Faith Christian Lions Start Off Strong

by Logan Beardslee

ORLANDO - As the High School football 2016/17 season kicks off, the Faith Christian Lions came out with a strong away victory against the hosting team, St. John Lutheran Saints. The win moved the Lions to a (1-0) start on the season. With last season’s record being a disappointing 1-9 , the Lions appear to have already gotten off to a better start this season than they did the last. The Lions knew they had to improve their team dynamic for the fans. During the game against St. John Lutheran, The Lions focused on running the ball and it paid off. The Running Backs Dominik Johnson (sophomore), Zak Thomas (sophomore), Makai Burris (sophomore), and N. Henderson (junior) each got one of the four touchdowns scored for Faith Christian. The defense also helped, keeping the Saints at 20 points to help keep the win in sight.

Makai Burris had the most carries on the ball out of the four receivers, having carried the ball 17

times throughout the game with an average of 4.3 yards per carry and a total of 73 yards. The offense found him to be a key player, helping them win the game. While the opposing team

was unable to keep him from gaining yards, they did in fact hold him to only one touchdown on the night. With the team celebrating their season opener win they will have to face off against the International Community Comets (Winter Garden FL), who lost 41-0 to the Bishop McLaughlin Catholic Hurricanes, giving up four rushing touchdowns and two receiving touchdowns, starting their season off at (0-1). If the Comets can’t contain the running offense of the Lions it seems as if the Lions have a clear shot to get yet another win and take their season to a (2-0) record, which will already be an improvement from last season’s losing record, as they recorded just one win the whole season.

Dr. Phillips Route Lake Mary

by Greyson Everidge

DR. PHILLIPS – The Dr. Phillips Panthers, led by star quarterback Marvin Washington, won their second game of the season this past week, defeating Lake Mary (0-2) by a score of 41-7. The Panthers were solid both offensively and defensively, a key for them this season has they look to make the district play-offs this year for a tenth consecutive year. The first quarter saw Dr. Phillips get just one touchdown, where they would move into the second quarter to score three touchdowns and the third quarter to score two. The fourth quarter was dry for the Panthers, as they closed out the game conceding just one touchdown to Lake Mary in the third quarter.

The game, which was WFTV’s game of the week, saw two plays, one from either team, make the Orlando Sentinels Top 10 Plays of the Week reel. Dr. Phillips came when Junior Braxton Clark intercepted the ball in his own end-zone, where he then ran the ball 99 yards, a new school record, for the touchdown. Defensively, Dylan Meeks, University of Nebraska commit Robert Porcher IV, North Carolina State commit Nick Smith, and juniors Christian Williams, Joe Gulla, and Tanner Ingle held up to limit Lake Mary to one touchdown. University of Central Florida commit Marvin Washington was instrumental at quarterback, hitting passes left and right to keep the play moving

forward. Washington, who accounted for 1,027 yards and 17 touchdowns last season has gotten off to a good start this season, solidifying why he is a top division one commit in the Central Florida area. The Panthers next game will come against the West Orange Warriors (1-1), who sit with a loss and a win so far this season after losing last week’s match to Winter Park (1-1) 50-14. The game is against their bitter rivals for the Battle of the Crate, something which picks up a good amount of attention among football fans for its usual intensity and good play. The game is played at Dr. Phillips, giving them every incentive to walk away with the win, and the crate no less.

Olympia wins a big game against East River by Mike Daniel

This was a nail bitter to the end. Both teams were matched up very well. East River came out and scored the first touchdown against the Olympia Titians. The Titians answered with their own touchdown and that’s when the game got interesting. The Wolfs came back and scored on a running play down the middle but failed to convert on their extra point. East River held Olympia after four downs. Then the game took a turn for the Titans as they recovered an interception and scored three plays later. Being down 12-13, Coach Hayes made a gutsy call and went for the two point conversion. Joe Milton connected with Jordan Underwood and was on the receiving end of a two point conversion thrown by Jake Clarkson to give the Titans a 14-13 lead in the middle of the 4th. The Titans played stellar defense down the stretch to hold on to the win and is now 1-1 on the season. The Titans will host Colonial on Friday, Sept. 9th at 7pm.

