ST ROSE GIRLS SOCCER GET BIG WIN AT SHORE REGIONAL By Mike Ready
WEST LONG BRANCH – After a scoreless first half in which they dominated the Blue Devils, outshooting them 12-2, St Rose head coach Mike Parshelunis felt there was a dark cloud hanging over his team. “I told my team at the half there’s a cloud hanging over us,” Parshelunis said. “We hadn’t scored in three halves and that’s very unusual for us, we just need the sun to break through. Rose Kane then shouted, ‘the suns out’ and I told them ‘now go out and play your game.’” St Rose, 10-2-1, 5-1-1 and ranked No.3 in the Shore Conference, went on to win 2-1 on the Blue Devils home field, but it wasn’t easy. Shore came out in the first six minutes of the second half and played their best soccer of the game. They pressured the St Rose defense, and appeared to have caught the Purple Roses off guard after controlling the game in the first half.
said. “This field is one of the most difficult places to win in the entire Shore Conference. They came out strong in the second half and put a lot of pressure on us. It was great for us to withstand their attack and then break out with two scores.” “Shore came out really hard at the start of the second half,” senior attacker Lauren Gates said. “We weren’t expecting it and we hadn’t scored in three halves so we really needed to compose ourselves. Once we got the one goal we started to relax and play our game.” Gates collected that all-important first goal for the Purple Roses at 49:51 after junior Kathleen Dailey made a steal and got the ball to sophomore forward Seneca Kinn-Gurzo . Kinn-Gurzo’s perfect through ball found Gates inside the 18, who then buried the shot into the far left corner of the net.
The Blue Devils had a number of scoring opportunities but couldn’t convert, including a nice stop by St Rose keeper Jordan Nash on a Megan Racioppi shot from close range off a free kick.
A little over two minutes later Gates found the back of the net again to put St Rose up 2-0. After accepting a pass from KinnGurzo, Gates had two touches at the top of the 18 before drilling a shot into the bottom right corner for her 13th goal of the season.
“It always comes down to this field somehow,” Parshelunis
“Seneca (Kinn-Gurzo) and I have great chemistry up top,” Gates
The 2013 Neptune boys’ varsity soccer team has made a habit of playing close games. Through Oct. 16, the Scarlet Fliers had played 15 games, eight of which were decided by a goal and another two that ended as a draw. ST. ROSE’s #11 Alex Oleck Photo By: Matt Schall
said. “We cause a lot of problems for opposing defenses.” “They’ve always been smart up top (Kinn-Gurzo and Gates),” Parshelunis said. “They’re soccer players and have soccer minds. They work well together and are starting to click at the right time.” Shore (5-4-2, 2-2) wasn’t through just yet, when 30 seconds later freshman Katie Stephens was knocked down with the ball inside the 18 by St Rose backer Ashley Candeletti, resulting in a penalty kick. Sophomore Jessie Egan then drilled a high liner just under the cross bar with Nash making a leaping deflection and near save, only to have the ball skip past her and into the net for the score. The St. Rose defense clamped down after that and shut down the Shore attack, while Blue Devil keeper, Katie Colaguori, made some acrobatic saves to keep it a one goal game. “I’ll take Jordan Nash over any keeper in the Shore,” said Parshelunis after the near save.

