Concussion: What you need to know Part 1 Kristin M. Donald, ATC *RUGRQ ' 'RQDOG 0' The word concussion has become com monplace in our sports injury vernacular. Symptoms of a concus sion may not show up immediately and in fact may present hours or days later. Some times changes as simple as altered emo tional behavior or sleep disturbances may indicate these injuries but are not apparent or known to the supervising medical profes sionals. Oftentimes diagnosis relies on recognizing subtle cognitive or behavioral changes by the people who are closest and spend most time with the injured athlete. It is impera tive that parents, girlfriends and boyfriends, etc. are aware that symptoms often written off as “feeling blue, “acting out, or other teenage personality traits may actually be indicative of mTBI.