Apopka Football Cruise Past Ocoee by Greyson Everidge

APOPKA – The Apopka Blue Darters, known for their strong football team they field year after year, once again started a new season strong, this time defeating the Ocoee Knights by a score of 62-7. Throughout the game, the Blue Darters rushed hard, breaking through for touchdown after touchdown. This sight brings back good memories from two and four years ago, when Apopka won state championships in 2012 and 2014 respectively. They hope to have a better season than last years, mind you they still went 10-2, with both losses coming to rivals West Orange. Returning seniors Demetri Burch and Deshawn Massey were utilized well at the wings, while the defense played more than its part, something they will want to work on after having allowed 20 or more points four times in the 2016/17 year. Burch showed just why he committed to the University of South Florida among offers from teams like Kentucky and West Virginia. Massey, who was named to the 8A All-State team last season as a consistent 1,000yard rusher tore up the defense of the Knights, who were overwhelmed by

the waves of attacks rolling in from Apopka. Senior safety Dimetri King and junior Kamron Williams tackled well, while linebacker David Britzius held up the defensive line. With a score of 50-7 at half, Apopka could use some players who wouldn’t normally get much playing time. Jackson Darlington, third son of Head Coach Richard Darlington, lined up a true freshman wide receiver, combining for 50 yards and a touchdown catch. This all leads up to a week 4 matchup against Dr. Phillips, and a week 6 trip to longtime rivals West Orange. However, the Blue Darters have to focus on their next closest game, against Edgewater (0-1) on September 2nd. Apopka make the trip to the Eagles home field, where they will play a Edgewater team who were battered by Bishop Moore by a score of 42-6. Although not likely, the Blue Darters will work hard to make sure they don’t slip us against Edgewater so that they can move to (2-0) on the season, hopefully with positives to take away from both matches.

Lake Highland Prep improved to 2-0 without taking the field on Friday night. The Highlanders accepted a forfeit victory over Marco Island Academy, which did not make the trip to Orlando. Highlanders coach Cameron Duke said the Southwest Florida school felt it was not safe to make the trip and opted to forfeit rather than reschedule the game. Due to adverse field conditions at Boone, the Braves moved their Friday night home game against Wekiva to the Mustangs’ home field. But it won’t kick off at 7 as scheduled. Fans were asked to exit the stands with the game under a lightning delay. Lake County cancelled or postponed all of its Friday high school football games due to weather and field conditions created by Tropical Storm’s Hermine’s early-morning run through Florida’s Panhandle. A number of schools shifted games to Saturday, but most stuck with Friday night football and held out hope that fields would not be underwater. The Saturday slate includes Leesburg at Eustis at 10 a.m., Deltona at Trinity Prep at 11, and Harmony at Gateway at noon. Those games join five other matchups set for Saturday: Ocala St. John at Wildwood (10 a.m.), Ocala Christian at Mount Dora Christian (11), Port Orange Atlantic at Palm Coast Matanzas (11), Jacksonville Bishop Snyder vs. First Academy-Leesburg (2) at the Sleepy Hollow Recreation Complex, and Crescent City at The Villages (7).

