West Orange Softball Ranked First in Central Florida
by Greyson Everidge
WEST ORANGE – The West Orange Warriors softball team (22-1) are still the team to beat, and that looks likely to continue. They have established themselves as a major powerhouse in the State since the start of the season. Gaining momentum with every game, the Warriors are on a warpath, with no end in sight.
17-2 against any team is nothing to be ashamed of. The Warriors took those two solid wins into their next two games, which were played against major rivals from the district.
Most recently, the Warriors had large wins against both Milton and Oakcrest. Milton, who are from Massachusetts, came to town to face one of the best from the State of Florida. The Warriors walked away with an easy 15-0 win in that tournament match, against a team who had no real idea what to expect. West Orange showed dominance across all fronts, and that was clearly shown in the score-line.
The first of those, came against Apopka (12-8). Long known as a hard team to play against, the Darters put up a solid fight against the Warriors. While West Orange walked away with a 6-4 win, it gave the Warriors something to think about. While they played well and managed solid hits throughout, it helped show that they are not impenetrable and still have to keep their heads down, working hard to stay focused. With that in mind, the Warriors defeated longtime rivals Olympia (10-8-1) 10-0 just a few days later. It not only helped reiterate their spot in the district as the top contender, but gives some bragging rights to the players on the winning side. West Orange next play East Ridge (7-11) on April 7. Still ranked first for softball by Bright House Sport Networks in the Central Florida area, the Warriors will want to keep doing exactly what has gotten them to this point in the season – win.
West Orange beat Oakcrest by a 15 run margin, scoring two more, but letting two in off the back of their convincing win against Milton. None the less, winning
Foundation Academy Baseball: Young Team Getting Better by Andrea Lerner
WINTER GARDEN - The Foundation Academy baseball team (8-6) was recently defeated in their game against Lake Mary (9-11). The final score was 10-0, and the Foundation Lions were not happy. “We really worked hard but were short of winning against a good opponent,” said Casey Lemke, Senior. Despite the score, the Lions kept up their energy throughout the whole game. They gave everything they had into every run, and tried their best to keep up. Although the match wasn’t in their favor this month, they walked away fully aware of how much they tried. Even with the loss, the team felt ready to get back out onto the field to practice for the next game. “We just didn’t adjust in time,” stated Lemke. In any game, mistakes are going to be made. Not a single team is perfect,
and that is a lesson the Lions learned during their match against Lake Mary. They were able to identify their errors. The trouble was that they weren’t able to fix them in time. As much as they tried to bring up the rear, their opponent overtook them and the scoreboard. “As a leader, I have to help push the team harder than before,” explained Lemke. From this game, the Lions have learned a lot as to how they want to finish out their season. The boys know they need to work harder before they get into districts, despite how young their team is. The age factor plays an enormous role in the game, as the boys admit to not fully being able to forget the bad and move on towards the good. Even with this challenge, they continue to push through to do the best they can. “One mistake isn’t the end of the world,” said Lemke.
As a pitcher, players like Lemke have tried to better their team by setting a good example. Being a senior, Lemke has learned to love his mistakes, for they make him a better person on and off the field. He admits to not being able to do anything without his players behind him. Because of this, he’s constantly striving to lead his team to victory in each and every game. The Foundation boys are excited to take this failure and turn it into success. While they are unsure of what the score might be in their next game, they are confident that they will all work together to put in the maximum amount of effort. The Lions strongly believe in each other on the field, and will use their closeness as an advantage as they finish out the season this year.