The inherent trouble with playing so many tightly-contested matches is that the margin for error is thinner; one brilliant play can win a game and likewise, a mistake can lose it. While a common viewpoint in sports tends to be that “breaks” like these within a game balance themselves out over time, that balance did not find the Scarlet Fliers in time for them to automatically qualify for conference or state tournament play. Instead, Neptune posted a 2-5 record in one-goal games prior to the tournament cutoff dates, which figured heavily into their 4-7-2 overall mark. “We’re right there,” Neptune coach John Knight said of his team’s proclivity towards close losses. “We’ve had a lot of injuries – we’ve lost five players to injury – and we’re young. But we’re battling.” The Fliers’ struggles in matches decided by a single goal persisted after the cutoff date with a 1-0 double-overtime loss at Freehold on Oct. 15. Neptune was able to rebound the following day by completing a season sweep of Long Branch with a 2-0 win, but finished out their B North slate with a 3-1 home loss to Wall. Despite their disappointing record, the Scarlet Fliers have found a bright spot in the form of one of their youngsters, junior Dante Crenshaw, who has alHEAD WRITER EDITOR ready drawn attention from the next level. asbury park VS mater dei football By Jim Hintelmann MIDDLETOWN TOWNSHIP - Although losing his fifth straight football game, a 26-18 setback to Asbury Park Saturday, Mater Dei Prep football coach Steve Sciarappa came away from the game with a great deal of optimism. Mater Dei had fallen behind the Blue Bishops, 200, at the half, but the Seraphs came out and played a much better game in the second half and had a chance to tie the game in the final minutes, but four straight passes were incomplete. “At halftime, we talked about not being ourselves,” said Sciarappa. “We wanted to cut down on the penalties and
committing fumbles. We played an extremely physical game against a quality football team. I’m excited with the way we played and I’m proud of how the younger players are playing well with the older guys.”
26-6, on a 3-yard run by Barksdale. Mater Dei kept its composure, however, and scored on a 10yard keeper by quarterback Christian Palmer. A run for two points failed, though, leaving the score 26-12.
Mater Dei began its second half comeback when Sam Miles intercepted a Barksdale pass at midfield and returned it to the Asbury Park 17. Two plays later, Derek Lopez raced in for the touchdown to cut the lead to 20-6, but a run for two points failed.
Mater Dei’s defense held for downs, forcing a punt, and Tyson White returned the ball 65 yards to cut the gap to 26-18. Once again, though, the twopoint conversion failed. Mater Dei had one more chance when a Bishop punt rolled out of bounds of the Mater Dei 31, with a minute left, but the Seraphs were unable to move the ball and Asbury Park ran out the clock.
The Bishops appeared to have settled the game early in the fourth quarter by making the score,

years. Barksdale set it up with a 50-yard pass to Ty Davis. The Blue Bishops scored again in the second quarter on a 15-yard screen pass from Barksdale to Jadean Stephens. A Mater
HOLMDEL - With a relatively inexperienced team, Holmdel's first year coach, Julie Martelli was uncertain about the outlook for this year's field hockeyteam.
This was the second meeting between the two teams this season with Holmdel also winning the first game by a 1-0 score.
Those fears, however, have proven to be unwarranted as the Hornets (8-3-2) have gotten off to a strong start with a solid all-around team effort. "This has been fantastic," said Martelli after a 1-0 shutout over rival St. John Vianney Thursday. "We played outstanding defense and work together a lot on double teaming and are much better and quicker than I expected."
The lone score in the game came just a minute into the second half when freshman Chelsea Covino took a feed from Olivia Moglino and slapped the ball into the net from five yards away.
"Although we have a young team this year, we have a lot of players who are playing different roles and new positions," said Martelli." Holmdel dominated the game with a 15-4 advantage in shots, but some outstanding defense in the goal by SJV goalie Meg Gilbert, who made a number of diving stops in front of the net, kept the Lady Lancers in contention.
"I got a great pass from Olivia," said Covino."That was my third goal this season, and it has been an amazing year."
SJV coach Alex Litowski has been a bit disappointed this season despite some good games.
Dei fumble set up the third Bishop touchdown, a 12yard run by Stephens, who broke four tackles and went into the end zone. Mater Dei will play host to unbeaten Shore Regional Saturday
"We could have been better this season," admitted Litowski. "We have had a lot of scoring opportunities but couldn't put the ball in the net. "We have six senior starters and defense is our strong point," she said, "but the division (A Central) is very competitive with teams like Rumson and Red Bank Catholic." Holmdel drew the sixth seed in the upcoming Shore Conference Tournament and will face Middletown South in the opening round.

FREEHOLD TOWNSHIP HOLDS OFF COLTS NECK IN A NORTH SHOWDOWN By Mike Ready
“Brian has a broken orbital bone under his eye,” Briggs said. “He’s hoping to be back for the states but he’ll be out until at least early November. It was a coaching decision not to play Nick, but we hope to have him back on the field Friday against Middletown South.”
Freehold Twp. was up to the task as they gutted out a hardfought 2-1 victory by scoring two opportunistic first half goals and playing solid second half defense. “Last week kind of hurt us,” Patriot head coach Todd Briggs said. “We have some injury complications we’re dealing with and we’re also a young team which we knew would be challenged at some point this season. The good thing about today is that we bent but didn’t break and we’re heading back in the right direction. The win keeps them alive in the division and hopefully a top five
Junior Kyle Czajkowski knocked home a rebound off a blocked shot by junior Mike Maltese at the 12-minute mark for an early 1-0 Patriot lead. The keeper appeared to have an easy save on Maltese but misplayed the ball, allowing Czajkowski score on a wide open net. “Mike was playing a little out of position with our captains
Czajkowski ‘s twin brother Jason handed the Patriots a 2-0 lead on another unusual scoring play with 26:50 showing on the game clock. On the play, sophomore Mark Fasano cut through the center defense and played junior Tim O’Donnel, who flicked it towards the goal finding Jason Czajkowski streaking in. Czajkowski‘s shot was tipped by the keeper, with the ball bouncing over his head as Czajkowski slipped in behind him to finish off the play.

