Warriors Start Season Balanced!

by Greyson Everidge test, but the Warriors put up a fight throughout the entire game. At the half, the Warriors were beating the Panthers, only to be outscored in the second half of play. During the time period between the game against Dr. Phillips and Cypress Creek, Hurricane Irma swept through Central Florida, damaging the home field of West Orange High School. For the foreseeable future, all football games will be played away from home for the duration of the season.

WINTER GARDEN – The West Orange Warriors Football team, who ended the season last year in disappointed, have taken a better stance in the opening half of the 2017 year. Currently sitting with a (2-2) record, the Warriors can continue to work throughout the season to give themselves a good shot at making a run in the playoffs, which approach faster than anticipated every year. In the last three games, the Warriors have regis-

tered two wins and one loss. Prior to a break in play for two weeks due to Hurricane Irma, West Orange played Freedom High School on August 31st. Away from home, the Warriors managed to hold a shutout, winning by a score of 14-0 to get what was their first win of the season at the time. Their second loss came a week later at home against the highly ranked Dr. Phillips, by a score of 44-24. Although the Warriors lost in the end, it was widely expected to not be much of a con-

Against Cypress Creek, which was supposed to be the Warriors homecoming game but was played away from home, West Orange won by a blowout score of 45-0 on September 22. The wide receivers made up a majority of the scoring plays for West Orange, however defensively West Orange held solid to gain their second shutout of the season. The Warriors next game will be played away from home against the Wekiva Mustangs, on September 29 at 7 p.m. With the game, against a Wekiva team who are stronger than most years past, the Warriors will look to take their record to (3-2) to have a winning record at the halfway point in the season.

Dr. Philips Extends Its Winning Streak

DR. PHILLIPS – Dr. Philips, without a doubt, is one of the top teams in the Class 8A District 5 Football Standings. With a record of (3-0), the Panthers have been able to easily dominate their opponents. After almost being upset by University in the first week, the Panthers were set to

face West Orange and Mainland in the upcoming weeks. Two teams hoping they could beat a dominant team, like the Panthers, to get their seasons off to an impressive start. The Dr. Philips Panthers (1-0) faced a rebuilding

West Orange Warrior (1-1) team on September 7th. The Warriors, who had a horrible season last year, started the season with a dreaded loss to a district rival, Olympia. But easily came back in the next week to beat Freedom, 14-0, in a game which was called off at halftime due to inclement weather. The Panthers played this game away, where they had started slowly on offense. The Warriors surprised many, as they were able to hang on to a 17-16 lead at halftime. But that is all the Warriors had to offer, as the Panthers running game was impeccable in the second half. They almost seemed unstoppable, as they went on to score four touchdowns in the second half alone. Sealing this victory at 44-24, put the Panthers at a record of (20), and the Warriors at (1-2). Due to Hurricane Irma, football was out of action for two weeks. After this short break, the Panthers now faced the Mainland Buccaneers on September 22nd. The Buccaneers, who had beaten Dr. Phillips the past two years, entered the game with a record at (2-1) hoping to beat one of the state’s top teams for a third time. The Panthers, scored two touchdowns in the first half on short runs giving them a 14-0 lead at halftime. Devodney Alford played a massive role in this one, as he ran for a game-high 146 yards, and recording three straight hundred yard games. On the other side of the football, the Panthers defense looked outstanding, limiting the Bucs to 178 yards and forcing nine punts. This meant a 20-0 shutout victory for the Panthers, as the Bucs were unsuccessful in winning a third straight year. The Dr. Phillips Panthers play an Oak Ridge football team, who has been struggling, on September 29, at 7 P.M.