Foundation Academy Softball Stronger Than Ever by Andrea Lerner
WINTER GARDEN - The Foundation Academy softball team (12-9), has come out of each game stronger and better than before. Working together, the Foundation Lady Lions have truly realized what it means to play as a team. They are proud to have defeated Lake Mary Prep (0-9) last month in a high scoring game. They had high energy the entire match, along with good defense and hitting. For the girls, nothing seemed to go wrong during the game and they were completely okay with that. “The challenge was not letting myself get down when I strike out,” said Alissa Holton, senior. Not everyone is
going to score a run and that is something the Lady Lions have learned throughout this season. They have worked hard to keep an amazing record, terrified of messing it all up. The team has always come together to encourage one another to do their best, no matter what the scoreboard reads. With this bond, the Foundation girls were able to go far this season. As in any sport, each opponent is going to be different. While some people carry the same styles in pitching and hitting, not every single move is going to be the same. For players like Holton, it is adjusting to the little quirks that make a game difficult. “Adjusting to the pitcher is defi-
nitely something I need to work on,” explained Holton. As the season progressed, she has developed the ability to successfully adjust to differences, but still works at it every game. The Foundation Lions have worked hard this season, and their hard work has definitely paid off. The girls have come together as a team, and feel more like a family than anything else. The closeness of the girls is what holds them together on and off the field. In every game, they know that no matter what the final score turns out to be, they always have each other to lean on.
The Little Garden From Heaven: Jnan Riyad
by Charissa Ward
Fresh fruits and vegetables are a staple to everyone’s diets these days. What to buy, what to eat, does organic mean pesticide free, how to tell if something is ripe or good. How to know if something is in season and how it is grown is always important information to have. We started a small business to bring fresh local and organic produce to people all over Central Florida. When we started this business, we thought this would be something we could
do just a couple of days a week and see how it goes. Now, almost two years later, we realize that people want the best quality produce and they want to know where it came from. We work with as many local farmers as possible to bring fresh produce to our customers. We have also been inspired to try the farming process ourselves. The name Jnan Riyad translates to The Little Garden from Heaven, which we thought goes perfect with what we are trying to do.
What will you find when you come to see us? You will find fruits and vegetable that taste like they should and at a great price too. We want people to try new things and understand the process. So look here in each edition for new tips about what you are eating. Want to know where to find us check out our Facebook page at Jnan Riyad: The Little Garden from Heaven to find us near you. See you at the market!

Olympia Baseball Hitting Hard for 2016 by Andrea Lerner
ORLANDO - The Olympia High School baseball team (13-11) has played hard this season, and their record has shown it. Despite their losses, the Olympia Titans have pulled together in a mutual decision to come out on top. They took a loss against Apopka (15-4) early this month, defeated by a score of 11-4. Even with the dramatic difference in numbers, the team did not let the scoreboard affect their game play. They took each inning the same and tried to do their best to catch up. The Titans defeated Leesburg (7-16) last month. They were ecstatic to take on the win by a score of 8-0. The game didn’t feel like extreme competition for the Titans, but they were thankful that it wasn’t too easy. Throughout the game, the boys stayed confident and continued to play just as hard until they end. The Titans are excited to take on their next competitor, West
Orange (20-1). With such an impressive record, hausted by how much they put into the game. the Olympia boys are practicing harder than ever to see if they can overtake the Warriors. Although they don’t know how the game will Nine Florida League Alumni turn out, they are ready to give it a shot with Suit Up for Opening Day their best effort. by Phil Chinnery As one of the most competitive opponents, the coaches of the Titans are trying to get rid of any fear still lingering. They want each and every young man to feel confident in his position and ability to play the game. Even if they lose, the Olympia boys know that they will leave their own home completely exWhether it’s a realistic goal or not, nearly everyone who has ever worn a baseball jersey has a fantasy of playing in the big leagues. For many, that dream dissipated once Little League ended. Others take it a step further to high school baseball, and still fewer have the opportunity to play in college. Making the next jump, from college to the pros, is a huge obstacle for many. However, a select few are able to make their dreams come true … and none have the same story as their teammate. by Andrea Lerner The Florida Collegiate Summer League was founded in 2004 with the hope of helping college players reach the ultimate goal of playing in Major League Baseball. In