POWERHOUSE WALL HAS SOME UNFINISHED BUSINESS TO TAKE CARE OF By Mike Ready

he went 2-0 in 13 innings pitched. He’s also an accomplished first baseman hitting .333 a year ago with six doubles and 14 RBI.

WALL – On paper, Wall – ranked No. 4 in the NJ.com Preseason Top 10 and No.1 in the Shore Conference – appears to be the team to beat not only in the Shore, but quite possibly the entire state.

Sharkey – the starting centerfielder and a Florida State commit – will also be available to pitch but he’ll primarily roam the outfield. A year ago he hit .300 with three home runs, seven doubles and 24 RBI as a sophomore. With a year under his belt you can expect his offensive numbers to climb even higher this season along with increased time on the mound.

With four starting pitchers coming back, including SSN Pitcher of the Year Trey Dombroski, and all but one position player set to return, Wall is considered by many to be the most formidable team the Shore Conference has seen entering the regular season in many years. That’s all fine and dandy for the high school baseball fans to converse about, but for the Crimson Knights players, last year’s loss in the NJSIAA Central Jersey Group III final is first and foremost on their collective minds as they enter the season.

Senior Tyler Winkowski and sophomore Jason Bant are in the relief mix as well. Winkowski is also battling for a spot in left field with Sean Nocera, Gus Setteducato and Matt Cronson, while Bant could see time in the infield. Senior Doug Wetzel returns to right field this season after supplying one clutch hit after another from the bottom of the order last season while hitting .324 and contributing 16 RBI.

“Yea, we got something to prove, said Dombroski. “Obviously if we don’t get there (state championship) it’s a lost season for us. We just got to go out and give it our all every single time and we believe if we do that we can do big things this year. The target’s huge on our backs and we can’t go out and take anyone lightly because if we do, that may be the game that we lose that could hurt us in the end. We just have to go out and prove we’re the No. 1 team in the Shore. The Monmouth University-bound Dombroski, who went 8-1 with a 0.54 ERA while striking out 71 batters in 64.2 innings pitched, heads up a pitching staff that is second to none in the Shore this season and has the raw talent to carry this team all the way to a state championship. “Yea, most likely, Dombroski said when asked if the pitching staff looks to be the strength of the team. “We’re all returning guys so that’s good and we have a bunch of experience to gets us where we want to go; should be a good season. Joining the big lefty in the starting rotation are senior right-handers Grant Shulman and Ryan Napolitano and senior left-hander Tanner Powers.

David Howarth is back behind the plate this season after battling through injuries last season as a junior. He’s healthy now which is a big plus for the Crimson Knights and he’ll hit in the middle of the order. Nocera, who hit .417 in a limited role last season, will spell Howarth behind the plate to keep him fresh. Napolitano was a second-team All-Shore selection after going 7-1 with a 2.89 ERA with 54 K’s in 46 innings pitched. Napolitano will fill in at second base until Dylan Richey, who has just been cleared to resume workouts and is working himself into baseball shape, is set to go. Richey started at shortstop last season hovering around the .300 mark at the plate with 25 runs scored, 12 stolen bases and 14 base on balls.

Shulman, also a standout third baseman and first-team All-Shore pick, posted a 5-1 record and 2.17 ERA with 54 strikeouts in 46 innings pitched. He played a flawless hot corner while hitting .449 with three homers, seven doubles, two triples and 26 RBI.

Last year’s starting second baseman, Johnny Volpe, slides over to shortstop until Richey returns. Richey and Volpe

Powers is the No. 4 starter and a valuable relief pitcher as well, who posted a stingy 1.07 ERA last season when

were the table setters at the top of the order last season for Shulman and Teddy Sharkey while also making up one of the deadliest double-play combinations in the Shore.

Seniors John Iradi and Drew Tidwell will contribute off the bench. If Wall can steer clear of injuries, the only thing that can stop this team is themselves. All the pieces are in place and the loot is there for the taking. It’s your classic championship-or-bust season for Wall and nothing less will do. “Every day, said Dombroski when asked if the team talks about about winning that championship. “That’s our ultimate goal. We all want that so bad. Most of us are seniors and it’s our last high school season, so we just want to go out there and win it all.