Bishop Moore Football Bury Edgewater

by Greyson Everidge

ORLANDO – The Bishop Moore Hornets, fresh off of a 5A State Championship, blew away Edgewater High in the opening game of the season. The game which was played at Edgewater High School, saw Bishop Moore run with a 42-6 win, giving them a solid base to make another bid for a State Championship. The win included plays from all the star players, relatively inexperienced players seeing as Bishop Moore graduated nearly two dozen seniors from the roster which won that class 5A State Championship. The first bit of action came against class 8A opponents Dr. Phillips, a program widely considered one of the best in Central Florida, and one who most 5A opponents couldn’t even compete with.

eventually rallied to win 21-14, but it wasn’t for a lack of effort on the part of the Hornets. The younger players, and those who are seniors but saw After leading 7-0 at half, the Panthers little game time last year, more

than held their own in both that spring game against Dr. Phillips and the opening game of the season played last week. Among these is incoming Junior Trillion Coles, who rushed for 53 yards and a touchdown in the 2015 State Championship match. Senior Army commit Joe Wallace, and senior University of Notre Dame commit Johnathan MacCollister helped lead the team to an opening day victory, dominating play on both defensive and offensive sides of the field. Head Coach Matt Hendrick knows how to win games, and strategy prevailed against Edgewater. Bishop Moore’s next game will come against Lyman (1-0) at Lyman, where a strong defensive game will be needed for the Hornets, after Lyman shutout Citrus (0-1) 36-0 in their opening game of the 2016/17 season.

Winter Park Beat West Orange

by Mike Daniels

WINTER PARK- The first thing Jordan Pouncey said after Winter Park rolled past West Orange 5014 Friday night was, “Bet you didn’t know I could play running back.” He certainly made believers out of the West Orange defense.

Pouncey, a Notre Dame commit, showed why he is one of the topranked college prospects in the country, rushing for three straight touchdowns of 46, 45 and 58 yards to spark Winter Park (1-1) to the surprising road rout of West Orange (1-1), which was ranked No. 5 in the Sentinel’s Super 16.

“This week was the first week they worked me in at running back,” Pouncey said. “I haven’t played running back since elementary school and to go out there and score three touchdowns as a running back... I don’t even know what to say. Glory to God.

Burton had some difficulty in the rain, and a steady rush provided by John Coffee, Kevince Brown and Kyle Moss caused issues as well, but he still completed 17 of 28 passes for 218 yards and a touchdown. Two of his top targets were not suited up for the second straight week as NaQuan Renalds and Jurrod Cook sat out the contest due to suspension for school rules violations. Junior running back Zhantavious Winters had a big night while playing back-up to West Orange starter Darrian Williams. Winters had 66 yards on 12 carries to lead the Warriors. Williams had 49 yards and a touchdown on 14 carries. Burton’s top target was DaShaun Collins with five catches for 62 yards.

Pouncey, usually a receiver, lined up as running back for his flurry of TDs, which came on consecutive carries and covered a span of less than five minutes.

Pouncey ended up with 157 yards and the three TDs on five carries. Quarterback Cameron Legree had a busy night, rushing for 73 yards on 14 carries, and he added 48 passing yards, but the Wildcats didn’t need to throw it on this night.

Foundation Academy Volleyball Start Season Strong by Greyson Everidge

WINTER GARDEN – The Foundation Academy Volleyball team have started the 2016/17 season strong, winning three of the last four in perfect 3-0 sets. The momentum has carried on, taking the Lions on a three game winning streak before finally losing one to the First Academy. Sitting at (3-1) and (1-1) in the district, things are looking good.

Another clean sweep played out for the Lions in their second game, which was played against the International Community (0-3). The Lions swept them, too by scores of 25-16, 25-19, 25-18. Foundation Rachel Gomes hit 50% of her kills, giving her the highest kill percentage of the team on the night. The MVP award went to Lauren Miller.

The first game of the season came against the Central Florida Christian Academy (1-5). The Lions beat the Eagles 25-7 in the first set, and 25-12 in the second set. The third set ended 25-9 in favor of the Lions, giving them a perfect sweep on the match. The MVP of the match was awarded to Christina Rumbach, who displayed sportsmanship and great focus to help lead the Lions to an opening day victory.

