The famous Skye Terrier, Greyfriars Bobby, was so devoted to his master John Gray, even in death, for fourteen years Bobby lay on the grave only leaving for food. It was reported that each day people would stand at the entrance of the graveyard waiting for the one o’clock gun and the appearance of Bobby leaving the grave for his midday meal. When Bobby died, the Scotsman newspaper printed an obituary for the only canine Freeman of the City. Bobby was buried next to his master at Greyfriars. A red granite water fountain was placed with a statue of Bobby in bronze resting on top in memory of their loyal friendship.

hether you’re playing catch, swimming in the surf, running or just walking along the shore, the beach is a favorite spot for Jersey pets and their humans. Here’s a little ‘etiquette’ for you and your canine beach buddy: • Always keep your dog leashed when there is a leash law. • It should go without saying but you must always clean up after your dog… many beach areas provide pet waste bags and disposal areas.

• Always remember to bring plenty of fresh water for your pet!

Charlie’s Story – From the Sidelines

L

ooking to maintain your pet’s fitness or help him recover from an injury? DDR’s gentle, loving care helps puppies to seniors live their lives to the fullest with individualized therapy. Charlie came to therapy after a collision during an agility run. His mom thought he had injured his leg. His evaluation showed upper back spasm and tightness-which we treated. Then, after a 2 month break, Charlie returned to agility but continued to have muscle spasms. I referred Charlie to VOSM in Maryland due to a suspected biceps and supraspinatus tendonitis (shoulder sprain) and medial shoulder instability (stretched capsule). These diagnoses were confirmed by his orthopedist, Sherman Canapp DVM. Charlie underwent Arthroscopic surgery and Radio Frequency to repair the capsule and stem cell treatment to promote cartilage regeneration. Now

Charlie is following a strict rehab protocol while his shoulders heal. He is in hobbles, a brace to protect his shoulders from moving too much (compromising the healing process). Under the guidance of Lisa Saez, PT, CCRT of Dalia’s Doggie Rehab, LLC and the watchful eye of his mom, his therapy includes stretching, massage, laser, electric stimulation and strengthening. This will enable him to heal and return to living a full life, including normal exercise and agility! DDR will help Charlie off the injured reserve list and get back in the game! Dalia’s Doggie Rehab, LLC is located at 1843B Hooper Avenue in Toms River, NJ. We offer canine rehab services in Ocean County. Lisa Saez, PT, CCRT the founder & owner has 27 years’ experience in Physical Therapy and rehabilitation. Dalia, her 15 ½ year chocolate Labrador is the inspiration for DDR and oversees operations from the canine perspective!

Strays Around the World

S

trays Around the World is a documentary photo project started by Stephanie Madeline in 2010, inspired by a trip to Puerto Rico. It was there she realized the extent of the stray animal over population problem of other countries. The New Jersey based pet photographer of Chase & Snap Pet Photography will travel the world documenting strays in order to raise awareness as well as raise funds for organizations with similar causes.

from New Jersey visited Puerto Rico with the intention of touring the island to glean firsthand, the scope of stray dogs and cats. They visited several beaches and towns and observed countless orphaned dogs roaming the island. Puerto Rico has over 150,000 homeless dogs. They returned from that initial trip with a dozen of those abandoned dogs and formed Project Animal Worldwide, a New Jersey 501(c)(3) nonprofit to help homeless and abandoned dogs and cats through spay and neuter along with humane education programs.

Just a few of the many benefits of adopting a SENIOR PET!

1

They usually have a calmer temperament… think of it as a canine retiree! Easy walks, plenty of naps and lounging around make senior pets the mellow choice. Seniors can also inspire you to slow down and ‘stop to smell the roses’. Petting an animal has many medical benefits for humans such as lowering your heart rate…and making you smile!

2

The puppy phase is over! Senior pets are done with teething, nipping and destroying the furniture. Also, older dogs are likely to already be housetrained—and even if they’re not, they have the physical and mental abilities to pick it up really fast (unlike puppies).

3

Yes, you can teach an older dog a new trick! Older dogs can actually be easier to train because they are great at focusing on you—and on the task at hand. Plus, all those years of experience reading humans can help them quickly figure out how to do what you’re asking.

4

What you see is what you get: you’ll know important things like their fullgrown size, personality and grooming requirements…if you’re not so into surprises, an older dog is for you!

5

At shelters, older dogs are often the last to be adopted and the first to be euthanized. Adopting an older pet so that he or she can live out their golden years in a stable, secure and loving environment is the ultimate act of love… go ahead – be a hero!

I Rescued a Human Today

H

er eyes met mine as she walked down the corridor peering apprehensively into the kennels. I felt her need instantly and knew I had to help her.

was so bright, I instantly jumped into her arms.

I wagged my tail, not too exuberantly, so she wouldn’t be afraid. As she stopped at my kennel I blocked her view from a little accident I had in the back of my cage. I didn’t want her to know that I hadn’t been walked today. Sometimes the overworked shelter keepers get too busy and I didn’t want her to think poorly of them.

