HOLMDEL GIRLS GET BACK ON TRACK WITH 4-0 WIN OVER RARITAN By Mike Ready HAZLET – The Holmdel girls’ soccer team (8-1), ranked No.4 in the Shore Conference, rebounded from their first loss of the season - a 6-3 defeat to No.5 St. Rose last Monday - scoring four first-half goals en route to a 4-0 win over Raritan Thursday on the Rockets home field. “We just wanted to get back on track and play the way we were playing,” Hornets head coach Jennifer Conroy said. “St. Rose is a great team and you can’t give them the lead like we did. We kept fighting back and tied the score 3-3 in the second half, but we had nothing left after that.” “We needed to get back into the flow of things and get our heads on straight after the loss,” senior forward Jessica Moskal said. “We came out very aggressive knowing that they’re a very technical and physical team; we came out hard.” The Hornets definitely came out hard with Moskal and junior forward Gabriella Blair applying constant pressure on the Rocket net with a relentless array of shots. “We have some nice players up top,” Conroy said. “We have some speed this year and we’re really playing well together up top. One of our top scoring forwards, sophomore Hannah Lee (4 goals, 5 assists) was out today, but will be back Saturday.” Moskal broke through early for the first goal of the game at 5:28. After taking a pass from senior midfielder Claudia Collyer, she dribbled her way to the front of the net and beat the keeper to her left from about 25 feet out. The Hornets continued assaulting the Rockets goal and less than ten minutes later Moskal found the back of the net for her second goal of the game. She started and finished the play with a pretty give-and-go to with se-

nior forward Lizzie Zelina, who picked up her fourth assist (2 goals) of the season on the play. Moskal, the Hornets leading scorer last year with 10 goals and five assists, already has nine goals this season and is a high priority recruit of both Villanova and Fordham. The one-two-punch of Moskal and Blair (8 goals, 4 assists) is one of the better forward combinations in the Shore Conference this season and will only get better as the season progresses toward tournament time. “Gabriella and I have only been playing together for two years,” Moskal added. “We also play on the same club team and have the same style of play. We’ve developed a great connection and know what each other’s doing.” Senior midfielder Antonia Arena put the Hornets up by three at 23:53 when a Moskal shot on goal was blocked and picked up by Blair, who’s perfect crossing pass found Arena, who had the open shot to right of the keeper for the score.

“We gained a lot of experience in last year’s tournaments,” Conroy said. “We plan on going much further this year. The expectations are high for the seniors and they know it. They demand that they play well and it shows on the field. There’s great leadership and they all click.” “This is a very hard working team with very good speed,” Conroy added. “What I like about this group is that they go to the goal and they’re not afraid shoot; they’re always looking to score. That’s the big difference from past teams and I’m excited to see what we can do.” “I definitely feel we have the talent to win a championship,” Moskal said. “Every girl here has potential, gives their all and puts their hearts into it. It’s been four years together and we’re leaving it all out on the field. We’re all good friends and spend a lot of time together.”

Collyer closed out the scoring, picking up a through ball from junior defender Cassidy Wall from about 20 feet out and drilling a shot just inside the far post. Conroy had already started using her bench at this point and her talented reserves would get most the playing time in the second half. “We have 24 girls on the roster, so it’s nice to get them all playing time and game experience,” Conroy said. “I’m very pleased with the way they played. I can go to my bench and not be concerned; they’re up to the task and play with confidence.” With 14 seniors on the team and eight of them starters, there are high expectations surrounding this veteran squad.

MANALAPAN BOY’S SOCCER REBOUNDS WITH 2-0 SHUT OUT By Mike Ready

MIDDLETOWN – Monday’s 3-0 loss to No.6 Colts Neck just might’ve been the wakeup call No.3 Manalapan (6-1) needed, as the Braves got back on track Wednesday with hard fought 2-0 win against Class A North rival Middletown South on the Eagles home field. “The loss to Colts Neck wasn’t such a bad loss after all,” longtime Manalapan head coach John Vitale said after the game. “Sometimes a loss like that wakes up the guys and helps them understand they have to work hard for things – that things aren’t going to just come to them – it’s a lesson learned.”

