CASEYS SMOKE LACROSSE COMPETITION By Michael Ward

4/26/16 - 5/9/16 • Jersey Sporting News Red Bank Catholic has proven to be a force to be reckoned with in the Shore’s B-North Division. Undefeated in-division with six wins and (6-3) overall, the team has risen to the occasion for the 2016 season. The Caseys opened up their season with two out-of-division games against Mendham and Moorestown. Perhaps the change of competition didn’t agree with Red Bank. They were unlike themselves as they fell for the first two games of the season, losing 10-9 against Mendham and experienced a resounding 14-3 defeat against Moorestown. As the competition got closer to home, Red Bank’s performance improved. They opened up on Colts Neck defeating them 15-1. Next was Ocean Township and Long Branch, who Red Bank defeated handily with 10-4 and 19-9 victories respectively. The RBC Rampage then made its way to Saint John Vianney, where the Caseys defeated the Lancers by a margin of 13-5. The prospects weren’t much better for Neptune or Red Bank Regional, as the Caseys were able to easily beat both by scores of 15-3 and 12-4.

RBC’S #34 ERIN MATTONE

The only other loss this season was their most recent game against Rumson-Fair Haven, where RBC fell 11-3. Oliva Farrington leads the way for the Caseys with 24 goals, followed by Cameron Lynch with 22 and Amanda Murphy with 15. Cameron Lynch also leads the team with assists with 13 for the season, followed by Kristen Pezzullo with 12 and Amanda Murphy bringing up the top 3 with 10.

Red Bank Catholic currently sits atop the Shore-B North Division at 6-0, with Ocean Township currently taking second with a 7-2 record, with Red Bank Regional in third, Saint John Vianney in fourth, Colts Neck in fifth, Long Branch sixth and Neptune and Monmouth bringing up the rear.

CBA, Ocean and St. Rose Shine in County Golf By Ted Kaiser

MONMOUTH COUNTY— CBA won the Monmouth County Tournament in boys’ golf last week. It was a big victory for the Colts who have now won three consecutive titles. CBA junior Chris Gotterup defended his title and set a tournament record with a six-under 66 performance. The Colts are ranked #2 in the state and appear primed for another run in the state tournament. Ocean Township also looked like strong contenders in the MCT. They placed second in the tournament and stand at 8-2 in match play on the season. Senior John Lee shot a 77 and finished in the top 10 in both the MCT and the Wall Tournament. He is averaging near a 39 on the year. Junior Simon Lee, John’s brother, averages right around 40 also and finished in the top 15 in both tournaments. That duo, along with senior Shalim Shah who averages a 41-42, has the Spartans consistently competing against any opponent. Chris Vivian really stepped up in the MCT and shot a 79.

“We are ecstatic coming in second place in counties,” says coach Ryan Kulat. “When we play our best golf we know we are really tough to beat. We know we have three guys that are going to shoot less than 120 so if we have other guys break 45 or even 42, we know we’re going to be in great shape.”

Simon Lee finished first with a 35 for Ocean, but the next four finishers were all Purple Roses. Brendan Kenny was second at 39, Christian Ruchalski was third at 40, Jared Scheininger was fourth at 41, and Noah Conforti was fifth at 42. That effort was enough to propel St. Rose to a mild upset of Ocean.

As strong as Ocean looked in the MCT, it was a little surprising to see St. Rose make a run and defeat the Spartans 162-164 in match play last week.

All the local golf teams will get set for the Shore Conference Tournament this Tuesday. It is being held at Charleston Springs Golf Course in Millstone.

LOSS TO MANASQUAN HAS SHORE REGIONAL’S BACK UP AGAINST THE WALL By Mike Ready

SEA GIRT – Defending NJSIAA South Group I champion Shore Regional saw their season record drop to 4-4 after absorbing another one-goal defeat, 9-8, against division rival Manasquan Thursday at the Sea Girt Army Camp. Including yesterday’s loss, three of Shore’s four loses this season have come by one goal counting 10-9 losses to both Westfield and Morristown – ranked 8th and 10th respectively in Group IV top 10 polls. Their fourth loss was 11-6 to Rumson-Fair Haven – ranked No.9 in the state. In that game, the Blue Devils had cut the deficit to 7-6 with 9:09 remaining before the Bulldogs pulled away in the final minutes.

tion a year ago and is playing with the same ferocity again this season leading the team in goals (28) and assists (13) for 41 points. Manasquan’s Logan Harms tied it 3:12 into the second half before Sarah George gave the lead back to Shore at 4:55 bouncing a shot past Manasquan goalie Megan Gianforte to make it 6-5. The Warriors tied it at 6-6 on an Emily Petillo goal at 8:02 before