DEPTH HAS FREEHOLD TOWNSHIP EAGER TO START SEASON

GRIFFINS ON MISSION TO FINISH WHAT THEY STARTED By Eric Braun

By Eric Braun

FREEHOLD – The Freehold Township softball team has been on a great run over the past three seasons and this year seems to be no different. Coming off a 2018 campaign that saw the Patriots make a run at the NJSIAA Central Jersey Group IV tournament before falling to Middletown South, 9-8, and ending their season with a record of 16-6 (9-3 in A North). Coach Mike Stoia, who is in his third season at the helm, enters the season with a record of 32-14. He throws out a diverse lineup this season with six seniors, nine juniors, two sophomores and two freshmen. Like any good coach, Stoia knows how important it is to have great assistant coaches. Beth English (former Wall standout and Freehold head coach) has been instrumental working with the infield. Christian Erbig, a former assistant to his father at Middletown South and then a head coach at Manalapan, is responsible for working with the outfield. “Our success over the past couple of years is because of an influx of talent and getting people to play to their full potential while meshing together,” said Stoia. This senior class is integral to building the success that Freehold Township has become and continues to build for the future. Kiersten Withstandley highlighted a strong freshman class four years ago, when a lot of freshmen contributed on varsity and gained experience. The following year, the current juniors showed up and added even more depth to the program. That was the year Stoia took over and put his own mark on the program, and since then the Patriots have bought in and are once again eager to make a deep run. The team continues to jell together and feed off each others’ strengths. A key reason for their success is the great leadership and coaching which has allowed the team to break down practices and work more on fundamentals with position players working in smaller groups. This year the Patriots have their deepest group under Stoia. The only area they will need to fill is at first base and according to Stoia, they have plenty of girls competing for that spot. Gia McKnight (15-6, 97 strikeouts) leads a strong pitching staff with an excellent defense behind her.

Offensively Freehold returns some solid bats from last season with Withstandley (.324 BA, 11 RBI, 5 doubles), senior Lauren Andersen (.259 BA, 10 RBI, 16 runs scored), senior Kayla Loges (.254 BA, 17 RBI), Junior Zoey Valentino (.515 BA, 45 RBI, and 10 home runs), junior Lauren Pscolka (.514 BA, 21 RBI, 4 home runs, 37 hits) and junior Kristen Pagliaro (.468 BA, 10 RBI, 5 doubles). Also making contributions for the Patriots this season will be senior Megan Grimshaw who will be competing for time at first base, junior Ashley Singer also competing for first base, junior Emily Madonia, sophomore Catherin Papa battling for the No. 2 pitching spot, sophomore Kristen Lee competing for outfield time, freshman Nicole Lusnia also battling for No. 2 pitching spot, and freshman Lila Williams starting at third base. Valentino has added to the Freehold Township record books with five runs batted in already this season, to own the career record currently at 69 She also owns the single-season RBI record with at 45, and single-season (10) and career (14) home run records. Looking to add personal milestones this season will be Withstandley (11 hits shy of 100), Lauren Pscolka (32 hits shy of 100) and Valentino (29 hits shy of 100). Freehold Township competes in the very competitive A North division with Middletown South, Howell, Manalapan, Freehold Borough, Marlboro and Long Branch. The Patriots stumbled out of the gates, losing their season opener to Manalapan, 11-10, despite battling back to take a 10-8 lead into the sixth before falling to the Braves. Valentino hit two home runs and drove in four runs, while Withstandley went 3 for 5 with a double and a home run, two runs batted in and three runs scored. The Patriots evened their record at 1-1 two days later with a 10-7 win over Marlboro. Loges went 3 for 5 with two runs batted in. Williams had two runs batted in and Pscolka hit her first home run of the season. Freehold Township’s upcoming schedule includes games against Howell (April 10), Matawan (April 13), Freehold Borough (April 16) and Old Bridge (April 18).

