Dr. Phillips Football Season Recap By: Greyson Everidge

DR. PHILLIPS – The Dr. Phillips Panthers, who have always been a strong team in the Orlando area, had a decent season this year, but know that they have room to improve for the coming year. Losses this year are unusual for the Panthers, who will look to correct the mistakes made to make them an exceptional team yet again. The Panthers finished with a (9-4) record, going (4-0) in the district this year. Of their nine wins this season, a majority of them were by large score margins, often times stretching anywhere from 35 to 45 points. The large wins were a testament to the offense of the Panthers, who showed just how dangerous they could be to other teams in the area. The Panthers losses were expected, with losses coming from teams such as West Orange, who beat Dr. Phillips

41-34. They also lost to the Apopka Darters, Mainland, and Osceola. The losses were 22-20, 28-7, and 20-19 respectively.

Copa America Soccer Comes to Orlando

Led by Head Coach Rodney Wells, the Panthers will have a jam packed 2016 season, after pulling up a little short during the 2015-2016 school year. Dr. Phillips suffered minor losses and major ones alike, losing the Orange Crate to West Orange, who went on to play in the State Semifinals.

ORLANDO – The Copa America Cup, one of the most famous soccer tournaments in the world, is coming to the Camping World Stadium this June. The Cup, which is held in different locations across the country, is making its way to the Sunshine State for three matches. Part of the Centenario, which is the 100th year anniversary of the Cup, is the hype surrounding the tournament which shows the continued growth of the sport in the United States.

The year was not all bad however, with the Panthers younger players showing real promise for the coming seasons, building upon past experiences to grow stronger and faster. Key senior Jaquarius Bargnare signed his letter of intent to the University of Central Florida, where he will play Division One football right in his backyard. The wide receiver was sold after a visit in December, when he committed to play for the Knights and never looked back.

The first of three matches played was Costa Rica vs Paraguay, which was played on June 4th, and ended in a 0-0 draw as the two teams ended level. Neither side could find the finishing touch they so desperately needed, which put them at a disadvantage going into their second or third game where the sides will each play the host team, the US. The second match was Bolivia against Panama, which was played on the 6th, and ended in a 2-1 win for Panama. The outcome was always going to be a tossup, as neither team are high profile nor expected to do well in the tournament. It was however a good solid game for spectators who remained neutral throughout the game, as two even sides fought to the end to make their countries proud. The last and most anticipated game was played this past Wednesday, the 8th, which saw Brazil take on Haiti in front a pro-Brazil crowd. The game ended in a huge blowout for Brazil, who won 7-1 on the night in a flashy show with goals coming from stars like Coutinho, who got a hat trick to help push Brazil towards the championship. The game also marked the elimination of Haiti, who failed to impress in a tough group. With the end of the Brazil match, the tournaments stint in Orlando ends, as bigger games are set to be played in bigger cities and stadiums in spots scattered throughout the nation.

West Orange Baseball End Historic Season by Greyson Everidge

WINTER GARDEN – The West Orange Warriors baseball team were knocked out in late May, after reaching the State Semifinals after winning the Regional Championship, defeating the number two seeded team University. Despite being knocked out in the State Semis, it was the first time in Warrior program history that they made it to the State Tournament. The Warriors ended the season on a (27-3) overall record, and even grabbed the first ranked spot heading into what would ultimately be their last game. Throughout the course of the season, the Warriors won both narrowly and convincingly, beating bitter rivals Apopka, Dr. Phillips, Olympia, and the newly added Lake Brantley in their district. The Warriors showed dominance in the division early on, and were always in the driving seat as mid-season approached. They subsequently locked down the number one spot in

their district early on, and unsurprisingly took home the District title. They then went on to the Regional’s with tons of confidence, defeating first Apopka and then University to take home the trophy which put them through to the State Tournament. It was in the Semifinals that the Warriors run ended, after they lost in a tight 3-2 game to Stoneman Douglas. Despite the teams efforts and other success, it was disappointing to see them fall just short of their goal of winning the State Championship for the first time. A strong senior class leaves the program, as nine seniors graduated in the 2016 year to move on to play college ball, including Ethan Jones, Nathan Schrekengost, Chris Siese, and Tyler Baum. With their loss, the leave a legacy for future classes to follow and hopefully build upon in the coming years. In the meantime, a strong underclass will take their place, using everything they’ve learned from their mentors along the way.

West Orange Football Season Recap by Greyson Everidge

WINTER GARDEN – For the players, coaches and fans alike, this year’s football season was one to remember for West Orange Warriors. They won not only their district, but regional’s too, and advanced to the State Tournament, to which they ultimately lost to the Kissimmee Kowboys. The drive of the team was one to be remembered, with key seniors being rewarded in the end – a scholarship number totaling nine players to various schools across the country. Among those nine players were the likes of Eddie McDoom, Woody Barrett, Ben Bollinger, Jeffery Kennedy, and Stone Forsyth. McDoom will play at the University of Michigan, after de-committing from Oregon, whom he originally committed to earlier in the year. The sought after wide receiver had offers from numerous other schools, including Notre Dame, Alabama and Auburn. Woody Barrett, signed his letter of intent to Auburn University, after the quarterback shook off serious interest from a number of other high profile schools. Ben Bollinger, who was underrated in the viewpoint of many, singed his litter of intent to the Air Force Academy, where he will join the service next fall in Colorado Springs. Kennedy will play at Southeastern University, while Stone Forsyth will play for the Florida Gators as an offensive lineman.

Doug Flutie - NFL Quarterback Flipped the coin for the start of the game

Other players will play at the collegiate level, leaving behind a legacy for the younger players who have already started to court serious attention after a record setting season which played out this season. The Warriors won the battle of the Orange Crate, taking the crate from the Dr. Phillips Panthers, and also beat serious rivals Apopka High School for the second year in a row during the regular season – however this time they also finished off the Darters in the playoffs. Their one loss, which was cut down to a fluke game, was the turning point for the team who set their goals high and never stopped driving for a State Championship ring. Next season, we will get to see the Warriors take the field again after months and months of tough training and preparation.