Janie Cowley gave them a 7-6 lead at 10:46. Cowley then made a terrific play denying the goalie a chance to pass and forcing a drop before scooping up the ball right in front and converting for a two goal lead, 8-6, with 9:14 left in the game. Sarah George got the Blue Devils back to within one on a beautiful spin move in front that easily beat Gianforte to her left with 8:34 remaining in the game. However,

Manasquan came right back on a Logan Harms goal with 5:22 left to take a 9-7 lead with time running out. After scoring a goal that was disallowed for being in the crease, George got the Blue Devils back to within one, 9-8, with 1:51 left. But with time winding down, Shore’s last real scoring opportunity went for naught as Mary Kate George looked to be wide open right in front of the goal be-

“Hey, it happens, he (referee) saw what he saw and we got to deal with it,” Dudzinski said referring to the trip. “We told the girls ‘you got to move on, it’s a loss, we’re 4-4 and we have another game Saturday.’” As defending sectional champs the Blue Devils see the best that every team has to offer and it’s up to them to bring their A game against every opponent they face. “We have a target on our back and every team wants to beat us,” Dudzinski said. “They played well; they played better than we did. The girls are disappointed and frustrated but we told them ‘it’s part of life, things happen and you learn from them. Think back on the game, think of what you did and what you should’ve have done and don’t do it again.’”

“We turned the ball over to many times and ground balls killed us,” third-year Shore head coach Dave Dudzinski said. “We got out of rhythm and late in the game we tried to force to many things and that’s not the way we do it. And then we got frustrated and tried to do to much.” In Thursday’s game, Shore held a 5-4 lead at the half on two goals by Mary Kate George, and one each by Sarah George, Allie Reiser and Becca Witschel. Reiser and Sarah George posted assists as well. Sarah George – who will continue her playing career at Ohio State University next season – was a first team All-Shore selec-

fore being tripped into the crease with the call going against her for being in the crease.

The loss drops Shore –ranked No.2 in the Shore Conference - two games behind No.1 Rumson-Fair Haven and one back of No.5 Manasquan in the Shore Conference Class A Central.

“We got to win every game now,” Dudzinski said. “There is no room to lose now.”

The Barnegat Boys Lacrosse team has gotten off to a mixed start to begin their 2016 season. But despite losing their first three games, the Barnegat Bengals have rebounded and are poised to take control of their year.

Their schedule ahead has them facing Manasquan, Point Pleasant Boro, Lacey, Jackson Liberty and Wall to round out the month of April. In the early part of May they’ll face Donovan Catholic, Marlboro and Long Branch.

Despite being (2-4) overall, they have only played one game in-division. This stroke of luck makes them (1-0) in league play with only Manasquan and Wall having the advantage over them in the standings.

Leading the Bengals in goals is J.J. McKenna, who’s racked up nine so far in his senior year. Following up the list in top shooters is Ryan Reynolds with seven and Joe Jinks with six. Jinks also leads the assists column along with Tristan Potts with four each. Ryan Reynolds isn’t far behind with three.

Barnegat’s first win came on April 11th, when they faced off against Toms River East and won with a resounding 11-6 final score.

Kyle Kessinger has been doing an exceptional job protecting the net with 35 saves recorded so far this season.

Their next win came on the 16th when they faced a formidable St. Rose Lacrosse team. Coming in as the underdog, the Bengals snatched victory from the jaws of defeat with an 8-7 win.

Barnegat will need every win they can get to catch up to the two teams leading the division thus far. Wall and Manasquan have both racked up seven wins each overall this season, only losing one and two games respectively.

What is Supplemental Insurance? Supplemental insurance is extra or additional insurance that helps you pay for things your standard insurance doesn't cover. When you choose supplemental insurance plans from Combined Insurance, cash benefits are paid directly to you so you can use the money to help pay for out-ofpocket medical costs, lost wages or other unexpected expenses due to illness or injury. Advertisements for various types of insurance are everywhere ... and they can be confusing. So what exactly do you need to learn about supplemental insurance and what can it do for you? As its name implies, supplemental insurance pro-

vides you with another layer of protection, on top of existing policies you probably already have, such as health and life insurance. It can help you pay for the things existing policies may not cover. Supplemental insurance is similar to other lines of insurance - such as life or health insurance - but it is not meant to be your only means of protection. While major medical or life insurance policies can provide the bulk of benefits to your family after an illness or loss, supplemental insurance benefits can be used to pay for unexpected out-of-pocket expenses or help with things like utility bills, rent, and the like. AT MATER DEI PREP, ICE HOCKEY IS ON THE RISE

