Foundation Has Their Foundation Laid Out For A Successful Football Season Foundation Academy football head coach Brad Lord challenged his staff and players to learn an entirely new offense this spring. The Lions, led by quarterback Henry Austad, made progress and it showed on the field Thursday night during a spring football game against Lake Highland Prep. “It’s a lot of timing,” Lord said after Lions defeated the Highlanders 30-0. “We were sloppy in the second quarter, but the first quarter looked really good. We’re a pretty big team for a smaller school.” Lord implemented a new spread offense, which gives the quarterback the option to run or pass the ball. “I’ve become more adept to the offense this spring,” said Austad, who tossed the ball 12 times for 87 yards and three touchdowns. “I’m able to tell everyone what they’re doing on offense.” Lord and his quarterback hopes to continue this progress into the fall. To do so, the Lions will travel to multiple football camps on the East Coast. “We’re taking 18 of our players on a van ride starting at UCF,” Lord said. “We’ll go to Furman, then Appalachian State. We go to Clemson for three days and then we’ll end at University of Florida.” Lord said this will help the team and staff grow and learn from one another during the summer. “When they come back ready for fall camp, they’re ready to go,” Lord said. “This team, for a small school, is very dedicated to football.” As Foundation Academy continues to add onto what was accomplished this spring, Lord hopes it translates into success come playoff time. “Our goal is to go deep this year,” Lord said. “We were one game away from getting to the big dance last year, so we have a lot of guys that that’s their goal.”

Spring Football Outing was very positive for Dr. Phillips If there is one thing that Dr. Phillips football coach Rodney Wells learned about his team Thursday night, it’s that the Panthers have depth — a lot of it. On the heels of an up-and-down 2018 season in which DP overcame a 1-4 start to make the state playoffs, the Panthers showcased a nice mix of newcomers and veterans in rallying past visiting Winter Park 28-21 in a spring game. DP, led by sophomore backup quarterback Joseph “Jo-Jo” Patti, freshman running back Rodney Wells Jr. and freshman wide receiver Jaydan Taylor, reeled off 21 unanswered points to win it. Six players in all had a hand in scoring for DP, which pushed around a rebuilding Wildcats team in the second half. Although DP made its comeback against Winter Park reserves, the Panthers’ wealth of talent was hard to ignore. “We gained some depth,” Wells said. “That’s what you want to do in this game. Our young guys got to play some football. We had a couple of guys out, but we played good football.” DP returns 11 starters, seven on offense, but lost more than 16 players to graduation. It showed it can compete even without a full roster. Wells said the Panthers were missing running back Brandon Fields, who was busy with baseball this spring, and big tight end Jackson Hodor but still played well. “We are a power running team,” Wells said. Wells’ son, Rodney Jr., may have earned himself some playing time this fall after rumbling for more than 85 yards and a TD. He had a 62-yard burst in the fourth quarter to set up a 2-yard TD run by Patti, who is the

cousin of former DP quarterback Nick Patti. And Rodney Jr. is listed as DP’s No. 3 running back on the depth chart. “He played very well, surprisingly,” Wells said of his son. Wells also was impressed by Patti, who came on in relief of starter Brenden Cyr and threw a nifty 73-yard TD strike to Taylor in the fourth quarter. Cyr threw a TD pass to Noah Scholfield in the second quarter. “The game was a little fast for him at first,” Wells said. “But then he settled down and he made some good throws, made some really good runs, good reads.” Now summer weightlifting awaits and the preparation for the fall. “We’ve got to get bigger, stronger and faster,” Wells said. “All the pieces are there. Again, we have a really good mix of old and young talent. We have good chemistry. Those guys love each other already. We’re much ahead of where we were last year.”

Olympia Wins Class 9A Regional Semifinals Strong pitching down the stretch in front of a capacity crowd Friday helped Olympia hold off host Lake Brantley for a 3-1 win in a Class 9A region semifinal. The Titans (22-5) advance to play at home Wednesday at 4 p.m. against Seminole (19-9) for the region championship. Olympia’s Jeslyn Whitehead and Seminole’s Matt Allan are the projected starters for that showdown. “If you would’ve told me we were going to hold these guys to one run tonight I wouldn’t of believed it,” said Olympia coach Chuck Schall. “For our guys to come out and get it done in this setting, I’m really proud of them.” Lake Brantley (21-7) posted eight runs against the Titans to claim the 9A, District 3 title when they last met on May 10. Olympia plated runs in the third and fourth innings this time around to break a 1-1 tie after the Patriots scored for the only time in the second inning.

