One-Loss Lancers Skating Well By Ted Kaiser

Photo By: Mark Weiss MIDDLETOWN SOUTH ICE HOCKEY TEAM

Offensive Struggles Continue For Eagles By Eric Braun

Middletown - The Middletown South Eagles ice hockey team enters the midway part of their season at a disappointing 3-10-3 record, but it is not for lack of effort or teamwork. The Eagles on the season have a combined 40 goals, which is a step reduction from last season’s total of 131 goals. With only 7 games remaining in the regular season, the Eagles will need to tighten up their center ice play and lean on their veterans to make things happen in front of the net. The Eagles return a deep squad that includes current leading scorer, Erik Smith (7 goals, 3 assists) and Tanner

Nielsen (6 goals, 11 assists) on offense and Sean Sliwicki (.875% save percentage) in net. However, they

HOLMDEL— It has been a fantastic start to the season for the St. John Vianney ice hockey team. Building off a 14-8-3 record last winter, the Lancers enter this week with a 10-1-1 mark. Their only loss came at the hands of Rumson-Fair Haven, who they currently trail by four points for first place in the Class B North Division. RFH has one game in hand so the Lancers could pull within two points of the Bulldogs and potentially tie for first with a win in their second meeting. SJV’s latest victory came by a score of 4-1 over Ocean Township/Shore Regional (8-5). Senior forward, David Delseni, scored two goals and had one assist to pace the Lancers as they took the lead for good in the second period. Junior defenseman, Andrew Galante, added another score and Ciaran Devenney chipped in with his first career

goal. Defenseman Drew Fisher tallied two assists. Sophomore goaltender, Jimmy Ellis, had an excellent game in net with 24 saves on 25 shots. The Lancers won despite some of their usual scorers having quiet games. Sophomore, Mike Gelatt leads the team with 22 points including 10 goals on the season. Senior forward, Mike Davie also has 10 goals and is second on the team with 16 points. Senior Matt Kidney and Andrew Galante have also reached double digit point totals for the Lancers. The big rematch with Rumson-Fair Haven was set to take place on Monday, January 21st at the Red Bank Armory. SJV then faces Red Bank Catholic on Tuesday and Monsignor Donovan on Friday.

did lose several key players off last season’s state semifinal team. Middletown South has been in every game with their defensive rotations and will need to continue to build off of that play to jumpstart their offense. The veteran leadership and battle tested Eagles still have time to save their season and push for a Shore Conference bid, but they will Photo By: Francine Attardi

BRICK’S ANDREW REISS HAS CAREER NIGHT AS BRICK ICES TOMS RIVER EAST By Mike Ready TOMS RIVER – Andrew Reiss had a night to remember as the junior center scored seven goals in leading the Brick Dragons to a 8-5 victory over Toms River East Friday night at the Winding River Ice Rink. The win keeps the Dragons (7-32,7-1) in second place in the Shore Conference A South Division, one point behind first place rival, Brick Memorial (8-5-2,7-1-1). The two teams face off February 10th in what could determine the division championship. According to legendary Brick Head coach, Bob Auriemma, this extraordinary hockey feat by Reiss occurred only once before in Brick hockey history by New Jersey Hockey Hall of Famer and NHL star Jim Dowd. “That was quite a performance by the kid.” Auriemma said. Dowd set the New Jersey State career scoring record in 1987 with 189 goals and 186 assists. Auriemma is the winningest coach in New Jersey High School Hockey history with 678 wins. His win total also ranks him fourth nationally in all-time High School Hockey wins. In his 50th year as head coach at Brick Township, Auriemma’s teams have claimed six state titles, five Public School crowns and eight

Gordon Cups. His teams have also reached eight other finals. Last year’s team lost in the quarterfinals of the NJSIAA Playoffs and played Middletown South to a 4-4 tie for a share of the Handchen Cup Championship. Reiss scored the first goal of the game at the 13:55 mark of the first period and iced the game for the Dragons with an empty net goal with 36 seconds to play. His fourth goal with 28 seconds remaining in the second period broke a 4-4 tie to put the Dragons ahead for good. The red-hot Reiss gave the Dragons their first two-goal lead of the game putting the puck in the net at 8:02 of the third period. Three minutes later, he scored his sixth goal for a 7-4 advantage. His seven goals give him 24 for the year to go along with 11 assists for a team leading 35 point.