“This was a big win for us,” Maltese said. “Especially against cross town rival Colts Neck, who took the A North from us last season. We knew coming in this game could be the difference between a 4-or5 seed or an 8-or-9 seed in the Shore Conference Tournament. This gives us momentum back on our side and that’s huge going into the tournaments.”

However, Colts Neck finally broke through scoring with just under six minutes to play pulling to within one goal with a lot of time left on the clock.
On the play, Freehold Township keeper Christian Ramm made a diving deflection off a Jason Tonelli scorcher and senior Devin Gavrushenko drilled the rebound into the far corner for his sixth goal of the season.

With 25 minutes remaining in the game and the Patriots still nursing a 2-0 lead, Briggs decided to switch to a more defensive minded 4-5-1 formation in an effort to slow down the Cougar attack.
“The twins did a great job for us today,” Briggs said. “They’re both very athletic, very fit and very fast. They stepped up as far as getting the final touch and that’s not easy. They know how to read the play and have the tenacity to finish them off.”

“Our goals were a little fluky,” Briggs said. “But you create your own luck with effort and ball movement towards the goal. On a field like this you just want the ball to be in their box as much as possible and good things will happen and that’s what we did.”

The Patriots played without its’ senior captains, Brian Dziobak and Nick Fasano making the win even more impressive. Dziobak is the Patriots leading scorer with five goals and four assists.
“We lost arguably our best player (Dziobak) to injury,” Jason Czajkowski said. “And we were missing our other captain (Fasano) so for us to win like this today was huge. We definitely needed this to boost our confidence and get us going in the right direction again.”

COLTS NECK – After going 0-2-1 in their last three games, the Patriots (9-4-1, 8-4-1) desperately needed a win against arch-rival Colts Neck (7-23, 7-2-3) Wednesday on the Cougars home field. And with the Shore Conference and NJSIAA tournament seeding’s just around the corner, getting back in the win column was crucial if the Patriots expected to make any post-season noise.

It should be a really interesting tournament.” “We played outstanding defense today,” Parshelunis said. “Kyra Martyn and Maggie McNiff were excellent in the back for us. Maggie’s just smooth, solid and so composed back there. As the sweeper she’s our last line of defense; it’s a thankless position. She’s the rock back there and has been doing it all along.” “We’ve played well against every team we’ve played against this season; win, lose or draw,” Parshelunis added. “The Shore Conference Tournament has been traditionally difficult for us, just going up against the larger schools. RBC’s Redaelli is a Force to Reckoned With By Ted Kaiser
RED BANK— When he’s not tearing through an opponent’s defense on the football field, Red Bank Catholic senior running back Larry Redaelli is tearing up the weight room. The leading scorer in the Shore Conference might make scoring touchdowns look easy every weekend, but his training behind the scenes is nothing but passionate hard work. Entering last Friday ’s game against Raritan, Redaelli’s efforts were to the tune of 15 touchdowns and 723 rushing yards on only 74 carries. That’s an average of nearly 10 yards per carry, or almost a first down every time he rushes the football. “First of all, our line is really, really good. They open everything up. The wide receivers get to their blocks too,” explains Redaelli. “It comes down to offseason training where those guys train all season. They are
always getting better, faster, stronger. I try to do the same to give back to the lineman and do what I can do.” His incredible season at running back can also be attributed to his training. Redaelli’s workouts are intense and he’s always the last kid to leave the weight room at RBC. Over the last two years, he’s put on 30 lbs. of muscle, increased his bench press from 200 lbs. to 335 lbs. and squat from 250 lbs. to 550 lbs. “Pound for pound Larry ’s the strongest high school football player I have ever trained,” says RBC strength and conditioning coach Joe McAuliffe, who has trained many top athletes over the years. “He’s a great kid and also one of the hardest working, most coachable athletes I’ve seen.” Redaelli has not only added bulk and strength over the
RBC’s #21 LARRY Redaelli Photo By: Francine Attardi years, but he’s increased his speed and agility. His 40-yard dash time has dropped from 4.7 to 4.4 seconds. His pro-agility drill time went from 4.9 to 3.9 seconds. Redaelli watches what he eats and does all the right things to manage his recovery time.
“Not saying other teams don’t work hard, they do, but we train until we cannot train anymore. We give it our all,” says Redaelli, who is considering Monmouth, Sacred Heart, Rhode Island, and James Madison among others for college.