“I think the guys might’ve have been a little too fired up today,” Vitale added. “They really wanted the ‘W’ after the loss. But it was frustrating because we do have very, very good technical players and it seemed like we kept stalling in the attacking third. I think we could’ve been a little more creative in that final third. We had our chances but couldn’t convert.” Statistically the Braves dominated the game with most of the action taken place in Manalapan’s offensive zone. The Braves out shot South 15-to-4 but the Eagles consistently frustrated Manala-

pan’s attack with hustle and scrappy play. “Whenever you play South you better be ready,” Vitale said. “They’re a very well coached team that never lets up. They’re a little young this year but they’re a really scrappy team, they played us extremely tough today.” The game was scoreless in the 31st minute when senior defenseman Chris Colen headed in a perfectly placed corner kick by junior forward Ryan Hammer. Colen out leaped two defenders for the head shot, beating the South keeper Sean O’Neil to his right at 31:20.

“Chris has been a big surprise for us this year,” Vitale said. “He’s very good defensively and has the ability to score. The goal he scored in the first half was picture perfect.” The half ended 1-0, but the game was far from over as the young Eagle players were hanging tough while thwarting the attacking Braves front line over and over again. The second half played out much as the first with the Braves dominating play but unable to put the ball in the back of the net. With just under four minutes to play however, Manalapan was

awarded a direct kick, about 20-feet outside the 18-yard box, on a South grabbing the jersey penalty. Junior midfielder Adam Weisberger cleared the line of defenders with the kick to a waiting Brian Dolan, who had positioned himself perfectly in front of the goal. Dolan lined up the ball and headed it home for the game-clinching score at 76:04. “Brian’s come a long way for us this year,” Vitale said. “He’s a very tough, scrappy defender, who’s fast and able

This past week Freehold Township defeated Middletown South by the score of 2 to 1 in overtime with Nicole Sassoon scoring the first goal and Lacey Powell scoring the winning goal in overtime. Pascoal made 3 saves in the game and Freehold Township outshot Middletown South 16 to 4. In another game, Freehold Township defeated Marlboro by the score of 2 to 0. Abby Pitts scored one goal with an assist from Powell and Mimi Novelle scored the other goal. Pascoal made 3 saves recording the shut out. The boys’ have upcoming games against Marlboro, Middleton North, and Manalapan as they look to continue their successful season.

The boys’ soccer team is having a successful season with an 8 win 4 loss record and leading the B Central division with a 6 win and 1 loss record. Head coach Christian Pontier likes how his team is playing and said, "We have played well at times this season and have played some tough competition. The kids have worked hard and the tough competition will prepare us for the Shore Conference Tournament." The Blue Devils are led by Donte Montesinos who has scored 9 goals and 3 assists, while Coal Allem has scored 8 goals and 4 assists so far this season. Eric Bolsh has chipped in with 1 goal and 6 assists. The Blue Devils offense leads the Shore Conference with 41 goals. Zack Goldberg is the goalie and he is having a great season with 4 shutouts so far this season and he is helped on defense by captains Jake Friedland and Conor O'Brien. In the middle of the field Shore Regional has Stephen Johnson who has scored 1 goal and 3 assists this season. This past week the Blue Devils easily defeated Point Beach by the score of 5

to 2 with Montesinos scoring 3 goals and JT Kessler scoring 2 goals. The Blue Devils also easily defeated Henry Hudson by the score of 8 to 0. Seven different players scored goals and even Goldberg, the Shore Regional goalie, had an assist in the game. Shore Regional also suffered a tough loss to Rumson Fair Haven by the score of 5 to 0 with Goldberg making 12 saves in the game. With the Shore Conference Tournament and the Group I playoffs ahead for the Blue Devils they hope to get back three-year starter Lucas Montesinos, who suffered a dislocated elbow early this season. Coach Pontier said,"If we continue to work hard we have a chance of winning the Group I championship and make some noise in the state playoffs".

MANALAPAN BOY’S SOCCER REBOUNDS WITH 2-0 SHUT OUT Continued from page 3 to score for us; as you saw on his goal.” Junior Stefano Muniz played a tremendous all-around game for the Braves playing what Vitale called a withdrawn forward position, where he’s positioned between the forwards and midfielders on the attack. “Stefano is very good on the ball,” Vitale said. “This is his first season with us after playing academy ball. He has very quick feet and never stops moving. He holds the ball well and knows how to distribute it at the right time and at the right place.”

