Championing Performance Anxiety
by Dr. Christopher Cortman
You saw the Olympics. He rocketed through the water like a jet-fueled Tiger shark. Five more golds, one more silver medal. He needs to add another wing to his house just to display his 28 career Olympic medals. Surely Michael Phelps is a study of total calmness and control. Or is he? In describing awaiting his leg in the 4 x 100 relay’s, Michael exclaimed, “I thought my heart was going to explode out of my chest!” That percussive thumping may be construed as excitement or joyous anticipation, but there is a better term – performance anxiety. The greatest swimmer born without fins or gills experiences performance anxiety before his big meet, just like you. But it’s not just Phelps. Former NBA MVP, Derrick Rose, of the Chicago Bulls, has battled anxiety, as have football legends, Earl Campbell and Ricky Williams. Serena Williams, the greatest women’s tennis player of all time, likes to use the same pair of socks throughout her tournament. Bubba Watson is no stranger to anxiety issues, and neither is FIFA world cup winner, Mia Hamm. Legend has it that four-time Super Bowl quarterback Jim Kelly, formerly of the Buffalo Bills, launched his Wheaties before each and every football game. The question is this: how do you manage your anxiety and master your pregame jitters and nervousness into a focused energy to be the best you can be? Relax, there is hope. If you aim to champion your
performance anxiety, it makes sense to understand what anxiety is and where it comes from. All anxiety begins with the PERCEPTION of threat to an investment of yours. (Something that matters to you) Here is a useful formula – investment plus threat = anxiety. If you care about your sporting event – and you do – and believe you are competing against a worthy opponent, you will be anxious. That’s just how you are built. But does anxiety help or hinder performance? That just depends on how anxious. Way back in 1905 (the last time the Chicago Cubs won the World Series), researchers Yerkes and Dodson discovered that peak performance occurs when levels of arousal (anxiety) is moderate. That is, too little anxiety yields sub par performance, possibly because you don’t care enough to invest your very best. Conversely, too much anxiety can also impair performance. Think about the deer in the headlights look on a baseball player whose bat freezes upon his shoulders for strike three, or the basketball player who “bricks” the gametying free-throw because her usually reliable shot is compromised by poor concentration. That can also be applied to your presentation in speech class – anxiety is your friend as long as it’s not too excessive. Here are 5 basic principles you can practise to champion your anxiety and achieve peak performance: - First, always gain a healthy perspective on the sporting event. As important as it feels to you right
now, it’s unlikely that your coach will actually “kill you” or your parents sell you on eBay for missing that easy putt. Remember, however important, it is truly just a game. - Learn that there is no better way to control your anxiety than learning to breathe properly. Try inhaling to the count of three and exhaling to the count of five to calm your inner beast. - Visualize your performance with your eyes closed. Watch yourself succeed in a movie playing in your head. If you can visualize doing it, you may find that real life success is right around the corner. - Use your anxiety for what it really is – an internal surge of energy. If you are a competitive runner or swimmer, for example, allow your anxiety to create the adrenaline rush you need to propel you to the finish line. - If your sport requires less of a surge of energy and more concentration /focus, like golf or baseball, use your energy to focus intently on one specific item, like the 12th hole or the incoming pitch. Practice zooming in on that goal/object to the exclusion of all other extraneous sights and sounds. Most importantly, never forget that win, lose or draw, youth sports are designed for fun. So enjoy the games and cherish the memories while you can. There will be a day when your competitive games are over. Just ask Michael Phelps.

Ocoee Football Have Rough Start
by Greyson Everidge
OCOEE – The Ocoee Bulldogs have had a rough start to the season, going zero for two on their first games of the 2016/17 season. Offense and defense have been disappointing, and the Bulldogs will want to get on track in their third game of the season. The first game was a loss that came at the hands of Apopka on the opening day of the season. In front of an away crowd, and one of the toughest opponents in the state, the Bulldogs couldn’t keep it together defensively, giving up touchdown after touchdown, eventually losing the game by a score of 62-7. Running and passing were weak,
and the Blue Darters offense split open the Bulldogs play after play, driving towards goal repeatedly throughout the first and second halves.