Hornets Kicking Way To # 5 Ranking By Michael Rogers
The girls’ soccer team from Holmdel High School has been having a successful season with a 10-3-1 record. The Hornets are also the number 5 ranked team in the Shore Conference and lead the Class A Central Division with a 9-1-1 record. The Hornets started the season extremely strong and even though they have lost two very tough, close games, Holmdel still leads the division over Red Bank Catholic (8-2-1). In their most recent game, Holmdel lost in overtime to St. John Vianney (6-4-1) by the score of 2 to 1. Helen Burleigh made 6 saves in goal for Holmdel while Jessica Moskal scored the only goal for Holmdel on an assist from Gabriella Blair. Holmdel lost another tough one goal game as it lost to Manasquan (4-5-1) by the score of 1 to 0. The Hornets
could not score on the Warriors as they were outshot 12 to 9 in the game. In some earlier victories, Holmdel defeated Monmouth Regional (2-7-1) by the score of 3 to 0 with Alexa Lumbach, Blair, and Moskal each scoring a goal and Burleigh (2 saves) and Kelly Dronne (3 saves) shared the goalie duties in the shut out.
Zelina has added 2 goals and 5 assists. In goal Burleigh has 67 saves and Dronne has made 13 saves so far this season.
The Hornets will look to continue their successful season with games coming up against Red Bank Regional (4-8), Mater Dei (6-2-2), and Shore Regional (4-3-2).
Dr.’s Corn Got Flu?
Influenza (commonly called the flu) is a highly contagious illness that can occur in children or adults of any age. It occurs more often in the winter months because people spend more time in close contact with one another. The flu is spread easily from personto person by coughing, sneezing, or touching surfaces. Every year, complications of the flu require more than 200,000 people in the United States to be hospitalized. Serious illness is more likely in the very young, older adults, pregnant women, and people who have certain health problems such as asthma or other forms of lung disease.
Holmdel also defeated Rumson (7-5-1) by the score of 5 to 1. Blair and Hanah Lee each scored two goals and also added one assist each. Burleigh made 6 saves in goal.
There have been several widespread flu outbreaks (called pandemics), which led to the deaths of many people worldwide. These outbreaks occurred when new strains of influenza viruses formed (often from pigs or birds) and humans became infected because they had no immunity to these viruses.
So far this season Holmdel has had balanced scoring with Moskal leading the way with 12 goals and 1 assist and Blair who has scored 11 goals and 8 assists. Lee has added 7 goals and 9 assists and Lizzi

The most effective way to prevent influenza is by getting the influenza vaccine (the flu shot) and using simple infection control measures such as hand washing. Antiviral medicines can also help prevent infection if you are exposed to the flu. FLU SYMPTOMS — Symptoms of seasonal flu can vary from person to person, but usually include: • Fever (temperature higher than 100oF or 37.8oC) • Headache and muscle aches

• Fatigue • Cough and sore throat may also be present Flu symptoms usually improve over two to five days, although the illness may last for a week or more. Weakness and fatigue may persist for several weeks Flu complications — Complications of influenza occur in some people; pneumonia is the most common complication. Pneumonia is a serious infection of the lungs, and is more likely to occur in young children, people over the age of 65, people who live in long term care facilities (nursing homes), and those with other illnesses such as diabetes or conditions affecting the heart or lungs. Pneumonia is also more common in people with weakened immune systems, such as those who have had a transplant. WHO SHOULD BE VACCINATED? — The flu vaccine is recommended for nearly all people 6 months of age and older. The vaccine is especially important for: • Adults age 50 or older. • People who live in nursing homes and other longterm care facilities. • Adults and children who have chronic lung or heart conditions. This includes children with asthma. • Adults and children with chronic diseases such as diabetes or kidney disease. • Adults and children with HIV infection, or who have received organ or stem cell transplants. • Children and teenagers age 6 months to 18 years who are taking long term aspirin therapy and might be at risk for Reye syndrome.

influenza to high risk individuals (including people listed above). This includes healthcare workers, workers in nursing homes, home health workers, and people who live with a highrisk individual INFECTION CONTROL — Infection control measures, like hand washing and covering your mouth when you cough, can help to prevent the spread of influenza [1]. Frequent hand washing with soap and water can help limit the spread of influenza. You can use alcohol based hand sanitizers when soap and water are not available. Whether you are infected with the flu or are caring for someone with the flu, you should wash your hands frequently. Cover your mouth and nose while coughing or sneezing, and throw away dirty tissues immediately. Sneezing/coughing into the sleeve of your clothing (at the inner elbow) is another means of containing sprays of saliva and secretions and will not contaminate your hands. Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth since germs spread this way. Avoid close contact with sick people. If you are sick with a flu–like illness, you should stay home for at least 24 hours after your fever is gone except to get medical care or for other necessities. Your fever should be gone without the use of a fever reducing medicine. While sick, limit contact with others as much as possible to keep from infecting them.

