Dr. Phillips Baseball Off To Average Start

By Greyson Everidge

DR. PHILLIPS – The Dr. Phillips Panthers are off to an average start for the 2017 season, sitting with a record of (5-4-1) and a district record of (4-2). Head Coach Mike Bradley has led the team to successful seasons in the past, and will no doubt want to do the same this year – starting in a district which has proven to be challenging in the past. This year is no different.

clude the likes of Winter Park, Dr. Phillips and Lake Nona.

Looking to get back on track, the Panthers followed up with two wins in a double header against Cypress Creek. The first game ended with a score of 12-1, with the second game ending tighter with the Panthers coming out on top 2-1.

After beating Freedom the second time around followed up by a first game win in a double header series against Boone, the Panthers lost to Boone and then Colonial by scores of 8-2 and 1-0.

The first game for the Panthers ended in a 6-6 tie against University High School, but was immediately followed up by a win against Lyman by a convincing 5-1 margin. The Panthers then played Lake Brantley,

Dr. Phillips then lost to Freedom High by a score of 2-1, who have surprised many this season after winning against many teams that they wouldn’t have been pegged to do at the start of the season. These teams in-

The Panthers next games come up against Lake Nona, Tavares and oak Ridge – followed up by a rivalry game on April 11th against West Orange as the end of the regular season comes to a close.

Dr. Phillips Softball Off To A Great Start

By Greyson Everidge

DR. PHILLIPS – The Dr. Phillips Panthers, who are typically known for their strong baseball and football programs have another team for people to look out for, with the softball team having a (12-4) record overall, with a (6-1) record in the district. Should the Panthers keep their pace, they have a serious chance of winning not only the district chance but a strong shot at making a run in the regional and state tournament. Head Coach Michael Gale and the strong squad of seniors and juniors have led their underclassmen in a season for the books so far, creating a team atmosphere of hard work which will serve

the program for years to come. It was seen in their opening part of the season, where the Panthers won eight of their first nine games for the year. Wins included those against Bishop Moore by a score of 2-1, Port St. Lucie by a score of 20-0, Winter Park by a score of 5-3 and Ocoee by a score of 5-1. Of those first nine games which saw eight wins, the Panthers lost to Apopka by a score of 8-5. Apopka are always favorites in the district, having won championships in recent years. Other wins this season for Dr. Phillips have included games against Boone, Freedom and Cy-

press Creek. While it has been a solid season so far, they still face stiff competition and matchups later on in the season before districts against Winter Park and Apopka again, as well as West Orange. West Orange seem to be the team to beat this year, so having a strong showing against the Warriors will be a good indication to whether or not the Panthers team can hang at the top level this season. Should Dr. Phillips compete with West Orange and Apopka, they could be the dark horse the district needs to mix things up which have been stagnant over the last couple of years.

Olympia Softball Look To Get Back To Winning Ways

By Greyson Everidge

WINDERMERE – The Olympia Titans softball team, under Head Coach Stephanie Manny, have a current record of (5-6) overall and (2-3) record in district play. With enough time to reverse their losing record into a winning one for the district playoffs, the Titans will look forward to wins in their final remaining games this regular season. After winning their first game against Ocoee by a score of 8-7 in a thrilling opener which came down to the last inning, they lost to both Boone and Apopka by scores of 6-1 and 3-1 respectively. The Apopka game was the first district loss of the season, and put the Titans into a sort of one trance which has seen them trade of wins for loss in a pattern of sorts.

Olympia won the following game against Lake Nona 13-4 only to lose the next one against East

The Titans beat Freedom and Wekiva 11-1 and 12-1 before losing their next match – a district one – against Lake Brantley by a score of 8-1. Approaching districts, the next games are crucial for the Titans. A double header against Apopka and matchups against Dr. Phillips and West Orange two weeks later will decide whether or not the Titans come out of the regular season with a good enough record to set them up for a post season run.

Ridge away by a score of 9-3. They then went on to win against Wekiva by a tight score of 9-8 before losing again – this time to South Lake by a score of 10-1. Following the pattern, they lost their next game to West Orange 10-2, before winning their next two games.

West Orange Lacrosse Go 15 Undefeated And Score 292 Goals Before First Loss by Greyson Everidge WINTER GARDEN – The West Orange Warriors Boys Lacrosse team are one of the teams to beat this year in the state, after they won their first 15 games in the 2017 season. Playing some notable opposition, the Warriors got the number one ranked spot in the state for a short while. They now sit at number 14 in the state after suffering two losses, but their record still stands at a very impressive (15-2). The Warriors have also won all seven of their district games so far, giving them the number one ranked spot in the district with a record of (7-0).