The Bulldogs next test will come against Edgewater at home, where a district match makes winning all the more important as Ocoee approaches this week head on. Fixing those mistakes The next game, although tighter in exposed in the first two as well as score, still had the same outcome for cleaning up both running and passing Ocoee – a loss. This time at the hands of plays for the Bulldogs are a priority, Lake Nona, the Bulldogs were defeated so that come game time on Friday the 25-22, needing only a field goal to tie 16th at 7 p.m., Ocoee are ready and the game up and head into extra time. able to take their first win of the season, Running plays were undoubtedly better, moving their record to (1-2) and the and defensively Ocoee looked stronger all- important (1-0) positive record in than they did in their opener. Apopka Volleyball Lose Last Two
by Greyson Everidge
APOPKA – The Apopka Blue Darter volleyball team are off to a good start with a (4-3) record, there are positives to take away as well as some mistakes that they can fix. With a district record of (1-1), there is still plenty to fight for in terms of playoff positions. Going back a week, the Blue Darters picked up two losses from their last three games. The matches have seen them lose to Spruce Creek and West Orange after sweeping Evans 3-0.
In the match against Evans (0-2), they displayed dominance and poise to win the sets 25-7, 25-8 and 25-14. There was never any real threat from the Trojans, who have yet to win a game this season.
West Orange (3-1), who have long been considered one of the best teams in the state for volleyball. They lost the sets 25-17, 25-22, and 25-19. Their only win came in the second set by a score of 25-15
Apopka then lost to undefeated Spruce Creek (4-0), 3-1. The loss isn’t a total failure for the Blue Darters, despite losing sets 25-15, 25,15, and 25-19 since they won the first set 25-22.
The Blue Darters will play the Wekiva Mustangs (1-4) next, who have failed to impress so far this season. Apopka will view it has a game which will help them get back on the winning track after a two match losing streak started midway through last week.
The next match was a 3-1 loss to rivals

The Titans next game will be at home against the Cypress Creek Bears (2-1), who have won two of their games while suffering a loss. This game is very important to the Olympia Titans because it will be their homecoming game so the whole school is counting on them to win, since they lost their homecoming game last year.
Olympia Volleyball Beats Oak Ridge by Ryan Popp
WINDERMERE – The Olympia Titans volleyball team (4-1), who have always been strong contenders for district, regional, and state titles have started their 2016/17 campaign on the right foot,
winning four overall with just one loss. They won their only district game, and are currently on a two game win streak going into the third week of play.
The Titans won their opening two games against Edgewater (3-2) and Lake Minneola (3-2), both by clean sweeps of 3-0 wins. The Edgewater match ended in a solid win for the Titans, who won 25-19, 25-18 and 25-14. They were led by a strong attacking presence, killing and spiking better than the Eagles, who are not a bad team by any stretch. They again proved themselves by sweeping Lake Minneola, who again like Edgewater, are good opposition for the Titans. They won their three sets 25-13, 25-10 and 25-21, easing up a bit in the finals stretch of the match but still managing to pull of the perfect win. Olympia lost their third match of the season in a tight game against Oviedo at home, which went into 5 sets of overtime. They won both the second and third sets, but lost the fourth and fifth on top of the initial first set loss, which gave the Hawks the 3-2 win over the Titans, who put up a great fight against one of the better teams in the state. Just like the first two of the season, Olympia went on to win their fourth and fifth games by perfect scores, sweeping their opponents three sets to zero. The wins came against Wekiva and Oak Ridge, putting the Titans back on the winning track as they look ahead to their next game against the Freedom Patriots, where the match will be played in front of a home crowd on September 13th at 7:30 p.m.

West Orange Volleyball Win 3 out of 3
by Greyson Everidge
WINTER GARDEN – The West Orange Warriors volleyball team won 3 games in as many days this week, with the most recent win coming against district rivals Apopka by a score of 3 sets to 1. West Orange’s record sits at (3-1), with the district record being (20). At the beginning of the week, right after Labor Day Weekend, the Warriors defeated Wekiva in a clean sweep of three sets to none, starting the jam packed week off right. The next night the West Orange team made the trip to Merritt Island for the Bright House Sports Network game of the week.
