The Warriors Take Over the #1 Spot from Wekiva WINTER GARDEN- As the season goes on for the West Orange Warriors their record just keeps running up. On September 14th, West Orange played Timber Creek High School. In the first quarter, West Orange’s Warriors scored 21 points and Timber Creek scored zero. In the second quarter, West Orange scored 13 points and Timber Creek scored 7. By the third quarter, the Warriors were dominating the game and had control. They pushed another 6 points on the wolves and Timber creek scored 0. In the fourth quarter, West Orange scored another 7 and Timber Creek scored 0. The game ended with a score of 47-7 resulting in a win for West Orange High School in an away win. On September 21st, West Orange High School played against Cyprus Creek in another away game. By the end of the first quarter, West Orange High was already up 49-0. By halftime the score for neither the Bears nor the Warriors didn’t change and it was still 49-0. In the third quarter, West Orange kicked off to Cyprus Creek. By the end of the third quarter the score was 63-0 and by the time the end of the fourth quarter came, the game finished with a score of 70-0. Some key players for the Warriors this game were #1; Nemea Hall and #8; Tywon Little. The West Orange Warriors’ next game was on September 28th, at West Orange High School against Wekiva High School’s Mustangs. In a game that featured West Orange scoring 16 points inside the final four minutes to rally for a 30-29 district win over visiting Wekiva, it was a play early in the third quarter that may go down as the most memorable, if not improbable, of all. Wekiva junior Larry Preston was intercepted for the second time at the 11 yard line by David Tyler Jones, but the Mustangs quarterback turned the miscue into points just moments later. Then offensive lineman Gunter Williams forced Jones to fumble during the return, Preston was there to scoop up the ball at the 40. He made his way to the end zone while eluding Matt Thevenot on a diving tackle attempt and laying a stiff arm on Russell Robinson, then spinning off the defender at the 10. Preston’s errant pass and subsequent fumble recovery return gave Wekiva (4-1, 0-1 in 8A, District 4), a 22-7 lead with nine minutes to play in the third quarter. Robinson picked off Preston on his first pass attempt of the night and returned it 57 yards for a score. The Mustangs held a 29-14 advantage before Thevenot recovered a fumble and Austin Chilton registered a sack to help turn the tide for the Warriors. Jones recovered an onside kick for West Orange (5-1, 1-0), ranked No. 7, in between a pair of short touchdown runs by Nemea Hall over the span of one minute, the last of which coming with two minutes, 26 seconds remaining to get the Warriors to within 29-27. The defense then forced a three-and-out to set up a 22-yard field goal for the win from Colton Scharfeld with 16 seconds left. ͞We were in a game like this against Rockledge where it came down to the very end and we let it go,͟said West Orange coach Bob Head in reference to a 49-42 loss on Aug. 31. ͞Tonight they just really fought, and they got an opportunity to make a play and they did it.

Being a Cheerleader WINTER GARDEN - Cheerleading is one of the most controversial sports ever in the athletic world. Generally most people say it is not a sport because they believe it genuinely doesn't represent athleticism and when you think of cheerleading, you automatically think of cheerleaders rallying at school sporting games. Cheerleading is much deeper, having the aspect that it takes hardwork and dedication to do mind blowing stunts and having to compete. Juliana Wilson, a sophomore who cheers for Foundation Academy, provides an excellent take on what it takes to be a cheerleader. “My love for cheerleading started in 7th grade, because that is when I actually started to cheer” stated Juliana. “I’ve been a dancer before cheering and randomly one day I heard over the announcements that cheerleading tryouts were being held. I stayed after school and I ended up making the team and right from there, I instantly loved cheer ever since.”I wanted to find out what is the difference between competitive cheer and regular cheer, so Juliana clarified it with an interesting outtake on the matter. “Competitive cheer is almost scary. High school cheer is much simpler because you’re on the sidelines cheering other people on. For competitive cheer, if we don't do something correct then it puts other people in danger.”Knowing from the way she talked about cheer, I saw that she has a burning passion for the activity and I wanted to know if she considers cheer a sport.“Absolutely, because there are so many ways you can look at cheer but it takes pure athleticism to actually do the stunts and other things we do in competitive cheer” stated Juliana. In the words of Juliana, if you ever want to start cheer I would suggest, “Just go for it, honestly jump in. See if you like it or not because you never know until you try it.”

Winter Park Football

WINTER PARK - Winter Park’s offense struggled to get going with Peter Hayes-Patrick inserted as the primary running back in his season debut, but the No. 6 Wildcats still rolled to a 34-2 win over Timber Creek in a Class 8A matchup at Showalter Field. Hayes-Patrick was limited to just three yards on 9 carries in the first half, and finished the game with 19 carries for 54 yards. The 6-foot, 200-pound running back transferred to Winter Park (5-1, 2-0) from Timber Creek (1-5, 0-1) before the season, but was forced to sit out the first five games after being declared ineligible by the FHSAA. Timber Creek trailed 14-2 coming out of the half when Aiden Lewin intercepted Winter Park quarterback Casey Case deep in Wildcats’ territory. However, The Wolves were unable to convert on the goal line and Winter Park in turn marched down the field on a nine-play, 82-yard drive capped off by a Ja’marri Pringle 26-yard touchdown catch from Case. Marcus Clarke came into the game leading the area in receiving touchdowns. The junior added another two TD catches in the first half, upping his total to 12 on the season.