Warriors, who also have an exceptional defense. The first loss for the Warriors came on March 28th to Lake Mary by a score of 11-6, ending the 15 game win streak. The Warriors then lost their second game to Bishop Moore that same week, by a score of 15-7. The Warriors still maintain a very strong position in the state, and are favorites to win their district after having an undefeated run in district play. Should the Warriors win they would become the 5th Warrior sports team to win a district tournament and will move onto regionals where they also have a great shot at winning the regional championship to advance on to states.

After the first 15 games, the Warriors also totaled an insane 292 goals for, with only 65 goals scored against. In their first game of the season, the Warriors played Boone, whom they defeated by a score of 16-8. Throughout their impressive win streak, the Warriors defeated tough opponents in Montverde, Olympia, Dr.Phillips,

by Kaden Bauer a six game losing streak. This will have to have left a sour taste in head coach Rabon Smith’s mouth A six game losing streak can never be seen as anything less than disappointing, but for a normally impressive Panthers side this is especially bad. The Panthers finished off last season with an impressive 17-5 record and they were looking to be on track to replicate that record this season until this disastrous slump that they have found themselves in. Rabon Smith will be doing everything in his power to put things back on track for the Panthers and make them a winning team once again. He can’t have any more double digit loses like the ones they faced against the Bishop Moore Hornets (17-2) or the Boone Braves (135) if they have any hope of turning things around. The scores of those games were 15-0 and 17-7 respectively. The strange part about this slump is that the Panthers are still a dominant force within their district with a 6-1 record and a solid second place standing as of now. Their only loss in their district thus far has come from the crushing 15-0 defeat that came from the impressive Bishop Moore Hornets side as mentioned earlier. The Panthers next game is a district game against the First Academy Eagles (5-5). The Panthers have squared off against the Eagles earlier this season in a game that ended in a 10-7 win in Dr. Phillips favor and they will hope to win this one too in order to get out of this recent slump in performance. Smith will no doubt be looking to use this game against the First Academy as a way to get his Panthers side back on track and raise his team’s confidence once again. This confidence will be important once the playoffs start Smith and the rest of the Panthers will need all the help they can get if they wish to make a run for states this year.

Foundation Academy Baseball Midseason

by Kaden Bauer

FOUNDATION ACADEMY – The 20162017 Spring Baseball season is in full swing for the Foundation Academy Lions. Currently the Lions are holding a somewhat disappointing record of (45) and are holding down the middle of their district with a record of (3-3). New Head Coach Derreck Santiago will be hoping to improve the (11-101) season that the Lions recorded last year under Brent Casteel.

the back half of the game. They scored four of their five combined runs for these games in the first inning which shows the drop in concentration and effort for the rest of the game. Santiago will be looking forward to leading his team out of this slump.

The Lions are coming off of two very tough losses of 13-4 and 6-1, both of which came at the hands of the Masters Academy Eagles (6-4) who lead the district with an impressive undefeated record (4-0). Santiago will be worried about the excessive amount of runs being allowed in these two games (a total of 19) and the lack of runs scored for his side (5). If you break the game down into the individual innings, the Lions conceded runs in all but three innings which should be a cause of concern for the Lions pitching game and field coverage in both the infield and outfield. Foundation Academy are also not putting up impressive numbers on

Looking forward, the Foundation Academy Lions next game will be a home game on April fourth against the Cornerstone Charter Academy Ducks (3-7). While the Ducks don’t boast the most impressive record the Lions shouldn’t take this game lightly as it is still a district game which should bring out the best of the Cornerstone Charter Academy side. The Lions have some time off before this game to regroup and evaluate the Ducks side and fix their own problems. The Ducks on the other hand will be facing tough opposition from the Masters Academy before they square off with the Lions, giving Santiago time to further evaluate his opponents. In recap, the Foundation Academy Lions started the season off relatively well but have recently hit a slump and are looking to reverse their fortunes and go back to their winning ways. Only time will tell how the rest of the Lions season will turn out.

Foundation Academy Softball Midseason

by Kaden Bauer

FOUNDATION ACADEMY – The Foundation Academy Lions Softball team currently hold a losing (4-6) overall record as well as a losing (2-3) district record but still end up about mid-table in the district standings. The Lady Lions are currently on a two game losing streak and head coach Randall Ames has most definitely recognized at this point that he needs to change the team’s fortunes if they want a shot at making a run for playoffs and maybe even states. The Lady Lions seem to like one sided games, whether they be on the winning side or the losing side. In their past six games the victor has come out on top with at least ten more runs than their

opposition. In these past six games the Lady Lions have four wins and two loses. The four wins came against the Masters Academy Eagles (8-4), Jones Fightin’ Tigers (0-5), the Lake Mary Prep Griffins (0-5), and the Legacy Charter Softball Team (3-7) with scores of 11-1, 16-0, 11-0, and 13-3 respectively. While these are very good numbers and are encouraging to the Foundation Academy Softball program, the two losses that followed these wins are unnerving. The Lady Lions lost back to back games against the Cornerstone Charter Academy Ducks (11-2) and Ocoee Knights (7-8-1) with devastating scores of 17-0 and 16-2. Ames will be concerned with the team’s recent slump and will be hoping to go back to their winning ways soon.