Merritt Island was ranked above West Orange in the Top 10 matchup, and from the beginning it looked like Merritt Island would win the match. Led by Sophomore Lexy Denaburg, the Mustangs went on to win the first two sets, leaving the Warriors trailing 2-0. Junior Makala Heidelburg and freshman Taylor Head helped lead West Orange to a 25-15 win in the third set, while a 6-0 early lead in the fourth set helped them win the set 25-21, tying the game up at 2 sets a piece. West Orange jumped out with a 5-0 lead early in the fifth and deciding set, and never looked back, winning the set 15-8 to complete the West Orange comeback to win
3-2. Apopka sits (3-1) and (1-1) in the district. Kayla Tapscott had 16 kills while Abby Weaver pitched 12 kills in the match against West Orange, but it proved not to be good enough as they lost the match 3-1 against the Warriors. West Orange won the sets 25-17, 25-22, and 25-19. They lost the second set by a score of 15-25. Baylor Bumford had 10 kills, 27 assists and 26 digs from junior counterpart Makayla Hiedelburg. Freshman Taylor Head also had a strong game, with 16 kills and 15 digs.
Busy Week for Central Florida Cross Country Teams by Greyson Everidge
CENTRAL FLORIDA – A host of different teams placed well in a different array of cross country events this past week, with teams running out of state as well as in state competitions. The defending state champions for girls cross country, Winter Park High, competed in the Coach Roy Benson Double Dip Invitational this past Saturday in Atlanta, Georgia. Winter Park collected a total for 48 points, which placed them second, only behind Georgia natives Milton from Alpharetta. The 5,000 meter run was contested by Winter Park junior Rafaella Gibbons, who placed fourth behind Georgia runners with a time of 19 minutes and four
hundredths of a second. Also placing were Hana Herndon, Elizabeth Jenkins, and Melanie White who placed 10th, 12th, and 16th respectively for the Wildcats. Windermere Prep Volleyball Go Four for Four
by Greyson Everidge
WINDERMERE - The Windermere Prep volleyball team has started the season strong, going four for four in the opening four matches, including one spectacular come from behind victory against Lake Minneola. The Lakers have yet to play a district match up until this point in the season, but if things continue as they have started, not much will get in the way of extending their winning streak. The season started off with a routine 3-1 win against International Community High, where the Lakers easily won the first, third and fourth sets by scores of 2511, 25-10 and 25-18. The only mishap was the second set, where ICHS won 25-17. The second game of the 2016/17 season
came against Lake Minneola High, where the Lakers trailed two sets to zero. They lost the opening two by scores of 20-25 and 17-25, but came back from behind to win three sets in a row to eventually win the game with scores of 25-11, 2513 and 15-13 coming in the third, fourth and fifth sets. It was a great display by the team who fought hard throughout the match to first catch up, and then eventually win. After the Minneola game the Lakers went on to play a clean sweep of Lake Forest High School, where the Lakers won the first, second, and third sets by scores of 25-14, 25-13 and 25-11. They controlled the game throughout its duration, never letting their opponents get a taste of
victory in a set. The next game was played on Saturday the 10th against Lakeland, and eventually resulted in a 2-1 win in favor of Windermere Prep. After losing the first set 22-25, the Lakers came back to win the next two 25-16 and 15-13 to walk away with the win. Once again, they showed perseverance to come from behind and walk away with the outcome going in their favor. They play Orangewood Christian, on Wednesday September 16th, at 6:30 pm. Orangewood has remained average at best, coming in with a record of (2-2) so far this season.
West Orange No Match for Dr. Phillips
by Greyson Everidge
Dr. PHILLIPS – The Dr. Phillips Panthers, fresh off the back of a 41-7 win against Lake Mary (0-3), went onto beat their bitter rivals, the West Orange Warriors (1-2), by a score of 40-3. The Panthers have moved to (3-0) on the season, remaining undefeated after a fair portion of the regular season has passed by.