Teamwork Bringing Braves Back By Eric Braun

Manalapan- After a rough start to the season where the Manalapan Braves Ice Hockey team started out 0-4, the team has rallied to save their season and come into the midway point at 7-8. With their most recent victory of Manasquan, the Braves look like they have found the balance to make a push into the Shore Conference Tournament, but will need to push harder to make the NJSIAA tournament. With Tom Caccia, Parker Gaglione and Mike Lisciandro shouldering the load offensively for Manalapan with their excellent passing and shooting, the Braves have shot their way back into their season. Their defense anchored by goaltender, Joe Barone, and veteran defenders, Matt Ambrose and Patrick Zuidema, have found their stride after a rough start to the season and have allowed the Braves offense to play

open and free. This success has the Braves climbing the standings and making one last effort for a competitive seeding in both their conference and state tournaments.

Sophomore center/forward, Brian Lange’s, goal with 55 seconds to go in the first period broke a 2-2 tie to give Brick the lead at 3-2. Lange also assisted on three goals to give him 8 goals and 11 assists for the year. Junior Defensemen/forward, David Kearns, added four assists for By

RED BANK - After enjoying successful seasons in ice hockey past few years, Red Bank Catholic has been in a rebuilding mode this year with a 4-93 record, but coach Ken Carlson is beginning to see improvement of a young team.

decision over St. Rose. Bob Svenson broke a 1-1 tie with a goal in the second period and Matt Chinnici added an insurance goal in the third. Matt Weber scored the other goal for the Caseys. Junior goalie, Matt Cosentino had a strong game in the net with 27 saves.

"We lost 13 players by graduation so it is a rebuilding year," said Carlson. "We have only five seniors on the team including our backup goalie, but we have a lot of sophomores and the future looks bright."

RBC started out slowly this season, losing its first six games, but the Caseys have turned it around going 4-33 over their last 10 games including ties with Middletown South and Old Bridge, and wins over Red Bank Regional and St. Rose last week.

Cosentino was even better in last week's 6-1 win over Red Bank, making 34 stops while Goehring scored two goals and added two assists. "St. Rose is an improved team," said Carlson "We came out and played

YOUNG COLT MATMEN FALL TO STATE RANKED HOWELL By Mike Ready

pins Friday night, finishing off junior, Nathan Litowsky (12-5), at 2:22 of the match.

LINCROFT – Christian Brothers Academy’s (CBA) inexperience was too much to overcome as the young Colts (7-1,4-1) lost a 42-18 match to Howell Township (15-1,5-0) Friday night in Lincroft.

Mabry (138), who registered 12 wins against 15 defeats last year, lost a major decision Friday night to senior Ashanti Maurice (16-4).

The loss drops the Colts into second place in the Shore Conference Class A North Division. Howell, ranked 14th in the state and 5th in the Shore, takes over sole possession of first place.

Lone senior, Nick Mellon (132), who missed all of last season with an injury, is back after placing third in the 2012 District 22 Tournament.