If you take away the Colts Neck loss, the Manalapan defense has not given up a goal this season, posting shutouts in all six of its wins. The defense is led by Colen and senior Brandon Garcia on the outside and Dolan and junior Mike McNicholas on the inside. If this foursome continues to play at the level they’re playing, the Braves will be a tough out come tournament time. Manalapan’s last state championship appearances came in the

2006 and 2007 seasons. Vital thinks his team can make a run this season. “How far we can go this season depends on a lot of things,” Vital said. “Our work ethic and attitude are number one. We certainly have the talent for it but it’s how we jell and come together for a post season run. I think we have some work to do, we need work on making decisions quicker and the field and maybe a little more combination play from our forwards in the attacking third. If we can do these things, we have a shot.”

RED BANK— The U.S. Army All-American Bowl showcases the top high school football talent in the country. Now that game will feature Red Bank Catholic’s star lineman, Quenton Nelson. The 6’5 320 lb. senior was named to the 90 player game roster and will play on Saturday, January 4th at 1pm in San Antonio, Texas. "Nelson is a talented athlete whose leadership and teamwork qualities have made him a standout," said Mark Davis, deputy assistant secretary of the Army for marketing.

Indeed, Nelson’s work ethic is top notch both on and off the football field. He’s led RBC to a 27-game winning streak against Shore Conference opponents. Nelson has also taken on

a leadership role with the basketball team and inspired his teammates to lift with him throughout the season. “I’ve worked with a lot of players and this kid is it. He’s special,” explains RBC strength coach Joe McAuliffe. “He’s always in the weight room and drags his basketball teammates in there with him.” McAuliffe explains that unlike many two-sport players, Nelson is able to perform very aggressive training methods during the season because he eats really well and takes care of his body with only 19% body fat, which is rare for an offensive lineman. Dominant In September, St. Rose Girls Suffer First Loss By Kevin Davis

The St. Rose girls’ soccer team suffered its first setback of the 2013 season on Oct. 2 with a 1-0 loss to Mater Dei. Mater Dei was also responsible for the only prior blemish to St. Rose’s 2013 season, playing the Purple Roses to a 2-2 draw on Sept. 23. The lone goal in

the October 2 encounter was scored by Mater Dei’s Claire Begley, who was set up by Julia McCarthy. “Mater Dei is a dangerous team, and have given us trouble for the past couple years,” St. Rose coach Mike Parshelunis noted. “They’re an all-out hustle squad who defend well and use their

counterattack to their advantage very nicely. They’ve done a nice job of putting goals on the board all year, but they were able to shut us down, primarily because of their keeper.” Their struggles with Mater Dei aside, the Purple Roses began the season in incredibly dominant fashion. They opened the season with five consecutive shutout wins, added a sixth on Sept. 27, and it wasn’t until the final day of September – St. Rose’s eighth match of the season – that an opponent who didn’t play for Mater Dei found the net against goalkeeper Jordan Nash. “Jordan has had an incredible start to the season and is a huge reason why we’re in the spot we are,” Parshelunis said. “There’s no doubt that some of our wins would be different results if she wasn’t in goal for us.”

the Purple Roses, who netted the game’s final three goals in the last 15 minutes of play. St. Rose got two goals each from Lauren Gates and Seneca KinnGurzo, and Kathleen and Erin Dailey each added a goal. Kinn-Gurzo also had two assists. “(Holmdel) was a tremendous win for us,” Parshelunis said. “It was a very phys-

ical game that could have gone either way with 20 minutes left… but we were able to wear them down possession by possession… and knock in three goals in the final 15 minutes.” The Purple Roses have upcoming games against Point Boro on Oct. 5, at Point Beach on Oct. 7, and against Ranney on Oct. 9.