Injuries To The Throwing Athlete
Page 11
by Gregory Mueller, DPT; Director of Rehabilitation, IvyRehab -Galloway, NJ
Throwing injuries are not only seen at the major league & NFL level, but can befound at all levels of the sport. Deficits in flexibility, strength, muscle balance and technique are all important factors that can both maximize performance and prevent injury. Throwing is one of the most violent actions the body can perform. The act of throwing transfers energy from the lower body up through the trunk into the shoulder, arm and hand. The shoulder is fully externally rotated before internally rotating to release the ball. During this act the shoulder rotates at 7000 degrees per second. After releasing the ball the body must slow the arm back down. This action is performed over and over at baseball fields and parks all over the country. This puts tremendous amount of strain on the muscles and structures of the shoulder complex and arm.
of the rotator cuff acts to compress the joint and center the arm in the joint as it moves in space. During the act of throwing, the position of the shoulder blade (scapula) and trunk rotation are key in allowing the rotator cuff to be in optimum position to function. Imbalances in the muscles that control and position the shoulder blade can lead to shoulder pain and injury. The trapezius is important in scapular positioning. A problem area seen in overhead throwers is imbalance of the upper and lower portions of the trapezius muscle. This places more strain on both the rotator cuff and latissimus dorsi (large muscle in the back). Repetitive throwing results in tightness in the back of the shoulder and rotator cuff, which limits internal rotation. Flexibility of the posterior shoulder and rotator cuff is another key factor in preventing throwing injuries. Lack of flexibility results in GIRD or glenohumeral internal rotation deficits can lead to both rotator cuff and elbow injuries. This particular deficit may be seen a lot at the lower levels of baseball where stretching may not be emphasized after pitching or between starts. After the ball is released the body has to slow the
www.ivyrehab.com
One of these structures is the rotator cuff. The rotator cuff consists of four separate muscles that originate on the shoulder blade and attach on the top of the arm. The role of the rotator cuff is to stabilize the arm in the shoulder joint during arm motion. The contraction
forward momentum of the arm. The force is absorbed by the scapular muscles and rotator cuff muscles during the available internal rotation. If the back of the shoulder is tight and internal rotation is limited,` the muscles are strained to slow the arm. This also affects the elbow. If internal rotation is limited it increases the stress on the inside of the elbow, which can result in the infamous Tommy John injury (a tear of the ulnar collateral ligament on the inside of the elbow). Stretching the structures in the back of the shoulder and the rotator cuff is extremely important to prevent this deficit during repetitive throwing activities. Symptoms for throwing injuries include; pain in the shoulder that may radiate down the affected arm, numbness and /or tingling in the throwing hand, fatigue and decreased strength, elbow pain, and decreased pitch velocity. These injuries include rotator cuff tears, labrum tears, capsular restrictions, ulnar ligament injury, as well as muscle strains and fatigue from overuse. Rest and physical therapy can help treat these symptoms and return the athlete to sport but sometimes surgery is required. Rotator cuff repair, capsular release, SLAP repair (labrum), and ulnar ligament reconstruction
(Tommy John) are all surgical interventions seen with the throwing athlete. Physical therapy can be effective in both preventing surgery and rehabbing post surgically to return the athlete to sport. If surgery is required recovery time can range from 6 months to a year depending on the injury. Rehab includes restoration of range of motion and strength before beginning a specific throwing program to return to action. If surgery is not required, physical therapy can be useful in returning athlete to sport as well as preventing injury. It is important to address the entire body. Trunk mobility and core strength are important as well and strength and flexibility of the hips. Moving up to the arm strong and balanced muscles around the shoulder blade help to give the arm a strong base off the body. Finally rotator cuff strength and flexibility are vital to control the arm especially after the ball is released and the arm needs to be slowed down. So, whether you are throwing a baseball or a football this fall, rotator strength and flexibility, scapular stability, core strength, trunk rotation, hip strength and flexibility are all important factors to prevent injury and perform at maximum performance level. Still, the Blue Devils, who had conceded a total of just six goals through their 8-1 win at Keyport on Oct. 16 – half of which came in their season-opening tie at Warren Hills – have several players who have found the net individually more often than their entire slate of opponents has collectively. That list begins with senior forward Carol Middough, who’s exponentially outscored