CBA is coming off one of its most successful seasons in school history. The 2012 Colts (23-8) ranked 23rd in the state and 8th in the Shore Conference in season ending polls. However, the Colts graduated seven starters, including the Shore Conference.com Wrestler of the Year, Hayden Hrymack (42-2). Hrymack placed fifth in the NJSIAA Tournament and first in the District 22 and Region 22 championships. Combined, those seven seniors accounted for 188 wins in the 2012 season, and the Colts were expected to transition into a rebuilding year. CBA is stacked with underclassmen, including eight freshman, three sophomores, seven juniors and only one senior competing this year. Regardless, they do possess a small, but very talented nucleus of experienced grapplers. Juniors, Eric Beshada (126) and Chris-

Mellon is back to 2012 form as he tabled the Colts second pin of the night, dropping senior, James Sisoiak (10-7), at the 1:47 mark of the match. With the win, Mellon’s record improved to (9-2). Photo By: Francine Attardi CBA DYLAN VAN SICKELL V HOWELL JIM SLENDORN

In Friday night’s featured match, Beshada upped his season record to 121, with 3-0 decision over freshman, Kris Lindeman (19-2). Potentially, these two extremely talented grapplers will see a lot of each other in the upcoming post-season tournaments.

Another pair of juniors, Mike Oxley (182) and Tyler Mabry (145), provides the Colts some added experience. Oxley, 11-6 last year, has been a force while posting as impressive 14-1 record so far this year.

Freshmen, Sebastian Rivera, Carl Vasti, Dylan VanSickell, Ben Kuhn, Jack LaCorte, Chris Koutzen, Will Oxley and Bill Hroesbeck have combined for 37 wins this season, while sophomores, Nick Koutzen, Justin Kieslor and Alex Petrocelli have contributed seven wins. VanSickell (6-5) lost a grueling 10-8 overtime decision Friday night to junior Jimmy Slendorn (18-2). With so many talented underclassmen, the future is very bright for this Colt’s team. However, don’t be shocked if they continue to surprise as the season progresses and make a statement in the post season. Follow me, @getmready

Knights Look To Get Back To Winning Ways By Eric Braun Wall- Coming into the week the Wall Township Ice Hockey team was riding a 12-1-2 record, Top 20 ranking in New Jersey and one of the hottest teams at the Jersey Shore. Following a tough 2-1 loss to Monsignor Donovan (8-41) and 4-2 loss to Cranford (5-3-1), the Knights are left searching for ways to end their late season skid. The Knights have plenty of veteran leadership to regroup and continue their solid season, but it will have to start on the defensive end of the ice. Wall looks to have lost focus or steam over the past couple of games, but with Matt Marabetti and Pat Judge anchoring the Wall squad they will without a doubt take pride in resurrecting their play and leadership. On the offensive end the Knights are

not lacking for firepower as they have one of the top goal scorers in New Jersey in Sophmore, Jeff Morgan, who has 24 goals and 27 assists so far this season. Morgan along with Senior, Tom Panico (14 goals, 13 assists), and Junior, Alex Wuestnock (10 goals, 6 assists), lead the way for the aggressive Knights on offense. Between the pipes, Wall Township is anchored by Senior, Troy Klahre who has allowed a season low 21 goals with a .955% save percentage. The Senior leadership of Klahre, Marabetti and Panico and the post season run the Knights experienced the last couple of years should have them primed and ready to advance deep into the NJSIAA Group B and Shore Conference Tournaments.

Manasquan Struggling To Find Consistency By Eric Braun

Manasquan- The season is turning into a difficult one on the ice for Manasquan who enters the weekend at 3-8 and losers of five straight. They aren’t losing due to lack of leadership or effort, they are struggling to find consistency. The team’s offensive production is down compared to the past two seasons even with the veteran play of Connor Grogan, Mike Ludwig and Chris Miller. The three have kept Manasquan competitive with 28 goals between them. After a 2011 offensive season that they scored 132 goals and last year with 76, Manasquan’s struggles this season have come from lack of puck control at center ice.