the twelve years since the league was founded, more than 325 players have been drafted or signed by pro ball clubs. While some players lasted only a few years in the minors, sixteen players have now reached the MLB … with plenty more on the way. A few of the Florida League’s alumni are household names from DivisionI schools. Jacob deGrom, the 2014 National League Rookie of the Year for the Mets, played his college and summer league games at Conrad Park, home of the Stetson Hatters. Milwaukee Brewers All-Star catcher Jonathan Lucroy also suited up for two Florida summers (Sanford in 2005 and Winter Park in 2006) before being drafted out of Louisiana Lafayette. Fellow Brewer Jimmy Nelson, a former Alabama pitcher, also played for DeLand and was taken in the 2nd round of the draft in 2010. The beauty of baseball is that talent can be found at all levels of play. For every deGrom, Lucroy and Nelson, you have a Shane Greene, who was a 15th round pick out of Daytona State College in 2009. Then there’s Johnny Monell, a journeyman catcher who played for Seminole State in Sanford, FL. Roberto Perez, who was taken in the 33rd round of the 2008 draft, suited up for the Florida Gateway College Geckos before making it as a catcher with the Cleveland Indians. The common thread between all of these players is that they played in the Florida League, and were exposed to professional scouts. In addition to the players above, three more … Dee Gordon, Chris Heston and Jabari Blash … also find themselves on the Opening Day rosters of their respective MLB ball club. The nine players on rosters to start the year is a record for the league. Another five are on their team’s 40-man roster, meaning they have the potential to be called up as well at some point in 2016. Every Florida League game provides Central Florida communities with affordable, family-friendly entertainment. For the players, it is a chance to showcase their skills in front of scouts as they continue to chase their dreams. For the fans, it’s a great way to spend an evening in beautiful Florida. And for the kids, it’s an opportunity to watch America’s past time, and maybe start having dreams of their own. The Florida League season starts on June 2 in Sanford. Bishop Moore Softball on Win Streak
by Greyson Everidge
ORLANDO – The Bishop Moore softball team (19-2) is proving to be a major player among competing softball programs, and with good reason. They have kept their head down all season, and it’s earned them a near perfect record of (192), as well as a perfect district record of (4-0). The Hornets have won all their games in the last few weeks, and have put together a solid 12 game win streak. This comes against a wide range of opponents, proving their versatility in all situations. The versatility, paired with their work ethic, combines for a deadly combination and can be contributed to their recent success. Recently, the Hornets have beaten Seminole (7-13) 12-4, Lake Highland Prep (8-5-1) 10-3, Colonial (4-11) 5-4, Winter Park (12-10) 12-2, and Titusville (2-15) 4-1. Most of the games played ended in blowouts for the Hornets, with the exception of the Colonial Grenadiers. Colonial gave Bishop Moore a run for their money, which many would not have expected despite the fact that Colonial has been known to cause some teams close calls. The rest of the wins were routine at this point for the Hornets. They have built up a reputation as a strong team, and are expected to win almost every game they go into. That in mind, they
don’t let the pressure get to them, and use it to move forward and take each game at a time. The next few weeks will prove critical for Bishop Moore, as they look to better their record
further and improve upon their district record, to try and get the first seed going into the playoffs. The Hornets next game comes against Orlando Christian Prep (6-6) on April 5.

Lake Highland Girls Lacrosse Ranked First in Nation by Greyson Everidge
ORLANDO – The Lake Highland girl’s lacrosse team (16-1) has been on a roll as of late, and with wins against the best of the best week in and week out, they are no doubt worthy. The Highlanders efforts have earned them the number one ranked spot, not only statewide, but nationally.
one should things stay the same as they are right now. Other than that loss, they have beaten some of the best teams in the State. The Highlanders beat number two
It hasn’t come easy for Lake Highland. They have arguably one of the toughest schedules in the state, yet they seem to be handling it with no problems. They have played six of the top ten ranked teams in the state, and beaten five of them. That achievement in itself is worthy of praise, but it doesn’t end there. Lake Highland defeated the number 2 ranked team in Georgia, Marietta Walton.
Ponte Vedra, number five Fort Lauderdale St. Thomas Aquinas, number seven St. Johns Bartram Trail, number eight Barron Collier, and number ten Oviedo. The win against Barron Collier, by a score of 19-6, gave the Highlanders that fifth win against top ten teams in nearly as many games. Lake Highland takes the pressure well as they have done all season long. It doesn’t faze them or unnerve them, they seem to thrive off of it. The next step is to keep their 11 game win streak intact as the season wraps up. Continuing to win games is what will continue to keep them ranked, and they need to wrap up the district seeds, as only the district winner moves on to regionals the way lacrosse is set up.