OCEAN AND WALL BOYS BATTLE TO A 1-1 DOUBLE OVER TIME TIE By Mike Ready

WALL TOWNSHIP – No.4 Ocean and No.8 Wall continued with their trend of overtime ties Saturday with a 1-1 double overtime tie on the Crimson Knights home field. “It’s been a strange year,” Ocean head coach Thomas Reilly said. “This was our fourth tie already this season; we usually don’t have four ties in two years. Our division (B North) has a lot of tough rivalry games, like this one. This year in particular it’s been tough to get a lead and keep a lead.” “This is our sixth tie this year and fourth in a row,” Spartan head coach Gary Linstra said. “I like to think we’re a defensive minded team, playing really good defense. It’s crazy what’s going on, we’re getting open but just not finishing. We’re grinding away and at the right time we’ll find the back of the net.” Ocean out shot Wall 11-to-7 but there were very few true chances for goals by either team, as both defenses dominated the game. Each team had their lapses of play, but was able to recover in time to make the stop, or the shot was directly on goal for an easy save. Ocean broke through at 36:09 on senior midfielder George Kavarakas’s third goal of the season. Kavarakas, a

first team All-Shore selection last season, got in front of the keeper and redirected senior midfielder Justin Silverberg’s free kick for the score. Both players made exceptional plays with Silverberg, a second team All-Shore player, making a picture perfect kick from 45-yards out and Kavarakas positioning himself expertly in the box.

By Kevin Davis

The roster of the 2013 Colts Neck girls’ soccer team is a young one, and that inexperience has been visible at times this year. The Cougars are off to a .500 start, splitting their first six games, but head coach Doug Phillips remains very positive about his squad.

“George was aggressive enough to make the run on the play,” Rielly said. “He arrived just as the ball did and skimmed it past the keeper. Justin’s free kick was as good as it gets, finding George in perfect position for the score.” The half ended with Ocean up 1-0 but at this point, it was still anyone’s game. Ocean tied the game in the 48th minute on a controversial non-call by the referee, as both sides varied in opinion on what happened. Junior Joseph Tashjy picked up a loose ball just outside the right side of the eighteen and played the ball to junior forward Brendan Barcas, who slipped the shot past the keeper from about tenyards out to the left. Barcus is another All-Shore selection, making third team as a sophomore.

Young Colts Neck Team Progressing After .500 Start

“We are a good soccer team that plays competitively, but we have lost tough games this season rather than won them as we have often in the past,” Phillips said. “We are young and working hard to improve.” WALLS #13 DANTE CRENSHAW Photo By: Francine Attardi

Phillips acknowledged that a recent track record of success within the program may have worked against his 2013 squad early on. “Having spent the last four years solidly in the top five of the Shore, I feel like this team figured winning is something that just comes easy for Colts Neck – and that skill alone is sufficient to succeed. [The team is] learning the hard way that winning takes a lot of work.” In spite of the result, the Cougars coach points to his team’s 3-2 loss to Manalapan on Sept. 30 as what he felt was his side’s best in terms of physical play and heart, which he hopes will portend better success with half of the A North slate left to play. With youth all over the pitch – the Cougars have started as many as seven underclassmen at times – there is genuine reason to be optimistic about a second half improvement. The side’s young core is comprised of junior captain Halley Cartas along with sophomores Bridgette King, who has scored four goals this year, Amanda Visco, who made third team All-Shore a year ago, Ali Russo, and Alana Janiello. Due to injury, the Cougars have also unexpectedly found Continued from page 12

Long Branch earned a key win over Wall Township 28-3. The Green Wave defense limited the Crimson Knights despite fairly even statistics in yardage. The difference was turnovers as Long Branch forced two interceptions and recovered a fumble. Also in the Class B North Division, Ocean defeated JFK-Iselin 42-7 but it was a non-divisional victory. Neptune got their first division win with a 23-13 victory over Matawan. Junior Aaron Mora rushed for two third quarter touchdowns.

