RUMSON-FAIR HAVEN SEEKS TO MAKE 3RD TIME THE CHARM By Michael Ward

This year marks the third occasion that Rumson-Fair Haven will have made it to the Central, Group 2 Sectional Finals. It’s also the third time that the Bulldogs have faced off against Holmdel, with the last two run-ins being unsuccessful bids for a Championship at the hands of the Hornets.

the top two teams receive as a reward for their top seed status. This meant that Rumson had to claw through a formidable Ewing Tennis Team, which they put down in a five match shutout, then move on to Robbinsville who they defeated 4-1.

Rumson hopes this time will be different. With the road they’ve gone down this spring, it wouldn’t be hard to imagine that all of their hard work will pay off.

The real test came when they faced 2nd seeded Ocean Township in a very close match-up that left the Bulldogs narrowly standing as they won 3 matches to 2.

By being seeded third at the start of the tournament, Rumson didn’t enjoy a bye week and were forced to play three rounds of matches as opposed to the two

Against Ocean, Tyler Lubin set the standard for a strong Rumson outing by defeating Alex Eisenberg by a 6-4 and 6-2 margin.

Noah Rubin of Rumson started on a little shakier footing, starting out by losing his first match, but battling back in the last two to claim total victory against Ocean’s Ross Leichtung. Dane Cuskley then came in to clean up the Singles slate with two 6-2 wins. Rumson faced two strong doubles slates in the latter half of play, but them both down easily in two matches each. The matchup against a strong Ocean team sets the stage for an explosive match-up against the reigning champions of Holmdel Township. If Holmdel doesn’t bring it’s strongest game to the tournament final on May 23rd, we may have a new champion come May 24th.

WALL STANDS UP TO LACEY LACROSSE By Ted Kaiser

WALL TOWNSHIP— The Wall Township girls’ lacrosse team (16-2) opened the state tournament with a resounding victory over Lacey. It was the first round of the NJSIAA South Group III bracket and the 6th seeded Crimson Knights downed the 11th seeded Lions by a score of 17-6. The balanced effort offensively gave the Class A North champions an early lead and they never looked back. Seniors Nora Burdge and Julie Gillet scored four goals apiece to lead the way. Sophomore Alexa Sirchio had a hat trick and leading scorer junior Kate Kinsella and Becky Kurfehs each scored a pair of goals for the Knights. The defense was so impenetrable that junior goaltender Brenna Arey only had to make four saves. Coach Bill Chiesi believes that Thursday was one of his squad’s best-played games of the season, especially for his seniors. Combine that effort with the contributions of the offensive-minded Kate Kinsella and the stingy defense and Wall had an excellent recipe for victory. Lacey got two goals from junior Aubrey Herb in the game effort against Wall. Senior Carlie Chimenti scored her 103rd career goal in the final game of her career. The Lions had an outstanding season with a young, inexperienced roster. They finished 12-5 and will look to build on that record heading into 2017.

Next up for the Crimson Knights is a date with 3rd seeded Notre Dame in the second round of the South Group III tournament. Last year they reached the South Jersey Group II semifinals during their 19-win season.

MANASQUAN DOMINATES SOMERVILLE FOR TRIP TO SECTIONAL SEMIFINALS By Mike Ready SEA GIRT – The Manasquan boys’ lacrosse team methodically took apart a very good Somerville team outplaying them in every phase of the game en route to a 15-7 win over the ninth-seeded Pioneers in a NJSIAA South Group II quarterfinal match. The top-seeded Warriors (16-4) now head into the semifinals for the first time in program history and will face fifth-seeded Hopewell Valley who destroyed No.4 seed Ocean Township 16-6 to advance into next week’s quarterfinal game against Manasquan. “Today we set the programs win record and got the furthest in the states, it’s a nice one-two on a day,”