Foundation Academy Football with a Slow Start

WINTER GARDEN – The Foundation Academy Lions (1-2) have not hit the ground running as head coach Brad Lord probably would have wanted to. A couple of poor team performances combined with some tough competition as added up to a painfully slow start for the Lions. This is nothing new for the Lions as they started off last season off with a very similar (1-2) record. The first two games for the Foundation Academy Football program saw the Lions was twice and outscored 68-10. The loses came from the hands of the Cambridge Christian Lancers (3-1) and the First Academy Royals (4-0) with scores 42-3 and 26-7 respectively. The two major concerns that Coach Lord will have to look at are the lack of points that his team put on the

board and the overwhelming number of points that his team gave up. In the game against the First Academy Royals the Lions one touchdown came from sophomore quarterback Henry Austad who ended up rushing for more yards than he did passing. Austad only threw for 55 yards as well as two interceptions but ended up rushing for 73 yards including the Lions only touchdown of the night. Foundation Academy’s last game ended up much better for the Lions then the first two. The Lions beat the Northside Christian Mustangs (1-2) in a well fought 24-20 game. Dual threat quarterback Henry Austad improved his passing from the last game and threw for 124 yards and a touchdown but still threw one interception. He

Page 5

by Kaden Bauer

will need to focus on cutting his interceptions down if the team is to be successful. He also rushed for an impressive 87 yards along with senior Austin Mathis who ran for 94 yards as well as two touchdowns. The Lions next game is going to be their first district game against rival team Agape Christian Academy (0-2) in what promises to bring out the best of both teams. If the Lions can cut back on the unnecessary turn overs and limit the amount of points the Agape Christian Academy Saints can put on the board, they have a good chance at turning the season around and becoming a force to be reckoned with.

Olympia Football on Two Game Losing Streak

ORLANDO – The Olympia Titans (2-2) have been in a recent slump losing their past two games. After winning their first two games of the season against West Orange (2-2) and Ocoee (0-4) the Titans seemed like they were going to have an easy season but the last two games have reminded them that nothing comes easy in high school football. The first of these last two losses saw the Titans fall to the Edgewater Eagles (2-1) in a nail-biting 45-36 loss. Olympia was slow starting off but came alive in the second half of the game to make it an exciting game. Quarterback Joe Milton led the team with 148 pass yards and two touchdowns who connected with Shane Hooks

4 times for 48 yards and two of his own touchdowns. The truly exciting stat came from freshman Christian Leary who took a kickoff back 95 yards to close the score line to 38-30 in the Titans last quarter search for a comeback. The effort came to no avail as Olympia could not complete the comeback The Titans other and latest loss came against a strong Wekiva Mustangs (3-1) side who shut out the Titans 15-0. Olympia just could not seem to get anything together on offense and the Mustangs persistent defense did nothing to help. Quarterback Joe Milton was limited to only 85 passing yards all game and Konrie Brown was only allowed 22 yards in 18 carries. Defensively

by Kaden Bauer

the Titans held their own against the Mustangs by only allowing 15 points against a strong Wekiva offensive side. A shutout loss was probably not what Head Coach Kyle Hayes and his team were looking for in their home opener. The Olympia Titans will be looking to redeem themselves in front of their home crowd against a (1-3) Freedom Patriots side at Olympia on Friday, September 29th. Coach Hayes will be looking to use this game to get his team out of their recent slump and return to the form they had during the first two games of the season.

WINDERMERE – The Windermere Prep Lakers are off to an amazing start in the 2017 season, currently sitting with a record of (3-0) after three games. In addition to the three wins, two of those wins have come against district opponents, giving the Lakers a good indicator of a potential district championship this early on in

the new season. In years past, the Lakers have formed solid teams which have competed well in their district. However, in the past two years under Head Coach Jacob Doss, Windermere Prep have been on the up and up, gradually improving with each passing year. After a number of athletes com-

