Heart of a Champion

by Dr. Christopher Cortman

There is a game somewhere in the past that you just can’t seem to forget. You have replayed it 100 times in your mind when you should have been studying, focusing on the task at hand, or even sleeping. How in the world did that game slip away? You are better than the opponent. You know that. They should never have beaten you. If only you had the chance for a do over, it would be different this time. Or would it? Sports history is chock full of David versus Goliath upsets: in 1970, Willis Reed hobbled down to the court – scored only four points – and inspired his Knicks to a game seven upset over Wilt Chamberlain, Jerry West, and the unbeatable Los Angeles Lakers. The “Do you believe in miracles? “ 1980 US hockey team had no business beating the Soviet Union, except that they did. And the 2007–2008 New England Patriots enjoyed 18 big wins before suffering one (New York) Giant loss in the Super Bowl. For every upset story, there is an individual performance that transcends time and creates or reinforces the athlete’s status as legend: Joe Namath’s guaranteed win in Super Bowl 3; Reggie Jackson’s three homerun game in the 1977 World Series; Michael Jordan’s 1997

championship performance while suffering from symptoms of the flu; Brett Favre’s four touchdown performance one day after his father’s death, in 2003. Roberta Vinci’s upset of Serena Williams in the finals of the 2015 U.S. Open. No doubt, you have your own personal favorite. But these are great athletes, you say. Yes, but so are their opponents. So, just where did they find the motivation to do the unthinkable? What reservoir must they tap to ensure greatness? And, in your case, how did your opponent score the motivation to defeat you? Motivation, from a psychologist’s point of view, can be intrinsic, (from within), or goaloriented, also known as achievement motivation. Psychologist Dr. David McClelland and his colleagues, studied achievement motivation for 40 years, (longer than Favre’s and Jordan’s careers combined, including all the comebacks). He found that athletes with a high need for achievement worked harder, were more futureoriented and demonstrated a greater capacity to delay gratification, (weight training over “Grand Theft Auto”). They also made greater sacrifices and – here’s the bottom line – made their goals part of their lives.

Let’s talk about your investments – the things that matter most to you. We know that emotions/feelings are the byproducts of investments. In other words, the only things powerful enough to create passionate emotions in you are the things that matter most to you. Put differently, your motivation emerges from your investments. The questions to ask yourself are these: How important is my game? My season? My sport? My team? My teammates? My academics? My future? What is it that matters most to me? Would you sacrifice, commit, practice, train, lift, run, rehab – even harder than your opponent? If your answer is yes, you have the heart of a champion. If your answer is no, maybe your loss was no upset at all. For more information go to:

West Orange Football on Four Game Losing Streak by Logan Beardslee

WEST ORANGE – In what has proven to be a rough start for the West Orange Warriors this season, they are trying to find themselves and get more wins after their most recent loss to Jones. They lost to Jones by a score of 4824 and are now (1-4) on the season so far. With their latest game ending in a 48-24 loss, it doesn’t look like the warriors will have as good a season as they planned at the start. With two WR’s Naquan Ranald’s and Jurrod Cook both getting expelled after the first game, it has taken a major toll on the performance of the Warriors. Without these two integral parts of their offense, they have been unable to put points up on the board to get the victories they so badly need. In the four losses they have suffered this season, they have been unable to

manage more than three touchdowns partly due to the loss of the starred wide receivers, who up until their expulsion had been attracting serious

Head Coach Bobby Head hopes he will be able to get a grip on the season and turn things around for both the offense and defense for a better performances on the field. In recent games the offense has not been able to find good opportunities to put points on the board for the Warriors. It will be interesting to see how the warriors will be able to bounce back and get wins on the board. The next West Orange game comes against none other than their bitter rivals Apopka, who have gone undefeated with a (5-0) record so far this season, facing tough opposition themselves none the less. The match, which will be played on the 30th, is critical for the Warriors who are hoping to find their feet – and a win against the Blue Darters would do just that.