TOMS RIVER — There are many teams that would be thrilled with a Shore Conference Tournament championship, division title and a 30-1 record. Not many teams are built the way the Donovan Catholic Griffins are. Last season the Griffins outscored the majority of their opponents by double digits, but ultimately fell one game shy of their perfect season. This season they want to close out as state champions. Last season, the Griffins faced Saint John Vianney in the South Jersey Non-Public A final and fell to the Lancers, 2-0, for their lone loss of the season. That day, the Griffins uncharacteristically only had three hits. Rather than take the season as a failure, Donovan bounced back four days later against the same Lancers squad and flipped the script, this time in the Shore Conference Tournament final, using a barrage of power in their seven-run first inning enroute to a 13-4 victory. This season the Griffins return three first-team All-State players in junior infielder Karina Gaskins, and junior outfielders Jayda Kearney and Kayla Roncin. The trio — with Gaskins (.602 BA, 45 runs scored, 65 RBI, 10 doubles, 18 HR), Kearney (.598 BA, 49 runs scored, 44 RBI, 12 HR) and Roncin (.549 BA, 49 runs scored, 36 RBI, 11 doubles) — were an opposing pitcher’s nightmare. They also return second-team All-State senior lefty pitching sensation Lindsay Nelson, who led all pitchers in New Jersey with 22 wins. Donovan Catholic enters the season as the top team in the Shore Conference as well as the number one team in the state. This is a high praise for the small private school from Toms River, but one that they have truly earned. With the majority of their starting lineup from a year ago still intact, the Griffins will look to defend their Shore Conference Tournament title as well as look to capture the elusive NJSIAA Non-Public A title. “For us seniors we have come a long way and came up short the past couple of years, our biggest goal is to win it all and time to take it home,” said Nelson when asked about their goals for this season. A lot of what makes Donovan Catholic tick is the leadership and drive they get from head coach Debbie Schwartz. Schwartz came over from a powerhouse in Toms River East and brought her same drive and love for the game and her players to Donovan Catholic, which can be seen in the toughness and passion with which the

Griffins have played the past several years. This senior class entered with limited numbers as freshmen and has now built a powerhouse for years to come. “Playing for Coach has been great, she sets the tone for us and there is no let down,” added Gaskins. “She is a big part of us all coming together as a family and the main reason we all gel so well together and have built a sisterhood.” Adding to the depth of an already powerful lineup, Donovan Catholic welcomed back Tori Federico who missed all of last season due to surgery for a torn labrum. The junior wasted no time getting back into the swing of things when she stepped to the plate in the second inning of the season opener and crushed a grand slam to dead center field, as the Griffins jumped on Jackson Liberty for 10 runs in the inning enroute to a 17-7 victory. Roncin belted three hits, including the 100th of her career and Kearney added four hits of her own, the last one giving her 100 for her career. Reigning 2018 NJSIAA Player of The Year Gaskins finished opening day with four hits, a solo home run and four RBI. Two days later, the Griffins traveled to Point Pleasant Borough to take on the Panthers and the onslaught continued. Federico once again powered the offense, this time in the first inning with another grand slam on the young season. Donovan Catholic erupted for 10 runs in the first inning and defeated the Panthers in four innings, 19-1. Roncin added three more hits, including two doubles, with three runs batted in. Nelson pitched three innings for the win, striking out four and allowing no runs on one hit. Donovan Catholic is participating in the National Fastpitch Coaches Association Tournament. All of the top five teams in the NJ.com preseason Top 20 will be competing, as well as nine of the top 11 teams in those rankings, with the potential for some big semifinal matchups between the top two teams and the third- and fourth-seeded teams in their respective groups. Donovan Catholic’s schedule this year has some big names on it which will help them prepare for the postseason tournaments. In addition to the NFCA Tournament where the Griffins play Lodi Immaculate and then possibly Saint John Vianney, they face Rancocas Valley, Northern Burlington, Calvary Christian and Mount Saint Dominic this month.

WITH HIGH EXPECTATIONS HEAPED UPON THEM, POWERFUL JACKSON LIBERTY NOT FAZED By Mike Ready

JACKSON – Jackson Liberty has reached the NJSIAA Central Jersey Group III semifinals in each of the past two seasons only to come up short both times with this current group of standout seniors leading the way.

more power out of the lineup this season. “We pretty much bring back everyone from a team that hit 28 home runs last year. So it would be nice to see some balls fly out of the yard for sure.” Senior cleanup hitter Charlie Rudderow is back in left field after scoring 30 runs a year ago while driving in 26 runs.