In front of a home crowd of just over 5,000 people, the Panther started the scoring with a rushing touchdown which came from Celeb Walls. Dr. Phillips then failed a two point conversion, leaving the score at 6-0. Shortly after, also in the first quarter, the Panthers scored another rushing touchdown, where
they tried again for a two-point conversion. They failed again, and the first quarter ended at 12-0. The second quarter started with a Dr. Phillips touchdown scored by Tanner Ingle, and the Panthers went for an extra point, which turned out to be good. The Warriors scored a field goal courtesy of Andrew Brickweg, before ending the first half behind by a score of 19-3. Brickweg’s field goal would be the only points put on the board for the Warriors. Panther’s Quarterback and UCF commit Marvin Washington had a good second half, scoring one rushing touchdown himself and completing a pass to Emare Hogan for another touchdown. In between Washington’s plays, DP player D.J Charles scored another rushing touchdown. The Warriors looked weak, and have ever since the suspensions of both star senior wide receivers Naquan Renalds and Jurrod Cook. After an incident that remains undisclosed by OCPS, Cook transferred to a school near Tallahassee to play football for the remainder of the season. Renalds was expected to follow, but instead chose to appeal the decision, something which has since been confirmed by West Orange Head Coach Bob Head. The Warriors Sentinel Super 16 rating has since dropped to No. 14, while the Panthers still remain at No. 3. Dr. Phillips next game will come against formidable opponents Apopka, while the Warriors face off against Oxbridge academy.

University of Central Florida Lose on Road to Michigan by Greyson Everidge
ANN ARBOR, MICHIGAN – The University of Central Florida Knights lost this past weekend at the hands of the Michigan Wolverines by a score of 51-14. There were, however, some positives to take away from these opening two games, which put the Knights record at an even (1-1), after a bad season last year which left the Knights deflated. Michigan, who are now (2-0) on the season, started the scoring midway through the first quarter when Jake Butt caught a three-yard pass from Michigan quarterback Wilton Speight to make the score 6-0. Kenny Allen made good on the extra point to put the Wolverines ahead by 7. Just a few minutes later Kahlid Hill scored on a two yard run, putting UCF behind by 14.
The quarter was topped off by a 45 yard pass from Speight to Darboh which ended a bad first period for the Knights. A 24-yard field goal by Allen opened the second quarter for the Wolverines. This was followed by a second Speight-Butt combo which put Michigan ahead by a score of 31-0. UCF responded with an 87 yard run off the kickoff, courtesy of Adrian Killins. It wasn’t until halfway through the third quarter when UCF would score again, this time off a Dontravious Wilson run for 34 yards. The Wolverines finished off the second half with another touchdown, ending a good display against the Knights 51-14.
Michigan freshman Eddie McDoom, himself from West Orange High School in Central Florida, saw a fair bit of game time in his second college football game, where he had a nice spin move to pick up a first down for the Wolverines. He was also tackled on a play which was eventually ruled targeting, one which saw a UCF player ejected from the game. Michigan quarterback Speight led the game with 312 passing yards for four touchdowns, while UCF quarterback N. Patti was only three for eleven, throwing for just 37 yards. UCF play the Maryland Terrapins at home in their next outing on September 17th, 2016
FSU Complete Comeback at Camping World Stadium by Greyson Everidge
ORLANDO – Florida State University and Ole Miss duked it out for the season opener just over two weeks ago now, in a great match which eventually saw the Seminoles complete a comeback in front of a home crowd here in Orlando at the Camping World Stadium.
with Evan Engram’s 21 yard catch from Kelly adding to the turmoil for FSU. After Mississippi kicker Gary Wunderlich made good on his third extra point attempt in a row, Ole Miss led 21-3 halfway through the second quarter.
It was Ole Miss who struck first, scoring a three yard passing touchdown courtesy of Damore’ea Stringfellow, which put Mississippi ahead in the 13th minute. Florida State responded late in the first quarter with a 25 yard field goal through Ricky Aguayo to put the Seminoles on the board for the first time.
Ricky Aguayo went good on a 21 yard field goal giving the Noles more points on the board, only to be setback yet again by an Ole Miss touchdown scored by Akeem Judd, who completed an 11 yard run to put Mississippi clear of Florida State 28-6. FSU scored their first touchdown late in the first half through Travis Rudolph, where they then trailed 28-13 at half.
D.K Metcalf received another short pass from Kelly to open up the second quarters scoring,
A field goal and three touchdowns scored by three different players led a strong Florida State
quarter which eventually saw them go ahead by a score of 36-28, leaving Ole Miss without any points on the board in the second half thus far. The fourth quarter was opened up by a fine 40 yard field goal by FSU kicker Aguayo, followed up by an Ole Miss touchdown by Van Jefferson. Two more field goals by FSU’s Aguayo, 44 yards and 30 yards respectively, closed the game out for a 45-34 win for Florida State. FSU quarterback D. Franquois went 33 for 52 on passes, while D.Cook led the team led the team for rushing with 91 yards.