Wall Hands Freehold Boro First Loss Oct 28

By Ted Kaiser WALL TOWNSHIP— In a key Class B North Division field hockey clash last Thursday, Wall Township handed Freehold Boro with its first loss of the season. The Crimson Knights extended a 2-1 halftime lead into a rout to win 5-1. The victory improved Wall’s record to 13-1 overall and 10-1 in the division standings. The Colonials dropped their first game to fall to 11-1-1 overall. The win avenged a previous loss to Freehold Boro during September. Samantha Scire scored what proved to be the game-winning
goal and also added an assist. Emily Surgent and Nicole Kuerzi also had a goal and one assist apiece. Bernadette Crehan and Mary-Cate Gallagher chipped in the other goals for the Crimson Knights. While the offense was working their magic for Wall, the defense stepped up for a superb effort against the high-powered Colonials. Freehold Boro got off only six shots compared to 13 for Wall. Goaltender Hannah Manson made five saves during a solid afternoon in net. Wall is the fourth seed in the Shore Conference Tournament, which started with preliminary rounds last weekend. They will face the winner between 13th seeded Toms River South and 20th seed Matawan in their first SCT game this week. A win would probably line up a battle with 4th seeded Ocean Township in the quarterfinals.
Shore opponents by racking up 48 goals through Oct. 16. Sophomore teammate, Jessica Welch, along with seniors Carly Rosati, Grace Santi and Katie Thomasian, have all bested the six-goal mark as well. Shore’s offensive onslaught has come in support of goalkeeper Sarah Dwyer, who has 10 shutouts on the year including a
string of six that began on Sept. 30 and stretched more than halfway through October. The top seed in the Shore Conference Tournament, Shore will have its first round opponent determined when sixteenth-seeded Keyport and seventeenthseeded Raritan square off in an Oct. 19 preliminary.
Lady Bulldogs Second In Shore Conference By Michael Rogers
The Rumson Fair Haven field hockey team is having another successful season as coach Julie Vaccarelli has her team off to a 13-0-1 record and the Bulldogs are 9-0 in Class A Central Division. Their success has also earned them the # 2 ranking in the Shore Conference. Rumson has out scored its opponents 52 to 29 so far this season.
ley scored one goal and also had an assist in the game while Babeuf also scored a goal. In a 3 to 0 win against Raritan (8-7) the Bulldogs spread the offense around with McCauley, Donohue, and Lauren Meita each scoring 2 goals while Kane made 3 saves in recording another shut out. So far this season Maguire leads the Bull-
dogs in scoring with 17 goals and 7 assists while Melita has scored 11 goals and 3 assists. Donohue has added 8 goals and 2 assists. Kane has been standout in goal all season long making 39 saves so far this season. Rumson will look to continue its successful season when they take on Manasquan (2-81) on October 21st.
In their most recent games, the Bulldogs dominated Monmouth Regional (4-10) by the score of 7 to 0. Brigit Miles and Abigail Donohue each scored 2 goals apiece while Emily Babeuf, Payton McCauley, and Madison Maguire each scored a goal for Rumson. Goalie Megan Kane made 2 saves in recording the shut out and she has 39 saves so far this season. Rumson also defeated St. John Vianney (4-42) in overtime by the score of 2 to 1. McCau-