Female Athletes Making Strides in Ice Hockey By Eric Braun

In an era where Ice Hockey is starting to grow leaps and bounds from where it was 20 years ago, more and more female athletes are competing at the highest levels with their male counterparts. Over the past couple of years females have been joining and competing along side their male teammates from in-house recreation leagues, travel teams, select teams and high school programs. The sport has evolved into more of a technical and speed game and away from the days of the “Broad Street Bullies.” Even if the brash style of play were to continue today there would be no backing down from any of the female athletes throughout the playing ranks, if the boys want to bang they are in for fight. Photo By: Mark Weiss Sports overall during the past couple of years has seen the female athletes ADELE WEISS #5 MIDDLETOWN SOUTH compete along side the male counter-

parts at the highest levels in ice hockey, soccer, field hockey, baseball, basketball, wrestling and football. Thanks in large part to Title IX, every athlete has been granted the same avenues for success for the love of the games they choose to play, it is up to them as athletes to push themselves to be competitive and successful. Throughout the Shore Conference this year, there are a handful of successful female athletes competing in ice hockey. Adele Weiss from Middletown South has become one of the main story lines for success for her female counterparts. From her time on the ice at the Red Bank Armory, Mid-State Golden Blades, NJ Rockets, NJ Titans, Princeton Tiger Lilies Tier 1 and High School teams, Adele has been able to shed the stigma as a girl playing hockey with the boys to becoming a fellow teammate as well as the first

ever female ice hockey player at Middletown South. When asked about her success and the challenges of playing ice hockey with the boys, she added, “Some people say ice hockey is not a female sport. Some people say ice hockey was invented by men and perfected by women. Some people ask me why I play ice hockey with the boys. I simply reply, I love the game and on the ice I am just one of the guys. I have learned about teamwork and developed camaraderie among my friends that will last a lifetime. This sport is my passion and it significantly affected my lifestyle due to the hours required to practice, play and travel.” To say that she has accepted the challenges is an understatement, she has by far excelled and shows with her continued success both at club and high school levels. On top of being a successful ice hockey player, she is also a top student athlete in the classroom being an honor roll student. With both her success in the classroom and on the ice, she is also successful at field hockey. Adele will look to continue her academics and athletics at the collegiate level. Other female ice hockey players are starting to push their way into the competitive ranks such as freshman forward, Jessica Haviland of Wall, and Theresa Hulse of Manasquan. Haviland who is already making a name for herself for Wall Township High School by tallying 4 goals and 5 assists in her first season. She continues to be a work horse in front of the net and does not back down along the boards. The Rumson Fair Haven hockey team is off to an 8-4 record this season and have won 5 of their last 6 games outscoring their opponents by the score of 36 to 11. Playing well as the season goes on is right where head coach, Chris McCafferty, wants his team to be and he said, " We need to improve each time we step on the ice." In their last two games, the Bulldogs defeated Red Bank Catholic by the score of 4-0 and Ocean by the score of 12-2. In the Ocean game, RFH scored 3 goals in the first period, 5 goals in the second period, and 4 goals in the third period for a balanced scoring dominant win. Brian Robinson led the way with 3 goals and 2 assists, Brendan Ban scored 2 goals and 5 assists, and Hunter Rotchford scored 2 goals and 3 assists. Goalie, Dominic Padula, was solid in goal making 10 saves.

terson, and Carter Taft each have 9 points scored. Padula has made 187 saves in goal for a .886 save percentage. Dylan Rotchford has also played some in goal and has 40 saves on the season. With the rest of the season ahead, the Bulldogs will be playing a lot of teams for the second time this season and he said, "Everyone will be gunning for us after playing them earlier this season, but we would like to finish the season strong and improve our seedings for the state tournament so we can play a home playoff game ".

In the shut out of Red Bank Catholic, Padula was even more impressive in goal making 27 saves and posting a shut out. On offense, Brian Patterson scored 2 goals in the first period (one of them shorthanded), while Rotchford and Robbie Caravante each scored a goal for the Bulldogs. So far this season Ban and Rotchford are tied with 20 points each. Ban has 11 goals and 9 assists while Rotchford has 6 goals and 14 assists. Local Ice Hockey Talent is Deep By Ted Kaiser

JERSEY SHORE— The number of ice hockey programs in the Shore Conference continues to grow and the talent pool is getting deeper every season. Public schools are adding hockey programs and there are now four full divisions of teams. There are also new efforts to build hockey venues such as the new Middletown Ice World slated to open by later this winter.