JERSEY SHORE— Facing an explosive offense on the road, Lacey (4-0) overcame the loss of their injured starting quarterback to outlast Toms River South (2-2) 32-24. Starter Tom Kelly went down with a possible concussion, but junior Conor Davies rallied the Lions from a 21-13 deficit. Davies was 15-for-20 with 206 yards and two touchdowns. Top Teams Roll in Field Hockey By Ted Kaiser JERSEY SHORE— The top teams in the Shore Conference seemed to solidify their standing in field hockey last week. Shore Regional stays in the number one spot in the rankings after rolling past St. Rose 80 on Friday. Freehold Boro is chasing right behind in second. The Colonials latest chance to impress came last Thursday as they shutout Matawan 3-0. Lauren Bock paced Freehold Boro (8-0-1) with two goals and an assist. Ocean and Red Bank Catholic, both talented squads, each earned a win on Thursday. The Spartans blasted

Neptune by a score of 5-0. Carly Smith netted a pair of goals. RBC also pitched a shutout, 3-0 over Manasquan. Regina Burns and Christina Stewart each had a goal and an assist.

On Friday, Jackson Memorial continued the string of shutouts by the Shore’s best teams as they defeated Brick Memorial 3-0. Kara Molnar scored a goal and had an assist. Ocean shutout Colts Neck 4-0 for their second of the week as goaltender Bailey Herr put up another scoreless effort. Ocean County’s best team, Central Regional, blasted Manchester 8-0 to move their record to 8-0. Senior Lauren Castellano and sophomore Julia O’Connor each scored twice. Jaime Corrigan had a goal and an assist.

“We have to go through the entire A North bracket one more time and hope-

fully we can qualify for the Shore Conference Tournament,” Phillips said. “I think we could be a very dangerous low seed that nobody is looking to play in the first or second round.” In their most recent match as of press time, Colts Neck lost 5-1 at Howell on Oct. 4, dropping their overall record to 3-4.

“Their goal was unfortunate,” Thomas said. “Our sweeper Tyler Roman got to the ball first and was just trying to protect it when I thought he was run into from behind and knocked down. They then play the ball back in front for a guy to tap it in right where Tyler would normally be. The referee thought it was a fair challenge, so we have to live with it, but it’s unfortunate.”

job up top holding the ball and the Barcas brothers did great jobs too. I’m pleased with the total team effort.”

“It was discretionary whether it was a foul or not,” Linstra said. “We weren’t at the right angle and the ref was. We won the ball on the end line, brought it across, slid it back and had a good one touch for the score.”

“Tyler (Roman) did a great job marshaling the back,” Thomas added. “Justin and George controlled the center midfield and we also had some guys come off the bench that gave us valuable minutes. We had a few individual lapses but overall I’m pleased with our effort.”

Regulation ended at 1-1 and the two teams battled through two overtime sessions, with Ocean dominating overtime play but failing to finish a number of scoring chances. “I thought we did a great job, Linstra said. “They have some offensive weapons and I think we did a good job closing them down. Cameron Wenz did a great job in the back and keeper Jake Wishart made some big saves on breakdowns. Zac Hetzel did a nice

“Overall I think we played very well,” Thomas said. “We kept the ball and carved out a bunch of opportunities. Our defense did a nice job not giving up to many chances. I thought we had the better of the opportunities in the box.”

“I like to tell the guys that we’re a sleeping giant,” Linstra said. “The ball hasn’t been bouncing our way but if we keep playing the way we have been, keep grinding and creating opportunities the goals will come; hopefully soon.” Follow me @getmready

BACK TO BASICS SECOND HALF IGNITES MANALAPAN By Mike Ready MANALAPAN – No.2 Manalapan (3-0) got back to playing Manalapan football in the second half of Friday’s 29-14 victory over No.4 Middletown South (2-1) after a strange first half in which they were lucky to hold a seven-point lead. The Braves used three big scoring plays en route to a 21-14 halftime lead, but it was anything but Manalapan football. They amassed 93-yards worth of penalties on eleven flags, ran only 17 plays from scrimmage to Middletown South’s 34, and of their 125-total yards, 84 yards came on two plays. A punishing running game, opportunistic passing game and a stingy, big-play defense are the trademarks of Manalapan football that has propelled the Braves to three consecutive Class A titles, but in the first half Friday the Braves got away from that brand of football. “We got away a little bit from Manalapan football early on and got a little cute,” Manalapan head coach Ed Gurrierri said. “But in the second half when we had to run the ball, the most important time of the game, to finish the game, we were able to run; we imposed our will on them.” “I told them all those mistakes were unacceptable,” Gurrierri added. “I don’t know how many drives were kept alive by stupid penalties. Out of the eight first half penalties, most were on defense, giving them first downs.” Manalapan scored on their first play from scrimmage when senior running back Tyler Leonetti broke through the line and took it down the right sideline for a 53-yard touchdown jaunt. Leonetti injured his ankle on the Braves next possession after