Division One attention.

West Orange Sophomore Creates Girls Wrestling Team by Greyson Everidge

WINTER GARDEN – High school wrestling has long been a sport reserved for boys, with little to no competition coming from girls. Every once in a while, you would get the odd girl who, competing in a boys’ competition, who would turn some heads as she stepped on the mat. For tenth grader Sarah Zimmerman from West Orange, a girls wrestling team was something she always thought she could accomplish. “I wanted to create a girls wrestling team because my cousins wrestled,” said Zimmerman. “I also think girls should be able to wrestle just like the boys.” After the idea came to mind, Zimmerman

had to execute the plan, which wasn’t easy. However finding girls willing to help start a team from the ground up, literally, wasn’t something she was ever worried about. “We started asking girls to join last year,” she said. “We put an announcement on the morning news at school and eventually got the numbers we needed.”

as they can right off the bat, something which they know will be tough in their first year as a team.

The next phase was finding a coach, which Sarah had someone in mind for. Coach Charles Harpin took the job after being approached about it.

A lot of hard work has gone into creating the team, but it’s something Sarah says she wouldn’t change. It’s something she has always wanted to do, and tired of doing things according to other people’s notions, she took full control of the opportunity to create what will surely become a strong wrestling team for West Orange in its inaugural season.

As of now, the team doesn’t actually have a league to play in, although the girls are eager to start competing. They want to win as many

“Long term we just want to keep this going as long as we can, and to go to as many competitions as we can in our first year.” Said Zimmerman.

Dr. Phillips Football Lose Last Two by Greyson Everidge DR. PHILLIPS – The Dr. Phillips Panthers football team lost two in a row, after a string of underwhelming performances from a strong team looking to make their way into playoffs. The losses came to local rival Apopka, and then Mainland.

which would be quickly lost. The Blue Darters would go on to score a touchdown in both the third and fourth quarters to bring the game within one

The second loss for Dr. Phillips came away against Mainland (5-0), by a score of 42-21. The Mainland Buccaneers remained undefeated with their win against the Panthers. The Buccaneers put up consistent points thanks to the combined offensive of the quarterbacks and wide receivers, also rushing well to supplement the throwing game. They scored once in the first, and they Panthers matched. In the second quarter Mainland put three touchdowns on the board, while Dr. Phillips went scoreless, all but assuring the win for Mainland. Dr. Phillips would go on to score in the third and fourth quarters, but Mainland easily matched.

After a huge 40-3 win at home to bitter rivals West Orange (1-5), confidence was flowing through the team as they headed into an important game against another big and undefeated team – Apopka (5-0). However, bringing home the Orange Crate from the Warriors wasn’t enough to help beat the undefeated Blue Darters, who moved their record to (4-0), before making it five the following week. Dr. Phillips struck first, in both the first and second quarters, while keeping Apopka to zero touchdowns for the first half. The Panthers headed into the locker room at halftime with a 14-0 lead,

point. Instead of going for the extra point, Apopka made good on a two-point conversion attempt with 10 minutes left to play, winning by a score of 15-

Dr. Phillips next game will come on Friday the 30th, against Oakridge High School.

Dr. Phillips Volleyball Hit Ten Game Winning Streak by Greyson Everidge

DR. PHILLIPS – The Dr. Phillips Panther’s volleyball team hit an impressive ten game winning streak after losing one of their first matchups, as they now sit (11-2) on the season.

The series of impressive games stretched from district, and non-district play, and a highly competitive tournament where the Panthers eventually lost their first of 11 games.