The two teams traded goals to start the second quarter with Canyon Birch giving the Warriors a 4-1 lead at 11:42 before the Pioneers Ryan Pedrani got one back less than a minute later. It remained that way until the 3:27 mark of the second quarter when Feldstedt scored unassisted for a 5-2 lead. The Warriors then pushed the lead to four goals on Devon Carroll’s 23rd goal of the season with less than a minute to play in the half. The Warriors let their guard down after the goal allowing Somerville to score just 30 seconds later to pull to within 6-3 at the half. Manasquan’s Matt Thermann won the faceoff battle 7-4 in the first half then in the second half he was a monster in the circle winning all 13 faceoff’s giving the Warriors a huge advantage and it showed on the scoreboard as the Warriors outscored the Pioneers in the third quarter 4-1 to seize control of the game. “Matt figured it out in the second half, got everything going and dominated,” Cunningham said. “He was winning every draw and that was the ability to kind of go make it take it which was huge for us.”

Manasquan head coach Sean Cunningham said. “It’s all for naught if we don’t take care of business down the stretch but it’s certainly something that these kids earned and it’s a nice accomplishment that at the end of the year you can hang your hat on.” Somerville took an early 1-0 lead three minutes into the contest for what turned out to be their only lead of the game before freshman attacker Canyon Birch scored back-to-back goals getting an assist from his older brother Jarrett on his second one for 2-1 lead with 5:54 remaining in the first quarter.

In that decisive third quarter, John Moran, Carroll, Paul Krueger and Canyon Birch all scored increasing the lead to 10-4 with Canyon Birch assisting on Kruger’s goal and Feldstedt getting credit for an assist on Birch’s goal. Pedrani scored to open the fourth but the Warriors responded quickly scoring five straight goals to put the game way out of reach before the Somerville added two meaningless goals in the final two minutes.

Lost in Manasquan’s offensive explosion was the tremendous job the defense did on the high-scoring Somerville offense. Led by defensemen Kyle LaBlanc, Edmond Mallet and Jack Fabean along with defensive middies Conor Kinneally and Brian Paturzo and goalie Tom Pollock the Warriors were virtually impenetrable with Somerville’s goals all seemingly coming on momentary breakdowns in communication; a glitch easily fixable. It’s that old cliché, “defense wins championship”,” Cunningham said. “They’re comfortable in both types of games. It doesn’t matter what speed the game is. If you want to run-and-gun us fine, play slow-down and methodical they’re great with doing that to. When you got defensive personal like we do and goal keepers doing what they do I don’t have to sweat it; they do a phenomenal job.” Jarrett Birch had high praise for his defense as well. “Knowing that we have the defense that we do with a goalie that’s been standing on his head all season it gives us a lot more confidence on the attack.” Canyon Birch finished with five goals and an assist while his brother Jarrett added two goals and two assists. Carroll ended up scoring three goals while Feldstedt and Krueger each had two goals with Feldstedt adding an assist and Moran chipping in with a goal. “We practice what we’re going to do on offense every single day,” Birch added. “Coming up to a game we practice over-and-over-and-over what we’re going to do and how we’re going to play it. Once it comes to game time and we see what they’re running we know what we’re going to do like the back of our hand always knowing where the other is going to be.”

Then with 40 seconds remaining in the quarter, Jarrett Birch found Pat Feldstedt who simultaneously converted for a 3-1 lead as the quarter ended.

By Michael Ward With summer just weeks away, some boy’s volleyball teams are taking part in the seasonal pastime not for recreation, but for the hopes of capturing a State Title. Entering into the NJSIAA Central Tournament, there are five Monmouth County Teams who are heading into battle, with the first round of tournament beginning on May 24th. 4th Seeded Wall starts out the entries of Monmouth County Teams. With an overall record of 19-3, the Crimson Knights Volleyball team has been having much success this season. Andrew Penkethman has been the ace in the deck, dishing out the most service ace’s on the team this season with 18. Patrick Cole and Nicholas Palluzzi have been bringing the heat as well with 14 and 11 service aces as well. Brady Donahue has been an assassin on the frontline, with 165 kills total. His total blows out anyone else on the team, with Palluzzi being next in line with 125. Shaun Scott rounds out the top three with 87. Wall will face North Brunswick in the first round of play. The Raiders of Middlesex County should be a beatable team for Wall, but there have been plenty of upsets that North Brunswick has been the culprit of throughout their 15-6 season. Christian Brothers Academy will also be in the tournament coming in at the 5th seed. The 21-5 squad from CBA will face off against West Windsor-Plainsboro South to begin the tournament on Tuesday.