BENGALS TAKE CONTROL OF CLASS B SOUTH WITH 23-7 WIN OVER CENTRAL By Mike Ready BARNEGAT – With Friday night’s convincing 23-7 triumph over B South rival Central Regional, the Barnegat Bengals improved to 5-0 for the first time in program history and are now in the driver’s seat for the school’s second division title.
wide receiver Thomas Koenig fell incomplete.
The No.8 Bengals relied on the same formula for success that has worked for them all season, with AJ Opre running behind their huge offensive line, Cinjun Erskine’s timely running and passing and a defense that stuffed the run and created turnovers.
Three straight running plays by junior Nick Leone netted nine yards with Bengal senior captain and lineman Greg Moran making two huge stops on first and third downs.
Barnegat forced the first of four turnovers on the Golden Eagles first possession when on thirdand-2 junior Jordan Hardy fumbled and Bengals Mike Christensen recovered at the Central 32-yard line. The Bengals then went 32 yards in 10 plays with senior wideout Ryan Ulrich taking an Erskine screen pass over the middle for the score on third-and-goal from the 16-yard line. Ulrich then kicked the point-after to make it 7-0 with 5:31 left in the first quarter. The Golden Eagles were forced to punt on their next possession after a third-and-six pass from their own 43-yard line to senior
Barnegat took over in excellent field position at their own 46 and drove to the 3-yard line before being stopped on fourth-andone and the Golden Eagles took over deep in their own end.
“People doubt we’re for real given our past,” said Moran who also had a sack and a tackle for a loss. “But this is a different team. We’re a lot closer, we’re working harder and we’re not taking anyone lightly; we feel we’re legit.” The Bengal defense gave up one long pass play to Central in the fourth quarter but otherwise shut down the Golden Eagles, holding them to 28 yards rushing on 17 attempts and only 100-yards passing not including the one big play. On fourth-and-one the Golden Eagles were forced to punt from just inside the 13 with Barnegat taking over at the Central 43yard line after a fair catch. It only took six plays before senior running back AJ Opre burst
through the middle, broke two tackles and waltzed into the end zone for a 14-0 lead at 5:45 of the second quarter. Opre, who was second in the Shore in scoring (10 TD) and seventh in rushing (538) before last night, was a workhorse, gaining 124 yards on 25 carries before leaving with a knee injury with under six minutes remaining in the game. “I give all the credit to my O line,” Opre said while icing his knee. “They opened up some huge holes for me and after every practice we all lift together trying to get better and better. It feels amazing to be alone in first place; we came out strong and kept it going. My knee hurts a little but it will be okay.” Junior linebacker Manny Bowen, who transferred from Central this season, personally shut down Central on their next series of downs making two spectacular stops, including an earth-shaking hit on Hardy to knock the ball lose for an incompletion on third-and-11. Bowen had an incredible seven solo tackles in the first half. Barnegat was forced to punt on their opening possession of the second half after driving to the Central 40 and pinned the Golden Eagles down way back at the
8-yard line with some nice directional punting from Erskine. On second-and-7 from their own 25 Central quarterback Marquis Drumright’s pass intended for senior Isaiah Akers was tipped by Ulrich and intercepted by junior defensive back Ricky Gerena handing the Bengals a first down at the Central 46-yard line. Gerena held Akers, who entered the game third in the Shore Conference with 22 receptions, to one catch for six yards. The lanky athlete added another pick later in the game to give him a Shore Conference-leading five interceptions on the season. He also hauled in a 38-yard bomb to the 12-yard line just before half to set up a field goal attempt that was just wide. “I just did my job tonight,” Gerena said. “I knew it was going to be a hard assignment, and I just played where the coaches told me to play. We knew we had to shade (to Akers) a little more, but we mainly played our regular defense and played well; I was in the right place at the right time.”
around play by intercepting Drumright to set up the Bengals final scoring drive of the night with a first down on their own 46-yard line. It took eight plays before Erskine took a quarterback keeper up the middle for the final five yards of the eight-play scoring drive. The point-after was blocked and the score remained 23-0 with 8:52 left in the game. Erskine had another solid game for the Bangals going 8-of-11 for 95 yards and a touchdown and carrying the ball 14 times for 78 yards and a score. Central took over at their own 21 and on third-and-11 from the 20 Drumright hit Hardy in stride with a perfect strike at the 50-yard line and he was off to the races untouched into the end zone. Gerena’s second interception on the Central goal line ended the Golden Eagles final threat after they recovered an Erskine fumble at their own 35 and drove to the Bengals 27 before the pick.
Ulrich tacked on a 27-yard field goal, to make it 17-0, after the drive stalled on fourth-and-2 from the 10-yard line with three minutes left in the third quarter.
“We came out expecting to win,” Gerena said. “We’ve just been doing our jobs. We came in knowing we had to win it to get first place, and we’re not going to stop until we win the division.”
Ulrich continued his fine all-

CBA Cross Country Continues Quest For Greatness By: Pat Ralph
When great teams come around in the world of sports, it is important that we are appreciative for what they give in both the sport and to us as fans. This includes the likes of the Boston Celtics, New York Yankees, and the Pittsburgh Steelers just to name a few. When you look at high school sports, look no further for greatness than at the CBA cross country team. Built upon a 40-year old tradition of winning, the CBA cross country program has risen itself to new heights each year that has left many fans in the cross country world utterly speechless. In 2011, the Colts reached the pinnacle of high school cross country when they captured their first ever Nike Cross National Championship. In 2012, the Colts seemed bound for the same fate to be the first ever repeat national champions, but fell short and took fourth at the National Championship. As for 2013, the Colts have one goal in mind: to not come
back from Portland, Oregon this year empty-handed. After the departure of a starstudded senior class, many experts seem to write off the