Most recently the Panthers won against Freedom, Oak Ridge, and DeLand by scores of 3-0, 3-1, and 2-0 respectively. Against Freedom, the Panthers won the sets by a strong 25-13, 25-18 and 25-23. The Patriots were no match for the Panthers, which showed throughout the match. Oak Ridge lost the sets 25-11, 25-15, and 25-8. DeLand lost the two sets by scores of 25-23 and 25-13. In tournament play, the Dr. Phillips Showcase, the Panthers won three in a row before losing the fourth, putting them out of the tournament and ending their streak. The first win came against Harmony, which ended in a 2-0 win. The next win came against Winter Springs (6-6), a very strong team who usually compete in the State playoffs, also by a score of 2-0. The sets went 25-16 and 25-15 in favor of Dr. Phillips. The third and final win of the winning streak came against Immaculate Heart Academy (5-1), with the scores from the sets being 25-15 and 25-14. The end of the ten game streak came to Ferguson from Miami, in a game which ended 2-0 against the Panthers. The scores were tight in each set, the first going 25-22, and the second going 27-25 after an overtime in the second set. It saw Dr. Phillips exit their own tournament, although there were positives to take away from the tight matchup. The Panthers next game will come in regular season play to Boone High School. The game is to be played on September 29th, at 7:30 pm at Boone High.

Olympia Football Wins Versus Evans

by Ryan Popp

WINDERMERE - Olympia Football played at Evans last Friday, coming out with a win of (3116). While this was not a district game, the win still added to their four game winning streak. Olympia has only lost one game, which was to Seminole, (42-12). They have gone three for three otherwise, winning all but the matchup against Seminole. Their overall game record is four wins and one loss. They started off their winning streak by beating East River on the 2nd of September with the final score being (20-13). They continued the streak by beating Colonial (5427), Cypress Creek (40-14) and Evans (31-16). So far they have only had one district game, which was against Cypress Creek, a game they won. In the latest game against Evans, Olympia scored consistently throughout the match, putting up

one touchdown in the first quarter, a field goal in the second, another touchdown in the third

and two in the fourth quarter. All of Evans game points were in the fourth quarter, where the Trojans scored 16 points. Evans actually

recorded more first downs than the Titans, doubling the number from 7 to 14, however a host of penalty’s ended up hurting them. They gave up 106 penalty yards to the Titans. Olympia junior quarterback Joe Milton threw for 113 yards and made good on 5 of his 15 attempted passes, while Derick Bell rushed for 78 yards on 20 carries. Jordan Underwood received for 63 yards on the night. The Titans next district game is coming up next week against Freedom on the 30th of September. The game will be played at Freedom High school, and Olympia is favored to win since Freedom has a losing record of (1-3). Olympia has not lost a district game yet, so if Olympia beats freedom their record in the district will move to (2-0), moving them into a better position to make a playoff run as the midway point of the season approaches.

Olympia High school Girls Volleyball Have Strong Showings by Ryan Popp

WINDERMERE - The Olympia Titans girls’ volleyball team were able to beat Cypress Creek (3-2) at home on the 22nd of September. It was a district game, and their win brought their league record to three wins and one loss. Overall Olympia has had a winning record for this season with eight wins and four losses. Earlier this season they had a four game winning streak by beating Wekiva (3-0), Oak Ridge (3-0), Freedom (3-0) and Boone (3-0) which ended abruptly when they played Dr. Phillips and lost on the 15th of September (3-1). Dr. Phillips has been their only loss in district play.

In the game against Freedom, the Titans swept their opponents, with the set scores being 258, 25-22 and 25-11. It was a good display of attacking play by the Titans, who took their opportunities, and held the lead all the way through the game. They beat Boone by set scores of 25-15, 25-17 and 25-18 to cap off a good night for Olympia. The loss against Dr. Phillips came as no real surprise, as the Panthers have had a strong showing so far this season. It was a rivalry game, with the set scores being 16-25, 15-25 and 2513. The Titans did win the second set 25-21, however it wasn’t enough to go on and mount a

comeback to win the game. In a tournament match up, Olympia beat Lakeland (2-0) and lost to Spruce Creek (2-0) in the Winter Park Showcase. Olympia will play West Orange next on the 27th of September at 7:30 pm. While this game may not be a district game, it will still be a very important game because of the stature of the two teams. Both teams are having a very good season. Olympia and West Orange have been bitter rivals since the opening of the two schools. On top of that, the Warriors beat Olympia earlier in the season, giving the Titans all the more reason to fight for a win at West Orange.