The only setback for Lake Highland, in this case a loss, came against number three ranked Olympia (18-2) by a tight score of 15-13. The loss was the only one of the campaign so far for Lake Highland Prep, and looks like it could be their only
With districts looming, Lake Highland will continue to work hard to prove to everyone just why they deserve the number one nationally ranked spot.
Windermere Prep Baseball: Working Harder This Season by Greyson Everidge
WINDERMERE – The Windermere Prep Lakers are under preforming as of late, lacking any real drive and decisiveness to get their season back on a winning track. They sit with a (8-13) record, knowing they need to improve. Dipping rankings and lowering expectations are just a few of the issues that continue to pop up, and the Lakers will no doubt want to fix those issues to have a better shot in the district playoffs. Of their last ten games, the Lakers have lost eight. Of those eight, the past five in a row have been defeats handed out to Windermere Prep. They seem to be in a slump, and recovering with some wins is crucial to getting back on the right track.
Most recently, they lost to Troup County (12-5) and Regis Jesuit (5-1) by heavy margins. Troup has proven solid this year and never looked to be an easy game for the Lakers. However, Windermere never got much going, especially on the offensive side, and gave up a series of hits which saw them lose 6-1 by the time it was all said and done. Certainly, things could have gone better for the Lakers. What is concerning is the manner of the losses Windermere is accumulating. Each seems to be similar in nature, with the same issues coming up over and over. Against Jesuit, who are solid opposition, it was the same story. Windermere looked timid, and failed to have any
inspiration or spark to help push their offense. They hit in two runs on the night, but still lost by a sizeable margin of 9-2. That loss was their fifth in a row, adding to the losing streak which continues to hang over the team. The Lakers next game will come against their rivals The First Academy (13-4), who are a strong side and bitter rival, which makes this game that much more important. It’s needed at this stage in the season to win every game, and with an active losing streak an upcoming game against a strong side the next couple of days doesn’t look promising for Windermere Prep.

West Orange Lacrosse Strong Competitor for District Title by Matthew Anetrella
The West Orange Boys Lacrosse (10-4) team has dominated the majority of the teams they have faced all season and has a strong chance to win the District Tournament for the third straight year. They have a solid record of 7-3 at home and 3-1 in away games. They just came off a fresh win at home against The First Academy Royals (9-6), playing tough on defense and only allowing 4 goals. While on offense, the Warriors scored 10 goals to seal the victory. There doesn’t seem to be a team in their District that can stop the Warriors from winning Districts once again.
Sophomore Luke Hurbanis, was Player of the Game for the Royals for shooting 3 shots on goal and making all of them, counting for 3 of the 4 goals the Royals had in the game. Senior Logan Coon was credited for the other goal, but the Warriors offense was too strong for the Royals defense to keep up with. The Warriors tallied 2 goals in the 1st quarter, 3 in the 2nd, 4 goals in the 3rd and managed to shut down the Royals offense that quarter by not letting them score any goals, and in the 4th the Warriors capped off the game sliding 1 goal in to finish the game.
The Warriors are undefeated in all district games they have played this year (5-0) and look to be the #1 seed in the District Tournament when the regular season is over. The Warriors next match is a home conference game vs. East Ridge (6-5) on Tuesday, April 5 @ 7p. A win against East Ridge would definitely be a confidence boost for the Warriors to take into the District Tournament. Make sure to come support the Warriors on their run to win another District Title.

Windermere Prep Boys Lacrosse: Playing Competitively by Andrea Lerner
WINDERMERE - The Windermere Prep boys’ lacrosse team (4-7) has held on tight to finding their balance. While their goal is to strengthen their record, they also hope to become tighter as a team.
One of the many games they have learned from was their match against Montverde Academy (4-
Recently, they accomplished a significant win against International Community (5-9) late last month. The final score was 17-11, leaving the Windermere Lakers feeling proud and accomplished. The game was full of high energy and competition, and the Windermere boys were ecstatic to come out on top. Other than the wins, the team is also thankful for their losses. The Lakers are firm believers that the games they lose only make them stronger. After each game they lose, they go back and analyze what they did wrong. From there, they decide how they could have fixed it, or how they could prevent it from happening in a future game. This tactic is helpful in getting the team to play stronger.
