Student-Athletes Celebrate Their Accomplishments at 18th Annual Jersey Awards By John Sorce
RED BANK – Another school year has come and gone, with success stories on and off the playing field. Many top athletes who performed on the field and in the classroom across the Shore Conference were honored. However, only a few well-rounded student-athletes were recognized for their accomplishments at the 18th annual Jersey Awards on Tuesday, June 19 at Teak Rooftop in Red Bank. The event was fully sponsored by our wonderful local businesses, which rewarded the accomplishments of our local studentathletes and their guests. Twenty-six of the top student-athletes in the Shore Conference were honored on a picturesque night. With the event being held on the upper level of Teak, attendees had the luxury of being either inside or outside, where the JSN team conducted interviews of the athletes and their coaches which will be posted on the JSN YouTube page this month. Please visit JSN, JERSEY SPORTING NEWS. Each recipient received a Tiffany &Co. trophy engraved with their name, sport, school and sponsor. The Jersey Awards are completely different than any other awards, because there is an emphasis on the work done in the classroom as well as on the field. All 26 of these senior student-athletes are excellent students. While many of them will continue their athletic careers moving forward, there will come a time where they’ll understand that education is very important. An education is something that no one can ever take away from you. JSN certainly factors in the athletic performances of these young men and women. It’s what they accomplish in the classroom and in the community that separates them from
other top athletes in our area. Players were represented from schools across the Shore Conference, coming from both Monmouth and Ocean counties. Senior year of high school is a year that many people say you will never forget. These young adults do so much on and off the playing field. Now, the Class of 2018 will go their separate ways off to colleges across the country. For one magical night, there was a time to reflect and appreciate just how much they have accomplished throughout their high school careers. A special “THANK YOU!” to our Platinum Sponsors: Joe Leone’s, Teak, Advisors Mortgage Group, SportsCare Institute, United States Marine Corps, U.S. Army, and Audi Eatontown. The Jersey Awards and JSN as a whole would not be possible without your support. Francesca Attardi, owner and publisher of JSN, also deserves so much credit. Francesca did an incredible job in putting this wonderful evening together. Admittedly, I did not know what to expect when I arrived. Fran made it a night to remember for everyone involved. This was my first year with JSN and my first time attending the Jersey Awards. It is amazing what this publication has become and to see the place packed with excitement. JSN’s recognition of these local student-athletes, coaches and athletic directors was an incredible experience. JSN would also like to thank all the players, parents and coaches who took the time to come out to this wonderful event. For some of these members of our local athletic programs, it draws an end to their athletic careers. It was an honor to be a part of something that recognizes so many talented athletes who have bright futures ahead of them in whatever they decide to pursue.

Ranney Falls Short in Shore Conference Playoffs By Michael Ward
The season for the Ranney Boys’ Basketball Team was a good one. The team boasted an impressive 22-4 season record, but unfortunately fell short as they entered the playoffs. Within the quarterfinal round, Ranney was knocked out by Roselle Catholic with a score of 69-44. The new coach and players Ranney were able to fold into the mix added significantly to their success throughout the season, but it appears as if those additions will be the building blocks for a more successful playoff drive next season. Nathaniel Pierre Louis had 13 points for fifthseeded Roselle Catholic, in its 69-44 victory over fourth-seeded Ranney in the quarterfinal round of the South Jersey, Non-Public B tournament in Tinton Falls.
In their last regular season game, the team faced a fierce competitor in Long Branch. Scottie Lewis converted two free-throws with 1.8 seconds remaining to give Ranney a 5755 victory over Long Branch in Long Branch.
Anthony Velazquez scored a game-high 18 points for Long Branch. Tyree Morris put up 10 points. Ranney trailed 31-29 at halftime, but used a 17-9 third quarter to swing the momentum.
Bryan Antoine and Scottie Lewis paced Ranney with 14 points each. In the first round of playoffs, Ranney faced off against St. Rose.
Ranney recorded the first SCT victory in school history.
Scottie Lewis recorded 11 points, 10 rebounds, five assists and two blocks to lead fourth-seeded Ranney to a 74-45 victory over 13th-seeded St. Rose in the first round of the South Jersey, Non-Public B tournament in Tinton Falls.
Bryan Antoine had 19 points, seven rebounds and six assists for Ranney, which outscored Brick Township 50-30 through three quarters. Alex Klatsky had 12 points, while Joe Mahoney chipped in with eight points and four assists. James Geraghty finished with eight points, six rebounds and four assists.
Ranney featured a balanced offensive attack as Alex Klatsky had 23 points and four steals and Bryan Antoine added 10 points, five rebounds and nine assists. John Crowley scored 11 points for St. Rose.