Windermere Prep Football Undefeated After Five by Kaden Bauer

WINDERMERE - The Windermere Prep Laker’s football team is off to a solid start this season with an undefeated (5-0) record. Two of those wins come from district play, which means that they are in the race for a playoff spot. A mix between an impressive offense and steadfast defense are helping to rack up the wins for the Laker’s side. In their first two games, the Lakers swept their opposition by outscoring their opponents 55-7 and 54-14 to Boca Raton Christian (FL) and Village (TX) respectively. They consistently displayed their dominant offensive side while averaging 483 yards per game, 317 of those coming from rushing, and scoring an average of eight touchdowns between those two games. The next two games were even more impressive for Windermere Prep. The Lakers defense allowed a grand total of zero points in both of these games, 42-0 versus Orangewood Christian and 49-0

versus Lake Mary Prep, while still racking up the offensive points.

Their only real competition came in the form of a 36-32 win in their fifth game against St. Edwards. The offense continued their strong

running game through their 331 rushing yards and four rushing touchdowns. If the Windermere Prep Lakers can keep improving on this result and their season average of 8.6 yards per carries throughout the rest of their season, they should have no problem making it into the playoffs. On the other hand there were some worries that head coach Jacob Doss would have seen in his side’s defense. They allowed a season high of 32 points to be scored against them, which is more than thier past four games combined. The Lakers will hope to continue their good run against non-conference Legacy Charter on Friday, September 30th, at 7 p.m. If Jacob Doss can fix the defensive errors his side had against St. Edwards and continue his strong offensive showing, the Lakers should have no trouble improving their record to (6-0).

Ocoee Football Win Last Two Played

by Greyson Everidge

OCOEE – The Ocoee Knights football team has gone two for two in the last few weeks, having gone without a win in the first two games of the season after losing to Apopka and Lake Nona. After their by-week rolled

around after the loss to Lake Nona, the Knights came back a different team, winning against both Edgewater and East Ridge after the break.

In the match against Edgewater, which ultimately ended in a 52-21 win for the Knights, the offense picked up from their previous losses which had limited the number of games they could win. The quarterbacks had some great throws, making good rushing plays to help secure the win. Defensively, the Knights held their line, sacking the quarterback on occasion to help limit the forward yards of Edgewater throughout the game. The next win came against East Ridge (2-2), which the Knights won 21-12. It was the Knights homecoming game, so it was critical that they got a win in front of their home crowd, and even better was the fact that it drew their record even on the year, as it moved to (2-2). The first quarter saw East Ridge take the lead 6-0, but failing to score the extra point. Ocoee stepped it up and scored 14 points in the second quarter to give them the lead, and then scored again in the third quarter. East Ridge failed to score in both the second and third quarters, but did manage to get 6 points in the fourth quarter, missing the extra point for the second time on the night. It proved not to matter, as the Knights still trumped them 21-12 in the end. The Knights next game will come against Hagerty, at Hagerty on Friday September 30th. Hagerty has a (4-0) undefeated record so far, although Ocoee will be hoping to upset that record in order to help move them positive in a positive direction, with a hopeful (3-2) record.

Lake Highland Football Look Strong After Four

by Greyson Everidge

ORLANDO – The Lake Highland Prep Football team has started the 2016/17 season strong, winning three of their four games so far losing only to the strong program of Cocoa. After a strong season last year, the Highlanders are doing well again this year, making a strong bid for playoffs as the halfway mark of the season approaches. Lake Highland won their opening game against Lake Weir, at Lake Weir, by a score of 36-19. Lake Weir currently have a (1-3) record, the first loss of course coming to LHP. Lake Weir only managed to put up 195 all-purpose yards, which wasn’t enough to keep up with the attacking prowess of the Highlanders. The second game of the season was a win by