As the season heads toward wrapping up, the Windermere boys have decided to keep coming together during practice and playing as a family. The closer they are, the better they play. Coaches and teammates are ready to take on more opponents and raise the score. Increasing their record is definitely on the agenda, but becoming better players is their priority.
1) in March. The ending score was 21-7, and the Lakers went home completely frazzled. While most of them agreed they sincerely tried their best, some players admitted to not giving it their all. Communication is key for the team, and they’ve definitely learned to have it more often.
Windermere Prep Softball: Working on Rebuilding by Andrea Lerner
WINDERMERE - The Windermere Prep softball team (0-5) has struggled this season to play hard on the field. The team has been going through major changes, namely a new coach, and finding it hard to adapt. Without a win so far, the Windermere Lady Lak-
ers have resorted to scrimmage games against younger travel ball teams. They’ve realized that they need to work on playing as a unit and really trusting each other, before they take it out to represent their school. Their new coach has been adapting just as they have. The girls have lost against teams such as The First Academy, Montverde Academy, and Trinity Prep. All of these were low scoring matches, resulting in the loss of 1-0. In each game, the Lady Lakers really have tried their best to put it all out there. The end result has only shown them how much harder they need
to work. As the seniors on the team are about to graduate, they have found it the hardest to adjust. Being there last year to play the sport for the team, they’ve wished they could have ended the year strongly, instead of feeling like they are starting over. Trying to be positive, the senior girls have made it their mission to impact the younger girls on the team, to work hard to create a strong, balanced unit of players. While the Lady Lakers are getting ready to take on other teams, it is the small scrimmage matches and practices that will make or break them. The girls are ready to meet their full potential, and they hope that this season is the only one they will spend adjusting. It’s definitely practice for the newly developed team, but they are ready to do everything they can to get better.

West Orange Baseball Secure First Seed in District 9A by Greyson Everidge
ALTAMONTE SPRINGS – West Orange Baseball (182), who are already having a great season, took another important step towards their ultimate goal of a State Championship on Friday night after a 5-0 win against tough opponents and district competitors Lake Brantley (17-5). That win on Friday night not only completes a sweep of Lake Brantley, but takes the Warriors to 6-0 in the District, meaning they have now secured the first seed with two games left to play. The first of the wins against the Lake Brantley Patriots ended in a 4-3 win for the Warriors, who looked better that night. The second win ended in a 5-0 score, with a combined seven innings of scoreless play. Doug Nikhazy and relief pitcher Cole Beavin of the Warriors threw for the scoreless innings, with Nikhazy striking out 11 in 5.2 innings. Beavin earned the four-out save for the Warriors. “It was a good game for me but more importantly the
team,” said Nikhazy. “It shows how well we work to-
for West Orange. Chris Seise and Bobby Head helped drive in the other two. West Orange has been gaining momentum as the season progresses, and the series against Lake Brantley was no different. The only minor setback comes in important senior Nathan Schreckengost, who was ejected and now faces missed games because of a bat flip in the seventh inning.
gether and how hard we work all the time, but there is still a lot to do and a long way to go.” Warrior player and Flagler signee Ethan Jones continues to do well at the plate, as he drove in three of the five runs
Despite already securing the first seed in the district, West Orange still have two games to play. Both will come against bitter rivals Olympia (13-11), who have struggled in some areas so far this season. Despite the Titans average record, the Warriors will no doubt come out strong to enter the district tournament with a perfect (8-0) record, which will be played at Olympia High School come April 19.