Foundation Academy Volleyball Looking Solid
by Greyson Everidge
WINTER GARDEN – The Foundation Academy volleyball team are looking strong, and after eight games sitting with a (6-2) record overall, it looks like this season will turn out to be a good one for the Lions.
In a recent string of games, the Lions have recorded just one loss, with multiple wins coming against all types of opponents. Foundation played Real Life Christian Academy on August 30th, taking the win in all three sets
by scores of 25-12, 25-12, and 25-14 to put away their opponents. RLCA sits with a (3-1) record so far this season, but it was a win most would expect Foundation to pick up despite the good start to RLCA’s season. The Lions played their next game against district opponents Mount Dora Christian Academy, where Foundation had a clean sweep, winning all three sets to move the Lions to a (2-0) district record. They won the first set 25-11, the second 27-25, and the last 25-15. Ana Grace Williams was selected as the “Player of the Match”. Foundation played Orlando Christian Prep in a tight game which saw Foundation come out on top, but just barely, winning 3-2 to keep their momentum going. The first set was won 25-16, the second lost 25-11, and the third going Foundation’s way by a score of 25-23. The fourth and fifth sets saw OCP win one 30-28, and Foundation win the other 15-7. Foundations most recent game resulted in a loss during a tournament matchup against Riverdale, where the Lions lost on two sets by a score of 2520 and 29-27 respectively. Apopka Dominates Deland High
by Ryan Popp
APOPKA - The Apopka Blue Darters have had a great season thus far and have drawn thousands of people to the stands every Friday night. They have dominated every single opponent they have faced so far, which makes opponents slightly nervous on the field – and it shows. In their game against Edgewater two weeks ago, they beat their opponents to the East by a score of 78-0, a total knock out. They are being led by their quarterback, Damaris August, as well as the rest of their offensive linemen. On the 9th of September, they played Deland and showed no mercy throughout the duration of the match, tipping some fans to believe this

Lake Howell and Winter Springs Play Out Great Offensive Match by Greyson Everidge
ALTAMONTE SPRINGS – Lake Howell outscored Winter Springs in a hotly contested match which saw Lake Howell win by a score of 56-42 at home, with quarterback Cody Veal passing for 364 yards. Both teams combined for an outlandish 976 total offensive yards. With the win, Veal and Lake Howell stay undefeated at the start of the season with a (3-0) record. The Silver Rail Hawks are (3-0) for the first time in twenty years. They combined for 527 offensive yards, with 107 rushing yards going to Tyson Stephenson. Stephenson had two touchdowns, and the Rail Hawks went on to score eight touchdowns on the night. Clayton Ross caught three touchdown passes for two touchdowns and 99 yards, while Kenyon’ta Skinner caught three passes for 90 yards and one touchdown. Winter Springs player Marcel Mitchel had three touchdowns and rushed for 267 yards in a dominantly running game for Winter Springs. 449 of its 459 offensive yards came from running plays. It worked, as Winter Springs scored seven touchdowns on the night. However, with the loss, the Wildcats record moved in a negative direction to (1-2). Throughout the first half, no team led by more than eight points, with the score being 42-35 to Lake Howell at the half. Scoring slowed down in the second half after a crazy first two quarters which saw 11 touchdowns in the first two periods and seven in the second quarter alone. Lake Howell plays West Port on the 16th as they look to retain their perfect record and move to (4-0). At this point, the stats seem to predict a
Lake Howell win. Winter Springs will try to get the win in their next matchup on the 16th
which comes against Lyman High School.

Foundation Academy Made History
by Logan Beardslee
TAMPA – Foundation Academy’s varsity football team made history last Friday night on several levels:
Patriots’ spread offense led by mobile quarterback Raymond Woodie.
• The Lions emerged victorious in the first football game played at Carrollwood Day School’s Wagner Athletic Complex. The Patriots held the grand opening for their new on-campus home, but Foundation grabbed much of the spotlight with a convincing 42-7 win.