Foundation once again got another clean sweep, beating Orlando Christian Prep (0-3), by a score of 3-0. The Lions pretty much dominated the whole match, though Orlando Christian gave Foundation a run for their money in the second set. Regardless, the Lions won 25-13, 25-20, and 25-7. With the win, Foundation moved to (3-0), on a three game winning streak. Christian Rumbach won the player of the match award for her second time so far this season.

The first loss of the new season came against The First Academy (TFA) (3-0), who swept the Lions 3-0. It wasn’t for a lack of effort on the part of Foundation, who gave TFA a good match. They lost the sets 26-24, 25-19, and 25-21. Foundation Academy play their next game against Real Life Christian Academy () on Tuesday of this week, and will look to move their record to a solid (4-1). Foundation Academy 3, Mount Dora Christian 0 Buzz: Lauren Miller had 17 kills and 15 digs for Foundation (5-1) in a 25-11, 27-25, 25-15 sweep. Ana Grace Williams added 12 kills and 9 digs.

The Lions need a charge from their upperclassman by Mike Daniels

The Foundation Lions Football team is much and knows how to win with his team. He better than their 0-2 record. Lead by a strong and his staff were not happy with the lack of Senior and Junior classes, they are lacking only the confidence they need to win the big game. The Lions are learning a new Delaware Wing T offense, which has not been perfected yet. In fact, it’s one of the most complexed offenses to run but, Coach Lord had done an amazing job preparing his team. Their offensive line is led by Sydal Barton, Jorden Boast and Eddie Loos. With precise offensive pulls off the offensive line, their third game will see an explosion of running. That is what will happen when the Delaware Wing T is in working order. Week three football will be the Lions biggest test to see if their offense will step up and charge into the season. This team has a real chance of turning their season around right now. Coach Brad Lord is a dedicated and exciting coach to watch. He’s a coach who knows talent

excitement from their players. Coach Lord has been looking for leadership on the field that can energize and inspire their team. Last week’s game against First Academy was disappointing. The players were not ready to play. This is very frustrating for any coach and his staff who work so hard to get their team ready for Friday Night Lights! The Lions have a solid defense with Lance Axson, Evan Fitzgibbon, Evan Thompson, Dillon Hall and Jaquare Patterson to name a few. We hope to see more of the defense making some bigger plays these next few weeks. One would think, that a team who has nine offensive and eight defensive players returned this season, this lions would be 2-0? We predict that the Lions will win against Carrollwood Day and get back on track to play Northside Christian.

Windermere Prep Wins Season Opener

by Logan Beardslee

WINDERMERE - The Windermere Prep Football team made a strong statement in their 2016/17 season opener, winning big by a score of 55-7 against the hosting team Boca Raton Christian Blazers. With the win they hope to have another good season like their 2015/16 (7-3) season, and with the win they move to (1-0) on the season. With an allaround outstanding performance from Windermere Prep their Running Back (RB) Ismael Cortes stood out and had a very good running game. He had four carries on the ball with a total of 75 rushing yards, and with those yards came 1 rushing touchdown to help led the team to a victory. Also helping the team achieve the win on the road was their defense that was and will continue to be a prominent force this season with senior Linebacker Mitch Darrow

(2014 defensive MVP and 2015 overall MVP), senior Defensive Back Robert Brand, and Mason Russell. All three showed a great performance with a combined 10 out 19 of the teams tackles that game.

With the Lakers knowing that they had a tough matchup against a team that made it to the semi-final’s of last season the Boca Raton Blazers they were ready for the challenge,

they put in a lot of practice before the season began. The Lakers showed what they had been doing during their team practices as they had a good display of football throughout the preseason, as well as their first regular season. With the Lakers having their first three games on the road the Windermere Prep Lakers will take a trip to the Village (Huston TX). It will be an opportunity to improve their record and overall game as the season gets underway. The Village’s won their first game against Legacy Prep Christian Academy by a score of 19-6, it will make the upcoming game between Windermere Prep and Legacy Prep a tough fight as both teams hope to move this season’s record to 2-0.