Wall and Point Boro are tied for first place in the Class B South Division while their leading scorers are duking it out for the most points in the Shore Conference. Wall sophomore, Jeff Morgan, has 51 (24 goals, 27 assists) and Point Boro junior, Steven Kovaleski, has 50 (27 goals, 23 assists). Rounding out the top five scores are Point Boro’s Carter Klotz (43 points), Toms River East’s, Charlie Mule (37 points), and Toms River North’s, Joey Campisano (35 points).

BRICK’S ANDREW REISS HAS CAREER NIGHT AS BRICK ICES TOMS RIVER EAST

Girls Basketball Season Off To Exciting Start By Michael Rogers

This years high school girls basketball season has had many surprises, upsets, and great performances and if the second half of the season is anything like the first half, we will see more of the same. Some records have also fallen (St. John Vianney's 66 Class A Division winning streak and Neptune's 59 game division win streak) and some new players have emerged with the already existing outstanding talent to make this year’s girls basketball season one to remember. St. John Vianney began the season as the number one ranked team and the Lady Lancers have played super basketball, but after losing Kat Egan to a season ending injury, the Lancers have a record of 8 and 5 and are ranked 3rd in the Shore Conference. One of their losses came at the hands of Red Bank Catholic who beat St. John Vianney for the first time since 2008 by the score of 48 to 46. The Casey's have a perfect record (12-0) and have a battle tested roster that includes Caroline Cocoran (15 pts per game), Alex Alfano (7 pts and 9 rebs per game), Grace fallon (7 pts and 9 rebs per game), Mary Kate Caverly (7 pts and 4 asst per game), and Alex Barazotti (10 pts per game). Point Boro who is also undefeated (11-0) is the #1 ranked team in the Shore Conference and have a talented roster led by

Rumson Fair Haven has dealt with losing players to graduation and has replaced them with players like Grace Stant (14 pts and 7 rebs per game), Jess Harvey (9 pts per game), Sam Sabino (4 pts per game), and the Miller sisters, Hannah (6 pts per game) and Emma (5 pts per game) that have led the Bulldogs to a 9-4 record and a # 9 ranking. One of RFH's losses came at the hands of Holmdel (8-4), who is led by Tara Inman (18 pts per game), Lauren Kelly (10 pts per game), and Cassidy Fontana (7 pts per game). Middletown South has been playing well at 12-1 and is led by a very balanced attack of Stephanie Karcz (11 pts per game), Kiera Gannon (10 pts per game), Jackie Dluhi (9 pts per game) and Christina Rutkowski (9 pts per game).

the Dragons. Kearns, second on the team in scoring with 10 goals and 15 assists for 25 points was recently switched from forward to defense and has excelled at the position.

With the talent and the fantastic play by many players and teams this season the second half of the season and the Shore Conference and State Tournaments should be just as exciting as the first half of the season has been.

Auriemma also praised Seniors, Nicholas Auriemma and Tyler Iannarone (1 assist), for their defensive play. Junior goalie, Jake Lampiasi stopped 35 shots, and made some incredible stops in the net to keep the Dragons in the game. “We gave them (Toms River East) some chances but our goalie came up big for us tonight.” Auriemma said.

Point beach is also undefeated (9-0). They are led by two great talents in Katelyn Flaherty (31 pts and 6 asst per game) and Marina Mabrey (25 pts and 5 stls per game) and are ranked #8 in the Shore Conference. Freehold is currently ranked sixth in the Shore Conference and have a 10-3

With only three seniors skating for the Dragons this season, Auriemma’s team is young, but improving with each game. “Were young and we’ve been inconsistent, so it’s always a bit of an adventure out there on the ice. But they’re all working very hard and that’s all you can ask for.” The coach said.