WOMEN’S TEAM ENTERS ELITE LEAGUE; MEN’S TEAM FORMED MIDDLETOWN—Despite the title, the ice hockey program at Mater Dei Prep is heating up. Next season the women’s ice hockey team will enter an elite league, while the school will host the inaugural season of its men’s program. The addition of men’s ice hockey increases the total number of varsity sports at Mater Dei Prep to 22. The Mater Dei Prep women’s hockey team enters its third season as newly-accepted members of the Women’s Interscholastic Hockey League of the MidAtlantic (WIHLMA). Currently, Mater Dei Prep is the only school in the Shore area that offers women the opportunity to compete in the sport of ice hockey. WIHLMA consists of schools from New Jersey, Pennsylvania, New York and Maryland. ”WIHLMA is a very competitive league which presents a great opportunity for our players,” said Mater Dei Prep athletic director Dennis Tobin. “Being able to compete in WIHLMA will facilitate many of our players’ achieving their dream of playing women’s ice hockey at the collegiate level.” Current player Samantha Gatti will be continuing her hockey career at Neumann University, while one former Mater Dei Prep player has re-

ceived a full scholarship to play at the University of Wisconsin. Coach Oktay Armagan has worked hard on improving his players’ skills while engineering the growth of the program. He said, “Our players appreciate the opportunity to represent their school. I am proud of how far our program has come in just two seasons.” In addition to the women’s program, beginning in the 2016-17 school year, Mater Dei Prep will offer men’s ice hockey. “This is an exciting time at our school” said Tobin. “It’s great that we have both the resources and interest level from male students to implement men’s ice hockey.” The team will compete against Shore Conference schools, in addition to other schools in New Jersey. As with the women’s team, the men’s team will practice and play their home games at the Middletown Sports Complex on Harmony Road in Middletown. Henry Hudson Looks Playoff Caliber By Ted Kaiser

HIGHLANDS— A four-game winning streak to start the season ignited the Henry Hudson softball team to a 7-3 overall record. The Admirals appear to be locks for a playoff spot despite a recent two-game skid. Last Tuesday saw Henry Hudson earn a critical 2-1 victory over St. Rose. Pitcher Kamryn Hubeny tossed seven one-run innings. The sophomore only gave up five hits on the afternoon. Junior Vincenza Villali had an RBI and a stolen base. Olivia Iannace and Devon Adams each scored runs as the Admirals built a 2-0 lead by the top of the 4th inning.

tions for the crown. The two teams meet again on May 3rd at Mater Dei Prep. First, Henry Hudson has upcoming games against Ranney, Lakewood, Keyport, and Marlboro on the schedule.

It was the second game of a back-to-back set for Henry Hudson after facing Keyport the day before. They routed the Red Raiders 11-1 behind 15 hits and a five-run first inning that took away any doubt for the game’s outcome early on. Ali Quast had 4 RBIs, while Iannace, Emma Curry, and Sophia Shea each batted in a pair. Hubeny held Keyport in check and recorded five strikeouts in the five inning mercy rule game. The Admirals dropped a pair of games to Keansburg and Manalapan at the end of last week. The loss to the Braves was non-divisional so they remain in the mix for first place in the division. They will have to avenge an earlier defeat to Mater Dei Prep if they have aspira-

Brick Memorial Comes Out Swinging Titans Gear Up for Strong Season By Michael Ward By Michael Ward

Keansburg’s Titans aren’t usually the first team high school sports fans tend to think of when they run through a list of dominant baseball teams in the region. In the Shore Class-B Central Division, other names such as St. Rose and Point Pleasant Beach tend to suck most of the air out of the room. But this year, Keansburg has put forward an excellent group of players that will give any team in the division a run for their money.

BRICK MEMORIAL Photos by: Tom Smith

Brick Memorial has been making their position on top of the Shore Class-A South Division look easy throughout the first half of the 2016 baseball season. Even with tough competition like Toms River South and Jackson Memorial nipping at their heels, the Mustangs have been able to outride and persevere over many of their opponents this spring. Sitting atop the standings with an overall record of (9-2), Brick Memorial has taken part in their fair share of decisive wins, close battles and only a handful of opportunities lost this season. The Mustangs opened up their season with two invitational games against Big Walnut and Walnut Hills of Ohio. Brick Memorial sent both teams packing with 12-1 and 12-2 victories in each outing. It was then onto Lacey where the Mustangs galloped all over their competition with a 7-3 win.