The Lady Lions next game is a home game against the Orlando Christian Prep Warriors (2-2) on April third. The Lions have plenty of time to regroup after the recent losses and can use this upcoming game as a perfect opportunity to win and get their hopes up once again. The Lady Lions can use the Warriors as a good launching pad to rebound from the losses and go back to their winning ways. Ames just has to focus on getting the team’s spirit back up and everything else should fall back in place for the Lady Lions. The teams future is looking bright if they can overcome their recent troubles and no one can tell how far this team can go.

West Orange Baseball Ranked Eighth in the State

By Greyson Everidge

WINTER GARDEN – At the start of the 2017 season, the Warriors baseball team were expected to be one of the stronger teams in both their district and state standings. At the halfway point in the season that has held up, with the Warriors sitting with a (10-3) record overall with a (2-1) record in the district after only three games. They are also currently ranked 8th in the state, which could go up with another set of strong performances. Under Head Coach Jesse Marlo, the Warriors started the new season with a game against Venice High School, where the Warriors won away at Venice by a score of 7-2 to get off on the right step. They followed up that game with a win against Sarasota away a day later by a tigher score of 6-5. Facing good competition from other districts in the state at the start of the season al-

lowed the Warriors to objectively asses their team and work on aspects of their game that they couldn’t when playing teams that they

normally play throughout the season. The Warriors then played their first rival game of the year against Ocoee in front of their first home crowd of the season, winning 2-1 in a hotly contested game which saw drama caused by old rivalries and former teammates. The hard fought win set them up perfectly for a more routine game against The First Academy, which the Warriors won 11-0. The Warriors first loss of the season came away against Bishop Moore on March 7th by a score of 3-1, which was followed by their second loss on March 10th by a score of 3-0 by Trinity Christian Academy. Their final loss so far this season came against Apopka by a score of 10-2, which is a matchup which is always interesting because of the history between the two sides. Last year it was West Orange who came out on top, winning twice in the year in a game which always seems to shift sides. The Warriors next two games come against Wekivia and Don Bosco Prep, and on a run of four games undefeated the Warriors will be looking to extend their streak to six.

Olympia Baseball Face Tough Next Few Weeks

By Greyson Everidge

WINDERMERE - The Olympia Titans baseball team currently sit with a winning record of (11-4-1), with a (2-0) record in the district. Although they will look to win the district championship at the end of the season, some minor correctional work is in place to get the Titans back on track, who have lost three out of their last five games midway through the season. The Titans started with three wins from their first four games, winning away against Bishop Moore by a score of 6-3, Lake Mary by a score of 5-3 and Osceola by a score of 9-6. They tied Winter Springs by a score of 0-0.

Olympia lost their first game of the season to Hagerty by a score of 7-1 on February 28th, but have since made up for the losses, beating Lake Minneola, Cypress Creek, Wekiva (twice), Evans and Hanes City by scores of 10-0, 5-1, 5-4, 11-7, 11-1, and 2-1 respectively. The Titans then suffered their third loss of the season against Ocoee by a score of 6-4 after going on a winning streak which saw them win six in a row. Now, almost through the end of March the Titans have lost two of their last four. The first loss came against Ocoee, with the second loss against Bolles

from Jacksonville broken up a win against San Gorgonio. They followed up the loss against Bolles with a win against University Christian by a score of 4-2. The Titans next few games start with a district match doubleheader against Lake Brantley on March 29th and 31st, followed up with another district double header against Apopka on April 5th and 7th. They then play West Orange and Dr. Phillips the week after, meaning this is a crucial few weeks for the Titans in terms of securing a strong spot in the district playoffs.