On the local circuit, the Colts took care of business at the friendly confines of Holmdel Park last week by winning their 12th straight Monmouth County Championship. Despite resting some of their best runners, CBA placed five guys in the top 10 and finished with an overall time of 16:33.6, which is the third fastest time in meet history. Ferro and Kruppa led the way for the Colts with 5th and 6th place finishes, while the Colts swept spots 8-11 to win their 36th overall county title.
With the dual meet season complete and the most important races of the season inching closer, the Colts’ next challenge is the Shore Conference Championships next week which should be a victory. Following that meet, the Colts will turn their attention to the State Championship and Meet of Champions at Holmdel Park. After the Colts’ fulfill their New Jersey obligations, they will participate in the Nike Northeast Regionals and, if all goes as planned, a trip to Portland for the Nike Cross National Championship. Colts Off To Strong Start in 2013 Season By: Pat Ralph
Coming off a tough 2012 season in which high expectations were failed to be met after a remarkable 2011 campaign, the CBA soccer team has gotten off to a strong start here in 2013. Through 12 games, the Colts, ranked No.8 in the Shore Conference, stand at 8-3-1 with two games remaining before the Shore Conference Tournament kicks off. The Colts opened up their season with a tough road loss against the top team in the Shore Conference, Manalapan, by a score of 1-0. However, the Colts were able to bounce back well and rattle off five straight wins. The first three wins came against the likes of Howell, Middletown South, and Freehold Township. In the home victory over Freehold, junior Russell Romano scored the dramatic game winning goal to break the 0-0 tie and send the Colts on their way. As for the victory over Howell, the win was legendary head coach Dan Keane’s 500th victory as manager of the Colts. The Colts followed up with two more wins, which were against Marlboro and Middletown North, as well as a 2-2 draw with Colts Neck. Unfortunately, the Colts’ winning ways were brought to a halt by the Patriots of Freehold Twp., as CBA was defeated by a score of 2-1.
CBA’s losing ways would continue in a rematch against Manalapan, as the Braves took down the Colts by the same score as in their previous match, 1-0. However, since the two losses against Freehold and Manalapan, the Colts are currently riding a three game winning streak. In rematches from earlier in the season, the Colts knocked off the Rebels of Howell by a score of 1-0, followed by two straight 5-0 blowouts against the Eagles of Middletown South and the Mustangs of Marlboro. The CBA Colts will close out the regular season against the Lions of Middletown North and the Cougars of Colts Neck before playoffs begin later next week. With six wins against divisional opponents in the always-tough Class A North, the Colts are building up a solid resume of wins before the playoffs. Despite losing both matches against a very talented Manalapan squad by scores of only 1-0, the Colts have showed that they can play with anyone in the Shore Conference. Therefore, the Colts are a legitimate contender for the SCT championship. After the Shore Conference Tournament, the Colts will turn their focus to the NJSIAA State Tournament and the neverfriendly Non-Public A grouping.

Shore Conference Tournament is Set for Field Hockey By Ted Kaiser
JERSEY SHORE— The Shore Conference Tournament for field hockey kicked off last weekend with the preliminary round opening up on Saturday. The tournament’s top seed is perennial powerhouse Shore Regional. They have dominated the SCT with 14 straight championships, a feat that is unmatched in Shore Conference sports. The Blue Devils are of course favored for a 15th consecutive title this year. They’ll open the tournament against the winner of Keyport and Raritan. They will likely square off with the top team from Ocean County, Central Regional, in the quarterfinals.
On the other side of the bracket, Rumson-Fair Haven earned the #2 seed and will face either Toms River North or St. Rose in the Round of 16. A win would advance them to play either Freehold Township or Jackson Memorial. Freehold Boro is the 3rd seed and will battle St. John Vianney or Point Boro in their first game. SJV lost a tightly contested 2-1 game to RFH last week so they look especially up for the challenge of taking on the Colonials if they get past Point Boro. Holmdel and Middletown South will play each other in the other Round of 16 game on that side of the bracket.
Shore’s potential semifinal opponent is either 4th seed Wall Township or 5th seed Ocean Township assuming they get by Toms River South/Matawan and Red Bank Catholic/Pinelands. Wall is looking particularly strong lately after handing Freehold Boro their first loss of the season.
If the top four seeds hold, the SCT semifinals would be #1 Shore Regional versus #4 Wall Township and #2 Rumson-Fair Haven versus #3 Freehold Boro. While the field hockey talent level is high throughout the Shore Conference this year, it will be difficult for anyone to stop the juggernaut that is Shore Regional.