The Lions, who are dealing with through-the-roof expectations entering this season, boast one, if not the, most explosive lineups in the Shore Conference along with enough quality pitching to finish off the job they started four years ago.

Sophomore Dan Keenan is the only newcomer to the starting lineup at designated hitter, and he’ll also see time on the mound, as will sophomore Carl Barth, who will likely start at first base when senior pitcher Kevin Ritz is starting.

They’ll head into the season is search of the program’s first state title in the school’s comparatively short 14-year history.

The right-handed Ritz and senior righty Nick DeCarlo are at the top of the pitching rotation after some nice production in 2018.

“We won our division last year and had a good run in the state tournament two years in a row,” said Jackson Liberty head coach Jim Rankin. “I get the sense that this group of seniors, being that it is their last goaround, are hungry – they’re tired of being close, tired of knocking on the door. We want to go through that door – bust it open. “Certainly there’s high expectations heading into this season and it definitely means a lot to these guys, but I don’t want to attach any, have to do this, have to do that, to the season because then you start putting pressure on yourself. We’re just taking one day at a time and letting the chips fall where they may. And if a state championship is in the cards late in the season that would be awesome. That’s obviously the grand goal but it’s way too early to start talking titles and championships. Our first goal is always to take care of the division,” continued Rankin. Jackson Liberty runs out all but one player from last season’s starting lineup and two of its top three pitchers, including Wagner-bound and first-team All-Shore selection David Melfi, who took the Shore Conference by storm a year ago. The senior catcher and number No. 3 batter hit .457 with 28 RBI, 37 hits, 32 runs scored and tied for second in the Shore with seven home runs, first among catchers. His seven homers, 12 doubles and one triple translated into a .889 slugging percentage, which was third highest in the Shore. The Lions are loaded and Melfi’s just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the offensive fire-power they trot out onto the field each game. Third-team All-Shore selection and leadoff batter Connor Keenan is back in center field after smacking 10 extra base hits, including six doubles, two triples and two home runs for a .648 slugging percentage a year ago while hitting for a .423 average with 26 runs scored. “David and Connor are the two guys that this team looks up to the most,” said Rankin when asked about team leadership. “They are the lead-byexample type of guys. They work hard and do everything you ask them to

DeCarlo went 5-0 with a 1.99 ERA, striking out 39 batters in 31.2 innings pitched while only walking 14 on the way to posting an outstanding 0.85 WHIP. In 36 innings pitched, Ritz struck out 31 batters allowing just 12 earned runs for a 2.33 ERA.

do as a coach. They’re sprint on-and-off the field guys. They’re not rah-rah guys but when they do decide to speak up, our guys know they better listen up and focus.” Another returning slugger, junior third baseman Shane Hickey, was a second-team All-Shore pick after producing a batting average over .400 for the second straight year hitting .409 with six homers, 27 RBI, 31 runs scored and a .682 slugging percentage. He’ll bat in the two hole in the lineup. Senior right fielder and No. 5 hitter Scott Wierciszewski posted a team-high 31 RBI last season while averaging .390 at the plate with 26 runs scored, six doubles and three homers for a .584 slugging percentage. Brandon Kinsman moves to second base this season following a stellar sophomore campaign in which he homered in three straight games at one point and posted a .657 slugging percentage in 46 at bats.

Rankin will mix and match his starters and relievers so you may see DeCarlo and Ritz entering later in the game one day then start the next. This, in an effort to limit their pitch counts to keep their arms fresh, is similar to what the Tampa Bay Rays have been doing the last two years. It also gives Rankin flexibility to utilize his two top pitchers in situations where he feels they’re needed most. “My philosophy regarding Nick and Kevin is that we have to have them available in games as much as possible – they’re our best, most experienced guys,” said Rankin. “The more they’re available late in games – in the most meaningful innings – the better it is for us. If I’m going to gamble with a less experienced guy, I’m going to gamble early counting on our offense to score a couple runs. We’re not afraid to go down early knowing, we think, that our offense is going to score. And if I know I’m turning the ball over later to a Nick DeCarlo or to a Kevin Ritz, I like our odds; I like those matchups.” So, Barth and Keenan, along with juniors Tim Duffy and Ryan Gallacher, are all part of a six-man rotation that can either start or relieve on any given day.