“This is the furthest we’ve gone in program history so that’s a big thing for us,” said Jarrett Bush who leads the team in goals scored with 68 and is second in assists with 28. “After losing to Rumson in the semifinals it was a tough loss for us but we knew we had to forget about it because we could possibly see them again in the state finals.” Manasquan lost to Rumson-Fair Haven 8-5 in the Shore Conference Tournament final last week and with the Bulldogs being the No.2 seed in the South Group II bracket they’re now on a collision course to meet in finals if both win, as expected, their semifinal games.

Monmouth Teams Ready For Spike in State Tournament

Matt Kelly has been a force at long range with 40 aces so far this season, with John Arege and Jack Dunigan providing meaningful support with 28 service aces each.

MANASQUAN LACROSSE Photos by: Mike Ready

Arege has been the master of the frontline, with 368 kills so far this season. Jack Duigan and Robert

Mahala bring up the top three with 202 and 66 kills each. Louis Franco has been an effective set-up man so far this season with 571 assists, a team high. The Colts Neck Cougars will have a tough hill to climb when facing higher seeded competition going into the tournament. The 10th Seeded team will have some aces up their sleeve though when they face 7th seeded Hillsborough this coming Tuesday. Nick Panicali will be a threat to any team that faces Colts Neck in the tournament from long range, with 55 service aces to his credit so far over the season. Spencer Matthews is bringing the heat as well with 46 service aces. The duo of Panicali and Matthews are also big threats on the front line, with 245 and 232 kills each, both team highs for the Cougars. Freehold Borough will be facing off against 2nd seeded St. Joseph’s in the hopes of stopping their advance through the finals. The 15th seeded team is 10-11 on the season so far. Saint John Vianney will also have a tight match to squeeze through in the opening round as they face Hunterdon Central, a team that is only one slot their junior in seeding. The 8th and 9th seeded teams will face off on Tuesday with excellent players on both sides. Alex Rufo will be one to watch, as he’s racked up 29 aces and provided 398 assists throughout the season. Mitch Ionescu will be the one tasked to deliver the ball to the other side with authority, with his record of 156 kills so far this season. The opening first round of the 2016 NJSIAA Central Volleyball Tournament begins on Tuesday, May 24th, with the 2nd round taking place two days later. Semi-Finals will be held on the 1st of June with the Final Game taking place on June 3rd.

SAINT JOHN VIANNEY BEATS MIDDLETOWN NORTH FOR MCT CHAMPIONSHIP By Jim Rosa

by sophomore centerfielder Lindsey Barron in the top of the second. “Defense wins championships and I always tell my girls that,” Lombardi said. “They were there to pick Demi up today. They’re a very good hitting team, a great team, but at the end of the day I feel very confident in our defense that we can hang with any team.” Lions starting pitcher Riley Kernan led off the inning with a line-drive single to left field before Alyssa Vertrano’s oneout single into right field put runners at first and second base. Rivera then got Ryan Rasmussen on short pop-up to the shortstop for the second out.

SJV’S #16 ANNE MANGANIELLO WALL TOWNSHIP – After graduating Shore Conference Player of the Year Ashley Ventura and fellow first team All-State member Jess Carlucci, along with first team AllShore selections Erica Krumbine and Claire Stefannelli, most thought this just might be the year No.1 seed Saint John Vianney took a step back from dominating the Shore Conference softball scene as it has for so many years. But after beating second-seeded Middletown North 4-1 Saturday in Wall Township for their unprecedented seventh straight Monmouth County Tournament title, Saint John Vianney proved the naysayers wrong and once again stamped themselves as the team to beat in Shore Conference softball.