default, after their opponents, Marco Island Academy, forfeited the game. The scoreboard reflected 2-0 because of the forfeit, however, had the game actually been played out, Lake Highland, would have walked away with the win regardless. Marco Island Academy has gone (04) this season, with more problems mounting. Lake Highland went on to win the next game, against Seven Rivers Christian, by a score of 426. Highlanders quarterback Elijah Lucas threw for 147 of the 172 total passing yards for Lake Highland. The team also totaled 185 rushing yards, with 80 coming from junior Devyn Castor on two carries. Nick Deese ran for 44 yards, and Desmond King ran for 34. Total all-purpose yards totaled 357 yards on the night.

The loss against Cocoa (3-1) was expected, as the Tigers have become one of the dominant teams in the region. The Tigers ran for an impressive 305 rushing yards, with 109 of them coming from Lasedrick King Judson. Judson also threw for 122 yards, completing four of his five attempted passes. All-purpose yards totaled 527 for the Tigers, out preforming the Highlanders on every area of play on the night. The next game for Lake Highland will be a home game against Atlantic (3-0), who are undefeated so far this season. Atlantic have scored high in two of their three games, so it is critical that the Lake Highland defense hold tight to disrupt attacking play if they hope to move to four wins this season.

Lake Highland Volleyball Above Average

by Greyson Everidge

ORLANDO – In the last six games, the Lake Highland volleyball team sit even with a (3-3) record, although they have a positive total record this season of (11-6). As the season approaches its end, the Highlanders will look to keep winning to secure a playoff spot for the post season.

In their last two matchups, Lake Highland lost both, as part of a double header to Trinity Catholic. The first loss came against Trinity Catholic by three sets to two, by scores of 25-20, 27-9, and 15-7. Lake Highland had won the first two, meaning they lost the lead and gave up a comeback victory to Trinity. Three days later they lost again to Trinity, this time by three sets to zero. The set scores went 25-14, 2518 and 25-21 in favor of Trinity Catholic. A majority of Lake Highland’s losses this season came in the tournament played last week, so they will hope to get back on a winning track as they make the push for playoffs.

In tournament play on both the 16th and 17th, the Highlanders lost three out of three to Carrollwood Day and Academy of Holy Names, each by two sets to zero. The third loss came against Venice, and also ended in a 2-0 defeat for the Highlanders. In the fifth game of the tournament Lake Highland registered a win, outscoring Woodward Academy 2-0, with set wins coming by scores of 25-22 and 25-8. They then went on to win against Cardinal Gibbons 2-0 in sets of 25-20 and 25-13, also in tournament play. Lake Highland next won by three sets to one

against Montverde Academy, winning 25-23, 25-22 and 25-12. The only loss in the game came during set two by a score of 13-25.

That opportunity will come next against Windermere Prep, at home, on September 29th at 7 pm. The Lakers have gone through this season (4-4), meaning its Lake Highlands game to lose. Windermere Prep have lost all four of their last games.

Windermere Prep Volleyball Lose Last Two by Kaden Bauer

WINDERMERE - The Windermere Prep Lakers are having some problems midway through their 2016-2017 season as they sit with a (4-4) record. It may not seem that bad but they are (0-2) in district play and will have to make up plenty of ground in order to keep their playoff dreams alive. The Lakers started the season off strong with three consecutive wins against non-conference sides International Community, Lake Minneola, and Forest Lake Academy. They won their matches 3-1, 3-2, and 3-0 respectively with numerous strong showings. In their 3-0 sweep of Forest Lake Academy, the Windermere Prep Lakers put up impressive set wins of 25-14, 25-13, and 25-11. This was a very positive result for the Lakers volleyball team and can be built upon in the future.