I have worked hard to develop that atmosphere here at Allure Plastic Surgery Center.” Now being one of Monmouth County’s most sought after plastic surgeons, Dr. Taylor first discovered a love of art and science in adolescence and then went on to pursue his undergraduate degrees in engineering and molecular biology at M.I.T. LONG BRANCH’S W 170 LBS Long Branch wrestling has been successful under head coach Danny George (this was his 26th season) and this year was no different as the Green Wave finished with a 16 and 4 record and finished ranked 6th in the group 4 rankings with many wrestlers placing in the top ten in the region. Head coach Dan George summed up the season this way by saying “we won two tournaments this season and finished second in the district behind only CBA while reaching the state final against Jackson Memorial so we had a very exciting season”. Some of the wrestlers who had success this season were Joe Jasio who finished with a record of 33-3 at 220 pounds and placed in the top 12 in the state. John Tomlinson who finished with a 22-3 record in the heavyweight division and finished fourth in the region while being a district champ. Lamont Reid
With 8 seniors to replace next year’s team has some work to do but Coach George is optimistic with the younger wrestlers having success as the two middle schools that feed into Long Branch both finished undefeated. As coach George said, “We are looking to reload not rebuild”. Coach George wants to give a special thanks to his assistant coaches in Joe Keagle, John Jasio, and Doug Cornell as coach George missed considerable time this season while having a hip replaced.”Their contribution was tremendous and I thank them for all of their efforts”.

thoughts from our award recipients and families
I would like to thank Audi of Eatontown for sponsoring my Athlete of the Year Award from Jersey Sporting News. The event was enjoyable and after dedicating 14 years to the game of golf, it meant a lot to me to be awarded the JSN Golfer of the Year. I am proud of the accomplishment and hope to encourage other young golfers to work hard in both sports and academics. Thank you again to all of the people who coordinated and sponsored the Jersey Sporting News Awards this year. Alyssa Aurilio Shore Regional Again, on behalf of Alexandra Cucich and our family we just wanted to thank you for a wonderful evening at the JSN Jersey Awards and Ace Gymnastics for sponsoring the award. It was an honor for Alexandra to be selected as the Gymnast of the Year. All of your hard work did not go unrecognized. It was a beautiful event! Best Regards, JoAnn Cucich Dear Barrett Roofs and Jersey Sporting News, Thank you for sponsoring the Girls Swimming award for Shore Regional's Anna Greenberg. It meant a lot to Anna and her family to be honored at the very lovely JSN Jersey Awards ceremony at Teak Restaurant. Anna was a 3 sport athlete at Shore Regional, took many AP and IB courses and was a member of the National Honor Society, and completed hours of community service through the Shore branch of the Rotarian Interact Club, Girl Scouts of America and her temple. She is a kind, intelligent and well-rounded young woman, and will continue to positively impact her community as she furthers her education at Syracuse University in the fall. Thank you again for your generous contribution to recognize this outstanding young woman and her accomplishments! Best, Katie McGowan Head Coach, Shore Regional Boys and Girls Swimming Hello Francesca, Thank you for a wonderful event last night. We would like to thank Francesca for all of her efforts in coordinating the JSN Awards. Her enthusiasm and dedication to sporting news in Ocean and Monmouth counties is evident. The event atmosphere was relaxed and friendly, and the venue with the Teak's rooftop deck was great. To the sponsors who helped make this evening possible, we are grateful. We especially would like to thank the Advisors Mortgage Group for sponsoring the Volleyball Player of the Year.