In their next outing twos days later, Brick Memorial was back to their winning ways although not with their traditional offensive onslaught, defeating Toms River East by a score of 2-1.

Currently sitting in the standings at four wins and three losses, the Keansburg Titans sit in the middle of the pack in their division. They’ve been able to outmuscle Keyport (3-4), Ranney (2-6), Henry Hudson (1-6) and Asbury Park (0-7). The teams who are ahead of them in the standings have had to look twice as well. On

KEANSBURG’S #3 ALESSI April 19th Keansburg faced off against second place Point Pleasant Beach and defeated them decisively by a score of 6-3. The Titans of the Bayshore have also opened up on many other

The Mustangs continued their trot throughout Toms River with a faceoff against Toms River South where they won in another close contest with a final score of 7-6. Their next game, played on April 15th was a tough game against a tough opponent, Jackson Memorial. The Jackson offense proved to be taxing on Brick as they fell against their Ocean County rival by a final score of 10-3.

opponents, including a 19-4 trouncing of Henry Hudson to start the season, a big win over Asbury Park with the unbelievable score of 20-10 and defeating Ranney 15-3. Leading the team through a very good season have been seniors Austin Blum, Gannon Meyer and Ian Terry. The vast majority of the team are Juniors and underclassmen, making this team one to watch going forward should Keansburg improve on their success this season even further. Coming up in Keansburg’s schedule are rematches with Mater Dei, Ranney and Asbury Park, then the team moves on to Holmdel to take of the Hornets in May.

Two low-scoring pitchers duels defined MidApril for the Mustangs, as they faced off against Red Bank Regional and Southern Regional, winning both games with scores of 1-0 and 2-0 respectively.

With their successes mounting and seemingly having figured out how to defeat many of the tough teams in the division, Keansburg in poised to put together a winning season and build of the lessons they learned from last year’s (6-13) season.

Focus on your family and we’ll focus on your future. This brought them to another game against a Toms River team, this time Toms River North. But the Mustangs were able to keep their clean sweep of Toms River opponents intact, winning by a score of 13-12.

BRICK MEMORIAL’S #17 Next, was a faceoff against their cross-town rivals at Brick Township for their closest game yet. Brick Memorial just narrowly slid by their Township counterparts with a 4-3 win. But the effort may have taken the wind out of their sails at a time when they least needed it. Up next on the schedule was Christian Brothers Academy, a regional powerhouse which Brick would need all of their energy and focus to defeat. After a high-score outing, Brick Memorial finally fell to CBA by a score of 10-6. But these mustangs weren’t going to let a tough loss keep them down.

Brick will finish out April with matchups against Lacey and Toms River East. Toms River South will host Brick Memorial’s first game in May.

MIDDLETOWN SOUTH ROUTS FREEHOLD FOR ERBIG’S RECORD-BREAKING 722nd WIN By Mike Ready

FREEHOLD TOWNSHIP – After tying retired Hunterdon Central coach Pete Fick’s state record (721-296-1) for career wins in Monday’s 10-3 win over Howell, Middletown South wasted no time making their long-time head coach the winningest softball coach in state history with a 17-7 six-inning victory for coach Tom Erbig’s 722nd career win. Erbig, whose current team is ranked sixth in the state and third in the Shore Conference, record stands at 722-228-1 including 8-2 so far this season. Middletown South is presently the defending NJSIAA Group III champions after beating Sparta 8-1 in the final A year ago for Erbig’s fifth state title to go along with 15 sectional crowns in his 36 years at Middletown South. “I don’t think you’ll find many coaches who have been coaching 36 years at one school,” Erbig said. “I can’t imagine what spring would be like without coaching. That’s what I do in the spring, I coach softball.

“It’s cool to have the longevity to be able to have the ability to do this. I’ve just had wonderful young ladies my whole career and they’ve played the way I expected them to play. It’s a great accomplishment and I understand that, but I really deflect that to my players because without the players you don’t do anything.” One of those such players is senior pitcher Maddie McMahon who made sure Erbig didn’t have wait any longer than necessary to break the record. The Siena-bound McMahon had a career day going 4-for-4 with two doubles, two home runs and a school-record nine RBI while posting her seventh win of the season on the mound. “It was awesome to be able to do that for coach,” McMahon said. “Overall we all showed up and were ready to play. He kept telling us to just play like any other game and we did. It’s crazy, I never thought I’d do anything like that hitting; it’s a big accomplishment on a very special day.” “Oh my God, she’s just been super over the last couple of games,” Erbig said of his star pitcher. “That’s who she is. She just made life easy for us. Maddie takes it upon herself to get the job done and takes the ball every day; all my seniors are doing just a great job.” Even after all these years of coaching Erbig hasn’t lost an ounce of enthusiasm for the game and his enthusiasm is a reflection of how his girls approach each-and-every game. “I get excited every day; I wouldn’t be here if I didn’t,” Erbig said. “If I didn’t love it I wouldn’t be here and that’s what I preach to the girls. It’s got to be a passion and you got to want to be here. There are many very good softball players at this school who aren’t here because they don’t want to put in the time that we put in and do what we demand of them.” Now that that the record is broken, Erbig and his team can fully focus on winning another state title – one game at a time.