Titan Kamaka drove in two runs and Brenden Riley added another RBI in the win for Olympia. Starting pitcher Josh Plasencia struck out 10 batters in five innings. Mitch Harding finished strong on the mound by striking out four over the final two innings, including three straight in the seventh. Lake Brantley batters went down in order in each of the final three innings.

Undefeated Winter Springs secured its spot in next week’s

Undefeated Winter Springs secured its spot in next week’s Class 8A state softball tournament with a 13-0 mercy-rule victory over Wellington in Palm Beach County on Friday night. The Bears (29-0) scored four runs in the third inning and eight in the fourth to blow the game open. Winning pitcher Aynslie Furbush limited the Wolverines (26-3) to two hits. “We were prepared and played hard,” Winter Springs coach Mark Huaman said. “We really executed well.” The Bears (29-0) will play Orange Park Oakleaf (25-4) at 4:05 p.m. on Thursday in Vero Beach. The Knights won 13-0 at East Ridge (22-8) in another five-run mercy-rule game. Furbush, a junior who is committed to Ole Miss, tossed a complete game with eight strikeouts. Winter Springs quickly opened the scoring in the first as Kaley Mudge hit a leadoff triple to center and scored on Briana Driscoll’s RBI single. The Bears offense was on display in a four-run third inning. After Wellington junior pitcher Kate DeSimone issued a leadoff walk, Mudge crushed a two-run home run to right to make it 3-0. Kennedi Gaton also ripped a two-run blast to left to

extend the lead to 5-0. The Wolverines had a runner in scoring position in the third, but failed to score. The Bears had seven consecutive batters reach base to begin the fifth against Schmidt and pulled away with an eight-run inning. The Wolverines defense committed two errors during the fifth. “It was the best team we have played against all season and they were undefeated for a reason,” Wellington coach Mark Boretti said. “They really can hit and they had a great pitcher.”

Windermere baseball edges Hagerty in region semifinal and Bishop Moore Advances Windermere senior pitcher Bryce Hubbart tossed a complete game and senior first baseman Carson Crossley drove in two runs Saturday afternoon to help lead the host Wolverines past Hagerty 3-2 in the FHSAA Class 8A, Region 3 semifinals. Hubbart allowed seven hits and struck out seven hitters during the outing, most notably striking out four batters in the final two innings. After allowing a run in the top of the first and encountering some turbulence in the fifth inning that caused Windermere to warm up teammate Palmer Bittick, Hubbart seemed to do his best pitching down the stretch. “I think when he sees us roll somebody over to the bullpen he gets a little [angry] and doesn’t want to come out of the game,” explained Wolverines head coach Eric Lassiter. “He’s a competitor, man.” With the win, Windermere (24-4) advances to Wednesday’s regional final, where the second-year program will face either Lakeland or George Jenkins. Against Hagerty, the Wolverines’ offense was led by Crossley, who drove in a run in the first and then hit a solo home run to right in the third, going 2-for-3 on the day. “That was an absolute bomb by the way. It was murdered,” Lassiter said of Crossley’s home run. “He’s been smashing balls for the last month-and-a-half.” Hagerty starter Jackson Grabsky went 2⅓ innings before the Huskies (23-5) went to the bullpen. Senior Vaughn Grissom, who also drove in his team’s first run, went the rest of the way on the mound without allowing further damage. For Windermere, the game carried added significance, as the upstart Wolverines saw their breakout inaugural season in 2018 end with a 5-0 loss to Hagerty in the regional quarterfinals. “The first time out here in the fall, our coach pulled us together and we were like, ‘Hey, we’re trying to get to this game [against Hagerty],’” Hubbart said. “We got it and we executed.” Now the second-year program, and particularly its seniors, will try to win once more to punch a ticket to Fort Myers for the Final Four. “I love these guys and I don’t want to go home yet,” Crossley said. Bishop Moore advances: After losing in the Class 5A Region 2 final last season, Bishop Moore will have a

chance to exorcise those demons after a 10-0 victory over Brooksville Central (7-22) in five innings on Saturday in the Region 2 semifinal. Blake D’Arville and Tommy Groom combined for the shutout, with D’Arville striking out five and giving up no hits or walks. Dom Scavone went 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBI while Kyle Mock and Dale Thomas each had solo home runs. Keller Eberly and McGwire Holbrook each went 2-for-3 with a double. The Hornets (21-7) will face the winner of the other semifinal between The Villages and Newberry on May 22. Elsewhere, The First Academy (20-8) played at Clearwater Calvary Christian (23-4) in a 4A region final on Saturday night.