10/9/13 - 10/22/13 • Jersey Sporting News carrying the ball three more times for 12 yards and finishing with 65 yards. Leonetti’s injury is not expected to keep him out of next week’s game against Jackson Memorial. The two teams traded possessions the next four series of downs before the Eagles embarked on a 14-play, 74-yard drive. Brey found junior tight end / defensive end Patrick Crowe on a 4-yard slant over the middle for the score at 6:02 of the second quarter. The drive was kept alive twice on a personal foul and a pass interference penalty on the Braves With the score now tied at seven, Braves junior running back John Cheung returned the ensuing kickoff 71 yards for the score. Fielding the ball at the 29-yard line, he immediately broke through the initial line of defense and scampered down the left sideline for the go-ahead score. “That was big and it felt great,” Cheung said. “But after that I give everything to my team because the way they played today was excellent. The defense was amazing in the second half and Imamu (junior running back Imamu Mayfield) really stepped up and did excellent.” Mayfield, a transfer from Freehold, stepped in for Leonetti and rushed for 106 yards on 15 carries, with 91 of those yards coming in the second half when the Braves dominated the line of scrimmage. South came right back with a 4-play, 65-yard drive that took only 57 seconds off the clock. Brey lofted the ball down the right sideline to senior wide out and cornerback Andrew Wisialko, who leaped above Braves cornerback Chris Cruz to pull it down and eluded a couple of would be tacklers for the score. The Braves replied with a quick five-play rebuttal of their own when on 1-and-10 from the Eagles 31yard line, junior quarterback Dan Anerella hit 6-3, 205-pound Rutgers-bound Saeed Blacknall with a crossing route. Blacknall bounced off initial contact a bolted to the end zone. The score was set up by a very questionable pass interference call, in which Blacknall appeared to have slipped on the play. The call negated an interception by junior linebacker Tom Coffey and Blacknall scored on the next play. The teams were scoreless at 1:53 of the third quarter with Manalapan’s defense coming up with a big stop after junior defensive back/wide receiver Nolan Peerless picked off a pass and returned it to the Braves 11-yard line. A false start and a personal foul made it 2-and-30 from the 31-yard line and Cruz picked off Brey at the 15-yard line returning it nine yards to the 26-yard line, ending South’s final scoring threat of the game.

Following the Cruz interception, the Braves promptly marched 74 yards for the game clinching score with Mayfield bursting through the right side of the line and accelerating down the sideline untouched for the score to make it 27-14 with 9:17 remaining in the game. “I kept thinking I can’t mess up for my team,” Mayfield said. “I knew I had to play with composure and that’s what I did,” Mayfield said. “I played a lot of varsity at Freehold last year and just had to get used to the fast pace again. I knew they didn’t know me to well so I had to show them what I have.” The Braves pushed the lead to 29-14 on the Eagles next possession when senior nose tackle RJ Krause came roaring up the middle to sack Brey for a safety. Senior middle linebacker Matt McCann, who had two sacks on the night, played a tremendous game stopping the run and clogging the middle for this vaunted defense that returned 10 starters from last season.

Page 13

“Come the fourth quarter we just looked at each other and said ‘This is Manalapan football, we got to pound it down their throats,’” Krause said. “We saw it in their faces at the end of the game, they have a lot of guys going both ways and were tired. We knew we had to go right at them and finish the job.” The Manalapan defense held the Eagles scoreless while holding them to minus-8 yards rushing and 64 yards of total offense in the second half. The Braves have not lost a game in Class A North since being realigned into the division in 2010 and the main obstacle for a fourth straight crown now appears to be undefeated Colts Neck. After tonight’s game they know there’s room for improvement if they are to capture the program’s elusive first NJSIAA title after losing in the finals in last two seasons. Follow me @getmready

Preventing injury is easier than dealing with the after effects.