Celebration Wins With Seconds On The Clock Seniors Blaze Alldredge and Chris Knight came up huge in the final minutes Friday to help Celebration overcome a nine-point deficit in their season opener at Disney. The Storm scored two touchdowns with little more than two minutes to play to pull out a 28-23 win over Gulliver Prep at ESPN’s Wide World of Sports Complex. Alldredge caught a 16-yard pass from Knight in the corner of the end zone with 14 seconds remaining to cap off the comeback. “The biggest thing was the no-quit attitude throughout the whole game,” Celebration coach Joel Smeenge said. “They’ve been on the other end of that stick a few times around here and I think it was good for them to persevere through that and come out with the win.” Trailing 23-14, Knight dumped a pass to Willie Boyd on 2ndand-25 and watched as the senior went 53 yards down the visiting sideline to score with 2 minutes, 13 seconds remaining. Celebration then forced a three-and-out on the next possession when Alldredge initiated a sack when he laid out to trip up the Gulliver Prep quarterback from behind. Alldredge finsihed with six catches for 52 yards and two touchdowns while Knight went 16 of 34 passing for 216 yards with three touchdowns. Knight also rushed for 53 yards and a touchdown on 14 carries. The win came in Smeenge’s head coaching debut at Celebration. He was an assistant coach at Grapevine Faith Christian in Texas last year and spent 11 years in the NFL with the New Orleans Saints and Jacksonville Jaguars. Celebration was one of three area teams that opened the season at Disney last week. Evans defeated Coral Springs Taravella 34-20 earlier in the day and Colonial lost 40-21 to Colorado Monarch on Thursday. “We talked about it all week, that even though Disney’s right here in our back yard that it’s quite an experience for these kids,” Smeenge said. “With all the competition and the things that happened there, it was exciting. They really enjoyed it and they played up to their potential in response to it.”

Dr. Phillips Football Beat Wekiva

by Greyson Everidge

DR. PHILLIPS – The Dr. Phillips Panther’s football team won their opening game of the 2016/17 season, against a strong Wekiva team by a score of 28-7. Many strongpoints showed in the matchup, with key players turning up big to secure the first win in the season opener. Panther’s quarterback Marvin Washington is instrumental in the attack for Dr. Phillips, providing both penetrating passes and runs that split open opposing defenses to score touchdowns, controlling the game at all times from the center of the field. It’s no surprise why he’s committed to the University of Central Florida, and he showed just why he’s a top prospect

among college recruiters. Emare Hogan ran for a high total of allpurpose yards, something we’ve come to expect of him at this point in his high school football career. DJ Charles, senior, rushed for 70 yards in the spring game, a specialty which carried over into their matchup with the Mustangs.

who helped keep Wekiva to just one touchdown. Wekiva’s quarterback Trey Mcgee threw for 48 yards, while senior Jaylon Fair rushed for 120 yards, averaging 5.2 yards per play. Drake Dickens was the standout receiver for the Mustangs, catching for 23 yards.

Ocoee Football Look to Second Game of Season by Greyson Everidge

APOPKA – The Ocoee Knights (0-1), who typically field solid defensive teams, suffered a heavy loss to Apopka (1-0) High School on the opening day, losing 62-7 to the Blue Darters. Head Coach Ben Bullock and the team know how to play to their strengths, which they will no doubt turn to as the season goes on. Most teams in the State, let alone District, can hang with the Blue Darters of Apopka. Always one of the strongest teams around, Apopka has everything a state championship team needs to win titles. At the end of last season, the Knights sat behind both West Orange and Apopka in the district standings. After this loss, improvements will be made to make sure they hang around the top in the district seeding’s. The next test comes against Lake Nona (1-0) for the Knights, where they will look to beat a Lake Nona side who narrowly escaped with a win against Winter Park (0-1), by a score of 27-26. Using key line backers Lyston Barber and Johnny Matos, both who are seniors, will be key to mounting a win against Lake Nona. Junior safety’s Jarell Hyatt and Chris Benton will be instrumental for Ocoee, while the two quarterbacks Myles Holder and Jake Novello get things going on the attack for the Knights, something they failed to do against Apopka – scoring just one touchdown the whole game. Senior kicker Candido Worrell is accountable for making the field goals and extra points, something he hasn’t struggled with in the past. All of this leads up to a bigger match, with the Knights constantly looking forward to the Battle of the Shield against rivals West Orange, a match which will be a huge home game for the Knights at the end of the regular season on November 4th.