With runners now on first and second, two outs and the runners going on the pitch, Payleigh Behan drilled a linedrive single into centerfield that Barron charged and fired a perfect strike to catcher Ally Jones who then made the tag for the out. “I saw her coming around and I knew I had to get her,” Barron said. “It was for my team. They’re working hard for me and I’ve got to work hard for them. I came up throwing and I had to get her. I knew if I gave her a good throw, Alley would get the job done and tag her out.” “That was a game changer,” Rivera said. “If she doesn’t make that play the game would’ve been different. It’s such a great feeling that I can go out there and trust my defense. I don’t throw a hundred miles an hour, I just trust my pitches and spin the ball. I’m confident in my defense so therefore I’m confident in myself.”

“We had some big-time players in the past,” Saint John Vianney head coach Kim Lombardi said. “We have a very young team and you know what, my girls are getting it done this year. They’ve worked so hard and I couldn’t be more proud of them.”

Gianna Mavica led off the inning with a walk. Then with one out, Antonia Pacillo hammered what looked like a sure home run to dead centerfield that Behan leaped for and had it in her glove for a second but couldn’t hole for a catch with Pacillo going to first with a long single and Mavica stopping at second. Anne Manganiello followed with soft single just out of the reach of the shortstop Vetrano on the edge of the outfield grass loading the bases before Kernan uncorked a wild pitch scoring Mavica for the game’s first run and advancing the runners to second and third base. Sophomore shortstop Shelli Rivard then grounded to first but instead of getting the sure out, the Lions opted for a play at the plate. Pacillo beat the throw home and the ball got away from Rasmussen allowing Manganiello to also score for a 3-0 lead. After Helena Coppola grounded out, Behan misplayed a sinking liner to center dropping it at the last second for an error as the fourth run of the inning crossed the plate. Rivera ran into her only real trouble of the game in the top of the sixth. Kernan led off with a sharp double to left field and designated runner Gabi Cerbo advanced to third on a passed ball. Rivard then made a beautiful running over the shoulder catch for the first out of the

SJV CELEBRATING THE VICTORY inning before Vetrano brought Cerbo home with an RBI single to left. Rasmussen followed with a soft liner to center for a base hit putting runners at first and second with one run already in and only one out. Rivera then bore down without any further damage done, getting Behan on a fly ball to left for the second out and Milena Wilton on a 6-3 grounder to get out of sixth before mowing down the side in order in the seventh inning for a 4-1 win. “I was just going after the batters,” Rivera said. “I think I keep my composure. Nothing really rattles me.” The biggest difference in the game was that Saint John Vianney was able to capitalize on their breaks and making the plays while Middletown North failed to do that when it counted most. “It’s who gets the big hit,” Lombardi said. “It’s who makes that play in the hole and who doesn’t who’s going to win a championship game.”

Saint John Vianney, ranked No.4 in the state and No.1 in the Shore Conference, moved to 16-1 on the year while Middletown North, No.6 in the state and second in the Shore Conference saw its record fall to 20-2.

Middletown North, who stranded nine runners on base including three in scoring position, was led by Kernan who held Saint John Vianney to just three hits and two earned runs and complemented her performance on the mound going 3-for-3 with a double at the plate while Vetrano went 2-for-3 with an RBI.

Lancers starting pitcher Demi Rivera, who only had six innings of work on the mound a year ago, may not be the dominant hurler that Ventura was for the Lancers, but she definitely knows how the get the job done. Although Rivera gave up 10 Middletown North hits, she didn’t walk a batter and got the outs when she needed them. She held Middletown North’s two All-State players, No.3 batter Christine Gebhardt (Manhattan College) and clean-up hitter Kayla Gallo (Florida International University) to a combined 1-for- 8 on the day, including retiring them in the top of the seventh when she had her only 1-2-3 inning of the game. Saint John Vianney has always prided itself on its rocksolid defense play and Saturday it was on full display once again bailing out Rivera on a game-changing play

The Lancers put up their only runs of the game in the bottom of the fourth hanging four runs on Kernan in an inning the Lions would like to forget.

Saint John Vianney received a first-round bye as the No. 2 seed in the Shore Conference Tournament and will face 15th-seeded Wall in the round of 16. As the No.3 seed, Middletown North also receives a bye and will play 19thseeded Mater Dei in the round of 16. If things play out as expected, the Lancers and Lions will square off again in the SCT semifinals.