mitted to high profile colleges last season, with more committed athletes making up the roster this year, things are only bound to continue to get better for the Lakers. In the first game of their season, the Lakers faced Harvest Community at home to kick-off their regular season record with a win – easily dispatching their opponents by a score of 33-14. In their next two games, which were played away from home, the Lakers got two wins to start their three game win streak. In the first game, played against Central Florida Christian Academy, the Lakers won by a score of 58-6, dominating their opponents in east Orlando. The Lakers threw for 239 yards, with junior Kai Patterson making up 154 of those yards. The team also rushed for a total of 98 yards, putting the Lakers over 300 total yards for the night. The defense also pulled their weight, making 33 tackles through the four quarters. The third win to date was a shutout played against Lake Mary Prep, with the Lakers winning by a score of 41-0. With 114 yards coming from passing, the other 136 yards were made up fairly evenly by rushing. Once again, Kai Patterson was a standout for the Lakers on both accounts. The next game for the Lakers will be played against Legacy Christian, on Friday September 29 at 5 p.m.

Windermere High Continue Struggling WINDERMERE – The Windermere Wolverine’s first season in the world of high school football is as much as anyone would expect. An absence of a senior class and no home field to play on have led to a struggling Wolverine side that hasn’t seen much success thus far into the season. The past two games for the Wolverines are all you need to look out to get a good grasp on how well the first half of their season has gone. They have been outscored by their opponents 79-5, still having yet to score the first touchdown in their school’s history. The two losses came at the hands of the University Cougars (1-3) and the St. Cloud Bulldogs (2-2) with scores of 42-2

and 37-3 respectively. In their game against University (their third game of the season), the Wolverines put up their first points in their school’s opening year with a safety which is unconventional to say the least. Their first offensive points of the season game in their fourth and latest game against St. Cloud which saw junior Anthony Fiallo kick a 35 yard field goal to score the only 3 points of the game for Windermere. While the score lines for the past two is nothing short of extremely disappointing, it is not as bad as it seems and head coach Greg Miller is doing the best with what he has got. The lack of

Apopka Dominating this Season. APOPKA- The Blue Darters for Apopka High have proved that this season they will be a challenging team to beat. With a current record of (3-1), they set out to win their season opener (44-7) and their second game (14-6) starting off their win streak coming up against the Lakeland Dreadnaught (3-0) and the Boone Braves (3-1). While Apopka was feeling good going into this game (2-0) the Dreadnaughts were ready to stop them in their tracks. Head coach Trayvon was

coaching the now (3-0) football to compete for their second win in the season at home. With the Blue Darters already (2-0) head coach Rick Darlington was feeling pretty confident about this game but soon realized that this game would be stopping their win streak and make them (2-1). Both teams played well putting up a high amount of points but Apopka fell short (4235) vs. Lakeland. After the devastating tough loss against

seniors that comes with a new school branching off with a new school brings more than just a lack of players. It brings a lack of experience, size, and strength that is vital for any high school team. That one extra year in a player’s development is crucial and the Wolverines are lacking these types of players so these types of score lines were expected for these games and predicted for the rest of the season most likely. Coach Miller will be looking to use this season as an experience builder to get the Windermere Football Program ready for the future. The Wolverines next game will be against the Lake Nona Lions (1-1) on August 29th.

by Logan Beardslee Lakeland, the Blue Darts were ready to make to go out and improve their record against the (3-1) Braves. Boone was ready to continue showing their strength with an Impressive start to the season winning three games in a row prior to playing Apopka. With Boone’s coach Andy Johnson leading the (3-0) braves going into this game they were well set to beat Apopka but the drive that Apopka had to win was enough for them to push through and ruin the perfect start of the Braves. Apopka was able to redeem themselves and show their fans that they still had it when they beat Boone (21-10) at home. Although Boone played well, they were out coached in the second half. The Darters played strong and now are (3-1) going into the next game. With Apopka getting their momentum back they are looking to gain another win against Evans on September 29th, at 7:00pm at Evans and become (4-1) and rank high in the beginning of the season.