Dr. Phillips Girls Lacrosse Unbeaten Season

By Greyson Everidge

The Dr. Phillips girls’ lacrosse team has roared through the regular season with little resistance, but the Panthers know they may have to scratch and claw their way through the postseason. After finishing the regular season unbeaten, DP (14-0) now must face some of the state’s best competition in next week’s District 12 tournament at Bishop Moore. The Panthers, ranked No. 2 in Florida by LaxPower.com and seeded No. 1 for district play, will face fourth-seeded The First Academy (113) at 5:30 p.m., Wednesday, in the first of two semifinal games. Second-seeded Bishop Moore (12-4) will play third-seeded Olympia (11-6) in the other semi-

final at 7:30 p.m. The championship game is 7 p.m., Friday. The top four teams in each district compete for a title, with only the champion advancing to the first-round play-in games on April 13. All four teams in District 12 are ranked in the top 25 in the LAXpower.com state poll. “Our district may be the toughest in the state,” said DP coach Bill Morse, whose team is ranked No. 1 in the Sentinel Super Six. “I have a lot of respect for TFA, Bishop Moore and Olympia. They are very good teams and are well-coached. It’s no secret that the team that wins this district has an excellent chance to get to Jupiter (for the state tournament).”

Morse’s respect for DP’s district foes is well-founded. The Panthers, who lead the state in goals per game at 20.1, barely beat Bishop Moore, 13-11, on Feb. 24. Since then, Bishop Moore has gone 8-3, including a stunning 11-9 upset of defending state champ St. Johns Bartram Trail on March 24. Olympia, meanwhile, is one of six area schools that won district titles last season. The Titans surged all the way to the state semifinals before falling. District 12 isn’t the only tough district around as Central Florida boys’ and girls’ teams in 13 districts — seven in boys, six in girls — will vie for championships.

Windermere Prep Baseball Midseason by Kaden Bauer WINDERMERE PREP – The Windermere Prep Lakers (4-7) are on track to have the same record as they had last season which is not always the best thing. The Lakers finished last season with a 9-19 overall record and a 3-4 district record. Overall the Lakers (currently 4-7) might have a better record than last season but with a poor 1-5 district record already and currently being in last place in the standings are not adding up to a good season for Scott Horvath and his Lakers. The last week has been tough for the Lakers as they have lost both of their last two games. Their first defeat came at the hand of conference rivals Trinity Prep Saints (8-6) in a closely fought game that ended 9-7 in the Saints favor. Their second came from the solid looking Trinity Christian Academy Eagles (10-4) in which the Eagles blew out the Lakers 6-1. As bad as the score seems, it’s not nearly as bad as the Lakers 10-1 and 10-0 losses to the Trinity Catholic Celtics (9-3) and Trinity Prep Saints (8-6)

respectively. Horvath will be looking to turn the table and turn his side into a winning team but it may be too late this season to do such a thing. Horvath can start by focusing on the next few games and leading the Lakers to a couple of wins to raise their spirits and turn the season around. Their next game is a home game against an untested Denmark Vikings (0-0) side on March 30th. Horvath will be looking to come into this game swinging and hopefully crush the Vikings as easily as possible. After that they will play the Lake Highland Prep Highlanders (66) in what promises to be an exciting ball game that the Lakers will be looking to win. While it looks a little late for the Lakers to turn things around this season it’s always possible and no one can know for sure how the rest of the season will go. Horvath will most certainly be pulling all of his cards out in hopes of turning this season into a winning one.

Windermere Prep Softball off to a Poor Start by Kaden Bauer WINDERMERE PREP – The Windermere Prep Lakers Softball team has not had the greatest of starts this spring season. The Lady Lakers have started off with a 0-5 overall record and a 0-2 district record with no sign of improvement. Head coach Ken Janata will be looking to change this as soon as possible if the Lady

Lakers want to gain anything from this season. In their first five games of the season the Lady Lakers have been outscored 105-29. These numbers should be extremely worrying to Janata and the Windermere Prep Softball organization. Their last losses have been devastating defeats against the City of Life Christian Academy

Warriors (5-6) and the Wade Christian Academy Knights (4-1) with scores of 14-2 and 27-11 respectively. Conceding this many runs should be a huge red flag for Janata and his pitching team as well as the infield and outfield coverage. The Lady Lakers should look to improve on their coverage as well as their pitching in order to get these numbers down. The one upside of these games is that the Lady Lakers recorded a season high of eleven runs in their game against Wade Christian Academy. While seemingly impressive, it is outshined by the fact that they still conceded 27 runs and lost by a staggering difference of sixteen. Windermere Prep’s next game is an away game in a rematch versus the Wade Christian Academy team that blew them out earlier this season. This game takes place on March 30th at six p.m. which should give Janata and his Lady Lakers plenty of time to regroup and focus on the issues that they faced last time they met this strong team. These issues mainly include the pitching and field coverage as mentioned earlier. Janata will also be looking for his seniors to step up and start scoring more runs and leading the team by lending their experience to some of the younger players. While this season has been pretty disappointing for the Lady Lakers, the Windermere Prep Softball organization will be looking to scavenge all that they can from this season and hope to regroup and do better next season.