TOP DOCS 2012 - 2013 - 2014

MIDDLETOWN SOUTH’S #10 CIARA SULLIVAN The Eagles added another win to Erbig’s total with a 3-2 win over Manalapan on Thursday. Erbig rested McMahon starting freshman Sophia Wilson, who scattered 12 hits allowing one earned run while striking out five and walking four before turning the ball over to McMahon in the seventh with two outs.

“It’s a relief, not for me but the girls, I don’t want them feeling pressure,” Erbig added. “I don’t want them to play for anyone but themselves and go out and get the job done. Now we can focus on getting through the season one game at a time as rhetoric as it is; let’s get one at a time.”

McMahon got out of the innings and picked up the win when the Eagles broke a 2-2 tie with a run in bottom of the seventh. Ciara Sullivan – who broke the school record for home runs in a game (4) earlier this season hit a walkoff double to score Julian Bigos for the winning run. Julia Blarr had an RBI double and sacrifice fly.

“It’s just really cool to be here for it,” McMahon said. “It’s such a big milestone and accomplishment for anyone to get. It’s really cool to be on a team when that happened. I think it’s awesome, it was an awesome experience to be here for it and you couldn’t ask for a better coach; I’ll remember this day forever.”

All eyes will be focused on the Eagles (8-2, 7-1) April 28 rematch with division rival Middletown North – ranked fourth in the state and second in the Shore Conference. The Lions (12-1, 8-0) beat the Eagles 2-1 earlier this month and hold a one-game lead in Class A North over the Eagles.

HOLMDEL – Senior Mike Frissora made his first start of the season and second of his career a memorable one as the lanky right-hander tossed a complete-game six-hitter allowing two runs (one earned), six hits, two walks and one hit batter while striking out four as Rumson-Fair Haven rolled to their fourth win in a row beating division foe Holmdel 7-2 Friday at the Hornets home field. At the plate Frissora helped his own cause going 3-for-4 with three RBI and a run scored including a two-out, two-RBI single in the top of the fourth which ended up being the game-winning hit and pushing the Bulldogs lead to 3-0 giving him a nice cushion to pitch with.

in the pen this year but we didn’t need him. We needed him on Friday and we asked him if he wanted the start and he was ready. We had hoped to get a good three or four innings out of him and every inning after the fourth we asked him if he wanted another one and by the seventh inning he was still in the low 70’s in his pitch count. He really wanted to finish, so when a pitcher says he wants to finish and he’s at a reasonable pitch count, we let him finish. He was tremendous.”

The Bulldogs were playing their fourth game in five days and with an exhausted pitching staff that had just reeled off three-quality starts, Frissora was called on for a spot start with the hope that he could go three to four innings max then turn the game over to the pen.

“I wanted the ball and wanted to go the full way and finish it out,” Frissora said. “Our pitching has been phenomenal this week. We’ve had all our pitchers throw complete games. They’ve been amazing, giving up little runs, not walking people, throwing strikes and our defense has been making all the plays. And our offense has really turned on. For our first few games we had trouble at the plate, popping up, striking out and not letting the other team make plays but I feel like we’ve turned it around.”

“He was tremendous,” Bulldogs head coach Kevin James said. “He’s been looking for a start and he’s warmed up a couple of times

The Bulldogs got off to a rough 1-5 start before evening their record at 5-5 after Friday’s win which pushed their division record to 4-2 tying

run scored and Fahey 1-for-2 with an RBI, run scored and two walks.

“Even though we started out 1-5 our attitude was still positive, “Frissora said. “It was kind of frustrating for us seniors because it’s our last year and we wanted to get our stuff together and come out and compete, give ourselves a good season and chance in the playoffs. We definitely have all the momentum going for us now so hopefully we’ll keep clicking on all cylinders like we are now.”

“Huge win,” James said. “We’re back to 5-5. We struggled early on losing some tough games, but over the last four the senior leadership is really rising up and doing a great job for us. Four seniors got four starts for us this week and threw 27 innings of 28; you can’t beat that. Baseball’s a simple sport, you’re only as good as the person you put on the bump that day. If you’re getting quality starting pitching everything falls into place.