Also, the Lancers were seeded first in the NJSIAA NonPublic South A bracket while Middletown North was given the No. 1 seed in the North Jersey II Group III bracket.

RFH RECLAIMS LAX TITLE IN WIN OVER MANASQUAN By Ted Kaiser

RUMSON— One of the primary goals set before the season by the RumsonFair Haven boys lacrosse team was to reclaim the Shore Conference Tournament crown. The Bulldogs had won four straight SCT titles until losing a nail-biter to Southern Regional last year. So for 2016, RFH set their sights on a record sixth SCT championship in the tournaments 12-year history. The opportunity finally came last week in the SCT final against Manasquan. The Warriors had the same number of wins (14) as RFH and entered the contest without any fear. The first quarter ended in a 1-1 tie and the top-seeded Bulldogs held only a one-goal lead at halftime. They opened up a two-goal

advantage early in the fourth quarter and seemed to be on the road to another big win. However, the Warriors had other ideas. James Pedergist and Devan Carroll scored back-to-back to tie the game at 5-5. For a few minutes, it seemed as if Manasquan could pull the upset. But RFH would not be fazed by the sudden shift in momentum. Junior Charlie Currie found the back of the net for the goal-ahead goal with 4:15 remaining. The Bulldogs would tack on two more scores and held on for an 8-5 victory for their 15th victory of the year and the SCT championship. Manasquan had two goals by Pat Felstedt and one goal each by Jar-

rett Birch, James Pendergist, and Devan Carroll. Tom Pollock made six saves in net. RFH received scoring from Robbie Garavente with three goals and Griffin Shultz, Charlie Curran, Colin Pavluk, Alex Werner, and Peter Lucas each with one. Goaltender Kyle Knapp had six saves. Now the Bulldogs turn their attention to the state tournament, where they became he first Shore Conference team to win a state championship by capturing the Group I title in 2015. A repeat performance will not be easy as they are now in Group II, but RFH is more than capable of pulling off a another championship, just as they have done in the past in the SCT.

RUMSON-FAIR HAVEN WINS FOURTH STRAIGHT GIRLS SCT LACROSSE CHAMPIONSHIP By Mike Ready

WEST LONG BRANCH – The No.1 seeded Lady Bulldogs claimed their fourth straight Shore Conference Tournament title and fifth overall in program history taking care of second-seeded Shore Regional with a dominating 13-5 win Monday at Monmouth University.

to 63 games, dating back to 2012.

The championship game was a rematch of last year’s SCT final in which

Shore Regional still has the most titles (8), most appearances (11) and the best SCT final record at 8-3 but the Bulldogs are inching closer with nine SCT final appearances, titles (5) and now hold a 5-4 record in finals with all four of their losses coming against Shore Regional.

RFH’S #16 MAGGIE JENNINGS the Bulldogs handled the Blue Devils in much the same fashion when they beat them 17-5 for the title. The Bulldogs win was their ninth straight over Shore Regional (12-6), pushed its current winning streak to a state-leading 20 games and bumped its winning streak against Shore Conference teams

time playing a slowdown game where they were more concerned with keeping the ball out of the Bulldogs hands then putting the ball in the net.

As the four-time defending SCT champions, the Bulldogs became only the second girls lacrosse team ever to win at least four SCT in a row, as Shore Regional did from 2005-to-2009.

Entering the game, Rumson-Fair Haven (20-1) was the only Shore Conference team ranked in the most recent NJ.com top 20 where they hold onto the No.7 spot and have been ranked No.1 in the Asbury Park Press top 10 all season long. Shore Regional has lost to one other Shore Conference team this season, Manasquan, and came into the game ranked No.3 in the Shore in the APP top 10, No.2 in the NJ.com Shore Conference rankings and 37th in the state according to lax power which ranked the Bulldogs 6th. Rumson beat fourth-seeded Manasquan 12-1 in the semifinals to advance while