“We practiced hard this week, and at 0-2, I knew we weren’t an 0-2 team,” Lord said. “We moved the ball up and down the field against West Orange, but we made mistakes. It was mistakes that really hurt us the first two weeks.” Foundation had yet to score an offensive touchdown or any first-half points through the opening two weeks. That all changed Friday.
• Making his initial start of the season at quarterback, Foundation senior Jacob Titus scored the first-ever touchdown at Swain Field on a 14-yard run with 10:38 left in the opening quarter. Titus would post two more rushing scores during the Lions’ 28-point first half. • Foundation set a new program record (or at least tied an existing mark) for the shortest touchdown drive. A first-quarter keeper by Titus highlighted a 1-yard possession, which was the result of the Patriots downing the ball near their goal line following a high center snap in punt formation. • The Lions defeated Carrollwood Day for the first time in four tries, dating back to the 2009 season when both schools competed in the Sunshine State Athletic Conference. The Patriots also defeated Foundation in 2014 (26-21) and 2015 (20-0). The aforementioned facts and figures notwithstanding, Foundation’s 35-point triumph was important from a confidence standpoint. The Lions (1-2) took out some of their frustrations after opening the 2016 season with losses to Class 8A West Orange and undefeated The First Academy-Orlando. Head coach Brad Lord believed the Lions were in a position to run the ball effectively against Carrollwood Day – that proved true as Foundation rushed for 252 yards on 32 attempts – while the defense registered 9 tackles for loss, 6 sacks and 3 takeaways against the
Titus (6 carries, 41 yards) ran for 3 opening-half touchdowns and senior running back Jaquane Patterson rushed for 130 yards and found the end zone 3 times. The Lions built a 28-7 halftime advantage before Patterson’s 42-yard interception return for a touchdown and Brandon Barnes’ 6th extra point of the night started a running clock with just under 5 minutes remaining. Foundation upped the tempo on offense, which returned Sydal Barton to the lineup after the senior right tackle missed the Lions’ 22-7 loss to TFA in Week 2 with a concussion. Barton joined left tackle Andrew Johns, center Jordan Boast, guards Eddie Loos and Dillon Hall and tight end Kenny Ames on the offensive line, and senior fullback Anthony Recchia helped wear down Carrollwood Day’s interior defense with 45 yards on 12 carries. Trailing 14-0, Carrollwood Day closed within 7 points on the strength of Woodie’s 14-yard touchdown pass to Stephen Walters at the 2:25 mark of the first quarter. The Patriots’ only other trip to the end zone came early in the second half, when Markeis Colvin had a long punt return for a touchdown negated by a penalty. Foundation’s Evan Thompson finished with 9 total tackles, 2 tackles for loss and 2 sacks, Evan Fitzgibbon contributed 9 tackles, Kyle Krueger (6
tackles, 1 tackle for loss, 1 sack) recovered a fumble on the game’s first play from scrimmage and Patterson (4 tackles, 2 tackles for loss, 1 sack, 1 forced fumble, 1 interception) was a key factor bringing pressure off the edge. The Lions’ defense also benefited from a deep rotation on another warm and humid night. “We knew their quarterback [Woodie] was elusive,” Lord said. “He’s a very good player and we knew [Colvin] was a good player, but we also knew those two players played on both sides of the ball.” Patterson took a handoff and went around the left side for an 11-yard touchdown with 4:13 left in the second quarter. Chaz Cannon forced a fumble one minute later that Gian Reyes recovered at midfield, setting up a Titus-to-Luke Chase 28-yard completion and later Titus’ 1-yard TD run with 63 seconds to go before halftime. Patterson’s 79-yard touchdown run came during the opening minute of the fourth quarter and Barnes kicked the extra point to make it 35-7. Patterson later upped the advantage when he intercepted a ricocheted pass off a startled Carrollwood Day receiver and returned it for a score. Foundation returns to Florida’s West Coast in Week 4 with a visit to St. Petersburg Northside Christian (2-1). Head coach Mike Alstott’s Mustangs defeated the Lions on the field last season 29-7, but Foundation was later awarded a forfeit win. Northside Christian dropped to 2-1 overall with Friday’s 40-35 loss to Lakeland Victory Christian. The game featured a matchup of two teams (the No. 4 Storm and No. 5 Mustangs) ranked in the last week’s Associated Press Class 2A state poll.