A healthy, physically active child is what most parents would want their child to be, with the list of reasons why the child should participate in sports seemingly endless. However, with more children and young adults participating in varying levels of sports, comes the risk of injury. High school athletes alone account for approximately 2 million injuries with over 500,00 doctor visits and 30,000 hospitalizations per year. Of these injuries 65% occur during practice. Injury prevention and functional enhancements to the body are often put to the side taken over by the endless amount of practices and private lessons that athletes endure until an injury actually sidelines the athlete. These facts are known throughout the medical world and the injuries treated after the injury took place. IVYREHAB is a regional outpatient physical therapy company that has now taken the next step

in either preventing injuries or making injuries less debilitating to the athlete. We have recently created the IVYREHAB Injury Prevention and Enhancement program. This program takes any athlete from any sport and evaluates what limitations the athletes body has to appropriately remedy the functional issue that is present. The tools that IVYREHAB utilizes in order to determine these deficiencies are the Functional Movement Systems (FMS), Cincinatti Sportsmetrics, Titleist Performance Institute screen (TPI), overhead throwing athlete screening, and IMPACT testing. FMS is a series of sport and functional movements that are graded to score a number that correlates to a risk of injury. If that athlete scores be-

low a certain number, he/she is at a higher risk of injury and specific corrective exercises are given to reduce that risk. Sportsmetrics is designed for the female athlete but can be used for any young athlete that could be at risk for an ACL injury. It is a video analysis that directly shows what the risk of

Toms River North Boys Undefeated Since Opener By Kevin Davis

After dropping its Sept. 7 opener at Monroe, the Toms River North boys’ soccer team was able to navigate the remainder of its September schedule without any additional losses. At the end of the month, the Mariners found themselves with a 4-1-2 overall record, and a 4-0-2 mark in A South competition.

Colts Young Soccer Team Gaining Experience By Michael Rogers

Coming off of a 1-1 draw at Lacey on Sept. 27, TR North was hopeful it would be able to begin constructing a winning streak when they hosted cross-town rival Toms River East on Oct. 1. They appeared to be on their way in the closing seconds of the match thanks to a go-ahead goal from Tyler Foss with around 15 minutes left in regulation. However, East

The CBA soccer team has a history of being very successful in the Shore Conference as well as the state tournament. This year the Colts have an extremely young team (7 sophomore and 1 freshman, and only 7 seniors), but are still ranked 10th in the Shore Conference with a 5 win 3 losses and 1 tie this season. Head coach Dan Keane is pleased with his team’s effort this season and said, "This is the youngest team we have ever had and have lost a lot of 1 goal games. We are very strong defensively and have only given up 7 goals this season."

ACL injury is. With ACL injuries, females are given more plyometric, or explosive exercises are given to engage the hamstring muscles more. TPI is specific to golf but can be utilized on any rotational athlete such as baseball or tennis. TPI was created by Titleist to find either mobility restrictions in joints or muscles or stability problems such as muscle/ core weakness. Our overhead throwing athlete screen also highlights what mobility or stability problems are present and combines that with an analysis of the throwing motion. had one last chance as time ticked away. Looking for a final chance, East’s Anthony Batelli delivered a cross that North junior Nick Hund defended with his hand, setting up a penalty kick for East’s Lorenzo Scala. Scala scored on the kick, tying the game at 2 and forcing overtime. The game ended in a 2-2 tie. “My boy stuck his hand up, and got called for the hand ball,” Mariners coach Joe Mahon explained. “I didn’t argue, it was the right call. But I thought it was a great ruling – the referee didn’t throw him out. He said he’d played his heart out for 79 minutes, awarded East the penalty kick,

The Colts are led by leading scorer Russell Romani, who has 6 goals and 2 assists this season. He is helped by a very strong defense with goalie David Krall, posting three shutouts so far this season. The defense is made stronger with Jim Cavanaugh and Jackson Erwin and Garrett Patten anchoring the defense. Mid fielder Colin Mulligan is also a key to the Colts success as is Freshman Matt Throrsheim who coach Keane said is a very talented player. The Colts suffered some vey close defeats this past week with one-goal losses

to Manalapan and Freehold Township (ranked in the Shore Conference). All but one of CBA’s games this season have been one goal games. In the loss to Freehold Township, the Colts’ goal was scored by Mulligan with Kroll making 8 saves. With games coming up in the next few weeks against Howell, Middletown South, and Colts Neck, Coach Keane is looking for his team to keep competing and improve offensively and he said,"Our defense is very solid and if we can produce some more offense we can have some success in the Shore Conference Tournament."