That strategy worked up to a point, but it’s impossible to keep a team as gifted as Rumson down for long as the Bulldogs proved. Steinhacker set the tone for the second half scoring two quick goals to increase the lead to 8-3 before Villonova University-bound senior Brittany Bruno added two more and Littleson scored on an assist from Vanderbilt University Elizabeth Scarrone to push the lead to 11-4.

the Blue Devils took down third-seeded Red Bank Catholic 14-8 for a trip to the finals. The Bulldogs also claimed the Class A Central division title with a perfect 12-0 record, two games better that both Manasquan and Shore. In this year’s final, Bucknell Universitybound and 2015 Shore Conference Player of the year Morgan Steinhacker was once again almost unbeatable on the draw winning 17-of-20 and forcing Shore Regional to defend Rumson’s high-octane offensive attack most the game; pinning them in their defensive end most the game. Shore took the lead on the initial possession of the game as senior Sarah Goerge bent a shot past Rumson goalie Anna Babiak for the Blue Devils firstand-only lead of the game. That lead would be short lived as Steinhacker won a pair of draw controls before sophomore Kyra Weiner and senior Jacqueline Littleson quickly converted giving the Bulldogs the lead they would never relinquish. The Blue Devils kept the score within shooting distance trailing 6-3 at half-

Bruno and Weiner each finished with three goals while Littleson and Steinacker added two goals with an assist each and senior attacker Kiley Pearman, 2015 All-American Maggie Jennings and Elon University commit Gill Curran all chipped on goal. Scarrone finished the game with a team-leading three assists. Allie Reiser finished with three goals, including No. 100 of her career, and Sarah George had one goal and two assists to lead Shore’s offense along with Mary Kate George who added a goal.

RFH’S #7 KYRA WEINER The Bulldogs are the top-seed in the NJSIAA South Jersey Group II Tournament while Shore Regional was awarded the second-seed in South Jersey Group I Tournament. In the opening rounds, Rumson easily disposed of No.16 seed Paul IV in the opening round 18-1 and will now play ninth-seeded Delran in the quarterfinals. Shore Regional easily handled No.15 Gill St. Bernard’s by the score of 18-4 to move on to the quarterfinals against No.7 Bishop Eustace.

Jackson Liberty Takes OCT Softball Title Over Donovan Catholic by Jim Rosa

The Lions of Jackson Liberty added another piece to their impressive resume this season. In what ended up being an offensive affair; Jackson Liberty was able out play Donovan Catholic when it mattered most in Wednesday’s ball. The Jackson Liberty Softball team had yet to win an OCT title. However, in 2016, they found themselves on the right side of a 9-7 game. Sophomore Meghan Conroy got the win for the Lions as she demonstrated the ability to keep herself composed throughout a complete game. “This was a goal of ours throughout the entirety of the season and one that we set from day one of practice,” Conroy said. She followed by addressing just how important this win was for the seniors. “This was a big win for the seniors. Although we know that this is not the end of the road; this is a great way for them to go out.” Senior leadership has been a common theme for this Lion team and came to life in their most important game this season thus far. Senior catcher Chelsea Czapkowski scored the first run of the game to give Jackson Liberty a quick 1-0 lead after an error by the Donovan Catholic Shortstop. Kayla Hayes would come home with the second Jackson Liberty run making the score 2-0 at the end of the first inning. “I am so proud of my

team. It is great to see how hard we have been working. To get to this point and accomplish this win is amazing. I'm especially excited to see how far we will go having so much talent,” Czapkowski said on her teams OCT championship win.

lead. Donovan, however, would fall just short after they were able to cut the lead to 9-4 and eventually 9-7 on an Lindsey Hay home run. “Every win is huge for us,” Coach Borrelli said. “Each win throughout the season prepared us for tonight

and that is how we came away with the victory”. The Lions will now head into the Shore Conference Tournament where they look to improve upon an already historic 2016 postseason. They have been selected as the number one seed and look forward to playing their best softball during that stretch.