Returning senior shortstop Alex Torres not only flashed his glove last season but showed his power potential blasting three round-trips last year.

Junior outfielder/catcher Gavin Maarberg and middle infielders sophomore Jake Hickman and senior Cole Watanabe provide depth off the bench.

If you’re keeping score, that’s 24 home runs by six players and if you add in another four hit by various players, that pushes the number to 28 – monster numbers that could possibly rise to unprecedented levels this season.

“I think they’re handling their business very well right now,” said Rankin. “We’re very senior heavy with seven seniors retuning with all having two or three years of varsity experience already underneath their belts. They’re kind of going about things in a very business-like manner – never getting too high or too low. I know it’s early in the season but I like where our head’s at now as long as we stay level headed and especially stay humble.”

“Well yea, with the guys we have coming back and with the experience they have, definitely for sure,” said Rankin when asked if we should expect even

FOR RED BANK CATHOLIC, WINNING IS TRADITION ACE BELL HAS MIDD PRIMED FOR ANOTH By Mike Ready

RED BANK – The Caseys regularly produce top 10 teams despite having to often replace a number of their star players from the previous year and this season will be no different.

just eight earned runs for a sparkling 2.07 ERA and 1.07 WHIP.

John Nimeth – a junior righty – went 4-2 a year ago in 33 IP with a team-low 1.70 ERA to give the Caseys another experienced starter.

Red Bank Catholic doesn’t rebuild, they restock from a rich talent pool that supplies their roster with some of the best talent in the Shore Conference year after year.

Then there’s senior righthander Vincent Bianchi, who is already committed to St. John’s University next season. Bianchi – a standout shortstop when not on the mound – hit .333 with nine doubles, two triples, one home run and 14 RBI.

They also boast one of the most experienced coaching staffs in the Shore Conference, including Buddy Hausman, who is entering his 12th season as head coach with 212 wins under his belt; assistant coach Ted Jarmusz, who spent 27 seasons as head coach at Monmouth Regional where he compiled 447 wins; and Joey Pingitore, who was an assistant at Monmouth during Jarmusz’s entire tenure.

Bianchi – an All-Division selection – will be counted on to pick up some of the slack at the plate until Glancy returns and with his arm now 100 percent, expectations are that he’ll return to the form he flashed on the mound as a sophomore.

A year ago, the Caseys won their second straight Monmouth County Tournament before suffering early exits in both the Shore Conference Tournament and Non-Public A South Tournament as favorites, and that’s still fresh in their minds. “We got eliminated pretty early last year in the SCT so we want to come back and make it all the way,” said senior centerfielder David Glancy, who was a first-team All-Shore selection a year ago but is currently shelved with a broken hamate bone in his left wrist that will keep him out of action for another three to four weeks. “States too, we came up short in a game we should’ve won that ended our season but we have a lot of guys back and we just want to win it all.” Glancy had a breakout season in 2018 when he hit .360 with seven home runs, 11 doubles, three triples and 27 RBI with an OBP of .495 and a slugging percentage of .797. “I know everyone else on my team can pick me up and fill the job,” said Glancy of his time on the injury list. “They’re all capable of it. We all worked so hard in the off season to get to this point and I don’t think anything can stop us now. When I

come back I just want to keep it rolling with the team and try to do my best to contribute.”

Second baseman Alex Gonzalez will assume Glancy’s leadoff spot in the lineup after putting together an excellent junior campaign when he laced 28 hits for a .337 average with 12 RBI.

In his absence, the Caseys needed to shuffle the outfield a bit with two newcomers. Sophomore Anthony Borriello – originally slated to start in left field – will shift to Glancy’s spot in center with senior Ray Martinis taking over in left field.

Chris Sparber is back behind the plate where he distinguished himself by the way he handled pitchers and in the batter’s box as well last year as a sophomore. He hit a solid .348 and displayed some power as he drilled three triples and a homer.