Holding a 3-1 lead entering the top of the sixth, the Bulldogs tacked on three insurance runs to take a 6-1 lead. Frissora drove in Sam Chandler who had singled and moved to second on a walk to leadoff hitter Dan Trocchia before Teddy Sourlis brought Trocchia home on a sacrifice fly to deep centerfield. Cleanup hitter Matt Fahey then drilled an RBI single to center forcing Holmdel starting pitcher Jordyn Brosemer out of the game.

The Bulldogs added a run in the seventh on a walk to senior Max Pfrang, a Chase Pfrang line drive single into left field and a sinking line drive RBI single into center by senior Mickey Schluter. Schluter finished 3-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored while Chandler went 2-for-4 with a

“Let me tell you, we have 12 seniors and even when we were 1-5 their attitude was disappointment but not frustration. They weren’t giving up, they weren’t quitting; this a great bunch of seniors. They come to practice every day wanting to get better and willing to work; it’s a blue collar mentality for these guys. It’s a group you can’t help but root for; they’re great kids. They’re great students, great role models in the classrooms and hallways and they never changed how they treated their classmates when they were 1-5. These kids come late to practice because they’re helping other kids academically after school. I’m thrilled and proud to coach them and fired up with the way we’re playing.”

UP AND DOWN SEASON HAS RED BANK BOYS LACROSSE LOOKING FOR ANSWERS By Mike Ready

RED BANK – With last year’s Number two scorer in the Shore Conference returning (Cole Smolokoff) and two other seniors in the top 15 in scoring (Brian Fagan and Ruan Gilmartin)back for this years campaign, along with the top goalkeeper in saves and ninth in save percentage (Jon Pierce), a lot was expected from this seasons Buccaneer boys lacrosse team.

POINT BEACH RIGHTS THE SHIP WITH 11-3 WIN OVER DONOVAN CATHOLIC By Mike Ready

However, it’s been a bit of a roller-coaster ride for Red Bank Regional so far this season as they seek some consistency and try to rebound from a disappointing 4-6 start. After starting stumbling out of the gate this season with three straight losses including back-to-back losses to No.7 Wall and No.2 Manasquan, the Bucs then reeled off three straight wins and appeared to be on their way. Then came a 10-6 loss to division foe and 10th ranked Saint John Vianney before beating Red Bank Catholic – ranked No.6 in the Shore Conference at the time – for a huge statement win. Yet, following the RBC win, the Bucs lost to undefeated and fifth-ranked Ocean Township 12-9 before absorbing a dispiriting 8-7 overtime loss to a very beatable Jackson Memorial team on Thursday. Jackson came into the game with a 2-7 record and a 0-4 mark in Class A South competition but

RBR’S #23 BRIAN FAGAN the Bucs again failed to right the ship losing to a team they should’ve beaten. Gilmartin had four goals and four assists in the loss giving him 24 goals and seven assists for 31 points this season. Smolokoff – a third team AllShore selection a year ago - added two goals to raise his team leading goals-scored total to 29. Fagan – selected to the Shore Conference Coaches Association first team Class B North last season – is second on the team in points scored with 32 points including 21 goals and 11 assists. The Bucs finished 10-12 last season after being eliminated in the first round of the NJSIAA South, Group II state playoffs as the No.12 seed losing to No.5 seed Ocean Township 16-12. With games still remaining against No.10 Freehold Township, No.1 Rumson-Fair Haven and Shore Regional - who’s on the verge of breaking into the top 10 - in addition to the Shore Conference Tournament and state playoffs, there’s plenty of time for first-year head coach Kevin Main’s team to turn things around and get on a roll at just the right time.

However, for this to happen there has to be more of a contribution coming from players in the lineup other than the big three, who are as good as any three in the Shore Conference.

POINT BEACH’S #20 JOSH YATES POINT PLEASANT BEACH – The Garnet Gulls snapped a two-game losing streak with an impressive 11-3 non-conference win over Donovan Catholic Wednesday in Point Pleasant Beach.

Sophomore Jude Lovgren came in to finish the job going three innings allowing three runs - one earned – on four hits while walking two and striking out two for the first save of his career.

After starting out the season on a six-game winning streak, loses to St. Rose and Keansburg left the gulls in a bit of a tail spin which made Wednesday’s win all that more important as the Gulls got back on track. The win left the Gulls (7-2, 5-2) two games back of St. Rose (7-1, 7-0) in the Shore Conference Class B Central.