Jackson Liberty would extend the lead to 5-0 in the bottom of the third inning. The runs all scored with two outs in the inning as the Lions showed their situational hitting capabilities. Brianna Holder and Kayla Conners each had come through with base hits followed by Czapkowski driving home Holder to make it a 3-0 game. Jackson Liberty had seemed like they would be in entire control for the remainder of the game. Donovan Catholic would get on the board in the top half of the next inning. Amanda MacBurnie would be credited with the RBI to make it a 5-1 game. Jackson Liberty, however, would not stop there as Donovan Catholic was beginning to gain momentum. The Lions would score two runs to make it a 7-1 game and eventually stretch the lead to 9-1. In the 5th inning, Donovan Catholic would find some scoring changes and they would take advantage of them. Kati Vasquez drove in two runs in the 5th inning to make it a 9-3 Jackson Liberty

DALATRI DAZZLES AS CBA BEATS RED BANK CATHOLIC FOR MONMOUTH COUNTY TOURNAMENT TITLE By Mike Ready

LAKEWOOD – In his second start since missing two and a half weeks nursing a hamstring injury and pitching on only three day’s rest, Christian Brothers Academy ace Luca Dalatri again showed why he’s one (Barnegat’s Jason Groome being the other), if not the, top pitcher

in the Shore Conference and one of a handful of elite hurlers in the state. Four days after blanking Middletown South 3-0 on a complete-game one-hitter in the Monmouth County Tournament semifinals, Dalatri topped that perfor-

mance in the final tossing another onehit complete-game shutout beating No.2 seed Red Bank Catholic 4-0 Wednesday at First Energy Park in Lakewood. After striking out 11 batters in his win over the Eagles, Dalatri whiffed 15 RBC hitters without issuing a walk while throwing 96 pitches – 70 of them strikes. It’s his sixth win - five shutouts - of the season and 26th consecutive decision since the beginning of his sophomore season. In 41 innings this season, Dalatri (31-2) has allowed only one earned run (0.17 ERA) on 16 hits and just two walks while fanning 78 batters. He is now four wins away from breaking the Shore Conference record of 34 wins for a career set by 2006 Toms River East graduate and current Rutgers University pitching coach Casey Ganor. Dalatri, who has signed with the University of North Carolina, will most likely be selected in the upcoming Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft on June 9. He’s a workhorse and a bulldog of a pitcher not afraid to take the mound whenever called upon.

CBA’S #10 LUKE CHECE

In the 2014 Shore Conference Tournament championship game against Barnegat he won on three days’ rest and last year in the NJSIAA Non-Public A championship game against Don Bosco he went on two days rest after a long relief outing shutting out Bosco on a four-hitter helping CBA claim the No.1 spot in the final state polls.

RBC’S #57 Photos by: Fran Attardi 2-for-2. Nick Hohenstein doubled home the Colts first run of the game in the bottom of the second after RBC starter John Poccia hit Dalatri leading off the inning. The Colts upped their lead to 2-0 in the fifth on a two-out Cid Porter single on a hit-and-run that scored Luke Chece from first when Porter’s ball got past right fielder Mike Spinelli. Kenny Campbell followed Dalatri’s RBI triple in the sixth with an RBI single into right field to cap off the scoring.

Wednesday’s win was the top-seeded Colts third straight Monmouth County Tournament title and record eighth overall in program history becoming the only team ever to win three consecutive MCT championships.

CBA (17-7) now turns its attention to the upcoming Shore Conference Tournament and the NJSIAA playoffs. The Colts were given a first-round bye as the No.1 seed in the SCT and will face 17th-seeded Manalapan in the round of 16. In the state tournament, CBA was awarded a first-round bye in the NJSIAA Non-Public South A bracket as the No.3 seed and will face the winner of the No.6 St. Augustine vs. No. 11 St. John Vianney firstround game.

Dalatri also tripled in a run in the bottom of the sixth and finished the game going

The Caseys (20-5) were handed the No.1 seed in the same bracket as the

Colts in the state tournament and will face the winner of the No. 9 Pingry vs. No. 8 Notre Dame first-round game. In the SCT, the fourth-seeded Caseys beat No. 29 seed Pt. Beach 3-1 in the opening round then beat No. 20 seed Jackson Liberty 9-5 in the round of 16 to advance to the quarterfinals where they’ll meet fifth-seeded Pt. Boro.