Serpa who made some changes and rallied the team in order to beat Lakeland 2-1 in an intense matchup. The Lakers rallying point was short lived as they lost back to back games to strong sides Montverde Academy and Trinity Prep with scores of 3-1 and 3-0. Despite badly losing their first set 25-12 against Trinity Prep Saints, The Windermere Prep Lakers have something to be proud of by barley losing 25-20 and 26-24 to the very strong Saint’s side. The Lakers will be playing Legacy Charter (1-9) who have failed to win all but one of their games this Their initial success was quickly extinguished season. Windermere Prep should by two 2-0 losses by Ponte Vedra and win this game with no problem and will end Archbishop McCarthy. Not winning a single up viewing this game as a confidence booster set in those two games or even coming to try and help propel themselves into a within five points of winning a single set playoff worthy team. will be a big worry to head Coach Diego

Foundation Academy Volleyball Win Five of Last Six by Greyson Everidge

WINTER GARDEN – The Foundation Academy volleyball team, now (11-6) on

the season, have won five of the last six matchups in the past few weeks, as well as

having a strong showing so far this month. Wins came against some notable opposition including Legacy Charter, Lake Mary Prep and Faith Christian. On September 10th, the Lions got back on a winning track after losing the previous match to Auburndale, in a game which would turn out to be the start of a five game winning streak against Port Charlotte. The win came in tournament play, and ended in a 2-0 win for Foundation. The next win came against Faith Christian (5-5), in a strong 3-1 win. The first set went to Foundation 25-22. The second set also went Foundations way, by a score of 2519. The third set was the only one which saw the Lions lose as Faith Christian won by a score of 25-21. It didn’t matter in the end as Foundation won the fourth set, and ultimately, the game, 25-22. The next two Lion wins came against Legacy Charter (1-9) in the double header, the first win coming by three sets to two. Foundation walked away with the win, leaving Legacy with just one win on the season. The second win in the series came a few days later, this time sweeping the three sets 25-9, 25-9, and 25-18. Foundation made the five win mark after beating Lake Mary Prep (0-6) by a clean sweep of 3-0, winning the sets 25-9, 25-9, and 25-18. Lauren Miller, Macy Wise, and Evie Sewell all had six digs for the Lions, helping beat Lake Mary, who have yet to win a game. The winning streak came to an end for Foundation when they played at The First Academy (11-4), which saw them lose 3 sets to 0 against their rivals in a district game. The Lions next game will come against Faith Christian, who were already beaten earlier in the season by Foundation Academy.

Bishop Moore Football Wins Three of Four

by : Greyson Everidge

ORLANDO – The Bishop Moore Hornets have started to pick up the pace this season, winning three of their four opening games against some notable opposition. They registered just one loss in a tight match to University, but have kept their record strong otherwise. After winning the State Championship last season, there is a strong urgency to perform well again this season so that they may reach the playoffs, of course hoping to repeat what they managed to accomplish last season. Those playoff dreams were started with a 42-6 win over the Edgewater Eagles, who are no shabby team by any stretch. They carried on

Bishop Moore Volleyball Ranked First In State by Greyson Everidge

ORLANDO – The Bishop Moore volleyball team has gone about halfway through the 2016/17 season, remaining undefeated at (90), sweeping their opponents on six of the nine games they have played so far. Their efforts have earned them a number three rank in the Max Preps Xcellent 25 rank, a 39th place national rank, and the number one rank in the state of Florida. The season got underway with a 3-0 sweep of Trinity Catholic, winning the sets 25-14, 2520 and 25-19. Despite the efforts of Trinity Catholic, key player Annie Cate Fitzpatrick, who registered 12 kills and three assists, Trinity couldn’t manage to win a set. The next sweep came just a few days later against South Lake, where the Hornets won by three sets to none in district play. Bishop Moore has gone three for three in district play, with the first win coming against South Lake. The Hornets played three games in a row on the road against Lake Highland Prep, Lake Mary, and Oviedo. They won each game 3-1, nearly shutting out their opponents. Bishop Moore moved on from those to win four more in a row, failing to lose even a single set in the next four games. The 3-0 sweeps came against two district opponents, Tavares and Poinciana, helping move their district record to the perfect (3-0) where it sits now. In between those district wins they defeated formidable opposition in Spruce Creek and Boone, winning the sets 25-22, 25-22, 25-15 and 25-23, 25-18, and 25-16 respectively. Bishop Moore has a bye this week, with their last two remaining games in the season coming against Winter Park (7-5) and The First Academy (15-2). The game against Winter Park will be played on October 5th, while the Hornets will face off against TFA on the 11th. Bishop Moore will look to finish strong, winning the last two to keep their perfect record, hopefully ending the season (11-0).