“My hats off to Jude Lovgren,” Fiore said. “Jude did an outstanding job and realistically this was his first actual quality outing where he faced some tough players against a tough team and he dealt real well. He pitched to contact and got the outs.”

“It becomes a mindset,” Pt. Beach head coach Angelo Fiore said. “We came off of six-straight wins and after the loss to St. Rose it hit the kids hard emotionally and it was kind of hard to recover against Keansburg when we had just one bad inning and dug ourselves into a hole. But this was outstanding today to come back against a super tough team from Ocean County; it was a huge win for us.” Junior southpaw Kevin Donnelly threw four shutout innings to earn the win, working his way out of two-out jams in second, third and fourth innings when he had men in scoring position on second and third in each those innings before getting out of the inning with two strikeouts and a 4-3 groundout. In the first, second baseman Josh Yates made a sparkling play on a shot up the middle with a runner at third to save a run for Donnelly, who gave up three hits, walked three while fanning three. “He (Donnelly) threw one heck of a game against Lakewood on Saturday and Lakewood’s a super tough team this year,” Fiore said. “We would’ve liked to have had a little more rest on him but he came back for us today and gave us the innings we needed; he was outstanding.”

The top four batters in the Point Beach order combined to go 9-for-14 with seven RBI as the Garnet Gulls banged out 12 hits including three extra-base hits. Senior leftfielder Joe Delgrippo led the hit parade for the Gulls by going 3-for-4 with a double, three RBI and three runs scored. “Joe Delgrippo was outstanding at the plate today,” Fiore said. “Every time he came up to the plate he had great opportunities and he delivered on every single one. “One of the things we always focus on or try to focus on is quality at bats. Last couple of games we didn’t really get it done but today we able to execute and do all the stuff we needed to do.” Donnelly and senior right fielder Ryan Franzoni each went 2-for-3, with Donnelly driving in two and scoring two and Franzoni doubling and driving in a run while Yates added an RBI and a run scored. Number nine hitter, sophomore shortstop Kenny MacPherson, went 1-for-2 with a tworun double, a run scored and a walk. “I like this team, I like the chemistry of this team,” Fiore said. “I like the kids, they play well together and they’re blending well together. So it’s just one game at a time and I think we’ll be okay.”

CBA Lacrosse Aiming for Tournament Championship

CHRISTIAN BROTHERS ACADEMY TO HONOR CROSS COUNTRY COACH TOM HEATH

By Lindsey Ward

Going into the 2016 Lacrosse season, Coach Dave Santos has a majority of his team returning from last season. Of those returning players are the team’s top producers from the 2015 season. The leading scorers returning are Captain John Salcedo (Senior), Shay Walczak (Junior), Nick Casner (Junior), and Michael Carroll (sophomore). The most exciting game that has occurred so far this season according to Coach Santos would be against Rumson-Fair Haven on April 12th, 2016. CBA lost 10-3. The reasoning Coach Santos states, “Rumson-Fair Haven has been our number one rival for many years now. We hope to get another shot at them in the Shore Conference Tournament.” During the game against Rumson, Attacker Nick Casner scored two goals and Midfielder Finn Straine had a goal. On April 20th, CBA played their eighth game of the season against their divisional rival the Colts Neck Cougars. The final score of the game was 11-6, this was CBA’s fourth win in a row, but the win didn’t come easy. Early on in the game, the Colts were down 2-0. It wasn’t long until the Colts came out in full force scoring six unanswered goals to open up a bit of a lead. The Cougars hadn’t given up yet and came back into the game during the third period with a push, making the score 7-5. CBA had finished the game strong with four goals in the 4th period. The leading scorer of the game was Michael Carroll who scored

CBA’S #3 CHRISTOPHER HAYES four goals. Both John Salcedo and Cologialo Muscare added two goals to the board. Shay Walczak finished the game with two assists and a goal. Teammates Nick Casner and Luke Valentino also added goals to the board helping the Colts to their victory. Looking ahead to the rest of the season, Coach Santos and his team have one goal they are trying to achieve. Coach Santos elaborates on their goal, which is, “Winning the Shore Conference Tournament, which is something we have done 4 times, but not since 2009.” The Colts have the heart and dedication for what it takes to win the Shore Conference Championship this year. Currently the Colts lacrosse team has four players committed to further their playing careers in college. Those players are Nick Casner, Siena College, and Shay Walczak, Kenyon College. Both John Salcedo, and Michael Carroll will be attending Bucknell University in the fall.