HOLMDEL GEARS UP FOR STATE SECTIONAL FINAL By Michael Ward Holmdel’s Hornets easily cruised to their ticket to the NJSIAA Central Region Group 2 Championship Game set to be played this week. The 12th seeded Warriors, overcame several higher seeded teams to find their way into the State Semi-finals. First by defeating 5th seeded Somerville, then moving on to defeat 4th seeded Monmouth Regional, Manasquan had a hint of good fortune and determination with them as they closed in on the state finals. That’s was until they ran into Holmdel. Holmdel was able to win all 5 matchups played by large margins. In singles matchups, Justin Wain of Holmdel blew by Andrew Beer with two shut-out sets. Harrison Lin of Holmdel had similar success, finishing his time on the court with two 6-1 wins against Justyn Smith.

Dennis Barlotta cleaned up the singles slate by scoring a 6-2 win and then slammed the door with a 6-0 shutout against Manasquan’s Tyler Smith. In Doubles play, the duo of Charles Jiang and Blaine Liang kept their opponents off the board, by keeping the first set to a 6-2 advantage, then narrowly closing the door during round 2 with a 6-4 win. Chu and Tsai handled the fading opposition with efficiency as they clean up Manasquan in 6-1 and 6-2 matches. Holmdel is 20-1 overall this season, and is poised to take on Rumson-Fair Haven, who they;ve beaten twice this season. This matchup won’t be unfamiliar to either side, as Holmdel and Rumson have faced off in the last two Sectional Tournaments in the state finals, with Holmdel taking both. If they can make it three in a row, we’ll find out on May 23rd.

TOMS RIVER NORTH CAPTURES OCT TITLE OVER RIVAL TOMS RIVER SOUTH By: Jim Rosa

Few teams have been able to establish themselves in Ocean County quite like Toms River North and Toms River South have over the years. On Thursday, the two teams met once again after playing each other twice already this season. Toms River South sought to become overall champions of Ocean County after winning Shore Conference Class A-South outright this season. The Mariners, took to the field having defeated one of Baseball America’s top rated pitchers in Jason Groome to get to the OCT final. In what became a scoreless contest between Brendan Mullins and Trevor Wagner, Toms River North eventually broke a scoreless game in the 8th inning. Pat Marinaccio delivered the

single that put Toms River North ahead in the game. “We knew that it would take hard work and preparation. We knew we were going to face Wagner so we had been preparing all week. He is a great competitor. He is the type of guy I would love to have on my team. Even though he had shut us down in the previous two meetings against us we were still confident about facing him tonight,” Pat said on his teams winning performance Thursday evening. Brendan Mullins got the win for the Mariners and fellow pitcher Anthony Sasso was able to pick up the save for the Mariners. “Brendan has done a great job for us this whole entire season. For being a sophomore, he plays as if

he’s been playing varsity for four years. He’s a great leader and even better teammate. All of the guys have a lot of trust in him and he gave us his best effort today,” Marinaccio said of his sophomore pitchers after the game. “We consider these guys to be part of the team and even though they are sophomores, they are expected to go out there and give it their best performance.” Trevor Wagner has been great for the Indians all year long. Although he saw his record to 5-3 on the year, he was able to still provide 7 solid innings for his team in Thursday night’s OCT Finals. At the end of the night, he was charged with 2 earned runs over 8 innings pitched. While this would normally be very ef-

TOMS RIVER NORTH’S JARED_BELLISIMO

fective for most pitchers, Marinaccio’s single came at a time where any amount of offense could win the title for either side. “Once we beat Groome we realized that we are a lot better than we think. We have a lot of potential, so we are not intimidated by any other pitcher that is on the mound.” Marinaccio added. He stressed the importance of waiting for the right opportunity and being able to stick with a tough pitcher on the mound. This has been a key for the Mariners as they have begun to find a stable source of pitching to go with their top of the line offense. Toms River North has received the #3 seed in the Shore Conference Tournament where they hope that they can continue playing great baseball.