Senior Ryan O’Hara will start in right field and is also penciled in as a starting/relief pitcher where he unveiled a blazing fastball last season. At the plate he has some untapped power hitting three home runs a year ago while driving in 16 runs and those numbers should go up substantially this season.

At first base, Jack Scrivanic cracked the lineup as a sophomore a year ago and is back there as a starter this season. Another player with power after hitting three home runs and driving in 15, he gives the Caseys five players with legitimate home-run power.

Although the Caseys must replace two standout starters, O’Hara is part of a strong starting rotation that will take the mound this season.

“Everything honestly, mostly our hitting and pitching,” said Glancy when asked what he thought the strengths of the team were. “Our defense is pretty good too – our middle infield – everywhere, we’re just a solid team all-around.

Sophomore Shane Panzini came on strong last season after finding a spot in the starting rotation and finished throwing 27 innings, allowing

MIDDLETOWN – Last season Middletown North softball captured the North Jersey Section 2 Group III title with 4-1 victory over Governor Livingston, and head into this season back in a deep Central Jersey Group III and realigned into the Shore Conference B North division. Middletown North did lose a lot of firepower from last season due to graduation, but the one constant from their title run is their ace in the circle, senior Malori Bell. Bell finished 2018 as a first-team All-State hurler who won 21 games and struck out 312, as well as batted .427 with 33 RBI. “We are super excited to see what the season has in store for us. We did lose a lot with the seniors that graduated last season but with the seniors we have this year and upperclassmen, we see a lot of great potential for the season,” said Bell of the upcoming season. Sharing the heavy load of getting the Lions another state title are senior Adrian Cerbo who finished last season an All-Group III second-team selection and senior Cara McNulty. Cerbo finished last season with a .348 batting average, 22 RBI and 24 runs scored. McNulty finished with a .380 batting average, 23 RBI and 29 runs scored. “2019 is going to be another big year for us and we are looking forward to getting the season started to see where we are at,” added Cerbo. 2018 was a great run the Lions, who went 25-6 with four players batting over .400 and eight players in double figures for RBI. But it was the hot arm of Bell that paved the way for Middletown North to make their deep run in the NJSIAA Tournament and will look to their ace once again this season. The righty hurler threw an impressive 186 innings last season and allowed just 39 earned runs and 43 walks. Middletown North will get their chance early to prove themselves as they take on a tough division schedule that includes two games against Saint

“Just be consistent, no errors, everyone do their job and we should be all right,” added Glancy.

DLETOWN NORTH HUNT, DITULLIO AND HER GREAT SEASON ESCANDON KEYS TO John Vianney, Colts Neck, Matawan, Wall, Ocean, Neptune and Red Bank Regional. The game most are looking forward to as a barometer to see where they are is against the Lancers on April 16. There is no disrespect to the other teams, but the team knows SJV is the team to beat. The Lions have jumped out to a quick start with back-to-back, no-hit shutout wins for Bell. Middletown North opened the season against Neptune and made quick work of the Scarlet Fliers winning, 14-0, on 17 hits and four-RBI performances from senior Jacey Tammaro and sophomore Ava Turner. McNulty added three hits, while Bell, Ashley Kofsky and Turner each added two hits. But it was Bell who took the headlines with her opening-day completegame no-hit shutout, which included 13 K’s, while allowing just one base runner on a walk. Next up was a pitcher’s duel against Matawan and sophomore Alyssa Eimont who won 14 games as a freshman. The game did not disappoint, as the two aces combined for 24 strikeouts and just one earned run, as Middletown North topped the Huskies, 3-0. Bell finished with her second no-hitter – this time a perfect game – on 14 strikeouts over seven innings. Though Middletown North was held to just seven hits, they scratched out a run per inning over the first three innings. It was Turner once again with the hot bat, driving in two runs. Middletown has already seen that they are going to have to manufacture runs from all over their lineup and use small ball to win the tight games. Singles, steals, walks and smart plate appearances will be the game plan, according to head coach Chris Hoffman, who believes this team can stay focused and hungry. The Lions have a tough April schedule including non-conference games against Northern Burlington, Livingston and Westfield.