CBA COACH TOM HEALTH Photo by: Larry Levanti/CBA Athletics Christian Brothers Academy will honor Coach Tom Heath on Monday, April 25th before the Colts' home Outdoor Track & Field meet. Heath announced his retirement from cross country coaching in December, ending a 45-year tenure as the head running coach at CBA. After serving as an assistant in 1970, Heath took over the program in 1971 and never looked back. He complied 26 NJSIAA group state championships, 21 NJSIAA Meet of Champions titles, 15 Eastern States regional victories, and of course, a Nike National Championship in 2011. What Heath may be remembered the most for, however, is "the streak." CBA has won 343 dual meets in a row, a national record, which Heath will pass along to new head coach Sean McCafferty. The streak began in September 1974, when CBA beat Marist and will the Colts will look to continue it come fall 2016. Heath also spent most of those 45 years as the distance track coach, winning three distance medley relays at the prestigious Penn Relays. The day's festivities will begin at 3:30 p.m. with a ceremony honoring Coach Heath's tremendous impact on CBA Athletics. The Colts host Middletown South and Freehold Township in a tri-meet, beginning at 4:00 p.m. CBA's track is accessible by continuing past the gym parking lots on the main driveway.

Patriots Softball Goes On The Attack By Michael Ward

Freehold Township’s Lady Patriots have faced plenty of tough competition so far this season, but they have kept their fighting spirit as they go into the second half. Coming in at (4-6) overall, the softball team from Freehold Township looks to build on what they’ve accomplished so far this season and excel late as they face tough competitors from all around the Shore-A North Division. There was nowhere to go but up after their season opener against Middletown South. The game saw tough pitching from Middletown and a power offense to back it up. Freehold Township ended up falling 9-0. Having the experience to play against one of the best teams in the division and region allowed the Patriots to adjust for a season filled with tough games.

Monmouth Regional Softball Won’t Stay Down By Lindsey Ward The Monmouth Falcons softball season began on April 5, 2015 for Coach Audra Corson and her team. Going into the 2016 season, the team had lost six seniors from the prior season. Coach Corson and her team have goals set that they wish to achieve this year. Coach states, “Even though we have a young team our goal is always to qualify for the Shore Conference Tournament and for the State Tournament.” Although Monmouth is a young team, that’s not going to stop them from trying to reach their goals. In fact, it’s going to make them work even harder. There were two games that stuck out most so far this season to Coach Corson. Those would be, the games played against Saint John Vianney and Manasquan.

rest of their season.” Monmouth played Raritan away on April 22, and lost 4-3 in a nail biter in the bottom of the 9th inning. During the game, Jessica Pszeniczny, had two hits, and an RBI. Marissa Warwick, had two RBI’s, and Danielle Britton, completed the game strong with three hits, and a run scored. Looking ahead at the rest of the season, the ladies of the Monmouth Regional softball team are taking it game by game. There is no particular team that sticks out most that they are looking forward to playing against. They treat every team as an equal competitor.

When the Falcons played regional powerhouse St. John Vianney, they lost 19-1. Coach Corson expressed, “That was the worse game they have played so far this season.” After such a devastating loss, the ladies had two days of practice to regroup. Then the team went on the road to play Manasquan, which is the game that stuck out the most to Coach Corson. Monmouth won 4-0. During that game, junior pitcher, Jessica Pszeniczny, pitched a six-hitter with no walks, and three strikeouts. Fellow junior, Kimberly Fawcett, had an RBI single, and so did sophomore, Danielle Britton, which helped lead Monmouth to its victory. Danielle Kroll, also had a big game with two doubles.

It didn’t take long for Freehold to put these lessons to good use as they faced off against Jackson Memorial three days later. The outcome was drastically different as Freehold pulled out their first win of the season, defeating Jackson Memorial by a score of 7-3. Freehold followed that win up with a close battle with Manalapan, which extended their winning streak to two games as Manalapan fell to the Patriots in a close 6-5 game.

Freehold Township has also defeated Lacey of Ocean County in an impressive 7-2 game and trounced their rivals in Freehold Borough by a score of 9-4.

Coach Corson expresses, “after losing so badly to SJV, the team was able to take the high road, and not allow such a devastating loss to affect the

MONMOUTH REGIONAL SLIDES INTO HOME FOR THE RUN

This opens up the rest of the season for Freehold Township, where they’ll grant Manalapan a rematch and then try again against a tough Howell team, who they were already defeated by once before this season. Nicole Baptista currently leads the team in hits with 17. Kiersten Withstandley and Heather Lally follow up the hit parade with 11 and 10 hits each. Freehold Township currently stands at fifth place on the season, well within reach of fourth place Howell. It will be tough to catch up with first place Middletown North, who currently stands at 13-1 overall.