I would promise to do everything I could to see that radiant smile and sparkle in her eyes.

As she read my kennel card I hoped that she wouldn’t feel sad about my past. I only have the future to look forward to and want to make a difference in someone’s life.

Written by Janine Allen CPDT, Rescue Me Dog’s professional dog trainer. Janine’s passion is working with people and their dogs. She provides demonstrations for those who have adopted shelter dogs, lends email support to adopted dog owners, and aids shelter staff and volunteers in understanding dog behavior to increase their adoptability.

She got down on her knees and made little kissy sounds at me. I shoved my shoulder and side of my head up against the bars to comfort her. Gentle fingertips caressed my neck; she was desperate for companionship. A tear fell down her cheek and I raised my paw to assure her that all would be well.

I would promise to keep her safe. I would promise to always be by her side.

I was so fortunate that she came down my corridor. So many more are out there who haven’t walked the corridors. So many more to be saved. At least I could save one. I rescued a human today.

Soon my kennel door opened and her smile Copyright 2011 Rescue Me Dog; rescuemedog.org/dog-blog/i-rescued-a-human-today-by-janine-allen/

A WRINKLE IN TIME...read on. The Indian Solid Gold (Curcumin) and the Solid Gold SunDancer Dog Food The best dog food that you can buy for your dog is the Solid Gold SunDancer. It has no grains and no gluten. To control gas production, and maybe bloat in dogs, SunDancer uses tapioca and quinoa, called the Food of the Future. The meat is chicken and fish, all the Oriental dogs, the Arctic dogs, and dogs from England, Scotland, Ireland and water dogs, such as labs and poodles, were fed a fishbased diet and sea vegetation, such as in our Sea Meal, which is always fed with our dog food. Retrievers, terriers and spaniels, were originally from England are included. Sea Meal is effective against allergies and scratching. Curcumin is the root of the turmeric plant, and is in our SunDancer dog food, Curcumin has a 4,000 year old history in India for helping a wide variety of health problems. Dr. Oz on TV frequently talks about curcumin. Edgar Cayce, the sleeping prophet, said the two greatest gifts from God to Man are curcumin and olive oil. The Jan. 2003 issue of Cancer Research declared that curcumin has the ability to “suppress proliferation of cancer cells.” The October 2010 issue of “Nutrition and Cancer” indicated that curcumin makes chemo more effective. Recently, a breeder of Dalmatians talked with our sales person about using our SunDancer dog food. He had been feeding a cheap, low quality dog food. He decided to continue to feed the inferior food and buy curcumin/turmeric in a health food store and add it to the dog’s food. BIG MISTAKE! About a month later he called our store. He asked, “Have you ever seen a yellow Dalmatian?” He had one. He had overdosed on the curcumin. First of all, curcumin has to be cooked at a low temperature and must be mixed with oils to release the active properties. He rushed the dog to the vets. He never told the vet what he had done. So after extensive and expensive test, on the liver and kidneys, costing over $350, he called us. We put the dog on our non-curcumin Holistique Blendz dry dog food. Holistic does not mean natural or organic. It means that the whole body works together-mind, body and spirit. See the previous information on problems with white, near white or light colored dogs. White dogs absorb more ultra violet light (photo-aging) which may depress the immune system. Holistique Blendz is only 18% protein from fish, to spare stress on the organs. It is particularly effective on dogs with tear stains. Most of the tear stains are on white or light color dogs. So dropping the protein to 18% helps. Sissy has an 18 year old Dane mix. She was all gray on the muzzle. After six months on the SunDancer, the black came back.

Now for our cute story – “A Wrinkle in Time”

It was during WWII, Sissy, the owner of Solid Gold, lived in N.J. Her father worked for the army getting hard to find products. One summer, he was transferred to New Mexico. Sissy and her mother went there for the summer to be with him. In the cool of the evenings, the kids would go to a local stable to play with the horses. The kids loved to groom the horses. Sissy’s favorite was Fury, owned by Mr. O. Mr. O. told Sissy that if she would give Fury a daily brushing, he would teach her how to ride. So the entire summer was a delightful experience. Eventually, the summer came to an end, and Sissy returned back home. It was several years later, after the war was over, that Sissy was reading the paper. She saw a familiar photograph. She asked her mother why Mr. O’s picture was in the paper. Her mother smiled, it was a picture of Dr. Robert Oppenheimer, the Father of the Atomic Bomb in Los Alamos, New Mexico. Cat Diary

T

oday my attempt to kill my captors by weaving around their feet while they were walking almost succeeded, must try this at the top of the stairs.

A Trip to the Cinema A man goes into a cinema with his dog to watch a film. It’s a romantic comedy and when there’s a funny scene the dog starts laughing. A little later on there’s a sad part and suddenly the dog starts crying. This goes on throughout the entire film, laughing and crying at all the right places. A man sitting a few rows back has witnessed the entire thing and decides to follow the man out. In the foyer, he approaches the dog owner and says, “That’s truly amazing!” “It certainly is” The dog owner replied, “He hated the book!”