CHRISTIAN BROTHERS ACADEMY’S 2019 SUCCESS By Mike Ready

LINCROFT – Last season, CBA was on a roll winning 13 straight games before losing to Red Bank Catholic in the Monmouth Conference Tournament semifinals. Following that loss, they got back on track winning their next three games before the roof caved in on them and they lost their final three. A one-run loss to Point Pleasant Boro in the Shore Conference Tournament Round of 16 as the No. 1 seed and a 4-1 loss to Notre Dame in the South Jersey Non-Public A quarterfinals – again as the top-seed – unceremoniously ended their season. Injuries plagued the Colts in the latter part of the season and played a significant role in their late-season swoon. Three of their top players, including this year’s starting shortstop Tommy Ditullio, struggled playing through their injuries and were never really the same late in the season. Ditullio will attempt to bounce back this season and regain the form that made him an All-Shore selection as a sophomore in 2017 and a Bryant University commit. “Injuries aside, our main problem last year was we struggled to get runs across the board,” said All-Shore first baseman/pitcher Braedin Hunt, who certainly did his part batting .453 with five doubles, three home runs, 12 runs scored and 19 RBI while posting a .554 OBP and .717 slugging percentage. “This year we’ve been hitting and seeing the ball a lot better and we’re a better hitting team overall. So I think moving forward in big games and tournaments we’re going to contribute better and take some stress off our pitchers.” Hunt, who’s verbally committed to Rutgers, is one of those pitchers who, along with senior lefty Joe Escandon, give the Colts two dynamic starters at the top of their rotation. A year ago he posted a sparkling 1.17 ERA in 18 innings pitched finishing with a 2-0 record. If he can get can cut down on his walks (14) he has the potential to be one of the best right-handers in the Shore. “We’re looking pretty good actually,” said Hunt when asked how the preseason went. “We have a lot of key newcomers who are stepping up to the plate and contributing the way we need them to. And we have a variety of guys that are going to step up and have the captain role and take charge of the team this year.” Escandon is penciled in as the No. 1 starter after a season that saw him garner coaches’ All-Shore honors following a 5-0 season with 39 strikeouts in 33 IP while posting a 1.70 ERA and 1.18 WHIP. “I think we’re looking good.” said Escandon, who has been impressed with the Colts pitching staff so far this spring. “We have a number of guys that can fill key roles and our pitching has a chance to be a strength of the team.” Junior newcomer and Northeastern University-commit Pat Riley looks to be the

No. 3 starter with senior lefty Evan Mahns stepping into a starting role as the fourth starter. Junior Mason Wolfe and senior Anthony Pillari are slated for middle relief and closing duties while junior right-hander Declan Hoverter and senior righty C.J. Shekian are expected to provide pitching depth. Wolfe saw time behind the plate last year when he went 9-for-30 with nine RBI and gets the start there this season, but he also plays the outfield giving the Colts some maneuverability as Pillari can fill in behind the plate too. Senior Connor Baksh had just 15 plate appearances last season but two went for home runs while going 4-for-13 with a pair of walks and he gets the starting nod in right field. Anthony Celestre had a part-time role last season but will start in center field for the Colts this season after he went 4-for-19 with a triple and six walks a year ago. “Mason Wolfe our catcher, Connor Baksh and Anthony Celestre have all hit the ball really well this spring,” said Escandon. “Our team in general has all been getting a couple of hits a game. We’ve been putting a lot of runs across the board so it’s been helping our pitching out and it’s looking good for us this year.” A couple of newcomers round out the starting lineup with junior Ben Settino taking over in left field and junior Jason Arnott getting the starting nod at second base. “We’re doing really well, we’re just playing our game,” Hunt said. “We’re not trying to hit the ball out of the park every time up, we’re putting runners in motion, we’re getting the ball on the ground and just making things happen with our speed and just manufacturing runs. We can get a lot of movement on the bases and put some pressure on the other team’s defense.” “I think we’re capable of winning the Shore Conference and Monmouth County tournament championships and hopefully get a state title,” Escandon added. “I think with the group of guys we have this year we’re capable of doing that.”