500 Thank you’s from the Attardi Family
by Mike Attardi
Our paper in New Jersey is celebrating our 500th issue of the Jersey Sporting News. That is the sister paper of the Florida Sporting News. What an accomplishment by anyone’s standards. We say this with a humble but proud voice. Our loyal advertisers are the ones who should be celebrated. Our publication has been such an asset to local high school sporting programs and our advertisers should be rewarded. Our staff has always seen our work here at our paper as a community service and support group for high school sports. Our mission over 21 years ago, was to help local student-athletes receive more college athletic scholarships. We have achieved our goal and during these years with the help from parents, educators and coaches, we have increased college scholarship offers by 73%. This 500th issue is a true testament that our readers, staff and advertisers have been working together on making a difference in our local communities. When we started JSN, we never knew the impact we would have on local
sports. It was a dream of ours to produce a positive and respected paper that every parent, coach, athletic director, educator and advertiser would embrace. We are proud of the fact that a large paper like the Asbury Park Press and a smaller start-up papers, copied our ideas and made sports coverage in Monmouth and Ocean counties real news. As they say, “Copying is the highest form of flattery.” Please don’t see this as a dig, I want to commend my competition on taking the challenge for more local sports coverage. As we celebrate of 500th issue, we only hope that you have seen the Attardi family as friends to high school sports. My family and I started this paper for all the right reasons and we know that our schools appreciate us and our efforts for over 21 years. The Attardi family has been ingrained and a permanent fixture here on the Jersey shore since 1931. With three generations of athletes and educators, we are humbled and proud to be part of our local sports history. If our father was still alive, he would
be still delivering our paper as he did for over a decade. He would still be talking about how Long Branch High School won the State championship in football his senior year. He would also tell you how proud he was when his son received a full athletic scholarship to college. We hope that you enjoy and celebrate with us our commitment of excellence for over 21 years of service to our community. Our 500th issue of local sports is a true testament that our high schools, parents, advertisers and friends really support our mission to help our studentathletes. The Attardi family would like to thank everyone who has contributed to our dream. With much respect and Love, Michael Attardi

Ocoee Baseball Runs Strong This Season
by Andrea Lerner
OCOEE - The Ocoee High School baseball team (10-12) has done nothing but strive for greatness this season. With almost an even record, the boys have worked together to pull off a multitude of wins.
As they finish up the rest of the season, the boys are confident about where they will go. With each other,
Their most recent win took place late last month against Wekiva (3-17). The game finished with a final score of 6-3, advancing the Ocoee Knights even further. The team put in all their effort for this game, even though they felt as if there wasn’t much competition. They went in strong and finished strong, just how they like to do it. One of the toughest losses the Knights are still trying to get over, is the game against Forest (13-7). The score was not a nice one for the Ocoee boys, losing by 14-0. The March game left the team defeated and clearly bothered. It was their goal after this game to pick each other back up and get right back out on the field.
heart and mind are in the game, the score will come out as deserved. Throughout the season, they have had many lessons learned in losing because of little to no effort. As a unit, they’ve made it clear that maximum effort will always be the case from here on out. The Ocoee Knights are determined to come out on top this year. For seniors, most are disappointed that they will be leaving their high school field in just a few weeks. But for those who are going on to play college ball, they are ready to pass down their legacy and enter an entirely different world.

Orlando City Soccer Sit First Place in Eastern Conference by Greyson Everidge
CITRUS BOWL – The Orlando City Lions, in their second season as an MLS club, currently sits in first place in the Eastern Conference standings, ahead of the Montreal Impact, with 8 points after four games. While it’s still early days in the title race, the quick start is a testament to the team and the work ethic they show starting from day one of the campaign. The Lions moved first into first place in the standings fresh off the back of a solid victory against the Portland Timbers, who won the MLS Cup for the first time in their history last season. The Lions captured a 4-1 win in front of a crowd of over 30,000 fans late on Sunday night.
It started in the 13th minute as Kaka, in his first appearance of the season, found Seb Hines off a free kick to which the defender calmly headed in to give Orlando the lead.
attack with a shot which found the bottom right hand corner of the net. The goal gave Kaka two assists and one goal on the night, a fine performance for the captain from Brazil.
The lead was doubled just over 15 minutes later, when in the 32nd minute Brek Shea found Kaka on the edge of the box for a give-and-go to set up Shea for the shot, who used the outside of his foot to bend in a stinging shot which left the Timbers keeper with no chance for a save. The goal was Shea’s first in the MLS since April of 2012, and first for the Orlando City Lions.
Kevin Molino scored his first MLS career goal after tearing his ACL last season, an injury which kept him out for most the season. Kaka gave up the penalty kick to his teammate, who made no mistakes while finding the left hand side of the net from 12 yards out.
Kaka added another goal to the scoresheet when in the 48th minute, he capped off a fine counter
The Lions next play the Philadelphia Union, on Friday, April 9 at 7pm.