line preseason so that if a concussion is thought to have occurred, retesting can help determine severity and will be a major determining factor whether play can be resumed. New protocols for concussion management are pointing to light to moderate exercise helping the athlete return to better cognitive and physical ability. Colts Neck’s Shutout Streak Continues By Jim Hintelmann

mIDDLE TOWN north vS colts neck Photo By: Francine Attardi MIDDLETOWN TOWNSHIP - Unbeaten Colts Neck (4-0) remained unscored upon this season with a 42-0 A Division North rout of Middletown North Friday night, but the Cougars came within a foot of having it end in the first quarter. North, on its first series, went 93 yards in just seven plays and had first down at the Colts Neck 2. A 30-yard run by sophomore Chad Freshnock and a 35-yard pass from freshman Don Glenn to Donald Glenn were the key plays for North. The Cougar defense, however, settled down and three North running plays gained just a yard, and a fumble on the fourth attmept was recovered by Colts Neck back to the 18. Given that lift, the rest of the game belonged to Colts Neck

with 6-2, 225 pound tailback Anthony Gargiulo ripping the Lion defense for three touchdowns on runs of 18, 12 and 26 yards while rushing for 190 yards in 16 carries.

Another Colts Neck interception, this one by Zachary Celmer with just a minute left in the half, set up the third Cougar touchdown, a 20-yard run by Gargiulo.

“He’s a big kid,” said North’s new coach Steve Bush, “but we just didn’t tackle well. We missed him on all three of those touchdowns. We also didn’t finish our offense on two occasions.”

“This should have been a closer first half instead of 210,” said Bush, “We didn’t get it done when we needed to.”

After stopping North on the first drive, Colts Neck went 82 yards in 11 plays with Gargiulo finishing it off with an 18-yard touchdown run. The Cougars scoed on their next two possesions with Michael Ververka setting up the first with an interception at midfield, the first of five by the Cougars. Gargiulo scored five plays later.

North threatened in the third quarter, reaching the Cougaqr 5, but a clipping penalty ended the drive and Colts shoved across three more touchdowns, two of them on runs of 39 and 56 yards by Abdul Quddus. North (0-3) has been strggling this season with a relatively inexperienced team. “We have a new program here and are trying to build on it,” said Bush.”We’re trying to get the team to understand the system, and learning it fast.”

HOLMDEL - Games between the Red Bank Catholic and St. John Vianney girls athletic teams are usually highly competitive affairs regardless of the sport, and Saturday’s 1-0 A Division Central girls soccer victory by RBC was typical. The score was a repeat of the earlier meeting between the two teams “St. John Vianny is a far better team then their record,” said RBC coach Frank Lawrence. “Both games were mirror images of each other. We are both playing in a brutal division with teams like Holmdel and Rumson.” The only score in the game came midway in the second half when RBC’s Caroline Price took a cross from the right side from Crace Correll and kicked it in to the upper left corner at about three yards away. “It was a set play,” said Price. “We worked it through their defense and I came up the middle. I got a good assist from Grace and scored.” RBC almost scored a few minutes later when Correll received a cross pass from Maeve Cowley but her shot from five yards away just went wide right. “St. John Vianney played hard and with intensity,” said Lawrence, “This is a big rivalry but we may have had a little more talent on top and have more experience. That was the differ-

ence in the game.” RBC is 8-2 with the lone losses coming to Rumson and Holmdel. “We’re in second place behind Holmdel,” said Lawrence, “but we play them again Thursday. I think that we are playing up to expectations, but we’ve had some glitches on the way. “This game proves that we are a highly skilled team and are mentally tough,” he added. SJV is having a rare off-season. but coach Tammy Reinert is optimistic. “Our conference is very strong,” said Reinert. “We play two games each with RBC, Holmdel and Rumson. We also play another very good team in Pennington. “We have a mixed team with nine seniors and three freshmen,” she noted, “but they are all playing very hard.”