Wrestling Powerhouse Southern Keeps Winning By Josh Lashley

Year after year, the Southern Regional High School wrestling team is able to compete at a very high level within the Shore Conference, which in turn means that for a long time, the Rams have been able to compete very well against the best opponents in all of New Jersey. This winter is no different and as Southern pushes toward another run in the NJSIAA (South Jersey Group IV) Sectionals and then the District, Re-

gion and State Tournaments, they are earning solid team and individual victories along the way. This Wednesday, January 23, the Rams are scheduled to host Brick Memorial, another perennial powerhouse, who is also amongst the top programs in the state this year, in a major Shore Conference A-South Division showdown. Southern enters the match with a

pretty balanced lineup, which includes Chris Crane (sophomore, 113 pounds), Andrew Tonneson (junior, 126), Zach Wilhelm (junior, 132), Jake Campana (senior, 138), Chris Serpico (senior, 152), Gerardo Jorge (junior, 160), Connor Case (senior, 182), Jesse Bauta (junior, 220) and Cody Smead (senior, 285). In a big-time match last Wednesday, Brick Memorial edged Jackson Memorial, 27-26. On January 12, Southern topped the Jaguars, 27-24.

Standouts for the Brick Memorial include Joe Ghione (junior, 120), Jared Staub (senior, 126), Alex Donovan (sophomore, 138), Cliff Ruggiero (sophomore, 145), Joe Beverly (senior, 160), Tyler Richardson (senior, 170) and Matt Moore (senior, 195). In what by all reason points to closely, fiercely contested match with each individual match carrying its share of meaning, the Rams have a very good chance of earning a huge victory on their home mat.

St. Rose Boys Hockey By Kevin Davis

The St. Rose boys’ hockey team hit a rough patch as the calendar year changed, losing its first three games of 2013, including a 3-1 home ice defeat at the hands of rival Red Bank Catholic on Friday, January 18 that sent the Frozen Roses to a 6-7-1 overall record and a 2-4 record in Shore B North.

Following a 4-2 win over Middletown North on Dec. 31, the Frozen Roses carried a 6-4-1 record into the new year. However, losses to division opponents St. John Vianney and RBC

CBA Undefeated in Division Play

LINCROFT— Last season’s heartbreaking loss to Delbarton in the Non Public Finals of the state playoffs has only served as motivation for the CBA ice hockey team. The Colts have focused all season on getting back to the state championship and it has fueled a 10-2-2 record heading into last weekend. They’ve also taken their shots at Delbarton twice so far this winter. On opening night back in December, CBA dueled the Green Wave to a 3-3 tie. Then two weeks ago on January 12th,

the two foes tied yet again, this time by a 5-5 score. The Colts managed to squeeze out the point thanks to a late goal by junior forward, Brandon van Riemsdyk. Delbarton has not lost to a New Jersey team since the 2009-2010 season. “That heartbreaking loss [to Delbarton in last year’s final] motivated guys to have that drive this year,” explains head coach, Ryan Bogan. “We have a lot of senior leadership who played in

that game and had the experience of playing for a championship.”

Senior captain and defenseman, R.J. Steer, has 10 goals.

CBA is also taking care of business in the Shore Conference. They are a perfect 6-0-0 in the Class A North Division and on their way toward clinching the crown. The Colts have five players with over 20 points on the season. Senior, Matt Langlois, leads the team with 15 goals. Center, Chris Deatrick, has 25 points and van Riemsdyk and forward, Glenn Florczak, each have 23 points.

The Colts are set to face Howell on Friday and Middletown on Sunday in a weekend that should wrap up the Class A North Division title. CBA will keep tuning up because their unfinished business will really kick off when the state tournament begins on February 26th.