The next game for Bishop Moore will come against South Lake on September 30th at 7:30 pm. The Hornets will look to win again, helping drive them towards a playoff spot.

Foundation Academy Football Win Most Recent Game by Greyson Everidge

WINTER GARDEN – The Foundation Academy Lions (3-2) won their last matchup against St. Petersburg Catholic, winning 40-14 having lost their previous game against Northside Christian by a score of 27-7. On the 16th, Foundation made the trip to Northside Christian (3-1) in St. Petersburg, looking to get a win on the road. Coached by Mike Alstott, the Mustangs beat the Lions 21-7. The first quarter remained scoreless between the two sides, but Northside broke through to get the first points of the game, scoring the touchdown and making good on the extra point in the second quarter. The Lions scored their only touchdown of the night in the third, but the Mustangs matched, and then went on to score one last touchdown in the fourth quarter to finish off the match.

The Lions were lacking on forward yards on the night, particularly throwing ones. Senior quarterback Jacob Titus completed three of his ten attempted passes, going for a total of 45 yards. Evan Thompson went one for one, throwing for 22 yards. On rushing, Titus lost six yards despite being the scorer of the only touchdown for the Lions. The Mustangs threw for 158 yards total, with 150 of those coming from Griffin Alstott. Jaquan Patterson was the standout for Foundation, running for 90 yards on the night. St. Petersburg are (0-4), and that showed in their 40-14 loss to Foundation. The Lions scored in every quarter, with 12 points coming in the second and 14 coming in the fourth to finish off St. Petersburg. This time around the Lions focused on a more running game, with only 60 yards coming from

throwing plays from the quarterbacks. Titus racked up 42 of those, with the reaming 18 going to Thompson. Jaquan Patterson ran for an impressive 152 yards on 18 carries, and junior Lance Axon showed well, rushing for 46 yards. Sophomore Luke Chase received for 48 yards as well. The Lions next game will come against Corner Stone Christian on the 30th, at home, in an important match which doubles up as both a district matchup and homecoming game.

Ocoee Volleyball Still Winless

by Greyson Everidge

OCOEE – It has been a tough season thus far for the Ocoee Knights volleyball team, who after 11 games, still sit without a win this year. On top of that, the team has failed to win a single set in any match this whole year, losing by either two or three sets to zero. It all started with the first loss to Dr. Phillips, which saw them lose 3-0. The set scores were 25-5, 25-12 and 25-16. Since Dr. Phillips is a traditionally strong team, so not many expected the Knights to walk away with anything. However, the Knights have lost to teams who are weaker, and easier to compete with

for average teams. The losing streak sees losses come against Freedom, Lake Minneola, Edgewater, West Port, Apopka, Colonial, East Ridge, West Orange, Suncoast and Seven Rivers Christian. Again, failing to win a single set, the Knights need to change something if they want any chance of winning a game this season. That responsibility falls on some of the senior team members such as Captain Rachel Flanagan, Shanelle Coleman, Katy Vencatasasawmy, Kylie Stewart and Meredith Farley. Finding the motivation to work

hard is something they have shown in previous years, but they need to tap into that in order to pull some success out of a season which is the last of their high school careers for many of the players. The Knights next game will come against East River on September 27th, at 7 pm. East River has also struggled this season, sitting with a (1-8) record. The game will be an opportunity to win for Ocoee, or at least to win some sets in order to draw some positives to take into the last part of the season.