Bishop Moore Starts Great This Season

ORLANDO-The Bishop Moore hornets starts the season off looking promising with a record of (3-1). Winning the first two games against Edgewater and Lake Brantley, both games scoring over 30 points. The next two weeks Bishop Moore had to face challenging opponents. Their first game against the Titusville Terriers who were (2-1) at the time. And their fourth matchup of the season would be against The South Sumter Raiders who were (0-3) coming into the game. Going into this game the Hornets were (2-0) looking to extend their lead playing the Terriers who lost a game early in the season but going to put up a fight for this game. Through the first quarter of the game the defense on both sides were able to shut down the offense and no points were allowed for either team. With no points in

the first quarter both teams were ready to score Titusville was able to take the lead in the second with 14 points put up and the Hornets fell behind and only had 7 points. During halftime the Hornets were able to regroup for the 3rd quarter and tie the game up scoring one touchdown and shutting down the Terriers offense. With the last quarter coming up it was neck and neck both teams wanting to win but the hornets were unable to surpass the Terriers and lost the game (21-20) and their (2-0) streak was ended that night. Some key players to Titusville’s victory were their QB C. Squires with 9/18 complied passes for a total of 150 yards was able to through one touchdown, and put up 39 rushing yards which resulted in a touchdown. Squires gave Kearsten Foltyn 2 receptions for 35 yards and took one of

those carries in for a touchdown. Those points wouldn’t have been enough to secure the led but with their kicker Griggs Alex putting up the highest total points of 9 helped take the team to victory. After that challenging game that did not go as planned for the Hornets last week they set on to beat South Sumter in week 4 (42-20). Bishop Moore looked more collected this game putting up 21 points in both half’s and never gave the lead up. While the Raiders looked very uncoached and unprepared coming into the game and had their losing streak extended to (0-4). Next week Bishop Moore is looking to face Jones (3-1) Friday, Sep 29 at 7:30pm.

Lake Highland Prep Winning makes them Tough to Beat

LAKE MARY – The Lake Mary Prep Griffins struggled last year, but things are looking up and hopeful this season for the Griffins. Under the influence of Head Coach Zachary Carter and a handful of senior and junior players, Lake Mary Prep are to certain to improve their record from the 2017 season, which ended in nine losses out of ten regular season games come the end of the year. In 2017, the Griffins will be led by a group of six key seniors whom Coach Carter takes great pride in coaching. The first Class of 2018 player in the group his quarterback Walker Dycus, in the past two seasons, Dycus has thrown for

30 touchdowns and 3,900 yards. Carter notes Dycus as one the “cornerstones of the program” and looks forward to an attack headed by Dycus. Judah Winfrey will join Dycus in the attack as a wide receiver, helping capitialize on chances created by the quarterback. Andy Allison is another senior wide receiver who will contribute, although Allison also plays as an outside linebacker. Evan Dvorchik plays with the special teams as a long snapper, as well as acting as an offensive lineman. Jacob Ungaro is a defensive end and offensive lineman who will be a part of the key defensive game for Lake Mary. The last senior in the defensive line

by Mark Korotetskiy

is offensive lineman Seth Cloutier. LJ Matos is a junior, and all-around athlete whom Carter thinks will play a great role in winning game for the Griffins. Matos is in company with his junior counterpart Andy Browning, who plays offensive lineman. Lake Mary have a visibly strong upperclassmen defensive line. In total, 14 players are returning for the 2017 year. Carter notes that about 6-8 kids tried out for the first time in the spring although they already students at Lake Mary. In addition to those new players, 4-5 new students to the school have shown interest in the football team potentially adding to their numbers. “We are looking to continue to build Lake Mary Prep’s football program the right way. This will be Lake Mary Prep’s 4th year having a football program back on campus.” said Carter. “This is by far the deepest team we have had in quite some time. I am especially looking forward to seeing these seniors compete their hearts out for the next 10 weeks. It is an exciting year for Lake Mary Prep football.” This preseason has gone well for the Griffins, too. With the largest numbers on the football team since Carter has taken over, there are plenty of talented players to develop and work with. “The depth across the board has afforded us the opportunity to increase the physicality and tempo to practice.” said Carter. “Hopefully this will pay us dividends once the regular season comes around.”