West Orange Win Big in First Game

by Greyson Everidge

WINTER GARDEN – The West Orange Warriors, who played Foundation Academy in their opening game of the 2016/17 season, won big against their Winter Garden rivals by a score of 36-3. The game which has been dubbed the “Battle for the Garden”, attracts football fans from both sides of Winter Garden every year.

the other side of the field for a 96 yard return. It was a great show of the speed from Jones, who nearly made it into the other end-zone for a touchdown play just before the end of the first half. West Orange entered the second half leading

22-0, with no sign of slowing up. Warrior kicker Andrew Brickweg did well on the night, making all 4 of the extra points he lined up for. “It was a good win and we are looking forward to a good rest of the season,” said Brickweg. “We’ve been working hard so it’s good to get a win on the opening day.” All this comes just a week after a pre-season victory which saw the Warriors defeat the same Osceola team who knocked them out of the State Semis the year before, a game which helped build confidence in the team which clearly carried over into their victory against the Foundation Academy Lions.

The Warriors, who made it all the way to the State Semifinals in the large class last year before losing to Osceola, started the new campaign on a high after dominating the game from start to finish. The only mishap came when Foundation kicker Brandon Barnes put a field goal on the board for the Lions. A minor fault in an otherwise perfect game, the Warriors moved to (1-0) on the season.

The Warriors next game will come against Winter Park (0-1) in another home game which sees them face a Wildcats side who suffered an opening day loss to Lake Nona (1-0) by a score of 27-26.

Among the standout players was West Orange player Tyler Jones, who intercepted the ball in the end zone, before then returning it to

International Community Comets off to a Rough Start by Logan Beardslee

WINTER PARK - Not all of the 2016/17 football teams had a great start to the new season. The International Community Comets had a successful sea-

son last year when they went (8-2). However, their first game against the Bishop McLaughlin Catholic Hurricanes didn’t go as planed, which saw them

lose in a devastating loss by a score of 41-0, starting the season off with a negative record of (0-1). It seems that the Comets weren’t able to hold off the Hurricanes running offense, letting in four rushing touchdowns and two receiving touchdowns. The first game showed that the International Community couldn’t get their heads straight, letting in 28 points in the first half, but as the game went into the second half the Comets tightened up and only allowed 13 points, but were unable to put any points on the board themselves. The head coach of the Comets brought in some outstanding players on each side of the ball. On defense the team now has Conner Dimauro with 5.5 recorded sacks last year and the second most tackles for the team. Zane Denslow had 39 solo tackles and four interceptions. Zak Caeners had 14 solo tackles during the 2015/16 season. Nate Spencer registered an impressive 40 tackles last year. With these players being incorporated into the team’s lineup, the Comets should be back on their feet and be able to keep points off the board for opposing teams. On the offensive side of the team, players that returned such as Jarret Conkling passed for 15 touchdowns and rushed over the 1,000-yard mark. With their next game coming up on the 2nd of September against the Faith Christian Lions(1-0), a team who ran the ball for four out of four touchdowns and won 30-20 against St. John Lutheran Saints. It will be a challenging game for the Comets as they are struggling with defending the running game, but they are putting in the practice to hopefully get their first win and bring their season to an even 1-1.
